Welcome! This is the place to learn new ideas!
Have not tried it have looked it over. My kids use a lot too
Well let's get things started!
Q1: What are the characteristics of a STREAM classroom?
Yes with our 6-8 students. Amazing creativity.
Good morning . Coming to you from where I am working on Stats hmwrk
Morning! Good luck with the Class!
Our K-5 are using .org. Love it!
Got it. We refer to STEM and then Religion across the curriculum. I like this newer inclusive term. https://t.co/K3otGt6ByC
Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, Mathematics
A1 Hands on, willing to take risks and fail, many questions that need answers, teacher as guide
A: A STREAM classroom involves Ss using the E.D. process & integrated disciplines 2 develop solutions to real world problems
The courses are making my middle school students work :)
A1 . First premise of room: because of Incarnation, know God is both Creator and Sustainor of all things.
A1: this classroom is flowing with ideas!
Thanks Barb, it's 11:10pm Saturday night here! Since I'm writing from the future, Saturday was a productive
Good morning, ! Bill from Philadelphia! Stopping by for as long as the kiddos will allow!
Wow! Didn't realize it was that late!
Does anyone have experience with LittleBits for circuits?
We have used them for over a year!
Welcome! How are the kiddos? Give them a cookie from Aunt Barb!
No worries! This is way better than TV!
A1 Meaningful integration of EdTech, PBL, Faith across subject areas
A1: one of our values is awareness of God in everything and every day situations
A1 Multiple disciplines & approaches, open to new ideas, willing to make mistakes & learn from them, allow kids to take lead
I have 2 sets. I have trouble encouraging ss to create new things w them. They only follow the instructions
A1: integrated - no separation of subjects
Hi, Barb! They are great! Enjoying a beautiful Saturday morning! oh so I can blame you for the cookies!!
that's true in STREAM conference this June will help
Sorry to be joining late.
Yes, allow students to take the lead. https://t.co/5vK5th3gJL
A1 Multiple disciplines & approaches, open to new ideas, willing to make mistakes & learn from them, allow kids to take lead
A1. Subjects across the curriculum incorporated into your core concept being taught.
sweet! Will check it out after chat! Thanks
A1: integrating theology across the curriculum and allowing students to lead discussions
I played with them at an but no classroom experience. They seemed awesome.
Love the Stream concept. Recently used a Design Thinking process that saw RE units integrated with Science, Technology, etc
That is so powerful to let students control and point the way in their learning
we are just getting started with q1, elements of a STREAM classroom
Q1 active,engaging,problem solving,groups,inquiry,lots of questioning by teacher,no correct answer,students fail & it is OK
Giving students opportunities in all class disciplines to explore and find answers
Q2: What types of STREAM activities are you
implementing in your school?
This is essential and also marks an important early point in making progress from traditional to STREAM.
Good morning from northern Saskatchewan where the sun is shining! Late but I'll catch up
A1 cont. stem, steam, stream, all these reflect intuition that understanding is not divided into subjects, but is a whole.
A1:Classes will have teachers willing to engage students incorporating all disciplines allowing for 21st century learning
Another sign a saw during accreditation visit: "The more I study science, the more I believe in God." THAT is STREAM!
Good morning, everyone! Feeling cheery. Had a great time with my fabulous staff these past couple of days
We are a grant winner! Follow out Twitter account
A2 we spent 2 days at diocesan youth camp at environmental stewardship retreat (science/religion camp)
A2: We are doing activities school wide for Earth day coming up & have a Family STREAM night this week.
Joining late today. A1: Seems that intentionality is an imp characteristic. A2: We've begun after school STEM labs.
A2 Comp lab as makerspace all requiring kids to explore and build
My STREAM for now is centered around our Monarch Rescue Garden
Morning! We got some smoke from Kansas this week!
A2 We some awesome T's with us today!
A2 We some awesome T's with us today!
Sorry to miss today. Another late night at school recording Mary Poppins
I know hate that. Had to make a choice and for various reasons went ISTE. Hate those decisions
Hi Marcie! I hope you are doing well!
HI BIll! I am doing well. I hope you are too.
A2: We've also begun robotics labs as an after school and summer programs.
For our outdoor learning environment, teachers are collaborating to integrate but also to have older students mentor
Hi Melva! I hope you are doing well.
A2:Hoping to share initiatives discussed this morning w/teachers in which will move us from STEM to STREAM
Our Monarch Rescue Project T's are here this morning! They are doing awesome things with S's
A2 STEAM Teams of Ss. Interdisciplinary 6-week projects that our S selected and shared w/community https://t.co/5B2dup3gmV
A1. Signs and symbols of faith throughout the classroom. Reverance regarding electronic communication.
You will have a blast at and share it all : )
We are a Monarch Rescue Grant recipient https://t.co/SLSWqSziiL . Check it out! We received 2 additional grants this year.
Exactly! LIfe requires interdisciplinary problem solving.
Our principal, wants it; pushing DI, greater DOK, and PBL more -- everyone did PBL unit this year
I actually have a new space designed ... didn't get grant we tried for but I have plenty of ideas
We are getting closer to having a greenhouse on campus so Ss can grow food for those who need it. Excited!
A2: we recently combined science and theology by studying the physical death of Jesus
right! The more I study, the more I am struck at the incredible unity of universe.
welcome to ! Glad you are up to join in. is here too. Maybe
my 8th graders have done numerous PBL projects with me, I hope they are ready for you guys in the fall!
We are designing a space called Student Creative Center, w/Flexible spaces for Ss to work onProjects
Q3. How do you incorporate Religion across the curriculum?
A2: waiting to hear on grant to start outdoor sci lab. One step at a time but eventually hope to have germ house, pond, etc
That's great-keep plugging away! I'd love to know of grants willing to look at schools not necessarily low SES
This is awesome!! Coongrats!
school was working towards using DT as whole school pedagogy. RE showed how subjects can work with each other
Where do you get a Monarch Rescue Grant? I love that idea!
what was the space used for before?
A2. in our Feast Day activities - procession to our Church with banners, Mass and fun activities in the p.m.
A3 8 religion is 1st period, 8 science is 2nd period, I teach both! Lots of natural overlap
The STREAM space is just as important as the lessons! Need flexible/collaborative design
Religion is easiest for me. God's hand touches all!
We went after one from American Honda and didn't get it. However, there are ways to do cheaper makerovers.
No today. helping out beggars for the poor w/ ..
Our religion io n teacher finds out what we are learning about and she makes sure that it is integrated in all classes.
A3 Our school developed and offers a Regious Art course.
we have 6 driving words for each space, research, build, think tank, perform, produce, & discuss.
science is where I am integrating religion most, studying soil and plants right now
A3 Religion naturally incorporates into the computer lab. We discuss God's gifts through invention and how we can use wisely
rethinking tradl spaces is crucial, but Ts & ss trained to see school in 1 way. How to engage broader vision?
A3. I am Librarian-reading Lost in St. Peter Tomb by Ahern (Sister P. is secret agent for the Pope) to my 2/3 grade students
This is going to be a crucial shift to make going forward!! Lots of education and buy in are needed
Q3. Respecting the earth and its resources is a great way to incorporate religion in STREAM.
Religion naturally incorporates into Biology, but not without controversy!
A3. Seismology is known as the Jesuit Science
A3 Our school developed and offers a Religion Art course.
Huge shift! Need to start w the why and provide research on it. Build buy-in. Then...PD...PD and PD
is now trending in USA, ranking 43
first I've heard of these! Thanks for sharing#catholicedchat wonder if my diocese uses these?
A3: Religion drives everything we do! "Everything we do and make is in collaboration with God"
A3: love intersection of faith and science - all (plants, animals, minerals) created by God in complex and beautiful ways...
do they still do this? I thought last year was the the last one?
But controversy can take everyone deeper ... or does it divide the learning community too much?
A3. It's important Ts talk about how Ss innovation has a divine role in the process of creation https://t.co/x1q5Dh3zAQ
A3: teaching respect for all people/creation/opinions
Definitley! We are forcing the space to work Changing learning environment made a need for space
excuse is too little $ available, real reason, Ts don't want to change. I don't get static mindset
A3 S's use EdTech as Evangelization tool!
A3. Just bought "science, Evil., & Creationism by national academy of science...hope it helps with controversy!
We write a class book that is published each year, this year students wrote about & illustrated the Easter story. 1/2
and it was a process. Faith and science go hand in hand
I am so with you on that! Mindset of what we have always done will continue to work is not good
A3. Most important that Ss understand Faith and Science are complementary, not opposed.
I'm finding its creating little jealousy amongst Ts who do PBL & those who don't.
Perfect chance to reach out hand to those not help them along Results worth it
A3: It begins with having teachers who are first witnesses to the faith.
heheh, my ss used to say that. Culture is shifting at SBCS! Er, well, in my room at least.
YES! So freeing to come from public school to Catholic and be able to talk about faith and pray together
that's why the lead in is important. Need to take the excuses away and build consensus early!
I have a P who doesn't want me to even use the word evolution. Any resources to help P understand it's not a dirty word?
Can be uphill fight against secular culture, though.
A3: Parable of talents, wealth management (economics), compound interest (math): good infusion lesson for advanced math
it is scary to change. It is scarier to become a living fossil.
AdvancEd has incorporated them into accreditation & there will even be teacher evaluations based on them as well
Is the course about creating religious art or studying historical artworks?
Last year's book was how p traditional Dene lifestyle of hunting, fishing, gathering meets needs, faith inseparable 2/2
Faith, Science&Reason Midwest Theological textbook also great teacher resource
I wish I had one ... silly thought - is the word evolution in the Catechism? That would be useful
I'd love to chat about this. Problem I'm seeing too.
Q4: What are your favorite resources for STREAM teaching and learning?
tricky when you are a young T pushing an established staff & admin... prudence and patience...
Baby steps! Giving Ts ideas to help them get started. Pieces of STREAM . And by example. Our school Pre-6
Yes That is a real struggle for many schools that I know. Will take leaders who guide the path too
A4 my favorites resources is connecting with teachers on that are practicing STREAM
A4 my favorites resources is connecting with teachers on that are practicing STREAM
figured this out Fri as a Ts chatted with me. Was enlightening & has now consumed my thinking on how to fix it.
Almost like a kind of "conversion" needed?
Working on dissertation on specific intentional faith integration across curriculum. Would appreciate all ideas
A4 I keep an eye on Twitter, sessions at conferences, taking tech tools and figure out how to use them for STREAM
It includes both.Secondary students take a compulsory Religion course each year. This course qualifies as one.
It is a struggle but you are there for the Ss. Do what you do! Soon they will ask Ts to do the same!
seen the controversy arising from misunderstanding both bio and theology. No real problem, just questions
Oh yes! Huge difference since I changed the way we work Hope others will follow is best way
the one good thing that came out of January's tragedy is that SCC wants more religious instruction
you are doing great! Keep it up and it'll change
It can definitely be an issue, esp in a small school
Always look for the positive in tragedy ... can be great conversations
Teach Amazing Grace movie as prolife/religion/social studies
A4 Great resources can be found via Twitter, Pinterest, prof orgs, local community org, & local public library
A4. Access to the resources available on the world wide web have really opened up opportunites to diversify our learning.
right! I love the path I'm on. Ss are more on board too. Ts will change or not, little I can do about that.
A4: Most resources I find our STEM/STEAM so this is awesome to connect with Educators who make it STREAM
A4 Highly recommend seeing if there is a local makerspace and teacher meet ups. Learn so much there too
A4: I talk with other faculty about their lessons & how they incorporate our Catholic education and Benedictine values
You keep doing what you know is right. Things will change one way or another
A3. The story of Jacob, Laban and speckled goats (Genesis 30) can be incorporated into lesson on recessive genes.
A4 Is anyone using a specific curriculum for STEM/STEAM/STREAM?
which school do you teach at? Not often I see other Ts mentioning OSB values!
I have kind of created my own activities. Have not seen one specific curriculum yet
I have talked to museums with educator programs and a lot of times they have been very helpful with resources.
What type of STREAM PD support is most needed?
Yes. And who continue to participate in their adult faith formation throughout their lives. https://t.co/78q62iTZ1I
A3: It begins with having teachers who are first witnesses to the faith.
We are a PLTW project Lead the Way school. It is STEM. We add the R!
A4 formed a STREAM team of teachers and just identified to be Director of the program
Changing schedule next yr so Ts can do more & Ss can learn more and better! Thanks and for helping
time to brainstorm, develop latent connections of finding Christ in all things.
St. Louis is considering a CatholicEdCamp, so we will be reaching out to Omaha and DMV.
I highly recommend U. Notre Dames STEM Teaching Fellowship Program. Awesome opportunities for Tt & school!
yeah! Another Benedictine person here :) welcome.
How are you modifying the schedule? Very interested in looking at different structures!
Pd support for all teachers and not just a few. Makes all T feel more involved.
look up flex-mod and you'll see a variety. We are in process of designing the one that works for us.
when in Hong Kong at big buddha and monastery, I found Christ in the beauty and way I saw reverence in others
Not too difficult to do. Tool for evangelising Ss.
this sounds awesome! Gonna check it out!
I think an impt piece is to support cross curricular thinking/planning. Too often prep in silos.
A4: Having hosted my 1st Edcamp w/ & they can be wonderful places to share resources
A5: Trickiest part of PD support is some subjects are just more abstract (math)
Yes! https://t.co/qe11xRaXv0
Identifying a cohort of lead teachers within a school is a great way to get the initiative started!
Science teachers, the standards have changed. Texts are updating to meet STEM. Love the changes! All u need to add is R.
Our state TOY, , is a math maven
Exactly! Can't plan in isolation.
Good morning Sorry for the late greeting
YES! Stop with the silos based on subject. That isolation needs to end
STREAM TEAM has a nice ring to it! https://t.co/HuHgs5IGzz
A4 formed a STREAM team of teachers and just identified to be Director of the program
Have to run Got to pick up cake for son's 16th birthday party. Gulp Time flies!
A5: For math I think best comes with branching across curriculum: no "real-world" math happens without other knowledge
A5: Support for Tt to collaborate across disciplines to develop PBL. Enhancing Lesson Plans to be more inquiry based.
A5 I think Ts need play time in a Makerspace environment with other Ts
A5: abstract isn't an excuse, though: concrete models can represent and interpret the abstract (deep DOK opportunity)
Wow! Have a great day! Congrats on 16!!
A4 Release time 4 Ts is necessary too if you want them to facilitate the S learning
Truly feel changing the system, in this case beginning with schedule, allows for Ts to reflect on STREAM, and PBL.
silos make pbl super difficult to attempt. need other Ts expertise to make it happen!
Great that you can join us!
Q6: How do you build partnerships with your school community to promote STREAM?
Have a great Saturday, everyone! Great to connect and chat this morning!!
Have to head out. Have a wonderful week.
A6 NCEA provide grant money for
A5: Understanding it's not more work, but changing a mindset of what learning in the classroom looks like.
Aunt Barb's cookies worked!
That's what I love about pbl, the concepts are better learned and more interesting & applicable when presented as a "story"
bilocating would be such a help in this frenetic world we live in...
Hahaha!! Yes, yes they did!!
right. Not more work, but different work. I love backward designing projects and units! Less stress long term
please keep me informed. I would love to help. I'm on the team but love in Jeff city diocese
Thank you everyone, I could barely keep up with all the notes I have taken of things to look into for the future!
A5: give a Benedictine value to discuss at each faculty meeting & encouraged T to incorporate into their subjects & actions
A6 we have the Ss invite them and share what they are creating
might disagree with my last tweet; it's beginning two making learning better for S
