Q1: Rushed empathy is flagged as a potential bump in the road to executing Plan B to its potential. Share one strategy you have used/will use to avoid this pitfall. #LostAtNPS
A1. I have to remember that I don't know what is going on in my Ss head, so I have to be sure to ask questions and listen so that I can best help my S. REALLY LISTEN to the answers. #LostAtNPS
A1 I plan to start who, what, where questions with S, allow enough wait time for answers, not try to fix or eliminate the problem ASAP. Empathy allows us to see the child’s perspective and notice the why behind the behavior. Change my mindset. #LostAtNPS
A1: i try to make an effort to touch base with the student before or after class or during moments when the class is doing independent work in order to slowly build that bond with Ss in hopes that it does not seem rushed or disingenuous #LostAtNPS
Q1: Setting up a time where if extra time is needed is crucial. A student should never feel like a teacher is trying to rush the listening and understanding of how he/she is feeling and what he/she is communicating. Students need to feel *valued* during this process. #LostAtNPS
I think a good strategy may ne to remind myself to be an active listener and make sure to revert to this strategy if the S isn't opening up as easily as in some of the scenarios. #LostAtNPS
A1 I think taking the whole process one step at a time - if you aren’t thinking about what the overall solution will be, then you won’t be as eager to jump to it. Focusing on the empathy step and empathy only. #LostAtNPS
A1: I think that allowing the student TIME to think and share their concerns is super important. We need to make sure they have shared all that they want to minus interruptions from us #lostatnps

A1: I have massive ADD I think because I was overwhelmed at the summarizing student concern part, but that’s EXACTLY what I need to do! Slows down the process/ requires recapping before rushing #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS. A1- Don't try to finish a student's sentence/ thoughts, let them finish what they are trying to day. I tend to be guilty of this, going to actively work on it.
#LostAtNPS A1: I’d like to try to using Dr. Greene’s reflective listening and clarifying statements. Sometimes kids are reluctant to talk so statement like, “Can you say more about that?” seem like they’d be helpful.
A1. I will try to release control and make sure the student is getting my full attention. This is a hard concept for me but I know it’s important! It’s necessary to make the process work #LostatNPS

A1: Don't rush the process. You need to earn trust and that will happen by respecting what Ss have to say. Really listen, repeat back what the student is saying, ask questions. #LostAtNPS
I tend to have a fast paced personality. I have learned from great teachers to take the time to wait for the student to respond. It takes time to build a trust relationship. #LostAtNPS
@SLP_HAY#LostAtNPS A1: exactly that, ‘rushed’. I think one strategy I would try to employ is time, time to process what the S is saying and feeling and how to respond.
Q2: Missing and skipping steps are described as additional potential risks with in Plan B. When you are faced with implementing multi-step or complex plans, what are some “go to” strategies you tend to turn to to ensure you stay "on track"? #LostAtNPS
A1
#LostAtNPS Set aside time to truly listen. I think this is difficult at times...but having time to listen, reiterate, ask questions etc...will lead to true empathy.
A2To prioritize the lagging skills that are the most challenging for the S. Look at options to address skill deficits-lagging skills and choose the easiest option agreed upon with S to implement first. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A2: Flow charts can be helpful ways to symbolize key steps to complex and constraint bound porcesses without the weight or visual noise of words and excess language.
A2. Checklists and notes are KEY to making sure that I don't miss any steps. While I LOVE my tech, I NEED paper for organization. I would create a checklist with a timeline to be certain to not miss anything. Those really work for me. #LostAtNPS
Great advice from @diana_savage Self-cueing is going to be essential for being a true listener in the empathy stage. Our own self-awareness will be challenged. #LostAtNPS
A1 I think a good strategy may ne to remind myself to be an active listener and make sure to revert to this strategy if the S isn't opening up as easily as in some of the scenarios. #LostAtNPS#LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A2: key would be to have a copy of the plan B flowchart ready to reference along with the list of drilling strategies provided in the book; also don’t expect to get everything right straight out of the gate, leave room for adjustments
#LostAtNPS Learning to become better listeners can be powerful! Listen, restate what Ss say and fish again for further information! Perhaps we're just too in a hurry to move our curriculum along and we forget to take the time? After all, our Ss are the reason why we teach!
#LostAtNPS A1-I tend 2 go "all in" & fight 4 a student with everything that I have 110%-Usually it's driven by empathy-so yes-coming from a good place-but I've been trying 2 slow myself down-take a step back & learn 2 "balance" the ❤ with the head & think things out more.
#LostAtNPS A2: there has to be consistent follow-up and implementation status checks; you can make the best presentation or get the new and latest best program, but if you do not have proper follow-through and checking back for understanding, the execution will fail.
Q2: Missing and skipping steps are described as additional potential risks with in Plan B. When you are faced with implementing multi-step or complex plans, what are some “go to” strategies you tend to turn to to ensure you stay "on track"? #LostAtNPS
Girl, you know I still love my paper! I make a fresh to do list every single morning, carrying over what didn’t get done the day before. So satisfying to cross things off - you can’t get that through technology. #LostAtNPS
A2: I jot down notes and to do’s so I don’t forget to do something. The days can become so hectic and it’s easy to forget to circle back around. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS trying to keep up and hardboil a dozen eggs. You know...when your child tells you at night that she needs to bring in 12 hard boiled eggs for an activity tomorrow!
I think when we start to believe we understand a student, it is intuitive to want to tell them we feel that way--- and sometimes it comes out in the way of finishing sentences. A difficult but important thing to keep a tab on as it isn't always what a student needs... #LostAtNPS
A2: taking our time with the process is just as important as giving the student time to respond. Let’s make sure we really hear and understand so we can move at the right pace using plan B #LostAtNPS
Q2: When beginning to implement Plan B I would make a "cheat sheet" to guide me. Just like anything else that's new, I will need to "do it" a few times to feel confident that I'm doing it correct and that I'm doing right by my students. #LostAtNPS
A2: i love lists, writing, and journaling for staying on track and checking progress! allows a paper trail as well to see how far Ss have come and gives a sense of accomplishment to make a plan and stick to it. #LostAtNPS
A2 I’m definitely a paper-and-pencil note taker - I love to take notes during any and all meetings. Other resources would be the book’s charts and tables, practice, and reflection #LostAtNPS
A2 I have the student take a deep breath or 2 w/me, a moment for both of us to think, use my fingers to keep my place in the plan B process, & smile as I coach the student to talk to me
#LostAtNPS
A2 For my Kinders the staff uses lots of visuals for them, e.g schedules, first and then picture charts. For the staff members a clearly written out plan, like @ZajacSLP said flow charts #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A1: I’d like to try to using Dr. Greene’s reflective listening and clarifying statements. Sometimes kids are reluctant to talk so statement like, “Can you say more about that?” seem like they’d be helpful.
My first strategy is to practice on my husband! Then I make a step by step floe chart and reviee and practice....it also help to practice on a student with a non threatening problem...ehich sllow you to practice and gives that student some extra tlc too!! #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A2. A flow chart is a smooth way to keep track while conversing with Ss and also to maintain record of our information to remember later on!
Q2/A2. My go to is to never make a plan without consulting with others and always doing it with someone else especially when it comes to student issue #LostAtNPS
A2. I reread BSPs weekly and IEP objectives monthly to keep refreshed and give myself a memory jolt. I would imagine I will do the same with these steps while I’m learning to implement effectively! #LostatNPS
The non-verbal validation and demonstration of rapt attention is an extremely powerful way to navigate the empathy stage with maximized understanding. #LostAtNPS
A1
#LostAtNPS Set aside time to truly listen. I think this is difficult at times...but having time to listen, reiterate, ask questions etc...will lead to true empathy.
Q3: Judgement-free relationships w Ss can be challenged in “the invitation” step of Plan B if suggestions aren’t realistic/ mutually satisfactory. How do time, verbal communication & non-verbal comm. influence integrity of relationships in challenging conversations? #LostAtNPS
A3. Ss are pretty good at reading adults. If T isn't truly invested in the process, the Ss will know. Ts also have to be sure to find out what Ss are thinking and validate Ss thoughts - even if they may seem silly to us. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A3:They challenge it BIG TIME! Human tendency to respond reflexively is usually fast & accompanied by facial expressions, vocal effects & words which reveal degree of alignment instantly.Tempering knee-jerk reactions is essential for productive, vulnerable collaboration
A1 I need to make sure I am focusing on the student I’m talking to and not allowing myself to be distracted from the conversation. Usually this means settting aside time the next day to chat instead of in the moment #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS Learning to become better listeners can be powerful! Listen, restate what Ss say and fish again for further information! Perhaps we're just too in a hurry to move our curriculum along and we forget to take the time? After all, our Ss are the reason why we teach!
A1. Sorry I'm late. Make sure that you have drilled enough. If the student isn't talking much, then chances are you've rushed the empathy step I need to go back to ask more questions.#LostatNPS
A3: Rushing the convo, doing other things when the student is talking or not making eye contact will not make for an ideal solution/response from student. Just plain rude, really. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A3: if you want a student to truly open up and give you authentic, candid responses, in no way, shape, or form can you convey to them any level of disinterest, whether it is your tone, facial expressions, or giving an iota of rushing them. Do that/they will shut down.
Q3: Judgement-free relationships w Ss can be challenged in “the invitation” step of Plan B if suggestions aren’t realistic/ mutually satisfactory. How do time, verbal communication & non-verbal comm. influence integrity of relationships in challenging conversations? #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS Keep coming back to this illustration from @peterhreynolds newest book The Word Collector. Taking the time to listen, discuss, and come to a mutual understanding.
My first strategy is to practice on my husband! Then I make a step by step floe chart and reviee and practice....it also help to practice on a student with a non threatening problem...ehich sllow you to practice and gives that student some extra tlc too!! #LostAtNPS
A3: i think it all goes back to really making sure you are listening to Ss and they feel heard. Sometimes developing a signal like they do in the text is better than saying anything verbal so there are options! #LostAtNPS
A2. Like many others have stated, checklists and visuals with all the steps are extremely helpful so you don't forget anything. This is especially important when you are just learning the process #LostatNPS
The mirror of what would I want or what would feel comfortable for me is such an accurate tool to help one gauge and regulate approach to interpersonal communication and collaboration! #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A3: you must take the time to process all being said, don’t rush it & don’t belabor it; mean what you say b/c the S will count on it and if T are not sincere, trust is lost; be conscious of any nonverbal comm-facial expressions, body lang, etc can speak volumes
A3 Non verbal communication is the most important in ensuring success because even if you tske extra time and say all the right thibgs, if you body and face anre not signaling that you care, kids will know...especially if they sre in a heightened state. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS Perhaps our behavior challenging students already feel judged by us. We need to work hard to make them understand that we are willing to change our ways to become better listeners and build better relationships with them!
A3. Sincerity with students! Having actual relationships with a student is the foundation for any of this - and actual authentic relationship. When you walk through the halls and the students say your name, your doing it right. #LostAtNPS
A3: Everyone wants to know that someone cares. Ts have such a large impact on our ss, we have to support the ss fully. Empathize, listen, support #LostAtNPS
A3. If you don't take time with a student, they are not going to feel heard or important. And how you say something is just as important as what you say. #LostatNPS
A3: It’s important to put yourself in S’s shoes when posing an invitation. Obviously, you have to be genuine, and also you have to expect that S might not always propose what you anticipated. Be prepared to not know the outcome #LostAtNPS
A3 Validation of feelings, using calm voice, tone, getting down to thier level, be relaxed, notice when you need to take a step back or table or if the S does. #LostAtNPS
A3: When working with a student it's so important to allow the time to really listen and focus. By listening, restating/ checking for understanding students will see that you are listening and interested, #lostatnps
A3 Time is important and I prefer to wait until class is over to chat with S. I try and keep my facial features with concern or straight, a smile when appropriate and listen attentively. I stopped doing the rush into question activity withSs
#LostAtNPS
@MrsMcGarryNMS you are so right! Paper can be our friend! Technology can be our friend! Flexibility in approach is what keeps us open and ready to receive in any way, shape or form! #LostAtNPS
Girl, you know I still love my paper! I make a fresh to do list every single morning, carrying over what didn’t get done the day before. So satisfying to cross things off - you can’t get that through technology. #LostAtNPS
Q3/A3. I think non verbal communication is a major issue because as educators we are real people dealing with young students and we must recognize this.....we sometimes do it better in a group then when working 1:1 and some the opposite #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A3. Try to speak in a calm tone, not sound exasperated/frustrated. Be mindful of body language - I usually will try to sit down next to a student when I need to talk to them so that I am physically on their level instead of standing over them.
A3 When talking to a student I try to think about what issues they are facing at home and at school and this has helped me keep my facial expressions in tact most of the time. Although the other day one of my kiddos asked me why I was chewing my gum fast. #LostAtNPS
A3(2): Our health lesson today was reviewing and practicing skills to effectively communicate and resolve conflicts. I’d like to say it was eye opening for some as they had to practice with one another. #nophonezone#humaninteraction#LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS A2 Admittedly-a weak area 4 me. I've been trying 2 simplify the way I do things. I tend 2 think "big" & have good intentions-but not be able 2 follow through 2 live up 2 that level-leaving me defeated. "Writing" things out rather than skipping that step does help me!
#LostAtNPS Thanks everyone for joining tonight's chat! We learn best together! Interested in checking out an EdCamp? #EdCampAccess in May is a great one! Learn more about it here: https://t.co/jKk0gkfAHy
Q3A3: In the end students can sense that we genuinely care. Even if we aren’t saying everything just like Dr. Greene suggests, students will know our ❤️ is in the right place. #LostAtNPS
A3. Your body language, facial expressions, tone, volume and cadence are all indicators for our Ss on our feelings and intentions. They have learned to read these cues from other experiences. We need to provide and model expected behaviors. #LostAtNPS
A3. Sincerity with students! Having actual relationships with a student is the foundation for any of this - and actual authentic relationship. When you walk through the halls and the students say your name, your doing it right. #LostAtNPS
#LostAtNPS Q/3 A/3-Like adults, kids can see through "fake" relationships. It's always interesting to see how a S draws their teacher-with a smiling face, showing they feel the care/respect.
I Like! I wonder if there would ever be a shared doc--- modified by grade as to be on the Ss level... but if We as teachers need visuals... what about the students?? Hmmm.... #LostAtNPS
A3: I have been finding myself telling challenging kids how proud I am of them for trying, being honest, and taking risks for opening up. I also genuinely tell them I can’t wait to see them the next day. It goes a long way! #LostAtNPS
Age old- Two heads are better than one- mantra holds water! Considering more than a unilateral perspective is essential for best chance at successful understanding of a person or situation and subsequent execution of any system or plan. #LostAtNPS
Oh YEAH! I can only speak for myself but validation is an enormously helpful way to establish connection and an "I am not aloneness" which for many people is the switch to change a problem into an opportunity. #LostAtNPS

The books I write & collaborate on are inspired by big themes that I want to world to tune into. Here's a peek at a few. I rely on educators to explore these big ideas with their students. #G2Great
