  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Apr 30 @ 10:05 PM EDT
I love hanging out with folks and having great conversations. Sometimes you don't get time to do that during the school year, even though I try. For some reason, people open up, share, and collaborate more during the summer...weird huh? #NVedchat
  • mrrogers311 Apr 30 @ 10:05 PM EDT

A1: When I taught AP US History, I had to assign something for the summer just to have the time to cover what was required for the AP exam, kids were driven, it always got done #nvedchat

A1 I usually try to challenge my students to read at least 5 books, at least 2 that will challenge them #nvedchat
  • carr_8 Apr 30 @ 10:10 PM EDT
A1: For Ss I allow them to set their own and they can check in w/me. A few years ago Ss cod blog abt their summer or they did an A-Z book abt their summer. @ekuwah was the leader of this idea. #NVedchat
  • mrrogers311 Apr 30 @ 10:10 PM EDT
Favorite thing to do in summer is anything with my kids while also taking time to dial in some curriculum for the upcoming year. #NVedchat
  • SJteaches Apr 30 @ 10:10 PM EDT
Summer for me is about no alarm clock, binge reading, and going on random adventures w/ my family. #nvedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Apr 30 @ 10:10 PM EDT
Q2-What I did was I created a "private" G+ group using our district accounts and asked students to post pictures of anything they did during the summer. 2 months later 977 pictures got posted...only 12 by me. Then, their first project was prez of their travels #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Apr 30 @ 10:10 PM EDT
Principal 24/7. The nice thing is that you will get more done in 2 wks than you can get done in 2 semesters. That’s what i found in my admin experience. #NVedchat
    In reply to @mjjohnson1216
  • SaraHolm15 Apr 30 @ 10:10 PM EDT

A1part2: I set goals for me and get most of my goals accomplished and create new goals throughout summer vacation. #NVedchat
  • mjjohnson1216 Apr 30 @ 10:11 PM EDT
A1. Summertime was always wonderful to have conversations with teachers about their hopes and dreams - what they wanted to accomplish. If we talked long enough, we often found solutions :-) #nvedchat
  • mjjohnson1216 Apr 30 @ 10:11 PM EDT
Great to be in a chat with you! #nvedchat
    In reply to @SaraHolm15
  • letscreatemoore Apr 30 @ 10:12 PM EDT
A1 I used to make it a goal to replan an entire grading period. Too much at once! Now, I'm making it a goal to read more books, both educational and fun! #NVedchat
  • SaraHolm15 Apr 30 @ 10:12 PM EDT
That's what I was going to say -- about summer pd goals. I'm finishing up my 2nd year at this school and I want to dial in/redo/super plan the ela scope and sequence for next year to include more long term projects. #nvedchat
    In reply to @mrrogers311
  • thedullguy Apr 30 @ 10:12 PM EDT
R1: I haven't done a summer learning goal for my students. Our AP Calc teachers set up a "0 module" be completed on Canvas before school starts to get everybody up to speed. My personal summer learning goals usually involve #INeLearn conferences and reading. #nvedchat
  • CCSD_FACES Apr 30 @ 10:12 PM EDT
A1: Summer A-Z! Make it a family challenge to “hunt” down experiential learning experiences from A-Z. Push your family to find an activity for every letter of the alphabet this summer. (Examples on website) #Nvedchat https://t.co/zdsziIUaOs
    In reply to @carr_8, @ekuwah
  • SaraHolm15 Apr 30 @ 10:12 PM EDT
I really really really love the No alarm clock part! #nvedchat

I’m helping with managing technology for our district summer school. It’s virtual utilizing @CanvasLMS. We have over 1000 HS Ss participating. #NVedchat
  • mrrogers311 Apr 30 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A1: I teach AP so kiddos get a summer assignment. Some work, but also some fun stuff too. Highlight... they have to tweet a photo to me of them at 1 of the 2 NV state markers in Reno dedicated to the Civil War. #NVedchat
  • tikaee Apr 30 @ 10:13 PM EDT
Hi #nvedchat! Tika jumping in late with the hockey game on! 😊👍🏼
  • SaraHolm15 Apr 30 @ 10:13 PM EDT
oh that's awesome! Do you think the G+ group is better than a padlet or flipgrid? #nvedchat
    In reply to @Snehalstocks
  • thedullguy Apr 30 @ 10:13 PM EDT
For real. My mentor teacher preached to me the value of "non-teacher time" in the summer. #NVEdChat
    In reply to @letscreatemoore
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator Apr 30 @ 10:14 PM EDT
Q2- If summer is fun and learning should be fun, then how do we make summer learning fun for students or even ourselves? #NVedchat
  • MaggieJCox Apr 30 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A1 I always make summer goals for myself, I challenged students to try something new over the summer last year some came back & shared #Nvedchat
  • SJteaches Apr 30 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A1: I set goals for myself and read and do puzzles/projects with my kids. I'm not really one to assign summer assignments to students. #nvedchat
  • SaraHolm15 Apr 30 @ 10:14 PM EDT
Heidi, Do you do that with incoming or outgoing students? #nvedchat
    In reply to @carr_8, @ekuwah
  • RandallSampson Apr 30 @ 10:14 PM EDT
    A1: We do summer #SipAndPin #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Apr 30 @ 10:14 PM EDT
Since all of them had it and I could control or "delete" anything that was bad...it worked. Plus we used it in class. It was nice having the same students for multiple years. If you don't, then one teacher sent a message to her incoming students to do this as "bonus" #NVedchat
    In reply to @SaraHolm15
  • tikaee Apr 30 @ 10:15 PM EDT
A1 I have set summer learning goals for myself. I have set book goals and long range plans. #nvedchat
  • carr_8 Apr 30 @ 10:15 PM EDT
With outgoing students. I never knew who I was going to have in my classroom until I returned back to work in August. #nvedchat
    In reply to @SaraHolm15, @ekuwah
  • HowardKiyuna Apr 30 @ 10:15 PM EDT
A2: We do short sessions across middle school. Robotics, cardboard engineering, cooking, electronic music, blogging... #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech Apr 30 @ 10:15 PM EDT
A2: I have the choice in what I want to learn more about, how can that not be fun? I'm hoping to dive deeper into coding this summer #nvedchat
  • mjjohnson1216 Apr 30 @ 10:15 PM EDT
Collaborating with many on Twitter I created #FAR - Friends and Reading for the summer #BookCampPD schedule. This blog post explains the concept https://t.co/lgfXQZDYBh <-- please check it out when your schedule allows. #nvedchat
  • letscreatemoore Apr 30 @ 10:16 PM EDT
A2 Taking learning outdoors always helps! Can't swing it? VR is a great option! #NVedchat
  • Lee_Waterhouse Apr 30 @ 10:16 PM EDT
A2: Choice is essential, letting Ss pick books etc. they like, rather than forcing every1 to read the same thing #nvedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Apr 30 @ 10:16 PM EDT
R2: enrichment should be fun and engaging for Ss. How about a makerspace camp, learning board games, arts and crafts, coding, 3D printing, book club, etc. Learning should ALWAYS be fun! #NVedchat
  • SaraHolm15 Apr 30 @ 10:16 PM EDT
oh I love those. Thank you so much for sharing. #nvedchat
    In reply to @CCSD_FACES, @carr_8, @ekuwah
  • AndersonEdTech Apr 30 @ 10:16 PM EDT
VR is pretty great, but for me, I can only handle about 5 minutes before I start feeling sick #nvedchat
    In reply to @letscreatemoore
  • MaggieJCox Apr 30 @ 10:16 PM EDT
That sounds like mine too. My book list piles up during school year then I try to sit down & get it going #NVEdChat
    In reply to @SJteaches, @NevadaEdChat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Apr 30 @ 10:17 PM EDT
A2-All learning should be fun. Probably easier in the summer b/c technically there are "no rules" so your imagination runs wild on the learning...wait a minute should it be the same during the school year? Hmmmm! #NVedchat
  • mjjohnson1216 Apr 30 @ 10:17 PM EDT
One of my challenges is how to involve educators from the west coast = different time zone when #BookCampPD chats take place too early on a Saturday morning. Posting tweets to website is first idea https://t.co/H1wN8JmJ0g #nvedchat
  • mrrogers311 Apr 30 @ 10:17 PM EDT
A2: Stole my own thunder with A1. I do other "Selfie challenges" in summer too. Also, all of our Juniors are required to do a Service Learning Project. I try to encourage the Sophmores to get an early jump during summer. #nvedchat
  • tikaee Apr 30 @ 10:18 PM EDT
A2 I had a blast with my EL K-3 campers last summer. We practiced fluency with readers theater and singing songs. We performed for our parents at the end of the two weeks. #nvedchat
  • weberswords Apr 30 @ 10:18 PM EDT
Learned about this from a cool coworker: https://t.co/9eBZp7noyY if you dig padlet, it has some neat features. Free. Meant for retros. Immed. Thought of the ed applications. #nvedchat

A2: explore. Have fun. Make stuff. #nvedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Apr 30 @ 10:19 PM EDT
Why should there be rules for learning? I’m thinking that guard rails should be set up, but the wide open spaces between allow for a tremendous amount of fun and learning to happen. #NVedchat #SecondDixieChicksReferenceTonight
    In reply to @Snehalstocks
  • thedullguy Apr 30 @ 10:19 PM EDT
R2: I've been fortunate enough to be handed a new challenge almost every year. This year it's a re-imaged Algebra Lab for incoming freshman. No HW, all #MTBoS-inspired classroom activities. So I'll play with that this summer. #nvedchat
  • carr_8 Apr 30 @ 10:19 PM EDT
A2: We have more time to focus on what we are interested in and do not have to worry abt other tasks me may not enjoy as much. Help our Ss find tasks they are passionate abt #nvedchat
  • mjjohnson1216 Apr 30 @ 10:20 PM EDT
A2. At one school we hoped to help new kindergartners transition into being away from home and, often, a different language, by having "Jump Start to Kindergarten" - offered two weeks before school began. #nvedchat
  • ColinESeale Apr 30 @ 10:20 PM EDT
A2: I always went out of my to teach foe some part of the summer. It was a great laboratory to put new ideas into practice in a much more relaxed environment with less students. But I look back and wonder if actual time off and r&r would have been more effective #NVedchat
  • SJteaches Apr 30 @ 10:20 PM EDT
A2: I don't like to assign summer assignments because I don't know the Ss, haven't built rapport. Hard to set expectations before I know them. #nvedchat
  • MaggieJCox Apr 30 @ 10:20 PM EDT
A2 I think during summer I just give myself permission to be creative, there are fewer deadlines so we can explore #NVEdChat
  • SaraHolm15 Apr 30 @ 10:20 PM EDT
hmm. That makes sense. I set up a reading challenge for my outgoing Kinders last June and had a special lunch for those who returned it. Easy peezy and fun for everyone! #nvedchat

Q3 Time to share...have you ever completed a summer learning challenge or assigned one? Why? What makes a challenge better than homework? #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Apr 30 @ 10:21 PM EDT
LMAO! Exactly! Let's tear down the classroom walls...figuratively speaking of course... #NVedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • AndersonEdTech Apr 30 @ 10:21 PM EDT
A3: I have never done either. Does starting another master's program this summer count as a challenge? #nvedchat

A3-Sometimes it's the word, semantics, also the fact that it is a competition. Everyone loves a "good" competition that they can win at right? #NVedchat
  • SchleiderJustin Apr 30 @ 10:22 PM EDT
A2 summer is for learning that can occur outside of education. this is where we read do hobbies see the world and take what we learn from there and bring it in our classroom. I work at a summer camp so I test out new games on those kids and bring them back to school #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Apr 30 @ 10:23 PM EDT
Let’s tear them down figuratively. Get out of our silos of learning, give Ts and Ss some flexibility, blend and cross the curriculum with some awesome #PBL activities. #NVedchat
    In reply to @Snehalstocks
  • mjjohnson1216 Apr 30 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A2. In Wisconsin we also had a marvelous program to help at-risk students transition into middle school - they met each morning for a week, got to know their teachers, and addressed anything that would be a challenge for them before they started. #nvedchat
  • RandallSampson Apr 30 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A2 summer time is when we use the purple boxes for reflection and creation #NVedchat
  • SaraHolm15 Apr 30 @ 10:23 PM EDT
I'm excited to try to join some #BookCampPD #FAR this summer. A good way to pick some books to read and spend time with awesome people like @mjjohnson1216 and @AllysonApsey! #nvedchat https://t.co/SoC9lkhA9K
  • SJteaches Apr 30 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A2: also--- I think exploring hobbies, relaxation, time w/ friends/family is important and often gets neglected during the school year. #nvedchat
  • Lee_Waterhouse Apr 30 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A3 having a loose, or no time frame so I can chip away at it without feeling burdened. Has changed how I think about hw too #nvedchat

  • carr_8 Apr 30 @ 10:24 PM EDT
Our 3rd graders are doing something similar. Not as in depth, but they are researching a nonprofit then get to pick who to give $5,000 too. Next year, we will be changing some of this. It would be awesome if our Ss cld talk to ur seniors. #NVedchat

A3 I did, in fact, completely replan 9 weeks worth of three courses one summer. I put so much time in, I was hesitant to make changes when necessary. I learned my lesson! Don't get stuck with something that isn't working just because you invested time. #NVedchat
  • CCSD_FACES Apr 30 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A3: We have had many families & teachers complete the Summer A-Z Challenge. It's a great opportunity for collaboration, goal-setting, and problem-solving in real-time. It's relevant and open-ended! https://t.co/zdsziIUaOs #NVedchat
  • HowardKiyuna Apr 30 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A3: I don't think this was during summer but, I gave my Ss 2 wks to Try something they've never done before (we agree first), do it, report back to class: Food critic, nail art, photography, jailbreak iOs... This was years before I know what a genius hour was. #NVedchat
  • weberswords Apr 30 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A3 Delineating between in school and not in school time seems like silo-central. Learning should be exciting, engaging, and intrinsic 365 days a year. Summer shouldn’t be the exception. It should be the rule. #nvedchat

It's a toss up, huh? I taught summer school for a long time and loved working with a smaller group of kids in a more relaxed setting but also yearned for more time physically out of the building. #nvedchat

  • mrrogers311 Apr 30 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A3: I could care less what we call it as long as they are engaging, active, learning opportunities. However, the "challenge" can motivate competitive Ss to strive to "win." #nvedchat
  • MaggieJCox Apr 30 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A3 I don’t think I really want to require anything of myself or students except to be open to new experiences & take opportunities. For me personally this is a time I choose to read, learn new things, or attend conferences but those are also things I enjoy doing #NVedchat

A3: I personally wrote my Master's thesis over 12 weeks/summer, earned my @edmodo certification, and read 30+ books. These are for me and make me feel accomplished. #nvedchat

You bet! We were working toward addressing the language challenges of some of our students and thought a gradual transition would be helpful. Each AM for three hours they met with kinder or ESL teachers (often both) #nvedchat

A4: With the big move on the horizon, no plans for a conference or anything, just going to try to squeeze in some reading and tinkering when I can #nvedchat
  • ColinESeale Apr 30 @ 10:28 PM EDT
I've always struggled with summer challenges because of teaching in schools with high transiency on the student and teacher side. Working to get kids to apply and enrolled in unforgettable summer learning opportunities ended up being a much more feasible plan. #nvedchat
