#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
I'm Paul Solarz, a 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois and author of "Learn Like a PIRATE."
Thanks everyone for joining the chat tonight! Thanks especially to @mandy_teacher for volunteering to moderate tonight! #LearnLAP
Happy Monday everyone! I'm Jaimie, a 3rd grade teacher in NJ. I am motivated by the whole Pirate crew to try new things and become a more enthusiastic teacher and learner every day! #learnlap
Ready for #learnlap. Excited to be facilitating the chat on March 5th! Grateful for @PCookTech and @MichaelPortas for pushing me and challenging my growth!
Q1: Assigned Jobs are common in K-5 classrooms, but not as much in the upper grades. Do you have any assigned “Roles” or “Jobs” that help improve responsibility? #LearnLAP
Ok question 1: What regular practices do you employ in your classroom that foster students' agency? Do you have any that are explicitly for that purpose? #educacy
A1- In 4th grade, I've always had assigned job, but I really suck at keeping up with it! I forget to change them, and kids forget to do them. This year, Ss do what needs to be done when they see it. Some have created their own jobs! #Studentledclassroom#learnlap
A1 in our 6-8 building I know some teachers do have roles that kids play and this is something we need to do more of building wife in the future. What do all you MS peeps do? #LearnLAP
A1: When I notice a student doing a task wonderfully whether it be organizing their table caddy or assisting others with technology, I make sure to stop and praise. So, no, no assigned jobs but rather praise for doing jobs responsibly. #learnLAP
Q1: Assigned Jobs are common in K-5 classrooms, but not as much in the upper grades. Do you have any assigned “Roles” or “Jobs” that help improve responsibility? #LearnLAP
A1 as a @TheLeaderinMe school we do have all sorts of student job- my 6th graders picked roles they want from librarian to greeter to tech support to camera crew etc #LearnLAP
Q1: Assigned Jobs are common in K-5 classrooms, but not as much in the upper grades. Do you have any assigned “Roles” or “Jobs” that help improve responsibility? #LearnLAP
A1: @MrsKroenert and some others use the classroom ambassadors program. You’re greeted when you enter the room and numerous students have jobs that rotate from time to time. We’re a 6-8 campus. #LearnLAP
A1: There is a part of me that struggles with this concept in HS. Why do I need to assign jobs or roles if that is an expectation of everyone? #learnlap
A1: I do not have assigned jobs currently (7th grade US History), can't really think of ways to integrate it yet. There is a joy in yelling "Who wants to go on an adventure!?" and seeing students hands shoot up to help out however needed. #learnlap
Q1: Assigned Jobs are common in K-5 classrooms, but not as much in the upper grades. Do you have any assigned “Roles” or “Jobs” that help improve responsibility? #LearnLAP
A1: I have a daily Special Helper. This S puts the number on the calendar, the straw representing the day of the week, dresses Weather Bear, is in charge of lights, helps pass out snack, and is the Line Leader. #LearnLAP
Q1: Assigned Jobs are common in K-5 classrooms, but not as much in the upper grades. Do you have any assigned “Roles” or “Jobs” that help improve responsibility? #LearnLAP
A1: I’ve only taught 8th and 9th graders, so assigned roles or jobs isn’t common, but I emphasize ownership a lot. Helping students understand that their job is learning and asking questions is taking responsibility of their learning. #lifelessons#LearnLAP
A1: still working on this but currently have Ss change the calendar and help with the world wall when we move from unit to unit, nothing too exciting yet #LearnLAP
I teach 8th grade and I don't have assigned jobs, but I do allow students to perform jobs for me as a reward. This seems to gain more motivation than assigning the tasks. #LearnLAP
Q1: Assigned Jobs are common in K-5 classrooms, but not as much in the upper grades. Do you have any assigned “Roles” or “Jobs” that help improve responsibility? #LearnLAP
A1 Working on a Student Led Technology Leadership Team with Ss that are campus aides...We are a 1:1 campus and the team is beasting out with Chromebook implementation #LearnLAP
@JoveStickel I think the main job for Ss in the MS level is to be part of educational process When Ts make Ss a part Ss become more accountable #LearnLAP
A1 We have classroom jobs, but more importantly we are responsible for setting up tables, cleaning tables , and putting away condiments in the lunch room if it doesn’t get done the lunch@is late great responsibility!#LearnLAP
A1: In kindergarten I use many of the common assigned jobs. But at the beginning of the year, we talk about how our class is a family and we all have the responsibility to take care of each other and our classroom. If you can solve a problem on your own just do it! #LearnLAP
A1: Upper grades may not have as many classroom assigned duties, but they have many other roles (club officers, team sports, extra-curricular tasks, etc.) that require responsibility to others and self. #LearnLAP
A1 In a MS classroom I think this shifts less about specific roles, and more about stepping up. In every classroom there is always someone who helps me plug in the Chromebooks. I don't ask, they just do it. They understand "for the good of the community." #LearnLAP
A1 Washe only assigned jobs that I use is during @SkypeClassroom Mystery Skypes. Each time the Ss have different roles such as signs, speaker, researchers. #learnlap
Q1: Assigned Jobs are common in K-5 classrooms, but not as much in the upper grades. Do you have any assigned “Roles” or “Jobs” that help improve responsibility? #LearnLAP
I think it empowers students to take responsibility. If students rotate through roles, they're accountable to the class as well as the teacher #LearnLAP
A1: I have assigned jobs for each table and a VIP each week that acts as a teacher role . I notice that it helps my students take accountability for their work and classroom. #LearnLAP
For older kids don’t worry about the roles but it would be cool to do the classroom greeter for visitors and distinguished guests. Greeter can welcome, say what’s going on and explain why today’s learning is important. #LearnLAP
A1. I like k-5 grades having assigned jobs. However, the Ts must be consistent with enforcing the roles and responsibilities. Otherwise, Ss will miss out on the interdependency and leading at that young age (at least at school). #LearnLAP
As a MS Principal I don't get to assign roles too often but I do have "facilitators of learning" who run Google Classrooms in our makerspace and through student tutoring. Something to consider is using the co-pilot feature in @Flipgrid to let students drive discussions #learnlap
Q2: Not every job can be anticipated and assigned, so EVERYONE in a student-led classroom is expected to notice and complete “Collaborative Responsibilities”, as needed. How can we empower students to take on responsibilities? #LearnLAP
A1. A job I assigned this year- which I am LOVING- is "tech expert." This is a student who helps others if something goes wrong on a computer. It has been a major time-saver for me and motivates Ss to sharpen their computer skills to help each other! #LearnLAP
A1 The only assigned jobs that I use are during @SkypeClassroom Mystery Skypes. Each time the Ss have different roles such as signs, speaker, researchers. #learnlap
A1: the kids chose their jobs they wanted assigned to them. Some have picked up extra jobs because they like the responsibility and ownership. #learnlap
A1: Every two weeks we change jobs. Their favorite job is computer specialist. In this role, they help other Ss that may need computer or have some technical issue. #LearnLAP
A1+) I also have 5 assigned classroom cleaners a day. They are responsible for stacking up the books on display (got to get them out of the Spanish T's way), then later put them out, & go around & check that things r picked up & tidy. #learnlap
Meaningful praise is good. Giving students time to reflect is key. I observed a class where students review their social contracts daily, and the class discusses where they excelled and where improvements can be made. #LearnLAP
Q2: Not every job can be anticipated and assigned, so EVERYONE in a student-led classroom is expected to notice and complete “Collaborative Responsibilities”, as needed. How can we empower students to take on responsibilities? #LearnLAP
A1:
Debb, MS Drama
I don’t have many. I have 2 students that turn on backstage lights, 2 others unlock the theatre and light booth doors. From each class. #LearnLAP
A1. I have jobs assigned for line leader, and teacher helper but I have let the whole class know they are responsible for keeping the room organized. #LearnLAP
A1 I do have assigned roles that the students rotate once a week. The students have also have seen a few other roles that they take on and no longer ask. #LearnLAP
A2: By giving them ownership of the classroom. When Ss feel like they are an integral part of their own learning, responsibilities seem to fall in to place. #LearnLAP
Q2: Not every job can be anticipated and assigned, so EVERYONE in a student-led classroom is expected to notice and complete “Collaborative Responsibilities”, as needed. How can we empower students to take on responsibilities? #LearnLAP
A2- I found that it was easier than I thought! ONce my Ss realized that they could take an active leadership role, they were all over it! I'm amazed each time a S stands up & calls out ," Give Me 5!" If it weren't for Ss leading, I think I'd forget to go to lunch! #learnlap
A2: Within each group, someone always steps up as a leader. We (teachers) have to allow them to lead THEIR way. I am a little OCD, so this is something I have to work on. #LearnLAP
Q2: Not every job can be anticipated and assigned, so EVERYONE in a student-led classroom is expected to notice and complete “Collaborative Responsibilities”, as needed. How can we empower students to take on responsibilities? #LearnLAP
A1. In upper grades the use of "buddies" or "tutors" can easily be adapted from younger grade levels. I have my third graders work with a designated writing buddy every day. They help each other to stay on task, follow directions, and work through new content. #LearnLAP
A2. Ts have to create opportunities for Ss to take on various leadership responsibilities. This should not only be circumscribed to the classrooms. School leaders should have opportunities for Ss at the school level. #LearnLAP
A2: Modeling expectations for the jobs so they know what you expect. Also, make sure you praise a job well done/ use a job not-so-well done as a teachable moment #learnlap
A1 As Instructional Coach/Rdg Spec, I don't have my own classroom or my "own" students; but, our HS students LOVE being an assistant teacher; taking attendance, running errands, "teaching" kids who were absent. #LearnLAP
A2: By letting them do things! When Ts take over too much, Ss let them. We have to be patient, especially with older students who aren't used to taking control #LearnLAP
A2 I have an expectation that everyone cleans up the class, to leave it in the same as when they arrived. They love to be Tech Ambassadors and do extra work to become certified and wear a Tech Ambassador Lanyard #LearnLAP
A2: Model the attitude we are better together. We must help each other, treat each other with kindness, and step up to be our best. Teach Ss how a mindset of taking action to make the school better can create intrinsic feelings of accomplishment! #LearnLAP
A1: In my classroom I have a helper of the day. It is there job to do everything from changing the calendar to being the door holder. The students love that they get to be that special person for the whole day and that they get to do an assortment of jobs not just one. #LearnLAP
Promote the concept of a learning community as much as possible and how we are ALL here for a common goal. This mindset will hopefully promote ownership & responsibility over tasks and jobs in the classroom and elsewhere. #LearnLAP
Q2: Not every job can be anticipated and assigned, so EVERYONE in a student-led classroom is expected to notice and complete “Collaborative Responsibilities”, as needed. How can we empower students to take on responsibilities? #LearnLAP
A2 The first part would have to. Hold a culture of trust and partnership where students have a voice this lends itself to that ownership piece #LearnLAP
A2. I am working on this in my classroom. I talk with them and help them to see that the classroom is like our house and we want to have an organized house. Keeping it organized is teaching them about responsibility. #LearnLAP
A2: With my kindergarten Ss I use modeling & think alouds to show/teach responsibility. After they hear/see me go through the process a few times they begin to do it on their own. I give lots of positive praise when I notice Ss independently taking responsibility. #LearnLAP
A2: reminding students about civic responsibility and how we’re trying to progress as a society usually has positive results with my MS Ss :) #LearnLAP
A2 One way that I've noticed to empower is to appreciate them when they see tasks that need attention to let them know it's okay. I've noticed that they end up taking these same tasks on and being more responsible for the room and themselves. #LearnLAP
A2. Sometimes Ts and school leaders could recommend Ss for collaborative leader roles. Sometimes Ss only want for someone to believe in them. They pretty much always rise to the occasion when they are inspired by someone else. #LearnLAP
A2: It's important that we give students ownership of the classroom. When students truly feel valued and safe in your classroom (Build Relationships), they'll move mountains for you. #LearnLAP
Q2: Not every job can be anticipated and assigned, so EVERYONE in a student-led classroom is expected to notice and complete “Collaborative Responsibilities”, as needed. How can we empower students to take on responsibilities? #LearnLAP
A2 In class I have community material station and they keep their learning journals in class. often one person will pick up papers or gets stuff for the whole table, bc they realize it is helpful, not bc I said so #LearnLAP
A2 student leaders perform all sorts of duties and roles- cultivating an environment where students are empowered to take charge of their learning opens the door to S success & growth #LearnLAP
A2: Classroom culture plays a big role. If they feel like they are an integral part of the classroom community, they are more likely to take on responsibilities. Giving choice plays a big factor too #LearnLAP
A2: Start with yourself and think “Dirty Jobs” What’s the collaborative job nobody wants like trash duty. Give it to yourself. Kids will notice and soon join in. #LearnLAP
A2: it becomes part of your classroom culture as you build S relationships and a class community. They help each other out because there is respect for their peers and T. The more your Ss feel like a family and your classroom feels like home, the empowerment builds #LearnLAP
A2: Be instilling a sense of purpose in the assignment, encouraging each student to put forth their best effort, give them glows and grows, and be patient in their learning process. Being real = empowering! #learnlap
A2: I give my students a paper at the beginning of the year that says "10 Simple Ways to Keep Mr. Strunk Happy" and we go over expectations. Students do a good job regulating each other so that I do not have to walk them through every single step. #learnlap
Throwing this idea out there because it’s not a “traditional” job, but if you have a class Twitter account, you could let students post on it. Much more ownership, and they would probably remember better than us #LEARNLap
A2: Students need to feel trusted and believed in. Model expectations, create opportunities for responsibility focused on their passions. Students will take ownership when a culture of excellence built on relationships has been established. #learnlap
A2. We talk a LOT about being part of a family and taking care of our room. At first we encourage “seeing” what needs to be done. After a while we have consequences for not taking an active role in our classroom. We still have some that just don’t “see”. #LearnLAP
A1: My kids apply for jobs at the beginning of the year based on interests. Their jobs can be completed for morning work, genius hour, or dismissal work. Jobs are created based on learning modalities. I have DJs, secretaries, librarians, writers and editors. #LearnLAP
Q3: Not every student pulls his or her own weight at all times. How do you ensure that tasks get done and improve student accountability in positive ways? #LearnLAP
A2: making expectations clear and modeling for the students . In order to see those positive behaviors increase , teachers must give specific praise and feedback #LearnLAP
A2) Continuing to build a community of "us" & that each of us has a role. What can I do to contribute? What else can move us forward? Am I doing my part? What more can I do? We need to get our Ss asking these questions. #learnlap
Anne from SC. @burgessdave is my guru - finally found someone that “gets” my teaching style & me. I teach HS broadcasting & Animation. My Ss do have jobs, titles, & responsibilities. Makes them feel respected. #LearnLAP
A2:
At assemblies our school lets the Ss do as much as they possibly can. Honor roll assemblies are lead completely by students. Curriculum cafe nights are student led from every department. We actively give our students as many opportunities to lead as possible. #LearnLAP
I like to ask students, "I need your help, will you help me?" Make eye contact, don't do it in front of whole class. Almost no student has said "No" when I'm redirecting or encouraging them to join in. #LearnLAP
Q3: Not every student pulls his or her own weight at all times. How do you ensure that tasks get done and improve student accountability in positive ways? #LearnLAP
A1: I also assign jobs based on student need. I have a drummer and call back leader who struggle to focus. They look for cues from me of when to lead the class in a chant or celebration. This keeps them engraved and focused on me. #LearnLAP
A3: I am a guiding force as students work, but I am not going to do the assignment for them. I build my students up and praise all the good things I am seeing so that they will have a stronger desire to do their best work! #learnlap
A3) A lot of that I tackle in class meetings. Then I can have Ss decide what they will do to do their part (i.e. set a goal, decide one 1 thing to contribute). #learnlap
Tough question, because so many adults do the same. It's important to model altruism and putting the needs of the community over the needs of oneself. This may be the hardest perspective to get kids to understand. #LearnLAP
Q3: Not every student pulls his or her own weight at all times. How do you ensure that tasks get done and improve student accountability in positive ways? #LearnLAP
A2 by proving student choice, voice and trust, we cultivate a community that thrives - student-driven learning with students driving the bus — #LearnLAP
A3: I am open to ideas on this. I have basic ideas, reteach, talk with student, etc. the place I get stuck are Ss who are consistently absent. #LearnLAP
Q3: Not every student pulls his or her own weight at all times. How do you ensure that tasks get done and improve student accountability in positive ways? #LearnLAP
A3: You have to set up class norms and expectations for discourse and especially for group work. Have stems to help students hold each other accountable and to help them stay on task!
Be present in their discussion and use probing questions to help them find their way. #LearnLAP
A3 I think it starts by showing as the educator in the room that you are willing to do any job in the room. Building a sense of family would also help IMO #LearnLAP
A3. A culture of accountability use established. Tasks must have specific roles for each member. I used to have Ss assess each other’s performance on collaborative tasks. This is another way for Ss to be real about each other when handling group tasks. #LearnLAP
A3. This is something we have been working on all year. We reflect on teamwork a lot. Students also remind each other to help pull their weight. I use lots of modeling and examples. #LearnLAP
A3: Students often don't "pull their own weight" because of fear. It's important for us to learn what students interests are and what they feel comfortable with and create opportunities for them to lead. #LearnLAP
Q3: Not every student pulls his or her own weight at all times. How do you ensure that tasks get done and improve student accountability in positive ways? #LearnLAP
OMG, huge pet peeve is when teachers behave badly during PD... Leave trash on floor, on tables, talk over presenter. Think about others, people! #LearnLAP
A3: Due to varying duties at home, self motivation, and maturity not all students are going to perform he same. Let’s reward and praise for improvement and grow at their own pace. A respect agreement (set by the students) will help. #LearnLAP
Always foster the idea that this is OUR classroom, not mine. We're learning together, creating together, and cleaning up together. That means when it's time to so those things everyone has a job to be doing.
#LearnLAP
Q2: Not every job can be anticipated and assigned, so EVERYONE in a student-led classroom is expected to notice and complete “Collaborative Responsibilities”, as needed. How can we empower students to take on responsibilities? #LearnLAP
One of my fave examples- One of my Ss, who has struggled with being responsible, saw my calendar was outdated. (Wipe Off kind). She asked to take it home to update. Brought it back with errors, that a peer pointed out. Took it back, w/o prompting, & fixed it! #learnlap
A3 I quietly point out what I see, but I also give that power to the class. We work on positive ways to help each other stay on track. Such as talking with, asking questions, offering help. I give this student more responsibility to help them see their value to our room #LearnLAP
A3: With my "littles," I just call them over to help. They have sticks with their picture on them, so I have a quick reference as to who was in which center Ss are in, so calling them back is easy! #LearnLAP
A3: I think it’s a slippery slope to decide what constitutes equity or pulling our own weight. Instead you have to highlight the benefit accomplishing xyz will bring about. #LearnLAP
a3 Inquiry learning teams are most productive when all are doing all they can. We have little team meetings if productivity is down. Sometimes restructuring happens. #Learnlap
A3. A culture of accountability must be established. Tasks must have specific roles for each member. I used to have Ss assess each other’s performance on collaborative tasks. This is another way for Ss to be real about each other when handling group tasks. #LearnLAP
A3: Constant praise and support fosters responsibility and accountability. You must be a champion for every student, every day....No matter what. They watch and see who will hold them accountable. They want to be held accountable even if they don't think so.... #learnlap
A3 Don't expect them to be mind readers. Tell them what you want, and give them help getting there. Some Ss simply don't know the HOW, so you have to provide them a roadmap of sorts. #LearnLAP
Move away from being the owners of the information...We already know it...Be a facilitator...My goal was to reach or connect with every student every day...#LearnLAP
A3 Assigning specific roles to group members, completing reflections on how the roles were fulfilled helps keep everyone accountable and of observations of group performance by T #LearnLAP
Yes! Students don't have the same instincts as you do, and they can't read your mind! Communicate openly, with respect for them. #LearnLAP#KidsDeserveIt
Q3: Students self rate themselves and then rate individual group members on their contribution to the group (they are aware in advance of this...helps steps it up early on) then turn it over to the adult. #LearnLAP
A3- My Ss "reset" each day, which includes reflection & class goal setting. They've set goals to increase student involvement. Last week they challenged each other to each try a "Give Me 5!" They felt on Friday, that they had met their goal. I would have to agree! #learnlap
A3. Just like a culture of accountability needs to be established, a culture of praise needs to accompany it. Otherwise, you have Ss just trying to be enforcers not encouraging each other. #LearnLAP
A3: every challenge is an opportunity! Praise goes a long way! Even with HS Ss. Just saying “thank you for ____” appreciating the smallest thing encourages them to keep doing right so they can earn another thank you. Then you move to “could you please ____” #magic#LearnLAP
A3 teaching teamwork - students are encouraged to sub in for sick or otherwise absent peers and complete their job-duty- responsibilities- just like they see their teacher leaders do for one another regularly ⭐️#LearnLAP
I teach at an IB school. We have a list of qualities that we try and instill in our students. One of them is the importance of being "principled" which means doing the right thing even when no one is looking. #LearnLAP
A3: I teach Ss that we are all in this together. If someone isn't doing their job or needs help we all pitch in to help out. Building a culture of group responsibility vs individual responsibility. High fives & smiles are simple motivators that make a big difference! #LearnLAP
Q4: How do you present mini lessons to your students while encouraging them to do the same? What types of mini lessons have your students taught? #LearnLAP
A3: I often have a “discussion boss” that helps keep others on task and focused. The kids are praised and encouraged to keep trying and grow as student leaders #learnlap
We're working on getting our classrooms under a "House" system. Each period is a House that competes against other periods and within each class, each kiddo belongs to a guild. They have accountability to each other AND are willing to help and support each other. #learnlap#xplap
Q3: Not every student pulls his or her own weight at all times. How do you ensure that tasks get done and improve student accountability in positive ways? #LearnLAP
A1) We are a 1:1 iPad school and each class we need to have someone responsible place them back into the cart. I think that may be the number one job. #LearnLAP
This is so true! For some students, simply being aware of their surroundings and putting away a pencil they are not using is an improvement. Compare each student's maturity, responsibility, and capabilities to where they were yesterday, not to the other Ss. #LearnLAP
A3: Adding goal setting, reflection and accountability partners could be very positive and create habits that will help them in all parts of their life. #LearnLAP
Do it in small chunks if you need to...It's tough, but then the focal point moves toward "how can I best help facilitate this lesson instead of lecturing" #learnlap
This is something I would love to see more of - in my school, I've seen students leading "good things" discussions, and I've had great success in students acting as teachers during #CSFirst coding time. #LearnLAP
Q4: How do you present mini lessons to your students while encouraging them to do the same? What types of mini lessons have your students taught? #LearnLAP
A4: I like telling stories to help make the lesson relatable. Then have students use @Flipgrid to share their own stories. We have #flipgridfever in 156. #learnlap
A3: I utilize blended learning playlists to build student accountability while teaching them to be proactive and prioritize their tasks. If students truly struggle, we set goals and use checkin/out sheets to build accountability and help Ss build along their success. #LearnLAP
A4- We are working on this. Many Ss don't have confidence in their own skills! Tech has opened that up! When we try a new tech tool, I encourage kids to teach me! They figure out things quicker than this old lady! They jump all over that! #learnlap
I think this could be very powerful! If it's a goal or expectation that everyone is contributing to the class community, we should be reflecting on that regularly. #LearnLAP
Q3: Students self rate themselves and then rate individual group members on their contribution to the group (they are aware in advance of this...helps steps it up early on) then turn it over to the adult. #LearnLAP
I’ve recently shared podcasts about topics we have been covering in class, had the students pick one to listen to, and teach the rest of us the summary via @Flipgrid! #LearnLAP
Q4: How do you present mini lessons to your students while encouraging them to do the same? What types of mini lessons have your students taught? #LearnLAP
A3: I love the family atmosphere in our classroom. My students do a great job of looking out for one another. It also helps that my students have choice and voice in the classroom #LearnLAP
A2-My 5th graders see what I have done throughout the year, and when I forget or drop the ball, they remind me...or just jump in and do it! Letting them take the lead has made them better leaders! #LearnLAP
Q4: How do you present mini lessons to your students while encouraging them to do the same? What types of mini lessons have your students taught? #LearnLAP
I have a daily PowerPoint that we follow. Students have gotten to where they know how to lead our math mini lessons. They feel empowered by this, and other students that might not listen as well to me will pay more attention when math is led by their peers. #learnlap
A4. It first requires the T to model what it takes to create a mini lesson. Then execute in the presence of Ss. Select topics that Ss excel in. Then they will feel comfortable in leading the mini lesson. Praise them on performance and effort. #LearnLAP
A4 I love this question please share. I would love to hear your perspectives as a Principal this would be great for me to share with our building #LearnLAP
A4 My students presen or teach their mini lessons during our ADI experiments. Whomever the speaker is, would stay in the group and teach the information used to create their experiment and their findings in 10 minute rotations. #LearnLAP I need to incorporate in other areas.
A4: With PreK, I spend about the first 4-6 weeks teaching routine and procedures. We will go back and revisit expectations as needed, but especially following long breaks from school. #LearnLAP
A4 I've used Flipgrid for students to teach others how to do some activities like Bloxel Builders. Some of them are nervous to present in front of the whole group. #LearnLAP
A3. It's all about relationships and communication! When Ts have good relationships with Ss and when Ss have strong relationships with each other, simply asking can be enough to energize reluctant participants #LearnLAP
A4. I usually start mini lessons off with an explanation of what we are doing on a PowerPoint. I model and question. I usually have students work in teams if there is a question or skill to work on. And usually students will help each other. #LearnLAP
A4 When teaching Ss to work with Chromebooks, we research one skill together, discuss it, and then practice it...This "chunking" up the info keeps it fresh and free of boredom #LearnLAP
Try and find the 'thing' a particular student wants. Not all can be passing things out because they would be disruptive to others, but that one could be the runner to the office, #LearnLAP
A4 I present mini lessons in a variety of ways:video, @flipgrid, notes, lecture. My students share their learning and mini lessons in a variety of ways too. We use different modes of technology to share. #LearnLAP
A4: It's not a formal process right now, but if something comes up that a student is an expert in, we give them the time and space to teach us about it #LearnLAP
A4: I utilize flipped lessons along side my mini lessons this way my ss can go back and revisit the material as needed. I build in reminders of expectations and use rubrics where Ss evaluate themselves. My ss also create their own flipped lesson to show mastery. #LearnLAP
A4: Collaboration was common in my classroom. My students often led (taught) a peer or small group while I retaught or remediated with other students. #learnlap
A4: At a K-2 School, Ss love to perform hat is modeled. I love catching them in these genuine teaching moments. Workshop gives them opportunities to “teach” how they apply learning to their reading, writing, math. #LearnLAP
A4: In my Principal's Advisory Group I have a student leading a book study on Managing Stress in Teenagers. We create questions together. Great "mini lessons!" #learnlap
A4: In kindergarten I find my Ss teaching when their peers need help. They see me helping and they follow suit. They remind each other of directions, attempt to redirect peers that are off task & work collaboratively to achieve goals. They know everyone can be a helper! #LearnLAP
A4: We do a lot of “share with your table” & “teach your partner” & kiddos are taught how & when “Attention Please/Give Me 5 are appropriate for sharing with the whole class #LearnLAP
Q5: A “ritual” is a repetitive step-by-step task that students can (and want to) lead without help from the teacher. What rituals do your students handle on their own? #LearnLAP
A4: @Flipgrid and @Seesaw are a great resource for students to create mini lessons. I have students teach a lesson on video and ask parents to respond with answers . #LearnLAP
A4 my students present a character thought of the day to the entire school through different technology tools. They present I lessons on math skills to each other through @flipgrid, @animoto, @bookcreator just to name a few.#LearnLAP
It is amazing, but my middles are a tad self-conscious about their appearance on camera. My work-around w/ that is have them record a @screencastify and upload that. The primaries I've seen use @flipgrid have not been shy at all! #learnlap
A3: this is when I have to take an active role to ensure that responsibilities/tasks are not above a child’s level & I make any modifications or adaptations as needed #LearnLAP
OMG, huge pet peeve is when teachers behave badly during PD... Leave trash on floor, on tables, talk over presenter. Think about others, people! #LearnLAP
A5
I observed a class where students ran a daily "share one good thing" opening discussion, all without the teachers input. So cool to watch them be totally student-lead while the teacher was checking roll #LearnLAP
A3: Due to varying duties at home, self motivation, and maturity not all students are going to perform he same. Let’s reward and praise for improvement and grow at their own pace. A respect agreement (set by the students) will help. #LearnLAP
A5: Morning Meetings! My kids can lead each other through our morning ritual. They can participate in class discussions and hold conversations. This took a lot of modeling and direction at the beginning of the year. Now it’s an everyday thing. #LearnLAP
A4: I loved doing partner math assignments where each partner had the same questions with different numbers. So working together required Ss to explain HOW they solved the problem, sharing just the answer wouldn’t work! #LearnLAP
A4: I like to create a Google Slides Template so each student (or teacher) can create their own slide to teach something. Lots of creative ways to use this! #learnlap
A5 One ritual is their Word Study Activities they are able to complete them, independently. They also complete their Flipgrid Responses independently they are familiar and comfortable with Flipgrid. #LearnLAP
A5: As Principal, I have an "energy team" that meets everyday after school and checks to make sure all classroom lights, computers, projects are off, windows shut, etc. They organize themselves and run the group and report back. Great way to practice sustainability! #learnlap
A5:
My students lead physical and vocal warmups in class and rehearsals. They also lead the critiquing and reflecting questions following activities and performances. #LearnLAP
A5 I always start class with a message to get Ss going with picking up materials, writing down HW and handing things in. I expect them to get themselves prepped for learning. #LearnLAP
A5: Students know to come in, get the papers they will need for the day, take a seat, and answer the Do Now. Starting class off the right way is essential (especially when you teach 86 minute blocks in Middle School). #learnlap
A5: All instructions/materials are provided through Google Classroom so the student just begin when they come into class. ❤️ No one needs to ask “What are we doing today?” #learnlap
A5: at this point in the year, Ss know our methods for completing primary source questions & show new students how to do them without me asking. Ss also run the show when we discuss current events since they know the proper format now. It’s so fun to see! #LearnLAP
A5 SS get absent work, necessary materials out before class starts. They also notify me via clipboard of turned in late work, etc. They start Activators/bell ringers. #LearnLAP
A5: My Ss LOVE being the morning meeting teacher. They take my place & direct the whole meeting. They call on other Ss to answer questions & complete tasks, they assist their peers as needed & they give positive feedback to their peers. I love watching Ss in this role! #LearnLAP
Modeling for students and then providing them voice and opportunities is essential for students to feel empowered and praised for their willingness to share something that they can in turn model and teach other students. #LearnLAP
This is a ritual that is all Ss! Ss also now have taken over our morning ritual of @classcraft- player of the day and random event- they were tired of me saying "we don't have time today!" They make me make the time! #learnlap
A5: Ss have a daily reflection that they rate themselves based on their performance in 5 areas: Punctual, Prepared, Productive, Polite and Agenda. They get 2, 1 or 0 stars for each. #LearnLAP
A5 The Ss are in charge of the clock. They get the their laptops, put them away, put up the chairs without ever being told. They actually get upset if I intervene. I get “We know Mr. O”. #LearnLAP
A5: my class always started and ended the same way, having those routines in place were helpful and critical to my classroom management, Ss do well when they know the expectations for rituals and routines #LearnLAP
A:5 The rituals I have seen and been most impressed with are transitions between activities. It amazes me how smooth this goes when a signal is given and the Ss move to the next activity without a word from the teacher. #LearnLAP
A5 Start our days sharing a high and low for the day...Quick, ask how we can help, and then follow-up...Don't have a large group so everyone shares every day #LearnLAP
Q6: Our students are capable of SO many things if we only give them a chance! What do you currently do in your room that could be done by your students? #LearnLAP
Q5: A “ritual” is a repetitive step-by-step task that students can (and want to) lead without help from the teacher. What rituals do your students handle on their own? #LearnLAP
If you've read "Learn Like a PIRATE" and want to connect with others at your grade level, add you Twitter name to the #LearnLAP PLN here: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv and connect with those who've done the same! So many great ideas we should share with each other!!!

A1 Yes! I have Freshmen now but I use to teach Elem. So, I have a doorman. I also have a delivery person if something needs to go to the office. #LearnLAP
A5: I let my students run the morning meeting and morning announcements now. We also have a reading workshop ritual and end of the day discussion. I’m starting to transition those to students more and more!! #LearnLAP
A6: Hmmmmmmmm. Tough to say right now. I have been trying to give more responsibilities to my students this year. @burgessdave gave me a lot to think about in #tlap when I read it earlier this year, and it has helped me turn more responsibility over to them! #learnlap
A5: our classroom ritual is a morning song and sharing out any celebrations from the previous day . They will not let the day start without it ! #LearnLAP
A5 Our morning requires math problems to be put up on the board for discussion. The students choose, write, discuss and ask questions about the problems. Took a while to get this routine and asking great thought provoking questions, but we are there! #LearnLAP
This year, my theme has been "Let it go!" I find that Ss let me know when they think there is a task they can do as well! You just have to be willing to listen and take a risk on these kids. They want their classroom to be amazing too! #learnlap
A6: I already have my kids work together to publish our quarterly news letter. I’m thinking of letting my kids start creating their own app challenges for Techbuddies. My kids teach it, but I create each challenge. This change would build ownership and accountability. #LearnLAP
A:6 I have always been the type that will do things myself instead of asking others to do it. If I want my classroom community to be a success, I have to learn to let my Ss share the responsibility. #LearnLAP

A6: I talk too much! During co-teaching with students and during teacher PD. We had a teacher-lead PD session last year, and it was incredible! #LearnLAP
Q6: Our students are capable of SO many things if we only give them a chance! What do you currently do in your room that could be done by your students? #LearnLAP

A6. One thing I would like to utilize more is peer-to-peer feedback. My Ss have become great communicators and strong listeners. I would like to give them more opportunities to give each other the feedback that I would likely give them while conferring. #LearnLAP
A6 I know this is crazy but I let my Ss tell me what they wanted to learn about. So we did. And their reading scores still went up! Imagine that they read about something they liked and became better readers. #LearnLAP

A6. Oh there are so many things! They could run the slides, keep track of time, fill mailboxes, teach a lesson and I’m going to start having them do more ASAP! I need to learn to let go of more control. #LearnLAP
I like the idea of having students help out their classmates when they miss class more often than they currently do - just a matter of showing them how #LearnLAP
A5: Students know to come in, get the papers they will need for the day, take a seat, and answer the Do Now. Starting class off the right way is essential (especially when you teach 86 minute blocks in Middle School). #learnlap
A5 Another ritual is setting timers between rounds by using the @alexa in our room. No one needs to be reminded for this. Kids love being in charge!W #LearnLAP
@ShakeUpLearning@jmattmiller Hi Kasey and Matt I am using this Health - Emoji Exit Ticket this week in my #healthed class 😊 Since you spoke about "Exit Tickets" this week on your Podcast, I thought I would share it out to the #gttribe

A5: All instructions/materials are provided through Google Classroom so the student just begin when they come into class. ❤️ No one needs to ask “What are we doing today?” #learnlap
A6: I have recently started having student helpers (kindergarten) set up center time activities. They are responsible for getting manipulatives and supplies needed for each center & making sure there is enough for each group member. They love leadership roles! #LearnLAP
Q7: “Silent Day” allows students to lead an entire school day with no help from the teacher (other than Sub plans). How might you make this possible for your students? #LearnLAP
This is a ritual that is all Ss! Ss also now have taken over our morning ritual of @classcraft- player of the day and random event- they were tired of me saying "we don't have time today!" They make me make the time! #learnlap
Definitely do that! My principal, @davidbfrench , gave our whole staff #tlap! #LearnLAP was as classroom altering for me! I use his ideas everyday and shamelessly "stalk" him :) (Not really @PaulSolarz - don't panic!)

Q7: “Silent Day” allows students to lead an entire school day with no help from the teacher (other than Sub plans). How might you make this possible for your students? #LearnLAP
A6: Empowering my students to present questions and find the answer . It does not have to be one or the other . Students truly can create their learning experience . #LearnLAP
Provide students choice in everything you can think of: flexible seating, type of performance assessment, location of activities, and style of review. Ss tend to be more creative than me and have many great ways to integrate different types of technology into lessons. #LearnLAP
A7 OOOOhhhhh good idea and question. I would use a document that they could collaborate on in groups. They could follow the directions on doc and comment to one another. I'm Doing This! #LearnLAP
I'm missing out on much of the great discussion tonight on #LearnLAP because I'm finishing my Chicken & Sausage Gumbo for our Soup-a-Palooza at school tomorrow! Wish me luck - I have to re-claim my Golden Ladle that I lost last year!
Q7: “Silent Day” allows students to lead an entire school day with no help from the teacher (other than Sub plans). How might you make this possible for your students? #LearnLAP
A7: We had a “Teacher for a Day” drawing where students get to pick a class to teach. They follow the teacher’s lesson plans (we sometimes modify for them). It was always a favorite. #learnlap
Q6: Our students are capable of SO many things if we only give them a chance! What do you currently do in your room that could be done by your students? #LearnLAP
A6 Since reading Learn Like A Pirate, I am constantly finding new jobs for my students to do. Pretty much have given up as many of the jobs that I can! #LearnLAP
A7. Jumping in late. Hmmmm that might be challenging in kindergarten. But, maybe we could pull off an hour. Or, maybe we could have some upper elementary kids come in and run kindergarten for a day. 😁. #LearnLAP

A7: @Screencastify + Google Classroom = Allowing students to self-regulate and take command of their own learning. My "go to" subplans puts all the responsibility on the students. #learnlap
Q7: “Silent Day” allows students to lead an entire school day with no help from the teacher (other than Sub plans). How might you make this possible for your students? #LearnLAP
I really with something like this was the norm. Parents are quick to say their child doesn't like to read. No, they just haven't read anything they are interested in reading yet. #LearnLAP
A6 I know this is crazy but I let my Ss tell me what they wanted to learn about. So we did. And their reading scores still went up! Imagine that they read about something they liked and became better readers. #LearnLAP
A4-Each kiddo is given an opportunity to 'lead', at some point, during small group collaboration. The Ss don't realize that they are teaching mini lessons, but just leading the group. #LearnLAP
A7: Silent Day is difficult in kindergarten but I can see it working if I bring in a former K student, from an upper grade. They know the routines and expectations I have and would be awesome guides for my present Ss. I may just have to try this! They would love it! #LearnLAP
A7 I do something like this on our "work days." Directions are given on the SmartBoard, but I don't do any teaching or whole class instruction. They work the entire class to accomplish goals for the day. I focus on conferencing and feedback #LearnLAP
A5. I do think that rituals give students a sense of safety in that routine and it takes down the anxiety of what's coming around the corner. I do have a routine to every day and all students have an important job within that routine throughout the week. #LearnLAP
What a neat idea. Especially for those days when your really are out! It's very comforting to know Ss can keep themselves on track and help a substitute teacher along. I imagine this would require a lot of build-up and gradual release of responsibilities. #LearnLAP

Q8: The end goal is to improve leadership skills (which includes knowing when and how to follow others). What can teachers do to help guide this process? #LearnLAP
A7: what a neat concept! I can see this working by just trusting my students. We have all the tools they need in the classroom to be successful at this . My students know our go to technology apps for each subject . I know they would rock this 😀#LearnLAP
A7: wow, I’ve never done this! But my sub plans usually consist of flipped lessons so they can work at their own pace but still be supported. Their playlists are tailored to their needs and independent level. This way I am free to pull guided groups. #LearnLAP
I like the idea of having students help out their classmates when they miss class more often than they currently do - just a matter of showing them how #LearnLAP
A8: MODEL IT! Students need to see effective leadership in their lives to know what effective leadership is. So make sure you are being that positive, effective force. #learnlap
A7: We’ve Set our date, May 31, and we’re practising at certain times already! The Ss are SO EXCITED!😊👍🏻I’m worried I’ll be doing lots of push-ups😜#LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A5: lots and lots of modeling!! I liked how the book discussed teaching in the moment and redirecting students throughout the process of becoming leaders.
A7. I want to try silent day so bad! I’m not sure my kiddos are ready for this yet. I want to talk to them about it more and then try it in chunks before we do the whole day. I think it would be fun to try! #LearnLAP
A8 model, teach, practice over and over again until expectations are clear and students are prepared. Build their confidence and culture as you go #LearnLAP
A8 I think veteran teachers need to realize that they are Educational Coaches, and New teachers need to realize they are Educational Coaches. All teachers have something to offer so SHARE! #LearnLAP
Always great learning with #learnlap! I hope you will consider joining me Thursday at 9pm in #waledchat when we reflect on lesson planning! It will be a blast!
Thanks SO much to @mandy_teacher for moderating an OUTSTANDING #LearnLAP & everyone who participated!
Please join us next week as @teresagross625 & @emilyfranESL moderate. TOPIC: "Igniting Potential to Light Up Passion!"
For now, jump on over to #tlap for more great discussion!
A8- encourage Ss- Praise S attempts to lead, even if it doesn't quite work out! Let Ss take the risk without fear of being shut down. I think it is harder for the T to give up control sometimes, than for the Ss to assume it. #learnlap
#LearnLAP A7: I’m trying to build up to a silent “half day” and then a “silent day”, to get my kids really hooked!! They LOVE the idea. I do a lot of questioning or redirecting them to other students when they ask me questions that others can answer.
A8: Being courageous & leading in a variety of ways, demonstrating ways of supporting student leaders, trusting our kiddos & providing a safe environment that offers opportunity to lead in our classroom #LearnLAP

#LearnLAP A6: I want to do more student led mini lessons!! I do all small groups during workshop time and I’m sure they could do that!! Also, I can have students lead math warm up RITUALS!
A8: Rotation, Rotation and Rotation. Everyone gets a different experience each time we work in groups . It is easy to fall into letting the same students take over just for the sake of time. It teaches patience and how to encourage others! #LearnLAP
Q8: The end goal is to improve leadership skills (which includes knowing when and how to follow others). What can teachers do to help guide this process? #LearnLAP
A8. I think with lots of reflection and modeling you can have lots of leaders in your classroom. The natural leaders will come out right away and with support and encouragement from the team others will start to follow. #LearnLAP
With RtI I only see students about 20 minutes at a time, but it tends to be more direct instruction. I'm thinking about how it could release some of it as the year goes along #LearnLAP
A8: Teachers can encourage and praise their students. It's important for teachers to model risk taking and let their students know that it is ok to fail. #LearnLAP
