We will begin #TECHtalkGA in just 2 minutes! Don't forget to include #TECHtalkGA in all your tweets. We will use the Q1/A1 format during tonight's chat.
A1: Hello everyone! I'm Nadia Williams, Digital Learning Coordinator for @CobbSchools and I feel devices are a tool. What matters most, IMO, is teacher training, creativity, and autonomy with harnessing the power of devices as learning tools.
#TECHtalkGA
Q2: We have all kinds of situations going on. Our school is 2nd/3rd grade. Third graders are 1:1. We are preparing Chromebook Carts for 2nd grade classes to check out and use as needed. #TECHtalkGA
A2: I guess we are a hybrid with different areas getting chromebooks through grants or dept funds. I strongly encourage Ss using their handheld computers that look like cell phones be used in class too. #TECHtalkGA#gwinchat
A2: BYOT plus 10 chromebooks per classroom. So for my 6th graders that means that during first semester, a handful have phones. Once January rolls around, maybe 1/2 have phones and a few have tablets. #TECHtalkGA
#TECHTalkGA A2: Jackson County Schools is heading toward 1:1! We will be there in two years or less. Our issue is keeping up with our exponential growth! We already have one school that is fully 1:1 -- West Jackson Middle School #OneJacksonGA
Lol, smart!
That said, studies show that they'll retain the info better if they write or sketch note, but there's a benefit to an image, especially if a speaker is going too fast.
#TECHtalkGA
A3: From a district perspective we try to have tools and policies in place to make our devices the most effective. We offer our teachers the option to use @goguardian teacher and our admins use the admin option to help keep our students safe. #techtalkga
A3: We have an online etiquette contract the ELA classes use which covers when and how personal and school devices will be used and how they will conduct themselves while using our @D2L LMS #TECHtalkGA#gwinchat
A3: plus we have Ss sign a user agreement contract during registration and we have conduct policies in the county issued handbooks #TECHtalkGA#gwinchat
Is that true? If you give no real instructions or directions, how high is the buy-in? I would have guessed that having some clear expectations would help teachers.
#TECHtalkGA
Biggest challenges are effective instructional use and following procedures on device care. Operational care intersects instructional here. #TECHtalkGA
Q3 Personal devices are supposed to connect to district WiFi and be used for EDU purposes when given the go ahead by Ts. Some schools ban the use, some schools support the use of personal devices, especially if tech resources are not readily available. #TECHtalkGA
A4. The obvious problem is having the device distracting or even ignoring completely the teacher. Need to teach teachers how to handle classrm mgmt with them.
#TECHtalkGA
A4- One challenge is helping teachers keep up with the rapid pace of change within instr. tech... by the time they get a grasp of something, it changes. #TECHtalkGA
A4 Con't: One of the things I try to preach, especially with chromebooks, is the fact that it takes so little time to close and open up and start. Tech should be used intentionally and not up for the whole time if not needed. #techtalkga
A4: no matter how visible/engaged/mobile I was, I had students last year who pulled up a YouTube video of someone playing Fortnite, typed inappropriate things in Google Docs, etc. Havent noticed anything like that this year and hope it stays that way. #TECHtalkGA
I think my question is: How much training are your teachers getting BEFORE devices arrive? DO they know how to handle the devices? Are there school / district policies?

A4B Vision software has been a huge help with this! When students know you can see their screen, pause it or hijack it to demonstrate is a gamechanger #TECHtalkGA
A5: designing activities that are collaborative and engaging and that encourage creativity/critical thinking. When students are engaged, they’ll be motivated and on task. #TECHtalkGA
Here’s what I’ve learned: in my experience, Pre-training on technology is not very effective. It only matters when it matters. I pre trained on LMS, devices and projectors. When I delivered 2nd round, there was little recollection of the 1st round. #TECHtalkGA

A5: teacher training, both best practices for device management and classroom management strategies. One strategy I’ve enjoyed is when a student device has an issue, i train the student, if possible, and have them teach the teacher. #TECHtalkGA
A5. I think it would help my teachers to have a policy where its clear each day to students in each class when to get on device, when to wait, when to keep it closed.
#TECHtalkGA
A5: This sounds over simplified, but I really believe that you have to think of the 1:1 device as a textbook in the fact that it is a device for teaching and learning. Do we play fortnight or dowlnoad seasons of family guy with our textbook? #techtalkga
A5: If doing work in pairs I permit 1 https://t.co/XuAavHSVcB & have them take turns, chunk activities w/ timers, when possible I go into a lab where I can monitor them. #model your expectations! #TECHtalkGA
A5: Effective use of technology for instructional purposes. I have a 10 student tech team designed to conduct product reviews on Web 2.0 Tools and the necessary devices for classroom implementation. #TECHtalkGA#gwinchat
Hi everyone! Sorry I missed this. Dawson Co HS media and tech, 1:1 iPads, lots of training, challenges but also incredible benefits. Successful change takes time. But we're all learning and have to remember to focus on all the good stuff happening! #TECHtalkGA
One minute until #TECHTalkGA is over! Did you enjoy the excellent chat? We will continue partnering with #TECHtalkGA leading up to #GaETC18!
Are you ready for the official #FlatGA?
A5 Provide clear expectations and high interest learning experiences. If Ss care about what they are learning, many of the other issues surface rarely if at all. #TECHtalkGA
You are not wrong.
I'm looking for the happy medium between pre-training & sudden class full of devices. It may not exist...
Maybe spend the "pre" time working on policies & post time working on actual device.

A5 Con't: I think that from a district standpoint you do what you can to head that off before it starts. Building trust with your students and Ts at the beginning of the year or when you go 1:1 and let them know what's up! #techtalkga
Great chat tonight, #TECHtalkGA! Thanks to everyone who participated! If you want you or your dist tagged for a reminder next week, fill out this form! https://t.co/Pa3x4ObCp2
