#NVedchat is dedicated to increasing communication and collaboration of education related topics in the State of Nevada. Originally, created by Mr. Snehal Bhakta.
Hi. Kevin from Indianapolis, IN. It’s 10:00, but who is keeping track of time? @letscreatemoore ought to join in with the convo. She is 1/2 of a great podcast @CADPODCAST1. Take a listen. #NVedchat
A1 This is @Ekuwah, tweeting for CCSD FACES in Las Vegas NV. We support our schools & community with over 100 mobile & free University of Family Learning workshops. “No Summer Slide” is a highly requested workshop. #NVedchat

Ahh I forgot this part. I'm Sara, a K teacher at an independent school in Lake Tahoe, NV. I just finished Ken Follett's A Column of Fire and I look forward to more reading time this summer. Lots of running too! #nvedchat
I love hanging out with folks and having great conversations. Sometimes you don't get time to do that during the school year, even though I try. For some reason, people open up, share, and collaborate more during the summer...weird huh? #NVedchat
Heidi from Vegas. Trying to watch the game and chat tonight. I enjoy catching up on reading professional Bks I haven’t read during the school year and traveling. #NVedchat
A1: When I taught AP US History, I had to assign something for the summer just to have the time to cover what was required for the AP exam, kids were driven, it always got done #nvedchat
Lee. Middle school Humanities, work with @SaraHolm15 I always look forward to a mix of PD and time for some self care and reflection on the year #NVedchat
Look at all the EST peeps in here tonight!! Never really done a learning goal for Ss. I have participated in a program ina. Former district called #SummerStretch. Week long enrichment for elementary and MS Ss. #NVedchat
A1: For Ss I allow them to set their own and they can check in w/me. A few years ago Ss cod blog abt their summer or they did an A-Z book abt their summer. @ekuwah was the leader of this idea. #NVedchat
Q2-What I did was I created a "private" G+ group using our district accounts and asked students to post pictures of anything they did during the summer. 2 months later 977 pictures got posted...only 12 by me.
Then, their first project was prez of their travels #NVedchat
Principal 24/7. The nice thing is that you will get more done in 2 wks than you can get done in 2 semesters. That’s what i found in my admin experience. #NVedchat
A1. Summertime was always wonderful to have conversations with teachers about their hopes and dreams - what they wanted to accomplish. If we talked long enough, we often found solutions :-) #nvedchat
A1 I used to make it a goal to replan an entire grading period. Too much at once! Now, I'm making it a goal to read more books, both educational and fun!
#NVedchat
That's what I was going to say -- about summer pd goals. I'm finishing up my 2nd year at this school and I want to dial in/redo/super plan the ela scope and sequence for next year to include more long term projects. #nvedchat
R1: I haven't done a summer learning goal for my students. Our AP Calc teachers set up a "0 module" be completed on Canvas before school starts to get everybody up to speed. My personal summer learning goals usually involve #INeLearn conferences and reading. #nvedchat
A1: Summer A-Z! Make it a family challenge to “hunt” down experiential learning experiences from A-Z. Push your family to find an activity for every letter of the alphabet this summer. (Examples on website) #Nvedchathttps://t.co/zdsziIUaOs
I’m helping with managing technology for our district summer school. It’s virtual utilizing @CanvasLMS. We have over 1000 HS Ss participating. #NVedchat
A1: I teach AP so kiddos get a summer assignment. Some work, but also some fun stuff too. Highlight... they have to tweet a photo to me of them at 1 of the 2 NV state markers in Reno dedicated to the Civil War.
#NVedchat
Since all of them had it and I could control or "delete" anything that was bad...it worked. Plus we used it in class. It was nice having the same students for multiple years. If you don't, then one teacher sent a message to her incoming students to do this as "bonus" #NVedchat
Collaborating with many on Twitter I created #FAR - Friends and Reading for the summer #BookCampPD schedule. This blog post explains the concept https://t.co/lgfXQZDYBh <-- please check it out when your schedule allows. #nvedchat
R2: enrichment should be fun and engaging for Ss. How about a makerspace camp, learning board games, arts and crafts, coding, 3D printing, book club, etc. Learning should ALWAYS be fun! #NVedchat
A2-All learning should be fun. Probably easier in the summer b/c technically there are "no rules" so your imagination runs wild on the learning...wait a minute should it be the same during the school year? Hmmmm! #NVedchat
One of my challenges is how to involve educators from the west coast = different time zone when #BookCampPD chats take place too early on a Saturday morning. Posting tweets to website is first idea https://t.co/H1wN8JmJ0g#nvedchat
A2: Stole my own thunder with A1. I do other "Selfie challenges" in summer too. Also, all of our Juniors are required to do a Service Learning Project. I try to encourage the Sophmores to get an early jump during summer.
#nvedchat
A2 I had a blast with my EL K-3 campers last summer. We practiced fluency with readers theater and singing songs. We performed for our parents at the end of the two weeks. #nvedchat
Learned about this from a cool coworker: https://t.co/9eBZp7noyY if you dig padlet, it has some neat features. Free. Meant for retros. Immed. Thought of the ed applications. #nvedchat
Why should there be rules for learning? I’m thinking that guard rails should be set up, but the wide open spaces between allow for a tremendous amount of fun and learning to happen. #NVedchat#SecondDixieChicksReferenceTonight
R2: I've been fortunate enough to be handed a new challenge almost every year. This year it's a re-imaged Algebra Lab for incoming freshman. No HW, all #MTBoS-inspired classroom activities. So I'll play with that this summer. #nvedchat
A2: We have more time to focus on what we are interested in and do not have to worry abt other tasks me may not enjoy as much. Help our Ss find tasks they are passionate abt #nvedchat
A2. At one school we hoped to help new kindergartners transition into being away from home and, often, a different language, by having "Jump Start to Kindergarten" - offered two weeks before school began. #nvedchat
A2: I always went out of my to teach foe some part of the summer. It was a great laboratory to put new ideas into practice in a much more relaxed environment with less students. But I look back and wonder if actual time off and r&r would have been more effective #NVedchat
A2: I don't like to assign summer assignments because I don't know the Ss, haven't built rapport. Hard to set expectations before I know them. #nvedchat
hmm. That makes sense. I set up a reading challenge for my outgoing Kinders last June and had a special lunch for those who returned it. Easy peezy and fun for everyone! #nvedchat
A3-Sometimes it's the word, semantics, also the fact that it is a competition. Everyone loves a "good" competition that they can win at right? #NVedchat
A2 summer is for learning that can occur outside of education. this is where we read do hobbies see the world and take what we learn from there and bring it in our classroom.
I work at a summer camp so I test out new games on those kids and bring them back to school #NVedchat
Let’s tear them down figuratively. Get out of our silos of learning, give Ts and Ss some flexibility, blend and cross the curriculum with some awesome #PBL activities. #NVedchat
A2. In Wisconsin we also had a marvelous program to help at-risk students transition into middle school - they met each morning for a week, got to know their teachers, and addressed anything that would be a challenge for them before they started. #nvedchat
Collaborating with many on Twitter I created #FAR - Friends and Reading for the summer #BookCampPD schedule. This blog post explains the concept https://t.co/lgfXQZDYBh <-- please check it out when your schedule allows. #nvedchat
Our 3rd graders are doing something similar. Not as in depth, but they are researching a nonprofit then get to pick who to give $5,000 too. Next year, we will be changing some of this. It would be awesome if our Ss cld talk to ur seniors. #NVedchat
I've done a lot of it as part of my regular Alg I and Alg II courses fo a while now, just now it's gonna be all-day every day. I think its gonna be a blast. #nvedchat
A3 I did, in fact, completely replan 9 weeks worth of three courses one summer. I put so much time in, I was hesitant to make changes when necessary. I learned my lesson! Don't get stuck with something that isn't working just because you invested time. #NVedchat
A3: We have had many families & teachers complete the Summer A-Z Challenge. It's a great opportunity for collaboration, goal-setting, and problem-solving in real-time. It's relevant and open-ended!
https://t.co/zdsziIUaOs#NVedchat
A3: I don't think this was during summer but, I gave my Ss 2 wks to Try something they've never done before (we agree first), do it, report back to class: Food critic, nail art, photography, jailbreak iOs... This was years before I know what a genius hour was. #NVedchat
A3 Delineating between in school and not in school time seems like silo-central. Learning should be exciting, engaging, and intrinsic 365 days a year. Summer shouldn’t be the exception. It should be the rule. #nvedchat
It's a toss up, huh? I taught summer school for a long time and loved working with a smaller group of kids in a more relaxed setting but also yearned for more time physically out of the building. #nvedchat
A3: I could care less what we call it as long as they are engaging, active, learning opportunities. However, the "challenge" can motivate competitive Ss to strive to "win."
#nvedchat
A3 I don’t think I really want to require anything of myself or students except to be open to new experiences & take opportunities. For me personally this is a time I choose to read, learn new things, or attend conferences but those are also things I enjoy doing #NVedchat
We are super excited as well!! Books can open windows and having the opportunity to chat with others who are trying to also implement some of the concepts in a book is wonderful! Just reading a book is often not in depth enough. Teachers helping teachers :-) #nvedchat
Collaborating with many on Twitter I created #FAR - Friends and Reading for the summer #BookCampPD schedule. This blog post explains the concept https://t.co/lgfXQZDYBh <-- please check it out when your schedule allows. #nvedchat
a3. no a challenge is cool cause you can take it or leave it. hw is mandatory. summer is when kids can decompress and be kids with no pressure. #NVedchat
A3: I personally wrote my Master's thesis over 12 weeks/summer, earned my @edmodo certification, and read 30+ books. These are for me and make me feel accomplished. #nvedchat
You bet! We were working toward addressing the language challenges of some of our students and thought a gradual transition would be helpful. Each AM for three hours they met with kinder or ESL teachers (often both) #nvedchat
A4: With the big move on the horizon, no plans for a conference or anything, just going to try to squeeze in some reading and tinkering when I can #nvedchat
I've always struggled with summer challenges because of teaching in schools with high transiency on the student and teacher side. Working to get kids to apply and enrolled in unforgettable summer learning opportunities ended up being a much more feasible plan. #nvedchat
R4: I’m attending #ElevateDIndy in July. The marvelous @PrincipalKafele is speaking and I’m doing my own PD on a family vacation to Costa Rica next month!! #NVedchat
I miss the beach the most so I make sure to get some #California beach time when I go home. Thanks for chat tonight #NVedchat Hang in there a few more weeks
R4: Presenting on curating e-Learning Day activities at @sselearn and @eVillageNWI Should be a good time. Lots of really sharp presenters at bth gigs. #nvedchat
A4. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh conferences!! Please, please take a minute and listen to this amazing podcast with ten easy suggestions. Grab a pen and paper to write down ideas :-) https://t.co/HjTChjKQM4#nvedchat
A4 I hope to take math classes offered by our district this summer. I also look forward to learning more my #PLN and @burgessdave books I have yet to read😊 #NVEdChat
A4: Have to bypass all trainings or PD conferences this summer. If I go anywhere I will go to the SkillsUSA national competition with my NV Gold Medal winning community service team.
#nvedchat
A3: As long as your activities a suggestion and not a requirement, I’m good. I think kids should be encouraged to go to the library, to Boys and Girls Clubs, the movies, the park and be kids during the summer.
#NVedchat
A4: I will be at #iste18 Providing some PD, @learnfreckle Summit and probably a few others. Catching up on some PD books I bought during the yr. #NVedchat
A4: I'd like to finish the free Grid Method video sessions I started last week when I was sick. I'm looking for a methodology that fits our full inclusion environment. No 1 method seems to fit everyone. #NVedchat
Many thanks for the opportunity during this chat to share and talk about summer learning. I developed a website just for educators with TONS of resources at each tab. Hope you will check it out and let me know if it is helpful? https://t.co/S5pzTtgW6A#nvedchat
A4 I will be attending @NevadaACTE#CareerTechEd conference. @iste still on my wish list... but I follow along and participate online when possible #NVEdChat
Well, that was a quick 30 minutes. Thanks #NVEdChat & #MTBoS friends. Loved hearing your plans for summer, and having my thinking pushed. Have a great week, and I'll see you all next Monday.
Thanks -- the PD committee at our school is looking for ways to best benefit the whole staff when 1 or 2 Ts attend great off-campus learning. #nvedchat
I have worked at schools w/lots of transiency as well. The Summer A-Z Challenge or blogging was away for my Ss to still connect. What if you had a school hashtag and had them upload pic to IG, FB, Twitter? Then you cld use @wakelet to curate the material #NVedchat
Thanks #nvedchat! The Celtics won and I met some great, new educators to follow tonight. :) Thanks @NevadaEdChat and @Snehalstocks ! Have a great Tuesday tomorrow.
