-
Q1: What role(s) can you play when your students engage in small group discussions? For what purpose?
-
Hey and . is happening now. Join if you want.
-
A1: Go around to each of the groups listening to what students are saying then ask a question that involves deeper thinking
-
A1 Teacher needs to be listening, taking notes, asking clarifying adn probing questions https://t.co/gRrcZffxkP
-
-
Q1: What role(s) can you play when your students engage in small group discussions? For what purpose?
-
A1: Sometimes I stay completely quiet and observe the conversations. I don't want to sway the convo at all.
-
A1: Many possible, but I prefer order keeper. I want to add and lead as little as possible, but keep them on track.
-
A1: It's important for a teacher to carefully observe discussion time, ready to step in or answer questions
-
A1: Ts role is to listen and not interject own thoughts but ask Qs when convo stalls or grows weak
-
A1: Will ask follow up questions if needed, but I honestly stay as quiet as possible and just observe. Makes Ss talk more.
-
That is the best way to learn, yes? At least one of my favorite ways!
-
A1 facilitator, go around and listen to grps, help whn needed, use it to guide our next stps
-
I think we're on similar pages!
-
love that! Ts need to observe Ss more without talking to them...powerful assessment tool
-
Even more alignment around facilitation! Maybe establishing a theme?
-
A1 help Ss explore more deeply by asking questions; mostly stay out of the way!
-
Oh my, I am late! Sean Kendall from Port Orange Elementary!
-
A1: I found that prepping group discussion is where it counts. rubrics, manipulatives, role setting, priming, goals, etc
-
Always happy to have you and
-
I love it! Stay out of the way to help them move farther forward! True in my world!!
-
Q2 coming soon, and will likely build on some of our responses to Q1 so far.
-
Me too, Alex in LA, teaching tech K6, big on games, and S centered, lacking drivers license.
-
did you give a break this week?
-
david is driving from SF to LA!
-
He's been doing an amazing job and we wanted to give him a rest and switch it around!
-
Q2: What strategies can you use to check for understanding as they share their ideas?
-
why no driver's license? we have a friend who ubers everywhere in LA just to save money
-
A1: The instigator Responds to other Ss in a thought-provoking way. Observer- 0.0 the chat to share whole group valuable info
-
A1: Less invasive checks for understanding are better imo. If you can observe w/out interrupting conversation, don't butt in
-
A2. I've been having students write individually on post it notes and post them in the 'appropriate box' on the board.
-
A2: Having students discuss and then share with the larger group can be really effective
-
A2: have students keep a daily journal and collect these at the end of every week
-
a2 how about a small rubric so s can grade other s on answers https://t.co/WDzCvS7jFC
-
-
Q2: What strategies can you use to check for understanding as they share their ideas?
-
A2:(sorry) If you need to interrupt, allow Ss to ask each other check questions (distribute them on index cards or digitally)
-
Agreed to your A1...the question is always "if". Sometimes it's necessary, but hopefully you can use a soft touch.
-
A2'cont:Seek 'advice' for the one's that need adjustment.
-
-
Yeah, I'm forever uberring. But also, Idk how to drive. Learning this summer
-
Interesting! Do you determine the boxes, or do they? And is there set review time after?
-
A2 use & share w/other grps, class discussn, or if I hear somethng I address whole class
-
A2 cont: I've also had answer via goformative. If the peaks were close, chat with neighbors and repoll.
-
Did you read the future questions already? lol Definitely a key.
-
A2: Post it's, Tweets w/tags and hashtags abt concepts, roll the dice Qs, 2 minute paper
-
Start discussion w driving/focusing ?. listen 4 connections 2 Question. R students asking each other?s, building on ideas
-
-
ahh, i forgot you are a new yorker! sadly,
-
I'll determine general categories. Sometimes it is confidence of response. Very insightful!
-
Awesome! Do they self review or review as a class ever?
-
A2: You can make individual group digital formative assessments like , also individual boards too!
-
I'm a big fan of group analysis! Having constructive criticism through a rubric can work great.
-
I really like this idea! Automatic illustration of agreement or disagreement
-
Very cool; thank you for sharing!
-
may i ask what are roll the dice questions and 2 minute paper?
-
A2: check for understanding is about connecting their learning through outputs... writing and conversations
-
I should just copy and paste this...will it seem too biased? lol
-
they could have a journal reading circle at the end of each month and review important info
-
Great conversation between me and the students and them + themselves. Tip off for many directions!
-
A2- Collaborate with other groups, share final response on collaborative document, calculators and
-
when doing group work, how valid do you think that a group outcome that shows mastery of a concept is for each group member?
-
The observation and collection are always a big key. Do you prefer or avoid addressing the whole class?
-
A2continued: Using GC now, when a group turns in an assignment, the private message is feedback, hints, extensions, answers.
-
Michelle 3rd grade Florida..what's the best way to start if ur new to goformative?
-
Can't disagree with that! Whatever method used, fining the trends quickly while they're still working is huge!
-
-
Whatever way is better, case by case, if I hear something a lot, then class, if not, then grp
-
write for 2 min reflecting on Q Ss give their thoughts but key is for T to repond back to Ss learning
-
This chat is more about the teaching method than the tool, but please join us and throw out ideas!
-
Sorry all, have to run... it was great chatting!
-
socratic circle https://t.co/zRxG5M6dqD

-
This chat is more about the teaching method than the tool, but please join us and throw out ideas!
-
Agree,it's never going to be the exact same situation and response each time.
-
Jump right in. It really is very easy to use. Set up your classes and have Ss join.
-
-
-
There are pre-made formatives from other teachers you can use as examples
-
-
-
Wish you were near me. I would sit down and show you how quick really is.
-
Q3: What are ways you can motivate every student to participate in a small group discussion?
-
a3 make it a safe environment, s can't be scared to give wrong answer https://t.co/0v6r9wKOKR
-
-
Q3: What are ways you can motivate every student to participate in a small group discussion?
-
A3 let each student chose a role within the group, this makes them feel more in charge of their own learning
-
-
chatting in ever use goformative?
-
Totally agreed, and something we all strive for. Anything you think most bang-for-buck on environment?
-
A3. Give each student a set amt of time to talk and then time to collaborate and determine a grp answer.
-
-
Hey . Mike from State College, PA checking in late.
-
. Yes! Great to get them comfortable. If doing multiple times, do you see someone "settle" into a role?
-
how the t handles situations, use can u elaborate, how does it relate, refocus s
-
Hey Mike from State College! ;-)
-
A3 Give Ss tasks, switch it up, everyone has to be involved somehw, start small & build comfort
-
. It could potentially force a differing opinion to come out that wouldn't have as well! Great stuff!
-
. Fine, I guess we can let you in late! j/k, happy to have you!
-
-
Tasks/defined roles have been key to student comfort in my classes. They make fun of them, yet follow them.
-
A3: Individual roles within a discussion group can appeal to student strenghts and create a sense of ownership
-
Giving a faculty PD tomorrow after school on . Near and dear to my heart! :0)
-
Awesome details! I like "relation" questions to push deeper and open other pathways too.
-
having an outside peer evaluate how effectively they do the roles is also key.
-
I will when it is done! :0)
-
A3: using sentence starters helps those who are reluctant to talk and share
-
A3: To get ind. buy in stinks in my class for my Gen-Ed. Would love advice! I give ind. roles but it doesn't seem to do much.
-
. defined roles seem to be a common thread here tonight! Thanks for the addition!
-
Q4 (final question) about to come up! Get Ready!
-
I have a Drama-Free and Bully-Free posters hanging. It's all about that first day of school, IMO.
-
-
-
. great question. Sometimes the usual thing that works may not in your specific situation. Any advice Ts?
-
In my presentation, or in my classes? In my classes, yes! In my presentation, not this time!
-
. great question. Sometimes the usual thing that works may not in your specific situation. Any advice Ts?
-
. great question. Sometimes the usual thing that works may not in your specific situation. Any advice Ts?
-
A. I'm always really honest about things. Here is why, here is how, here is what. Any questions?
-
Q4 A: (2-part) If you return to a whole class discussion to "share-out", how can you avoid being the sage on the stage?
-
Using to present. Will share when I am done.
-
Using prezi, and will share. It showcases 8 FA tools, with most time spent on . Shh, don't tell.
-
Q4B: What are ways you can turn the responsibility of leading the discussion over to students so they connect peers' ideas?
-
A4 Keep it moving by continuously prodding and poking always with the never ending "WHY did you say that?"
-
a4 hate to beat this drum again but Socratic https://t.co/xleQuT9lNc
-
-
Q4B: What are ways you can turn the responsibility of leading the discussion over to students so they connect peers' ideas?
-
A4B group discussion, fish bowl teacher does not participate unless absolutely needed
-
. Don't feel bad if you're beating a good drum! Do you ever feel you need to tweak it though?
-
A4: let them create and submit the questions for the discussions.
-
A4: the Ss can be the ones who come up on stage to recap every day.
-
. We learned the "5 Why's" method in grad school. Ask 5 times in a row and you will find the underlying reason.
-
I love this idea! Thanks for the share!!!
-
A4. Whiteboarding; giving teams a time limit to present.
-
. Great way to get buy-in! Do you do this beforehand, or on the fly?
-
We've got a couple more minutes of ! Please let us know your thoughts on Checking for Understanding in Group Discussions!
-
Has anyone tried having the groups video their discussion? IDK if this would help or hurt.
-
Thank you for a great chat
-
. Interesting idea! I'd love to hear any stories if someone has.
-
A4: Blogging helps with sharing out as well. Gives the quiet ones a chance to be heard, without having to speak.
-
. It was great having you!
-
Different mediums for different styles could be very good! Do you have any issues reconciling data after?
-
ALWAYS! I had to step away to help a peer! Montessori is the true way to learn to manage STs!
-
I have thought about to record conversation, but it may use way too much data.
-
beforehand so they can develop "good" thought provoking questions. Submit through Google forms
-
What about S √list for the roles. But they √ off each other? Rotating roles? Each S has to do each role to √ the assignment?
-
-
Data on what? Group discussions aren't only to gather data? Blogging is good for no right or wrong answers.
-
. That's great! (although I may suggest another site for it ;)
