#rethink_learning A1 We had Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Charles Moisant visit with our students. Spoke of animation and art. Gave our Ss the opportunity to learn and share their art skills with the experts. Here is Mr Barnhart drawing Flounder.
A1: once a week asked Ss:
1) What went well this week? Why?
2) What didn't go well this week? Why?
3) What can I do, as your teacher, to support you in your learning?
#rethink_learning

A2: This week, we were talking about solids, liquids, and gases. I had student model what molecules do in each state, sending my gas molecules running around the room. #rethink_learning
A2 - I love stories and the impact they have on students. Every kid needs to feel connected to real life. Telling stories and listening to students tell theirs helps shape a classroom of wonder, energy and positive self-worth. #rethink_learning
A2 I use stations and will have Ss come up with diff strategies for practicing, we have also done breakouts and some Ss created, and also using @GooseChase for active learning #rethink_learning

Q2: When students learn through play, it changes their perspective from one of compliance to one of wonder and curiosity. What are some ways that you incorporate the magic of wonder and curiosity in your edusetting? #rethink_learning
Through hands on experiences & activities.
It takes extra effort, time and resources, but providing Ss with hands on lessons leads to enriching S's minds.
Thinking outside the box and with inspiration from your #PLN there is no limit to what you can accomplish!
#rethink_learning

Gotta give credit to @AndeleeEspinosa for keeping it positive and helping students think about advocating with their strengths not just advocating to help with deficits #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning We were also fortunate to have Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20 share his experience with his guitar and music. Ss were able to ask questions and learn the importance of music in one’s life.
A2) I’m very proud that I was one of the first Superintendent’s in NJ to embrace the @GSPlayDay movement. Play is paramount! Put down the devices, get outside, soak in the sun, run around, and let you mind flow! #rethink_learning
A2: teaching through #inquiry where Ss are given choice on how to learn and how to demonstrate within parameters of the curriculum. I used 4 frameworks of inquiry in my classroom and Ss developed skills and habits of mind (empathy, open mindedness, etc) #rethink_learning
A2: A wonder wall in our classroom where Ss can pose formal ?s, Genius Hour where we research those ?s, and as Ss have random ?s those ?s are heard/honored/answered (if answer is easily available - sometimes we must learn to live in the uncertainty for a bit!). #rethink_learning
A2b - Most of the time it’s not one great lesson that transforms a class. Rather, it’s the daily interactions of hope, respect, trust and empowerment that shape “magical classrooms” #teachpos#rethink_learning
A2: I made use of a lot of visuals which leads to #inquiry Qs - what do you see? What do you think? What do you wonder?? This image led to learning about the environment and child labour. #rethink_learning

The kids loved it...we started w/ fun topics such as "Favourite movie", "favourite food" then we got into deeper stuff as we built community and climate. #rethink_learning
A3: I like to invite support staff, like guidance and Social Workers in to see the kids in action. The students are so proud to show their work and it lets their support staff see them in a different setting. #rethink_learning
A3) There s an abundance of avenues to bring in stakeholders into your schools safely (virtually) and show all of the wonderful things your schools are doing. From Mystery Skype to GHO - hit up @wkrakower & @cybraryman1 - they literally wrote the book on it! #rethink_learning

#rethink_learning A3 We have brought in speakers to engage our students. Started in 2013 with Mark Goodman speaking to our 1980s class. Students enjoy interacting with those of the past. Makes it real!
A3: We bring the outside in frequently using GHO, Skype, guest speakers, etc. last year my husband shared Revolutionary War re-enactments with our 8th graders #rethink_learning
Ts who see play as critical and it can happen in hi sch - think improv across curriculum -or K - let kids go outside after rain & play in puddles -create spaces 4 kids to be curious, ask questions, experiment w ideas & explore physical features of natural world #rethink_learning
A3: develop ongoing community partnerships and a reputation for being a classroom of problem solvers. Get learners working on solutions to real community problems and they will be both empowered and exposed to the joy of making a positive impact. #rethink_learning

A3: I have been playing with the idea of using Tour Creator as a way for students to show their learning and explore their environment... I am also thinking this will be a great tool for sitting student transitions. Ask could visit their new class/teacher using AR/VR.
Thanks for everyone for participating in #rethink_learning tonight and thanks so much to guest host @tishrich for inspiring!! See all of you in a few weeks! @bbray27
Thank you to all the awesome educators who were magical today - Please follow each other to build your PLN. Hope you join us at #rethink_learning on Monday, Nov. 12th same time with our next topic, Empathy

Jumping in late to #formativechat This is Barbara - just finished #rethink_learning and so excited to learn more about formative assessments. Thank you @Rdene915
Yes! Still remember when our local weatherman visited my class in the 3rd grade!! My learning about clouds has forever stuck from that experience! #rethink_learning#MLmagical
A3: Bring the learning to life. I once taught a lesson about sled dogs. To make it more real, I brought in an actual Iditarod winner, who brought in a sled he had made and he shared his experiences with the students. We then took a field trip to his dog yard. #rethink_learning
Thanks Barbara! The themes seem to resonate with educators and parents who want something more than focus on passing tests in schools #rethink_learning
Yes - and we got our hug and selfie. It was fun to be with you when I finally found you in the big room. Glad to be here at #formativechat after #rethink_learning. You are amazing doing both. Whew!
Our Kindness Fair was incredible! Parents sent us emails sharing how their child's perception of the world, and their role in it, changed - students were empowered to see that they can do great things no matter their age! #rethink_learning#passionforkindness
