#LostAtNPS Hi All, A strategy I'll continue to use is to clarify the Ss concern until I'm gotten to its root and there are seemingly no others.

  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:36 PM EDT
Q1: Rushed empathy is flagged as a potential bump in the road to executing Plan B to its potential. Share one strategy you have used/will use to avoid this pitfall. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsBresnahanNMS Mar 22 @ 8:36 PM EDT
I'm here! And yes, thank goodness it's almost Friday! :) #LostAtNPS
  • horton_sara Mar 22 @ 8:36 PM EDT
I try to understand what the exact issue is by asking open ended questions and strategize from there #LostAtNPS
  • JSkowronekNMS Mar 22 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A1. I have to remember that I don't know what is going on in my Ss head, so I have to be sure to ask questions and listen so that I can best help my S. REALLY LISTEN to the answers. #LostAtNPS
  • jessica_iozzi Mar 22 @ 8:37 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A1 ask clarifying questions to hopefully get the whole story

  • MrsWelchJCS1 Mar 22 @ 8:38 PM EDT
    #LostAtNPS Ready!
  • EmilieOTR Mar 22 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A1 I plan to start who, what, where questions with S, allow enough wait time for answers, not try to fix or eliminate the problem ASAP. Empathy allows us to see the child’s perspective and notice the why behind the behavior. Change my mindset. #LostAtNPS
  • RWhelan258 Mar 22 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Actively listening to students and asking follow up questions. Not assuming that we know everything going on inside their head. #LostAtNPS
  • NPSPPS Mar 22 @ 8:39 PM EDT
  • jcteachfirsties Mar 22 @ 8:39 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A1: Taking a deep breath and remembering to use active listening - trying not to think about the next step and stay in the moment.
  • jtones_206 Mar 22 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A1: i try to make an effort to touch base with the student before or after class or during moments when the class is doing independent work in order to slowly build that bond with Ss in hopes that it does not seem rushed or disingenuous #LostAtNPS
  • MrsLyonsNPS Mar 22 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Q1: Setting up a time where if extra time is needed is crucial. A student should never feel like a teacher is trying to rush the listening and understanding of how he/she is feeling and what he/she is communicating. Students need to feel *valued* during this process. #LostAtNPS
  • SJGauv Mar 22 @ 8:39 PM EDT
I keep repeating back to the child what he has said to me until we both agree that I’ve got it! #LostAtNPS
  • MrsBresnahanNMS Mar 22 @ 8:39 PM EDT
One strategy that is very helpful is setting enough time aside to talk to the Ss. #LostAtNPS
  • SusanSegaloff Mar 22 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A1 I use short quick questions: What's up? Anything else? A detail or 2 to clarify? I'm not quite sure I understand? #LostAtNPS
    In reply to @ZajacSLP
  • diana_savage Mar 22 @ 8:40 PM EDT
I think a good strategy may ne to remind myself to be an active listener and make sure to revert to this strategy if the S isn't opening up as easily as in some of the scenarios. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsCarriereLGN Mar 22 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A1 I plan on asking questions, and listening to the answers. Repeating what I hear so that the S knows I am listening. #LostAtNPS
  • MsBirkett Mar 22 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A1 I think taking the whole process one step at a time - if you aren’t thinking about what the overall solution will be, then you won’t be as eager to jump to it. Focusing on the empathy step and empathy only. #LostAtNPS
  • mgodfreynhs Mar 22 @ 8:40 PM EDT
    Here! Hello everyone! #LostAtNPS
  • NPSPPS Mar 22 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1: I think that allowing the student TIME to think and share their concerns is super important. We need to make sure they have shared all that they want to minus interruptions from us #lostatnps
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:41 PM EDT
So important to resist the urge to "fix". Great point, Emilie! #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS
  • mahoneyschnip Mar 22 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1: I have massive ADD I think because I was overwhelmed at the summarizing student concern part, but that’s EXACTLY what I need to do! Slows down the process/ requires recapping before rushing #LostAtNPS
  • MrsKearney_NHS Mar 22 @ 8:41 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS. A1- Don't try to finish a student's sentence/ thoughts, let them finish what they are trying to day. I tend to be guilty of this, going to actively work on it.
  • nnunes30 Mar 22 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1: Being in the moment and actively listen - be aware of empathy. Remember everyone is facing their own conflicts - big or small. #behuman #LostAtNPS
  • jessica_iozzi Mar 22 @ 8:41 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A1 stop thinking about solutions for the moment and just listen to what is being communicated by the student
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:41 PM EDT
YES! Do not assume to know all the parts to the story. Listening is essential to true empathy. #LostAtNPS
    • RWhelan258 Mar 22 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Actively listening to students and asking follow up questions. Not assuming that we know everything going on inside their head. #LostAtNPS
  • HAYSchoolNorton Mar 22 @ 8:42 PM EDT
  • C_McDonough2018 Mar 22 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A!: Make sure I give S enough time to respond. #LostAtNPS
  • LisaLovesmr Mar 22 @ 8:42 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A1: I’d like to try to using Dr. Greene’s reflective listening and clarifying statements. Sometimes kids are reluctant to talk so statement like, “Can you say more about that?” seem like they’d be helpful.
  • KimBray03 Mar 22 @ 8:43 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A 1. Actively listen and remember to take time with the student.
  • EmilieOTR Mar 22 @ 8:43 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS I agree. This is often the most challenging aspect of a discussion with a young student...wait time!
    In reply to @jcteachfirsties
  • MsTaylorsOwls Mar 22 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A1. I will try to release control and make sure the student is getting my full attention. This is a hard concept for me but I know it’s important! It’s necessary to make the process work #LostatNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:44 PM EDT
Exactly this! "No child should feel rushed". So important. Pace can make or break the success of any intention. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS
  • alisontosches Mar 22 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A1: Don't rush the process. You need to earn trust and that will happen by respecting what Ss have to say. Really listen, repeat back what the student is saying, ask questions. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsWelchJCS1 Mar 22 @ 8:45 PM EDT
Q1/A1-Reminding myself that "my" preconceived notion might be wrong- I'll be a "listener"-#LostAtNPS
  • NortonSchools Mar 22 @ 8:46 PM EDT
    #LostAtNPS ready to go
  • Megberry74 Mar 22 @ 8:47 PM EDT
I tend to have a fast paced personality. I have learned from great teachers to take the time to wait for the student to respond. It takes time to build a trust relationship. #LostAtNPS
  • SLP_HAY Mar 22 @ 8:47 PM EDT
@SLP_HAY #LostAtNPS A1: exactly that, ‘rushed’. I think one strategy I would try to employ is time, time to process what the S is saying and feeling and how to respond.
  • MrsMcGarryNMS Mar 22 @ 8:47 PM EDT
Tracy here ... late. Crazy week. Hi all! #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:48 PM EDT
Q2: Missing and skipping steps are described as additional potential risks with in Plan B. When you are faced with implementing multi-step or complex plans, what are some “go to” strategies you tend to turn to to ensure you stay "on track"? #LostAtNPS
  • JerushaBjork Mar 22 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A1 #LostAtNPS Set aside time to truly listen. I think this is difficult at times...but having time to listen, reiterate, ask questions etc...will lead to true empathy.
  • NortonSchools Mar 22 @ 8:48 PM EDT
Q1/A1. Private direct eye contact, listen and shake my head to show understanding and try not to respond except for “I understand” #LostAtNPS
  • HAYSchoolNorton Mar 22 @ 8:48 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A1: it is never a bad idea to ask a student a clarifying question, so you really can understand what they're trying to tell you.
  • EmilieOTR Mar 22 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A2To prioritize the lagging skills that are the most challenging for the S. Look at options to address skill deficits-lagging skills and choose the easiest option agreed upon with S to implement first. #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:49 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A2: Flow charts can be helpful ways to symbolize key steps to complex and constraint bound porcesses without the weight or visual noise of words and excess language.
  • JSkowronekNMS Mar 22 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A2. Checklists and notes are KEY to making sure that I don't miss any steps. While I LOVE my tech, I NEED paper for organization. I would create a checklist with a timeline to be certain to not miss anything. Those really work for me. #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:49 PM EDT
Great advice from @diana_savage Self-cueing is going to be essential for being a true listener in the empathy stage. Our own self-awareness will be challenged. #LostAtNPS
    • diana_savage Mar 22 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1 I think a good strategy may ne to remind myself to be an active listener and make sure to revert to this strategy if the S isn't opening up as easily as in some of the scenarios. #LostAtNPS#LostAtNPS
  • SLP_HAY Mar 22 @ 8:49 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A2: key would be to have a copy of the plan B flowchart ready to reference along with the list of drilling strategies provided in the book; also don’t expect to get everything right straight out of the gate, leave room for adjustments
    In reply to @ZajacSLP
  • LisaLovesmr Mar 22 @ 8:49 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A2: I’m a visual learner, so a flowchart, like Dr. Greene has on page 289 might be helpful for me.
  • mgodfreynhs Mar 22 @ 8:49 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS Learning to become better listeners can be powerful! Listen, restate what Ss say and fish again for further information! Perhaps we're just too in a hurry to move our curriculum along and we forget to take the time? After all, our Ss are the reason why we teach!
  • MrsCorreiraHAY Mar 22 @ 8:50 PM EDT
    #LostAtNPS A1-I tend 2 go "all in" & fight 4 a student with everything that I have 110%-Usually it's driven by empathy-so yes-coming from a good place-but I've been trying 2 slow myself down-take a step back & learn 2 "balance" the ❤ with the head & think things out more.
  • NortonSchools Mar 22 @ 8:50 PM EDT
Take the time just you would want someone to provide you #LostAtNPS
    In reply to @alisontosches
  • nnunes30 Mar 22 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A2: Practice, practice, practice. Keep working on being aware of how the flow should go. #LostAtNPS
  • HAYSchoolNorton Mar 22 @ 8:50 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A2: there has to be consistent follow-up and implementation status checks; you can make the best presentation or get the new and latest best program, but if you do not have proper follow-through and checking back for understanding, the execution will fail.
#LostAtNPS
  • MrsMcGarryNMS Mar 22 @ 8:51 PM EDT
Girl, you know I still love my paper! I make a fresh to do list every single morning, carrying over what didn’t get done the day before. So satisfying to cross things off - you can’t get that through technology. #LostAtNPS
    In reply to @JSkowronekNMS
  • jcteachfirsties Mar 22 @ 8:51 PM EDT
    #LostAtNPS A2: I agree @LisaLovesmr - I would need the flowchart too.
  • RWhelan258 Mar 22 @ 8:51 PM EDT
A2: I jot down notes and to do’s so I don’t forget to do something. The days can become so hectic and it’s easy to forget to circle back around. #LostAtNPS
  • NortonSchools Mar 22 @ 8:51 PM EDT
I think we want to solve something and S want to be listened too #LostAtNPS
    In reply to @jessica_iozzi
  • JeniferCarline Mar 22 @ 8:51 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS trying to keep up and hardboil a dozen eggs. You know...when your child tells you at night that she needs to bring in 12 hard boiled eggs for an activity tomorrow!
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:51 PM EDT
I think when we start to believe we understand a student, it is intuitive to want to tell them we feel that way--- and sometimes it comes out in the way of finishing sentences. A difficult but important thing to keep a tab on as it isn't always what a student needs... #LostAtNPS
    In reply to @MrsKearney_NHS
  • KimBray03 Mar 22 @ 8:51 PM EDT
A2. I write lists and write out steps. I've even written out key phrases I want to remember to use. #LostAtNPS
  • MsBeatrice_NHS Mar 22 @ 8:51 PM EDT
A2: taking our time with the process is just as important as giving the student time to respond. Let’s make sure we really hear and understand so we can move at the right pace using plan B #LostAtNPS
  • alisontosches Mar 22 @ 8:52 PM EDT
Q2: Yes @JSkowronekNMS Check lists and timelines to keep on track. Also take the time to schedule a follow up meeting #LostAtNPS
  • MrsLyonsNPS Mar 22 @ 8:52 PM EDT
Q2: When beginning to implement Plan B I would make a "cheat sheet" to guide me. Just like anything else that's new, I will need to "do it" a few times to feel confident that I'm doing it correct and that I'm doing right by my students. #LostAtNPS
  • MrsMcGarryNMS Mar 22 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A2: Break things down into manageable steps. Bit by bit. It’s not as overwhelming and you get to the goal in the end. #LostAtNPS
  • jtones_206 Mar 22 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A2: i love lists, writing, and journaling for staying on track and checking progress! allows a paper trail as well to see how far Ss have come and gives a sense of accomplishment to make a plan and stick to it. #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:52 PM EDT
Truth: People everywhere are facing battles we know nothing about. Truth: Assume best intentions always. #LostAtNPS
    • nnunes30 Mar 22 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1: Being in the moment and actively listen - be aware of empathy. Remember everyone is facing their own conflicts - big or small. #behuman #LostAtNPS
  • mahoneyschnip Mar 22 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A2: I’m very by the book...I like to write everything down too see it spelled out/double check/highlight so as not to miss steps #LostAtNPS
  • jcteachfirsties Mar 22 @ 8:53 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A2: The more you implement, the more ingrained the steps will become. I would start with making lists and using the flow chart.
  • MsBirkett Mar 22 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A2 I’m definitely a paper-and-pencil note taker - I love to take notes during any and all meetings. Other resources would be the book’s charts and tables, practice, and reflection #LostAtNPS
  • MrsCarriereLGN Mar 22 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A 2 Notes, checklist, flowchart. I like visuals, also something to crossoff, being able to add to a list, make sure I don't miss anything #LostAtNPS
  • MsBeatrice_NHS Mar 22 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A2: also taking it one task at a time. Prioritize what it is we need to focus on #LostAtNPS
  • biochemnhs Mar 22 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A1. Talk with the student when I don’t feel rushed. Otherwise I might try to hurry this crucial step. #LostAtNPS
  • C_McDonough2018 Mar 22 @ 8:53 PM EDT
Having a copy of the flowchart for plan B would be helpful to keep me on track. #LostAtNPS
  • SusanSegaloff Mar 22 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A2 I have the student take a deep breath or 2 w/me, a moment for both of us to think, use my fingers to keep my place in the plan B process, & smile as I coach the student to talk to me #LostAtNPS
    In reply to @ZajacSLP
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 8:54 PM EDT
Great advice for understanding and empathizing with students: Slow the mind and the truth you shall find. #LostAtNPS

#LostAtNPS A1 stop thinking about solutions for the moment and just listen to what is being communicated by the student
  • Megberry74 Mar 22 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A2 For my Kinders the staff uses lots of visuals for them, e.g schedules, first and then picture charts. For the staff members a clearly written out plan, like @ZajacSLP said flow charts #LostAtNPS
  • MrsWelchJCS1 Mar 22 @ 8:54 PM EDT
    Q2/ Love those post-its-color coaded with key words-reminders, etc.#LostAtNPS

#LostAtNPS A2 I like @ZajacSLP idea of a flow chart to keep you on track!
  • JeniferCarline Mar 22 @ 8:55 PM EDT
Q2.A2. I think that I will utilize the “Drilling Cheat Sheet” (p. 291-293) to stay on track & keep this info fresh in my mind. #LostAtNPS
  • diana_savage Mar 22 @ 8:56 PM EDT
My first strategy is to practice on my husband! Then I make a step by step floe chart and reviee and practice....it also help to practice on a student with a non threatening problem...ehich sllow you to practice and gives that student some extra tlc too!! #LostAtNPS
  • catherineluke49 Mar 22 @ 8:56 PM EDT
Hi! Sorry I’m late. We had K Open House tonight. #LostAtNPS
  • mgodfreynhs Mar 22 @ 8:56 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A2. A flow chart is a smooth way to keep track while conversing with Ss and also to maintain record of our information to remember later on!
  • NortonSchools Mar 22 @ 8:56 PM EDT
Q2/A2. My go to is to never make a plan without consulting with others and always doing it with someone else especially when it comes to student issue #LostAtNPS
  • C_McDonough2018 Mar 22 @ 8:57 PM EDT
  • MsTaylorsOwls Mar 22 @ 8:57 PM EDT
A2. I reread BSPs weekly and IEP objectives monthly to keep refreshed and give myself a memory jolt. I would imagine I will do the same with these steps while I’m learning to implement effectively! #LostatNPS
  • MrsBresnahanNMS Mar 22 @ 8:57 PM EDT
A2 I too would need the flowchart. I need a visual that I could refer to when needed. #LostAtNPS

The non-verbal validation and demonstration of rapt attention is an extremely powerful way to navigate the empathy stage with maximized understanding. #LostAtNPS

A2: Reminding myself to slow down and work at the student's pace. Remember to really listen, focus and be present. #lostatnps
  • catherineluke49 Mar 22 @ 8:59 PM EDT
I’ve started to take the time to reiterate student concerns. It helps children to feel validated. #LostAtNPS
    • JerushaBjork Mar 22 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A1 #LostAtNPS Set aside time to truly listen. I think this is difficult at times...but having time to listen, reiterate, ask questions etc...will lead to true empathy.
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 9:00 PM EDT
Q3: Judgement-free relationships w Ss can be challenged in “the invitation” step of Plan B if suggestions aren’t realistic/ mutually satisfactory. How do time, verbal communication & non-verbal comm. influence integrity of relationships in challenging conversations? #LostAtNPS
  • JSkowronekNMS Mar 22 @ 9:01 PM EDT
A3. Ss are pretty good at reading adults. If T isn't truly invested in the process, the Ss will know. Ts also have to be sure to find out what Ss are thinking and validate Ss thoughts - even if they may seem silly to us. #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 9:01 PM EDT
#LostAtNPS A3:They challenge it BIG TIME! Human tendency to respond reflexively is usually fast & accompanied by facial expressions, vocal effects & words which reveal degree of alignment instantly.Tempering knee-jerk reactions is essential for productive, vulnerable collaboration
  • ScienceFardy Mar 22 @ 9:01 PM EDT
A1 I need to make sure I am focusing on the student I’m talking to and not allowing myself to be distracted from the conversation. Usually this means settting aside time the next day to chat instead of in the moment #LostAtNPS
  • ZajacSLP Mar 22 @ 9:01 PM EDT
It all comes back to our WHY! We are educators because we care. Caring is not something that can be rushed. #LostAtNPS

#LostAtNPS A3: if you want a student to truly open up and give you authentic, candid responses, in no way, shape, or form can you convey to them any level of disinterest, whether it is your tone, facial expressions, or giving an iota of rushing them. Do that/they will shut down.
