Hello my friend, I will see you in a little over a week. all the way https://t.co/NCij2Jf5hg
Well running a fever so hanging out. 😳 Lurking for awhile. .
A1: Workshops because it's hands on and can allow more room for experimenting and learning to FAIl & SAIL and be very production
Hi from Pittsburgh, I teach Spanish & a course, trying to keep up tonight!
A1: I'm a workshop guy all the way. It's about the people, not the programs. I love to see Ss engaged in real, authentic work
Exactly! That's about what I look like! LOL
Welcome to the chat of all chats https://t.co/uitU1fGhWA
Hi from Pittsburgh, I teach Spanish & a course, trying to keep up tonight!
Hey! Stacy from Alabama joining in:)
John Kline. Not a T. work for WeVideo and crashing the chat to learn a bit more about our k12 users. mind if I hang around?
A1 Workshop model for me: differentiation, choice, small grp, independent wk. All the best components of teaching
Given the scorecard, we can assume that just about every time T makes an assertion, it is a lie.
Come and learn my friend https://t.co/NjAdaiiQw0
John Kline. Not a T. work for WeVideo and crashing the chat to learn a bit more about our k12 users. mind if I hang around?
A1: Workshop model allows students to engage in authentic reading/writing based on choice! Ss become authors!
A1: taught both - prefer workshop for choice. Basal w/ good lit = multiple copies of everything at least.
A1: workshop model: tailor to specific student needs
Ron, TIS from Houston. Ready!
I might have a friend who could use a little more explanation if these may not have heard of these before. https://t.co/LqyD1Fdty5
Q1: Basal Reading Program vs. The Workshop Model. Which position do you support and why? What are the advantages… https://t.co/IHavnGVq8m
Mike from MD also reading the boy who would be a helicopter. Excellent read.
Q1 Workshop model forces Ts & Ss to think. Greater thinking, deeper learning
A1: I have taught Ss with both, but would love to have higher engagement and interest with a workshop.
A1: We use Readers Workshop. As says, it's about the people not the program. Love seeing the small groups in action!
Sorry missed first question.
A1- workshop all the way... do they still make basals?
Love when everyone is thinking! Basals & programs so rote = boring.
A1 cont - were req to use basal - used 4 square model/centers so Ss still had authentic experiences
Love wevideo my go to program using with 3rd graders for weather event green screen videos this week https://t.co/kP85ntiwR5
John Kline. Not a T. work for WeVideo and crashing the chat to learn a bit more about our k12 users. mind if I hang around?
A1: All about helping Ss to grow as readers/writers. Workshop allows focus on reader not the reading!
Workshop model meets more of the individual needs of a student
A1: workshop model! Hands on for me. Helps me locking into longterm learning!
A1 LOVED Reader's Workshop when I was in the classroom-seeing interests sparked & getting to know Ss on a whole new level was awesome!
yes. :( my former school uses one.
A1 Workshop. We learn to read/write by authentically reading & writing. Hands-on, interacting, wondering, strengthening skills&choice
Drew here! A high school English teacher-in-training from SC!
A1: Wksp Model 100%. Meet individual needs; have students do the 'lifting' & learning. Saw great wksp from today about it
A1: Reading workshops are great because they allow for student choice, which can be motivating and encourage love of reading
"Watch Jane run. She sees a pup." vs. "Let's select a book on your reading level and discuss what predictions you can make"
I prefer the workshop model which allows teachers to select stories to teach comprehension based upon what their students like reading
A1 I am a workshop proponent for sure. Just like a makerspace providing an area for magical discovery & a road to explore is learning
Haven't used it. Free? iPad version?
A1. Workshop - provides opportunity for more differentiation
A1: blessed with flexibility at my school - Basal program used for skills, workshop style for creativity and high level interest
A1- as a GT facilitator, most basals are below what my Ss need. Going workshop allows me to meet their level/interests/needs .
Hello my friend. You get the prize... But you knew that you would https://t.co/3ohlzykGdL
A1 Workshop. We learn to read/write by authentically reading & writing. Hands-on, interacting, wondering, strengthening skills&choice
Did you see that hit? Woohoo!
Late but here! Kristin from Lansing, MI 6th grade ELA & SS. A1) workshop model, but school has basal, so I use stories as mentor txts
Yeah! Finally! I can teach you something!!!!!!!!
No idea what basal or workshop reading are.. cool primer
A1: Def workshop model - it's more like what readers do; read, share, journal, talk about the book and repeat
Use the basal as a support and put books in their hands https://t.co/Y9nKH7ZiFo
Late but here! Kristin from Lansing, MI 6th grade ELA & SS. A1) workshop model, but school has basal, so I use stories as mentor txts
Personally find a dictated program constraining, need to be more flexible which a workshop provided
A1 In MS I make reading a communal event. Learn, laugh, gasp, & cry as a community of readers. Kids are transfixed & love reading!
woah! "Basal Reading Program vs. The Workshop Model" think I might be a bit out of my depth here...
Q1 When you need to set a foundation w/i district and trust your Ts a basal can be the stage to building and developing workshops
I'm always willing to learn!
A1: Workshopping is so much more hands-on and really allows for a great depth of personalization
Yes. Gets you started but authentic reading comes with books https://t.co/J8eZVw37t4
Q1 When you need to set a foundation w/i district and trust your Ts a basal can be the stage to building and developing workshops
Yes! Students apply ideas/skills to their own books that they choose!
A1: I am math certified but taught in a district where we were all considered reading Ts, so had 3 math classes & a reading class
A1 ...actually a Q: if so many prefer RW, why do so many districts still buy programs?
A1. Workshop model! Authenticity and S choice - lots of opportunities for kiddos to read. Readers read!
Q2: Homework vs. No homework. Why? What is your school and your district philosophy? Share your reasons. https://t.co/ye9WxK4kgE
A1: Nothing replaces workshop, but don't dismiss that some Ss need structured remediation for missed skills in early grades.
We did, bc it's easier for the Ts, not better for the Ss https://t.co/WRlIxjnY7D
A1 ...actually a Q: if so many prefer RW, why do so many districts still buy programs?
You're okay there. I watch and lurk many-a-time and learn lots!! Besides that, Q2,3,4 coming.... :)
A1 Workshop model, more options for collab, understanding Ss needs, build relatshps, work w/ indiv Ss, more engagement
The Ts HERE prefer it. Many non-tweeters would prefer a plan and texts to follow.
A1 I use basal and the 40 BooklChallenge. Stories in our basal ar pretty good. Authentic child lit. Ties in w/ my sci and S.S. too
A2: I don't but since I'm enrichment teacher it isn't something I go out of my way to do.
I do a little bit of both. It's good to balance the more direct instruction with the more creative workshop model.
Big debate right now. T book club about this currently too. As classroom T, always believed in only relevant HW
A2: I have Ss read as their HW for me
Check out tonight's chat with Reminds me of "things that suck" fac mtg!
A2: As says, we expect students to do homework, when some students barely have a home to go to. We give minimal homework
A2: If it's given, it has to be valuable, differentiated, and helpful. Not graded, but used with feedback. No Anxiety!
Ooh ooh read a book, there is mine!
Agreed. Thanks for retweeting Qs for me too https://t.co/vZt1xLghKj
A2: As says, we expect students to do homework, when some students barely have a home to go to. We give minimal homework
too late!! I figured it out on my own :)
A2: The grade level thought is no homework. Rather have my kids work in the classroom and get Ts help- then go be a kid at home.
A2. NO HW; parents end up doing more work, which means more learning for them, not Ss. All I ask is that Ss read at home.
A1 Basil Learning uses texts to teach reading while workshops are more free form & provide more options for growth-choice
A2: Yes to homework, but (1) use it in your next class meeting and (2) make it inquiry based! Inquiry allows for high self-efficacy
A2: I would argue for a happy medium of a bit of meaningful, productive homework, but no stressful, unnecessary busy work at home
A2 A short Google form here & there, reading. Nothing overwhelming. Big debate beginning to brew in my district
Q2 Whoa! This really is the great debate. Make it purposeful, make it reasonable, or make it optional
A2: Love when I see HW switched to blended/flipped. Hate when Ss go home to do work they don't understand. What's the point?
A2 Independent, free choice reading is by far the best HW. Find the right book & it's just as fun as TV or gaming. Model this in class
A2-No school/district policy. My policy - Some homework, but purposeful. Enough to practice but not frustrate/overwhelm Ss.
This surprises me. I don't like them; feel like I don't know my Ss as well as readers. And, they're usually not relevant
Yes!!! My two children came from a HW heavy school... long nights at our house! https://t.co/g1ZCxeAds3
Q2 Whoa! This really is the great debate. Make it purposeful, make it reasonable, or make it optional
Read, Read, Write, Communicate, Have family conversations-that is purposeful HOME work.
Yes! For homework, low-anxiety is the key. There may be no one at home that can help with the homework or with coping
As a librarian I love the no HW movement, encouraging Ss to choose what they read, too!
A2: IF you are going to give HW, it MUST be meaningful and authentic
I always favor balance! https://t.co/xsmeVka3uM
I do a little bit of both. It's good to balance the more direct instruction with the more creative workshop model.
Workshop approach is not neatly packaged with aligned standards that give admins confidence. Marketing prevails
Some kids need the practice but many times HW over rated.
A2) School leaves this up to Ts; Ss know I want them to read, pursue passions
A2: Maybe just reading for pleasure is a great way to reinforce learning after school... https://t.co/D3a4v0P00I
Studies show that reading for pleasure (& especially reading fiction) is far more important than we ever imagined. https://t.co/BDHIeauf7j
Schools policy-no HW Tues. My policy no HW-in class collaboration & performance tasks- but if do not finish classwork=HW
Yup. One in 7th, one 9th this year - too many ridiculous and pointless assignments already.
A2 I believe all elem grade levels have cut back-my goal is to try to get Ts to integrate flipped lessons as much as I can this yr.
I am in the no or limited homework camp. Minimal homework to practice a skill. Reading daily the minute, is my top go to.
A2: I always share that homework is not my goal. What is left from our working day becomes homework for those that need to finish.
One of my favorite school memories was when my HS math teacher allowed HW to be optional as long as we kept our "A."
A2: When I taught Spanish, the only HW Ss had was to learn the vocab, memorize verb meanings. We worked in class on using the lang.
A2- I am an enrichment teacher. Ss already have enough w/o me assigning more. My HW involves activities w/family (star watching, etc)
A2: the only kind of homework I give is to go home and look at things to visually record them by drawing it. Direct observation!
Optional scares me a little, but I am a student teacher. What do you mean by "optional"?
So frustrating from the Ps perspective....
A2: No homework! Kids need to be out and about doing other things! Playing with friends, sports, etc.🏀🎸
Hi jumping in late! Couldn't stay away from the homework question!
A2 Reading/journaling/playing/thinking/dreaming makes 4 great homework that ignites love of learning & wonder (worksheets-not so much)
A2 My homework is 2 days a week, but really what is the purpose?
I believe there is no research which proves worth of HW at elementary level, but it is useful in some cases at HS level.
especially Ps that are Ts!!
HW needs to be purposeful & relevant never busy work. If Ss can demo knowledge in other ways in class then HW should be min
This East Coast Pirate needs some sleep. Have a wonderful evening everyone!
Ss are excited about their my hour projects. Amazed how many are reading, creating at home to build/explore more. Luv S engagement
A1 Not Basal! Students may learn how to read through basal programs, but they will never experience the true joy that reading inspires!
Agreed! My classroom is flipped and my students love it!
A2 Ive focusd more on practice,Ss nd way to build skills, w/ purpose, just had commnty post on HW :)
What does math talk look like?
A2b: we still give homework but not sure what they learn from it.
A2: I have students read every night and write a few responses a week...I feel very indifferent towards hw
Q2: hw should be meaningful & engaging not worksheet one size fits all. Hw can create home connections. reading each night is a must!
Sorry, need to go. TY and for moderating
Plus when Ss don't understand, they have resources to go back to. Ps can use these resources too. So helpful!
Hey!!! Thanks for hosting while we party in Austin at 😀☠☠☠☠ https://t.co/A9QhhRAnZ8
Shout out to all my friends at Enjoy and learn my friends
definitely, enjoyed reading this!
HW would also help HS students prepare for college study style. They have to have the work ethic to work outside of class.
. Yay! Saw you were on here - glad you joined in
good evening, - Michael from Columbus, OH checking in from
Say hello to my friends down there https://t.co/5p7Zr7sGyW
good evening, - Michael from Columbus, OH checking in from
Agreed there's something to be said for the structure of it. Do we start in purposeful way at MS to prep for HS?
Exactly! That is one of the things the parents have mentioned that they appreciate.
. Feeling silly. I can't find the questions. I think I will step out for now. Have fun all!
oooh - I like this. Stealing!
Hi Michael! How was day one of
Ok changing gears, I would rather see HW that is real world application. Something that is poignant to the Ss and their career path.
As a parent - I am not a fan of the home work my kids bring home. They could be doing better things with their time. Carpe Diem
Let kids be kids and not anxious & overwhelmed by piles of HW. Sometimes it is unavoidable but it should be minimal
can't believe it has been only one day! So much learning and connecting!
Q3: Traditional PD vs. Edcamp model? Which do you like and support and why? Can you see a need for both kinds? https://t.co/hncYLQnMZ9
As a class my Ss and I pick ebook to read at home Pick day to complete thenhave book talk during lunch. Very powerful. Always excited
oh we have paid and our district is on a student data privacy crusade. Protect kids.
can I ask what book your Ts are reading?
For the most part, HW generates a neg. attitude toward school among Ss. To kids, it is about jumping through hoops and pacifying Ts.
Maybe late MS. Some kids get all the "school" they can handle during the day. College may not be in their plans.
I know when my daughter's Ts don't do this, I become good friends with Khan Academy
Important advice! https://t.co/fOPH5qlhYr
Read EVERY article about grading homework/practice/formative assessment-the answer is DON'T grade it
A3: I'm about PD, I love but is the right PD being done? That's the question, so I believe in better PD in an way.
I can retweet no worries Margie!
oldie - The End of Homework (research outdated but good springboard for discussion)
definitely at their level. Thanks for the explanation
A3: I prefer the edcamp model although I realize that sometimes PD must be targeted and specific to meet personal or district goals
I use a DI program b/c of mandates, but I "dress it up" / add movement & discussions. Still have other time for workshops
For sure! My hubby is a PhD student; kids need writing and study skill practice in HS level.
Agreed. I prefer this as well.
lately having a bit of a reaction to that word: debate.
A3 - Love the EdCamp - such a safe place to take control over your learning - it's ok to walk out, not viewed as rude
I side with Edcamp Style, it is free flowing, engaging, interactive and collaborative, everyone has a voice
Go to and look for the "pirate board" 😎
Hi ! Tisha jumping in late from SO Oregon!
Too much PD scratches teachers where they don't itch. Ed Camp model allows teachers to scratch their itch.
A3: Sometimes it's great for everyone to hear the same message, but Ts need CHOICE in PD. Balanced model is my pick
A3) Hands down: Edcamp--authentic, relevant, timely
Hey...Been meaning to give you a shout-out! Finally got your book! Love it!Can't wait to share with my peeps!
That is SWEET! Thank you!
A3 I can do some traditional PD if it is differentiated & engaging. Love EdCamp model as tailored to me. :)
a3: Love EdCamp and the flexibility of choice, but something to be said about face to face interactions.
Q3: Big problem is see with current PD is not allowing Ts to choose where they WANT to learn. Empower them to decide their PD/growth
A3: I prefer Edcamp model BUT only when Ts arrive with intent to be productive
Ben - Elementary AP from the great state of Wisconsin - jumping in late
nice can't wait to see the new stuff. Amazing how much is offered in the free version already.
I give them discussion questions to think about for the next morning meeting. Always nice to hear their thoughts from family!
A2: Just like with the Ss, Ts should have choice and voice. Sometimes we need to guide on the side but still make it inspiring
A3: No debate here. all the way. Allow Ts to drive the learning. This models what we want for Ss in the classrooms
Q3EdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCamp
A3. Honestly, never hear of - don't know what that model even is! Behind the times!
Sometimes. But only if there are sessions that hit all ability levels and topics.
100% EdCamp model. Open dialogue allows a fluid, exciting opportunity for people to collaborate.
Are you sure ? https://t.co/TOhJN3Cw3f
Q3EdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCampEdCamp
Q3: Loving the edcamp model and hope to bring it to my school! 's was the best!
Thanks! Please share your ideas & anything else with me! I'd love to talk w/ Ts who try new things from it!
That's awesome. Not all parents will do that. I think it's great when teachers can give those easily accessible resources.
A3: Haven't had the experience of PD yet, but researching, EdCamp sounds engaging!
A3- LOVE EdCamp, but also like traditional where an expert can share new ideas/cutting edge ed. I like hearing the research behind.
A3: EdCamp...recently participated in one within district and loved having choice...hmmm kids like choices too
A3 I love . It’s like natural selection. What needs to be known is learned.
is that your final answer?
Wish I were there to see it! check this out!
A1) Guided reading groups & literature circles that Ss lead, heavy emphasis on real literature
Agree that there is a time when you have to choose the PD for staff, but their time needs to be respected
Less pressure when EdCamp model, more choice & Ts &Ss really find their voice when feel connected as a group or community
right we took kids out for a couple days -Disney vacation K ss had pages and pages of work I said no wife made her do it
A3: Why not give Ts the learning experience we are expected to create for Ss!? Thanks for doing just that!
A3 Just googled Edcamp! That sounds so awesome! Much richer than traditional sit and get PD!!
A3 Encamp plz I'm an active learner who needs choice, we need to be creative in the way we share mandated info https://t.co/tXjObQNOWP
Q3: Traditional PD vs. Edcamp model? Which do you like and support and why? Can you see a need for both kinds? https://t.co/hncYLQnMZ9
A3: Completely SOLD on model for PD. Sharing / Learning from others in the thick of it is gold!
Yes, Ts know what they want and NEED to experience continuous improvement. https://t.co/Ohil7ZDqmj
Q3: Big problem is see with current PD is not allowing Ts to choose where they WANT to learn. Empower them to decide their PD/growth
I have stopped breathing for a few minutes!
A3: Prefer edcamp but only when Ts come with intent to be productive
A3Not an easy this or that Q for me-both can be personalized, passion-driven&effective when done well-which means implemented w/vision
A2) No homework, enjoy time w/ family
I love all PD. Chance to collaborate, create and learn with others. Take always to use the next class are the best!!!
A3: is a great way to learn and give teacher's voice.
I love PD in which I can get my learners out of their comfort zones. Sing, Dance, Laugh & Grow!!
A3 I see need for both, b/c sometimes need specific training but enjoy choice, auth envt, Ts lead
A3 I can also do traditional PF if leaders model as they present, not simply lecture.
A3: it depends on the information you are trying to share. This would depend on either trad. PD or edcamp
Q3 Ran Staff Conference Day Edcamp Style and feedback from Ts was over the moon. Connect, learn, and leave ready to lead
I think the personalized is the point https://t.co/KnacyNyyfy
A3Not an easy this or that Q for me-both can be personalized, passion-driven&effective when done well-which means implemented w/vision
This is truth: https://t.co/OpQDkfKx94
A3: I prefer Edcamp model BUT only when Ts arrive with intent to be productive
and if fam time isn't enjoyable, use time to pursue passion, not prove compliance
A3 Edcamp model all the way! We want to move, talk, & have choice just like r Ss:) Amazing things can happen when we get this freedom.
and come back ready to learn or more importantly to apply what you learned with your family. That bg knowledge is key
I agree. Depends on topic & my own background knowledge and interests.
A3- Drawback to EdCamp- you have a PD need/question that no one else does...
A2 Parent hat on. It gets down to respect. Is homework something Ss can relate to and apply? If not, why frustrate?
Variety is the spice of life. Mix it up as long as the PD is high quality! https://t.co/f5UNLp6CnH
A3Not an easy this or that Q for me-both can be personalized, passion-driven&effective when done well-which means implemented w/vision
There is no list of sessions when you walk in. Sessions are crowd sourced and there are no presenters. Focus on convo
was so fun and informative Amazing chance to meet new people & build my PLN among many others
edcamp seems to be a great alternative to traditional pd
A3: Need some of both.W/o some consistency & commonality, you can't build culture, BUT Ts need 2 have choice & follow interest/passion
Barbara - your PD is interactive & fun - respecting people's time & gave them a voice in what they learned
I agree. But you can't waffle. Are you a liberal or a conservative? Just kidding https://t.co/yilBqK7Ast
A3: Need some of both.W/o some consistency & commonality, you can't build culture, BUT Ts need 2 have choice & follow interest/passion
A3: Edcamp! I like that it allows teachers to lead and share. Teacher collaboration and master teachers solving real problems
A3 I am EdCamp true believer. changed so much for me. Starting to plant seeds in fellowTs for… https://t.co/hBJWV80NcB
Q3: Traditional PD vs. Edcamp model? Which do you like and support and why? Can you see a need for both kinds? https://t.co/hncYLQnMZ9
I understand. It can be tough when you're a little more isolated geographically. We run at least 4 in Chicago area
A3b: what about District ideas, that everyone needs to be on the same page with?
Listen/share/learn from others in topics that educators lead and choose. PD on the fly in a way.
Agreed. Time and place for everything https://t.co/c8SchMhSIJ
A3b: what about District ideas, that everyone needs to be on the same page with?
So grateful for the opportunity to learn this way!
yay! IT changed so much for me too:)
I wrestle with this. Doable if diff levels of understanding are addressed. Often not the case.
Getting on to late but better than not getting here at all. So almost at Q4 it seems
Agreed. Like most things... we can't get carried away and forget a happy medium
Looks like it's well put together. Love it.
Q4: Classroom point systems vs. Other classroom management systems. Which do you like best. What works best? https://t.co/ayVqdJluyO
Absolutely, I always say "Let what you learned today, brew in your head" think about it, how can you apply it
TED Talks seem like a perfect idea for PD. Interesting. Maybe just for Ss development as well?
Time and place for both. Edcamp model allows more meaningful and personalized PD for teachers.
There have been edcamp home with GHO sessions break down barriers of distance https://t.co/JuAl7qfbri
I understand. It can be tough when you're a little more isolated geographically. We run at least 4 in Chicago area
A4: I am more for XP classroom points as it let's my Ss want to 1 up their learning and innovation.
Love that idea! very perfect for a TLAP Day!
A4 model/philosophy all the way for me. Logical & empathetic.
A4: never been a fan of "caught you being good." Maybe rewards for above and beyond - not for doing what you're supposed to do.
A4: depends on age. My Kinder son loves very extrinsic, but cognitively appropriate. Older Ss, move toward Intrinsic
If I have to attend another Google classroom / tools training project ....
There is no perfect system - too many differences between Ss, Ts, and Schools - and that is a good thing!
I understand the need for a point system; some Ss need the extrinsic motivation. I always strive to teach them the intrinsic value.
For Q4, could someone let me know if points are traditionally used in HS classrooms?
Nice I planned PD once did edcamp style people loved it according to supt - never did it again https://t.co/keYosDkX76
Love TED talks, but watching Ignite sessions at ISTE & other places - I'm in love.
I use community goals & student self-monitoring, positive reinforcement & modeling. A stu-cent classroom works for me.
A4 I Don't like public systems. Not cool. Private info should stay private.
A4: I HAVE to use both! is a great tool along with a point/ticket system that leads to incentives and a classroom store!
A4: It's all about relationships. Connect with them and they'll paint the world for/with you! https://t.co/ro2Un0vEOz
A4 we have class points. We work as a team/ responsibility partners. Make mistakes together. The power of yet!
A4: one rule: "you can do anything you'd like, unless it causes a problem for someone else" no points or rewards.
I am all about restorative justice, but it works with my small class setting. Classcraft is a fun way to stay motivated in DI work
A3) EDCAMP. At any level. Have gone to several regional for networking. School level for amazing sharing, storytelling, connecting
A4) Don't use point systems; put the "class" in management; set up systems and talk w/Ss who need support. Be authentic.
A4: Do a lot with & for intrinsic skills, but also use for classroom management, communication & tracking.
A4 Neither points nor management systems seem to motivate "all" students. It is like you say, relationships are the focus
A4 No points, no names on the board, not consequence-driven. Calm & confident leadership. https://t.co/XC2t7uqX7s via
A4: Ss earn badges, XP & items in my culinary class! Ss collaborate, critically think, & are more immersed than ever before
A4: Not being in the classroom much, but I would say that you have to do what ever works best for you and your students!
A4: How do we get Ss out of the points and rewards and make it intrinsic? We need to make it about the engagement. Learn must be fun
is that PD or understanding the new initiative? And once they understand does implementation and skill development look same
Q4: there is a lesson in points. But there is a different lesson in learning soft skills for their own sake.
My name is Mackenzie Clouse, and I am a student at SMSU studying elementary education! I am here to learn something new
I will not "like" this because it happens too often!
A3 Love the un-conference model of PD because it allows choice & sharing expertise among colleagues, I take away more learning
A4. No matter what system we use, we must allow students to earn points back if they lose them by correcting their behavior.
A3) Just saw post for regional in ATL area... CANNOT WAIT
You are too kind I am not worthy of a mention in a chat!!
This has been my first experience with this model... LOVE
A4: Better to ask how did that make you feel rather than how many points did you earn. Do the right thing for the right reason.
Could someone talk about more? I've heard about it, but never seen it in action
A4: Badges & XP in my culinary class! Ss collaborate, critically think, & are more immersed than ever before
Books not basals! Have to take a minute to share my love of the books used. Use to be Wheatley now Great Minds https://t.co/hXvVAjf5ds
A4: point systems for team building, strong together, support one another. Intrinsic also to teach value in Random Acts and service
A4 I like portfolios, something that shows authentic improvement over time. Points seem arbitrary, subjective & in-natural.
A4: Developing strong Teacher-Student rapport will yield more authentic/long term classroom mngmt than good behavior for points
A4) No points, no systems, we discuss expectations, what we need to be successful together, respect ea. other from get go
I've had at least 2 classroom training sessions this year. Different departments....
Intrinsic. Classroom points tend to get students upset with the students whose behavior you are trying to work on most.
A4 Establishing culture of kindness/respect/empathy/responsibility by creating norms builds caring citizens-no stars, points, stickers
And the intrinsic starts early!
A4. I love as I can add or deduct points at anytime and anywhere! Also parents can track their child's behavior live
Ss wrote the comm goals & have taken ownership of behav & lrng I monitor behav but have very little issues. Build strong relationships
Agree, lots of power in portfolios to show progress and showcase best works
if I didn't have to Do DI, I wouldn't need a system because students would always get to pick their own projects to show skill/content
A4 - I don't mind point systems but don't like them 2 B public unless it is as a class Would T's like us 2 announce when they lose pts
Build a team with the Ss : Classroom management is more about the class than management.
I know there's 1 in Indianapolis in the summer. Otherwise, free conference & 1 hotel isn't bad price for EdCamp Chicago
behavior management (a good thing). But also authentic joy in practicing respect and self discipline (small doses & at the right time)
I don't agree with classroom point systems. Excpectations, ewards and consequences should be individualized
And I am holding my breath again...
I have had good success with the points system in Whole Brain Teaching
I have 1-min checkins weekly one-on-one this reinforces positive behavior & provides time to model self-discipline
A4: Remember that engaged students rarely act out. They are learning and having fun
A4:Other means building intrinsic skills-canned programs exclude growing Ts strengths-Leaders should push Ts to grow, just like kids.
Unless you mitigate by not emphasizing that child's behavior. Child shouldn't get multiple point loss for same thing.
I liked this idea too...until used as a school-wide bulletin board to publicize bucket-fillers.
Thought provoking! for sure!!!!
I didn't like points because I had some kids who had hard lives. Didn't want to make day harder by point shaming them
A4: I have both in my room, I do but I also have tweeting option or post its note for exit ticket. ( what they learned)
Intellectual engagement beats compliance every time! https://t.co/K8tv9sRo6X
A4: How do we get Ss out of the points and rewards and make it intrinsic? We need to make it about the engagement. Learn must be fun
My response to this is always: why do we hire Ts if we don't have confidence in them?
When Ss act out we need to look into the 'why' & look in the mirror. What can we chance to help them? https://t.co/ZeP3DCyoV2
A4: Remember that engaged students rarely act out. They are learning and having fun
You have to dance faster than an xBox or Dance Dance Revolution to keep some engaged, (Need Bunny) but worth it
Agreed https://t.co/cCRGlVVbYi
When Ss act out we need to look into the 'why' & look in the mirror. What can we chance to help them? https://t.co/ZeP3DCyoV2
A4: Remember that engaged students rarely act out. They are learning and having fun
Author Carol McCloud is an expert bucket filler and truly walks the talk!
Engage, create curiosity, have authentic, relevant learning experiences and behavior issues will be few for learning will be active.
We use as a class we work towards different stem projects. Everyone helps each other and work hard on own too
A5: I would like to have open access and teach digital literacy and respect but sometimes there is a need to start with controls and <
kicking off in about 20 minutes. https://t.co/zLTTnAm7Gi
Let's explore digital citizenship strategy tonight @ 9:00.
A5. Are we preparing them for their futures? How could open access possibly not be common place in the next 5 years?
A5 I am elementary and I am frustrated with the limited access, but somedays am grateful - a catch 22
Sometimes instead of attention it's that they're looking for! How can we connect and engage?
A point system makes me think of education as Skinner's operant conditioning model
A5- I hate our school firewall. So many great resources unavailable. But then, I see the Ss google something and I'm glad it is there.
a5: Open access - teach digital responsibility not censorship.
A5: unlimited but Ss need lots of modeling and practicing prior to independent work
We cannot expect students to pretend that google and youtube do not exist. We need to incorporate apps and tech.
A5: Tech is a tool tonight I needed a drill and said "quick, get my drill!" so my kid did. Make tools available anytime...when needed
A5 I wish for open access until proven otherwise, not the other way around.
A5: I want our Ss to have open access. We're prepping them for college so they need to learn to make good decisions on their own.
A5: Access should be graduated ... based on maturity of students.
A5: I have been very Open Access, but sadly abuse happens and its up us to teach the rights and wrongs of it.
A5: I LOVE tech, but there has to be oversight. I'm a college senior that loves school and I find myself off topic at times on tech
I feel the same about whole brain teaching! I want them to do things because they WANT to
I like teaching -book Wonder, book too for discussion, improvement, character building, value
Q4 love class dojo but praise/ rewards R better motivators than points. Love & logic. No behavior mgmt plan works 4ever, change it up
by open access do you mean not blocking SM? promoting BYOD? Im slightly confused. Like I said - much for me to learn here...
A5: Our '16 learners need to learn digital citizenshp. Entrust Ss to make right choices, correct neg. behaviors when needed.
A5: Open access vs limited access depends on student population group & expected learning outcomes
BYOD for sure use tech when purposeful & relevant but balance learning with hands on tinkering-when not in use-unseen
Always comes down to relationships! Ss know when Ts aren't genuine in their relationsihp
Nice - everyone needs balance, and that right there is a pirate on an adventure! Beautiful picture. I like the colors
This might be cynical, but I can't see trusting Ss with unlisted use of phones. Just not needed to learn to write.
Saying goodnight early, , been up since 4am - going to spend a few min with the fan before I fall asleep!
Try the library catalog .... There's gold there.
A5: It depends on what they are doing with the technology, but at some point it should be monitored.
A5. Whether it is binders or rules that have outlived their time we must care about our students' future. https://t.co/Eyx0Wneial
Where are you in Colorado?
A5: 5th grade: limited. Especially with the interwebs. Dist. makes sure kids are safe, but learning with many diff apps and programs!
A5 Technology is a tool. No need to limit access to available tools. If it enhances, extends, and engages learners, then go for it!
A5- age and maturity of Ss play a large role in open access/limited access. Got to differentiate tech too!
Don't forget information literacy. Different SES groups use internet differently
Exactly - they need supervision and guidelines like with any other tool
A5. Access to all available but only use of the tech that allows them to learn in a way that is individualized to their needs & goals!
A5 We need to start very early teaching digital citizenship & technology expectations- develop hows/whys of positive tech interactions
Not cynical, even great students will tell you they get distracted on their phones
I don't disagree with high expectations. I just think there are better ways of accountability than a point system.
A5: Internet is like a big city. Close off places Ss can visit or teach Ss how to navigate the city & find places they want to go
A5: As a student, I see both sides! It can be frustrating to not have access to certain cites, however it needs to be appropriate.
A5: Open access while teaching digital responsibility. Tech enhances creativity and inspires inquiry.
So many schools afraid open. 'Shut it down' isn't going to prepare Ss. Positive digital footprint not empty footprint
Yes! needs to begin early on
YES! There will be missteps along the way but we will learn from them. https://t.co/ym40UnnN1e
A5 We need to start very early teaching digital citizenship & technology expectations- develop hows/whys of positive tech interactions
If my students google for shoes one more time I'm going to assign a research project or a movie project around it.
Make learning interesting, challenging, and satisfying! That's when engagement happens!
When I am blocked from LinkedIn, but Facebook is open to Ts, and my link to a quiz is blocked on Ss , something's wrong
I still use World Books from the 90's and dictionaries. Ss hate it when I find info faster than Siri.
A5 In a perfect world open access would be ideal. Not a realistic expectation though.
Hey boss, thanks for joining in. Always appreciated https://t.co/LQKns2xbTt
A5: Open access while teaching digital responsibility. Tech enhances creativity and inspires inquiry.
Right on! https://t.co/7GRN6bhPBb
A5 We need to start very early teaching digital citizenship & technology expectations- develop hows/whys of positive tech interactions
A5) Tech always involves some degree of oversight but Ts need to teach Ss responsibility & digital footprint; tech is part of Ss lives
A5 From our youngest learners to our oldest, students must see that tech is powerful-- with great power comes great responsibility!
A5 I believe in modeling the real world so open access to tech in school is great but I also think kids should have tech free time!
My Yoda! As always you're right on https://t.co/olo8AB6Tci
A5 From our youngest learners to our oldest, students must see that tech is powerful-- with great power comes great responsibility!
I would like open access, but with times that access needs to be controlled. Some time we nd to unplug
A5: Digital Citizenship is near the top of my list of priorities as a HS Eng T. Smart online rhetoric is key.
Just like I don't have rulers out ALL the time in Math, we don't need tech out ALL the time - it's a tool
A5 Teach gr3. I teach them lots of tech- green screen, QR codes, popplets, blogging,Seasaw etc. They then use them in their my hour
w/out open access hard to address range of skills; yet need to consider age requirements for apps
Great insight tonight https://t.co/eBJmL8KMq0
A5: Digital Citizenship is near the top of my list of priorities as a HS Eng T. Smart online rhetoric is key.
Tech is just not necessary or anyway essential in teaching Ss to write effectively. Gets in the way of real thinking.
I would also love to see open access for ALL students no matter where they live & what their economic status is.
I still have a couple of sets. Have taught encyclopedia skills w/n the last 4 years.
A5: my vote is no to open access with 4th Grade. But..limits do cause some challenges. I link a lot through Edmodo for Ss to access
A5: I think it depends on the lvl you T. Don't want elem. lvl having access to things that are.above processing. But HS need +options
I love that analogy. Always need to remember that tech is a tool just like a ruler or a pencil.
A6: Competency based assessments. I get the need to measure growth, just measure it against yourself https://t.co/K3fPzxArON
great ?'s tonight! So sorry need to check out early
A6: Loaded question. Hard to believe those in a Twitter chat would prefer standardized tests to portfolios
A6: Portofolios!!!!! Hands down! creativity and innovation flow when Ss are given the opportunity!
Both. Just not continuously for 180d/14y
A6: portfolios offer ability to demonstrate mastery of content and media literacy
A6 Kids are so much more than scores-"smart" & "accomplished" can be defined in many ways. Portfolios enable to shine as individuals
A6 Performance assessments, portfolios, student-led conferences
I believe in open access, but with that you have to be prepared for some awkward conversations...
A6. Digital Portfolios are so powerful as they allow us to not only tell parents about their child's growth, but also to show them!
Teach Ss to be responsible citizens in life, including tech. I believe in freedom to choose tech. But first things first!
A5:How about a happy medium? Teach digital citizenship, then reteach when a Ss misstep. Know your Ss, trust your Ss… https://t.co/HbzqVTvYyn
Q5:Open Access vs. Limited Access - Do you think students should have open access to all tech available or limited… https://t.co/msTUN2Z4zQ
A5 Ss need access to but also nd skills to knw resp & approp use, create dig ftprint, we have to model it
u might find it faster in the class. But in the real world the S would because we don't carry dictionaries.
A6) Want portfolios but not my choice; Standardized testing gives numbers that evidently can measure Ts effectiveness better (sarcasm)
A doozy yes! I think high stakes standardized testing needs to go. Portfolios, CVs of learning are far more useful. 1/2
A6 Portfolios offer a way to show consistent mastery, not a one shot deal
Q6: should be a combination of std testing along w other measures. When we place all the eggs in one basket is when we have problems.
A6: no matter the assessment, one must ask "what's the purpose?" and use the data to drive instruction
There are reasons to measure against ea other too. But do we really need it every quarter?
A6 Standard testing was created to grade teachers. Very little benefit to kids. Portfolios more reflective of ability
A6: Portfolios & Competency Based all the way! It's about showing application, how we have grown, what we can DO with knowledge.
Who really cares about a grade, when I have a portfolio that sings of a Ss accomplishments not his/ her praise
A6: As a pre-service T that reads a lot of research in this area, I am really for competency and inquiry based assessment
A6 With digital portfolios it is crucial that we not only showcase the best work, but the organic and raw work. The good and the bad!
Great point. Weighing the cow before feeding it https://t.co/dFCdqwCxtj
There are reasons to measure against ea other too. But do we really need it every quarter?
Until the internet is down/power goes out, don't have access to tech, etc.
A5b: they do need more experience on diff. Platforms, bc you don't just use one kind of Os. There are a lot out there!
As long as we all understand this. Analyzing data has it's place, but that certainly isn't it.
A6: not all Ss learn the same or show what they know the same way..why test them the same? Creativity in demonstrating learning is key
standardized (or any kind of tests) for 21st century skills?
Whichever you choose you must be able to show growth over time. Standardized tests tend to be a snapshot once a year.
Yes: the "WHO" are we measuring and 'WHY" remain critical questions https://t.co/GAKNWVRsNz
A6 Standard testing was created to grade teachers. Very little benefit to kids. Portfolios more reflective of ability
That's why it's important to show them how to navigate to the appropriate places.
A6 I do love portfolios, ability to see growth, reflect, so many poss w but still need purpose for it
A6 love digital portfolios. Use Seasaw. Shows better picture of Ss than any standardized test ever could.
Maybe since NCLB, but I don't think Ts depended on how I did on Iowas when I was 8. Or did they?
A6) Digital Portfolios, Ss get kick out of seeing their growth, so meaningful, sense of pride & great motivator, reflection too
True, but my Ss will understand that not all information is online. There are other options. Check facts.
A6 Given diversity of nature, nurture & environment standardized anything seems wrong. Portfolios & improvement over time better..
when I think about the tests I face in my worklife - no school test prepared me at all! Not that we dump them all - but a disconnect
A6 Portfolios show individualized growth & learning, it's the direction towards a better educational system-make it personal!
but must be age appropriate https://t.co/May3b0h6Kh
A5: unlimited but Ss need lots of modeling and practicing prior to independent work
And that snapshot for many represents socio-economic status & not much more
and other tools such as google docs allows Ss to collect & display their learning
BOOM! https://t.co/7tIE8c2duW
A6 Portfolios show individualized growth & learning, it's the direction towards a better educational system-make it personal!
A6: We spend all year teaching writing process, then give 46 min to construct a response...Never understood it. Portfolio all the way!
A6: are you not pirates? How would a pirate answer this questions?
A5 tech is only as good as the teacher using it.
A6: Q for HS Ts- portfolios per a unit? Or larger? All year?
The things we teach them will not keep them from social media. I get that it is addictive, but I don't need to make time for it.
Precisely! The tests don't measure writing as a process
A6: Portfolios allows the student to possibly more freedom, choices, maybe even better results and consistency from students.
Agreed. Unfortunately, accountability measures are in place for a reason.
A6: Standardized provides quick, clean, comparative, "teacher toolbelt" results. Portfolios - ongoing, unique, subjective, meaningful
Better yet, over the course of the full high school experience
I've been following the tech/elec outages along GA/SC coast (going on day 3)
A5: love having more flexibility and freedom for Ss with tech...they have so much to share with us and w/expectations laid out = 👍🏽
A7 I will be sure I explicitly teach what I expect and differentiate along the way. Got to be on my toes!
Ss should be submitting to portfolios throughout the year & over 4 yr period.
A6. I use a template in google slides to show growth for my 1st graders so the portfolio can be shared and continued from year to year
A7: Tomorrow, i show them how they can be in charge of their own learning and what is possible.
I have no doubts https://t.co/tRLcPmVPo7
A7 I will be sure I explicitly teach what I expect and differentiate along the way. Got to be on my toes!
Do standardized tests really measure "teacher toolbelt"?
year long portfolio with hopes of passing on to next year e.g. Spanish 1 to 2
yes, the tech is out, now what? Great lesson for kids and adults
Thanks to & the crew for tonight! And..."Get Down" is being played by the band at right now. !
A7: I will be compassionate, kind, and build relationships with Ss! Morning meeting will be essential to starting the day right!
A7: Each day is a new opportunity to show a child we care, encourage curiosity, & challenge them to do their best.
To teach my students how to think not science, that way they are independent, engaged, and true explorers of science
So sad I missed out hanging with my peeps tonight. I literally just stepped foot in my house. Now=I'll stalk… https://t.co/EFv1G5AnBf
I will have lunch with some students & get into a few classrooms
Oh no, I can only imagine https://t.co/pTaTxu6eKE
Thanks to & the crew for tonight! And..."Get Down" is being played by the band at right now. !
Are they submitting vs creating the portfolios
A7 Keeping my clients first every step of the way. My clients are students so I have to build rapport with them.
A7: Accept them and love them for who they are. Make them feel appreciated and cared for. Be their biggest cheerleader!
A7: do less talking and more listening..my Ss have so much to share and so much they can teach ME
And I struggle with this. What needs to go or stay? Why teach advanced math when computers can do lots
Thanks for hosting tonight. Great ?s! Nice job!
A7) Can't take credit for the plan, but tomorrow is "Film festival day" across gr 6-8. We watch Akeelah and the Bee & discuss/write
Keep asking: Is this what is best for Ss? Are they engaged? How can I make their experiences more authentic?
Thanks for hosting a great chat tonight! Great questions and excellent discussion!
They should be submitting to an online portfolio & creating how that portfolio looks.
Bigger problems than HW, dictionaries, encyclopedias. They can't hide behind devices.
A7 I'm going to be ready to meet them at their level, to give them all of me, let them , , and them be kids
Thank you for joining and retweeting my friend https://t.co/RLZ616X61y
Thanks for hosting a great chat tonight! Great questions and excellent discussion!
Dancing like a pirate Dave? Video pls 😊😂
A7: A general s/o to and all the other Ts for being a great resource for this pre-service teacher tonight! I'll be back!
Thanks for steering the ship tonight Awesome Questions!
Can you share an example? I'd love to duplicate it in my library
In a way that I look at scores for overall trends in a year & places that may need attention. Skills & mini lessons, etc
Listen & learn from my Ss too. Let my Ss be the actors on their own stage allow them choice, leadership roles, and a voice
what a great talk. I thought the was amazing today - the pirates here just might have outdone them. maybe a tie.
Used the book in one of my college classes! It really opened inspired me to be more creative in the classroom!
Every advancement will lead to the same discussion. Remember "why learn to add when we have calculators?:
A7: Give them a high five and let them know that I believe in them. Also, model being passionate & going big, even if I struggle.
Thank you Jay Billy for an engaging & insightful chat!
great question! I think you have to teach Ss how and why most importantly!
A6Tomorrow I will try 2 listen attentively, choose my words carefully, encourage a range of questions 2 cultivate curiosity & learn more
I often run 45 minute S led discussions. All I do is monitor flow. Would love to give that job to Ss too.
