Tuesday September 20, 2016 7:00 PM EDT
I am Angela, your moderator this evening for . I love booktalking to my high school students The Cellar by Natasha Preston!
My name is Jessica, HS Librarian, my favorite depends on what I just read :)
Brandi Young here. Your Central Director. Current ILibrarian, former MS & ES LMS and HS ELA teacher.
I'm like , it always depends on what I just read. I love connecting kids with their "just right" book.
FYI, I only have a few minutes. Have a kiddo with an upset stomach. :(
Fun video to get the chat started tonight: Have you ever done this type of booktalking before?

My favorite part of being a librarian! https://t.co/KeUagV5YQg
I'm like , it always depends on what I just read. I love connecting kids with their "just right" book.
I do this all the time! To random ppl I meet, my friends' kids, other teachers and librarians.
I have even been known to booktalk in airports! . I always preface with--"So, I am a school librarian."
Eh, I usually don't preface it with anything other than, "you should read this book." I eventually say I'm a LMS.
Let's go ahead with our Q1. Don't forget to reply with A1, A2, etc for each question. And use the .
Booktalking is such a general term-there are so many unique ways we promote and share new titles in our libraries.
Q1:Share your “out of the box” booktalking experience w/us. How do you help motivate your readers to check out new (& old) titles?
A1: It's not so new any more, but our Ts and Ss love "speed dating" with books!
A1: I like recording mine using students' book reviews. Upload into youtube & post on website. Great for summer reading titles!
A1: I'm thinking about short book reviews this year. Do any of you do this?
I've done speed dating, book tasting and book trailers.
A1 I've also seen librarians use social media, i.e. Instagram, Twitter, to post pics when new books arrive. Hoping to try!
is launching a new product, Book Nook, which hosts Ss book trailers & contains resources for Ss/Ts to make trailers.
excited for this to launch!
Can't wait to see this! https://t.co/Q9gDDpGPUb

- like the idea of short talks on YouTube. Do you have your own channel for Ss to access?
Book Nook really needs some updated trailers, so please encourage your Ss to submit theirs: https://t.co/JsdtzPgvWb
thanks! I think our parents really liked this too-as a starting point for picking out books!
Sorry, totally broke protocol and forgot my A1. :( lol
Promoting our services, books, and resources should be a continual routine.
Q2: What are some other ways you promote new books/resources in the library?
A1: I always gave a short snippet/teaser of each book when I was an ELA teacher and doing lit circles Parents seemed to like that
A2 A couple of times, esp at holidays, I'd gift wrap new books and challenge Ss to check out sight unseen!
A2: By creating fun displays and then using Augmented Reality (AR) to have the book be a target and then show a trailer.
A2: Bulletin boards/displays promoting your new books are always a hit--check out for ideas!
A2: During Banned Book Week, I wrapped the books in paper bags and wrote why they were banned on the front.
A2: I also always had a author/illustrator of the month and did a feature of info about them & their books
Yes, I used to love March Madness and other interactive bulletin boards, esp when I was in K-8 Library https://t.co/XLGjvOzTjz
A2: Bulletin boards/displays promoting your new books are always a hit--check out for ideas!
A2: Just started an to promote new books, displays, etc. Love the idea!
A2: I shredded a book that I was going to weed due to condition-and Ss had to guess title by the shredded paper! Monthly contest!
This always contained their contact info (social media) for kids to ask questions.
-- Anyone use to link onto your library virtual site?
A2: We did a Battle of the Books bracket (like March Madness brackets) and I made a HUGE bracket outside the library.
I linked my own account to my library site. Kids really enjoyed seeing what I was reading and getting reviews
did this to link to our ebook version in elem.
-you can add links to student booktalks via your online catalog--in Workflows! Great project for Practicum Students!
Q3 is coming up soon! Great ideas everyone!
You're welcome! They've recently started to work with to help w/ Buckeye Book Awards
Book Nook has a 856 tag for each book trailer so you can add any trailer you want to your catalog!
Q3: How do you use book trailers or other online resources as part of your in-person booktalks?
A3: As already mentioned, I combine book trailers and AR to blend physical and digital environments together.
A3: My Ss really enjoyed creating their own book trailers after their read. Convince your ELA Ts that this can be an assessment.
A3: I use booktrailers as an intro to my booktalks. Or sometimes the booktrailer is all that is needed to get them interested!
Welcome! I just LOVE that quote.
A3: I would show trailers on my TV screen or a computer screen in the library (ones without sound).
And during open house, schedule pick up, parent nights, etc.
I love that Book Nook can make your Ss famous! :)
Booktalking to teachers is also important! Staff meetings-screencasts-lunch time in the lounge?
If you have a book club with your Ss you can have them submit some to Book Nook!
LOVED book talking to Ts. We had a couple book clubs a year. One ongoing with Ss, another with Ts. Always started w/ book talks
A3: used booktrailers, during fixed schedule class, as a center. Trailers on iPad home screen with a stack of books at table.
Great use with centers!! Why didn't I think of that? :) https://t.co/NJF57aj2Sd

A3: I've also used storyboard apps when book talking, esp with ES Ss. It helps them visualize.
I'm interested in reading these responses. I don't want to be redundant at the conference.
Just got home--catching up on
A4: Ss created trailers in PPT and then uploaded to Movie Maker and added in music, etc.
I am LOVING THIS tool already! We need an just on Book Nook!
me too and it really generates interest!
A4: Animoto, Garageband, Prezi, PowerPoint, Keynote, Photo Show, WeVideo, Stupeflix, Movie Maker.
I would be happy to give a just on Book Nook. :)
A4: Don't forget to have your own channel to post your trailers on
How about having a featured title each day or week on your morning announcements? Just a short teaser about it!
As we wrap up this , let's all share one goal for this school year to better promote new titles in our libraries...
Not quite A4 but a suggestion for creating trailers: caption your videos for accessibility
If you put them on , you can add in CC.
Which is super easy if you wrote a script ahead of time.
My goal: to have my Ss have a more active role in our library's booktalks.
And then have them submit their talks and trailers to Book Nook. https://t.co/HN9Qd9U3mI

We're looking forward to hearing what's been most successful 4 u, particularly with stakeholders outside of building

Would love to help you if you need it! https://t.co/eajxxwZqah

Would librarians be interested if someone like me created a YouTube channel with booktalks, teasers & trailers of popular titles?
My goal is to promo my new books on a more regular basis, hope to try some trailers and social media techniques
Love the idea! Go for it girl! :)
Okay as we wrap up tonight--thanks to everyone for joining and sharing your ideas!
