  • MrsBayerLSMS Sep 24 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A2: BYOT plus 10 chromebooks per classroom. So for my 6th graders that means that during first semester, a handful have phones. Once January rolls around, maybe 1/2 have phones and a few have tablets. #TECHtalkGA

#TECHTalkGA A2: Jackson County Schools is heading toward 1:1! We will be there in two years or less. Our issue is keeping up with our exponential growth! We already have one school that is fully 1:1 -- West Jackson Middle School #OneJacksonGA
  • MsWillipedia Sep 24 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Lol, smart! That said, studies show that they'll retain the info better if they write or sketch note, but there's a benefit to an image, especially if a speaker is going too fast. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @Media_Barber
  • ClintWinter Sep 24 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A3: From a district perspective we try to have tools and policies in place to make our devices the most effective. We offer our teachers the option to use @goguardian teacher and our admins use the admin option to help keep our students safe. #techtalkga

We are thinking about going to interactive displays and removing projectors #TECHtalkGA
  • MsWillipedia Sep 24 @ 9:15 PM EDT

  • meghannmf Sep 24 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A3: Here is a sample @FCSchoolsGA BYOT policy: https://t.co/7qTcm2Wvug but schools have a ton of ownership. Here are school info pages: https://t.co/a9BX28sU0n #techtalkga
  • CharlesBeusse Sep 24 @ 9:15 PM EDT
Giving teachers the autonomy to use tech at their personal discretion is important in achieving early buy in. #TECHtalkGA
    • DarienCarruth Sep 24 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Device usage is left up to the teacher in each classroom. Usage is encouraged as a learning aid in every grade level. #TECHtalkGA
  • Media_Barber Sep 24 @ 9:15 PM EDT
I teach research and usually put up some of the passwords on the board they need. A picture is worth a 1,000 lost pieces of paper. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MsWillipedia
  • RhondaStroud9 Sep 24 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A3: plus we have Ss sign a user agreement contract during registration and we have conduct policies in the county issued handbooks #TECHtalkGA #gwinchat
  • CharlesBeusse Sep 24 @ 9:16 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA Q4: What are some challenges with electronic device management within your classroom?
  • iambrucestewart Sep 24 @ 9:16 PM EDT
Elbert County should be 1:1 in grades 6-12 by this spring #TECHtalkGA

  • Media_Barber Sep 24 @ 9:17 PM EDT
Is that true? If you give no real instructions or directions, how high is the buy-in? I would have guessed that having some clear expectations would help teachers. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @CharlesBeusse
  • bethanybeaudrie Sep 24 @ 9:17 PM EDT
Q4: For me it is troubleshooting Ss devices I'm not familiar with when they need help. #TECHtalkGA
  • mycalfdoll Sep 24 @ 9:17 PM EDT
Biggest challenges are effective instructional use and following procedures on device care. Operational care intersects instructional here. #TECHtalkGA
  • DanielCHarbert Sep 24 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Q4 keeping students off of sites that distract from@learning...mostly concerning games that don’t have to do with learning. #TECHtalkGA
  • Angela_LaPlante Sep 24 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Q3 Personal devices are supposed to connect to district WiFi and be used for EDU purposes when given the go ahead by Ts. Some schools ban the use, some schools support the use of personal devices, especially if tech resources are not readily available. #TECHtalkGA
  • amandat_hola Sep 24 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A5: I try to do collaborative work or games to avoid temptation to listen to music on YouTube or flitting around sites. #TECHtalkGA
  • ClintWinter Sep 24 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A4: Culture shift to being digital, Staying charged (our HS S take them home) #TECHtalkGA
  • Media_Barber Sep 24 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A4. The obvious problem is having the device distracting or even ignoring completely the teacher. Need to teach teachers how to handle classrm mgmt with them. #TECHtalkGA
  • meghannmf Sep 24 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Q4: Often we focus more on regulating use than empowering students. It can be difficult to give up perceived control #techtalkga
  • DarienCarruth Sep 24 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A4- One challenge is helping teachers keep up with the rapid pace of change within instr. tech... by the time they get a grasp of something, it changes. #TECHtalkGA
  • ErinPMiley Sep 24 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A4: keeping kids on WiFi, trouble shooting unlike devices, monitoring usage effectively... #TECHtalkGA
  • ClintWinter Sep 24 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A4 Con't: One of the things I try to preach, especially with chromebooks, is the fact that it takes so little time to close and open up and start. Tech should be used intentionally and not up for the whole time if not needed. #techtalkga
  • MrsBayerLSMS Sep 24 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A4: no matter how visible/engaged/mobile I was, I had students last year who pulled up a YouTube video of someone playing Fortnite, typed inappropriate things in Google Docs, etc. Havent noticed anything like that this year and hope it stays that way. #TECHtalkGA
  • CharlesBeusse Sep 24 @ 9:22 PM EDT
Yes! Always strive to keep students engaged when using technology. #TECHtalkGA
    • amandat_hola Sep 24 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A5: I try to do collaborative work or games to avoid temptation to listen to music on YouTube or flitting around sites. #TECHtalkGA
  • Media_Barber Sep 24 @ 9:23 PM EDT
I think my question is: How much training are your teachers getting BEFORE devices arrive? DO they know how to handle the devices? Are there school / district policies? #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @joannavrteaches, @CharlesBeusse, @TripleEFrame
  • DanielCHarbert Sep 24 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A4B Vision software has been a huge help with this! When students know you can see their screen, pause it or hijack it to demonstrate is a gamechanger #TECHtalkGA
  • CharlesBeusse Sep 24 @ 9:24 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA Q5: What are some strategies to ensure appropriate use of electronic devices?
  • RhondaStroud9 Sep 24 @ 9:24 PM EDT
    A4: Classroom management. #TECHtalkGA #gwinchat
  • bethanybeaudrie Sep 24 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Q5: Reminders that we're using it as a tool and not as a toy and awareness of managing the purpose behind the use. #TECHtalkGA
  • MrsBayerLSMS Sep 24 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A5: designing activities that are collaborative and engaging and that encourage creativity/critical thinking. When students are engaged, they’ll be motivated and on task. #TECHtalkGA
  • Angela_LaPlante Sep 24 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A4 I asked the teachers I coached today about their biggest challenges with tech... logins, broken hardware, and TIME #TECHtalkGA
  • edtechteach3 Sep 24 @ 9:26 PM EDT
Here’s what I’ve learned: in my experience, Pre-training on technology is not very effective. It only matters when it matters. I pre trained on LMS, devices and projectors. When I delivered 2nd round, there was little recollection of the 1st round. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @Media_Barber, @joannavrteaches, @CharlesBeusse, @TripleEFrame
  • bethanybeaudrie Sep 24 @ 9:26 PM EDT
Have they figured out how to hack it yet? I had Ss learn how to hack the monitoring software we had. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @DanielCHarbert
  • mycalfdoll Sep 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A5: teacher training, both best practices for device management and classroom management strategies. One strategy I’ve enjoyed is when a student device has an issue, i train the student, if possible, and have them teach the teacher. #TECHtalkGA
  • bethanybeaudrie Sep 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT
    Always, always TIME! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @Angela_LaPlante
  • Media_Barber Sep 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A5. I think it would help my teachers to have a policy where its clear each day to students in each class when to get on device, when to wait, when to keep it closed. #TECHtalkGA
  • ClintWinter Sep 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A5: This sounds over simplified, but I really believe that you have to think of the 1:1 device as a textbook in the fact that it is a device for teaching and learning. Do we play fortnight or dowlnoad seasons of family guy with our textbook? #techtalkga
  • amandat_hola Sep 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A5: If doing work in pairs I permit 1 https://t.co/XuAavHSVcB & have them take turns, chunk activities w/ timers, when possible I go into a lab where I can monitor them. #model your expectations! #TECHtalkGA
  • RhondaStroud9 Sep 24 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A5: Effective use of technology for instructional purposes. I have a 10 student tech team designed to conduct product reviews on Web 2.0 Tools and the necessary devices for classroom implementation. #TECHtalkGA #gwinchat
  • DeborahHuggard Sep 24 @ 9:28 PM EDT
Hi everyone! Sorry I missed this. Dawson Co HS media and tech, 1:1 iPads, lots of training, challenges but also incredible benefits. Successful change takes time. But we're all learning and have to remember to focus on all the good stuff happening! #TECHtalkGA
  • meghannmf Sep 24 @ 9:28 PM EDT
I completely agree. With quality instructional design, academic engagement is a given. #techtalkga
    In reply to @MrsBayerLSMS
  • GaETConf Sep 24 @ 9:29 PM EDT
One minute until #TECHTalkGA is over! Did you enjoy the excellent chat? We will continue partnering with #TECHtalkGA leading up to #GaETC18! Are you ready for the official #FlatGA?
  • Angela_LaPlante Sep 24 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A5 Provide clear expectations and high interest learning experiences. If Ss care about what they are learning, many of the other issues surface rarely if at all. #TECHtalkGA
  • Media_Barber Sep 24 @ 9:29 PM EDT
You are not wrong. I'm looking for the happy medium between pre-training & sudden class full of devices. It may not exist... Maybe spend the "pre" time working on policies & post time working on actual device. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @edtechteach3, @joannavrteaches, @CharlesBeusse, @TripleEFrame
  • MsWillipedia Sep 24 @ 9:29 PM EDT
    What @ClintWinter said. #TECHtalkGA
    • ClintWinter Sep 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT

  • ClintWinter Sep 24 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A5 Con't: I think that from a district standpoint you do what you can to head that off before it starts. Building trust with your students and Ts at the beginning of the year or when you go 1:1 and let them know what's up! #techtalkga
  • iambrucestewart Sep 24 @ 9:30 PM EDT
More chromebooks in a well managed domain are tools for success #TECHtalkGA
