A1: Providing students with different pathways to learn/demonstrate their learning and allowing them to choose the pathway that is best for them. Helps them become more independent and take ownership of their learning. #5thchat
  • MrBaskwill Jan 30 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: Self-Determination means that Ss can persevere through problems. They can get stuck and not give up. It is a huge step to being independent. It cuts down the reliance on the Ts #5thchat

A1- determining your own path and journey- taking ownership and risk and encouraging students to move beyond their comfort zone- #5thchat
  • JennieW200 Jan 30 @ 8:10 PM EST
Self-determination to me means doing something based on what you believe you should do, without needed the motivation of others. It connects to independence because it is something an individual can only do for themselves. #5thchat
  • wadewhitehead Jan 30 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: “I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become.” -Carl Jung #5thchat
  • mrsmoore06 Jan 30 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 - Self-determination means having the motivation to do something without needing/wanting a reward. By having self-determination, a person can complete a task on their own with pride. #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Jan 30 @ 8:11 PM EST
Self-determination: ability to make your own, positive, choices. This feeds into our #empowerment mentality in my room, allowing kids the independence to choose their learning path. #5thchat
  • chadw675 Jan 30 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: Self-determination means always having an end in mind and striving to meet that goal. #5thchat
  • techieteacher Jan 30 @ 8:11 PM EST
Self determination means being motivated to do something by oneself without someone forcing you to do it. Today my 6th graders and I Skyped with an author and there were so many that left class excited about books they could read next. It was one of our best days! #5thchat

When students are so into making meaning, figuring it out they don’t want to leave your room and can’t wait to come back tomorrow. They have what it takes to persevere #5thchat
  • iowajonhuebner Jan 30 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1. When I see self determination. I see Ss engaged in a task. They ask questions, thinking of pathways through problem. They find ways around road blocks instead of seeking help or asking "I don't get it." #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: I think that idealistically it means to make your own choices irregardless of any other factors. But in practice, we take into account how our decisions affect others, long-term implications, etc. My Ss make decisions independently but they generally know my opinion. #5thchat
  • yenneam Jan 30 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1 Self-determination to me is grit. Whether learning is easy or difficult, it's being able to self-advocate, get the help needed, and keep pushing. Independence comes more quickly to those with grit. #5thchat

  • MrPStrunk Jan 30 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2: When students ask me questions, I respond with more questions and force them to figure out answers and promote independent, critical thinking. #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Jan 30 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1: To me, self-determination is recognizing the next step & initiating! Ss may hesitate at first, but eventually it becomes a habit & creates independence #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Jan 30 @ 8:14 PM EST
Empowerment happens through settings weekly class goals for environment and expectations. Ss knownwhat needs to get done by week end, and they choose their path to success. #5thchat

It sure was! I ended class smiling about what we were going to do next. They just wanted to know what novel we would be reading next was and who we could Skype with next! It was awesome! #5thchat

  • MrBaskwill Jan 30 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2: By not always answering their Qs, getting them to dig deeper and not always rely on me. Give them the opportunity to make choices that make sense and pick materials they need to be successful #5thchat
  • JennieW200 Jan 30 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2: Allowing the students to have the choice of how they want to approach their work. This allows them to put the pressure on themselves and not anyone else. #5thchat
  • kthomas4808 Jan 30 @ 8:14 PM EST
When I think of self determination and independence w/my kinders I think of them carrying on with there own curiosity. Finding the answers, trying things and doing it on their own, sometimes purposefully out of sight of adults. 😊 #5thchat

A2 - I've taught my students that it's much more valuable that they make decisions freely (without asking my permission before-hand) in order to improve their decision-making skills. The feedback they receive from me if they make a poor decision is rarely a deterrent. #5thchat
  • iowajonhuebner Jan 30 @ 8:15 PM EST
A2. Giving them options...choice boards. Presenting different strategies to use. All to allow Ss to find their own path towards to solve a problem/issue independently. #5thchat

A2 I empower them by providing them opportunities to see how awesome reading truly can be and how it can connect us as people. I want them to be self motivated, to read bc they found something they can’t put down, that excites them #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Jan 30 @ 8:16 PM EST

  • yenneam Jan 30 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2 Ask questions about what they need to learn, practice, and show mastery of their skills. Make pathways and resources available, to include face time with other Ss and Ts, and give them the gift of time. #5thchat

  • JennieW200 Jan 30 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3: Two goals that I would like to set in my classroom is goal making, by having each student write down their personal goals for each section as well as self-advocacy because it is important for the student to be clear on what they need. #5thchat
  • KRScienceLady Jan 30 @ 8:21 PM EST
Build relationships, empowering students, meaningful learning experiences #5thchat
  • mrsmoore06 Jan 30 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3 - I incorporate student choice, goal setting, self-advocacy, and self-regulation in my class. My students are constantly setting goals, they advocate for breaks or to sit somewhere else, and they monitor their behaviors through positive behavior charts. #5thchat
  • chadw675 Jan 30 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3: We encourage all of the above in my school. I empower students in many ways as an admin. Students contribute to newsletter, have school jobs, help out at events #5thchat
    In reply to @LindaFarringer
  • DrLMNelson Jan 30 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3. We stress the importance of self awareness! The more self aware our Ss are the easier it is to self-regulate and set specific, attainable goals that allow them to activate choice! #5thchat
  • MrPStrunk Jan 30 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3: I'd say the biggest one I promote is self-advocacy. If students need assistance, I want them to come up and ask me, and take ownership for their education. If I hand them everything I am only teaching them to eat for a day instead of eating for a lifetime! #5thchat
  • yenneam Jan 30 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3 I feel like I touch on all of those every day to a certain extent, depending on the S and the need. This week is habit 2 - Begin with the end in mind. Explicit goal-setting time. #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: I try to encourage all listed but find self-reg., self-advocacy, & awareness the most difficult to see results #5thchat
  • brianfahey61 Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: Self Instruction: what do u want to learn, what resources can u use, how will u know when you're finished? How can I help? #5thchat
  • techieteacher Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3 my Ss are awesome at choice making, they are getting better at setting goals and self advocacy. Our best days are when we spend time talking about what we are reading and how it’s effecting their life, and how a book reached out to them #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3 - All of those components of Self-Determination are so important! It's also important to know when to restrict choices or assist with goal setting, etc. I work hard to teach my 5th graders those skills by scaffolding them and explaining how to be successful with each. #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: all of the above! BUT self-advocacy at this age is so important! Encouraging Ss to stand up for their own education and needs in the classroom creates more meaningful learning #5thchat
  • kthomas4808 Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: When children play, all of these components are engaged. I make time for my students to play. #5thchat
  • iowajonhuebner Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
Yes, I agree. If you get Ss to trust you then you as a teacher have open all sorts of doors for students to achieve greatness. #5thchat

  • KRScienceLady Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
Learning is a messy process, not linear, doesn’t happen in sequential order #5thchat
  • msweisenbeck Jan 30 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3- choice and goal setting are huge as is self reflection. It’s part of our daily RESET routine. I also try to instill the self-management and advocacy you giving them a chance to use their voice, students help make decisions and contribute ideas ! #5thchat
  • wadewhitehead Jan 30 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3: A fundamental question must be answered daily: How can I change school to fit kids instead of changing kids to fit school? #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Jan 30 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3: I focus a lot on choice making, particularly helping students recognize options & cause/effect of those options... it seems to help them focus on the rationale & thinking behind choices rather than just making an action #5thchat
  • jcaseydesign Jan 30 @ 8:24 PM EST

  • iowajonhuebner Jan 30 @ 8:25 PM EST

A4 - This is an area I would like to get better in. I don't believe I provide enough opportunities for independence in my classroom. #5thchat
  • LindaFarringer Jan 30 @ 8:29 PM EST
I love the ideas being shared at our #5thchat that is happening right now! What a great group of educators!
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Jan 30 @ 8:29 PM EST
A5: Students know what is required each week and can work on in the morning, they monitor the time and schedule and are ready, they choose how to practice in math and how they want to learn, flexible seating, sign out for bathroom instead of asking... #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Jan 30 @ 8:30 PM EST
Self determination means allowing for Ss voice and choice in classroom, setting goals for oneself and through reflection judging where you stand. Independence controlling your own learning with passion and drive to move forward on your own. #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Jan 30 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4: Morning choices to start the day with high energy (art, puzzles, games, movement), flex seating, weekly assignments (you work on what you NEED to work on, everything is due on Friday) #5thchat
  • yenneam Jan 30 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4 Math is flipped, and Ss are moving through curriculum at their own pace. They track mastery levels, seek assistance, ask for assessments as they need it. It's a beautiful thing! #5thchat
  • jcaseydesign Jan 30 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4 Daily? I struggle with this. I think I'm somewhere near the middle when it comes to S freedom v. T control, but I haven't found the daily magic yet. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4 - My students begin the day by turning on the video announcements, taking attendance/lunch count, they sit where they want and choose chairs that meet their needs, they get the computer card, they run REARJMCL at the end of the day, they set a whole-class goal, etc. #5thchat
  • JennieW200 Jan 30 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4: Flexibility is important for independence. I can be in seating or in choice of reading or many other things. Giving students a choice allows them to be more independent. #5thchat
  • kthomas4808 Jan 30 @ 8:31 PM EST
A5: Students choose their writing topics and “shop” for their just right reading books each week. Students also choose projects to work on in our maker studio and who to work with on projects. #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Jan 30 @ 8:32 PM EST
A4: Ss can work anywhere in the classroom, which is important for me because I personally like to be comfortable and what feels comfortable to focus for me is different each day. Hoping to increase improve this even more in my room w/ flexible seating options next year! #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:32 PM EST
Once per week. We have a binder with 7-20 goals each. A few were created by me to start and the rest are created by the students. Some come from feedback I give them, but most are areas they want to improve themselves - lots are skills related rather than quantitative. #5thchat

A5: After listening to a podcast on the way to work a few weeks ago, I committed to giving up control about where kids sit when on the floor. They already got to choose places when writing and reading. This last bit was hard, but they choose so wisely ! #5thchat
  • mrsmoore06 Jan 30 @ 8:36 PM EST
A5 - I've thought about giving up control over Daily 5 rotations to promote independence in my students, but I'm worried that they will be off-task. However, this could make the students make better choices without myself watching over them. #5thchat
  • jcaseydesign Jan 30 @ 8:36 PM EST
A5 I've thought about giving up control over how Ss demonstrate knowledge of chap content but I'm concerned that what they choose to learn won't be as comprehensive as it needs to be. The benefit would be that at least they engage enough to learn something. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:36 PM EST
Sorry - I realized that was confusing. Ss each have their own binder w/ their own personal 7-20 goals in it. They add goals freely, we dedicate about 30 minutes to working on these each week, and they determine when a goal is met (after clear expectations were provided). #5thchat
    In reply to @LindaFarringer, @JuliaGalvanSTEM, @Beulah_ES_Willi
  • techieteacher Jan 30 @ 8:36 PM EST
A5 I’ve thought about giving up control over what Ss are learning and when but then I’ve thought of the self motivation and self advocacy that would come from me giving up control and want Ss to have more choice in what they learn and when and I think we’ll all learn #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Jan 30 @ 8:37 PM EST
A5: Great activity. A few years ago I could have filled the page with what I was worried about giving up control over, now I know it's usually positive so if I see an opportunity, I take it. #5thchat
  • brianfahey61 Jan 30 @ 8:38 PM EST
Thought about giving up control over parent conferences, was worried that they would not be as good, found that they were better! #5thchat

Lol! I’m a vet teacher of 27 yrs- first year for flexible seating, no desks, students taking active role “running classroom” , students giving mini lessons, seeking collab on activities that once were independent and quiet. I’ve let go of so much and am so glad I did!! #5thchat

A5 Giving up control of the daily routine, but I'm worried that those who take advantage and waste time will get nothing done. It may give them a chance to enlist a peer for support rather than me! #5thchat
  • JennieW200 Jan 30 @ 8:39 PM EST
A5: Giving up control over assigned seating in the class, but I am worried it can be distracting if they choice to sit with their friends. #5thchat
  • Beulah_ES_Willi Jan 30 @ 8:39 PM EST
I’m worried about giving up control over seating. I’m concerned they will make poor choices and be too talkative! I won’t know unless I let go! #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Jan 30 @ 8:39 PM EST
A5: I’d love to try the flipped classroom approach in math, but I’m worried Ss will struggle as it’s new to them. Or maybe it will foster independence and allow me to spend more 1:1 time with students therefore providing a huge overall improvement 2 meeting objectives? #5thchat

  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:40 PM EST
A5 - I've honestly stretched the limits on this one! I'm pretty sure I've had my students do just about everything other than report cards! (We've done student-led conferences, they make copies at the copier, they transition us between subjects, they teach mini-lessons). #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Jan 30 @ 8:40 PM EST
A3. I incorporate goal setting, self-advocacy and self-regulation. With our projects, the Ss know where the goals are to complete them and set them for themselves. They advocate for breaks, change-up in activities, setting rules in the clrm too. #5thchat

Q6: To encourage these students to work with others it is best to put them in a group with at least one student they are comfortable with. This will make them feel better about working with others. #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Jan 30 @ 8:42 PM EST
A6: I let them know what they are doing so well they should be "go to" person and that usually gets them up and working with others #5thchat
  • iowajonhuebner Jan 30 @ 8:42 PM EST
A6. I talk to them about the future. That most jobs are going to require you to work with others, not in isolation. So I tell them we are going to practice this. We practice how to politely agree with someone and politely disagree with someone. A great life lesson. #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Jan 30 @ 8:42 PM EST
A6: I have several Ss in this boat. Jigsaw learning groups work awesomely with them. They learn and collaborate with a group, but when we break out to our jigsaw squads they are one person teaching a group #empower #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Jan 30 @ 8:43 PM EST
A4. flexible seating, where they work on proj., choosing partners to work with, work independently, or with teacher if extra help needed. When they want to do a change -up on activites as a group vote. #5thchat
  • Beulah_ES_Willi Jan 30 @ 8:44 PM EST
A6: We do a lot of Kagan activities so they have to work with their teams or partners. They share answers and explain their reasoning when there is a disagreement. Ss don’t realize how involved they get!#5thchat
  • jcaseydesign Jan 30 @ 8:45 PM EST
It was great chatting with you all. I have to go, but I'll be back for future chats! 😊 #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jan 30 @ 8:45 PM EST
A6 - I try to point out that we get to work alone at home and in most other grades/classes. In our classroom, we believe that two heads are better than one. We believe that "collaboration allows us to know more than we are capable of knowing by ourselves." #5thchat
  • brianfahey61 Jan 30 @ 8:45 PM EST
A6: Playing a low-stakes, fun game that can only be accomplished with a partner or two. Don't forget that introverts have needs #5thchat

A6: We have a lot of discussion about benefits of collaborating w/ others & how it provides different perspectives & experiences 2 solving problems, therefore creating a more well-rounded final product. Ss “got it” & rarely work alone now! #5thchat
  • kthomas4808 Jan 30 @ 8:46 PM EST
A6: I find this hard to encourage but so important. It is often a matter of them coming to see the social benefit of compromising. I’m looking for ideas on this one. #5thchat

I love when kids take it upon themselves to fix what's wrong in our classroom! I constantly tell them I need their help and can't do it all myself! They've all stepped up and claimed ownership of the operation of our classroom! :) #5thchat

A6. Sometimes, I gradually work them into the group to work with other Ss. I will work with them in the group to get them to feel comfortable with their peers, and then gradually step away. I stay close at first to see how things go, and then let them go. #5thchat

A7: Give it time and build trust, let them know your expectations #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Jan 30 @ 8:50 PM EST
A7: morning meetings to empower them each AM. We also revisit our weekly goals, our expectations of ourselves as leaders, and reminders from our classmates as to what makes us awesome! If the day starts on that note, that mentality will stick better throughout the day! #5thchat
  • msweisenbeck Jan 30 @ 8:50 PM EST
A6- we do a lot of class building and team building! It was hard for students to adjust to being allowed to talk and help each other! My Ss work in clans playing #Classcraft and that really seems to unite them! #5thchat
  • brianfahey61 Jan 30 @ 8:50 PM EST
A7: Make it non-threatening so they're willing to beyond the familiar/safe. Make parameters clear, which reassures them. #5thchat
  • mrsmoore06 Jan 30 @ 8:50 PM EST
A6 - I constantly encourage peer conversation and collaboration. I remind the kids that by talking to one another they may see things in a different way or they can be a teacher to someone else. #5thchat
  • MrPStrunk Jan 30 @ 8:51 PM EST
A7: It is the art of the sell! By praising independent learners in class, other students want to follow that example and those who are still resistant you gradually release responsibility. Continue to promote it at school and make it a norm so Ss can take that norm home #5thchat
  • teachforthought Jan 30 @ 8:51 PM EST

  • JennieW200 Jan 30 @ 8:51 PM EST
A7: Although ideally you would like to work with each student equally, if the student is not getting the support at home it changes this. As a teacher you will have to make up for the lack of support by giving it to them within the classroom. #5thchat
  • mrsmoore06 Jan 30 @ 8:52 PM EST
Q7 - Again this is something I struggle with. I try to make sure I focus on independence at school and remind the students that they can do anything. However, it is difficult for me to make the home connection. #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Jan 30 @ 8:52 PM EST
A7: This is a rough one, but I do think other Ss who are getting that support at home help to motivate others through modeling that independence in the classroom. Kids are receptive & can learn more from each other than us! #5thchat
  • iowajonhuebner Jan 30 @ 8:52 PM EST
A7. I think you need to set high expectations. Model and explicitly teach the expectations you are seeking. Be the role model they need to be successful. #5thchat
  • Beulah_ES_Willi Jan 30 @ 8:52 PM EST
A7: I think it’s a slow year-long process. We discuss how we are the leaders in our school now and are preparing for middle school. Discussions about responsibility and independence occur often depending on the situation. #5thchat
  • LindaFarringer Jan 30 @ 8:54 PM EST
  • yenneam Jan 30 @ 8:54 PM EST
A7 Providing opportunities for success can intrigue them! They can learn that at home there's one way and at school there's another. They do that all the time! #5thchat
  • gdorn1 Jan 30 @ 8:55 PM EST
A7. I encourage peer collaboration and help with activities and projects. I encourage the kids to utilize kindness and make good choices as they are working and helping one another. #5thchat

A8. We need to be the model as life long learners. We need to show we make miskakes. When a error occurs, share you thinking aloud on how you talk your way through the problem. Ss need to see this skills modeled. #5thchat
  • brianfahey61 Jan 30 @ 8:57 PM EST
A8: Show them how excited u are about new ideas/challenges, what u learn from your PLN and from the students, take healthy risks #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Jan 30 @ 8:57 PM EST

Q8: Enthusiasm. Students will not want to do the work themselves if they think you are not interested in it either. #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Jan 30 @ 8:59 PM EST
A8: in the words of the Frizz, make mistakes and get messy! Own your mistakes, think aloud how you are learning from them. I love to share with my Ss when something goes wrong, or when they ask me “are you sure that’s right?” #neverstoplearning #5thchat
