Hi all from Kevin in Ireland.Im a Teaching Principal with Irelands first and only school STEAM Room .STEAM if my new Curriculum ...Code my new text #whatisschool
A1: I believe that although some aspects of that statement are true, for the most part you need experience and the capability of doing something to teach it. #whatisschool
A1. Feel more like those who can’t, lead. Female dominated industry, yet male dominated leadership. Would love to see more equity! #OpensCanOfWorms#whatisschool
I think that the statement has more or less truth depending on the subject. Like in football, there is a curve on skill and experience. Once you have the experience to teach, you are likely too old to play in the league. #whatisschool
A1: It’s just straight ignorance and a lack of appreciation for what Ts do every day. What some don’t understand, they criticize. Makes them feel better. #whatisschool
A1)Its annoying at first, but some people will never understand our passion/vision.I spend less time rationalizing to these people, surround myself with people who can push or challenge me further while I am busy working towards my goals #whatisschool.
Exactly! Those are not just ‘students’ in my room but those are my ‘kids.’ I take ownership of them and want to provide them with the best education for the future. #whatisschool
yes we have and I chose to become a teacher instead of going to med school - I CAN DO a lot and had my choice of careers and I chose to work with children. #whatisschool
Even if you have spent years studying and mastering a subject doesn’t mean you can be an expert at teaching it to someone. That’s a whole different skill set. I learned that much from tutoring ONE time #whatisschool
that annoys me to no end...Ts take courses over the summer, plan and grade over their weekends, fight for their Ss to ensure they get what they need to be successful. #whatisschool

A2: "You have ALL summer off, don't complain." One of the biggest misconceptions I hear. I'd love for an outsider to spend a day in my world of work which lasts 12-14 hours some days! #whatisschool
A2: We can change these misconceptions by being ADVOCATES for our profession. Spread our words and messages for everyone to hear loudly and clearly! Showcase what we are doing every day! #whatisschool
A2)common misconceptions : Teachers get to enjoy the school holiday breaks! The thinking that teaching alphabets and numbers is easy peasy! #whatisschool
A2. That the four years I spent at university (plus the 2 for the masters) is less valuable than the four my engineer friends spent at uni. #whatisschool
A1: I also see it as a way for ppl to lash out at how we have taught in the past. To me, it is a reinforcement to focus on teaching actual real world skills. #whatisschool
A2)Changing career after break, I have heard people say, ‘you choose the right career, now your children are older, in teaching you get to be back home when they are home, you get the holidays when they have!’ My passion for learning & teaching is oblivious to them. #whatisschool
A2: that we work 8-4, have summers off and just drill students. I would love to invite more people inside of my classroom for a day or even a week to get a glimpse of what I really do. My husband and dogs knows how many hours I put in. They hear my success stories! #whatisschool
Yes! I started doing this through twitter and Facebook! Kind of ‘kill them with kindess’ by showing our passion and abilities of our students #whatisschool
A2: Big misconception is that this job is easy with lots of free time and no emotional attachmentst (8-3) I think we have to continue to do right by Ss and model our dedication! It helps to tell the good things happening via social media #whatisschool
A2.We don't know what we're doing so we need politicians & academics to tell us what we do. Paraphrase:"The only good research is the research you do with the kids in front of you right now- what do they want? What do thy need? What do they respond to best? Do that." #whatisschool
A big misconception is that curriculum is narrowly focused aromatherapy nd academic subjects s and childrens social and emotional development is not a teachers work #whatisschool
A2 that we enjoy a lot of holidays, they dont know Ts work 365days a year 24/7 wherever we go and what we see is connected to how it could be used in our classes #whatisschool
A2: another misconeption is that we get paid over the holiday for sitting on our butts - our pay is just spread out over 12 months. If it wasn't, my paychecks would be higher in the 10 months. #whatisschool 🙄🙄
A2: Misconception: Teachers get so much time off. Personally I use my summers to take courses or professional development to help me in my role as an educator. #whatisschool
A2. Finally as a teacher, apart from mild irritation, I don’t really care about others misconceptions as I find joy in what I do and my students opinion is the one that matters #whatisschool
A2) The biggest misconception about teachers is that we are expensive babysitters with summers “off.” Featuring classroom learning in a daily visible platform helps to change perceptions & promotes Ss & stakeholder positivity #whatisschool
Q3) Does the Teacher as “Sage on the Stage” still describe the teachers in your school, or have they transformed to “Guides on the Side”? Why? #whatisschool
A2: Another big misconception is that we have more control over what we have to teach. There are many times we want to do cool projects and we get told no. #whatisschool
JoDee ClintonOK. HS sped T by day and alted History T by night. Summers spent as Discovery T for Summer Playground grades 1-6. Who says Ts have summers off?? #whatisschool
Experience has taught me you really can't, people are going to believe that they believe about teachers and trying to change that is using energy I could positively use somewhere else #whatisschool
A3: I think we are very diverse and that is what makes it great - we have a bit of everything .... Sometimes we need to support others to grow #whatisschool
From what I’ve noticed as a student at my school, the teachers are definitely more “guide on the side.” They focus a lot on student choice and try to support us in what we choose. #whatisschool
#whatisschool Thanksgiving becomes a 5day celebration with family. When a full time teacher looked forward to it because the value of being with family can never be dimished by naysayers to our profession. #teachingAintForTheFaintOfHeart
Thankful for so much. Saw #wonderthemovie with my grandkids, son, daughter, son in law & his brother today. Moving, heartfelt, touching; not enough adjectives to say how much I wish everyone could see it. #reslience#ChooseKind
A3: We are all guiding one another in this profession. It truly takes a VILLAGE! We need to empower one another to grow personally and professionally! Our kids deserve it!! #whatisschool
A3 There is a lot of transitioning, I have definitely moved away from being in the front, I want Ss to lead, to peer teach, and have been doing stations in class #whatisschool
A3: Our EdTech Coaches (@techstarteacher@ATorrens84@JegsAUS) are "Guides on the Side" but they are so much more than that - I like to think of them as INSPIRATION FACTORIES for our teachers, parents and students #whatisschool
A3: to be honest, we have a little bit of both. I think it really depends on the teacher’s personality, experience, and determination. We are a team to support each other no matter what. #whatisschool
I agree. Although, I think there should be a split of some sort. There should be some guidance or authority so that he students don’t get off track #whatisschool
A3: We have a mix but working to have more lessons that empower Ss to take control of their learning. Our learning platform is the Workshop Model so kids do most of the work. This is important. #whatisschool
A3)I don’t think being a ‘sage on stage’ is possible anymore. With so much information available around, no one can be gatekeepers anymore. We need to inspire others with our actions and guide as & when required #whatisschool
A3: We are rapidly evolving into a school that focuses on Ss creating their own learning opportunities. Makerspace and PBL. Ss just participated in a Shark Tank. Love being a T at my school! #whatisschool
Dang. Now I need to make something up.
I come up with crazy ideas that I try and kids to latch on to and run with. And I deflect them when things are getting too easy
#whatisschool
I didn't mean to be disrespectful and I apologise if that is the way it came across. For me all the movement and noise was just more than I could bare and I felt completely overwhelmed #whatisschool

A3: unfortunately is does still apply in some cases but you need both - Ss need to be explicitly taught certain skills and Ss also need opportunities to explore and inquire. #whatisschool
A3 I’d like to think that the culture of collaboration and sharing of good practice at my school means that sages are becoming more common. #whatisschool
A3 Im learning that sometimes there needs to be a balance. Sometimes what a S needs is explicit teaching. They need an answer. They need to know specifics. They need a TEACHER. Guiding is wonderful. Being that lead learner helps them take risks. I like more guiding. #whatisschool
A3: example: if Ss are exploring a topic of their choice and they want to write a speech, they need to be taught "what makes a good speech?", "what are the components of a good speech?" #whatisschool
A4: The stereotype for a perfect should be simple. They really only need one trait. Getting students to care about the subject and WANT to learn it. #whatisschool
A4: a teacher is a life long learner who also learns from their students. They challenge themselves and inspire others and love what they do 24/7. #whatisschool
A4: doesn't have all the answers, promotes questioning and exploration, builds relationships, addresses the social/emotional aspect, incorporates community and global education. #whatisschool
Yes, Sometimes explicit teaching is required especially with little ones. But they still bring in knowledge and information, that you learn from them #whatisschool
A4: Ts teach twice the hours they have to because they love and care about Ss. Ts could be lawyers or doctors but they choose to be Ts because they want to help Ss become successful members of society. Not many have the heart to be a T. #whatisschool
Apologies, Yard Duty calls. And it's canteen Yard Duty too
Thanks for that chat.
Happy Turkeyday to @teresagross625 and the other American lady #whatisschool
A4) I personally experience everyday how joyful, learning can be. The destination or outcome gives happiness but the journey / process results in ultimate joy! I want to share / model for others, help others to experience, want others to remember me for that #whatisschool
A5: I want them to know that I cared! I want them to say, ‘she never gave up on me!’ ‘She pushed me and challenged me.’ ‘She knew I could and I did!’ #whatisschool
A5: I want to be remembered for the people I inspired to be better (students, teachers and parents). Those that have gone on to be incredible human beings that make a difference in the world #whatisschool
A5 Good question... Maybe by parents Id like for them to remember me as the one who reached out and was a teammate in their kids growth. From the kids, maybe how i helped them take responsibility and ownership of learning. I still have a ways though... #whatisschool
A5) I personally experience everyday how joyful, learning can be. The destination or outcome gives happiness but the journey / process results in ultimate joy! I want to share / model this for others, help others to experience it and remember me for that #whatisschool
A6 @Juliaprestia4 a PST striving to be the best T she can be - cares deeply, loves unconditionally, is passionate about learning ❤️
#whatisschool#PSTchat
A3: My Ts are pretty amazing learning guides. They push each other to grow and find new ways to enhance S learning by continually evaluating their place in the classroom. #whatisschool
Q3) Does the Teacher as “Sage on the Stage” still describe the teachers in your school, or have they transformed to “Guides on the Side”? Why? #whatisschool
I am overwhelmed with Joy. And my brain feels funny. I think I have been using it this hour. Thanks @mrkempnz#whatisschool Thank you very much! I will follow all of you, I promise!
A5: I remind myself daily-I’m replaceable. So, everyday is a great day. I enjoy almost every moment. I don’t necessarily care to be remembered. I do hope to leave a place better than I found it. #whatisschool
