A1: This depends on how we understand punitive. For some, restorative justice will be seen as punitive. Admitting I was wrong. That I need to change. #whatisschool
Hello Everyone at #whatisschool, Priya from Singapore, (currently joining the chat from India). Starting the day with #whatisschool , waiting for sunrise!
I'm Kevin a Teaching Principal with Irelands first and only Primary School STEAM https://t.co/UOjSFgPXeJ we wereguesrs at Microsoft s new office opening in Dublin #whatisschool

the punitive nature of discipline is in the eye of the beholder ... the kid being restricted from having "fun" anything is punitive. Heck my kids believe having your shirt tucked in is punishment. #whatisschool
A1b: This is situation dependant. Its also child specific. Quite hard to generalise with this Q but at times, discipline might be punitive. Has to be a last resort, though. Where else can you go? #whatisschool
if you offer a kid an incentive and they do not meet the goal and therefore does not receive the incentive ... that could be seen as punitive to the kid. #whatisschool
A1 in lower years, I don't practice punitive discipline instead, I process, explain and talk to the child. We have to dev a rel with our Ss to avoid misbehavior in class #whatisschool

A1) I have read and experienced in many situations that behavior problems arise because of needs like Attention, Power, Revenge,Avoidance of failure. Punishing will address only the surface level behavior but will not address the deeper needs of children #whatisschool
A1: Too often schools go straight for punitive discipline measures, forgetting that often mistakes are the perfect learning opportunity for our young people #whatisschool
True. Do you think Ss should be held "accountable" for their choices? #whatisschool If a child chooses to absolutely not work during work time, for example?

I can say "I'm going to take my shoe off an beat you" to one kid and scare them while to another i will get a response of "Mr Dill you are so crazy ... you sound just like my Mom" #whatisschool knowing your kids matter.
A1.Our pupils forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them.A kind word can last a lifetime #whatisschool
A1) I stopped using the words discipline & punishment a long time ago... they are choices. Sometimes good, sometimes bad... can learn from each one & move on #whatisschool
their grade is their accountability, but then there is usually reason why they don't do the work ... sometimes the assignment sucks and that is my fault. #whatisschool
I agree with this so much. I have told my former Principal, @WASEMJEFF, so many times... they won't remember the maths problems, but they will remember how they FELT when we were together! #whatisschool

A2 talking to the kid like a real person helps ... recognize that your class is not the most important thing happening in the kid's life ... relationship matters. #whatisschool
their grade is their accountability, but then there is usually reason why they don't do the work ... sometimes the assignment sucks and that is my fault. #whatisschool
too often, educators get focused on content and test scores and we forget we teach kids ... they are not adults ... they do silly things ... not because they're bad, but because they are kids ... #whatisschool
What happens when a teacher has tried this and many other strategies and it still just won't work? The child continues to refuse to work at all. #whatisschool
A1 #whatisschool I met a lad today who was being punished by not going out to play. He had the offer of having a friend stay in with him. He told his teacher he doesnât have any friends đ
the door never closes on mastering the content ... sometimes they need a moment to reflect ... i get the "Can I fix this assignment?" and the answer is usually yes #whatisschool

Q3: According to Solution Tree, âwonât doâ kids require much support from Administrators. How can the Administration in your building support you? #whatisschool

Hi Faige from Los Angeles. I subbed 1/2 day in grade2 When I left I young boy who had a difficult day (heâd been absent for a week with a cold) came over and hugged me goodbye. It was so sweet. #whatisschool
Maybe some things can't be fixed in the time span of one school year. I have some Ss this year that it often seems no matter what I do they simply aren't happy and simply will not work hard on anything... even when they get to choose the work. #whatisschool
Those who have not talked to me I approach with a "What's up with this grade? ... there is no way this is the best you can do ... what can we do to fix this?" #whatisschool
Late entry to today's #whatisschool ... A3: Support the notion of trying something. It might not work, but ppl who have a go with the Won't Do kids might eventually crack them. Be involved in the conversation.
A3: Talk to the Ss. Find their interest. What has their eyes light up? A personal connection makes a big difference. To know them as a person #whatisschool
And sometimes they smugly come back to our class without any notion of apology or steps to reconcile with the teacher. Admin fixes the problem. #whatisschool
It should be noted, I have a strange relationship with my kids ... i question some about eating habits ... many scold me about being all up in their business ... then tell me their business. #whatisschool
Q4) In this age where most children are on screens for hours per day, how do we teach students to cope with boredom and persevere through tasks they may not enjoy? #whatisschool
Q4 In this age where most children are on screens for hours per day, how do we teach students to cope with boredom and persevere through tasks they may not enjoy? #whatisschool@mrkempnz
Absolutely! I like to think of the value I add to a class/student. Do they leave the room each day knowing a little bit more? Feeling a bit better? Having engaged with the topic? Then, I'm ok. Whether or not they get 90+ isn't what it's all about #whatisschool
A4: I think we need to let them cope. We are forever edutaining them. Why? Lifeâs not like that for me. Boredom can spark innovation and creativity. Spontaneity. Resolve. #whatisschool
A4: Engagement and student voice is key. Actively involve students in decision making and give them ownership of their learning - actively teaching perseverance skills are critical - we can't just expect it to happen #whatisschool
A4 I have often talked with kids I teach, what they mean by boredom and why theyâre bored. The answers vary and most are not bored in ways their parents often share with us. #whatisschool
Perhaps smug is not the right wordâŚand its not happened to me. But you know when the student thinks theyâve won a game we are not even playing! #whatisschool
A4: Devices in moderation but fueling passions can come in many forms - devices, books, creating games, journaling, tinkering, having a conversation, working on a service project, and on and on. #whatisschool@tobiemichele
A4: ask them to solve a problem, create an ideal situation/world, find alternate ways to do mundane tasks. Ts need to find outlets for Ss to express themselves BUT Ss need coping skills as well and should not need entertainment from Ts #whatisschool
A4: Connect them globally to engage them ..... Here are my top 5 ways for engaging students in a global conversation https://t.co/GKPjpANH82#whatisschool
Q4) In this age where most children are on screens for hours per day, how do we teach students to cope with boredom and persevere through tasks they may not enjoy? #whatisschool
What about those kiddos that even when they are given all kinds of voice and choice STILL don't want to work on anything and flat out tell you they don't care? I've got some tough cookies this year! #whatisschool

A4) let them be child, imagine explore and use things around them in a different way than the intended purpose . Reduce structured activities.
Child or adult , we need to sit in boredom for sometime in order to understand who we are.
#whatisschool
Agreed to? They have been put in place. I think many people believe people will absorb information. But when they are kept out of the loop, the process is misunderstood. #whatisschool
A4: Using real world examples are important. Teaching students how skills like perseverance and tolerance are important in the real world #whatisschool
A4 creating a classroom of risk takers that are facilitated to rise up to new challenges, lead by an enthusiastic mistakes making teacher that loves to teach #whatisschool#alwayskindergartnerer

A4 Yesterday in 1st grade the kids were so excited to explore #makerspace Giving them time to explore who they are as learners. Itâs not the same for all but âtryingâ is something I encourage and support #whatisschool
A4) Simple really, show an interest in them, always felt kids gravitate towards those devices because others didnât interact w/them Tell them a story, a joke, give a hug, play thumb war or card game, theyâll love ya for it #whatisschool
A4: Using real world examples are important. Teaching students how skills like perseverance and tolerance are important in the real world #whatisschool
Q5: As more parenting styles have changed to include negotiating with children (i.e. bargaining over food choices), has this posed a challenge in the classroom? #whatisschool
Q4) In this age where most children are on screens for hours per day, how do we teach students to cope with boredom and persevere through tasks they may not enjoy? #whatisschool
I think going with talking over what happened & why the target wasn't reached, highlighting what did get achieved & then maybe agreeing on a diff reward based on what was done, helps temper that. #whatisschool
A5: Yes - students often expect things to always go there way. Negotiating becomes an engrained expectation and way of life, making perseverance and dealing with large scale change harder to manage #whatisschool
And for goodness sake, we mustn't just give the incentive regardless of effort. Ss see the 2-sided and absorb that. "Why bother- it's a joke." #whatisschool
A5: Absolutely. I call out the âlawyersâ more than the S who does the wrong thing. You talk to a student about behaviour and two or threw lawyers start arguing with you! #whatisschool
A5 Negotiating part of kids figuring out how far they can push that envelope. Ts decide what works best in their classroom. Sometimes saying no wiggle room and at times flexibility goes a long way in working through their understanding #whatisschool
A5) Life & relationships are all about compromising, negotiation is a form of it, Donât we want Ss to make good choices, how do you teach that if we are always deciding for them? #whatisschool
A5: Absolutely. I call out the âlawyersâ more than the S who does the wrong thing. You talk to a student about behaviour and two or threw lawyers start arguing with you! #whatisschool
A5: yes! Students are all about the immediate result and have difficultly taking part in anything that doesn't provide something instant. #whatisschool
A5: We need to be careful, though. We want our students to be a critical thinkers and question information. At times, they will question us. Iâm okay with that. #whatisschool
A5 #whatisschool It is essential that if they take part in negotiations there are wins for them at times. It is a great skill to learn but they have to be taught how to manage if it doesnât work
A5: yes! Students are all about the immediate result and have difficultly taking part in anything that doesn't provide something instant. #whatisschool
A6: Depends. Some Ss eat into their classroom time because they havenât finished cleaning up. Is that punishment, or learning? Clean quicker and youâll be fine! #whatisschool
A6: It depends on the challenges being experienced and what is done during the recess time. If it is not related to the behavior then it has no relevance for learning to change #whatisschool
So sorry I have to run. Subbing and fighting colds leave me little time for house needs. Have a great week end and thanks for the conversation #whatisschool
I want push back within the content! Ss that "argue" back respectfully about the content are ENGAGED Ss! The push back on simple instructions for procedures is frustrating and a waste of everyone's energy. #whatisschool

i have a hard time buying into the "here's your reward for doing what you are supposed to do" are they valuing the learning or the reward. #whatisschool

A6 Work the body to clear the heart & mind. @Playworks has an amazing recess program that supports soc/emo development & that's much of what puts recess at risk. #whatisschool
Of course & absolutely in matters of safety, However, Iâve seen many Ts & Admin make their own âsillyâ rules âI like my classroom super cold, deal with itâ That attitude is then modeled by Ss & Ss are labeled negatively You get what u give #whatisschool
We need to work w/ Ss to help them be their best selves. Sometimes thatâs hard and involves discipline but it needs to be administered properly and fairly #whatisschool
I experienced this when I taught grade 6 and all of the "bad kids" were constantly earning rewards and the kids that just always do what they are supposed to do missed out on extra activities. #whatisschool

That's an opportunity to discuss individual growth & development. And challenging & encouraging that middle appropriately is critical. But tough b/c of resources. If you have adult volunteers, they can help as Ts focus elsewhere. #whatisschool
