👋🏼 #EduGladiators Serve as an Instructional Coach at Bartlett MS in Porterville, CA. Excited about recharging this four day weekend. 🔋My #PowerOfMoments Book arrives this evening.
Good morning #Edugladiators Sean from Orland Pk IL. Dir of Instructional Tech at Marian Catholic HS and grad student working toward principal cert in 2019.
A1: Student being bullied for who they are, in the shadows not something we noticed as teachers. Everything "seemed" fine. Found out and discussed with the class the struggles we all faced and how we do not know what each other has on their plate. #Edugladiators
A1: good question!! Every time I have a student who needs things done differently. Whether that be emotionally or academically. Equality may look different for all. #edugladiators
A1 Honestly ever day is that day for me now. Current events contain an abundance of opportunities to have discussions with Ss and colleagues. #Edugladiators
A1: I was living/teaching in LA when the Rodney King verdict was handed down, sparking a group of us as @TeachForAmerica educators to protest the verdict. 25 years later that is a moment that stands out. #edugladiators
A1: My school has developed a GRIT program. I recently developed a lesson for 4th and 5th graders to teach the difference between equity and equality. This helps them understand when a classmate gets an acc or mod to schoolwork and they don't. The kids loved it! #EduGladiators
A1: I remember my first year as a teacher realizing how many of my Ss couldn’t relate to curriculum because they couldn’t see themselves in it. Sadly, this is still true today. Why does this fall on the T to find additional resources? #Edugladiators
A1) Being part of the 1st wave iPad rollout allowed young adults to communicate, read, write, create & lead when they wouldn’t/couldn’t before -empowered learners. #EduGladiators
A1: when people make assumptions about my students based upon their socioeconomic status. My kids aren’t powerless victims, they are budding social justice warriors! #Edugladiators

A1: the moments that come to mind for me always involve sitting in a room with people who hold power (who look like me) to change the systems that cause the inequality (for those who don’t). #edugladiators

A1. I was once @ H.S. Which was diverse on the outside but not in AP Classrooms. It was a school within a school. Regular or sped. Classes were for the minority/low SES students. AP classes were for the affluent #edugladiators
A1 When someone told me their Community Problem Solvers club was open only to students from their school's gifted program. Our school's CmPS club is open to all and the students feel strongly that they are more than a club - they're truly a team. #EduGladiators
A1: Each time a student issue arises at school that involves admin, it is a chance to listen and try to figure out the trigger or antecedents for behavior. These are always times to move students to level playing fields and allow them to be heard. #edugladiators
A1 It seems like every day brings a new reminder of inequalities all around us. It's always in little things: mispronouncing student names, disproportionate punishments, questioning books written about the experiences of POC... you name it. #EduGladiators
A1) whenever I’ve had a chance to advocate for any of my students. When I tell people the school i work at, students I work with, I then have to back that up and show why they need a fair shot #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators A1: The moment I started to act on the belief & have those courageous conversations that ALL Ss can learn & further their education. 🎓#ALLMeansALL & that ALL of or Ss were👇🏼

A1: Earlier in my career, there was a need to create programming for students who were not experiencing success in our school district. Time met opportunity perfectly and with some strong support we changed legacies in a powerful way. #EduGladiators
Couldn’t agree more! Current Events and barged political climate has impacted our schools in negative ways for sure...but there is a light. The opportunity for us and our kids to stand up for what’s right & treat each other with decency is a regular occurrence. #Edugladiators
A1:) We saw inequality in @CollegeBoard Advanced Placement participation which sparked a 600% increase in Af-Am Ss participation and 35% increase in AP scores from 3 to 4 => IN ONE YEAR! #EduGladiators#BeastMode
A1. Working in a community with diverse backgrounds has its challenges in connecting with our Ss. As an SRO I see Ss who love me or hate me as soon as they see the badge. The goal is to build relationships to show I am a human first! #EduGladiators

A1: My first year as P in a new building, I started a book club. It was for higher level readers. This year, I opened it to any student who loves to read. Last year, i had 12 kids. This year I have 40! #EduGladiators
A1. Sometimes people don’t realize I was raised in the projects by a single mother & so when they discuss poverty as if it is a character flaw or lack compassion I take an opportunityto let them know I am grew up in poverty. Poverty is not a predictor of potential #EduGladiators
A1: I started a project called Feed Forward. Have Cup Noodles for hungry kids. No restrictions. Any can access. Basic premise. Kindness feeds kindness. In a hard world, there are free lunches because of kindness. Kindness is an investment. No one chooses poverty. #edugladiators
I focus on leveling the playing field for staff because I believe it is a seed that grows and covers the interactions adults have with Ss. I always think about that talented T who struggled to be heard beaming with confidence after work, goal setting and support! #edugladiators
#EduGladiators A1 ELL satudents being mandated to read Shakespeare! Why do we think that is the fair thing to do because that’s what is in the curriculum?
Unfortunately the burden falls on teachers, but you’re in this fight with so many others that have identified that need. We are able to work together to make those changes #Edugladiators
A2: We have been crushing the belief that socio economic status is the factor in determining student need index. Recently at the district level we have expanded supports in schools based on a variety of factors - so refreshing! #Edugladiators
A1: There are so many moments daily. Asking questions when comments or decisions are made. Getting people to think about their assumptions, reasons. We need to push each other to learn and be better. #EduGladiators
A2: That I Know my Ss better than anyone, except maybe their parents. That's powerful and scary at the same time. We have so much responsibility to the young lives we touch every day! #EduGladiators

A2 My most important (and effective) method of combating all of the microaggressions I see is curating a large and intentionally inclusive classroom library. Daily book talks, to students and my fellow teachers. Creating empathy. #EduGladiators
A2) Seeing that not every students needs are being met. I’ve tried to work closer to teammates to help meet the needs for those students. We can’t teach as if everyone is on the same playing field, academically/emotionally #EduGladiators
A2: I found out that there are a lot of hoops to jump through at my school. Many things need approval. I’m just doing my own thing, but there remains a feeling that permission has to be granted to do new things. #edugladiators
A2 Every repeated behavior has a reward! If Ss repeat negative behaviors, they are rewarded somehow. The goal has to be to create a relationship w Ss so you can find out what that reward is and help curb repeated negative behaviors and increase the positive! #EduGladiators
A2) Young adults want to support other’s learning in our building. Some Ts think we want their Ss to teach ours. Showing them what we do to support a pivot with their understanding of what we can do. One young adult is creating a video to share #EduGladiators
A1: I teach in an urban district that serves students who live in intense poverty in an area that is highly segregated. Our kids often don’t to experience things like ice skating, hiking, trying sushi, even Chipotle. I try to help them have those opportunities #Edugladiators
A1: Just realising that as the adult in the room I needed to take complete ownership of any racism, sexism, classism, etc that goes on in my room and do whatever I can to create a culture where that is not acceptable. #Edugladiators
A1. Working in a school where everyday a child went without breakfast. We should always remember that children are not on a level playing field. It’s why the emotional connection is huge. #Edugladiators
Even though we teach in a private school, some of our Ss are on scholarship & would receive free lunch in public school. One of our Ts created a fund for Ts to donate to in order to help these Ss have lunch every day. #Edugladiators
A2 A teacher recently shared an "Aha!" moment, when she realized why our STEAM Lab program based on #NGSS 3D learning is designed to build meaningful skills for students' futures. I learned to be patient and trust the process. #EduGladiators
A1) I believe when we create these moments we #sacrifice something of ourselves for the greater good.
#Equality and #Equity will not come from nothing. We must assess the #StatusQuo and help others with the #Change and perceived #Loss. #edugladiators
Love this approach! It’s hard to dislike someone and make generalizations or feed into stereotypes if you get to know them. 👌🏾 John I want to connect you with @LouHayesJr too! #EduGladiators
A2: the truth that our systems are designed to keep those with power comfortable as opposed to innovations that might really work (and produce measurable results) but might be deemed to “risky” or alienate “a majority of students and their parents.” #edugladiators

Absolutely! The crazy thing is that adults did not realize the institutional barriers that were up. Teachers were awesome in revamping the expectation #Edugladiators
A2: Poverty, mental illness, & diversity issues are becoming more common. It forces us to step up for kids. We now have a Diversity Committee, provide tele-therapy for Ss during the school day, and are constantly brainstorming ways to help Ss. #edugladiators
A1: We are looking into brining #restorativejustice to our 3-5 bldg. I think this will help Ts and Ss to understand that discipline, mgmt, justice, etc. is not about one size fits all. Each S is an individual and needs to be treated that way! #EduGladiators
A2 STEM activities only involved the HAL, I created projects in my class for all abilities. We created our own robots from household items- electric toothbrushes to toaster ovens. #EduGladiators
A2: Finding ways to implement basic human needs into the expectations of our academic responsibilities instead of looking at basic needs as a separate issue. #EduGladiators
@3_DLeadership - Innovations mean change. Change can be hard. It's worth staying the course for initiatives you believe will truly help students and teachers. #EduGladiators
A2 A teacher recently shared an "Aha!" moment, when she realized why our STEAM Lab program based on #NGSS 3D learning is designed to build meaningful skills for students' futures. I learned to be patient and trust the process. #EduGladiators
We are looking to attempt #restorativejustice principles within our team next year. Would love to hear about your ideas and experiences! #EduGladiators
I think with the right support I would prefer they are in the Shakespeare lessons rather than being excluded. There are many supports available.#EduGladiators
A2: I was disturbed by the restricted access to honors courses based on arbitrary teacher preferences. Worked hard to remove those barriers. Open access and self-select in all ELA honors and AP courses at my school now. #edugladiators
A2: Ahhh... This is what principals do best. Control the message. Make opportunities out of inequities. Pivot and adapt for the sake of equality for all. There is often a good idea or a solid student centered outcome at the center of controversy. Find it! #edugladiators
A2. As a school leader, I've taken, along with my administrative colleagues, a restorative approach to handling much of our day to day interaction with Ss. Leading by example w/ faculty. #EduGladiators
A2: if you build it, they will come. Too many times we give up when the fight to establish something is the hardest. The most successful programs, classrooms, clubs, etc were fought for. #Edugladiators
A1: I always have & will believe, encourage & motivate students & their teacher to be limitless especially in the face of inequality! My son @Collin_Taylor13 told me if everyone does what they are supposed to do (treat each other right & stand up) 🌎would be ok! #edugladiators
#Edugladiators@EduGladiators Gender bias is the one that hit me personally several years ago. Video taping my lessons with two students to figure out why one was progressing and one wasn't revealed more about my attitude than the student. It was painful but powerful.
I try my best to shut down the negativity that follows Ss from one grade level to the next. I prefer to make my own decisions, without prior prejudices. It's so unfair to kids who are trying to change. #EduGladiators
A2: Sadly, we often blame the students instead of looking at ourselves. Why are students not succeeding? Why are students “misbehaving? Why are students not completing their homework? We need to be better prepared, organized, and aware. It’s our responsibility. #EduGladiators
A2: When a student makes a poor decision, we look to the student handbook for the possible consequence before we have a conversation with the student #EduGladiators
Our #STEAM Lab #NGSS-based program provides opportunities for all learners - self-contained special ed through G&T. Frequently our SpEd and G&T students tackle the same engineering design challenges, modified for their individual learning needs. #EduGladiators
A1. I remember vividly my 1st year in School w/ 99.6% Caucasian. A peer decided I would be his Korean punching bag. I know the T saw and they did very little to do anything about it. We must not miss opportunities to address issues of inequalities. #EduGladiators
Given choice between 2 solutions where #1 would close the gap between all students but lower the students at the top & #2 advance overall scores but widen the gap, most folx with power would choose #2. Limited resources means U can’t have it all. It’s about choices #EduGladiators
#edugladiators A1. Where do I begin...I see it from others when I am out with my biracial granddaughter. I saw it in a high school at lunch time when students segregated themselves, Of course it is prevalent in society even in 2018!!! Heartbreaking!
A2: I asked a S who was in my office almost daily if there was an adult in the bldg with whom he had a positive relationship. (I had tried & failed at building one.) He said no. It broke my heart. I reached out to mom-does he have any adults with + relationships? #EduGladiators
A2. This is in any school. Negativity and an unwillingness to change. I stress positivity, passion and a persistent desire to help others. #EduGladiators
A3) Personalized learning environment allows each person to be a leader while learning from others. Builds a interdependent environment - we are a team. #EduGladiators
A3: The more we share our unique thoughts and experiences the harder it is to marginalize and see people as "others" Our struggles are often rooted in the same themes but we will never know unless we build that environment to address them. #Edugladiators
A3 I think the more opps we have for Ss to work together, to learn about other cultures and perspectives, it helps. Have seen growth thru #PBL and presenting at #edtech conferences. We learn about ourselves too #EduGladiators

A3: By creating a culture of investment that focuses on people. Taking the time to actively listen and understand the perspectives of others is crucial. We are #StrongerTogether#EduGladiators
I had to learn that combining high expectations, rigorous assignments, and individualized support systems was the highest form of respect for my students. Lowering the bar = oppression. High Bar + Access = Equity.

A3: Give students a chance to tell their stories, to learn from and get to know each other. Teachers & staff should share their stories, too. #EduGladiators
#Edugladiators by providing the safe space necessary for the tough conversations. Truth is subjective, and our role as educators is not to proclaim truth, but to empower students with the abilities to find and articulate their own truths.

A3: This begins with a hard look in the mirror. Do we ever give Ss space and time to talk about what they are good at and find their passions? Are we celebrating specifics? Then, do we give them skills to share, be proud, and listen to their peers? #Edugladiators
That is much easier to do when the kids who look like me are succeeding. To ask teachers to be patient when the students who look them continue to be sacrificed in the name of comfort is a lot to ask for morale. #edugladiators
A2. There are 2 standards/expectations for students. Affluent student’s school focus is AP classes/college prep. The focus for low SES/ minority Ss is to just pass the state’s high stakes test. This is why outcomes are different. #EduGladiators
A3. Salutations, positivity, varied instruction and ALWAYS remembering that every child has a different skill set and life set that’s going on. #EduGladiators
A3. Educators have to be willing to step out and tell their own truth. That’s what I did in my new book. It’s scary but our courage makes us free while fear can hold you hostage. We can be a model for students! #EduGladiators#call2action4ed
A3 This has to start by maximizing 2 things: Ss have to see themselves and others in our curriculum, and we have to make room for Ss to tell their stories in a variety of arenas. #EduGladiators
A3. I have very recently begun using concept called "Orientation Asymmetry." It involves sense-making & drawing from others' experiences to reshape mental models to converge onto truth. #EduGladiators#OODA
Agreed. We must also have those difficult conversations in the first place. Still we have many who fear these conversations for a variety of reasons. #EduGladiators

A3 It is important to create an environment of honesty and where Ss aren’t judged based on answers or experiences. As the adult in the room it is important to empower all and immediately shut down behavior that leads to bullying or behavior that stops a Ss voice. #EduGladiators
A3 Reading "Shh! We Have a Plan" by Chris Haughton to classes early in the year so students learn to listen to each other and realize that the quiet ones can have valuable ideas to contribute to collaborative endeavors. #EduGladiators
A3Attuned passionate educators understand we have a responsibility not only to teach academics, but to support our Ss socially & emotionally. This requires us to engage them in decision making, navigating frustrations,& communicating their emotions in a fluent way #EduGladiators
A3: Do Nows are the perfect opportunity to allow students to connect to the curriculum and share their experiences with other students. It’s also a great way to get to know students and each other! #EduGladiators
A3: Every day, every period we start with Smiles and Frowns. Truths require moments where one has a voice. Kids in my class are connected by their truths. And kids with different truths discover the power of empathy from these moments. We laugh , we cry, we cheer. #edugladiators
To me it is empathizing and not shying away from their truth. Validating their truth that the system is designed in a manner to prevent their success. I used Star Wars and the rebellion as a good inspirational track. #edugladiators#JoinTheRebellion

A3: Started the semester (new Ss to me) w/ a selfie project. 6 slides of selfies that included 5 F's. Friends, Family, Fur (pets), Food, & Favorites (Ts, classes, places, books, etc..) Opened lots of conversations - especially about cultural food dishes. #Edugladiators
A3: PBL. This gives each student the opportunity to show what they know, rather than the traditional paper/pencil (gasp!) testing. It is empowering for the Ss to see peers coming up with a different way to show how they know and it builds self-esteem. #EduGladiators

Absolutely! It is all about positive connections with our Ss. I have had Ss with bad reputations walk into my classroom, and they have succeeded tremendously for me. It's all about connections and positive relationships. #EduGladiators
A3: honestly, I think we need to get comfortable having these discussions. The visible thinking routine, circle of viewpoints, is excellent at that. Also, diverse books!!! #edugladiators
A3: Explicitly teach Ss how to effectively tell their story and create authentic audiences to hear those stories. Even when the stories are hard to hear! #edugladiators
A3: I have tried to transform the "principal's office" into a place a child goes to in order to solve problems, be better and make things right so all parties can move on. Ss are empowered and (hopefully) learn those skills to help them today and later in life!! #edugladiators
A2: Injustices provide opportunités to change the narrative, validate your worth & ignite the fire to lead change! This is true for Ss & Ts but as Ts we must model this for our Ss so they can be fearless & speak their truth! #edugladiators
Building community is huge! When given the opportunity to share it’s so powerful to see that we have much more in common than we probably thought. #EduGladiators
A3: This begins with a hard look in the mirror. Do we ever give Ss space and time to talk about what they are good at and find their passions? Are we celebrating specifics? Then, do we give them skills to share, be proud, and listen to their peers? #Edugladiators
A3. You can know curriculum inside & out, spout off hashtags of various learning resources and avenues left & right but at the end of the day no matter how much knowledge you have means nothing in comparison to the genuine relationships we have w/ all students. #EduGladiators
A3: We are setting SMART goals with our students. Ss have to reflect on past successes and failures & commit to setting a standard for himself/herself to reach toward. #EduGladiators
A4: Above all, we must make sure all Ss have a connection with an adult who values them for who they are. This will build confidence in each S to tackle life! #Edugladiators
A3: It starts with the adults. When adults value owning their learning, intentional relationship bldg, and a “better together” attitude, it becomes important in the classrooms and in the school culture. We must model first. #edugladiators
A4: Choice, Choice & more choice. Ss created infographics about Vietnam war this week. They had their choice of topic/data to use as long as it tied to the war. #Edugladiators
A4 - By creating authentic relationships that honor and celebrate students for who and where they are, not what we wished them to be. If there are skill deficits, it’s not their fault, it’s our opportunity. #Edugladiators

A3 At Xmas I discovered a personal bias I was unaware of: a S I have has difficulty with instructions he was building a lego project. He followed the directions and persevered 😱😀#EduGladiators
A4. By respecting our Ss' experiences, perspectives, pasts...& the connections they've made btwn "dots." At same time, make sure we respectfully challenge those connections! #edugladiators
A4: Students need to see themselves in curriculum, books, decor, etc. They also need to see and learn about people that are different than them. #Windows#Mirrors#EduGladiators
A4 The moments I remember in school were the moments that were “real!” The moments that taught me something from a T or coach that had built a relationship with me. I can remember my 1st grade T name but not my 7th grade T. It’s about RELATIONSHIPS. #EduGladiators
A4. Show all students, not most or some, that we truly care. Students can spot a phony a mile away. Deep learning and content understanding is rooted in a firm foundation of a solid teacher to student relationship. #EduGladiators
Thank you warriors for an EPIC chat this morning on Creating Defining Moments for our students! Awesome sharing this am that we hope leads to action this week in your schools/district! #EduGladiators
A4: we need to KNOW our Ss. What do they hate, love? This changes regularly, so you have to stay in touch! Giving them opportunities to choose is huge too #edugladiators
A4: Be purposeful but not authentic. Making some inclusive activity for inclusivity sake is going to come across fake. BUt to work to build that sense of importance and authenticity is where the money is. #Edugladiators
A3. By celebrating the cultures of all Ss in your classroom. All cultures have contributed to society. Don’t wait for designated months to celebrate or teach. Also self disclosure along with others who represent class demographics. #edugladiators
A4: Intentionally speak to every student and smile every single day as they walk into your classroom. Make time for individual conversations where you listen, give feedback, and learn. #EduGladiators
A2. To advocate for justice & equity we must closely examine our individual beliefs & philosophies to be sure our actions match them and we havent adopted the beliefs of others because of the system we work in or are judged by. Think critically before you concur. 🤓#EduGladiators
A4 It starts by changing what we can change-- in our own classrooms. Making more room for diverse voices (from Ss and in the curriculum). Questioning systems that perpetuate inequality (grading, seating, discipline, etc) & asking other to do the same #EduGladiators
A4: When news happens in our world, nation, or community, giving students time to think, reflect, process, and talk about it. Pause curriculum or weave it in. #EduGladiators
Yes, and making our students safe enough to share them. Individual relationships between T and S are necessary, but it can go deeper than that i.e. stereotype threat. #EduGladiators
A3. We must teach & model what it looks like to look inward & take a deep look at ourselves and our biases. Then T & model to empathize, see and feel others experiences. Look outward. T them to embrace differences to understand where others are coming from. #EduGladiators
@EduGladiators#Edugladiators
These are our house rules. They are painted on a giant wall and the first thing you see when you walk in. Our teachers teach them and we have assemblies around them. They are what we live at our school.
A4b. Can't have Ss go on believing 2+2=5, no matter their experience, values. We do no (long term) favors to Ss by allowing them to believe falsehoods. #edugladiators.
Yes! Seek opportunities to work one-on-one with those students to work on a skill and build a connection. Sometimes 15 minutes of personal support and caring attention can make all the difference. #EduGladiators

A4) Continue to build the environment where Ss lead my learning & we collaborate together. As a team we count on & build up each other rather than tear down. #EduGladiators
A4: I agree it's about relationships. But that connection can't always be made. When I can't make a connection, it's my job to find someone who can. Every S needs an adult who is his/her champion, safe space, mentor. #EduGladiators
A3: A few suggestions:
1. Be the GUIDE on the RIDE, not the Sage on the Stage.
2. Encourage students to work COLLABORATIVELY.
4. EMPOWER students by weaving CHOICE into learning tasks and projects.
5. Teach Ss how to use technology to CREATE content.
#Edugladiators
A4: By planning/preparing to teach children first instead of approaching curriculum as a linear concept. There is room and time to embed opportunities for our students to have positive learning experiences instead of trudging through content like a freight train. #EduGladiators
A4: Be engaged, listen actively, be excited they are there and make sure they see you just as excited as they are. Moments become the norm after a while! #edugladiators
A3) We are continuing to grow our understanding around different cultures so we can acknowledge, validate, and celebrate others in our school. #edugladiators
🙌🏾Awesome sharing this am! What are you going to do this week to create defining moments for your kids? Drop tweets, pics etc this week & use #edugladiators so we can continue to redefine the learning experience for all students!
A4 Great team activity from @JBerckemeyer : Go through ENTIRE grade level Ss list. Who knows something personal about each Ss? The ones w/ none are the targets for relationship building. #edugladiators
Yes, and making our students safe enough to share them. Individual relationships between T and S are necessary, but it can go deeper than that i.e. stereotype threat. #EduGladiators
A3 I don’t think you have create moments. The opportunities are there. I think we go off track when we’re intentional. It feels manipulative and students know it.#EduGladiators
#EduGladiators 🙋🏻TY for affirming ways our educational system has further augmented inequities. You just brought back some painful moments for me when I didn't get into GATE. Still remember👇🏼as part of my exam. Now a proud👩🏻🎓of UCSB, UC Berkeley, Stanford, & Bard College.
A4. I constantly promoting this idea by @SamHarrisOrg to my students. "We have a choice. We have two options as human beings. We have a choice between conversation and war. That's it. Conversation and violence." #Edugladiators

A4: Provide an atmosphere that is welcoming & positive. Greet all Ss at the door each day, not just the first day. Let them know that they are loved. Provide multiple opportunities for cooperative learning groups where Ss can learn from each other. #EduGladiators
Love that you are part of this conversation. We all have different experiences with police officers. Thanks for reaching out to connect to students. #EduGladiators
What if the falsehood we allow them to believe is the system actually cares about them? #edugladiators power doesn’t like teaching kids the system is designed against them. #leadingarebellion#edugladiators
A4. #Edugladiators@EduGladiators We have to seek feedback from them. Often adults think they know what leads to students feeling like they belong, but we can't really know if we don't ask them.
A4: Just that. Let us be guided by making school an experience not something to be endured. Experiences should offer joy, challenge, support, connection, relevance, choice, wonder. Experience means “with.” Endure means “to.” Let’s do with not to. #edugladiators
Still learning, but it is awesome, helps students building confidence, explore passion, learn and grow together, then prepare a Ted Style talk to share #EduGladiators
My pleasure. Congratulations on your many accomplishments and for having the tenacity and perseverance to overcome those obstacles that were put in your path. #EduGladiators

I don't even use the office often for meeting with kids - inuse desks in the hallways throughout the day so I can be there to assist when needed or be there when a kid needs to talk #EduGladiators
"We've created learning environments that because they are designed on average, cannot possibly do what we expected them to do, which is to nurture *individual* potential." Enter #edtech. Let's fix this! #MSUepet#edchat#EduGladiatorshttps://t.co/MDiLILaK0F
What if those with power don’t want to listen? We can ask students, but when they answer and what we hear makes those above us uncomfortable, are we setting them up for failure? #edugladiators
A4. As a former behavior teacher, you have to make it a point to say something positive about each student each day. It was hard but I did it. Words are powerful & it may be the only positive thing they hear that day/yr! #Edugladiators

A4. Make sure you walk the walk. Most educators say they love kids, great educators show it through their words and actions...Every day! #EduGladiators
A4 Positive moments and memories come when teachers make it personal. If you open the door to your world, they’ll open the door to theirs. #EduGladiators
This is the reason I make an effort to include student choice in most learning tasks. Genius Hour/Passion Projects are PERFECT for this!!

This. Those in power want to focus on the students because the real power is the Ts. They can dismiss Ss much easier than Ts. “The Ss don’t know what’s best for them. We do!” #edugladiators

We need to be aware of our mental models and interrupt actions that are harmful to students. We should model caring and inclusivity. Ss will follow our lead. #EduGladiators
I have my own kids (I'm also not a school teacher). I am very open w/ my kids that they are responsible for their own growth & school is but small part (tho big in childhood!) in overall life journey. #edugladiators
Don’t agree that Ts are most important. Imo the Ss always are. But I do agree that we have to disrupt status quo thinking that leads to mere compliance of both Ts and Ss. Ts can advance Ss needs when Ss can’t. #Edugladiators

Time to shift your thinking!! Your principal is they key partner because he or she is in it for the duration! We have the unique opportunity to (in many cases) see the forest and the trees!! Lol!! #edugladiators
I just welcomed my 6th daughter into the world. I agree with you, but that is a function of my privilege (IMO). For others, school is the ONLY part of laying foundation for success, and we constantly fail them. #edugladiators
I love this idea! Just getting started, trying to get Ss to sign up, there is a curriculum to follow, we have meetings and do activities which build up to the talk. I'm very excited! #EduGladiators
I think we can have a combination of the two. It’s definitely helpful to me to have previously thought of how I might react in situations and then when they arise my response is more appropriate but still natural. Does that make sense? #EduGladiators

#EduGladiators speaking of Norway...private schools are prohibited. Rich kids go to the same schools as the poor kids. And they have some of the best results in the world. We need systemic change.
Not frustrated. Just trying to challenge and wake up a sleeping giant. Pleasantries and positivity aren’t what rebellions are based on. Hope. #edugladiators
