Welcome, Coaches to the Tuesday Night #swarmfbchat I am your host, Ryan McCartney - DC, Salem HS in Indiana. Entering my 22nd year as a coach, 18th as DC. I'm so very glad you stopped in to share your thoughts on tonight's topic! Take a sec to say HI...invite others too!
As always - we utilize the Q1/A1 format; please use our hashtag in your responses for max exposure. Like/RT as much as you want - feel free to start side convos as well! #swarmfbchat
Tonight, we will focus on how veteran coaches can lighten their load and help out young coaches AND how young coaches can get more involved in their schools/programs. #swarmfbchat
Q1: How have you been able to either delegate more responsibility to your assistants OR accept/seek more responsibilities from your DC/HC as a young/new assistant coach? #swarmfbchat
A1: The way I gain more as an assistants. Is to be more proficient in my day to day tasks. As well as help out where needed. Ensure that what is expected of me is done before pursuing other duties. I have learn to earn other tasks instead of asked. #swarmfbchat
A1: With my 2 assistants (3 years total coaching exp) - I am wanting them to tell me the WHY to their coaching vs me telling them the WHY and dictating what drills to run. Gotta let them be coaches too! #swarmfbchat
A1 as a young coach, take everything seriously. Do EVERYTHING at a high level. As a DC I try to give asst. ownership and value their input. Start small and earn it. Wise coach once told me to be a great coach, pick up a broom. #swarmfbchat
A1: We operate on a Co-Coordinator system. I operate the front end with our LB coach and our Coverage Coordinator operates the back end with our corners coach. We game plan as a front/back end and then marry it together on Sunday
#swarmfbchat
A1: as a young new coach I always volunteered to do whatever I could. As a DC this year I delegated the practice script cards and scouting reports to our other defensive coaches. Worked on together but they put it together. Helped me tremendously #swarmfbchat
A1- assigning specific tasks to be completed, hudl columns, run cards, pass cards, certain cut ups, the more coaches feel they are important as useful they will work hard. Where I have struggled with young coaches is then releasing that it’s not the nfl...#swarmfbchat
A1. This will be my 20th year of coaching with 7th as a HC. I think the biggest thing for me is to not assume young guys know what I'm talking about and just give them specific tasks. For example, DBs coach will break down opp. Wrs. #swarmfbchat
Q1: How have you been able to either delegate more responsibility to your assistants OR accept/seek more responsibilities from your DC/HC as a young/new assistant coach? #swarmfbchat
I’m in a unique situation being the only coach for us who is in the building. I’m fortunate enough to be around the team each day and choosing the teaching profession has given me the opportunity to coach and prepare. 1st yr Co-DC and looking to prove myself #swarmfbchat
As a young coach, it is of the utmost importance to be 100% reliable/accountable/and eager to carry a bigger load. The easiest way to get more responsibility is to gain the trust of your HC / Coordinator.
#swarmfbchat
A1 cont: equipment room needs organizing, weight room is for all coaches, laundry, practice equipment... most young guys never think how any of these things get done, they just always are done #swarmfbchat
A1: Young coaches be willing to do anything and volunteer. Be 1st in and last out. Learn as much as you can not just your side of ball. As DC like to ask other D coaches opinions and give task on scouting reports.
#swarmfbchat
A1) I’ve sought out opportunities to grow in the off-season mainly (clinics, visiting colleges that run similar schemes, talked with @coachcobes , read @The_Coach_A books, shared my vision as a leader with others). And most importantly, being involved with the kids! #swarmfbchat
I agree that would be good but I don't think there are enough young coaches that put the time into the craft like we do. So, by breaking it down into small tasks, they learn the big picture. #swarmfbchat
Luke 16:10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”....if the largest opportunity you are given is to run JV scout team, make it awesome #swarmfbchat
A1: Yes! My HC put me in complete control of the weight room and I love it! I love being able to set up the program the way I want. We are both pleased with the results so far. It gave me a chance to prove myself despite being the youngest coach on the staff. #swarmfbchat
Q1: How have you been able to either delegate more responsibility to your assistants OR accept/seek more responsibilities from your DC/HC as a young/new assistant coach? #swarmfbchat
A1. To know your assistants is to Grow your assistants. Make sure you are hiring people who have strengths in areas that you need help or lack in. #swarmfbchat
Q2: How involved are you/your assistants in Special Teams? Have you thought about allowing assistants to take a unit and run with it? Like a test of their ability to lead a unit? #swarmfbchat
A1)Do your job, and do it well regardless of how important you think it is. And don’t ask to be the DC, your HC wants to win and if you being the DC is best for the team he will ask you. #swarmfbchat
assign Hudl Columns, Playcard Drawing, D drill layout for the day (so everyone knows what we ALL do) allow them to cut up film for study times and time to address team not just position group also major contributors in game planning, that’s why they were hired #swarmfbchat
A1: Accept as many responsibilities as possible. I always ask if there’s anything I can do to help the team. I took it upon myself to develop a playbook on Hudl for spring practice! My aspiration is to become a DC within the next few years and HFC way down the road. #swarmfbchat
A1: As a head coach, I think a lot of it is the environment you set within your program. Let the assistants be the “head coach” of their position groups. If there is a disagreement, discuss after practice. Let the assistants have control! #swarmfbchat
A1: Young coach here. Being faithful and trustworthy with the little things. Also, having the awareness to recognize things you can help out with and taking the initiative in taking them off your DC’s plate. #swarmfbchat
and have been involved in the past too. Firmly believe that the HC has to value special teams in order for it be successful. Also, all hands on deck!! #swarmfbchat
A2: Our head coach determines who is in charge of a unit and then our coaches all coach a position within that unit. We treat it like offense and defense
#swarmfbchat
A2: that’s actuallywjat im trying to get better at I’m not very knowledgeable in ST. But it’s a great skill set to have my HC is pretty good at it. #swarmfbchat
A2: STC gives everyone assignments. Mine were the left side of kickoff, block side on punt block and FG block. Great way to see if young (and old) coaches value the details. ST should be coached with the same urgency as their Indy. #swarmfbchat
Q2: How involved are you/your assistants in Special Teams? Have you thought about allowing assistants to take a unit and run with it? Like a test of their ability to lead a unit? #swarmfbchat
A2: we have a ST coordinator and our HC is a ST guru. I often feel guilty that i don’t spend more time trying to help with the ST. I think having young coaches get more involved with ST would help them tremendously #swarmfbchat
A2: we have done this several different ways but I do really like having every coach having a special team group that is their focus, stc oversee all of them on game nights but each coach breaks down the film of their emphasis ST #swarmfbchat
A2: At our 1st staff meeting for 2019 we were just told that position coaches would have a specific ST assignment given to them by the HC. I’m excited about putting in a PR from where I was prior. #swarmfbchat
A2. Great Q! As HC, I have done it the past couple of years as a way to motivate the players but I would like to give some freedom to my assts to run with a unit. #swarmfbchat
A1 continued: I break down film, develop tendency reports, top runs, passes, and create scout team cards. Not only am I trying to decrease the workload for the DC, but I am learning more about both offensive and defensive schemes. Side note: I also wash laundry. #swarmfbchat
A2: I am going to have my LB coach (2 years exp) take over scout teams on Punt - to give our D (punt block/return) a look - see how he does with it! #swarmfbchat
A1: We have a manual and go over it every summer as a staff and go over then it’s just playing off of each other’s strengths within the year. #swarmfbchat
A2: We have a special teams breakout period every single day. Each assistant is in charge of something (returners, snap/hold, kicking, open field blocking, avoiding blocks). It gives everyone ownership of something. #swarmfbchat
A2: Most of our leadership is shown through the the relationships with the guys in our rooms. We definitely pair up with each SPT unit. The DB coach and I do KO. WR/RBs coaches do to KR. More eyes on the guys... Divide and conquer.. #swarmfbchat
Q2: How involved are you/your assistants in Special Teams? Have you thought about allowing assistants to take a unit and run with it? Like a test of their ability to lead a unit? #swarmfbchat
Q3: As for game planning, have you delegated tasks per position group when it comes to breaking down the upcoming opponent? DL coach = run blocking, OL weakest player.. (for example) #swarmfbchat
A2: We each coach up specific positions on each special team unit. Allows lots of coaching to happen on each unit but the idea of allowing different coaches to lead a unit is definitely intriguing. #swarmfbchat
A2: Head coach typically handles who coaches which special teams. Always asks for opinions and once a scheme is decided on each coach will have a position to coach on each special team. Has worked really well for us in the past.#swarmfbchat
A1. Meeting w/ your coaches in the offseason about creating a culture of competitiveness. I stress to each position coach to challenge their group to be the best, hardest working & most physical position group on the team. The competitive culture is contagious. #swarmfbchat
A3: I've just started coaching my young coaches how to do this - break down film from their position group. I think not only does it make them more of the plan, it allows them to really communicate to their position group more effectively #swarmfbchat
A2: HFC has Punt team, I have Punt return, DC has Kickoff, WR coach has Hands team, OL coach has Kickoff return. Has worked out well for us, so no need for STC. HFC requested me to do Punt return since I’m Coach “P” ... cliché, but we’re all on the same page! #swarmfbchat
A3: We meet and put a game plan together but need to get better in this area for sure, when it comes to delegating things specific coaches need to break down instead of me doing it all #swarmfbchat
A3: We do things like that. Our DB coach looks at WR ticks, our LB coach will look at backfield and motion items and other items with backfield action and I look at OL and all other aspects. We usually have other game specific things we’ll look at too. #swarmfbchat
Each is responsible for a piece of the breakdown. Ex: Dline coach enters all field/DD/play direction etc into hudl while I do formation and play. Helps keep the language the same. Dline coach enters run plays into script secondary coach does pass plays.#swarmfbchat
Q3: As for game planning, have you delegated tasks per position group when it comes to breaking down the upcoming opponent? DL coach = run blocking, OL weakest player.. (for example) #swarmfbchat
A3: Each coach has a piece of the puzzle. From Hudl, to scouting opponent, to scout cards, etc. We could not be successful without each and every one of our assistants. #swarmfbchat
A2: we all have specific roles working with special teams, usually it is the position hat your guys play like DBs working at Bullets and it is coached by their position coach #swarmfbchat
A3: I’m responsible for the passing game and knowing the opponent scheme and having the cards drawn up for the week. I also Helpout with ODK the film. #swarmfbchat
A3: We’ve met and have a very rough idea. Being the youngest on staff I have a lot of guys surrounding me with a ton of experience. Will be looking for as much help as possible. Especially with two little ones running around me as I’m in HUDL #swarmfbchat
A3: After film breakdown is done we break down formations. We are a multiple 3-4 so most always our fronts will be able to handle any situation thrown at it. Very confident in our fronts. #swarmfbchat
A3: Cont- might have been @rmacblue who told me when i was a young coach that is stuff goes wrong call base. If you can’t call base then your base D is not your base D. #swarmfbchat
A3. That is what I'm doing this year. Currently working on a Google Doc where coaches can add their info so we can formulate a gameplan together. #swarmfbchat
A3: We all do that during our individual film breakdown & then compare notes when we meet as a group. Sometimes doing it as individuals gives you a different perspective on things.. Then comparing notes allows us get on the same page before teaching it to the kids. #swarmfbchat
Q3: As for game planning, have you delegated tasks per position group when it comes to breaking down the upcoming opponent? DL coach = run blocking, OL weakest player.. (for example) #swarmfbchat
A3: We have a staff of three coaches. One takes ODK, D&D, hash. Another takes formation/personnel columns, DC does play and variation. Flows well and keeps your mind focusing on a certain aspect of your opponent. #swarmfbchat
Q4: What about on game days? What are your assistants doing during the play? Do they coach their position during breaks/when offense is on the field? Charting? Press Box? OR - do you even allow them to call in a portion of the plays? #swarmfbchat
A3: each position should be looking for offensive tendencies but i also expect them to help in the game plan too this means inputting breakdown and adding to the game plan meetings ex: what hurts our scheme this week? What is our best play in a scenario? #swarmfbchat
A4: relaying the calls to front seven and secondary. Making sure play call is recorded on a sheet of paper. We two platoon so we get a lot of time to review Hudl and talk to kids while offense is on the field. #swarmfbchat
A4: DB Coach is in the box and depending on gameplan is looking at certain parts of the defense. me LB coach are on field, he watches position. After series we review the sideline replay for breakdowns and get those areas coaches up for the next series. #swarmfbchat
Q4: What about on game days? What are your assistants doing during the play? Do they coach their position during breaks/when offense is on the field? Charting? Press Box? OR - do you even allow them to call in a portion of the plays? #swarmfbchat
A4: everyone has designated assignment and position down and distance and personnel come from upstairs airwaves clear during series. #noplaybyplay#swarmfbchat
A4: Our HC/DB’s coach gives suggestions. Because ur staff has O/D responsibility they are often coaching their O pos. group. I make most of subs on everything but the DB’s. #swarmfbchat
A4: During the game I’m watching my guys and Formations calling and strength. Seening if we need make a correction at halftime or can I fix something during the game. I learn to love on my guys more halfway thru the year and talk to them instead of yelling #swarmfbchat
A3: We breakdown roughly 50 columns in Hudl each coach is assigned an average of 11 columns with ones that deal with their position group keys.... DL does inside blocking scheme LB does inside run/motion DB does 7v7 routes #swarmfbchat
Q5A: What pieces of advice do we have for the young/new coach? Are there clinics to recommend? How much time do you spend meeting and coaching your coaches (film, drills, practice with purpose, etc.)? #swarmfbchat
A4: 2 in the box are telling me D&D, hash, personnel, and charting. Then giving input/reviewing between series. They can all talk to their guys if needed between series. #swarmfbchat
A3: I put all of the data in Hudl (From Defensive perspective) w/ the exception of formation, play & routes. Our DC uses different terminology and I don’t want to throw him off. Helps make more efficient reports. Plus, I learn from more experienced coaches. #swarmfbchat
Q5B: Young guys - where are you looking to improve? What are some things you have already learned in your career that you too can pass along to new coaches? #swarmfbchat
A4) I'll talk to the whole D when we 1st get to bench then position coaches talk to their guys. I ask for ideas (calls, adjustments) all the time from the other D coaches. One of our coaches checks sideline film during drives too. #swarmfbchat
A4: Box coaches give me field position yd line formation. Coaches on sideline coach their position while O is on field, we have some 2 way guys, makes it hard to get everyone together but I will tried with hudl sideline this year.#swarmfbchat
A4: We had a guy who charted where I was last coaching. He owned it & gave our DC everything. Would love to have a guy do that this season for us. I use to be in the box and I miss it. Might see what my Co-DC thoughts are on me being up there & him making calls #swarmfbchat
A4. Not sure. I'm going to 1 way coaches this year and have to figure out that portion yet. Interested in the 2 coordinator concepts mentioned by @Coach__French#swarmfbchat
A4: everybody watches their position but in addition to that- DL in the box gives D&D, personnel and watches OL, DB on sideline watches for route combos and play recognition. Frees up DC to do a little of it all and prep next call. #swarmfbchat
A1: As the DC I try to give out jobs that I think they can handle and what's best for our kids. First year guys get the tough jobs to learn and as they grow they get bigger rolls in the defense. Best advice to a young coach: dont wait for the hc/dc/oc to ask. #swarmfbchat
A4: My assistants do a great job on game night. We have 2 offensive guys on field, 2 defensive guys on the field, Special teams coordinator does all subs for those units. 3 guys in the box that talk to all 3 units. All coaches get along and no communication is great. #swarmfbchat
A5: Learn as much as you can. If you are a D coach go learn about offense at the clinics also. Sit in and see what they are doing. Visit college coaches. Many small colleges are willing to share. Keep growing. Learn! #swarmfbchat
A5A: Best advice keep it simple! Don’t get to in depth! Ensure your guys are fundamentally sound. Don’t change your EDD everyday. Learn the scheme #swarmfbchat
A5: PLEASE SHARE IDEAS. Us young guys try to soak up as much as possible. We all just want to be a great coach!! I'd love to talk to any of you experienced guys for drills, tips, etc. Also a THANK YOU in advance. #swarmfbchat
Q5A: What pieces of advice do we have for the young/new coach? Are there clinics to recommend? How much time do you spend meeting and coaching your coaches (film, drills, practice with purpose, etc.)? #swarmfbchat
A5A: visit spring practices (at all levels) and forge real relationships with coaches and staffs. Go with actual questions and be open minded to learn #swarmfbchat
A5: This is my 15th year coaching. 5th as a DC. My best advice would be to stay quiet and cerebral. Ask questions reach out to colleges through your HC and go learn. The moment we stop trying to improve is the moment we stop being impactful in the game. #swarmfbchat
A2: Break each coach into an “Expert” on a specific unit IE. KO, KOR, Punt, Field Goal. Think it creates better coaches. (Other than QB, OL coaches because I think that time is invaluable.) #swarmfbchat
A5: if you want to do this right you better absolutely love it and be motivated to work hard. You owe it to your kids and your fellow coaches to be the best version of yourself every day!
#swarmfbchat
A4: We have 1 coach on the staff in the box. Everyone else on the sideline coaching their position. We coach & adjust almost the entire time the offense is out there. Hudl Sideline on a TV helps us a lot with real time feedback. We all have signal responsibilities. #swarmfbchat
Q4: What about on game days? What are your assistants doing during the play? Do they coach their position during breaks/when offense is on the field? Charting? Press Box? OR - do you even allow them to call in a portion of the plays? #swarmfbchat
A2) When I was a Special Team Coordinator, I use the coaches strengths and put them in positions that help us be better Here is one page example, want to learn more my Drill Manuals (green one) or my Volume 3: Special Teams for more information #swarmfbchat#drillmanualimpact
A5B: It’s about the team not you. The players make the coach. Understands our havevto simplified things in order to be. Don’t try to learn more than one scheme. Stay off YouTube talk to your head man about drills. Be proficient and take ownership of your group #swarmfbchat
A5a: be willing to do anything that is asked of you! Go to clinics, talk to coaches, do the film work, sweep the floor, unlock the baseball shed, and listen and write down notes a the time! When you are corrected remember we are all after one goal. #swarmfbchat
A4. We have the corners coach up top along with the LB coach. LB coach charts plays run to see if the match tendencies. DL coach handles subs and safeties coach/DC calls plays. All have headsets. #swarmfbchat
A5: excited to hear the answers for this one! Aside from the basics (reading, film), going back and trying to scout and gameplan a past opponent (maybe one from a few years back that’s still on Hudl) as if you were DC is awesome practice. #swarmfbchat
A5. Join this chat! and others! For real, as the HC my focus is on directing my young coaches to learn. Email articles, videos, constantly send text messages asking for them to answer a question and explain why. Play devils advocate. #swarmfbchat
A5: glazier clinics, local coaches that you trust and learn as a staff, state organization, need to meet in offseason and learn from past and grow, ask them what there goals are and how you can help them get there, honest feedback will help them more than just 👍🏽#swarmfbchat
A4: All defensive coaches are on the field. DC calls play, I relay the play to my guys by being about 7-10 yds down from the LOS. LBs coach relays any blitz/fire zones. If our players don’t get the call, that’s on them. We have 3 coaches signaling &yelling the call. #swarmfbchat
A5) Come in and be willing to work and learn. Ask questions don't assume you know it and be wrong. If you don't know an answer tell the player you'll find out. Ask to do work and jump in on little jobs. #swarmfbchat
A5b: dont feel young but I'm still always learning! Biggest thing I can pass along is have a great work ethic and care about kids. Kids wont care how much you know until they know how much you care. And be tough but open! #swarmfbchat
A5a. Coach what you know. Find someone who knows more and learn from them. College guys are great but there is a local guy who has been running what you want for years and is easily accessible. Humble yourself. Make sure it’s fun for you and the kids. #swarmfbchat
A3: In a theoretical world, with a trusting/invested/adequate staff with solid delegating, this is what I would picture jobs as. Never had that opportunity yet #swarmfbchat
Before it gets too late .... Thank You for sharing tonight - I know we have a number of young guys looking for help/advice. Another awesome night of the #swarmfbchat
A5B: I need to learn more about OL. I watch #hogfbchat almost every week and take notes. Also just learning the lingo. I've learned if you will volunteer for anything/everything the coaching staff will be more comfortable with you. NEVER be late. #swarmfbchat
Q5B: Young guys - where are you looking to improve? What are some things you have already learned in your career that you too can pass along to new coaches? #swarmfbchat
If you want to be in this for the long haul I’d say you have to completely immerse yourself wherever you are, be available, prioritize how much it truly means to you to be a coach, continue to be a student of the game, and don’t worry about losing sleep. #swarmfbchat
A5: Coach different positions/sides of the ball. Research offense. Ask questions! If you’re wrong, the dc can teach and eval his process. If you’re right, you’ve made the program better. No down side to exchanging ideas that are well thought out. #swarmfbchat
A5a: Ask questions. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you don't know something.. Admit it. Coaches love to coach (hear themselves talk 😂).. Especially if it's to a young coach. @NikeCoyFootball has always been a great clinic series. We meet several times a week #swarmfbchat
Q5A: What pieces of advice do we have for the young/new coach? Are there clinics to recommend? How much time do you spend meeting and coaching your coaches (film, drills, practice with purpose, etc.)? #swarmfbchat
A3: this is an area I need to get better at! I have them breaking down areas and get some game planning ideas from them but at the end of the day I dont delegate much. This year i plan on getting more involvement in pass route/ 7 on 7 diagrams. #swarmfbchat
A1- When I was a young assistant my DC gave me alot of responsibility. Of course I was in the office every time the doors were open, making cut ups on vhs tapes and studying opponents. I was always assigned the breakdown of future playoff opponents. Now, I do it all. #swarmfbchat
Q1: How have you been able to either delegate more responsibility to your assistants OR accept/seek more responsibilities from your DC/HC as a young/new assistant coach? #swarmfbchat
A5A: soak in as much as possible, volunteer to take on as much as you can (even/especially the grunt work), coach your unit as you would your entire team: set standards, clearly communicate expectations, roles, etc., all while loving them and sharpening them. #swarmfbchat
Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” Biggest advice for anyone (old/young) is to cherish the good about today/this moment and “Make the big time where you are!” #swarmfbchat
A5: 1) Have respect for players and they’ll respect you. 2) Don’t get mad at a kid for making a mistake. Get mad about effort, but correct the mistakes. 3) Always learn from both the good and the bad you do as a coach. #swarmfbchat
A5) Be yourself & don’t be a phony. Never pass on an opportunity to learn something new. Learn the “why”? Master HULD. Learn how to draw plays;script plays. Coach on the opposite side of the ball. Coach positions you never played before. Learn how to mow. #swarmfbchat
A5: Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” Biggest advice for anyone (old/young) is to cherish the good about today/this moment and “Make the big time where you are!” #swarmfbchat
A5: keep an open mind and always work, can’t preach to your kids to always keep getting better and you take 3 months off.
If someone said you had to coach ______ position next year. What position are you least prepared to coach and what are doing to fix that? #swarmfbchat
A5) Be yourself & don’t be a phony. Never pass on an opportunity to learn something new. Learn the “why”? Master HUDL. Learn how to draw plays;script plays. Coach on the opposite side of the ball. Coach positions you never played before. Learn how to mow. #swarmfbchat
A5 cont) Be positive with players. As young coach it's easy to see the bad because your learning too. Seek the good & critique with positivity. Love your players and they'll take coaching. #swarmfbchat
I’ve got a question for the position coaches out there: what can your coordinator to do help you grow and help you improve? #swarmfbchat#SelfImprovement
A5B: Learn more about all defensive schemes and how I can culminate ideas from each into developing a defense. I also want to network with offensive coaches on here and attend clinics on both sides of the ball. To newer coaches, it’s not about the team, not you. #swarmfbchat
The worst thing you can ever do as a Coordinator is not empower your position coaches. I promise you will miss out on the cream of the crop #swarmfbchat
A5b: Self-reflect every day by writing things down in terms of what went well or what didnt, things that need done, etc..Using this to then better yourself and set goals for yourself will allow you hold yourself accountable..NEVER stop tryin to learn n improve #DMGB#swarmfbchat
A4: The D Assistant Coaches all have a formation sheet. All are on the sideline, but 1. Coach in the box gives me D&D, Formation, Field Location. I give the calls to my DL Coach & he signals. When we are on O, we watch the previous Series with the Defense on a TV. #swarmfbchat
A5 I try to meet with my guys after every practice...we went well what didn't hat do we need to do the next day..we go to clinics together..we are doing our own mini clinic next week #swarmfbchat
A5B: more specific/helpful technique for my position, game planning strategies to prep your mind and players for Friday night. Something that helped me a ton this year was creating the play cards for practice. Gets you deep into the opponent and how they run things. #swarmfbchat
A5B Cont: Always try to learn, ask questions often. No coach will be mad if you’re trying to better yourself. You won’t jump up the ranks immediately. Start from the bottom, be passionate about doing anything that needs to be done! You’re being evaluated every day. #swarmfbchat
A1 cont- Now I am shocked how many young coaches can't draw up formations and plays. Can't draw cards.Or the ever popular, I coach defense I don't know anything about https://t.co/0YcrIda7vV do you stop an offense then?I would delegate the world if... #swarmfbchat
A4: as a Defensive guy, definitely coach your position HARD on game days (even tho the outcome is usually decided way before gamedays). You better have a guy in the press box you trust! Or you’ll find out things on film Saturday morning - when it’s to late! #swarmfbchat
I actually draw the scout cards for the offense. So I draw them from an offensive perspective. That way they are looking at the card the same way they are looking at the defense. I also write out the yardage and breaks on routes, splits, etc. #swarmfbchat
A5B: still trying to learn every day. Attack weaknesses and make them strengths. You’re either getting better or getting worse. Fight against average! #swarmfbchat
A1) I learn it from Marty Schottenheimer you can’t do it all you must trust your coaches and know their strength and weakness. Show you HFC/DC that you have worth and your a hard working and be a sponge when you have to be. #swarmfbchat
A5: as a fellow Young Millennial coach, most important thing is to Learn how to create relationships with players. We should always be coaching the coaches. But young guys - Relationships and LEARN EVERYTHIN YOU CAN. Do the jobs nobody wants, they are a great mentor #swarmfbchat
Q3: As for game planning, have you delegated tasks per position group when it comes to breaking down the upcoming opponent? DL coach = run blocking, OL weakest player.. (for example) #swarmfbchat
A5a: Advice for young coaches - Build relationships with your players. Make them WANT to play for you. Make practice competitive & fun. Be willing to put the work in to be successful, it’s not easy. Technique! Technique! Technique! Be YOU! #swarmfbchat
