Hi . Amy from CT joining for the first time
A1. Yes, it is important to include the arts in core classes
A1: I'm an K-6 admin, but our teachers are really working on cross-content integration.
Don't forget the tag when you reply.
A1 I teach annotation, math, + science concepts in .
A1) In general, I try to integrate electives into our core classroom. Mainly art and music.
Don't be afraid to chime in. Everyone is welcome.
A1 I try in integrate Art & Music. But in general I think mostly electives are separate. https://t.co/2XW0obwOTW
Q1: In general do you try to integrate electives into your core classroom and visa versa? We will get specific later.
A1: our elective teachers do a lot not collaborative projects w core classrooms https://t.co/pxnADhGGgH
Q1: In general do you try to integrate electives into your core classroom and visa versa? We will get specific later.
Hi I'm an elementary drama teacher. A1 we are always trying to finds ways to integrate arts with the core
A1 schools I work with try new ideas in electives then transfer them to the classroom
are we talking electives or specials
sorry, off topic..what chat client do ya'll use? Participate is not playing nice today.
A1: Yes, if possible. Integration makes for a deeper, more authentic learning experience!
Ss perform skits a lot for me in science.
elective (7-12) specials (K-6) art pe music etc.
hello from Wyoming . Brant, MS Principal
A1: having taught business & comp sci electives before this year we try to integrate through diff projects
Q2: How can we add & into the core classroom?
A1 - must look to do so as the benefits of cross-curricular work have been researched and proven
A1 Hope classroom trs incorporate some type of movement in class. Sitting 4r long periods of time is NOT academically productive
Hey all! Joining a little late tonight. Mike West here from NC
Hey prospective teacher here at excited to learn about tech. in the classroom
A1 art and music build creativity in assignments. Without them we are teaching to the whole child
A2: I use a lot of TPR and WBT to get more activity in. I also incorporated with math and science.
Hi, Kacey from Hawaii. A1: Yes, our school def tries to integrate as much as possible.
A2: Add PE/Nutrition into core classroom through integrated PBL unit planning. Be purposeful.
A2. Having Active Classrooms with brain breaks, changing our learning environment space such as adding standing & bicycle desks
A2 Have students move to an answer on the wall instead of answer on a piece of paper.
A2 science- health and human body discuss movement, muscles, cardio, respiration/breathing, exercise in space
Same here.... Starting our 1:1 with a couple of grades... Exciting time!
I try to bring more in all the time.
A2) We can have cross curricular lessons that incorporate physed and healthed
A2 Create scavenger hunts with your content. Fresh air, movement, + your content. WIN, WIN, WIN.
We do a morning dance/workout before school starts to help encourage kids to get to school on time. They love it!
A2: Get students up & moving! Use games as part of learning process. topics cross most content https://t.co/KpqlkGKjKZ
Q2: How can we add & into the core classroom?
I am incorporating standing desks & exercise for brain breaks
gotta love for incorporating more movement.
Great way to start day. Prepping the brain for learning.
A2 if students aren't eating the right things, their brains will not better ready to learn
A2: Take kids OUTSIDE (which kinda reminds me of what a might be!)
Yes we use QR codes & Ss walk around school for clues.
A2: could also try treadmill desks like they have @ Google!
A2 being out of the seats get blood flowing to their brains and fingers. Chase those Zs away
A2: Most of our integration comes in the form of large scale field trips or wellness days. Looking for those every day ideas.
They should be eating tacos right? https://t.co/YGHMp5HVxc
A2 if students aren't eating the right things, their brains will not better ready to learn
https://t.co/n7HrdyYM4L
I teach k-5 we play it over the intercom before announcements. It's great to see kids "running" to class to dance and work out
Talk a lot about healthy eating
A2 encouraging students to bring water bottles to class! And practicing what we preach
You mean hot cheetos are not a suitable breakfast?
Q3: How do you incorporate music into the classroom
Nothing but water at our school. Water bottles allowed and in class.
A3: How DON'T I is a better question. Audio cues, brain breaks, mood setting, rapping for learning...
A2 Think of your entire campus as your classroom. Take advantage of all the areas/spaces available.
A3. Having the students create/write lyrics/song to show what they know. Using Garageband or other apps to enhance projects.
A1: We must integrate VAPA into core subjects for equity, lest students in ELD/intervention lack opportunity for "electives"
A3) We do classroom musical plays with
That's one way we incorporate music
A3 Use music as ss come in that motivates, soft music when working independently, + classroom management.
A3 in math class, playing instrumental music while Ss are problem solving alone, or working on projects in groups
A3: Often heard in my classroom: "you betta check yourself before you wreck yourself"
A3: we do a ton of fractions with music reading. We also use our musical theatre play to help with reading comprehension
Music to help concentrate-classical, groove songs for brainbreaks & stations Ss also write raps & songs to demo lrng
A3: also used music for history; during Ruby Bridges unit, we talked about music of that era, etc.
Sometimes when I have kids read aloud something pretty profound, I like to put epic soundtrack music on low as they read :)
Me: Our school is off to a good start!
drops Q2 & Q3
Me: retreats to my happy place. https://t.co/Rm4RNo5aYB
Q3: How do you incorporate music into the classroom
When I needed to get their attention, I would say "stop" and they would say "collaborate and listen."
A3: Reading music notation requires understanding of fractions, allows students to experience math visually, through listening.
A3 and we play music while we build. Music stimulates thoughts
A3: Used music to get my autistic step bro to speak & cont to use to teach him math facts, etc https://t.co/YVIGnnUqco
Q3: How do you incorporate music into the classroom
A3: Play classical anytime possible w/out words. I stream up to 6hrs of Bach from YouTube. (Hi from NorCal. I'm late)
We use upbeat music for the makerspace time gets creative juices flowing
I want to do this in my future classrooms! Is this ever a distraction?
I teach all and have used it in all as long as you teach the expectations.
A3: Flocabulary is a cool way to bring in music. That and create jingles/songs/raps for content taught. We rap when rounding.
A3: Music lyrics can be analyzed by students to enhance understanding of literary elements in an engaging way.
A3: we used a lot of , and new Company.
A3 rapping book reports is always a winner
Mark the space. Look to the right. 4 or less are out of sight. 5 or up will buy 1 more before they too are out the door...
In those empty right hand spaces, zeroes keep the proper places...ONLY for whole numbers.
Reach the kids where they are! Music can bridge gaps and break barriers.
I find some old school will smith gets their brain moving
my kids love flowcabulay. They are always singing/rapping the songs
A3: Music is played during breaks, students add music to slide presentations, Project GLAD songs to teach various concepts
Um...Hamilton? Teaching history? Rap works. :)
A3: We have a strong music program, but again most of our integration is large scale...concerts, musicals, etc.
. I don't stream classical during direct instruction. All other times...yes.
A2: S inquiry lab on and feedback loops via an exercise; include nutrition within unit.
A3 I play 's new award winning songs from his new album"cool math fact for the playground"
Q4: do you incorporate drama or storytelling in your classroom?
what musical are you doing this year? We just started integrating using the musical? We are doing seussical
A4) Students love performing during our class plays. Read alouds offer opportunities as well.
A4 how are you not using storytelling? Really how are you not?
A2: Frisbees. Take walks to break up instruction cycle & have Ss toss frisbees. I've heard Finland 15:45 activity:learning time
A4: For 3rd grade we did Reader's Theater of Skippyjon Jones, and ToonTastic to teach story arcs.
Yes ABBA I am a 70's kid man. Ooh and ASIA & Reo Speedwagon and Journey
A4: Noticing a trend... is clearly having fun challenging me from across the twittersphere. https://t.co/Sy1itzA68v
Q4: do you incorporate drama or storytelling in your classroom?
But I do mon amie. I was asking the crowd. :-)
A4. Storytelling is another way they can show what they know. Readers Theater and having the students make commercials too.
A4: I am fairly dramatic, yes. Ss have written and performed monologues, play scripts, stand up comedy routines for .
A4 I'm at a school of the arts ... so yes ... and it is encouraged by admin ... what else are u2 do with the drama queens
A1 Allow ss to create movements for specific learning concepts. Embeds learning. Sorry just remembered
A4 Is it possible to do a debate in mathematics? Would love to see Ss talking math literacy!
A4: Storytelling must be part of daily routine w/T's telling &/or materials used. Check out Story of Science by
Not Journey!! For the love of all things holy
A4: Actually being in the MS, drama is one things we have plenty of...in all classes :)
Q4 I often have the Ss move the desk and read and act out the stories aloud as a large group or broken into smaller groups.
Podcast story telling, I read a lot of children's books to my class. We are writing them now on Cells. https://t.co/5KDt0c7VrS
Q4: do you incorporate drama or storytelling in your classroom?
A4: Allof our plays integrate reading/history. My ss write math scripts for word problems &monologues based on history/reading
I was browbeating those who aren't using storytelling
. Math debates over most efficient method is a great way to get this started.
LOL!! Don't stop believin'!
Ss will make a video of their cell books this week-puppet show or play about their story.
actually used Hanging Tree (Hunger Games) when talking about Appalachia Ballads
I used , PuppetPals, and we made iMovie Trailers.
A4: Getting Ss to use narrative writing/storytelling for subjects studied is good stretch, too. Ts should model what they want.
A4 In we have ss depict life scenarios + decision making skills.
A4: We do readers theater to teach character analysis and point of view.
Of course I tell stories about me all the time.
About when you were the Dancing Queen? ;-)
A4: Infographics are an alternate way to tell stories using data & words. Here's a design sheet I made. https://t.co/lEISTtmwFw
But we're not supposed to read stories anymore .... that's so 20th Century.
I hear our ELA teachers reading aloud all the time.
. BOOO! Read aloud is a GREAT thing to do. Model prosody & selecting good lit.
Yep!! And Fernando! Ooh and Mamma Mia here we go again my my...
Whew. (So do I but I heard some districts prefer their libraries don't hold story times ....)
A4 all the time. Video and graphic novels
. This is a treasure trove! Thanks for sharing!
Stop Motion Video one of my favorites.
Q5: How do you incorporate computer sci into your classroom? NOT TECH.
Could you explain the difference between comp sci and tech?
I see comp sci and tech as in the same family.
A5) We have done some coding activities
Programming / coding not using computers, tablets etc into the classroom.
A5: Getting Ss using has been great hands-on, practical experience w/coding widgets.
A5: YES..before using Dot and Dash, we modeled it using tiles in the classroom.
A5: with makerspaces & computational thinking https://t.co/0rDs24ePyq
Q5: How do you incorporate computer sci into your classroom? NOT TECH.
Q5a I guess we could include creating websites in the discussion.
A5: One T made a grid on playground, Ss had to "code" how to get from Point A to Point B.
I haven't yet but I think using hopscotch to create a video game based on a story would be fun. I also want to try ss websites
Anyone use in their classroom?
A5: We have 2 different STEM classes with several modules the kids rotate through. Also Lego robotics...very popular stuff.
Used ! Amazing what it did for problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking.
wow this is awesome! What class is this?
A5 comp sci is the language to describe math and science
I have had my PK Ss record themselves reading or acting in front of green screen.
A5: raspberry pi, little bits, Lego robots, sphero, makey makey, cubelets, Minecraft, arduino
A5 program Lego robotics, simple coding need to bring more into my makerspace stuff
PK also has presented research in front of camera.
We use to code our drones
Q6: Now to the easy one. How do you incorporate art? 2-D, 3-D and/or digital?
Make them a star ... Or a stagehand.
A6: Ss can demonstrate learning anyway they want. They can use art to show what they know.
Q6a: We have students build websites as digital portfolio and multi disciplinary midterm project
makerspace create 3D cells, organs, art- sketch notes, create comics & children's picture books, playdoh https://t.co/yVepxhbBA9
Q6: Now to the easy one. How do you incorporate art? 2-D, 3-D and/or digital?
A6 I have students write their own fables then create masks to present with. Also all the props, sets costumes for plays
A6: Design thinking, building websites https://t.co/N7vBGIPPgQ
Q6: Now to the easy one. How do you incorporate art? 2-D, 3-D and/or digital?
Ss always have a choice to draw or create model. Video or podcast. Write or draw a diagram. Makerspace is full of supp
Research is starting to show the reason why Ss can't sit still is that they can't physically do it. https://t.co/ns6OmQgOp9
Bravo to Ts who give Ss choice! Best thing EVER.
Ss use blog to post podcasts & bids also for online portfolio
A6: Makerspace is in our near future :)
A5: Sheets has a lot of cool "coding" options for working with data from , such as for Hardy-Weinberg modeling.
Q7 Coming up soon and 's topic for next week.
Q6 Art T & I taking Ss to Rose O'Neil Museum. (Kwepie dolls) Artist & sufferage leader. Ss making political posters & speeches.
Student-centered, Blended, flexible seating classroom best choice I ever made
A6 Had ss use mag pics to document learning, then collaborate to make a piece of art to explain learning. We had a blast!!
Ozobots, this year squishy circuits and conductive materials ... movies, coding in the library.
Only 10 minutes until with
Hope to see our friends from and more...
A6: I say, "Here's what the content needs to be, how you deliver it is up to you." I get some great 2D, 3D and digital products!
Q7: Do you have any take aways from tonight's chat? topic will release in 4 minutes.
I do with makey makey and other projects
A6: I got an Ohlone Village out of Minecraft. Ss did way more work than I would have ask for..and learned tons.
Don't worry. Our wheels are already in motion...I just have to be patient (not my strongsuit). https://t.co/YIGbCZt77z
also have a few more robots too. https://t.co/XRctawT0bv
Planning on introducing my elementary students to Raspberry Pi and like cubelets but different. Have Sphero
A7 More computer science integration. Great ideas!
A7 All content can be integrated + its important to do so. SS need to see all learning is connected.
A6 most projects I do have sketching or some other art component to them
I want to add minecraft ... only have iPads
Ss did it at home. Mom said he was researching and building for hours. 3rd grade.
A7 I really think I want to try ss digital portfolio and websites. It seems like a great way to combine all the arts and core
I heard that next week's topic will be Big Brother related
can be a great way to start that. Easy, too.
Might have to teach my Ss how to code Google
A7 most important is all subjects-core & electives should be integrated for Ss. Together synthesize into whole brain learning.
That would be fun, I decided if I could have another career it would be to make BB Games
I am trying this year as a digital portfolio option.
Thank you for joining tonight! Join us next week as we discuss Fostering Creativity with and I. Sunday :00pm EST.
A7: I learned that these are my kind of people. I'll be back :) Thanks for moderating
Thank you insightful & innovate ideas as always!
I can't wait for "summer" to be over and Big Brother and all the Bachelor programs disappear.
Thank you David for poignant & relevant questions.
Jill and I are super BB fans
