Next Saturday morning at 9:00 EST the amazing Jimmy Casas @casas_jimmy will join #BookCampPD to discuss his book #Culturize 📚 Looking forward to all joining! #sunchat
Morning, Audrey & #sunchat. I'm Brian, also in CO, where I teach MS students English. Today's Front-Range weather looks like a horse of a different, sunnier color!
Good morning #sunchat, just finishing up #hacklearning and my brain is going crazy for this early Sunday morning. Good crazy though. Steph Dill elementary SPED T from Colorado.
Be patient with me this morning - I think I'm flying solo! But our topic is wide open and we have a ton of "experts" in you all, so we should have a great chat covering all aspects of Education. So, what is on your mind today? #sunchat
I'm coming off a great nErDcamp in NJ yesterday, and picked up tons of info on literacy. One that stuck with me is.... Why the push to label and lexile our classroom books? One author talked of how he carried that shame for years of being labeled a "level"! #sunchat
Educator's summer learning is on my mind. Wondering if many of you pick up current published books? How can #BookCampPD better meet your needs? #Sunchat
A1) So many things on my mind! I'm convinced the ENTIRE educational system needs to be blown up and restructured! EVERYTHING I read and learn validates that we aren't getting it right. Am I alone on this? #sunchat
@susankotch as a SPED T I get so frustrated when Ts "won't" let Ss read outside their level. We have to many advances with online books and ear reading that will support overall eye reading and COMPREHENSION that leveling books and readers is such a downfall. #sunchat
Carla, it was heartbreaking. He wanted his mother to buy this book, and she did. The woman at the counter told him it was too young for him. He said it hurt him (he grew up to be an illustrator, and the book had wonderful drawings in it). To this day he remembers. #sunchat
Agree! When Ss are passionate about a book, they're willing to make the extra effort to read it, even if it's tough for them. Isn't this one of the ways we engage Ss in reading? #sunchat
Just imagine is someone said, "oh, I'm sorry, you can't read that professional book to learn more about literacy. You're only at level C, being a 4th year teacher, that book is written for those at level P in their 15th year! You don't know enough yet! #sunchat
Just a couple of years ago, our district mandated lexiling our books in our classroom libraries. We rolled out eyes, but did it. It's old-school. #sunchat
I recently did an activity in my 6th grade - ran to the library and took out 25 easy readers, had my kids each choose one, and identify plot, conflict, antagonist, protagonist, climax, POV, etc. The kids loved it. AND enjoyed the pictures! #sunchat
Karen, can you pull together some data that supports otherwise, and present it to admin? Someone is not up on their latest info... Maybe reach out to literacy groups to help? #sunchat
The green team, the red team, the beavers, foxes, bears.... Yes, all day long.... #sunchat I think sometimes we don't realize it because groupings have always been done. (ugh, I said it again - just because it was always done like that, doesn't mean it worked...)

Did they actually verify that you did that? Seems a little much. I'm an old school teacher and NEVER did that. Wanted kids to grab books based on interest, not necessarily on level. If kids get frustrated w level of diff, share books on similar topics that they will enjoy #sunchat
For years students have been given completion grades. We have conditioned kids to think that as long a they try a skill they deserve credit for it. We need to reverse this trend. Student must understand that #mastery is what is valued in the economy #sunchat
I bet they wouldn't be ashamed to go back to the "easy readers" that really aren't always easy to do something like that again. What a great idea. #sunchat
Special thanks to @davidhogg111, @Emma4Change & the rest of the #MarchForOurLives for inspiring me to get involved and be the change I want to see in the world
Proud @NRA member, #2A defender, Conservative Libertarian, and the cutest damn patriot this side of New England 😎💖💋
Same with picture books vs novels. I use them in upper elem to analyze craft and plot features. The “simplest” texts tend to be those most worthy of deep understanding. #sunchat

Agreed! We need district grading systems that allow this. What good is it if we do this and then still have to give a letter grade? We need a complete transition. #sunchat
Well... not completely open. But, pretty good #sunchat This has changed a lot in the last 18 months. New security/filtering software. Changes in thought process... It's been good. #sunchat
YES! YES! It is going to be an exciting chat with Jimmy Casas @casas_jimmy joining us! How fortunate are educators to be able to ask him questions about #Culturize#sunchat
I have a question... how often do you think kids (especially ELLs) should be read to each day? I know it depends on what age/grade level but I feel like so many things end up taking priority over read-alouds if we are not careful. What is a goal you would set? #sunchat
Sorry I am missing #sunchat. In CA learning about being a warm demander. I am in learning heaven. Would love to talk to you guys about it in the future. See you next Sunday.
I use a lot of mentor texts that are picture books. Boris Ate A Thesaurus when we do synonyms, Memoirs of a Goldfish when we do narrative writing.... the kids LOVE them! (me, too!) #sunchat
Schools w/ federal funding are required to filter under CIPA. There are many algorithms that help “decide” and legit content can be unblocked w/ discretion. #sunchat

Thank you for this! We all have different levels for different types of reading. Some professional books take me a "long" time to get through and process. #sunchat
And using TtS assistive tech like snap and read scaffolds listening to language while visually processing it - helps words make sense in context - we use a variety of read aloud AT but like snap and read #sunchat
My high school student team received a participation trophy for being in Reading Bowl plus individual certificates. Students had no interest. BUT when I asked the committee not to issue them, I was told that so many "love" the trophies and certificates. Who?!
#sunchat
I would think they would love to be read to, to better understand the tier 1 words they are used to hearing, to hear them in action. Why not begin each class with a read-aloud? #sunchat
Thanks for the input, friends! I know web filtering isn't that exciting of a topic, but it's been big in my world lately, so it helps to hear other thoughts. #sunchat
It would certainly be powerful to move away from the traditional grading system. As a teacher of seniors, this will only happen if all colleges and universities support it #SunChat
If you have suggestions about #FAR - Friends and Reading I would love to hear them. Great minds come up with ideas I haven't thought of :-) Here is a summary of what has been designed so far https://t.co/AAAObdC9nT#sunchat
We work to filter that which is required and important to filter for safety purposes but keep open all sites including SM as developmentally appropriate learning and teaching tools - for more connect w @JamesEForeman@irasocol@acpslearntech#sunchat

I think they were basing it on their own classroom experience even though they've been out of a classroom for a long time (and not in a gen ed classroom). No other rationale than a mandate, which was their rationale for getting it done. lol #sunchat
Tomorrow I’m part of the #EDParentCamp at the @usedgov and wondering what your individual states and districts are doing to foster parent leadership opportunities. #sunchat

Ask @ncollier@acpslearntech about snap and read - and other open source TTS tech we have on all student computers - not just for special education but any child who can use AT to access print #sunchat

Everyone loves a good read aloud. To "kill" some time between interviews the other night our 1st grade teacher did a read aloud to 9 adults sitting around the table. It was great, he then did the same read aloud to his 1st graders the next day. #sunchat
Cheryl, I have a list of mentors I use. I'll try to send it to you (it's on paper in my school binder.) There are so many great ones out there! #sunchat
Great leadership is not getting people to do stuff. It’s getting people to...
1. believe in themselves.
2. believe in something bigger than themselves.
#edchat#sunchat#JoyfulLeaders#FutureDriven
Absolutely, the only grades my students receive are full credit of no credit until they reach the end of the quarter. Through the year we spend the bulk of class time reflecting, revision and reassessing. #SunChat
When we level books & level kids to books it denies kids the opportunity to explore their curiosities, interests, and options - it’s a command and control strategy that emerges from a deficit model about learners and literacy - use TTS AT to create access to print #sunchat
I was not able to grade students on #mastery until I built a classroom model that leveraged technology to allow students to work at their own pace. We cannot expect mastery from students if we do not give each unique student the time they deserve to learn a skill #sunchat
A great school library 📚helps too. We’re also fortunate to have a community library with reading clubs & elementary visits, which is a huge support as well. #sunchat
We do read-alouds in PD. Ts love it! Our secondary Ts get introduced to beautiful picture books that they can use in class. The first time I tried it, I was nervous, but now remind me if I haven't done one in a while. #sunchat

I'm going to put a call out for a teacher's best picture book mentor text. Would love to see what folks are using and how they are using it in their classrooms! #sunchat
Has my perspective gone off rails if I see these tangibles as pablum that do more harm than good when considered in isolation? Data about book's (or reader's) level only gain meaning from context. Otherwise we're in Twain's "lies, damn lies, & statistics" territory. #sunchat

@JeremyDBond Many years ago, when grant writing, I needed to add specific responses about how family/community would be involved. I wanted to learn more so I jumped into online classes and became certified as Community Ed. Director - WONDERFUL learning! #sunchat
I love the @NancieAtwell philosophy of making books and reading accessible any time everywhere and engaging kids in curating and recommending books for peers #sunchathttps://t.co/0UGydQKNo8
My my my look at little Debbie blabbermouth Schultz now! Looks like she got herself in in deep trouble! Her IT guy turns out to be a Pakistani spy! “I could have fired him… But I didn’t”. #WTF#VoteHerOut

Often times we "help" (a.k.a. spoon feed) students when deep learning is the goal. If we use surface level instructional strategies we have a mismatch. Use strategies in the gray with @john_hattie high effect sizes for deep learning. #HackLearning#HackingMath#VLMath

“Reading can be a way of belonging. To open a book and see some part of yourself on the page makes you realize you are not alone, that somewhere in the world, maybe pretty close by, is something who feels, thinks, sees the world as you do." @JackieWoodsonhttps://t.co/1v2HQU98p7
Yes, but pls make sure these texts are true representations that center their experiences. Plenty of books with marginalized kids in the cover that contain bias, too. Get recommendations and read the books yourself. Use @triciaebarvia ‘s tool. https://t.co/L52fhGOnIT#sunchat

I’m interested in what my 8th grader is reading for school because they’re largely what I read in school! (Whether that consistency is good, bad or both is another discussion.) I know what she’s reading because I ask. Wish there were more of an effort to engage parents. #sunchat

If you don't pay for social media sites, what are you giving them instead of money? #Educators, use this lesson to guide students through the Facebook scandal and ask them to analyze the data collected in order to foster #criticalthinking.- https://t.co/7PPOBlh8dQ#sunchat
So true! I would love a list of books that are best representing from the POV of someone other than a teacher who never walked in those shoes. Does a qualified list exist? #sunchat

WAY! They were State and Federal grants wanting to be certain that family/community involvement was included in whatever goals were submitted. #sunchat
Yes, true, but I also advocate for teaching kids to spot bias in any source. Where better than most history text? Giving them only the best sources doesn't encourage diving deeper. Great jumping off point to a broader conversation about bias and historical perspective. #sunchat

My program is in it's infancy-my 1st year, program's 2nd-but we have almost 100 identified ELLs, so a lot of school-wide changes are needed. How can I best advocate for equity in the face of a charter's desire for "data"? #sunchat
Love Parent University and the concept of a community school. Thanks for sharing! One comment: All schools by nature should be community schools, and “Family Access” should not be confined to a day but accessible every day. But this is how it starts. #InformedFamilies#sunchat
Absolutely. We can teach S to ID bias in many things: text, podcast, video, brochure, ad, ... But, we all need to examine our own bias, too. That’s how we change things - by beginning with ourselves. #sunchat
