A1: Helping students...
be aware of their power to think differently
and
have the confidence to act on that creativity
...even if there is no audience.
#masterychat
A1: Thinking beyond the traditional rows and the grey of perpetual sit-and-get, and painting broad strokes of innovation and rethinking how we learn. #masterychat
Hi all! I'm a few minutes late b/c I had to make my spirulina smoothie, but I'm here now! I'm Tami, an international T down in Mexico (originally from California). #MasteryChat
Hello #teachmindful and #masterychat. Jumping back and forth. "Torn Between Two Lovers Feeling Like a Fool" comes to mind. Luis from RI. I'm a HS ELL teacher, tech coach, and Director.
A1: Creativity is the ability to give something back that was not given to you. To produce something in a way that is meaningful, and to think about problems and questions, and to create your own questions to spur you on #masterychat
A1 Thinking & preparing the classroom in a way that will allow Ss to think differently It can be words, pedagogy, art, signs, etc. but it just has to get them thinking different #masterychat
A1. Creativity for me means that a lesson or approach can be viewed “x” amount of ways depending on “x” amount of students you have. Endless possibilities for answers, conversations, and ways to assess understanding means you made something pretty awesome & creative #masterychat
A1: Creativity in the classroom is allowing the students different opportunities to demonstrate mastery of a concept... doesn't always have to be a written essay or multiple choice questions... for teachers it looks like taking chances & trying new things! #MasteryChat
A1: Creativity means think outside the box. Challenge the status quo and be different. I encourage my teachers and staff to do things different in order to improve. The most dangerous words in education are “we have always done it this way”. #masterychat
A1: Creativity in the classroom means the option/ability to think freely abt a subject or area and demonstrate those thoughts in a unique way! #MasteryChat
A1: Creativity is simply making something - doesn't have to be this big elaborate thing. Anytime we start with nothing and make something, we're being creative. #MasteryChat
A1: In the classroom, creativity means taking a risk to create something that has value. It may not be new to the world, but if it is new to student, that is a good start. #MasteryChat
A1: Creativity in the classroom is allowing students freedom to explore how they want to tackle a problem, or show mastery of a concept. Honoring uniqueness. #CookieCutterNotWelcome#MasteryChat
A1: Creativity is all about sparking that special wow in Ss. It allows for Ss and Ts to engage in productive activities that promote Ss achievement and help Ts improve their craft. #MasteryChat
A1 - Creativity is being able to solve problems that you weren’t expecting and find ways to motivate students who others thought were unreachable #teachbetter#masterychat
A1: After reading #tlap, I know that creativity is something that can be developed. I like to view myself as a creative person, and I am always thinking of ways to make something ordinary transform. #masterychat
A1. Creativity for me means that a lesson or approach can be viewed “x” amount of ways depending on “x” amount of students you have. Endless possibilities for answers, conversations, and ways to assess understanding means you made something pretty awesome & creative #masterychat
A1 - To me it’s about creating an experience that excites and empowers students. It doesn’t have to be something new, but rather it’s how we present something that we are passionate about. #masterychat
#masterychat Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth--Mike Tyson
Creativity is how you respond to the unplanned. Both Ss and Ts encounter things they didn't plan on. Once the emotions settle, how does the mind respond? To me, that's creativity.
A1 For me creativity in the classroom is open ended work that allows students to come up with something truly unique. It's also problem solving that comes from students finding "creative" ways to meet challenges. #masterychat
A1 Creativity in the classroom is stepping away from what's always been done and walking towards what could possibly be done I like students to have a voice to have a choice to have some control over their learning while facilitating the entire process. #masterychat
A1. Creativity is letting the imagination run wild! Freely expressing your ideas and putting them into action through creating, designing, making, synthesizing, building, etc. #masterychat
Creativity is giving students the option to wow you with something not on the lesson plans. Usually better than anything I could have planned! #MasteryChat
A1 Literally just got home but could not miss #MasteryChat! Creativity in 2nd grade is incorporating room transformations, chants, cheers to engage our Ss
A1 For me creativity in the classroom is open ended work that allows students to come up with something truly unique. It's also problem solving that comes from students finding "creative" ways to meet challenges. #masterychat
Creativity is a hard concept for@me to wrap my brain around! It's huge, but if I had to start somewhere...it's a critical skill for students to build and develop, a skill where they pursue interests, show what they know, in a way that makes sense to them #masterychat
A1: At its core, creativity connotes the choice/agency of the creator. Whether this emerges from a skill or product, the creative output is a reflection of the composer. #masterychat
A1 creativity is finding something wonderful in the ordinary. Making something that is new and exciting to you and as educators we need to inspire the students to take the risk to be creative. #masterychat
Being creative is all about making something your own. It is not limited to art and extends to so many aspects of our classroom. From seating arrangements, to class libraries and how we engage our Ss. It is the decorated frosting on the cupcake.
#masterychat
A1: Creativity is definitely letting Ss do inquiry based activities where THEY get to build an experiment or test. Just about everyone does something different. Also I love "creative" projects where Ss can express their knowledge through art/music/visuals. #masterychat
A1: Creativity in the classroom is exploring new ways of introducing old content. At a digital school, there are so many ways to check for learning and understanding as we go through lessons. I love Nearpod, polleverywhere, padlet, etc #MasteryChat
First of all, great quote!
Second, I love that you bring up emotions. Often, in order to unlock the creativity in both students and adults, we have to acknowledge and cope with the emotions first.
Q2: I saw a principal create family book / film clubs - once a month he chose a chapter book for families to read together, then come to school to watch its film adaptation #MasteryChat
A1: At its core, creativity connotes the choice/agency of the creator. Whether this emerges from a skill or product, the creative output is a reflection of the composer. #masterychat
A2. Our admin team is making a music video to welcome back T’s. Our theme is “What’s Your Why?” Our response is #HTWP4kids and our song goes to Bye Bye Bye from NSYNC except it’s Why Why Why. The lyrics are top secret and it will be hilarious 🤣#masterychat
A1 I used to believe that creativity was about art and music. Now that I have been thinking and learning about it for years, I see it more as creativity of the MIND. Creativity of THOUGHT. Could this be produced in a physical artifact? Sure! But it doesn't have to! #MasteryChat
A2 I feel inspired everyday by the creativity at my school. Ts motivate Ss with purposeful games, lessons, costumes, stories, and escape rooms. #masterychat
A2: Many teachers in our school are skilled at promoting creativity through choice projects, genius hours, "wonder why" projects...we aim to make these guaranteed experiences for all learners #masterychat
To me, creativity in the classroom means changing something you might normally do for something outside of the box that you think might work better! #MasteryChat
A2 - I get to see so many amazing admins and teachers it’s hard to decide. Even in implementing #thegridmethod teachers find amazing ways to make it their own to reach their students! #masterychat
A2: Our math teacher uses her iPhone and integrates it with the lesson. She uses apps that enhance her lessons and is one of the top math teachers in the district. #masterychat
A2: An essential capacity for creativity is divergent thinking or the ability to see many solutions in every problem. This is an awesome part of the leadership culture at my school. Every team has observed the norm “Be flexible about solutions.” #MasteryChat
A2: I just participated in a token econ + station rotation activity that hit science/math/poetry/art/social justice. Not only were the stations (made by Ts) very creative, but as the "S" I was allowed to be really creative in my responses/what i valued. #masterychat
A1. The ability to explain, present, display, & teach concepts in various new unique ways which increases the interests of a diverse student population. #masterychat
A2 The admin @GrangerIPSD204 showed us High10 Partners & WooHoo partners on institute day Some Ts bringing it in the classroom to take down barriers #masterychat

A2 I've seen an admin new to a school use a #sketchnote style "map of my journey to here" during a faculty meeting so that she could get to know her new staff. #masterychat
A2: This Spring, art teacher @CatGilbertArtEd led her students through a guerrilla art campaign. Their products made positive impacts on the school. It was inspiring #MasteryChat
A2 I just talked to a guidance counselor today about putting up a bingo board in her office & giving Ss tasks whether it's for making a new friend or classroom behavior goals when they complete the task they put a Post-It note on a square ultimately reaching bingo!#masterychat
A1: The def of creativity that I use is ... "Creativity is about finding connections between things, even things that seem radically different, and bringing them together to create something new." - Arthur Spiros Procopos #masterychat
A2: This is my first year as an admin. When I look at the variety of teaching styles and personalities, I am amazed! Some of my Ts have flexible seating, varying arrangements for collaboration, and some just stick to the usual set ups. So much creativity! #MasteryChat
A2: Giving students agency—in how and where they sit (bean bags, desks, pillows, floor chairs), in what they read and write, in how they produce a summative task (photo essay, written essay, video, Adobe Spark), etc. #masterychat
A1: Creativity is imbedded in everything about life...it's in our words, flexibility in how we think, our personal style of doing things, and I love how it's not the same in everyone! #MasteryChat
A2: Our ELA dept uses creativity through sock puppet story telling & vocabulary charades...Physics teacher allows students to create own labs to solve problems/answer questions...learned creative strategies through @lead4ward PD! #MasteryChat
A2 We had mock elections this year for a government unit in Soc. Studies along with a trip to City Hall. Made the Government unit more understandable #masterychat
At a conference over the summer, I saw a teacher connect African webcams to nonfiction writing projects. It was a great way to get students motivated to learn about new animals while becoming better writers! #masterychat
I see our teachers here @Carondelet_HS use creativity in so many ways that I can’t categorize them all. So creative in establishing relationships with students. #MasteryChat
A1.Kevin here a soon to be retired Teaching Principal with Irelands first and only Primary School STEAM Room .Creativity/STEAM/Design/Artistic are key #masterychat
#masterychat Seeing @TechieTeachOtt build a Grid for teaching the Cartesian plane using the game Battleship and role playing Navy training......wow......that's pretty creative!
A2: I have been blessed with amazing mentor teachers and administrators who have come up with extremely creative ways to celebrate success & engage students like contests, raffles, and field days! #MasteryChat
A2 I love when I see room transformations for a unit. I also liked the idea of having soft starts to our days. Every day is a themed start such a Tinker Tuesday where the kids finish breakfast and they have the time before school starts to create with legos/objects. #masterychat
A1: Creativity does not necessarily mean crafting something new for the first time. It can mean simply allowing students to “discover” strategies and concepts that are new to them or presenting curriculum in an unusual way. Shifting away from routine tasks. #MasteryChat
#masterychat A1 Creativity in the classroom is the ability of the teacher to adapt the instructional environment to impact the students learning to the highest level possible. @PollyRyonMS "Magic Days" are prime examples of "adapting the instructional environment."
Yup. Exactly. Tears in my eyes right this very moment! THIS is why we do what we do. Connecting people. Helping them find hope and joy and progress in education.
So. Many. Feels.
#Masterychat
A2) Whoever was in charge of the bulletin board outside the office at my school was creative: It says something about creating together, and there are pens hanging from the board for students to doodle on the BB. I thought was a creative bulletin board. #MasteryChat
A2: Current Pedagogical creativity that is admirable is anything connecting to mastery-based learning, where Ss choose the evidence to demonstrate mastery. #masterychat
A2 Just so many awesome things I see on Twitter and other social media of educators setting up their learning spaces, students involved in it, recently I really loved how @RaeHughart set up her room! #masterychat
A2 I have the most creative staff. They are doing room transformations, building stages, creating environments that kids run to in the morning... it’s amazing. I love watching the students learn from these teachers. #masterychat below was a unit review!
A2 - The most creative thing I have ever seen was our Rock, paper, scissors challenge our whole school participated in at the beginning of the school year #chills just thinking about it #MasteryChat
A2: not sure how creative this is... but today, our admin had us go on a community walk. I teach in a city and we walked through the neighborhood, meeting people and visiting different stores and shops. It was a different experience for me. #masterychat
A2 I am fortunate in that I observe many classes. I have seen creativity in in WL classes where students are dressed as characters for the Day of the Dead cultural celebration. In art classes where students are creating amazing works of art, in music class etc. #masterychat
A2: There are many things I have seen. I am a big fan of Escape rooms to take what Ss learned and apply it to a fun activity. I have seen many teachers go all out doing this activity. #masterychat
A2: The most amazing use of creativity is capitalizing on our own failures witnessed in the classroom by our Ss as opportunities to literally think aloud & model for them how we creatively problem solve, research, or devise new strategies. #masterychat
A2: Man ... it happens all the time! Folks saying "what if" and then working fearlessly to look at things in new ways! So much goodness! It's not necessarily about a deliverable as much as it's about disrupting the status quo to always be learning! #masterychat
A2: Repurposing is creative as well. I have used the #Edtech Demo Slam format for impromptu student presentations to work on arguementation skills. The kids get really creative in order to win their classmates votes. #MasteryChat
A1: Creativity for me was all about going beyond PowerPoint and getting out of the classroom.
Working at a nuclear plant afforded a lot of different opportunities for learning. #MasteryChat
Q3: Notetaking can be creative if you use #sketchnotes. Not about art! But can develop
creativity over time as you continue using this strategy. Share a sketchnote you or a student has
created OR tell us where you can begin to incorporate this strategy in your role. #masterychat
A2: I'm trying to find creative PD options for staff, such as pairing The @Hive_Summit with Google Classroom to create a collaborative environment for rich discussions and sharing while earning PD hours. #MasteryChat
A2b. My most creative lesson is a superhero genetics project. Heroes are paired with different genetic situations and Ss create a super offspring, except for the 1 situation that ended up Ordinary Guy. #masterychat
Q3: Notetaking can be creative if you use #sketchnotes. Not about art! But can develop
creativity over time as you continue using this strategy. Share a sketchnote you or a student has

Loved having @idrawmazes lead a discussion and creative sesh on creativity w/my students! He delivered the message of having creative confidence, pursuing passions, connecting, & having a growth mindset!
#MasteryChathttps://t.co/QhKRHrMbDL
A3 - I haven’t done this personally but if you have an artistic student it would be awesome to have THEM live sketchnote for the class. I also think this could increase engagement a lot! #masterychat
A2: I saw Ts get very creative when it came to meeting the SEL needs of their Ss and still keep the learning happen within their classrooms. Creativeness is more than arts and crafts. #MasteryChat
A2. Ss have opportunity to make things using creativity and their imagination through an assigned topic with supplies provided in making in our STEM club and other various activities that we do. Ss use cardboard to create things. #masterychat
#masterychat A2 @pinkpatterson oversees the magic that occurs when @PollyRyonMS does their "Magic Days". IT IS AMAZING! As a spouse of a teacher there, I am also involved in transforming my wife's room to a "magical place" where learning occurs.
Q3: Notetaking can be creative if you use #sketchnotes. Not about art! But can develop
creativity over time as you continue using this strategy. Share a sketchnote you or a student has
created OR tell us where you can begin to incorporate this strategy in your role. #masterychat
A2 @RaeHughart! She has opened up my eyes to bringing creativity into the classroom in engaging AND meaningful ways! She is the inspiration behing the Battleship unit, @ItsAMrY! #MasteryChat
A3: I introduced my class to sketchnotes last year, they were amazed that they could write/draw their notes and not need to copy word for word #masterychat
A3: I like to use #sketchnoting as a pre-assessment. Having students design sketchnotes about everything they know about a topic is insightful for me. #masterychat
A3 - I want to learn how to sketchnote! It looks so engaging and would be perfect for my Ss, who did some reason love to doodle but writing can be challenging! #MasteryChat
I haven’t used the method myself, but I’ve seen students use #sketchnotes when planning essays! They did this unprovoked. Rather than writing an outline, they drew figures, squiggles, bubbles, and wrote their ideas amongst the art #masterychat
A3. Dang, this is pretty specific. I guess I’ll argue the need for sketchnotes by saying, do what’s best for you & your learners. Not every great new thing applies to the masses, let alone a full classroom of students. That being said. I would love to learn and use #masterychat
A3: The most creative way to take/share/teach note taking and annotating strategies was using a document camera for an open-mic modeling of what students said worked best for them: https://t.co/abwEkxkYso#masterychat
A2: I thought this was a creative & hilarious way of extending our Harry Potter themed jump start back to school facilitated by my amazing dynamic duo of Admin's! It was creatively unexpected! #MasteryChat
#masterychat A2 Back in the days when Texas had the TAKS test (state assessment) I made this review video in which the students reviewed the test for the kids. This was used by all math teachers that year. the kids loved it! https://t.co/6Ym6hkVZYE
A3: Real talk I don't think #sketchnoting isn't about art. I think I could only describe what I see on twitter as examples as works of art. I try to use sketch notes in Social class and try in meetings for myself. They are not twitter worthy but it is fun #masterychat
Q3: Notetaking can be creative if you use #sketchnotes. Not about art! But can develop
creativity over time as you continue using this strategy. Share a sketchnote you or a student has
created OR tell us where you can begin to incorporate this strategy in your role. #masterychat
A2. By developing a “best practices chain” presented to the teacher who best met the needs of Ss that week. It is what football teams do when a player gets a turnover. “Turnover chain” The teacher would wear the chain for a week. #masterychat
Some of my content doesn't lend itself to sketchnotes (i.e. College Bio)...but I plan on using them this year in IPC! Specifically for planning on use for atomic structure, matter, and the periodic table. Excited to try it out and see what my students think!
A3: I have not done #sketchnotes but I am planning on introducing it to Ss this year. I would like to use it as part of the drafting lessons in writing. #masterychat
Q3: Notetaking can be creative if you use #sketchnotes. Not about art! But can develop
creativity over time as you continue using this strategy. Share a sketchnote you or a student has
created OR tell us where you can begin to incorporate this strategy in your role. #masterychat
A3: I love @sketchnotes because it allows the students to make the notes their own.. also provides multiple ways for Ss to interact with new content, which research shows has a high effect size. Have seen it used it amazing ways to chart timelines in history classes! #MasteryChat
A3: We watched a video on how donuts were made and Ss did SketchNotes for the first time. They enjoyed it. These are kiddos who typically do not enjoy writing/drawing. #masterychat
It’s a group that meets four weekends a year to talk about how women lead, why edu needs change, and to support each other through the process. #MasteryChat
Pretty amazing when we stop teaching kids to not be creative and just follow the rules, and instead, ENCOURAGE them to be MORE creative. Love it! #MasteryChat
A3 #masterychat Show your students the clip from Most Likely to Succeed where the High Tech High founder shares his notes for studying for the Bar. Classic and powerful.
A3 #Sketchnotes help me take time to reflect & visualize. When I have time I get more detailed. In a quick notetaking session I can use all the elements without worrying about notes being "pretty". I did this sketch for #HiveSummit on @jmattmiller 's session. #masterychat
A3 I have not done them but very interested because I think it would help in the class. I cannot seem to find how to do them though. I remember seeing something up here, but have not been successful at locating it. Help please LOL #masterychat
A3: I would like to see my Ts use this in all classes but especially science and social studies! I would love to see it in ELA, but I think Ss would really enjoy it in science. #MasteryChat
A2: I just remembered another creative thing. In my last diet, we put up Potty PD in the restrooms w/quick ed tech tips for staff. It was fun. #MasteryChat
A3. Sketchnoting can be used in classwork to explain ideas an principles when teaching. Using pictures with creativity for easier understanding! Sketchnotes can also be used by Ss for better understanding of processes in classroom.#masterychat
A2: I just remembered another creative thing. In my last dist, we put up Potty PD in the restrooms w/quick ed tech tips for staff. It was fun. #MasteryChat
A3: I and the Ss love using sketchnotes! I appreciate the mention of it not being about art—because I think that is often what holds many Ss back. They need to know its about learning—that they can find ways that work for THEM to solidify learning. #masterychat
A3 This is a sketch note from a 9th grade student studying the Great Depression and the effect it had on the US economy The Ss also used @Flipgrid to explain their #sketchnotes This was a successful unit that was easily measured by the level of student engagement #masterychat
Bio seems to be perfect for #sketchnotes. Med school students have been on to this tool for years, just didn't call it that. So happy you'll be giving it a chance. #MasteryChat
A3: I also have not used this strategy very often. However, I have begun to convert my presentations a less linear, more visual format so that my kids are not restricted in their note making by my structure. Our presentations do so much to structure student learning. #MasteryChat
Yeah! I'll also give students articles and then have them sketchnote the major ideas of the reading, and then all I have to do is look at the pictures to figure out how they understood the article. #masterychat
A3: @sherrillknezel did some awesome #sketchnotes during one of my sessions this summer, and I've used them to make adjustments to that presentation. Love them! #MasteryChat
The look on their faces was crazy. hard to believe that coming into Grade 5 most are already programmed to copy it all and tell it back the same way #masterychat
This is a good point. Sketchnotes should be about the learning, not about the artistic ability. BUT if we want Ss to feel this way, they need to see a variety of examples...not just works of art. #masterychat
#masterychat A3 I showed examples of "sketch art notes" to my Ss. Some went to town! This student was an A student after she started giving her notes #MorePower#PentagonT = #AlwaysBelieve
Amazing! Love it! I taught in international baccalaureate schools for most of my schools. Love the international connections that we can make as educators! #masterychat
A3: When I taught social studies (years before sketchnoting was “a thing”), we sketchnoted as a class. I could mention a particular doodle we drew when note taking & could see Ss light up with recall. #masterychat
Q3: Notetaking can be creative if you use #sketchnotes. Not about art! But can develop
creativity over time as you continue using this strategy. Share a sketchnote you or a student has
created OR tell us where you can begin to incorporate this strategy in your role. #masterychat
A3 This is a sketch note from a 9th grade student studying the Great Depression and the effect it had on the US economy The Ss also used @Flipgrid to explain their #sketchnotes This was a successful unit that was easily measured by the level of student engagement #masterychat
A1: creativity is thinking outside the box, drawing your words instead of writing them, as a teacher providing creativity to your students in work is important #MasteryChat
#sketchnotes are as versatile as, say, our clothing. Sometimes you get dressed up and THAT's the pic you post. Sometimes you have on the most basic clothes bc you're doing some hard work. Not pretty but gets the job done. Make sense? #MasteryChat
Q4: You don’t have to be “artsy” to incorporate creativity! Let’s give and take- share your best
example of using creativity in learning OR share your questions/apprehensions about getting started. #masterychat
I was reading a book the other day that cited several studies that show that the traditional model for education effectively "teaches creativity out of children." We're changing that! #MasteryChat
A2: I LOVE seeing teachers on IG or Twitter making books and book characters come to life by dressing up or transforming their classroom to match what they are learning or reading #MasteryChat
Q4: You don’t have to be “artsy” to incorporate creativity! Let’s give and take- share your best
example of using creativity in learning OR share your questions/apprehensions about getting started. #masterychat
A3 Confession time: I have never used sketchnotes in my class! Part of my job this year is to work with students who are struggling in some of their subjects, and I bet I could do some sketchnoting with them to organize their notes! #MasteryChat
Make sure that we don't confuse the completely polished and published visuals that we see on Twitter with #sketchnotes. All you need is some info and visual and viola! You have just amplified learning. #MasteryChat
Q4: You don’t have to be “artsy” to incorporate creativity! Let’s give and take- share your best
example of using creativity in learning OR share your questions/apprehensions about getting started. #masterychat
A4 - I think creating #thegridmethod was the culmination of a lot of my creativity and it has continued to grow, develop and get better as the @teachbetterteam makes it better along with all of #teachbetter Nation! #masterychat
A4 y favorite example of creativity is room transformations and how I brand my classroom with a class name my Ss have to live up to. This year my 2nd graders are called the Believers. #MasteryChat
Q4: You don’t have to be “artsy” to incorporate creativity! Let’s give and take- share your best
example of using creativity in learning OR share your questions/apprehensions about getting started. #masterychat
A4 in language classes we try a lot of crafting and artesanía! YouTube, Pinterest etc make it so easy. Oftentimes the kids take right over in instruction #MasteryChat
A4. My best creativity as T when teaching writing or making songs to help math class. I’m a huge fan of Re-writing song lyrics. Once rapped an entire unit worth of skills for Ss to downplay the need for cramming or studying last minute. Hope they laughed with me 😂 #masterychat
A4: Some of the best creativity is when Ss do Maker Challenges. They plan out what it will look like and create it. Other times is when I let them know what I am looking for from them info wise, and they show it anyway they choose #masterychat
A4: Using object lessons to help students understand abstract or challenging concepts in writing.
Some samples here: https://t.co/CchXEPGlJe
My third education book will elaborate how these work in the classroom.
#masterychat
A4: How do we get students to stop seeing creativity as artsy? My HS students think that's what it means and it's hard to break the context for the term.
I incorporate creativity in my HS classroom often so not apprehensive...just curious on changing the dialogue.
#MasteryChat
Q4: You don’t have to be “artsy” to incorporate creativity! Let’s give and take- share your best
example of using creativity in learning OR share your questions/apprehensions about getting started. #masterychat
A4 - I am not artsy at all, but I am creative and innovative. I try being things my Ss are interested in into learning. I teach Math with food and English with music. Reaching my Ss is a far greater need than traditional education can provide #MasteryChat
A4 I am far from artsy! I'm not even neat! But I have learned to take risks I flipped my classroom before it was even popular used flexible seating and lighting options I've given students a voice and a choice for a good while because it's sparks THEIR creativity #masterychat
A4: Last year I had a sports themed room. Every aspect had to deal with sports items. My behavior trackers were score boards. Data board was a football field with data posted on field goal posts. It was great to see Ss interacting with the room. #MasteryChat
A4 A favorite was when I set up the room like a crime scene to help with drawing conclusions. Huge hit because they were engaged and started putting the pieces together. #masterychat
A4: Most people are comfortable reading a book...start yourself and your Ss down the path of creativity through literature! https://t.co/7gcOWZ9scN#MasteryChat
A4 When studying characters, I let Ss create Eric Carle characters. They were also allowed to use the iPad. They were there creative ones, not me. #masterychat
A4. This summer I decided I was going to take own teaching questioning to let students lead their own learning. QFT https://t.co/RCIUuaMgyL. #MasteryChat
A4 One of my favorite lessons I have taught was when I was a 6th grade sicence teacher. We launched the year by having students discover density by designing their own experiments to test why a diet pepsi floats and a pepsi sinks! So much creative thinking happened! #MasteryChat
A3: I watched #HiveSummit this summer & @HeckAwesome gave a great idea for end of units! Doing a brain dump in a #sketchnote form. You could also do something similar for previewing a unit or a lesson! I am so excited to try it this year with my 5th graders!
A4 I'm lucky that in Pre-K we are all about being creative in learning. One of the best examples of creativity are the stories created during a fairy tale unit. Their imagination had not limit bc they were allowed to CREATE anything. We dictated the awesomeness. #masterychat
A4 last year I had Ss use @cospaces_edu and collab in groups to create a story, using chapter vocab, and other random selected words, then they had to create a song using background music of a randomly selected song, it was awesome! #masterychat
A4: Ss need to feel successful in order to continue trying something potentially outside of their comfort zones (like being creative). Set more parameters for initially creating, gradually broadening them until Ss don’t even realize they’re doing it on their own. #masterychat
Q4: You don’t have to be “artsy” to incorporate creativity! Let’s give and take- share your best
example of using creativity in learning OR share your questions/apprehensions about getting started. #masterychat
#masterychat I have to run and tackle work but it’s been great sharing ideas and reading. Blue sky day in Beijing so going to make the most of it. This is a great community... well done!
Isn't it fun when you get to that point? The world opens up so much when you realize that you CAN be creative without being an artist. Creativity thrives in the mind, not in the paint. :) #masterychat
#masterychat I honestly think it's hard to know what you've done that's "creative." People tell me I'm creative..but I think I've just solved a problem or done something the way any other person might if they thought it about long enough. It's hard to see the self as "creative."
Oh, how cool! Yes, I am also at an IB World School. I love it. The focus on inquiry and agency matches with my heart and values, too—it's a great feeling! #masterychat
#masterychat A4 Just my opinion, but the most creative ones in the classroom will be your Ss. Let your students shine by using their creativity. ENCOURAGE THIS! Your classroom will take on a new dynamic!
A2 - I used to have an administrator do “engagement checks” — a count from the door of how many students were actively engaged at that moment. Then, he used the data to discuss our practice. It helped make me aware of how students engaged with the lesson at any time. #masterychat
A4: I taught US History, we looked at WWI & WWII as part of the Scope and Sequence... used NearPod (with the Google Cardboard Virtual Reality Kit) and "took" the students to Normandy Beach.. them "being there" instead of just reading about it made a HUGE difference. #MasteryChat
A4: One common roadblock to inviting creativity into the learning process is the perceived loss of control where Ss assume a more active role than simply consumers of information. An ironic concern since deep learning is rooted in ambiguity. #masterychat
As a social studies teacher, I may reckon creativity a little differently. In my classroom, students create solutions to current and historical problems. They create arguments. They also model concepts like this one from World Systems Theory. #MasteryChat
A4.2 Question: Looking for tips to transform my room for our electricity unit. Any ideas? My hubby is an electrician so I have the materials. #masterychat
A4
CREATIVE FREEDOM!
Creativity doesn't fit nicely into a rubric, but allow it anyway!
✨❤️🧡💛☠️💚💙💜✨
"We have unbelievably talented kids sitting in front of us and many are starving for the opportunity to display their creativity." ~@burgessdave#TLAP#MasteryChat
What if you explained it as breaking the norm? If people expect you to do one thing but you do something else...you’ve used your creative skills. #MasteryChat
Last year they were called the Luminaries. I have never seen a class live up to their name like that one. It was amazing! Enlighteners, Motivators, Processors, Visionaries, Investigators...The best part is my Ss always remember their class name even 20 years later😊 #MasteryChat
#masterychat A4 When you collaborate cross curricular and then gauge someone from the arts, they give great ideas on how to make a lesson or activity more creative.
A4: my favorite way to be creative in the classroom is to sit back & let my students find their voice. Last year, one of my girls took it upon herself to write books & open a library under her desk. Sometimes we just need to get out of the way. #masterychat
A4: I feel I can be creative when creating lessons that bring in Ss interests. This year I have a few Fortnite lessons for non fiction texts, an fortnite escape room for math, and lessons using Bitmoji. #masterychat
Q4: You don’t have to be “artsy” to incorporate creativity! Let’s give and take- share your best
example of using creativity in learning OR share your questions/apprehensions about getting started. #masterychat
I love that! I fear that a lot of teachers would be resistant to it, assuming they were being judged or evaluated in a negative way. Did they do some work ahead of time talking about the purpose and the way the data would be used? Would love to hear more about this. #Masterychat
A4: something new we are doing during PLCs is teachers coming up with their own agendas. Agendas need to have meet certain criteria and every action has to improve instruction and student performance. Think outside the box. #masterychat
Creativity need not be related only to artistic expression. So much potential for creativity in thinking, writing, problem solving, or even peer-to-peer instruction. #masterychat
A3 I #sketchnote anytime I have to listen to anything and I teach my students to use it to remember and process ideas. I worked with a second grader who was struggling to read and process. This was his #sketchnote on spartina grass... #masterychat#drawingisthinking
Possibly try sharing innovate design, companies or people who have created innovated ideas to solve problems, that aren't art-related or necessarily "artsy," and have a discussion about whether they see that as "creative" or not. #MasteryChat
Q5: Allowing the ones that we teach or lead to be creative can lead to amazing results! Did you get any new ideas from this chat that you’ll use for the new school year? #masterychat
It often is! And not just with creativity- it is difficult- if not impossible- to see ourselves truthfully. That is why I rely on my other educators to help me see the good, the not so good, and the interesting. Having others observe me is my favorite way to grow! #masterychat
Q5: Allowing the ones that we teach or lead to be creative can lead to amazing results! Did you get any new ideas from this chat that you’ll use for the new school year? #masterychat
A2: At a nuclear plant the training department has a simulator that mimics the plant. The control room has a team with 3 operators and 3 supervisors.
We had a session where we hid the supervisors behind curtains and made them talk their way through the training. #MasteryChat
Q5: Allowing the ones that we teach or lead to be creative can lead to amazing results! Did you get any new ideas from this chat that you’ll use for the new school year? #masterychat
I recently found my new Ss engagement project for the whole school. I made interactive displays for Ss to vote on, but this could easily be extended to fit a lesson or activity in the classroom as well!
#MasteryChat
Enjoy! Thanks for being a part of it. This community is so inspiring to me because of all the awesome educators that get together to actually think, challenge each other, share, and grow! See you next week. :) #masterychat
A4)I got tired of having all my papers on my desk, so today I stapled two file folders 2 my bulletin board 2 keep my papers there,&eliminate the clutter on my desk. The yellow folders blend into the yellow background, but it's there. I thought it was pretty creative.#masterychat
A4: I'm artistic & creative, so my room looks like a fun, happy play space! This represents Ss rdg levels. Each flower is a different level. Classes are color coded butterflies and swarm around the flowers. I've added more since this pic, but don't have a pic of it. #masterychat
A3 #sketchnote pops up when I am attending conferences. It helps me synthesize information, make connections, and engages my colleagues when I share my notes. @NotabilityApp is my go to. #masterychat
A5 - I’m fast hearing a lot that Ss voice is what should drive learning, giving my Ss my voice and choice will lead to more engaged learners #MasteryChat
A4. I had Ss create rules, projects where Ss could use their creativity in designing various structures, making different things, creating different weaving projects, learning different skills to solve problems with creativity. #masterychat
A5 Sketchnotes and room transformations. LOL and I have 5 tabs open because I did not want to lose the tweeted ideas. PLN at work!! #masterychat#MyPLNisAMAZING#EducatorsRock
A5: Remaining open to various ways to reach students - and - ways for students to share their mastery.
Visual, verbal, whatever. I hear a lot of "get of the way" and I plan to do more of that.
#masterychat
A5: I definitely want to hone my skills at sketch noting. I think it’s a form of creative expression that would work well with the way I think. Once I try it, I will know how to help my kids wield it. #MasteryChat
A5: I think the thing I got from the chat is to promote creativity more and find ways to utilize the creativity of Ss and Ts in the classroom. Definitely going to talk to my science and social studies Ts about sketchnotes. #MasteryChat
A5: Yes! I need to make sure to get out in the buildings with the Ts and Ss as much as possible because that is where the creativity and energy is! #MasteryChat#EveryChildEveryDay
Q5: Allowing the ones that we teach or lead to be creative can lead to amazing results! Did you get any new ideas from this chat that you’ll use for the new school year? #masterychat
A5. Sketchnotes. Would love to see if our art teachers could sit in a few classes and sketchnote a topic and we can then display in halls, share, and turnkey for Ss or Ts interested in learning. Bigger idea, turn it into an art project to go cross-curricular #Masterychat
A5 so many that would never fit in the number of characters :) But overall, creativity means so many different things, just ask PLN for ideas, get Ss more involved, share ideas and learn from one another #masterychat
Saw someone mention incorporating Fortnite into their lessons/activities...that relevance is creative!
Also got some ideas for how to explain/show creativity to my HS kiddos! #MasteryChat
Q5: Allowing the ones that we teach or lead to be creative can lead to amazing results! Did you get any new ideas from this chat that you’ll use for the new school year? #masterychat
A5 I love the sketchnotes. I can't get past not being able to draw anything other than stick figures but my talented students can take care of that issue. #masterychat
A5: Yes! Excited to dive more into #sketchpads - especially since we are a 1:1 high school. It allows our students so much freedom, while making connections with what they are learning in the classroom. #MasteryChat

A4: we do performance tasks and PBL activities that provide opportunities for Ss to be creative & show us they have mastered the learning outcome in a creative way! I also love having Ss collaborate on projects using tech tools like @Flipgrid or tools on google! #MasteryChat
Q4: You don’t have to be “artsy” to incorporate creativity! Let’s give and take- share your best
example of using creativity in learning OR share your questions/apprehensions about getting started. #masterychat
A1, part 1: Creativity in the classroom is about the creative process. I love building opportunities in for creativity, encouraging it, fostering it, but I often cringe at how it's sometimes done, when it's expected or graded for. #masterychat
A1, part 2: We need to support the creative process and scaffold creativity into areas where we expect it. Teach the process, support ways to find creative ideas! #masterychat
Another perceived “concern” for encouraging more creativity involves assessment. How does one evaluate Ss creative output when there is no “right” answer or objective standard? Can freeze some Ts who rely on standardized assessment. #masterychat
A5 I learn so much from these chats! Bits and pieces here and there that I will definitely take back to my school. The best thing I've learned however is all of you are very creative! You may not realize it but you are! Keep doing great things because #kidsdeserveit#Masterychat
A5 There are a lot of ideas here tonight and I will have to go back through with a fine tooth comb, but the overarching message I am taking away is the incredible power of a group of educators sharing REAL ideas, debating REAL issues, and pooling resources. Love. It. #MasteryChat
We had a small faculty and active PLCs. He made sure we knew the purpose and always talked about it in positive or solutions based ways. I think the reaction of the faculty depends on trust and relationships that have been developed over time. Relationships first. #masterychat
A6 My #4OCFPLN and #my53s are amazing groups that inspire me every day, and even listening in on ideas now on Voxer! And just these chats are awesome, love the focus on this topic tonight! #masterychat
Great point!
Students could self-evaluate on their output compared to their original goals. What would they say in their growth narrative?
#masterychat
A5: I’m interested in room transformations to take themed units to the next level. Gears are turning! I would love to see what my PLN has done or plans to do. #masterychat
Q5: Allowing the ones that we teach or lead to be creative can lead to amazing results! Did you get any new ideas from this chat that you’ll use for the new school year? #masterychat
This is amazing!!! All of these things keep our students engaged & make them want to come back every day! This is true championing for students! Great job to your staff 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 #MasteryChat
HS kids can sometimes be really stuck in the "creativity is art" mindset! (I think, partially, that is developmental and partially it is because we have in many cases trained them to think that way!)
I am teaching HS for the first time this year! Let's share ideas! #masterychat
A6 My team does, but they're not on here. @teachbetterteam definitely! @MrKaplanJK and his room. I have to say, most everyone I follow. I'm horrible with specific names, but there's not a day that I come on here, that someone doesn't post something that's amazing! #masterychat
#masterychat A5 From a 29 year veteran Tr. Create moments that allow your students to show their talents. In math I try to let my students create a math problem that they have to illustrate. THE RESULTS ARE AMAZING! #PentagonT = #AlwaysBelieve

A6: I was extremely lucky to intern with @CodyMillerELA when I was in grad school. He is creative, inclusive, personal, compelling, and still a mentor of mine to this day! #MasteryChat
A6 I work in a performing arts elementary school. All of the teachers and our principal are extremely creative! We are steeped in it! @LPASlou#masterychat
A6 I mentioned her before, but I must again: @RaeHughart's ability to infuse creativity into every aspect of her lesson design is inspiring. I also need to shout-out to @CRCarter313 who hosted a creativity chat a while back and really has some amazing ideas! #MasteryChat
A6: Along with my interning teacher, my amazing professor @KCapLiteracy helped me grow into the teacher I am today. She’s creative with technology and new literacies, AND is the reason I’m becoming more active on Twitter! #MasteryChat
A2 I love when I see room transformations for a unit. I also liked the idea of having soft starts to our days. Every day is a themed start such a Tinker Tuesday where the kids finish breakfast and they have the time before school starts to create with legos/objects. #masterychat
A4 - During discussions, students write their answers on the board before we talk about it as a whole. Before writing on the board, they write their own answer and discuss it with a peer. It’s like an expanded think-pair-share. #MasteryChat
