#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
Guess we could start the #leadupchat conversation? I was just pondering on former President Bush’s “thousand points of light” speech and wondering how I could better serve my community. We could talk about how education provides all with the opportunity to be a point of light.
Can the few of you who are here help me out? I'd like to get a new @ToddWhitaker book. I have What Great Teachers Do Differently, What Great Principals Do Differently, The Ball, Shifting the Monkey, and The Ten-Minute Inservice. What would you suggest getting next? #LeadUpChat
I also want to get a @VisibleLearning book. Which would you recommend: Visible Learning for Teachers (2011), Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn (2013), or 10 Mindframes for Visible Learning (2017). I can only pick one! #LeadUpChat
Great question! What better way to serve our community than by truly preparing all students to find their place in the world of work! Really helping them know their #StrengthsInterestsValues#leadupchat
@maxwellbulldogs work to make sure we provide more than just 9-3 education services for families, with a food pantry, before & after school instruction & often that connection to other community services-we'd love to do more but its often a $ issue or time issue #leadupchat
Hey #leadupchat—let’s keep the conversation going by making some connections to images. Saw @burgessdave do this in a #tlap chat and loved it.
Q1: What education connection can you make to this image?
I'm not a major influence in my district, but I try to live the "thousand points of lights" ideal by encouraging PBL in the classroom that brings the school and the community together. #leadupchat
A1: When you at sea sometimes you will hit rough waters, but it always smooths out. Everything can't be perfect. You have to get through the "rough" to make the smooth even better. #leadupchat
A1. Thanks Marci for stepping in and leading. This image reminds me as leaders/learners we must go boldly to new places and try new innovative strategies- challenge the status quo. #leadupchat
Wraparound services for families in need that are part of the school community—that’s how to have an impact. How can we build effective partnerships that make this possible in more school communities where there is this kind of need? #leadupchat
I loved the original & the Visible Learning for Teachers was also great-haven't read the others so I'd have to say the teacher one, in my opinion #leadupchat
A1)So many working pieces to make this work in the way it is supposed to, even despite elements of nature that may try to make it go off course. In the building, we have to work together and will have to fine tune our approaches to get to where we need. #LeadUpChat
A1 We need to open our sails (minds) to expand our knowledge as our will to learn new things for the sake of our Ss and teachers #GrowthMindset#leadupchat

yes! we find more and more that finding resources for many of our community that experience trauma of some kind is almost a full time job! ALL schools need not just counselors but social workers #leadupchat
Influence starts with an individual seeking to make an impact. Your impact matters and is essential! Thank you for what you are doing to be a “point of light”! 😊 #leadupchat
I teach in a building where some of my babes qualified for Head Start. I feel that both the district & Head Start need to be open, honest, & put the best interest of the child in the forefront! #leadupchat

We should know there are a million places to take our students at the end of the voyage. We aren’t a train where we all arrive at the same place. Let’s find new measures! #leadupchat
He gave it when he accepted the nomination for president. Essentially he was celebrating the diversity of our nation and encouraging all of us to serve in our communities—each point of light matters. #leadupchat
ensuring connection & communication between agencies is a must-all have best interest of kids at core but often there's a lack of communication that effects that child #leadupchat

A1)Being compassionate means understanding everyone comes from somewhere and that we all have our journeys and our own struggles. Acompassionate leader takes that one step further and helps other succeed despite their struggles. #leadupchat
I feel like you have to put what's best for the adults in a child's life on the back burner and focus on what's best for the child! That child(ren) are the priority! #leadupchat
A compassionate leader means to be real. Real life means real things happen and you have to show an understanding to them or you will be seen as non-compassionate. #leadupchat
A1 I believe it means to be an active listener, who understands we need to what is best for our Ss, be reflective, and hugs and high 5s are important too. #leadupchat
When we truly care about people by seeking helping them to work in their strengths everyday! Helping them find their own way not doing it the “One best way”. #leadupchat
A1: A compassionate leader understands that listening is 10000x more important than speaking. Being wise does not always mean knowing what to say, it often means knowing when not saying anything at all is more important. Ss and Ts want an ear to hear. #leadupchat
Here’s a tricky one #leadupchat. Often leaders are on a quest to be a kinder and more compassionate person yet still maintain a high degree of accountability. How do you balance the two?
What a fantastic and kind act, Chris! It is made even more special with you including how they have impacted others. I am imagining how much joy you created when the recipients get to show off a loved one! #leadupchat
Loving all of the education connections to the image of the ship. Let’s try another one! Might be more of a challenge? 😉
Q2: How can we connect what we do to this image?
#leadupchat
A2: Trust and Tone are key elements. If people trust your intentions are to help them, they will set aside their ego. If your tone is respectful and caring, they will hear the feedback and push themselves. #leadupchat
#leadupchat Hi all, I’m a 6th year teacher in my first full time job juggling 4 new courses and 130 students. I’m in Surrey BC 🇨🇦 just finishing my M.Ed-Leadership. Compassionate leadership involves acknowledging elephants in the room & creating conditions for ppl to thrive.
A2)Part of being compassionate is showing others how and why a different approach is better. You appeal to that in them that drives them. Sometimes it is necessary to redirect and reteach, but doing it in a way that is mindful of the other person’s journey. #leadupchat
We can always be empathetic, kind, see different perspectives while having high expectations focused on kids and supporting teachers. It’s takes conversations and being “firm with your principles but flexible with your practices”. #Leadupchat
Here’s a tricky one #leadupchat. Often leaders are on a quest to be a kinder and more compassionate person yet still maintain a high degree of accountability. How do you balance the two?
A1) Compassionate leaders check in with staff in ways that help them to feel that it’s okay to not be okay. They also understand that we need praise and affirmation just like students do. Self-care would be a common topic & modeling that in staff mtgs can help. #leadupchat

People want accountability, but not just for themselves - for everyone. What drives teachers crazy is selective accountability - YOU must improve, but the person down the hall gets a pass because the leader fears conflict.

Q2: How can we connect what we do to this image?
#leadupchat
A2: Tough question! I think setting your expectations, frequently pointing to them and then not being afraid to initially have gentle “hey I need you to be better in this way and this is why” conversations. You have to handle yourself with tact! #leadupchat
The pervasive anxiety never used to be a thing, but the culture has changed. The challenges of surviving together are opportunities for amazing relationships. #leadupchat
A2: If we take the time to listen and serve, our leadership won't be to do lists and other fast food items, but provide the nourishment and vitamins needed by the individuals we lead. #Leadupchat
A2: great question. It’s helping me generate ideas to enact. I could write cards teachers I work with to thank them for working hard to support students & creating our new school, include a favourite quote or a specific nice thing a student has said about them. #leadupchat
A2: A dear mentor of mine taught me to “rub their backs while holding their feet to the fire.” Kids deserve leaders who will put their needs at the heart of every decision—and hold others accountable for doing the same. #leadupchat
Here’s a tricky one #leadupchat. Often leaders are on a quest to be a kinder and more compassionate person yet still maintain a high degree of accountability. How do you balance the two?
A2 Classroom/building or district- if you separate ideas & people you miss out on key ideas and nutrients to grow kids & people-mix it up & good things happen #leadupchat

Q2: How can we connect what we do to this image?
#leadupchat
A2 I believe leaders who have compassion want the best for their community. They care by listening and ensuring Ts & Ss have what they need to reach the highest expectations. Thy show it in their communication and in their modeling. #leadupchat

#leadupchat
Yes, and because they are invested and care beyond their own fulfillment, they are willing to set aside their own feelings to build on the community bonds. #Leadupchat
A2) I’m observing many/most American educators talk with the word ‘accountability’- it really makes me feel empathy for the struggles you face in your education climate. Up here in 🇨🇦 we don’t get pressured to this extent so we feel safe to be creative & dig deep. #leadupchat

exactly! its not about holding people accountable that breaks a culture-its about picking and choosing whose held accountable as well as not communicating the expectations of what that looks like for everyone-including the leadership #leadupchat
People want accountability, but not just for themselves - for everyone. What drives teachers crazy is selective accountability - YOU must improve, but the person down the hall gets a pass because the leader fears conflict.

A2)Diff foods help in a variety of https://t.co/0JwSzhRxXA is the combination of them that helps us maintain a healthy lifestyle.Everybody’s needs are different.Learning is individualized too.Different Ss need different mixes of teaching styles to achieve learning. #LeadUpChat
A3)I am a big believer that culture starts from the top. If you can’t model it and it isn’t a core value within the leader, it cannot become the predominant culture in the organization or even a core value. #leadupchat
A3: Ripples from modelling it, talking about it, enacting it. One VP created a ‘staff buddy’ program we could opt into & design secret kind thoughtful gifts for one another, totally optional to participate. Another really held space & listener when I was honest/scared #leadupchat
A4. When a colleague missed a deadline that impacted our PD - I took that as an opportunity to do a “impromptu ED Camp with staff” and not focusing on the missed PD work. #Leadupchat
A4 I try to listen-not judge & not jump in with solutions of what I think they should do-sometimes this is hard & I benefit when others do the same for me #leadupchat
#leadupchat A3, Compassion is evident in the little things. Culture is built upon all of the little things. Sympathy cards, thank you notes, personal meetings, responses to email etc.
A3 I believe leaders have to walk the talk. I am blessed to work with an admin team who is firm but loving. We know they are driven to ensure every one of our Ss ❤️s school and wants to learn. #positiveculture#leadupchat
A4)I think just by listening to the students who come through my office for variety of reasons. I want to get to know them and build relationships. I had one student who was really lost come to my office, and as he was leaving surprised me with a hug! #leadupchat
Hoping everyone has one more creative connection in them! Loving the diversity of questions we have in today’s chat!! 👍🏼
Q3: How can we connect what we do to this image? #leadupchat
A4: I don’t wait for the new teachers to exhibit signs of distress. I lead with the belief that they are likely distressed + need me to check in & be ready to hear awesome stuff OR worry & imposter syndrome. I help them feel okay to not be okay. Crucial first step. #leadupchat
.A3: We make sure compassion is part of the culture by recognizing that we are in a building with challenging students and validating feelings of the difficult work that we are tasked with...! #leadupchat
A2: by being honest, understanding, and restorative in the approach. Look for suggestions from the individual you’re holding accountable and come up with a support plan that is realistic, growing, and accountable #leadupchat
I get choked up just reading that Cristobal! The moments when they really reach out to connect are the most incredible bits of feedback that inform what we do is working. I think holding space for vulnerability is key here. Showing we are listening. #leadupchat@saldanact

A3)Think about all that has to happen to make that light bulb turn on when the switch is thrown. The wiring, the installation, the power plant workers, etc. When a S goes into the world and is successful, then we are successful. #LeadUpChat
The @Edcamp may have been just the PD you're teachers needed. "Whatever happens is the only thing that could've happened." It was meant to be. #leadupchat
A3: When we demonstrate compassion in the little things everyday towards those we serve, they will witness first hand the power that it can bring to someone’s life. That experience can lead to a chain reaction and build a culture of genuinely compassionate people. #leadupchat

Q3: How can we connect what we do to this image? #leadupchat
Yes, or help them to decide to be okay w/doing less. We need to help others take things off their own plates, draw boundaries, decide that exercise is more important than that 1more thing. Education will literally go nowhere good w/out our mental & physical well-being #leadupchat
A3 Image This reminds me of my 5th graders from last year. I called them my #Luminaries. They lit up my life, each other, and every lesson. #leadupchat

It was an amazing moment. He had his tough guy act and he knew I could see the need for help, and I was there. I took the time. It was a good reminder of my why. #LeadUpChat
A5. We cannot have a set plan for learning but instead develop skills with students like flexibility and adaptability- essential skills for all careers. #Leadupchat
Compassionate leaders are steady lights that brighten other people’s day/workplace/life. We help to draw careful attention to mindful practice, intentional self care, & human-centred purpose. I HIGHLY recommend this podcast from @21DayKindnesshttps://t.co/1uYFBdgZt3#leadupchat
A3 We need to rethink how we look at something thats been around for what seems like for ever-LIghtbulbs needed to get better not stay the same-education can't be the same as it was 100 years ago-otherwise we end up only lighting up half the minds we work with #leadupchat

Q3: How can we connect what we do to this image? #leadupchat
A5) The lightbulb visual is a helpful analogy but my main takeaway is that hug moment. We can help colleagues to keep happy moment journals. Make the ‘wins’ visible. Share ‘em. Meditative/mindfulness/CBT strategy to help relieve chronic distress. You. Are. Enough. 💙#Leadupchat

Q3: How can we connect what we do to this image? #leadupchat
A5: I really loved the constant focus on asking or responding to what the recipient of our leadership needs. So I am going to ensure I am asking/seeking what is actually needed. Kind of like if you take the time to ask a foodbank, they often need can openers. #Leadupchat
Though I was unable to be on today...much thanks goes to @latoyadixon5 for being a leader of leaders today and taking the reigns of #LeadUpChat! Next week excited to rejoin you guys and be in the hosting seat! #tribestrong
🤗 Thx Marci! I love that you are modelling specific praise +affirmative feedback. This is what helps to bolster my bias-to-action. It’s very meta! Students and students and leaders are humans. We thrive with positive affirmation. Fill ppl’s buckets! Invest in them #leadupchat
I’m going to park this here because Sunday at 7pm Pacific Coastal Time we have compassionate paradigm changer @tweetsomemoore moderating our own #BCedchat if u want to step out of US Ed contexts for a change! #leadupchat 🇨🇦 🏔 💙 Join us! We’d love to include more perspectives!
