So excited for tonight! Give a follow - new to !
Hello! Michelle from Turner.
Okay peeps. I'm interested in this idea of flexible seating...but I need help thinking about it at HS Sci level. ;)
Deb Hamm here. Interested in learning about flexible seating and how teachers are addressing student needs with seating.
Ellinwood representing! !
Traci here from Andover, joining a little late
A1: Haven't started but in my head it looks AWESOME!! LOL
Kyle, Buhler, Integration Tech
I get to see you again... and that's a very good thing. 😃
A1-I am going to be coteaching w/ - don't want our classroom filled w/desks & no other space so we are here to learn!
. A1 don't have pictures, but I have lots of choices- two ottomans, lots of pillows and blankets,
A1 I'm excited to see the rooms! Should we really make it look like Starbucks or just give lots of seating options
No pic handy, desks were perimeter of room facing wall. Ss Worked that way, turned around 2discuss. Wide open center. Bungees
I received 2 wobble chairs and 2 exercise balls for the kids. It is only the start of my vision. https://t.co/IbMj5uwDKW
can you come help me set up my room? Have to keep the desks so it's challenge
A1: haven't tried it, but want to this year. Have been reading blogs and posts about this topic.
A1: I havent started yet, but would love to see pics of primary rooms...& how u deal w/ supplies, books, folders, notebooks, etc
Happy you're part of my , Livi!
A1: Submitted a grant for more options. This yr was more select any place you want to work option. They created spots they liked.
A1: Have had tables for 10+ yrs (no desks) & incorp. mvmt, but haven't redesigned beyond that as a HS T. https://t.co/uoS9EHyxQt
Loved it! Was an easy transition for them!
A1: I don't have pics but I have a couch, love seat, rocking chair, glider, and 6 cushions in my classroom. Total Investment: $1
I "push things" by using tables grouped together (like pods). "they" try and change it every break. https://t.co/yZRp2BPREx
A1: Not sure if this counts, my hs sci clsrm changes almost daily! Here it is as a museum - hosting student-designed exhibits
My Ss loved camp chairs this year!
I like the idea of Starbucks. More brain based idea when doing lighting, etc that way. https://t.co/1SoCuCVN8f
A1 I'm excited to see the rooms! Should we really make it look like Starbucks or just give lots of seating options
A1: Wheeled desks & stationary desks in groups, tables, sofa, bean bags, large floor space to back left https://t.co/Eg6grofzkn
The "mythical" they - of whoever tries to put classroom seating together. Not my kids.
I have a fear of lice, so rarely. It was the one chair we had to have a rotation for-kids loves it!
My Ss kept a showbox shape tub with their supplies and then we had communal supplies as well.
Love the yoga mats! do u notice a big diff in time? Im worried we will spend 2 much time getting things set up & put away
But I want more flexibility, different kinds of seating. Just not sure how I can/should in a lab setting. I wish I had sep space!
A1. We're opening a new campus, no desks & 3 kinds of seating or more in each classroom. 4th/5th will have 1 standing ht table ea
A1: No flexible seating...yet. After I've been mulling it over and getting more excited to try it
I encouraged any S that felt the need. The ones that really needed it, selected the right option.
I have no pictures but I have low tables, standing desks, yoga balls, cubes, bean bags, and yoga mats!
I see Ss for 50-min periods & say that they can stand/stretch/move whenever. "I need a stretch break" > "can I go to the RR?"
W/ not going through it yet, I wonder with the designs for elem. do you do a rug time for mini lessons, or just where they are at?
IM LATE! so sorry! Trying to catch up and reread all the awesomeness!
A1: Does this count? My room has been transformed into a museum! The physical space changes almost daily. https://t.co/lNFi7HjrmE
This year I'm adding a table propped up with bed raisers to have a place to stand!
Mine is a lot like a rug time. I don't do a lot of whole group lessons though so we use it only when necessary!
In our K-5 school, whole group is mostly on carpet and small group at tables
Kara-- can help getting started w/ flex furniture.
Yoga mats seem like a great idea!
This is going to be one of my additions this year too, in some form.
A1: We use pillows and different table areas, and I ordered some exercise ball seats for next year. No pictures yet, though.
I loved my standing table! I had one S stand basically all year!
School Outfitters now makes a $48 stool like a Hokki!
Where did you get standing desks?
Always have a tub of clipboards ready to go so students can find their best thinking spot!
I'm starting to see cushions and bath mats at low tables, and crate seats as the clear front runners. what do you think?
anyone have pics of how they have their kids store their crap?
I did rug time, but had kids that hated the floor so by end of year I just told them to sit close https://t.co/VBwz17z7yH
W/ not going through it yet, I wonder with the designs for elem. do you do a rug time for mini lessons, or just where they are at?
A S said her mom has one a t work and wishes we could have one. Perfect reason to have one.
A2 budget, resources that are already available and just need to be tweaked, expectations and parent communciation
A2-- I think you need to think about management-- how are you going to manage the new space. Also, how to intro to them!
I don't! But I'm lucky to have some shelves that create a cubby for each S! It really cuts down on clutter!
Here's what flex seating looked like in my room this yr. Started with 5 bean bags ended with 1. https://t.co/DioFRlaFSN
was the only chair they rotated. It was their choice to do this, they wrote a list and kept track. https://t.co/x3pUk8IpsP
how did you do the rotation?
Q2: Some Ss will want a desk and that is ok!! Flexible seating is more than just having cool chairs, it's giving Ss choice.
A1 As a T, I converted my own desk to standing so I was on my feet & moving all period. Ss 10x more likely to ask ?s & focus
A2- says that we often design for kids, but not with kids. My goal is to get kid input after I introduce in fall!
A2: biggest things to consider- where to put their stuff, how to get enough seating- donors choose isn't an option.
A2: How they will organize S supplies and getting buy-in from admin! & when a seat is "up for grabs".
A2 what YOU as the teacher would be willing to allow. Push your boundaries, but be comfortable w/ choices so it can succeed.
A2 S needs. Some need trad-type seating. Also, and not being sarcastic here, flexibility.
A2 - In my cotaught classroom this yr we will have 35+ kids, so we have to consider SPACE!! any tips?
I'm really interested in doing that, some Ss already stand, but writing can be hard https://t.co/uzh5yByudr
This year I'm adding a table propped up with bed raisers to have a place to stand!
I would be very interested in hearing how things were managed for elementary https://t.co/24hFoO5rOg
A2-- I think you need to think about management-- how are you going to manage the new space. Also, how to intro to them!
A2 I'm considering space, expectations, and how to do whole lessons, even though we do mostly small group
A2: Adimin's perspective, available resources & space, need/want, survey the students!! What is their ideal learning environment?
A2 One of the things that we talked about was transitioning to choice seating- we did one whole staff PD about it.
Q2 your classroom management!
Eric from from Frontenac!
A2:Room size, classroom management, budget, and in the perfect world take Ss take the role of setting up the room for them
Q2: Where students will store supplies is my biggest thing. Want easy access for iPads, etc. Hoping to learn from you all on this!
A2 Also that not everyone has to roll it out the same way or even have the same furniture
A2. I have to consider space. My room isn't huge. I would love to do way more than I have room for!
I had our maintenance staff make ours. They just made longer legs and stored the old ones.
I will keep you posted-- starting journey this fall.
Thoughts, plans on flex furniture, high school Jenny?!
Q2: my biggest concern is having the resources/money to do this.
A2: I think it's important to make it about Ss' self-awareness/finding their best spots & less about making it a 'reward.'
Hi, . Joining in late, on vacation with the family and it's downtime for each of us now.
Thoroughly consider expectations for students. Like how/when they will be used. Can they change throughout the day?
A2. I am comfortable with a lot less structure than some Ts and you have to consider what you're comfortable with.
A2 expectations and that the teacher has the right to veto a choice they make if they are not working
Most items are in cubbies & S's art tubs. We do community supplies for things like pencils, in caddies around room.
I find my "standers" are going to find a way no matter if I had something or not. https://t.co/6WYwrxa5Tc
I'm really interested in doing that, some Ss already stand, but writing can be hard https://t.co/uzh5yByudr
This year I'm adding a table propped up with bed raisers to have a place to stand!
We are doing not fancy (inexpensive) tables and got Yoga Balls for $7 at Wal Mart
A2 Who's going to create rules/guidelines? Ss? T? Combo?
A2-The areas of the room as options, furniture currently have, what you need to purchase, procedures for seating options
A2: Reviewing expectations with Ss and managing the use of all the seating options.
There are some great blogs on doing it with what you have!
A2: Noise (back table has 3 doors w/hallway noise and adjoining classroom close so it's harder to hear/concentrate back there
Ss kept personal supply in magazine boxes stored on a shelf. General supply was all communal. https://t.co/c6PBp2L7TO
Discuss rules and expect growing pains!
I'm thinking first day of school when kids have never seen this. How did you introduce it?
I let my change with whatever we were doing. They came up with a five minute rule by themselves. https://t.co/uhOO954F6J
Thoroughly consider expectations for students. Like how/when they will be used. Can they change throughout the day?
I imagine that I will still do whole group lessons on the carpet! We do mini-lessons mostly so it would be about 10 min
A2 Needs of the students! You may have the ideal room in your head, but if your students aren't successful with this, be FLEXIBLE!
Over and out for tonight, you amazing people!! Curious to see ideas from rest of chat--and take them with me into 16-17!
Each kid and group of kids are different! Flexible seating has to be flexible and meet needs of students
Yes! A month In and they knew what worked for them! Rarely had to move them! https://t.co/U7slt5nzyH
A2: I think it's important to make it about Ss' self-awareness/finding their best spots & less about making it a 'reward.'
I am worried it will feel like chaos & I will want 2 give up
Love that! I let mine move as well. Plan to allow kids to create expectations.
A2-What will you do with backpacks/students books w/out individual desks? That is what I am trying to problem solve.
A lot of talk on expectations! Also discussing how important it is to find what works for them!
A2 Another thing-- storage. w/o desks kids need a place for their stuff. We have ikea type shelves
A2) Need to really consider the "why" & how it compliments teaching & learning in for Ss. Don't think of it has a cool fad.
A2: my concerns are balancing how admin and parents will take it. How to manage it with kids.
I've always had a chair and couch in my room. I took my kitchen table from home. Just start small! https://t.co/MxClxOK3ny
Q2: my biggest concern is having the resources/money to do this.
Great question. I have heard some Ts send out a letter a head to prepare. But would LOVE more info. https://t.co/Ii2LN2CMhz
I'm thinking first day of school when kids have never seen this. How did you introduce it?
A2 Flexible means just that. Be prepared to have your classroom look different every year. The room should fit your students!
I set a lot of expectations. I remind them a lot as well. If you get them adjusted, it works!
Great idea for developing expectations for https://t.co/JmKA0tlkqD
Idea from :: T creates video qr code that is attached to each flex seating area to show expectations
A2: organization (supplies), behavior expectations, a space for all- meeting Ss needs
If I haven't been up for 5 min it's still mine. their rule so it worked. https://t.co/ncfwdIueE8
like try something for 5 minutes?
A2: We are using the first two weeks to intro just the right fit - I pick for chairs! - then we will set daily rotations.
We have the wobble stools which are awesome, the desk are from online
A2 Some of our ts started w/ assigned seating and gradually introduced choice, moving the seats around
Great! Do you know how much they are?
A2 Something to consider: How will you prep or respond to Ps? "That's not how it was when..."
A2: Not a big fan of rules/limitations, but fights and destruction of new seats happen. Simple rules the Ss create.
A2: 1. S learning needs 2. Space/Materials/Logistics 3. Traffic flow/ access to sink, stations, materials 4. Safety
This is true for SO MANY THINGS in education! Justify WHY you are doing it!
I'd seen a pic of that and want to try it. I always have a couple of kids who prefer to stand. https://t.co/aZk2kZ0ipy
This year I'm adding a table propped up with bed raisers to have a place to stand!
Biggest challenges you have faced?
I did a lot of reading up to prepare myself for the change. Gradually introduce, and provide clear guidelines.
I always started off the year asking Ss what they need from the room to be successful and set my room up for their needs not mine.
Ask Ps/friends for donations! Had old couch & several bean bags donated from college friends that don't use them anymore
I stuff my bean bags with plastic bags and newspaper! $30 at Walmart. Getting a little heavy, but okay still.
That is why I still have home seats for each kid they don't sit in them very much https://t.co/IDlhgWYhUg
A2: my concerns are balancing how admin and parents will take it. How to manage it with kids.
Be open and flexible! Don't think that what you set up at the beginning of the year will work all year! https://t.co/4ZhysL2bAV
I always started off the year asking Ss what they need from the room to be successful and set my room up for their needs not mine.
Look up sensory processing/integration. Lots of research from the SpEd world that supports flexible seating.
Talk about it! My admins see a lot of class expectations in my room even though my Ss are moving a lot!
So hard to be flexible, but that is key! Also being patient w/Ss and yourself as you figure it out. https://t.co/z8axU7lpMd
A2 Needs of the students! You may have the ideal room in your head, but if your students aren't successful with this, be FLEXIBLE!
Your kids will work better than ever before! Takes some time to set up routines and expectations, but worth it!
There are reams of research out there to support it. We just need to be able to show it is best for the kids.
A3- Ask them, have class meetings periodically to discuss and see what is working and needs to change.
How do you do (or consider) flexible seating if all you have is desks? Very curious.
A3. I tell my Ss that if they have ideas to share them! I may not always be able to accommodate but I'll sure try!
Forgot! David from Valley Center popping in as we try and put a 1-year old down for bed.
A3:Send out a survey to Ss seeing what they want in their room or what would work best for them.
I dont have room 4 a class set of desks & other seating, how do you manage testing? Still let them choose?
A3: My Ss & I came up with the guidelines. They came up with the same things I would have. It was OUR classroom, not MY classroom.
A3: model what you want, bring them into decision making and TRUST them.
Good question. https://t.co/zVN2Szoecw
I dont have room 4 a class set of desks & other seating, how do you manage testing? Still let them choose?
Go garage selling-find some old coffee tables & other options for cheap!! Then remove some of the desks and set up spots
My 6th graders help me move furniture/redesign our class space throughout the year.
Group them differently, push some to the side, I took the legs off one to have a floor table!
I really think so 2! I know I will just have to be patient! That can b hard 4 me! ;)
Yes they can go anywhere anytime. Some still sit at desks https://t.co/GDpcRhJNQH
I dont have room 4 a class set of desks & other seating, how do you manage testing? Still let them choose?
A3: Continue to ask Ss what is working/ what is not working. They will be honest. Sometimes too honest. 😯
We put up testing folders (barriers) made of manila folders. Totally not a big deal ;)
A3: I think Ss need voice/choice on many things, not just seating. Choice ⬆️ S motivation and S engagement.
A4) Get class to each come up with idea. Vote on best 6.
Then get class to workshop best 6
By that point they should know where they learn best!
A3: 1st day of school activity? Decide the rules as a class, determine positioning, do a google form to survey, depends on grade!
Hi
Carl from Avonsleigh Australia
A3: ask them, have frequent discussions/morning meetings, observation will let you know
A3: Have student input when making guidelines and expectations. Ss have to have ownership and buy-in.
Absolutely. It's even more important during testing.
My morning meeting helps with expectations and we practice what it should look like!
A3) Let them design room. I always let Ss choose their seating knowing I would redesign if they couldn't handle it. Never a prob
A3-This year will start w/my plan & then ask my 5th graders to help me plan the entire room. In past they've helped me a little.
Yes!! Let them choose! Mine are third graders, they knew not to sit by anyone! https://t.co/VY1IX3gsjH
I dont have room 4 a class set of desks & other seating, how do you manage testing? Still let them choose?
We have talked about having S discuss where they study/read/write best. How can we create that in my classroom? (HS level)
Allow Ss to explore options and create expectations for each.
This is so important! https://t.co/jZT3gRP2qj
A3: I think Ss need voice/choice on many things, not just seating. Choice ⬆️ S motivation and S engagement.
A3: just like everything else- talk with the kids...we usually come up with the same guidelines that I would have on my own
A3 Saw this earlier, a T had her Ss write names on Post-Its & stick on board under where they learn best. Floor, standing, etc.
I told kids they could bring a pillow/blanket/yoga mat/game chair from home. I never spent a dime.
We had that in a few rooms this yr. Yoga balls, the seat cushions, and stools. Still choice seating, even w/ desks
Hi Tim
Hope it's a nice evening
Cold here
Q3: . I have started asking for input on rubrics, trying to create buy in
A3 One of our 5th grade Ts used a Google form to get feedback from her kids about the seating and choice
A3-Great question b/c the room should be prepared to go the first day of school so I'm wondering that too...
My students have their special day they get to choose first.
A3: Be open to changing! Whatever it may be. We have MANY discussions in my room.
I have alternate chair types like yoga balls. I've also added low desks by taking out legs as well and tall in back.
A3 Some of our Ts also had teams earn special seating by showing a specific social skill (enthusiasm, mindfulness, cooperation)
I had combo of trad desks grouped up, camp chairs, and table with chairs with srs. Floor also option https://t.co/V5GM73dKcg
We have talked about having S discuss where they study/read/write best. How can we create that in my classroom? (HS level)
I have tables and chairs, theater seats, no assigned seating, and I still hear this sometimes. :)
this is the best! My firsties prob wont appreciate it, but I love it!!
A3: such great ideas are being shared.
Ss can usually handle these things. We just have to get them chance to do it. Seating arrangements or setups always excite Ss
Lots of kids like the floor. Some like regular chairs. It's fascinating!
A3: allow them to develop structure and bring stuff from home. Like this idea!
A3: I surveyed my Ss & they like art tables but want lap desks to sit on floor so I ordered some! https://t.co/TFxMIck9jR
Creatures of Habit Syndrome?
This flex seating is new and Ps needed my room "done". We changed then multiple times throughout the year https://t.co/sr5hpq5XwT
A3-Great question b/c the room should be prepared to go the first day of school so I'm wondering that too...
Hey all, jumping in late tonight! Kara from Hutch, 6th gr.
A3. My question is what if you only have say 1 of a certain type of seat and tons of other types and multiples race to get the on?
Also as a 1st yr teacher I'm wondering, how did your admin respond to flexible seating in your classrooms?
Bringing stuff from home is an awesome idea! Low budget!
As an admin, I love when teachers want to try something new that has what's good for kids at the heart of it :)
Set your expectations -- no racing to the certain spot.
Elem. I see using clips for those special seats to rotate? Just idea.
How do you handle Ss that can't choose wisely, and you must choose for them?
You have to figure out what you'll do in this situation! My Ss are getting better at positive conflict. https://t.co/5NwcBkZlvb
I get annoyed when someone sits in my chair n the teachers lounge. We just talk about appropriate response https://t.co/ttTLz7n3mi
Creatures of Habit Syndrome?
I tracked who used the couch and bean bags and they couldn't use them again until everyone had a chance if they wanted
So true! Love https://t.co/qJb6PW88NL
Ss can usually handle these things. We just have to get them chance to do it. Seating arrangements or setups always excite Ss
I find admin say they like it but then when they see it they don't
Hi! It's Carmen joining late, but I had to as was a game changer for me!
A3: Ss designing room could be a great mini PBL activity
People ask me if the kids wobbling worries me. I say they always wobbled even in trad furniture!
Discuss! And then I let them earn the choice back.
Was supported after I showed research as success stories!
suggests rock, paper, scissors! https://t.co/evziKZcocj
A3. My question is what if you only have say 1 of a certain type of seat and tons of other types and multiples race to get the on?
I have some ideas on how to do Kagan w it but does anyone have any experience?
With lots of discussion!! And they never lost it forever! Always opportunity to try again! https://t.co/dYBk08CTf8
How do you handle Ss that can't choose wisely, and you must choose for them?
But if it's not totally prepared it would be their room to design. https://t.co/oZUe6Nbis7
A3-Great question b/c the room should be prepared to go the first day of school so I'm wondering that too...
A4 This is a big one for me, because no one in my building has done this yet.
That is what I am hoping. Some of our kids would outfit my room if I let them. So I might.
A4: Persuasive Letter Writing Activity! Make your students convince admins and parents why it helps their improve learning!
A4- I am hoping that it will show itself. Students will be more engaged! I find Ps to be pretty on board when I explain the whys
Help your Ss understand that flexible seating is about finding a place where THEY work best, not a chance to sit in a fancy chair.
and in the end look at the engagement. Trad furniture encourages staring in space and sleeping.
it's all about communication with all parties involved to convey intent of alt. Seating
A4 The best way to convince people is to SHOW them. Invite admin and parents.
A4. Ps only needed the reactions of their Ss to be convinced! Admins only needed to take a peek to see how it worked!
A4: Show them data! Someone already said - lots of support for students with exceptionalities and flexible seating.
We use desk groups of 4 for whole group time for Kagan strategies, but then have flexible seating for independent work
A4: It allows Ss to build self-awareness, be accountable for their learning, and do the best they can! Why not do ?
I was thinking about this too...could you have teams with meeting spots? Just might not be a desk
I sent out a parent letter explaining it and the reasons for flexible seating. I had all positive feedback
A4) Invite them into your classroom to observe that great learning can take place. Let Ss talk about how they benefit from it.
A4: I am hoping to educate my parents through my students. Feedback and working through this together.
Some people equate neat and orderly to good learning
A4 As an admin, I love when my teachers want to try something new. But if needed maybe you can provide research, blog posts?
A4: So happy my admin let me take the risk. If it didn't work, we could always bring the desks back in.
Yes! Look up his three ways to solve conflict!! https://t.co/b5hxDfejgR
suggests rock, paper, scissors! https://t.co/evziKZcocj
A3. My question is what if you only have say 1 of a certain type of seat and tons of other types and multiples race to get the on?
A4: Share research & success stories with admin. My Ss take care of parents! Tell them home much they love it & how they work.
A3 We discussed what was working and what wasn't! My room design changed a lot during the year based on the Ss opinions
A4: only other T complain about too much bouncing. I say it doesn't bother me or the others, why does it bother you? No Answer.
I love this! https://t.co/QcDYncjOJz
A4: Persuasive Letter Writing Activity! Make your students convince admins and parents why it helps their improve learning!
A4-Share the research, allow for traditional seating for anyone needing it, discuss "physical" benefits, share guidelines 4 choice
A4 I sent pic to parents of their kids engaged. Provided feedback for patents to see it working and in action.
A4: Just imagining that doing the research & providing the info to parents & admin would go a long way.
A4 why wouldn't Ps and admin want their Ss to be in an environment where they learn best??? Invite them in to see for themselves!
Didn't happen for very long in my room. The 1 chair they all wanted they finally went to a rotation for it https://t.co/HFDEJhao4p
A3. My question is what if you only have say 1 of a certain type of seat and tons of other types and multiples race to get the on?
A4 be passionate about it. If you show you have thought it out and really believe in it, it will be an easier sell.
A4 We are fortunate that our adm usually ask "Is it best for kids?" and will support that.
A4 I also loved visiting other schools w/ flexible furniture w/ Ts and admin. Sometimes seeing it in action makes a difference!
A4) I think a lot of parents already know how their child is comfortable. Just explain it this way
A4: S testimonials, admin. walkthroughs, and research to justify it.
Get prepared with research, look to and folks chatting here to help you make your case.
A4: our administration is very supportive and knows a little about this topic already. Input on parents would be great.
Yay, that's awesome, and as it should be!
Yes! https://t.co/dFU2PUA3Tq
A3 We discussed what was working and what wasn't! My room design changed a lot during the year based on the Ss opinions
Organization is key. Everyone gets a turn! The moment it becomes abused then it is YOURS. let them change as needed
A4-invite them in to see it in action.Let them know there's a plan in place for kids who want their own desk.
A4 Welcome them to come and visit the classroom. The engagement of Ss will speak for itself. You are doing what is best for Ss.
I post my Kagan groups on the board and have them grouped on the carpet for whole group.
A4: I take tons of pics & videos and upload to to share with Ps (+ other stakeholders.) Makes my class transparent.
A4: Then providing action research from your own classroom would firm up support. How does flexible seating support st learning?
A4: Have students share reflections on their seating choice and why it works best for them on .
A4 We also talked a lot about real life- in real life we work on couches, on the floor, at a table, not in a specific place.
YES! Well said, ! https://t.co/kWbImSCvxd
A4: It allows Ss to build self-awareness, be accountable for their learning, and do the best they can! Why not do ?
I have three other teachers at other levels that do it. I am just revamping my room again to get a variety.
I videoed a tour of my room before school so parents could see!
Yes! There's nothing wrong with inviting others into our rooms! What are we hiding? https://t.co/v3WIw0Di5F
A4 Welcome them to come and visit the classroom. The engagement of Ss will speak for itself. You are doing what is best for Ss.
A4: Invite them in to see for themselves. Post pictures on classroom social media. Invite students to share their feedback.
A4: equate 2 Starbucks. choose what works best for you when go there. Task & mood change daily & alter choice.
A4: Seriously, what adult ALWAYS works in the EXACT same spot? Read in bed/couch; work on computer w/tv tray or at kitchen table
Admin have to learn to trust teachers and encourage and support rather than criticise.
I also sent pictures ahead of time to the parents to show them the choices. They were to discuss with their kids!
A4 I have a hokki stool in my office and I always invite parents to sit on it!
A4: someone at said that we aren't preparing kids for jobs in cubicles, why do our classrooms look like it?
I do this too! It's fantastic! So much positive feedback too.
Love this idea. https://t.co/9hUzU4YvOT
A4: Have students share reflections on their seating choice and why it works best for them on .
A2: Ts must consider their own tolerance for movement, noise, and mess. If you can't lighten your control it won't be successful.
Anyone have links to research?
I am picturing a quick google form to track this in the morning. That would make it easy to digitize.
A4: Show some examples of flexible seating in the "real world" Just look at Google's office spaces. Lots of flexible seating.
although it does take a bit to not get sea sick from them bouncing 😆
A4:Invite Ps and admin in. Show how the Ss embrace the setting and how learning is going on
A4: I post pictures on my class FB page all the time to let parents get a look at our . Panoramic is great!
They really don't need to bounce. LOL
My kids have Kagan groups. When I want them in groups, I just say get in groups. They find a spot together https://t.co/wobieDlKvq
I have some ideas on how to do Kagan w it but does anyone have any experience?
A4: Show the validity & keep at it! You may have to make adjustments, but don't give up. Anything that gives Ss choice is golden.
How many of you can sit at your desk in the same seat all day?
A3: Letting the students help make lesson and rubric
And how many people work from home? I don't sit at a desk when I'm working at home!
We use small group tables, pillows, yoga ball seats, and I want some bean bags and mats for next year.
That was a big factor for one of our Ts after she sat at a training day for 8hrs in a sucky seat
Kept list in corner of whiteboard & wrote their name when they used it. This way it was always visible
I feel very fortunate to work at a forward thinking school with awesome administrators that support
I saw this today on Twitter and it has many links and ideas. .
Yes!! And u may not like it the first month. Give it time! https://t.co/A1avKvGhZY
A2: Ts must consider their own tolerance for movement, noise, and mess. If you can't lighten your control it won't be successful.
I would love for to come and help me adjust what I have started with flex seating. https://t.co/7JmIFohn1p
Get prepared with research, look to and folks chatting here to help you make your case.
A4: have the students buy in first and get them excited
YES!!!! https://t.co/snyz3QcBQ3
A2: Ts must consider their own tolerance for movement, noise, and mess. If you can't lighten your control it won't be successful.
We are hiding our greatest asset: Young creative minds! Gotta share what we are building! https://t.co/sHoe9HuSrT

Check out for ideas on & . Based my room off of hers!
We don't have a lot of space for that. Also, had problems with clips being removed "accidentally"
Would be hard if admin not on board, Bc u will probably have Ps who are Leary! https://t.co/yH2YqGpfEb

Research labs have stools and standing lab benches, while connected to these are offices with desks and chairs.

A5. I am considering repurposing some furniture I already have. Our district is blessed to have a library foundation for grants
A5 some from parent donations too, once kids got excited the parents wanted more! :)
A5 great question. Furniture can be expensive, and even if it is cheap, it adds up. Have resources for some, but not all I want.
Would love to go through our district's storage!
Buy, Sell, Trade! My house! Donations! Garage Sales!
Anyone use contracts for # flexibleseating in middle school?

A2: the procedures that will help make the day successful, having a place for everything and being organized
A5: . Haven't brought in, but I do organize desks/stools/chairs/whatever in a different way per activity plus allow student choice.
A5: Two people in my building were tossing couches. I escorted them to my room. Working on grant for more variety

A5: Making items from Pinterest-ie. crate seat. Family. My basement.
I also snagged theater seats from the auditorium during bond renovations. I am a scrounger.
For what little I have I use PTA & my own money. Thinking of sharing vision w/parents & to add to what I have.
OMG!! We need to get on this ASAP! I am texting right now! (not kidding) :)
A5: Ideas: garage sales, asking on FB, donors choose, PTO, and as always, your own dollar.
A5: Lots of garage sales and repurposing anything I can
