Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
Welcome to the official #dtk12chat Wednesday 9PM EST Power Hour Tonight’s convo is all around Framing your design challenge (well, framing a lot of things too) Please join us! #designthinking

Hey #dtk12chat! I’ve had a whirlwind day of #designthinking w/2 of my Chinese colleagues. Their 1st time 2 US. From @stanforddschool & meeting David Kelley 2 @dTechHS about to head home so might miss the chat.
I'm a former high school social studies teacher, current library media specialist & local activator for @fdesignschool as well as a member of #SWE17#GoogleEI cohort. The temp here in CT dropped 26 degrees in about 3 hours and has settled at 4. The vortex has arrived. #dtk12chat

Absolutely! Actually I can’t even imagine, but I could stand in front of my freezer and stick my fingers in the ice tray for a little immersive empathy. #dtk12chat#empathy2action

Q1 Can you think of a moment this school year where you would like to REFRAME your mindset after the fact? (Not only wld it result in a possible different outcome but more likely a different response from yourself) #dtk12chat i.e. approached it standoffishly instead of feet 1st

A1. I’ve been impatient with my grade 8 students sometimes this year. I need to remind myself of all the complexities going on in their lives that makes them behave in the way they do. #dtk12chat
A1 oh my gosh yes. . I'd like a redo from September 15 to .. now. I let concerns about long term $$ (our grant runs out next year) undermine immediate effectiveness in the #sicmbc. It has still been a good year, yet I know how much time I've spent on fretting. #dtk12chat

A1 Lately I have been approaching my mornings at home (SAHM) as I can’t be productive and present at the same time. I am checking myself on this to allow for some flex & pauses. #dtk12chat
A1 I was unenthusiastic about being assigned to a committee; I have made some professional connections that have been rewarding and led to new opportunities (even though that wasn't the purpose of the committee!) #dtk12chat

I wish my mindset had turned to one of "embrace the moment" & "let your work be your calling card" -- rather than try to strategize about finding $$, I could have worked even harder on making #SICMBC even more valuable to kids #dtk12chat
Usually it’s much colder in winter here! We have this weather phenomenon called a Chinook, though, where warm air comes from that Pacific and melts everything. #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat Mindset is very important and taking a deep breath to reset our mindset is even more crucial as the day goes by. Students are quick to catch on the teachers mindset. I actually teac my students to take deep breaths and focus themselves. This helps them calm down.
Oh how I wish Chinook Chinook Chinook would come down south to melt the peeps as we don’t have snow (although we had a snow day yesterday to celebrate blue skies #dtk12chat
A1 I have been trying to focus on actively listening to my students. It’s so hard not to feel rushed everyday with the millions of things you need to accomplish, so I’d probably reset multiple opportunities each day #dtk12chat
Agreed! I talk them through the transition from their previous class into mine... what are you still thinking about? celebrating? concerns that need to be acknowledged so we can proceed together? #dtk12chat

Q2 What kind of mindset(s) do you typically feel yourself leaning into, embracing, & FRAMING your outlook, approach, & attitude? (there are the standard https://t.co/RxePTMJvxL mindsets yet so many more)
A2 I treat “Everything I do is a prototype” provides me grounder, keeps perfection bug away, & is an intentional way to keep learning I wear this mindset on my sleeve #dtk12chat

Do you ever find yourself wanting to be so present w one kiddo that you feel guilty that another hasn't gotten your whole self? I'm wrangling w that a lot right lately #dtk12chat
A2. I think the one I lean into most is Embrace Ambiguity. I’m curious about the things that seem grey or muddy and let myself linger there and consider possibilities. #dtk12chat
I miss the snow! If it’s going to be cold, then let’s have some of the white stuff. Nashville sits in a reverse snow globe of sorts. Everywhere around us gets snow, but we don’t see a lot. #dtk12chat

I love my role as "collaborator"; sometimes my bias toward action and willingness to experiment cause some potential collaborators to worry and others gravitate to it #dtk12chat

#dtk12chat 19s I always feel some students are attention grabbers and some are needy for your attention. I mostly feel guilty for the inbetween one who do the work well and I dont get enogh time to recognize them.

You don't make it sound simplistic at all! Some people are really good at compartmentalizing and shifting from self to self in a work day; my brain gets pulled into a dozen directions & I easily atrophy if I'm not strategic #dtk12chat

Q3 As you (your Students) go about “Framing their Design Thinking Challenge” What are some of the problems/issues that make meaty DT challenges? What are problems that don’t work for DT? Any problems you wish were tackled via DT? #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat 21s no one else but the teachers understand the importance if class size reduction. Students preformance was much better when we had 20:1 ratio
A3 #dtk12chat I’ve been thinking about the homelsss, a lot, in this cold weather. I think DT works gr8 when it can show that toughest problems can be solved, and build empathy for the “invisible” ppl. Fosters #SEL along the way.

A3: #designthinking challenges need to be real, not hypothetical scenarios. Students must engage & interact with real people to understand their experiences in order for a design thinking mindset to be effective #dtk12chat
A3 healthcare, safety, connection, politics, community, environment, homelessness, weather, poverty, motherhood, Help Desk, classroom environment (I could go on and on) Problems that don’t work- simplistic ones & ones that don’t involve other people #dtk12chat
A3. The best problems can be found where the discipline and topics you teach live in the world. So many intractable problems in the world - water, shelter, climate change, intolerance, human rights violations - these problems need our kids. #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat A3 the biggest difficulty (i believe) that ppl have is breaking from their subject silos... great projects and problems to solve are naturally cross curricular ; it is those cross connections that give meaning
Alright. I’m still sitting in my car in the parking lot. I have to get on the road home. Love the convo & new voices on tonight’s chat. Thank you @scitechyEDU 4 asking the meaningful Qs. Everyone have a GREAT week! Stay warm, safe, and cozy!! #dtk12chat
Q4 Frame a problem statement by Headlining it (can be made up to serve this format) #dtk12chat i.e. the Help Desk creates confusion & chaos for students and teachers (it is poorly designed)
I love that! DT has an incredible power to build self efficacy and a sense of “changing the world” - future world changers (and caretakers)! #dtk12chat
Hrmmmm .. I think authenticity is important annnnnd it can be intimidating to tackle big issues when 1st delving in DT; why I like starting w joy challenge: how might we bring another joy via a Manila folder & 4 paper clips? Design for peer in room #dtk12chat
Our best have involved working with non-profits who are all focused on ending poverty but from different angles. When it goes beyond a grade and beyond the school, to a problem in society, students really get involved and determined to find solutions. #dtk12chat

And I also think students can learn loads about #designthinking mindsets by applying DT to historical figures, literary characters, subjects of scientific study, etc; I suppose it comes down to what are the key understandings that students need to demonstrate #dtk12chat
Hahahah it’s the zone of proximal development 😂 I thought of CrushLife hehe. Problem is the fine line of corny- kids r ruthless (but also staying cool is hard work for them!). What abt Pursuit? #dtk12chat

You can build up towards more complex issues once students have an understanding of the process which often begins simple design sprints. They are fun, positive, and quick. #dtk12chat
I tell them they can create a fantastic future if they use their #creativity to solve problems. We do a career unit that has them answer the question "What problems do I want to solve in the future?"Then they think about a career that can help them do that. #5thgrade
Point well taken! Students can solve historical problems in order to prevent recurrence or learn from past mistakes and apply to current scenarios. It all does come down to the why! #dtk12chat
We played with “life coaching” but no1 liked it. There’s the old character building/life skills. HMW appeal to Ss? I think by being as non-touchy-feely as we can. #dtk12chat

Not everyone needs fixing. I spent a few weeks in rural Rwanda. They didn’t have electricity, running water, or much money, but had overwhelming joy. They didn’t need a whole lot of fixing in my opinion. #dtk12chat
This is where empathy is so important. #designthinking meets service learning and is not about doing what I think is best for you... it is about understanding you and collaborating with you #dtk12chat

Is it perceived need or real. I think that’s where DT can play a huge role in working with those in “need.” We can listen and learn what people need not what we think they need. #dtk12chat
Final Q6 Using the #DEEPdt The 4th Word can you frame a few HMW? that you are marinating on going forward into February? (personal or professional are welcome) #dtk12chat
