Are we talking actual film? Video?
A1: There is no limit to what you can do with film - from documentary, to fanciful, to talking heads
Thrilled to be here and join in this chat. This topic is a passion of mine!
A1 -- variety of topics -- we use books, history, & our campus the most (so far)
A1: I like anything you can create a narrative around from solving a problem to identifying parts of speech
Need to do some more science videos!
Students would love to imitate Bill Nye. https://t.co/dTkrLEnKvl
A1- I have students make 3 videos in my science class per year
A1 - I'm not sure I could find something it doesn't lend itself to...
A1: Topics where students agree and disagree, it sparks conversations.
A1 I say all topics are open to include film in the lessons. I like math and character analysis.
Oh come on... try harder.
https://t.co/rQspsenJZX
A1 - I'm not sure I could find something it doesn't lend itself to...
A1 I have yet to find a topic I couldn't incorporate a film into! All topics! Films come in all shapes and sizes. There's a fit.
A1: lots of different ways in Science, both science fiction & real science
A1. Agree w/ everyone but videos are also good to illustrate math concepts
A1 Any topic is great for integrating film. That is the beauty of film. Can be fiction or real.
Yes, science seems like the elephant we seem to keep forgetting about
A1- art- love putting on our fros and doing videos!
I'm a long-term sub in a 2nd grade class in socal. Gonna miss my kiddos. I have 4 weeks lefts.
A1: In my class most topics (not essay writing)....
A1: I think opportunities for students to connect to the experiences of others can be the most powerful
Solving equations, there's multiple ways of approaching them & my students love to show off their methods
Many students love to ham it up even for math https://t.co/27W48CE9ln
A1. Agree w/ everyone but videos are also good to illustrate math concepts
Oooh, would love to hear more!
A1: film can be used as launching point as some T's refer 2 it "provocation" of thought on topic. Also as shared experience 4 S's
A1 Using films to teach gets students outside the classroom doors, helps them see the world.
Hi Everyone! 2nd/3rd grade teacher in San Diego
Lisa from Central Coast, 5th grade, jumping in a bit late.

Let's try that again, Hey there Ms. Nancy!
kids learn to even talk like him, "there are no mistakes just happy little accidents." https://t.co/fgWJLOdtZm
Love . Currently learning to paint through his videos.
Oh, there are many more elephants you're forgetting about. https://t.co/51EKzN5qkn
Yes, science seems like the elephant we seem to keep forgetting about
A1 I can't think of a single topic that doesn't lend itself extremely well to video.
I completely agree, it helps everyone see their thought process in action.
A1 if there isn't a film, we make one! We can fix that.
A1 videos should show phenomenon that cause students to ask questions and investigate for themselves
Love that
https://t.co/WxEOX2OMcA
A1 videos should show phenomenon that cause students to ask questions and investigate for themselves
Hi all. Rocio - 4th grade teacher in SD North County checking in
. Social awareness inspire + skill-build , equity i.e. w/ language arts, history + SS.
A1--Creating movies is a great way to turn a routine book report into a creative, fun, engaging, assignment!
Join us on Mon Feb 1 @ 8pm PST for as we talk about FAIL=First Attempt in Learning. See U then! https://t.co/mFFznFDf4v

So true.. there's so many skills that goes into making a good film
https://t.co/N3VpLmxTRE
A1--Creating movies is a great way to turn a routine book report into a creative, fun, engaging, assignment!
I think this is important when considering video. What do we want ss to do with it?
I'm newly a coach in math/tech int so any creative ways of teaching math is good. I'll brainstorm if you do :)
A1 I think video works anytime I like to have it as an option but explanation, demonstration, etc.
A1 Film is a unique art form. Avoid projects that merely record other arts (plays, reciting poems). Use it for student voice
A1: All subjects! Last yr. I had Ss creating Vids on Boston Tea Party as assessment.
A1 Plus, we're expanding that to include, VR 3-D manipulatives and follow-ons.
Years ago, I showed Ss a video of me giving the same lecture I would've given, they loved it...same content, different vechicle
Geri here from central coast. Tech coach, former English teacher, comprehensive high school.
Film/video=excellent conduit & medium for thought exploration & creating Ss as custodians of knowledge, it resonates w/them
But what if the play was written by Ss?
A1: Older Ss: anything difficult or emotional.
Younger Ss: almost anything; iRally like BrainPOP short 🎥.
so important. Have to think from Ss perspective to avoid curse of knowledge
Ss are so good at making connections. Film allows us to show them worlds they do no know.
A2: Have kids create PSAs. I have seen some amazing examples done by middle school kids
Mostly we only publish them on their Youtube
used snippet from Mr Hollands Opus (std learning to play instrument) to have students see kindness in learning
A1. Teaching we could film a variety of topics, refusal skills and more.
A1: Video modeling is an evidence based practice that has a powerful impact on S behavior.
Rocky Logue 7th SS Templeton via Nipomo

Hi everyone, I am a 4th grade and tech teacher. Nice topic tonight!
Diane in Campbell/San Jose. Dir. of Learning, Innovation & Design (9-12); what have I missed?
Welcome Diane! We're on Q2 https://t.co/JRTgTTqcRi
Diane in Campbell/San Jose. Dir. of Learning, Innovation & Design (9-12); what have I missed?
A2: My Ss read "A Long Walk to Water" and watch clips from "The Good Lie" re: child refugees in Sudan. Film helps Ss empathize.
Yes, I think I skipped over this. The video is a vehicle, not the task itself https://t.co/3uvRwWoZy4
I think this is important when considering video. What do we want ss to do with it?
A1 We start with book trailers at the beginning of the school year (from their summer reading assignment)
A2 As in any medium, good quality stories carry good quality messages, including empathy.
A2: S's sometimes see the repercussions of words easier in film then reality since they rarely get a view of the full aftermath
Are the questions somewhere, so I can catch up?
we do science safety PSAs at the beginning of the year, Ss love it
A2) Students can relate to characters within film. Can translate this to what they see in life.
A1: We create screencasts in Computer Science to share our projects.
A2: Simple as redirecting your rage...for example....
A2 - haven't done this but have Ss search YouTube for examples of character qualities & then hold a " "Character film fest"
We are doing school rule vids this yr. (elem.)
A2 Much like literature, film creates opportunities to know another's perspective, hear their voice, & "live" their experiences.
A2- videos are a great way to learn about kids and their passions/strengths. have them make vid at yrs start all about them.
A2: If you can devote the time, character studies in films and TV can be very useful at looking at motivation.
A2: Like in literature, allowing kids into the lives of the characters in the films will help develop socially & emotionally.
Students see visuals and hear words through film, aids students in multiple intelligences.
Might we be too micro with this topic? It seems a bit like focusing on pencils when discussing writing
A2 -- Use parts of a wrinkle in time & the giver to chat w/ kids about not being cookie cutter kids
I'd want specific instances of the video.
Video Notes would be great for this
https://t.co/HBCz8c9UJO
https://t.co/YkZCZMc7pI
A2 - haven't done this but have Ss search YouTube for examples of character qualities & then hold a " "Character film fest"
A2: Have Ss write, storyboard, create/film scenarios from their own experiences then share. ex. PSA's work well.
A2 Empower Ss to express personal topics through film to create an atmosphere of empathy
I was just typing same sentiment. Film is just an interpretation of literature. You can do same things w/ both
A2 film opens up a new world for ALL our students. Things we could never access. Film and other tools like
A2: I also really like using videos made by other kids so ours can understand what it's like to be someone else.
we are working on those for part of PBIS
Goes right to analyzing and critiquing others.
https://t.co/NSJ8DZxEhT
A2: I also really like using videos made by other kids so ours can understand what it's like to be someone else.
A2 we make lots of films and analyze them in my media lit class. Commercials, PSAs mini docs on social issues. The kids like it.
A2. You don't teach empathy. You can highlight it in film and model it yourself. The children develop empathy and its beautiful
I love that, too! Excellent TED Talk by Rosie King, amazing young woman w/ autism, & my Ss really connect to her story
Love using green screen and to place them right in the newsroom. Love it for ancient civ.
How do I know when the next take place?
A2--Have students write & act in movies/short films about personal experiences that were difficult for them. Share their emotions
A2: Focus on 1-2 particular Characters + identify what Ss can relate to/understand. Use a 1st person perspective. 🎥
A2 I use film to help in Design Thinking lessons to build empathy.
It's always Sunday nights at 8 PM Pacific time.
Great example
So many possibilities with newscasts https://t.co/54B81aL5TK
Love using green screen and to place them right in the newsroom. Love it for ancient civ.
You can also use TeleStory. Easy to use. Great for younger Ss.
Agreed, . Picking right stories to unpack + have students notice sim + diff. across cultures. https://t.co/LpJfDUcH03
A2: If you can devote the time, character studies in films and TV can be very useful at looking at motivation.
Karen, is weekly. Every Sunday night at 8pm PST - more great topics, more great people! :)
The joy of film…you don’t have to be the BEST reader in class to find meaning in a film. Empowering those with other super powers.
-----------------> Q3 is set. Watch for
do you have them do coming soon trailers for the next summers books?
Q3 How can teaching through film help mitigate cultural bias and racism?
A2: I usually start my reading strategy lessons with short films first. Grabs Ss attention and it’s way less scary than text.
A3: Point out similarities more than differences. Ask WHY a lot. Why did he/she do/say that? What would YOU have done?
You also don’t have to be the most artistic or the “best" writer to create a beautiful film. https://t.co/KkpxCdCepj
The joy of film…you don’t have to be the BEST reader in class to find meaning in a film. Empowering those with other super powers.
A3: In the wake of recent events in our country, there's a lot of good stuff out there exploring these issues.
A1 My fav sort of video is parody. I’m pretty sure just about anything can be parodied. Ergo, any topic.
A3) Films and clips from film can be great conversation starters for recognizing bias and racism
I LOVE creating educational song parodies!
I'm not going to be able to stay until the end. There are many good resources on my class' media lit page: https://t.co/koEHoxjphv
I'm not going to be able to stay until the end. There are many good resources on my class' media lit page: https://t.co/WzZDgqHMTn
A2: Living the actions and consequences of the characters helps them "see" real-world problems and solutions.
A2: create a story or short film about a Student/person that has overcome something difficult or is going through a challenge :)
A3: Film provides a gateway for discussion of the "isms". Whether it be racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.
A2: So many excellent movies w/empathy as central theme to view and breakdown. Ex: Hana's suitcase, The Ant Bully, School Ties
I'm dropping out early, folks. See you next week.
would be good for this too.
A3: Use short film clips to begin an inquiry-based lesson on cultural bias and racism; have students come up with the Qs
A3 Film can help explore cultural bias and racism through the process of critique--everyone's unique understanding of one event.
The biggest being the inherent disrespect of children and young adults built into the U.S. public school model.
I still haven't used -- where should I start??
A3a Stories generally change with each telling. Films tell the same story w/o changing. What does change is culture/bias of viewer
I agree because then we can go in depth when analyzing perception and that is key in this.
I finally used for the first time. Just made questions and comments for a video of mine.
I have a good lesson plan on that4️⃣women's voting rights. I tie it to the use of mental🏨as torture
A3: Use documentaries to help students understand and "see" other cultures. wrote a nice blog: https://t.co/smJdTkaNi8
I want kids to watch my example video, and helps me make sure they GET key items.
How about having students rewrite a film from a different point of view / perspective. https://t.co/lP8lnIKJzI
A3a Stories generally change with each telling. Films tell the same story w/o changing. What does change is culture/bias of viewer
A3: Realizing we all have commonalities, we can either be like this...or use film to show similarities https://t.co/6w36bLPEEO
Foiled again! Things keep happening that make me miss ! Little ones are sick tonight...
Or create an alternate ending
A3: Like with emotions, film helps us identify and see what racism and cultural bias looks like through the characters.
Oh no. Hope they get better.
https://t.co/AUuPxX0Riw
Foiled again! Things keep happening that make me miss ! Little ones are sick tonight...
I think sources like mashable are great for finding ways to begin conversations.
-----------------> Q4 is coming very soon. Look for tweet!
I don’t know what that is. I only have these Ss one year. It’s HS. So I don’t know them from JrHi & not Ss next year.
A3 One only really knows from their own life exp. Film opens doors to understanding other cultural perspectives.
If I may ask for more details regarding what does this disrespect look like, sound like, feel like
A3: Everyone/all types of learners can connect to Film. It is a universal language in which diverse narratives can be explored.
Great idea. Would be very interesting to see various perspectives of films. Possibly film diff perspective?
A3: We can make connections with the characters in the films and with the events that take place. Real-world applications.
We have strong focus of supporting our First Nations here in Canada, making sure their perspectives are heard.
A4: Make connections with classes around the world and share vlogs? Again, focus on what we have in common.
A3: Agree w/ quick clips can start great discussions about bias & racism...maybe not this one-> https://t.co/fwj7ov1zBM
A4: Our Japanese teachers have students create video pen-pal letters for our sister school in Japan.
A4: Video is closest way we know to showcase "first person" experience..Most authentic representation to showcase
A4) So many opportunities to share end products or even in the process of film making outside your own classroom.
A3: In my 8th grade film class, we watch Rabbit Proof Fence a film depicting the true story of Aboriginal youth.Ss breakdown bias
What a super cool idea! I love that.
A3:Do a CLOSE view as you would a CLOSE read.Use a portion to analyze while digging deeper into the film through diff lenses.
One of my fav. things when teaching Shakespeare is having ss insert their own voice
Has anyone tried for global collaboration?
A4: It's a whole lot of "this is what it's like where we are" and "here's what I like to do for fun."
A3: Ss make world connections, explore current events, and important issues, allows Ss to connect with others through twitter, etc
A3-it can show a completely different perspective & point of view. It can teach empathy through another set of eyes.
No global, but MS uses it between classes
speaking of i'm upset about possibly having to leave PAUSD because of blatant discrimination.
😬🍎
A3 "Roots" is (still) excellent for providing perspective and provoking discussions for U.S. history. Ss LOVE it.
Yes, and you can unpack bias w/ safety of classroom culture w/ shared learning. https://t.co/D3EfqMASVl
A3: Like with emotions, film helps us identify and see what racism and cultural bias looks like through the characters.
A4: My class has pen pals from the Basque Country (Sp). We use vids to connect. 4 yrs of pen pals :D
A4- when u create and post a video for others to see they get a better perspective of "another world" which is their world.
RT "Coding requires precision and learning to be precise is an important life skill. "
I like using ITTT to collect movie clips and save them to a Google sheet when I favorite them on YouTube https://t.co/nTP1JgnTkK
A3: Agree w/ quick clips can start great discussions about bias & racism...maybe not this one-> https://t.co/fwj7ov1zBM
A4: Film can be asynchronous - makes it easier to do international collaborative projects.
A4) students connect on a global level by simply having unlimited time to talk with their friends (about film too).
Lots of great Vid clips on Great way to get interest & convos started
. for a global film analysis might be a good one to use... debate theories or plot
A4 Connect Ss globally w international cinema and by publishing films online for others to see.
a7 as a parallel to The Things They Carried
Q4: We love , as well as , about a 9 yr old determined to ride a bicycle in Saudi Arabia.
A4: Ss can create documentaries on global issues impt to them. We connect w/leaders & communities all over world for interviews
Important to create a classroom environment in which these conversations are meaningful and safe for Ss.
A4: Ted-Ed provides excellent way to explore globally. This Australian video covers headscarf bias https://t.co/cIhQxHFWQy
A4) Think it might be interesting to see film reviews of the same film from multiple countries
I use videos as the spark for my lessons - copied from
Thank you, I suppose my ignorance may help clarify for others too. At least get other thinking
has some great video lessons-check them out!
A4-Film can help students connect globally through sites like
-----------------> Q5 is up next. Look for tweet!
Now that's interesting idea...would it be universal concept or like an assignment kind of things? https://t.co/BEAe8rIsiv
A4) Think it might be interesting to see film reviews of the same film from multiple countries
Q5 What are some challenges introducing global issues through film? How do you address them?
A2 i agree kids learn from other kids on empathy
A5: People you want to connect with may not have the resources to do so.
A great lsn is to compare viewer reviews from YouTube vs. TEDtalks. Great dialogue about writing.
Think it'd work well for documentary movies
https://t.co/2bDyKab0Jp
Now that's interesting idea...would it be universal concept or like an assignment kind of things? https://t.co/BEAe8rIsiv
A4) Think it might be interesting to see film reviews of the same film from multiple countries
Great vid clips for elem (and higher) on
A5- sometimes tough to address w/o bias.
A5 Language frames the way we think. Foreign language translations can be misinterpreted or nuances can be missed.
A5: I think the biggest issue is getting the intended message across w/respect, kindness, and positivity
I learned to respect "the pedagogy of cool" from and video was huge piece of that
Participating in
Reminds me of all the awesome resources that we have available for use with students.
What are some resources that Ts are using to connect with other classrooms across the world?
A5: Finding films suitable for class (not too mature) and also not too long. Can break them into smaller pieces & set context.
In this doc style, could that limit scope and sequence of available approaches of message or would it foster innovation?
A5: It's important to know what issues Ss are sensitive to because this will impact the way they react. Knowing your Ss is key.
A4 "Where the Hell is Matt?"
A lighthearted way to get Ss thinking of other people/places around world. https://t.co/RC52azdaNS
A5) Film might not cover all the sides of an issue. Can have students conduct their own study.
A5 Perspective & understanding are the biggest obstacles to addressing global issues through . Americans are provincial
Such a great idea to compare documentary reviews from multiple countries! I love it.
A2 you tube is great idea on empathy by other kids. i use it for my autistic daughter to show her empathy
A4: as a school, we hold a film festival in which we watch international films & hold connected community engagement learning
I think that you'd want to leave it open enough for students to interpret and to make it their own.
Looks like: Ss not following interests. Sounds like: very quiet, little convo. Feels like: oppressive adult control.
Reminds me of the article "Shakespeare in the Bush"
We've watched a few of those! Great way to open Social Studies.
So how might that look like beyond this documentary style? In what ways might a Ss approach
Mindfulness that some of students might face similar challenges in their lives and may need special prep. https://t.co/JPWqc9wtnV
Q5 What are some challenges introducing global issues through film? How do you address them?
A4 Films n video documentaries can be like time capsules or snapshots. Like taking a walk around a block anywhere on the planet..
Agree. Following up a film w/ additional research makes the impact even greater.
I’m getting the idea that handling film is very similar to text. Look for bias, find multiple perspectives, help ss connect.
What might be some connections between the two that speak to you?
A4 Followed up by some compare & contrast stuff. My best guess.
Q5 Challenge filmmaker’s point of view + evaluate films for bias in considering other perspectives
Wonder if we could have students analyze scripts and then watch the movie.
Hmm https://t.co/9WUnfjtgo6
I’m getting the idea that handling film is very similar to text. Look for bias, find multiple perspectives, help ss connect.
That's specific and general, and I need a shower cause I feel dirty. That makes me so sad
---------------------> Prepare for Q6 from
A5 Cultural differences. How to tell a story w/o putting people off the idea.
A5-considering that some films can be biased, it could be challenging to find ones that don't try to influence the students.
Looks like: youth sitting indoors. Sounds like: unrequested lectures. Feels like: the slow draining of a lake.
Great idea! My 7th grade Ss read "The Christmas Carol" then watched key scenes. Approach could work w/ heavier topics
A4: i'd suggest using 🎥that Ss can relate to/themes they can understand either on a social level or on a global level.
A5 Maybe something like film/video Flat Stanley thing where a form of feedback is requested. Serialize the piece n adapt over time
A6: Well my brother's getting married soon, he told me w/animated gif of Mr T saying, "I pity the fool who don't make it" mssg hrd
I'll be back for the next one, I loved it!
A5: frame the "lesson", film is a medium in which content is delivered, it can't be a passive activity. Scaffold, question, frame.
Love that you wrote “key scenes” so much film is viewed as “We read the book so now we’ll watch the movie”
A6 The obvious one.. film someone practicing something & then have ‘em watch/critique how they did.
A2 brain pop jr has videos and great resources to empathy my daughter liked video
did this with TKAM screenplay, movie, and novel. Led to excellent discussion
Agree. So much visual literacy to be gleaned from film. Learning the language of film = better filmmakers
W/this understanding how might that guide a project like we're talking about?
Because, in the end, want Ss to create even more than we watch!
Looks like: Some Ts trying to free Ss. Sounds like: Ts unsuccessfully battling the setup. Feels like: Ts regret.
Thanks for the chat but it's almost midnight here in detroit and this stack of tests aren't going to grade themselves
If these elephants could be cured instantly, what might that "cure" look like?
Always happy to answer any query and interested in your thoughts.
And sometimes there's even non-educational parodies like "I Love a Bacon Fight" https://t.co/Q7ISU1pV9g
I LOVE creating educational song parodies!
IL👮🏻+😷+ ClassDojo interfered with my professional career options and personal life choices.
--------------------> will be sending out Q7 soon.
Q7 Have you used student-centered filmmaking in your classroom? If so, share a product, lesson, idea, etc.
A6: I use Inception to teach perspective, literary terms, recursion, relativity, psychology, filmmaking, mazes, philosophy, & more
Interesting, that was a great movie...
Social studies + statistics can be addressed w/ + racial inequity. Stories humanize w/ student advocacy.
A7: Yes, love using green screen to get students to present their learning via movies
I have to cut out early. Thank you to the moderators for a great job and to everyone for sharing resources.
Bye Nancy! :)
Have a great week. https://t.co/FM4vntkfsS
I have to cut out early. Thank you to the moderators for a great job and to everyone for sharing resources.
A6 Students can use this https://t.co/0yUPHN1HJu to create their own videos using true homonyms use to find examples
A great and complex Q, but begins with the basic appreciation of youth as people worthy of full respect. Easy to say.
Went to a session on green screen. Need to see where that might work best w/ my ss.
Yes! Best green screen app out there. Ss currently using it for special effects on Class Craft movie
A7) Need to make this happen. Only as a student choice, want group involvement.
---------------------> Prepare for Q8 from
A7: Stop motion, documentaries, graduation video, PSAs. Best project is our C-Span Student Cam contest https://t.co/8dKMRwIDoV
A7 The act of is inherently student-centered. And interdisciplinary.
That's a great first step, realizing they are, and should be as involved in THEIR education as possible
