Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
Dave from MI. HS Science teacher. Forensic Science and Chemistry. @Edu_Thompson 's cohost and retweeter tonight. Plus my first Sunday of summer! #21stedchat
Greetings, Jill & Dave. Prof Susan in IL finally reemerging on social media after a year or more largely off. Needed the break.
Glad to be back to #21stedchat
Great topic tonight.
A1. Design thinking allows for innovation, creativity and challenges their thinking and that can be done at any age. Check out these preschoolers doing design thinking work: https://t.co/X24loxOfxC#21stedchat
A1: I think design thinking just doesn't just stop at the lesson but the design of the classroom too. @SteelcaseEDU doing a lot in this area. #21stedchat
A1 As a parent of 3 kids under 5, I know that kids love a challenge and will build to a solution - they need guidance to improve and support to not give up, but they eventually succeed. The same is true of my HS STEM Academy Ss! #21stedchat
A1 Education at all levels has long suffered from the lack of creativity in both teaching & learning.
Design thinking needed for teaching & learning. #21stedchat
A1 what I think is most important is to consider adopting the postures & mindset of #designthinking across our schools: need finding, empathy fueled, authenticity oriented, fail up, lean into the squish #21stedchat#dtk12chat
I feel like a complete newb... I'm new to these chats so I'm just trying to keep up with all of you. What does A1 mean? And what exactly is design thinking?? #READ5305#21stedchat
We just did empathy interviews as a team for the first time and it was great. I can see how this could fit into morning meetings for students. #21stedchat
A1: because all age levels can do design thinking. We are teaching them, even at 1 or 2 years old, that they can think for themselves and make choices that have consequences. #21stedchat

Sometimes I think space is getting to much credit in the learning process. How many times are students in the Hall or on the floor to create? #21stedchat

A1: Design thinking is important in all classrooms because UDL should be implemented in all classrooms! Every class is different and thus, the needs of each individual in those classes are different, from pre-k to university level! #edsp454#21stedchat
A2 lots of book recreation designs. Cardboard building with working motors. The main thing to know is Design Thibkibg is not just about STEM. It can be used in any content area #21stedchat
A2. I have created a virtual Design Thinking course for our district that takes educators through the our design thinking process using a problem of practice #21stedchat
A1: Design thinking gives students power in a creative process. I think that it can start very young if the classrooms cultivate that type of community. #21stedchat#READ5305
A2: I give ss time to play with materials and then create something out of the materials. Through the design process, they learn the concepts. Magnet invention and #rubegoldberg machines are 2 examples.#21stedchat
Friendly amendment: design of rooms, bldgs, external environments all contribute in big ways. Beauty & stimulating design can uplift spirits, enlighten minds, open hearts.

Traditional classroom settings & practices are outdated & some, ineffective. The world as we know it changes daily & our Education programs need to change too.Teaching 21st century skills to students from a young age is essential to get by in today's society. #edsp454#21stedchat
Maybe this fits? I tell my students to be problem solvers in all the small things in class, so they begin to see how to solve their normal, everyday problems. #READ5305#21stedchat
A2. I have used design thinking in BOY activities-- creating rules, or plans for our classroom or our school. I feel as though I had a notion that it's easier to use design thinking in science or social studies classes-- but I can do it in reading classes! #21stedchat#READ5305
A2 if you check out the #sicmbc hashtag you will find all sorts of evidence of #designthinking postures in practice as well as some all out design challenges Iâve run in classrooms ranging from water security to games for social good #21stedchathttps://t.co/jmWXLbFHpN#makered

A2 Design thinking is a way of life. Guiding and supporting Ss in their journey to a solution can happen in many ways, but there is nothing quite like that "Aha!" moment that occurs when all the pieces click. #21stedchat

A3 I'm loving the resources shared. You should check out @NJOotM and the national Odyssey of the Mind program, as well as @IDODI Destination Imagination. Competitive practice for Ss to learn how to think! #21stedchat
A4 a lot of educators have a hard time figuring where to start. To me start with reading material from the whole class. Or use something that YOUR Students like to do. #21stedchat
A4: I might have problems trying to get my colleagues on board in a school that likes for us to all be on the same page on any given day. And I would get tired of hearing, "My kids can't do that." #READ5305#21stedchat
A4 Accountability and timelines is always challenging. We understand the process as educators but our system demands report cards, graduation, and other scheduled milestones. Build in frequent formative assessment and checkins, and teach your Ss to do so themselves! #21stedchat
A4 Biggest challenges for teachers & profs: lack of time [to think creatively & also to add creative learning activities] & requirements re: coverage of course material.

A5. Open-ended questions encourage students to reflect and reveal whatâs important to them. Along with questions like âWhy do we need to solve that problem?â or âHow did you notice this problem?â #21stedchat
Has anyone implemented design thinking in a test prep environment? I love coming up with creative activities during that season- would love to hear ideas. #21stedchat#READ5305
A5 Have students pose their biggest questions about life & the world. Then begin to consider thoughts, actions, inventions, art, stories that can contribute to answering some of the big questons. Of course, in DT, the process is what is most important.

Before tonight I hadn't realized how a Twitter chat could connect me to other educators and give me so much information so fast. It was great! #21stedchat@READ5305
Thanks for another great #21stedchat next week we will be discussing: Creativity in the Classroom - What Can I Do To Make Learning More... Join @Edu_Thompson and I next Sun at 8 PM ET US.
A6 I love the attention to DT. Timely as I travel to a seminar for E flush Chairs & Grad Prog directors (am newly this). Will include DT in our discussions for sure.
Best to all! Good night.

Absolutely! I went to worlds several times as a student, and now as an adult and a teacher/admin I understand the amazing #problemsolving and #teamwork skills I learned by participating! #21stedchat

Oh no, we give 30 minutes of recess. But Heaven forbid we spend more time educating our teachers so they feel capable of doing more than proctor test prep packets. Whoa! Got a touch sassy there! #21stedchat#READ5305
