It is indeed - I'm popping in some relevant links to tonight's #edchatie discussion on "GDPR for Schools" to pass the time ;-)

  • fboss May 28 @ 3:54 PM EDT
My understanding is that it's staying at 13 now #edchatie

Can't make it out Fred to be honest .... justice committee said 13 but then the Dáil voted to change ? #edchatie

  • colinjwhyte May 28 @ 3:58 PM EDT
Thats a good start alright. We are trying to make it relevant to teachers in a classroom situation, rather than the very (necessary) technical language. #edchatie

Thanks Martyn - I was hunting it down bit by bit but couldn't locate the final decision. So, 16 = the Digital Age of Consent #edchatie

I wrote a blog about it last week - and why, in practice, setting it at 16 is merely symbolic #edchatie https://t.co/ROI6QAvsQK

  • GoStressbusterz May 28 @ 4:02 PM EDT
16 it is .... there was a lot of debate in early / mid- May. Some interesting arguments to retain 13 when you dig under the surface. Strong links to GDPR too #edchatie

Just saw on the DOJ website that the digital age of consent can be reviewed after 3 of years https://t.co/QveD7mwkmJ #edchatie
  • fboss May 28 @ 4:10 PM EDT
Just read your blog now - does it mean that once a parent gives consent then technically their info is tied to their child's = more info for facebook, etc..? Agree with need for "Privacy by Design" from the start and "Education" #edchatie

This website GDPR4Schools https://t.co/oHngBPQFtO has been set up by the management bodies working together and looks to be a good start. #edchatie

Kate Urell- first time on #edchatie we had to disband the teachers' WhatsApp group due to the new regulations which was very handy when I ran the mock exams.

  • colinjwhyte May 28 @ 4:13 PM EDT
Not just at that point yet George. Still gathering information. Initial work on identifying key staff in school that will need specific guidance as well as normal teachers. #gdpr #minefield #edchatie

But to be fair, ads for alcohol are readily available on TV and (I could be wrong here as I don't frequent sporting venues) at most sports venues. They could be safer looking at their phones ;-) #edchatie

#edchatie Possible (probable) hassle from teachers using their own devices in the classroom when not provided by the school...

#edchatie good wake up call. Teachers need to get comfortable with encryption. BTW losing a teacher journal will need to be reported as a breach.
  • miriambergin May 28 @ 4:20 PM EDT
#edchatie Miriam PP tchr, am lurking tonight as don’t know enough about GDPR https://t.co/jLiEd762Ba. This is our info on ETB website

Late to the chat but there seems to be a lot of good talk here about GDPR. Have many schools appointed someone to head this up? Or has it just been BOM/principal? #edchatie
  • conpower May 28 @ 4:22 PM EDT
#edchatie Organisation has an on us to be aware of BYOD use and what data is on it and how used. Chromebooks a good option for G Suite schools as they are encrypted as standard.
    In reply to @colinjwhyte
  • colinjwhyte May 28 @ 4:23 PM EDT
Both Staff nominees on the committee and we will appoint other staff. Role of DPO shouldn't really be the Principal afaik #edchatie

We will need a few extra shredders now! Also how can we encrypt files? Is google classroom viable to communicate with sts and parents now? @conpower @fboss #edchatie

Don't see it as an issue if data is not downloaded. Cache will be encrypted. Cloud is probably the easiest way to deal with it. #edchatie

Is there an issue using @VSwareHQ or other MIS on a personal device to complete registers/access data by any chance? #edchatie

  • GoStressbusterz May 28 @ 4:25 PM EDT
Does that depend on who the school/management body has an agreement with ? #edchatie

We're into the famous final five minutes of tonight's #edchatie discussion about "GDPR and Schools". Any last words/thoughts/solutions or helpful links?

  • conpower May 28 @ 4:26 PM EDT
#edchatie Full disk encryption like bitlocker or if using USB encrypt the drive or use something like veracrypt to create encrypted container. Chromebooks are already encrypted.

    In reply to @gavinobriain
  • conpower May 28 @ 4:28 PM EDT
I don't believe there is any issue there. They are all GDPR compliant under normal useage. Unless users are doing something unintented like downloading lists grades etc and not securing said data. #edchatie

  • gavinobriain May 28 @ 4:28 PM EDT
I’ve been told (although I’m no expert) that personal devices accessing school data was an issue. Hopefully common sense can prevail with this though #edchatie

It may or may not be depending on the system and what exactly is being done. #edchatie
