Here we go - Q1 is up for you! Tell us your thoughts! https://t.co/FAwtviTLqF
Q1: Why does it matter that students feel a sense of belonging in schools?
When Ss feel like they belong, they feel connected and WANT to learn. Connection, R-ships, they're key.
A1 It's there for them. If they don't feel ownership, then we're not truly S centered.
This is so important for Ts to remember!
So many people are sharing our classrooms may be the only place students feel welcomed.
A1: A sense of belonging is probably most important thing. It's why is so magical. It's our home! Our family!
A1. also makes it less awkward to have those tough conversations. Belonging = successful learning

https://t.co/reUEPx2697
Q1: Why does it matter that students feel a sense of belonging in schools?
A1: Students learn more when they feel a part of something...special.
How do we give them that sense of ownership?
This is so true! For too many Ss, school is their safe heave and where they go to be loved. Sad, but true
I really appreciate your adding that word "special" let's ensure ALL S feel like they belong in special places
A1 Same reason we all need that sense. I feel like we all desire feeling of relevance, purpose, etc.
Q2: What are the “consequences” when a student doesn’t feel like he/she belongs?
https://t.co/jtNtdA5LaT

A1 S's learn and grow and encourage others when they feel like they're part of something.
A2: at "best"...withdraw or misbehavior...at worst, the things that no school or parents want to consider...
Relationships are so important! It's amazing how hard Ss will work for the tchrs that cares for them
love?!? I mean it's so simple & sounds cliche but I just want pour love into everyone. They feel it!
Deep thoughts here. Have you ever considered the consequences? https://t.co/XWvh0tUekt

Q1: Can't bridge the achievement gap w/o first bridging the empathy gap. Climate and community matter in our schools.
A2: Feeling like an outsider makes them act like one: defiant, disrespectful, apathetic, no achievement. You lose em!
homework? WE HAVE HOMEWORK?!?!?!
Just kidding ;)
A2 And how many different ways are there to "belong?"
A2. Ss shut down, become unengaged, disrupt learning. Sometimes Ss are trying to make us prove it to them. Do we mean it.
Honestly, I love this concept. Like, it just hit me hard. I'm bringing this w/ me 2 my classroom this year! https://t.co/Ad9Axftbr2
We have started forgetting bell to bell teaching & thinking about bell to bell caring thx to https://t.co/3e6AshdnNa
The empathy gap! Wow...human first, everything else after. https://t.co/Wu1y8YMVOj
Q1: Can't bridge the achievement gap w/o first bridging the empathy gap. Climate and community matter in our schools.
A2 When S's don't feel they belong they see no purpose or benefit in being there. Not exactly fertile ground for learning.
A2 student: "Why am I here? Who cares? What are you going to do about it? Whatever..."
Sometimes negative attention is better than no attention at all to some Ss.
Oh my gosh yes. It's so hard. https://t.co/Bv39vt1u6o
A2: Feeling like an outsider makes them act like one: defiant, disrespectful, apathetic, no achievement. You lose em!
YES! I was SO taken a back when that was one of the first things our new supt, said.. https://t.co/P5RbRepdBb

Q1: Can't bridge the achievement gap w/o first bridging the empathy gap. Climate and community matter in our schools.
A2: I have Ss in the past express school is the only place they feel free to be a kid.
A2: if you don't create an environment where Ss believe they're important and they can excel, they'll keep hiding
"Belonging" is a word I hear a lot from students who describe the feeling they want from their teachers and classmates.
Friends. I love this chat tonight. I work mostly w/teachers and WOW so many correlations between Ts & Ss w/this topic
A2: You could lose them. Lost students, unfulfilled potential. Don't ever give up.
A2- like any social situation...they check out. They leave. They don't come back. Consequences are huge!!
The is focusing on student reported school climate measures as a way to better understand achievement gaps.
A2: I see it in the body language more than I hear it. There's a spirit of dejectedness that prevails daily. It's pretty intense
Q3: What core elements help a student feel as if he/she does belong?
A2:Trauma and stress can take years off of a life.No sense of belonging manifests trauma/stress that already exists in their life.
A2: Unfortunately what we experience too often in our schools: Ss misbehave, stop working, or give up and stop caring
100% agree, the student gives out why bother attitude https://t.co/niVXfPx9Dc
A2 When S's don't feel they belong they see no purpose or benefit in being there. Not exactly fertile ground for learning.
just said it "when they feel like they DONT belong they become apathetic, disruptive, etc"
Can't wait to see this work invade Lafayette. https://t.co/y7cknG2Btp
The is focusing on student reported school climate measures as a way to better understand achievement gaps.
What she said. https://t.co/iKXLodsSxT
A1: A sense of belonging is probably most important thing. It's why is so magical. It's our home! Our family!
A2: It's cool to see Ss come in your class and watch them get more comfortable. Like they're safe and it's gonna be ok
yes. Can Ts create a sense of belonging for Ss if they don't have a sense of belonging they-selves?
exactly why creating a culture of "belonging" is so so so crucial to effective training in general
When done the right way! It most definitely becomes a family! For students and teachers!
I see it too. And hear it. It hurts me.
A3: While knowing names and being nice are good, it is a deeper sense of truly knowing each S, their disposition and motivation.
A3 Put the student before the grade. Listen, make eye contact.
So often, Ss have adult responsibilities outside of school. Some Ss are mini parents to their siblings. https://t.co/18sQx9BEFM
A2: I have Ss in the past express school is the only place they feel free to be a kid.
Yes! Help our Ts feel the same way in training. It extends to classroom
The issue starts with us. Teachers complain about apathetic kids, but students never start that way.
true story, bro. Good leadership starts @ the top! said this just yesterday! Admins are so IMPORTANT
What should we put in place? How do we build that feeling? https://t.co/J2rK9jPplz
Q3: What core elements help a student feel as if he/she does belong?
Yes, I keep my Ss w/special needs for 7 years. By graduation they ARE part of the family!
A3. If Ts are not sincere or genuine, nothing else really matters.
These 2 scary things that happen far too often in our schools. It is hard to overcome t his https://t.co/cihEYfYkhd
A2 students disconnect and disengage from making learning meaningful and fun.
How might the "belonging" shift if students could pursue more Qs they care about, not just teacher Qs? https://t.co/oYMSb1eQeg
So right! Belonging goes beyond a smile and recognition
A3: You know my name. You know my interests. You believe I can grow and learn, even if every single person until now does not.
Absolutely, the community includes ALL stake holders!!! https://t.co/qLQRnmwuO8
Friends. I love this chat tonight. I work mostly w/teachers and WOW so many correlations between Ts & Ss w/this topic
A3:Ss feeling like the Ts/Ps truly hear their voice & listen to them. Along with belonging Ss must be valued as part of community.
I cannot stress this enough! Kids have a detector for "fakeness" like nobody's business! https://t.co/zcqMsYwo6c
A3. If Ts are not sincere or genuine, nothing else really matters.
A3 weekly family meetings; celebrating our achievements; common class goals (created by Ss); teams; individual responsibilities
A3: Caring teachers. Room to breathe. Ownership of the process.
Those are just being nice, but not creating belonging...we MUST do more.
Oh bless. These are my PEOPLE y'all. Could not have said it better. https://t.co/ZfhnqhhneI
A3. If Ts are not sincere or genuine, nothing else really matters.
YES!This is so big in middle school when so much of their personality & mindset is established https://t.co/1I9KmH0Zzj
The issue starts with us. Teachers complain about apathetic kids, but students never start that way.
Ts and admin definitely cultivate the culture of schools. A little negativity can do a lot of damage.
The goal of school climate work should be to figure out how to support students to move from passive consumers to active partners.
Love this idea! So simple yet profound! https://t.co/OggI9djzl0
A3 Beimg recognized, acknowledged, words of affirmation, nods, looks, smirks
A3 students taking ownership of their learning through , flipped classrooms,
A3: Build a loving and trusting relationship. Tell them you miss them when they are gone. Brag on them. Ask for their expertise...
A3. Talked to a S today, when I said that I believed in their ability, they glowed. Individual attention is important.
you know! I'm tagging & Dr. Curry here. Bc this is what he does best!!! Truly investing in the students.
yeah... my kids don't get the option of being apathetic. Or thinking they don't matter. Or thinking they can't achieve
I am fighting this battle at my school with some Ss. Having a hard time dealing with it
Love that you included families! Home/school partnerships are so important
And I would say active partners with one another, w teacher as passive guide...let the Ss shine.
And students can totally see through the fakery. They know which teachers care. It starts with us.
A3: Authenticity is the name of the game. Yeah they're kids but don't they deserve the same respect we want as adults?
I like this! You give them no choice but to be great and that's just what they will be! https://t.co/Kj7LA51rMB
yeah... my kids don't get the option of being apathetic. Or thinking they don't matter. Or thinking they can't achieve
Active partners - Yes! Great comment!
Ask for their expertise. We all love to be noticed for our intelligence & talents. https://t.co/A7V19lf0Fd
A3: Build a loving and trusting relationship. Tell them you miss them when they are gone. Brag on them. Ask for their expertise...
Even the slightest scent of negativity shows kids that its okay to check out.
A3: Being genuine and sincere. Not something a T can fake. The Ts must first WANT the Ss to belong.
A3: Transparency is a huge factor, too. Modeling is not only for the mini-lesson or the runway. Show Ss what coping looks like.
1 of my Ss from last year has 4 binders with words that I hammered last year: Achieve, Believe, Dream, & Succeed
I think Belonging has to b model'd by the Ts amongst the Ts. Ss need to SEE a value in belong'n to more than friends n "cliques"
Tchrs are just big students in my opinion. Most of the things that pertain to Ss, apply to tchrs too
This is a great point; they struggle daily in our classes & w life; they need to see OUR struggle, too.
A3: LOVE!! If you start with that, the rest is easy!
Vivis Sunday School teacher sent her a card every time she missed. It was so powerful to Viv but also to ME as a P!
Q4: What can we do as Ts/As to reach out to Ss who might not feel as if they belong in the school/class?
YES! They're just kids, but kids are people and deserving of respect and sincerity https://t.co/jpuh6hXYo4
A3: Authenticity is the name of the game. Yeah they're kids but don't they deserve the same respect we want as adults?
Agreed. And with that comes bad-mouthing other Ts or admin in front of the Ss. No bueno. https://t.co/BmXmTxVaak
Even the slightest scent of negativity shows kids that its okay to check out.
for SURE! I have thoroughly enjoyed having Ts as my Ss for awhile. It's really helped me see a fresh perspective
Tough for progressive Ts to get any traction when they have to drag their principals behind them.
Amen! Student voice! It's time we really start listening to what our Ss have to say https://t.co/B1OZ9TR3y7
A3:Ss feeling like the Ts/Ps truly hear their voice & listen to them. Along with belonging Ss must be valued as part of community.
Most hurtful thing ever. Must end it.
easier when they let you run wild, right ?
This is especially true for middle school students!! https://t.co/kHgDT3VahL
I cannot stress this enough! Kids have a detector for "fakeness" like nobody's business! https://t.co/zcqMsYwo6c
A3. If Ts are not sincere or genuine, nothing else really matters.
A4: Pull them into deep conversations about purpose and place. Help everyone find their spot.
except me- lol! Bc it's the little tiny things that mean the MOST to me PERSONALLY! goes back to love languages 😝
SO TRUE! Imagine that! Ts must model first! Such an important component. Comes back to school culture https://t.co/MilPpInRZr
I think Belonging has to b model'd by the Ts amongst the Ts. Ss need to SEE a value in belong'n to more than friends n "cliques"
A4: have a specific ask- something that can only be achieved with that child. They are absolutely essential for the school to run.
Keeping it 100 is what our Ss desire. No time 4 fakeness.Ss pick up on more than we give them credit for. https://t.co/kKjMnLzpes
This is a great point; they struggle daily in our classes & w life; they need to see OUR struggle, too.
A4: Be intentional & reach out to those Ss daily. Connect with home of those Ss & create a sense of belonging w/whole family.
A4: as says, assume and trust that ALL Ss WANT TO BE SUCCESSFULL! It's a great starting place.
Wow! You definitely made an impact! That's what it's all about! https://t.co/lLTGxaFDva
1 of my Ss from last year has 4 binders with words that I hammered last year: Achieve, Believe, Dream, & Succeed
A4 Ask lots of questions and have them ask lots of questions. Can uncover so much and find common areas for connection.
What are some ways to help kids find their spot?
Ts reach'n out and creat'n spaces where Ss create their own sense of belong'n. Ss kno what they want we need to give it to em
A3: Let Ss be partners in their own learning. Solicit frequent feedback and co-design the learning experience.
A4: Make it a point to talk w/ them. Show interest in them as individuals. Make them feel important
A4: Try to cnct personally. Leave school out of it for a min. and try to get to know the kid, period. Ask ?s, Be engaged
A4 connect to their passions. Let them be in charge and solve the problem from the ground up!
A4: Sometimes lack of belonging is due 2 parents lack of confidence in school. Trust must be built w/family along with/Ss.
Do you have any resources teachers can use to help in the co-design process???? https://t.co/rU2POV9jIK
A3: Let Ss be partners in their own learning. Solicit frequent feedback and co-design the learning experience.
A4 Find something they do well and let them roll with it.
YES! How do you connect with parents exactly? In person? Home visits? Calls? So important!
So powerful! "Assume all students want to be successful!" A must for any classroom! https://t.co/C6nD0RgTpX
A4: as says, assume and trust that ALL Ss WANT TO BE SUCCESSFULL! It's a great starting place.
A4 I subtly give them uncomfortable amounts of positive attention until other kids do too (not always, but works often)
A4. Give them a safe space to share their likes, dislikes. Find a common interest. Have convesations that aren't forced.
A4: I've found field trips and vibing w/ students after their game or in the hall to be a great way of achieving this worthy goal.
Amen, sister!! https://t.co/bFTLDsQ8UO
Tough for progressive Ts to get any traction when they have to drag their principals behind them.
Sometimes kids need to know we are people too - We are concerned with more than just school issues.
It's true...like really, do Ss really show up saying "damn, I hope I fail today"... https://t.co/X4r5Gh3Lnl
So powerful! "Assume all students want to be successful!" A must for any classroom! https://t.co/C6nD0RgTpX
A4: as says, assume and trust that ALL Ss WANT TO BE SUCCESSFULL! It's a great starting place.
Right! Our Ps are just as important The school-home connection is integral https://t.co/1jOufWLfTr
A4: Sometimes lack of belonging is due 2 parents lack of confidence in school. Trust must be built w/family along with/Ss.
Or sometimes you just give up and become a principal;)
Speaking of S voice...my child is asking me to read . Night all!
Ask a student what time game is tonight and you'll see a smile, u never saw before. Simple. Big deal.
Love this!! https://t.co/oQltVsBCiv
A4: as says, assume and trust that ALL Ss WANT TO BE SUCCESSFULL! It's a great starting place.
Yes! Share about our own lives so we seem easy to relate to, and then find ways to relate to them
Exactly! I use to hate my Ts that only talked or cared about "their" subject! Get a life! Get to know mine! https://t.co/MQs3SmdDSs
A4: Try to cnct personally. Leave school out of it for a min. and try to get to know the kid, period. Ask ?s, Be engaged
Yes, Ss open up during extracurriculars in ways they never would in a class. Great way to build relationships
Have genuine talks w/ kids. See what they like, utilize resources & knowledge of the community to plug them in.
Yes! We have to get our parents involved! That is vital for student achievement https://t.co/YEGE2vvOo2
A4: Sometimes lack of belonging is due 2 parents lack of confidence in school. Trust must be built w/family along with/Ss.
F'real!!! Don't let the playoffs be on and you mention Curry's 3-pointer at the buzzer!! Got 'em! https://t.co/NIgwqwQgAl
Ask a student what time game is tonight and you'll see a smile, u never saw before. Simple. Big deal.
Q5: With whom can schools partner (communities/orgs) to create a greater sense of belonging for students?
Love this. Ninja esteem boosting with a side of positive peer pressure. https://t.co/4zBgbHAP7x
A4 I subtly give them uncomfortable amounts of positive attention until other kids do too (not always, but works often)
Ts gotta let Ss know who they are. We Ts need to humanize ourselves to our students and then they'll let us in
call each parent quarterly asking them about their Ss experience -ask 4 strengths & suggestions for school growth
There is still time to join ! Great convo on student belonging!
A5: in my community, we have found the to be a great partner to help all Ss feel as if they belong.
I might have known that... https://t.co/HLU7bg9h35
In fact we do! Read 's report complete w Ss led research and recs!
There's that word "genuine" again...I sense a theme!
A5 other schools and school districts.
A5: The most important partners...parents. When tchrs, students & parents work together...watch out
Yes, new accountability system is going to help us make that a reality in KY.
It may not be the parents exactly, but we need at least one adult at home w/ which the school can bond. https://t.co/6u8TneyYsq
YES! How do you connect with parents exactly? In person? Home visits? Calls? So important!
A4 One of our T's attended 1 after school activity of every S in the course of the year.
I randomly call or use Remind to send a quick positive message. SO powerful!

Ts gotta let Ss know who they are. We Ts need to humanize ourselves to our students and then they'll let us in
Yes, it's time to stop competing against each other and learn from other districts' successes!

Q5: With whom can schools partner (communities/orgs) to create a greater sense of belonging for students?
A5 When Ss engage in authentic work where they create & contribute instead of consume it opens so many comm. connections & purpose
A5: local arts organizations, churches, & small businesses might be able to help sponsor activities/clubs

A5 Individuals, in the community with skills and experiences to share. Partner with other schools, connect HS S's with MS S's.
Takes extra time/effort to connect with Ps and Community in positive ways. Time well worth it, even if positive is not returned.
I taught in one school that required 2 h. Visits a yr. can't say it helped. Calls, notes& Ss worked best. https://t.co/EPWHnSbhzU
YES! How do you connect with parents exactly? In person? Home visits? Calls? So important!

A6: There's a culture shift in your room, your school, and your community
A2 you've lost them. You have to reteach them that you care for them. They don't learn if they don't belong. Long term impacts :(
Crank the thermostat to GENUINE CARE
I agree - Students need to fee safe to try new things and take risks https://t.co/3cnYs8fc5u

A6 feeling of belonging gets you their best effort & if you can get that from most/all Ss, good things follow.
Less teacher stress! If only more Ts realized this and would jump on the bandwagon...
We must set the tone everyday. I tell my Ts, teach like its summer camp. Have fun, explore, engage, & build community.

A6: "Belong" is a powerful phrase. BE LONG: T must create a climate of Ss bonding together for the long term for true learning.
kids sometimes call me "Coach Paul" and then apologize. I always tell them I'm cool with it ;)
