Good morning! I'm Brian. I teach MS students English in CO. I'm seeing chat worlds collide with #edugladiators talking about student-teachers & #nt2t welcoming a bunch of aspiring student-teachers from Austin Peay. (To a degree, aren't we all student-teachers in this profession?)
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana Univ. Have had student Ts in past & some field experience Ss in my online setting. #EduGladiators
Good morning everyone! Elaine IC from NJ taking a break from my studies to join the discussion. I just passed my 3rd class super excited and ready for number 4!! #EduGladiators

Good morning. I am Dan, joining in from Wisconsin. I teach 4 different science courses at the high school level. I am constantly trying to find fun, new things to help my students understand concepts they cannot see. #EduGladiators
A1: I had a unique experience going to school for speech therapy first. I would say not enough hands on field experience as an undergrad and grad. #EduGladiators
A1 The lower divisions at my school pair associate Ts with experienced classroom Ts. I wish the middle and upper divisions did the same—everyone wins. #EduGladiators
A1: My time as a student teacher was blessed with both good and bad mentors. I appreciate examples of what not to be as much or maybe more as what to be. I think teacher training programs need to expose Student teachers to more mentorships with dif teachers #edugladiators
A1 There are a lot of resources available, whether through Twitter or by joining @iste and #isteten to help prepare future educators, my advice is to build PLN #EduGladiators
A1: potentially difficult but the more that interns and student teachers are able to have meaningful hands-on experiences the better. The more "time behind the seat" we can offer new teachers the better #edugladiators
A1) Honestly, there is only so much experience that you can gain by watching. I always have our interns jump right end and treat them as members of our faculty. #edugladiators
A1: potentially difficult but the more that interns and student teachers are able to have meaningful hands-on experiences the better. The more "time in the seat" we can offer new teachers the better #edugladiators
A1. Currently have a field student. Don’t be afraid to try something, you are there to learn. Just reflect on what happened and make adjustments for next time. Try to think like your students. Would you want to be in your class? #EduGladiators
A1: I went through an alternative certification program, @NYCTF, and was thankful to be paired with two strong and thoughtful teachers that helped me greatly during summer school teaching (and after!). #EduGladiators
A1 We don't have student teaching programs in this country, so we support new Ts by giving them one-on-one coaching, gradually releasing them to teach on their own. #edugladiators
A1: my most recent and best experiences have been those that are approached as a co-teaching experience. Using my Do, Reflect, Do Better mantra as our guide we embark on the journey together from the planning to the teaching to the reflecting #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators A1 I have had the privilege of having student teachers, pedagogy students and mentees. It can be tough helping them find what works for them and NOT telling them what works for you. Give them ideas and let them run with them.
A1: I don't have a lot of experience with STs; only had one who didn't last b/c his family was pushing him in to teaching. However, I think apprenticeship - long term- programs would be best preparation for teaching #EduGladiators
A1 The lower divisions at my school pair associate Ts with experienced classroom Ts. I wish the middle and upper divisions did the same—everyone wins. #EduGladiators
Good morning Gladiators! Sorry late to the game preparing for our #supercross weekend in STL!! Colleen, STL,MO, midlevel modern language #EduGladiators
A1: Inconsistency is my experience. I believe a great school cultivates teacher leaders to embrace new teachers like new family members and support then over multiple years.
Too often it’s one year and done. New teachers need consistent support over time. #edugladiators
A1) I teach world history & there's usually a lot of discomfort for student teachers who have to tackle that subject. I remember feeling that way myself. :) #EduGladiators
A1: The best student teaching programs pair prospective teachers with veterans in the school they will eventually teach in. The biggest challenge new teachers face is becoming a part of a new community of students and teachers. This makes the transition smooth #edugladiators
#EduGladiators Is there anything I can do to help the Teacher activist community read your work, Laura? Can you send me a copy to give to my president? We need to bridge the research-practice divide.
I believe it’s time to elevate the profession. Educators must raise their voices. So I’m going first. No longer can the voices of practitioners be absent from policy. Order the book on Amazon: https://t.co/BodQc4FTqt#call2action4ed#teachers#education
A1: We have started interviewing our student Ts. We want quality. Looking for positive attitude growth mindset. Someone who could potentially be a hire for our district. #edugladiators
A1 I had a great learning experience through my student teachers. I learned how to delegate and motivate. I also learned to have patience and to explain the reasons why things work or don’t work. STs need to experience the realness of teaching. All of it. #EduGladiators
A1. In police training unit, we take on new trainers frequently. Even though they want to do the sexy stuff, they handle admin/logistical tasks first. If they can't handle that, they aren't cut out for the rest. #EduGladiators

A1. While I never hosted a student teacher during my years as a classroom teacher, I always continually offer support to student teachers in all capacities. Be real, be honest. Would you want to learn as an aspiring educator in your learning space? #EduGladiators
A1~ fortunate to mentor 2 student interns this year & starting on day 1 we set expectations , clear vision on both sides and most importantly stressed the imp of their role in shaping the ❤️s a& minds of the 2nd graders we educate 🍎#EduGladiators
A1. I feel student teachers should not be confined to 1 class. They need to see honors classes as well as the most challenging classes. If possible they need to be exposed to the diversity of Ss in a dist. #EduGladiators
A1: My #sped intern experiences were all over the place-from a terrible inclusion experience (T talked bad about the Ss) to following a scripted reading program at one school. #EduGladiators
A1: I have also been a coach for beginning teachers in alternative certification programs. New teachers need consistent coaching, reassurance, & support to try new things, ask questions, and take risks. They also need help planning, resources, and an ear to listen! #EduGladiators
Yes! Seeing more Univ having STs spend an entire year (1 sem with the Observation & 1 Sem Interning). Really seems to work well with getting the full experience. Wonder if folks fear of a “bad egg” makes them resist this? #EduGladiators
A1: potentially difficult but the more that interns and student teachers are able to have meaningful hands-on experiences the better. The more "time in the seat" we can offer new teachers the better #edugladiators
#edugladiators My advice to up and coming #teachers is to avoid negativity and take good care of yourself, so you can take care of your #students. Most of the negative people I know are no longer #teaching, which is probably for the best.
A1: I’ve had two student teachers. I look at it as a way for me to verbalize each decision I make, which really helped me a lot always referring back to #whyIteach in order to help them. Student relationships is always the #1 thing I stressed with them! #edugladiators
Good point, they need to observe other areas, teaching methods and interactions, I have had some observations done by interns in my class #edugladiators
RT @MsCommins108: #edugladiators My advice to up and coming #teachers is to avoid negativity and take good care of yourself, so you can take care of your #students. Most of the negative people I know are no longer #teaching, which is probably for the best.
Same here I had good and bad, so even thought I would walk in they would have not have to do a thing. Others guided me. Both gave me a great learning opportunity. #EduGladiators
We can learn so much can't we? I have never had a student teacher, but have had to remind myself as the now veteran teacher (yikes!) to be kind, patient, etc. I have a new role as the experienced one. #EduGladiators
A2 By involving them in each part of the day, introducing them to colleagues, being avail to support and help them create their own connections, #EduGladiators
A1 seems that it would make more sense to have an apprenticeship model. Biggest challenge in classroom is setting up the structures for the year. Having a 6-8 week internship in the middle of the year doesn't help with that #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators A1 I have had the privilege of having student teachers, pedagogy students and mentees. It can be tough helping them find what works for them and NOT telling them what works for you. Give them ideas and let them run with them.
I’m with Vic. Student Ts should not be assigned to one T, but to a department or grade level team. Get the person exposed to different methodologies and philosophies. #EduGladiators
A2: Include them in everything...I took mine to our Teacher Voice Group meetings, PLCs, ARCs w parent permission...ask for opinions and involve them in the planning process. It’s almost as if you’re two people working as one, we have to let them see it all! #edugladiators
A2: I always appreciated being treated as part of the team (thinking about admin internship) and being able to independently try things out. #EduGladiators
That is absolutely possible. Schools also seem hesitant to give up too much time to STs given the nature of many states accountability systems and a general sense of fear that brings #EduGladiators
A2. Ensure student teachers are part of the conversation. Invite them to your PLCs, grade level/content meetings, include in parent conversations when applicable and expose to as many authentic opportunities to grow as an aspiring educator as possible. #EduGladiators
A2a. First off, bring your own #motivation. If we need to kick you in the ass as a *new* member of our community, we'll be doing that for the rest of your short-lived career! #EduGladiators

A2: The first step is to ensure that they feel integrated in the classroom. They need to build relationship with students. Introduce them to some of your most extroverted students so they feel like they are a part of your classroom community. #edugladiators
While I've noticed much being made lately of the 'innovator's mindset,' Noa's comment has me musing about the beginner's mindset -- an important, sensitive, foundational period that establishes launchpad for later success & creativity. #edugladiators
A1: I don't have a lot of experience with STs; only had one who didn't last b/c his family was pushing him in to teaching. However, I think apprenticeship - long term- programs would be best preparation for teaching #EduGladiators
A2: I give them ownership and support. With that ownership comes the responsibility of reflection, not perfection. I just want them to chase better. I model my own imperfections and how I use reflection to chase my own better. #EduGladiators
A2: Include them in the conversations. Just like students they need to own their learning. University only prepares us for so much. It is nice to feel a member of a team but I knew I was a junior member haha Student teachers need to remember the student part #edugladiators
#edugladiators A2 I think we can also include substitute #teachers in some of this. A #thankyou goes pretty far, but there is nothing better than listening to someone else's ideas.
Join me tomorrow morning at 8:30am EST as I guest moderate a #HackLearning chat. We'll be discussing The Guide on the Ride and how educators can make the transition from a teacher-centered classroom to a learner-centered one. #edchat#satchat#NT2t#edugladiators
I can see how Co- teaching could be beneficial. As a newer teacher I love being able to co-teach & learn from others. Some of my best PD has come from visiting other classrooms & having Ts visit mine. #EduGladiators
I keep wondering how the high stakes testing environment affects placements for student teachers. Does it make it harder to find placements for interns? #EduGladiators
A1: For #studentteachers it's important to have them involved in the action. Find spaces for them to take on purposeful roles, and know their interests. They need to learn to build their most authentic self in the #classroom, and that starts with our #leadership. #EduGladiators
A1: I’m still friends with and have ongoing conversations with the my cooperating teacher from when I student taught more than 10 years ago! She and her husband are still folks I look up to. #RelationshipsMatter#EduGladiators
I agree with student relationships. But one thing I learned is that you have to show them and explained what that means. I had one who was very inappropriate and I had to pull her aside and tell her that we do not talk about EVERYTHING with the kids. #EduGladiators
A2: Open my classroom to their ideas. Allow them to take the lead and use me as an evaluator and cheerleader. Take time to share my best practices. And be real without being jaded. Education is HARD, but being honest about the good and bad helps set expectations. #edugladiators
W2: Include them! They are part of the team! We give them staff T-shirt, include them on emails. The grade level/content area teams also do a great job including them during meetings. No matter your level you have a contribution to the team! Share your ideas. #edugladiators
A2: Include them in everything...I took mine to our Teacher Voice Group meetings, PLCs, ARCs w parent permission...ask for opinions and involve them in the planning process. It’s almost as if you’re two people working as one, we have to let them see it all! #edugladiators
A2: build a relationship with them and give them an opportunity to be a valuable member of your school culture. They have a new perspective and need to know that while they are learning from us, we are very much learning from them #edugladiators
Truth! Was so fortunate to have done my student teaching in the fall from start of year. Ended up getting hired at the same school so knew the procedures which was amazingly helpful. #EduGladiators
A2) in the organizations we let them know that their voice is essential, we learn from them as much we they learn from us. Also make sure pre-service have time to spend together to brainstorm and reflect #EduGladiators
A1: 1st thing we should NOT do is adopt attitude having a Student Ts is more work for us. They will pick up on that & could start doubting their skills/choice. ❤️ influx of new energy & ideas they bring. Nothing wrong being reminded of the passion we had then. #EduGladiators
A2: For new teachers (and all teachers, really!), let them know you see their hard work & awesome things they're doing. Leave them a note w/ a sticker or treat, shout them out in a meeting or e-mail, or use them as an example in PD! #edugladiators
I keep wondering how the high stakes testing environment affects placements for student teachers. Does it make it harder to find placements for interns? #EduGladiators
A2. I encourage their ideas and let them lead the planning process. Run with them but be energetic and passionate while doing them. I offer up my stuff and say do anything you want to it (even scrap it). It gives them ownership. On occasion I ask for their ideas. #EduGladiators
A2 I included them in everything. From decision making to lunch. I think that’s a helpful transition and it allows for them to learn the culture and the norms of the building. #EduGladiators
A2~ foster trust, Empwer them to share ideas, discuss takeaways ~ good, bumps & recovery from such 😊. Model mutual respect from all stakeholders. Praise. Support. Encouragement #EduGladiators
We can’t wait until their last semester to have them “try” teaching. Preservice needs to start much earlier and show them all the parts- too many are overwhelmed when they get their own room #EduGladiators
A2: I also create space and opportunity for mistakes so growth follows. I want them to embrace mistakes. It’s that embrace that has kept me sane all these years. I am always looking forward to my next mistake. I think that creates an important mindset for them. #EduGladiators
I teach an elective Modern Language, in elective courses unless they are staples like band, choir, art, we do not have preservice teachers placed with us. #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators Treat them like a normal teacher. Have same expectations and supports that you would offer a 1st year T. Set up ALL T to succeed, grow and positively influence kids, year after year. #chooseyourculture
A2b. We need to demonstrate/explain how even the smallest, seemingly meaningless tasks are necessary to the overall success of our mission. New people need to "pay their dues" without feeling (too) marginalized. 😉 #EduGladiators
Exactly and after all these years the people making the biggest bucks are the influencers when without teachers and education, we all would be nothing. #EduGladiators But perhaps I'm confused.
Exactly. Stop blaming teachers for everything that's wrong in education, most of which is due to power structures over which teachers have no influence. #EduGladiators
A3: I think about Rick DuFour's In Praise of American Educators. What people see and hear may be negative, but there are so many positives! We have to be louder than the negative. #EduGladiators
A3: We need universities giving them accurate and realistic opportunities for them to see what teaching is really like and get them in the classrooms as early as possible. As a school, we open our doors for students interested to come and observe! #edugladiators
A2. By assigning a mentor or a “go to person” on campus. As an AP I try share my experiences as a student teacher to let them know I understand. Also I check on them regularly (I don’t stalk them though) #edugladiators
A3. We can’t control how gov/media portray the profession so we have to sing its praises. Show people it’s about the Ss using the students’ perspectives. Don’t discourage Ss who want to be teachers. #edugladiators
While I mostly agree, I've also seen situations where basics are unnecessary gatekeepers, digging the bit into mouth of a horse that's chomping. Letting proverbial horse run, learn from experience, realize need to backtrack to basics can create fruitful urgency. #edugladiators
A3: By telling and posting all the positive things happening in our spaces every day. When you #TellYourStory, you can celebrate your school and community's learning journey. #EduGladiators
A3: We need to rethink how we support teachers. We need to coach rather than evaluate. We need to personalize PD. People will be more interested in teaching if they know they will get the help they need to grow and be successful! Leaders need to step up their game! #edugladiators
#edugladiators A3Most of the very well-qualified people I know who are staying away from #teaching blame it on the amount of #testing; they feel as though the love of #learning has disappeared.
A3: Oh man, this is WAY more complicated a question than Twitter can handle. Too many Ss are seeing school as a standardized test farm for filling content silos rather than a learning experience of discovery. Hard sell without serious education reform. #edugladiators
A3 (besides the pay!) this is cheesy- but we need to set promote the awesomeness of being a T. Too many are “Eeyores” about being a T and it doesn’t look appealing. A lot of work- but we need to show the joy! #imapollyanna#EduGladiators
It’s a shared and gradual release of responsibility. It’s so important for them to feel like it’s “us” and not “them.” If we just simply let them loose, we miss a real opportunity for growth—for both of us. #EduGladiators
A3: My wife and I thought about taking a year to teach in the United States. I was shocked with the difference in pay. I make more as a teacher in Canada than Principals in many states. #EduGladiators
A1: My experience w/ student teachers (3 from two universities) exposed some glaring areas for growth: coaching/support and consistency.
Begin. teachers (incl. STs) need support, coaching, mentoring, modeling THROUGHOUT the year... not just in an 8-week stint. #edugladiators
A3 Being a teacher is a passion. It is also hard work. When Ts complain about the work part more than we accentuate the passion part, it discourages young people from choosing this great life’s path. #edugladiators
A3: potential Ts need to find their "WHY". They also need to have an open and honest dialogue about what the profession is. If money is a young person's motivation, obviously this isn't for them; if they have their "WHY" then their drive will correlate #edugladiators
I’ve found that the reason @websteru Edu Grads get sought out in STL is because of this very reason. They are placed in classrooms often - much more like the revolving internships I’m experiencing for my own Grad studies in Ed Leadership. Makes so much sense #EduGladiators
A3: We need universities giving them accurate and realistic opportunities for them to see what teaching is really like and get them in the classrooms as early as possible. As a school, we open our doors for students interested to come and observe! #edugladiators
A2: Have them share their ideas in the PLC and dept meetings. Include them early on in class. Recognize their ideas and contributions to your Ss by saying something like, “That’s a great idea or method.” #EduGladiators
Today’s topic is so in line with my new book! The voices of educators must be raised in advocacy to elevate the profession. I’ve got ideas so I’m going first. Order the book on Amazon: https://t.co/BodQc4FTqt#call2action4ed#EduGladiators
A3. Our profession is amazing. How might we tell that story to entice HS sts., parents, and other community leaders who would make great teachers. #EduGladiators
A3: We have to be extra positive about the awesome work we do. We have to spread the word that teaching is a noble profession. #positivity#edugladiators
A3) sorry for the lol response but that is a complicated question. Is it more money? More support? Less fear of the unknown? Ability to “teach”? #EduGladiators
A3: 1:change the narrative quit telling people how bad teaching is. 2. Start advocating for ourselves as teachers finding better data try @Eukolos_Easy 3. We must give millennials a chance to shine. Millennials don't want more money, they want their ideas heard! #edugladiators
A3: College grads need to feel like the teaching industry is as competitive as law, business and medicine. Starting salaries are not the issue but growth opportunities are! Top graduates need to know they can flourish in our industry and get respect for their work #edugladiators
A3) Have administrators go and speak to prospective teachers. If they see our passion as leaders they may decide to join us in serving in the classroom. #edugladiators
A2: Motivation/value come from feeling purposeful in the lives of students. We must encourage them to build authentic relationships, model how to meaningfully #engage students, & support them in creating moments that spark student excitement around learning #EduGladiators
A3: I think the society needs to start valuing teachers as well. Like here you have to be a certified 4 years educated in a University accredited teacher even to sub. My friend in Utah can sub with nothing more than a HS diploma... #edugladiators Hard to demand more in that case
Just before this chat started, I was creating a spreadsheet comparing COLI to $ spent per pupil in OK and surrounding states. No matter how good folks are, an extra $1,500+ per kid can make some amazing opportunities #EduGladiators
A3, Continue to tell our school’s story! #edugladiators WE GET TO COME TO SCHOOL EVERYDAY! We’re not in cubicles...we are an energized team that cares about colleagues & S social, emotional, and academic learning. We are in the business of RELATIONSHIPS!
A3. School stakeholders must effectively tell their stories ongoing. Additionally, its vital districts and universities bond partnerships in various capacities to expose potential educators to the field early through partnership programs. https://t.co/gMKQx87WJy#EduGladiators
A1.The way they learn must reflect how they need to teach & lead students. Best feedback I've received from a field student is thanking me for pushing her to reflect on her identity in this work with kids who don't look like her, things not often taught in school. #EduGladiators

A3 We can advocate for less standardized testing, more equitable funding, and better pay. In the meantime, we can continue to tell our own stories to counteract the dominant narratives of teaching. And we can help teachers AND students make their work meaningful. #EduGladiators
A3: I advocate for it all the time in my high school classroom. Sometimes directly, encouraging kids to consider teaching. All the time indirectly, with my enthusiasm and passion for what I do. I love my job and I say it and live it every day. #EduGladiators
A3: If we want to encourage kids to enter this profession, we MUST change the narrative so people see Ts as viable option that earns a good wage, well respected & valued! No more “...Ts don’t do it for the 💵”. We all have to eat! #EduGladiators
A3~ take every opp to talk loud&proud about our profession whenever/whoever/wherever will listen ~ do so kindly and always show your passion for this #noble profession... say yes to welcoming student interns 😊 you'll be glad you did !
A2: I introduce myself to as many student teachers as possible in the building and offer support or invite them to observe (even if ELA is not their content area). I also invite them to events like school dances to help them feel part of the building #EduGladiators
A3. The demeaning narrative surrounding public education must end. Expertise in education isn’t widespread, contrary to popular belief. The voices of practitioners must be honored to bridge the gap between policy, research, and practice! #call2action4ed#EduGladiators
A3 (cont.): I have a number of CTE students focused on becoming teachers who come to my class to talk education reform and what they can do as future teachers to change the paradigm. I show them the wrong and challenge them to find solutions. #edugladiators
Cant help but see how #EduGladiators topic today is so similar to police train-the-trainer programs. 1 thing to teach "end users;" completely diff mentoring new Ts.
A3. It starts in grade school we have to introduce/encourage our students to become teachers. This is especially true for minority’s. I usually see 0 AA males in the HS “ready set teach” program. Hisp. Ss as well #edugladiators
Q? Also- making sure Ts of Student Ts are. Or too far removed from the field. Make the picture painted, the info shared: relevant, appropriate, and guiding for people new to the field. Just like our Ss- college learning for Ts must be authentic and accurate #edugladiators
A2: To make ST feel valued, you must truly know them - and being speaking their language of appreciation/love. Share insights, speak affirmations, bring tokens of appreciation, speak kindly of them to others, ask peers to reach out, give your time, [forever] ETC.
#edugladiators
A3: When I was working in the States, you rarely heard good things said about Ts in the news. Ts got blamed for everything. I got more support from ppl in the community. #EduGladiators
A3. We make student teachers pay to be teachers. Maybe a different approach. Even unpaid interns don’t pay to be unpaid interns. Why should student teachers? #edugladiators
A4 I would definitely get a copy of #tlap for the first book, also Courageous Edventures by @MsMagiera and copies of the #edumatch Snapshot in education books :) #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators A3 Elevate the profession! @latoyadixon5 Let’s change the narrative and restore divinity and respect to the profession, ppl will follow!
Yes! At @websteru I placed in a school during my first foundations of education course and we in a school every semester till graduation. #EduGladiators
A4: Teach Like a Pirate!!! Teach Like a Pirate!!! Teach Like a Pirate!!! Teach Like a Pirate!!! Teach Like a Pirate!!! Teach Like a Pirate!!! Teach Like a Pirate!!! Did I mention Teach Like a Pirate?? #tlap#edugladiators
A3: my state has been hiring and to date has 1900+ emergency certified ppl. Last in edu bc While we are in sanely pleased emergency certifications are stepping up to the plate, there’s no thought of pedagogy when you’re a warm body. :-( #edugladiators#Oklaed
A3) As current educators we must talk positive about field, recruit and plant that bug into kids while they are in HS...I work to plant that seed w/ our peer tutors.#EduGladiators
I think it could be amazing, but most would balk if income were lost. Still, a study that looks at the cost of the training lost when Ts quit in early years might show the benefit of the floating mentor #EduGladiators
A4: "I'd Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had: My Year as a Rookie Teacher at Northeast High" by Tony Danza really captures what it's like to be a first year teacher. #edugladiators
A3: College grads need to feel like the teaching industry is as competitive as law, business and medicine. Starting salaries are not the issue but growth opportunities are! Top graduates need to know they can flourish in our industry and get respect for their work #edugladiators
A2: We all feel valued when our option is respected & we are asked to take part in the process. Student Ts should be not only included but given opportunity to contribute in daily planning, duties, etc of the school day. #EduGladiators
Ask perspective college students who inspired them to be life-long learners?
Then ask them would they like to inspire others to do the same?
#edugladiators
With #EduGladiators like each of you in this morning's chat, a student teacher would be lucky to learn from you! Big thanks to @STLinOK for guiding us through such an important topic!
A3. Re-thinking How we"re supporting, inducting, mentoring, coaching those entering the field..High number of those who enter and leave within first few years #EduGladiators
Here is how I approach teaching my college kids who are just entering the ed program in my classroom management course at the university. This is one of the feedback sheets from the end of the quarter. #EduGladiators
A4: I read Teacher Man by Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes) prior to my student teaching; gave a very down to earth, humanized view of what teachers and students could be as opposed to the more clinical view I had seen as an undergrad #EduGladiators
A3. Educators must abandon the “we’ll just close our doors and teach our kids” mindset. We need a voice at the policy table &the research table. We need a voice at the ed prep program table. We need a voice at the accountability table. #EduGladiators#call2action4ed
A3b: I have a daughter in college who wants to be an elementary music teacher. I want the best for her experiences and I want her to be happy in life! Kindergarteners and music make her happy! #edugladiators
A4: For an ELA teacher, I’d order @beritgordon’s NO MORE FAKE READING to inspire classroom reading practices. This isn’t a motivation book so much as a valuable resource to encourage best practice #EduGladiators
A4 Had to pop in to respond to this q. I would recommend Creating Opportunity to Learn by @PedroANoguera or Multiplication is for White People. Necessary texts for all educators that pushes mindset on how to foster equity in classroom for all Ss! #EduGladiators

A4: First year teachers also need a copy of #ForWhiteFolks by @chrisemdin. We can all learn from this book, and remember we need to connect with our students, get to know them, and give them voice/ownership in the classroom. #edugladiators
A1: From day 1, we start team teaching. Depending on the ability of the student, my role gradually becomes less as she assumes the role of lead. It is critical to facilitate their journey, teach them to reflect, and help them discover their style. @edugladiators#edugladiators

A4: I would gift them Gung Ho! by Blanchard & Bowles. It's not an educational narrative but it demonstrates the power of culture--created in a classroom, school, or district = worthwhile work, straightforward goals, & cheering each other on. #edugladiators@kenblanchard
Amen!! We must change our teacher prep programs from the way they currently are serving prospective teachers! @floressaem can we please do this ASAP?? #edugladiators
A3. Re-thinking How we"re supporting, inducting, mentoring, coaching those entering the field..High number of those who enter and leave within first few years #EduGladiators
That’s not good. Worked with several Ts who in that situation. They had the heart but weren’t ready for the demands in #Sped. They lacked the training. #EduGladiators
A3. I believe shifting the narrative around public education will have a profound effect on recruitment, retention, AND student outcomes...and that shift starts with us...THE EDUCATORS. It’s all in my new book! #call2action4ed#EduGladiators

My mentor @mrsmcfadd did a great job of this. Gave both support and a push when needed. She made me feel like was a part of the classroom from day one by introducing me to the staff & having a space for me in her classroom. #edugladiators

A4: Great books are being recommended. Schools should have a professional library for new teachers & passionate readers who want to learn to teach better, lead better, & grow faster. #edugladiators#readthisseries#bookstudy
A4. Essentials
Dr. Chris Emdin's 'For White Folks who Teach in the Hood and the Rest of Y'all Too'
Paulo Freire's 'Pedagogy of the Oppressed'
#edugladiators
That’s awesome. So many of my college kids don’t get this from their experiences. It is more than just making our classrooms available. We have the opportunity and responsibility to create a reciprocal learning experience. Wish more master teachers saw it this way. #EduGladiators

A1- University’s need to step up their game. Pedagogy is pretty far back sometimes 5-10 years. More emphasis on the intern part and less on seat team on campus. #EduGladiators
A2- Mentors. Front line defense. Honest conversations about how the first year is the worst. Then uplift when they do something right or try and do something right. Always remember that lack of XP doesn’t mean lack of competence #EduGladiators
Hi all. Sorry I’m late. I’m a new teacher-activist & M.Ed candidate in British Columbia, Canada. Co-founding Vice President of the B.C. Early Career Teachers’ Association. I’m teaching French Immersion Sciences 8-9 for the first time ever. Tired and proud. #edugladiators
A3- Blunt answer? In this climate we don’t. Legislation has to back teachers and education. PERIOD. Right now too many legislatures pay lip service or are straight hunting down pensions or funding. It has to change. #edugladiators
Awesome, I'm fairly new to this chat, but not the education arena, I really need a new environment entirely, not pleased and haven't been for a while. Enjoy the day. #edugladiators
Agreed! I was extremely lucky & grateful for the 5th grade team - @mrsmcfadd@gaviagirl@sbruck34 I got to work with as a student teacher. They only had my best interest in mind. I still reach out to them when I need to. #BetterTogether#edugladiators

Reading your chat now. Grateful for the collective wisdom and perspectives. New teachers need support. They’re like our most vulnerable students. Untap their potential. Help them focus. #edugladiators

Yeah, the standardized testing has to perhaps be the worst. Scoring parts of the testing, the writing side, not so bad, but the bubbles, there's got to be a better way, if you've ever taken them, it's horrible, like who writes these things. #edugladiators

We can’t continue to endorse the “educators don’t become educators for the money” mantra. Every time we do, we endorse the practice of poorly compensating teachers-certified & credentialed professionals. Educators deserve more & we can’t be afraid to say so! #call2action4ed
Tired of hearing about how great Finland education is. Doesn’t look a thing like our urban districts or diversity. While we can adapt some ideas stop propping it up as he solution. That’s disingenuous to the students and communities we serve. #edchat#edugladiators#leadupchat
Message to all my public education colleagues. Please stop saying you don’t do it for the money. You’re sending a counter message. Our hearts are in this work and that’s why we should be paid accordingly. #call2action4ed
Glad you were able to join in Nicole. You are right about new Ts. They are the future and need every bit of our support like our Ss. 👏🏽👏🏽 #EduGladiators
A3 sponsoring @edrising_ne chapters in our high schools worth stipends in our contracts like coaches while working to promote @nebsean in our universities #EduGladiators
A1: get preservice teachers into the classroom earlier and more often (not only in their senior year). Have them observe multiple teachers in different disciplines, gathering best practices from all over. Continue mentorship during their first 3 years. #edugladiators

Until we find a way to make the education industry as appealing as law, business and medicine, change will remain localized and unsustainable. The problem lies in how we grow, elevate and inspire teachers. #edugladiators#satchat#eduninjas

#EduGladiators Please don’t leave here without following others. This is how we support each other and grow. Look past the grade level or subject area. Our learning isn’t limited to what we teach but the connections we make. #growyourPLN.
We support you, Amy!
That’s why we’re voting YES on #SQ788 to fund education.

#EduGladiators keeps the momentum! The amazing @STLinOK leads us in supporting our next generation of #EduGladiators!
But first, roll call!
Who's here?
Share your name & how/where you 'gladiate' 4 Ss!

So then here’s the question to ponder... what do teachers need to DO in order to help society gain insight and understand why it’s in their best interest to support us? (HINT: it has to do with connection and inclusion...) #community#edugladiators

A3: I think the society needs to start valuing teachers as well. Like here you have to be a certified 4 years educated in a University accredited teacher even to sub. My friend in Utah can sub with nothing more than a HS diploma... #edugladiators Hard to demand more in that case
A message to new teachers..You are valued and have so much to offer and teach..All of Us have something to learn...every day!
If you're Love Students and put them First, You'll Succeed.

A2 our student teachers I suggest to them joining our 28,000 @nsea_org members & offer them a free book from the @Scholastic book fair. I also send treats to first year teachers I recruited to join union #EduGladiators
Educators have to speak up and speak out. We must take action in how we select those who make policy decisions and raise our voices. My new book includes a Call To Action at the end of each chapter with specific things educators can do to change the profession! #EduGladiators
