It may take a while but what I learned was, as long as you show up to the Oline meeting room with either pizza or BBQ, someone will be willing to teach u some stuff #hogfbchat
#A1) short term goal is to master the basic concepts of the position (QBs) , & long term goal is to master front/alignment/coverage identification as a position group. #HOGFBCHAT
A1: We start with zone, because our offense is centered around it, we build our protections and play actions off of it. Also, it’s tough to run gap schemes the 1st 3 days in helmets. #hogfbchat
A1: I generally start with whatever the base run play is. For our team it’s going to be IZ. So I’ll HAMMER IZ into their heads so they know it forwards and backwards. All 5 will know each person’s responsibility and footwork. #hogfbchat
A1) Gap. In my opinion has better answers for slants and blitzes. Its what we hang our hat on and for us it’s a more physical run style. Sets the tone early for us. #HogFBChat
Mathew Bennett, OL coach/Run Game Coordinator at Woodmont High School in Greenville, South Carolina #hogfbchat been emailing those college coaches like Kermit here
A1: Zone because that’s what we hang our hat on. Most of our RPOs are based on zone schemes. Started spring last week and ran IZ for two days, it was beautiful!!!
#hogfbchat
A1) we always start with zone(rarely use gap). I feel like it’s a more natural progression to practice fundamentals and has less “if-then’s” #hogfbchat
A1) In college everything was centered around IZ & Power so those were the first things we learned. That’s how I taught it until this year when I was a part of a zone offense that operated outside-in. We taught the WZ first & I’m slowly warming up to that methodology. #hogfbchat
A1) Get with the OC and see which he thinks he wants to run more and install that first, if you find out you’re better at the other one then use it and scrap the other. #hogfbchat
#HogFBChat A1 we have always done zone first because it's more abstract and we can install it during spring/summer when there's more time to chalk & take things slow. It's also been our base (OZ for jet sweep)
A1: I prefer to start with gap scheme first as the playside double team is so important to get those 2 OL working together. Also have to see who can pull and kickout or lead up on the LB. I prefer to keep zone as simple as possible and complimentary. #mtzmade#hogfbchat
A1: always taught IZ first, but if the situation dictates, I’m all about teaching some gap schemes. As with any other questions with Offense. What are your kids better at? #hogfbchat
A1: Depends on where the emphasis is. I believe we’ll be hanging our hat on zone, so I’m sure the zone is taught first. Make sure they do that well first and foremost. #hogfbchat
A1: Typically we start with zone and get down the stance, feet, posture, and tracks. This year we are using a different approach by working the Gap scheme first. Stance, Down, Double, and Skip pulls. #hogfbchat
A1: Zone first, because the technique used for double teams and wash downs in zone carry over to power, power read, and counter. Zone has to be an answer for defenses that slant and move. #hogfbchat
So underrated.
“Dags, what’s a dag?”
“You know small, fluffy thing you pet.”
“Ohhhh, DOGS. Yeah, I like dogs.”
“Yeah, dags, that’s what I said.”
#hogfbchat
A1-I always teach gaps and understanding where the gaps are, but zone runs allow for the gaps to move so the players need to understand that. Always trusting their back to “make you right” based on movement. #HogFBChat
A1) cont…teaching zone vs gap in what order would all be predicated on what’s ran the most in my mind. If you’re primarily zone but still use Power/Gap schemes situationally then teach it as such. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Get the bread and butter down first! #hogfbchat
A1: Both. Kids learn best by making mistakes and fixing them with more repetitions. I teach em both first day, but if you put a gun to my head, I'd take Gap every weekday and twice on the weekends. #hogfbchat
A1: I teach zone on Day 1, Gap on Day 2... then keep moving forward from there. Tweaked the 3 day install in to a 2 day install that we repeat 2x each week. #hogfbchat
A1) in our offense, we teach both early.
Progression Run Game : stretch, trap, power , iso, counter, iz
Profession Pass Game: slip screen, quick game (west coast) , drop back (5 step)
#HOGFBCHAT
A1: (cont.) can certainly see why some schemes could be taught first though. Really nail down combo work, technique in combos, stressing footwork, hand placement, etc... Zone schemes are great for working technique and communication upfront. #hogfbchat
Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat@BrennanMarion4
Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat@BrennanMarion4
QBs are expected to know our playbook inside out from OL run game blocking assignments to WR passing game concepts.
They are asked to draw on the board early & often. Everything from defensive front alignments , linebacker alignment , to secondary alignment.
A2: We have used it less and less. I still think it has its place as a change of pace play out of the gun but we get the same thing with veer and belly. #hogfbchat
A2: HELL YES WE HAVE TRAP! I won’t be an OL coach for an offense that doesn’t have it. You can always trap a DE or DT that think they have free reign in the backfield. #hogfbchat
Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat@BrennanMarion4
A2. Yes and Yes!!!!! Spread em out and trap all day! Love to go empty and run 10/11 trap. Trap is still a great play! Even against a disciplined D-line. #HogFBChat
Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat@BrennanMarion4
A2: absolutely, With 3 tech lineman being very aggressive for a pass rush, they tend to fly up field on run plays. Then wham that guard comes out of no where and runs for a TD and the OC looks like the smartest person in the stadium #hogfbchat
Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat@BrennanMarion4
A2) Yes, saw it a bunch when I studied the Giants 2 years ago. Was a great 11p change up for them after running 1 back power. We still run trap to FB, our change up against a good 3 tech that we double on power. #HogFBChat
A2: we still have it. Has been a big hitter at times, but I don’t think you can run it all the time. Although did run it every other play in state semifinal one year. 🤷♂️ #DTComeUpfield#RunItTillTheyStopIt#hogfbchat
A2: I think the trap is excellent if we know how to execute and when to call it. We started last season without one and it was my first addition because I just felt empty inside like I was missing some OOMPH!
A2: Absolutely. Partly because the way DL are taught to play vs. zone scheme. Not to many 3-tech can or even have been taught to take on a trap. It's hands down one of my favorite plays to run.
Then wham that guard comes out of no where to blast him and the RB runs for a long TD and the OC looks like the smartest person in the stadium #hogfbchat
A1: Last year we started with Gap schemes this year we are starting with Zone. I believe we started with Gap trying to make it an easy transition for the kids. If we could do it again we would have started with Zone. #hogfbchat
A2. One of our bread and butter plays! One of two base runs for our FB we have had tons of success with it, couple 1000 yd rushers at the posotion. Couldn't imagine our O without it. #hogfbchat
Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat@BrennanMarion4
A2: I think a well timed, properly executed trap is about as good looking as it gets... That being said, we don’t run a whole bunch of it. Have had a tough time making it fit what we do, even tougher to add when we ran Power/counter and IZ/OZ schemes as well as we did. #hogfbchat
A2 we have multiple traps in our offense that we put in based on front and defensive personnel. We will always go into a game with a trap in the game plan. Every dlineman has a plan until they get trapped #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat BrennanMarion4
A2-I feel the game has changed so much from a run first to pass first. So trap has taken a back seat. We actually will run zone with a tag telling a lineman to not block someone and the FB trapping the DLiine while running an RPO. Totally confuses the DL. #HogFBChat
Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat@BrennanMarion4
A2) Absolutely! However in a primarily zone offense there are ways to utilize backfield action post snap with H-backs and Y’s in off to simulate counter. Helps add a hat playside while still during up the backend for the cutback on IZ. #hogfbchat
A2: Trap will always have merit as long as I’m coaching. I love being able to take advantage of defenses that take defenders out of the box. #hogfbchat
I think it still has a place but I think if you're straight shotgun, which I've been for about 15 years I don't think the timing is as good. #hogfbchat
Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat@BrennanMarion4
It really depends on who you are playing against. In AA if they have a strong PR D-line that likes to get upfield then definitely. If they are going past the guards heels then it’s time to run trap and blow them up #HogFBChat
A2: just was listening to @PressTaylor on the @RunThePower podcast talk about the merit of tackle trap during their Super Bowl winning season so I’m going to say YES #HogFBChat
A2: it is a great play on paper and no doubt it works at every level of football, but i dont love it enough to take one of my current run schemes out and I dont like to use more than 4 runs... great play yes, i just dont wanna scrap IZ/OZ/Pwr/Cntr to get it in #hogfbchat
It’s still an art form and difficult to defend. But much like a hard line home phone, it’s worth the small cost and can be effiecent and effective when used properly. I agree that using H/sniffer Backs are a great modern wrinkle #hogfbchat
A2: Yes. Excellent scheme run vs Even fronts IMO. Also love some long Tackle Trap vs Odd fronts in 12 personnel. I think it most definitely has some merit.
#hogfbchat
A3: don’t run tempo, but if did: would have tackles tweak protections that the center calls. They are our best players so I’d give them the first shot. #hogfbchat
A3: QB let's line know which way he wants them, the guys know their assignments at that point and should be able to pick it up and work it out. Key word SHOULD #hogfbchat
A3: C usually communicates to the rest of the line based on threats. Man or slide, and which direction. Points out 2nd level threats to any backs. Automatic BOB call if every one is covered. #hogfbchat
A2: I think trap is a great play when you are under center and you have the quick hitting ability. Not as much of a fan of in the gun. #mtzmade#hogfbchat
Q2: Does the Trap play still have as much merit as it did in the past in today's football? Do you still have trap in your playbook? #hogfbchat@BrennanMarion4
A3: Our protections are based on defensive alignment. Any 4 man front we have a certain protection that picks up any blitz, same with 3-man front. Im@confident in this because I’ve coached it in College and High School. #hogfbchat
A3: Our QB does. For a couple years we had Center calling them but I finally decided it was best for us to have Qb do it. He has the best view AND he is the one getting hit, he should be the one who decides where we block and where we might be vulnerable #hogfbchat
A3: we live and die with one drop back protection. With pocket movement, screens, rpos, and run game two things: have to say no and roll the dice sometimes AND for the one out of 10 plays we are 5 step if u guess right good for you. #hogfbchat
5 man pro 93% of drop back snaps. Play fast. Hunt elephants not field mice. Make the DC call the exotics over and over again if you can win a 1 on 1 outside. You can die an early death working against 1% of a playbook #hogfbchat
A3) the QB or the Center can change protection scheme. The tackles can adjust the protection with several calls. We have words for all of them to allow us to communicate and echo and make sure everyone is on the same page. #hogfbchat
A3: center is the QB of the OL. Gotta be able to call out blitzes and adjust pros. Sometimes tempo can beat them too, but I’d rather see it and beat it with a sound call #hogfbchat
A3: Our OL adjusts Pass Pro at line if needed. Usually starts from the tackles if it’s edge pressure, Center and guards can also make calls based off inside pressure. Just have to communicate calls. #hogfbchat
Last year our oldest guy was one of our guards, so he made the calls. I think you have to go with the most experienced interior linemen to make the call #hogfbchat
A3: QB is responsible for protection. He can make needed adjustments before the ball is snapped. Also if he's wrong he tends to have immediate feedback to let me know he made a mistake. #mtzmade#hogfbchat
A3: our enter makes all the calls for protections and runs in our offense. Blessed to have had a great one in @clayghatch the past few seasons that made life easy on us in that regard. #HogFBChat
A3. Old-QB will tell the OL where he feels his biggest threats are. New - throwing hot to replace blitzing backers. We SHOULD have everything picked up #hogfbchat
A2: As long as DLineman penetrate, the trap will be effective. It's based on principle-technique vrs scheme. I don't see it going away unless regulated. #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachDingus: Q3: In your tempo offense who makes the protection adjustments or do you just try to beat the blitz with pace? #hogfbchat
A3: Our QB will make the line call based on the play call, but for the most part we slide protect when we go tempo. Based on the guys I have, slide protection is the best fit. #hogfbchat
A3: the only adjustment we have is fam. If a linebackers sugars up to the line, the Guard and Tackle scream FAN which means the tackle and guard will “fan out” (which means take deeper steps) and block the guy in their immediate gap, which makes that side man on man #hogfbchat
A3)Oline makes the adjustments but if the QB wants to slide the line and adjust the back, we give him that flexibility if there is a blitz - especially if we dummy count it. #hogfbchat
A2: with our if-then statements, we should be able to handle what happens. But if there is time, absolutely guards make the call. QB has option to slow down if necessary so OL can adjust. Potential production more important than pace to me. #hogfbchat
Only real adjustment we make is with BST to outside pressure. We've been straight 6 man protection. We're going to more 5 man next year so I'm probably gonna be asking about that coming up. #hogfbchat
A3: we have protections that will be known immediately by the OL based on the front. HOWEVER, my center will be the one making the calls. The center calls out the front and the Mike. I know it’s successful as I’ve coached it in college and we played well with it. #hogfbchat
A3 center makes the adjustment. Gotta be able to see everything and be smart enough to make the adjustment. Spend some extra time with the center so he feels comfortable enough to make the calls #HOGFBCHAT
A3: Going into our second season at our school, one of our goals is to continue working with the line so they are comfortable making adjustments at the line. Having 3 sophomores, 1 of which was new to the OL, we didn’t adjust quite as well as we needed to at times. #hogfbchat
John Mitchell CBs Midwest City HS Midwest City OK sorry 4 the late chime in just got back from a girls tennis regional in Bixby, OK what's happenin fellas!?!? #hogfbchat
A3: With the sophistication of todays DCs, we always expect a blitz coming. QB must ID and dump ball off. my uncovered lineman's 1st responsibility is blitz chk, but QB still must ID and execute. Nothing slows a DC's blitz calls down more than completions. #HogFBChat
A3: try to beat them with the pace, especially when you catch them out of position. Last year the I would signal or call out protection if they needed to be changed on the fly. Tried to handle most of the tempo adjustments through high rep practice. #hogfbchat,
A4 both have there strengths we use a lot of movement with him so pays to have him off the ball but when he is on the ball nice to give d another gap to defend #hogfbchat
A4: Currently are using a TE in our offense, but when I have in the past, I love putting them on the line and having them prove their worth as an honorary linemen. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A4 A mix of both. Would NEVER get rid of the TE, especially vs. odd front. If they have a dude at olb and I have an average TE we will split him out.
A4: Depends on the cat playing TE! We don’t get to pick our players so sometimes we don’t have a hand in the dirt type of dude who’s going to get movement on a DL. I prefer playing with a H-back, more things you can do and usually it’s a more versatile kid. #hogfbchat
A4: Depends on what we’re trying to do. OZ and IZ, keeping him inline seems to help more. Power and counter let’s you play with it some having him detached. Although using him as H-back for split zone can be good too! #hogfbchat
A4: gotta be able to do both if you want to fully enjoy having a TE. I like using them attached, flexed, H-back, sometimes in a wing. Very easy to manipulate a defense with a good TE #hogfbchat
A4: Not a great answer but BOTH. To me each has advantages and it is easy to move the TE around. One word/signal moved him on or off the ball so we do both throughout the game. I think it is easy to do both #hogfbchat
A4) last season, we ran the ball better without a TE than with one. BUT with the TE, you set the defensive front (4 down+ 3 tech to TE side) so it has its advantages. #HOGFBCHAT
A4 I think off the ball is more dynamic, but it ultimately is up to the player. Some guys are better out of a 3 point just like some linemen are. There are smaller collisions for the in line guy - so if a guy has a history of being banged up it tends to help. #hogfbchat
A4: Prefer off the ball as you tend have some consistency as to where the EMLOS will line up. Then it also allows variations of power, counter, and zone to be ran along with play-actions off those concepts where an in-line TE tends to limit those. #mtzmade#hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A4 need him on thr line if he's blocking down. You can get away with him off the ball if you're running stretch or something like that. I like both
I’ve missed #HogFBChat a lot recently. Partly due to the decision to step away from coaching next year as I move schools and get to spend more time with my daughters and help out my family’s business. Going to miss the kids and team. But my guys know I’m a text or call away!!
Obviously personnel plays a role, but I prefer online. Decreases space and the defenses ability to make a move to expose the TE as a blocker. Also depends on the play call/type. #HogFBChat
A4: Off the ball...TE can adjust and not get squeezed by the DE, and still have an extra gap for defense to defend. Can also slow down defenses by sending him away from the point of attack. #hogfbchat
A4: (cont.) Ideal personnel for H-back in our scheme is a fullback type kid with decent hands. Usually we take a bigger, lesser athletic back or we find a LB type kid. We ask that kid to do a lot. But also love having a 6’3” True TE who can play in line. #hogfbchat
I prefer to keep number out of the box to ground & pound defenses but if you have the HOGS up front to move people against their well, more power to you! #HOGFBCHAT
Think an H gives you more flexibility but an inline Y effects the D alignment more. In theory I wish I could use both. In practice I really enjoy using neither. #hogfbchat
We are a more open formation operation so the TE off the ball lends more to the OL operating on their own with the TE being an addition to their scheme versus 12/21 run game where the TE is imbedded in all of it #HogFBChat
In reply to
@Coach_Prosser, @CoachShiffman, @BrennanMarion4
A4: I found success in both. The TE off the ball makes the defense spread out which opens up running lanes. A TE on the ball has an extra lineman blacking #hogfbchat
A4: something off topic but can we ALL agree that TE Are LINEMAN who go out for ten passes a game. I hate when students say “I don’t want to play Oline, I want to play TE” 😑😑😑 #hogfbchat
A4 #hogfbchat that depends on your philosophy if you are into more misdirection or old school smash mouth. Really the most important thing to realize is, what is the best thing to do with the kids that you have? I have coached both and they both have been awesome.
As always, please remember to follow your fellow coaches for weekly chats and collaborations. We are doing some great things via social media and let's keep it going strong! #hogfbchat
Inline or in B gap. Pin and pull stretch is my go to play. Attached tight ends also force defenses to tip their hand when rotating safeties similar to 3x1 #hogfbchat
Time to put the little ones to bed! But thank you all for another wonderful Monday night! Except you @Warhogs56, you can suck eggs! See you all next week! #hogfbchat
Qb has to call protections. He knows the pass progression, how long to hold the ball, and hit reads. Don’t ask centers to make those calls. Tackles and tightends read safety to pick up slide side protection #hogfbchat
If anybody has topics or questions they would like posted on a future #hogfbchat please do not hesitate to DM them to myself or @CoachDingus so we can get them on the chat

A3). We try to have a good feel scheme wise and go into our game plan having it already figured out, although we aren’t a nascar tempo team. We move uptempo but still call formation and play from sideline. We do have a 5 play series that we can roll through though. #hogfbchat
Q: How many HS (or colleges) are running inside zone, outside zone/stretch *and* mid-zone. Seems like most HS (and many colleges) only run IZ/OZ, but most NFL (and many colleges) teams run all 3, and what many calls inside zone is really mid-zone #hogfbchat
Hahaha have had many in staff disagreements with this one. Always thought mid zone was midline zone, fs A to bs C. And inside zone was like a tight rollover zone. But now we say mid zone is rollover because it’s in the middle between inside and outside zone #HogFBChat
A1: Always start with inside/outside zone first. It is our base and it takes longer to gel. Then after a couple days we intro power/counter. #hogfbchat
A4: I like the TE off the ball because you can call him an “H-Back” and all the sudden your offense goes from old and outdated to cutting-edge and modern! #hogfbchat
