Teresa, MS Literacy Teacher, NY.
Hi, My name is Jon,a 5th grade teacher from Iowa. Best ?: What evidence from this text would you use to support your opinion?
Jeff from NS, Canada joining in!
Hi Jeff! Thanks for joining in!
Hi all! Bianca from NJ! Reading teacher 😊
Instant Relevance author, is hosting right NOW!
Hi Bianca! Where in NJ? That's where I am
Worked on a math word problem about trees and CA. Asked Ss if they watched the news about dead trees and wildfires.
Excellent Connection! My book, Instant Relevance, is all about pulling lessons FROM experiences like this
Hello! I'm Caroline, a new 5th grade teacher from NJ!
I live in Sussex Co and work in Morris Co. Howdy Neighbor!
More NJ here tonight! Awesome
Karli from San Antonio, TX
Thanks for coming! We're on Q1
Hello from Iowa... preservice teacher at UNI! I don't know what I want grade I want to teach yet, so I thought I'd join!
A1: I'm a musician, sax player and singer. I love all things music, It enters my lessons all the time/ music = connections
A1: prob pop culture
Integrating carpool karaoke and LAUNCH cycle
A1: I am a huge fan of musicals and love cooking and baking. I also love Netflix-- no shame!
Ooh! Pop culture is huge, and constantly transforming. It's always relevent to Ss!
A1: Reading "widely." Our students are accustomed to a most "focused" modality in regard to their own reading lives.
You'd love the book. I talk about music, cooking, AND TV!!!!
Gardening, volunteering, traveling, and history are some of the topics I enjoy outside of school.
love that. Read often and read to increase capacity and understanding!
A1: music and technology are 2 that I often bring in. Luckily they are both things that students like as well!
Awesome! How do you make connect these to teaching opportunities? Your kids care about you and will engage!
A1 I'm most passionate about family I like to connect our "reading stories" to real life situations teach my kids there is a...
A1 (part 2)world outside the bubble of our small school
A1: I like reading 4 enjoyment, but I'm a student, so I mostly just read 4 class. Otherwise, I like Netflix, crafting, & running!
That's great. Music is an amazing accompaniment to all learning. The ss get it, can relate to it, & using it works.
A1: I think, too, my interest in collage leads to interest in "remixing." In academic language, "synthesizing." This plus that.
I have a new puppy so I like to bring in small moment stories about him.
There's so much there, from fanhood, to fan psychology, to stats, math and geometry of the new trophy!
Question 2 Coming up in 1 minute!
sometime my little guys love when I put on Master Chef kids edition after a long week with many tests! I can relate!
So much in your crafting and running that Ss can relate to and buy into!
I teach American history, so I bring what I have learned about my family to share with the students to make history more alive
Master Chef Kids makes me sad! I don't like when the young ones are asked to go home :(
great! you're learning daily from the puppy life, they'll see you as a learner too
Reading Roller Girl right now.
That is such a great idea! I am sure the students love that you're making the information relatable to them
A2: can someone make your phone "sick"? She meant a computer virus. I actually have NO idea!
A2: My 6th grade students asked me about credit cards vs debit cards, so we had a 10 minute lesson on it.
Great unexpected Q! Lots of investigation possible
A2: Unexpected questions can lead to gaps in students background knowledge. Answering those ??s helps fill in gaps in learning.
Once a student asked if I had "always been a ginger." Got into a chat about inclusive language... some might be offended!
A2: I've often said, "Students have 'wonders;' teachers have 'questions'." Lead/Co-Learners embrace inquiry from all in room.
Awesome! Always take the time to follow them down their question roads!
A2, oops. This is only my second attempt at a Twitter chat!
True. When you step back, their misconceptions come forward, then you take the reins
A2 sometimes going off tangent allows for wonderful learning opportunities i want to help create courteous humans in my classroom
A2: What is the difference between point of view and perspective? (used True Story of 3 Pigs vs. Original)
Great idea to take it that way and not be offended. Shows strength and leadership.
Oh, and answer Qs with A1, A2 etc.. for our archive
A2: These questions lead to authentic learning! Students wouldn't ask if they didn't want to know.
A2: Why don't hamsters make good class pets?
A2: And I hope doesn't mind but begins to ask/be the answer to this question. Welcome "wonder."
How'd you answer that one
Yes! These are two are a great paired text to show students the difference between the two.
Hamsters are nocturnal and don't like to be woken during the day, just like Ss wouldn't want me waking them at night.
Q3: What changes have you experienced recently that can become relevant learning experiences? https://t.co/qDVDPvZa2r
How would you like it if I woke you up at 3:00 AM for literacy?
Give it a shot and we'll see!
I had to do some research, I admit.
Two grad school classes all year + full-time teaching = learning to prioritize
They would prob bite me just like a hamster would.
A3: my 5th graders are new to the building-- as a new teacher, I am too! We work together daily on new things in this next chapter!
Just did a training for Girl Scouts. Explained to students about life long learning.
Absolutely. Huge changes and impact. Have you used your experience in this as an example for Ss?
A3 Learned about Global Read Aloud recently. Going to try to make it happen. (now I've said it here, going to have to do it)
A3: Just summer learning with etc etc
Nice! And the ongoing experience can now be a regular way to relate and connect
Now the twitter PLN is holding you accountable!
A3: discovery of Carpool Karaoke
A3: We just had a huge storm with a microburst right over my town last week. Changed the landscape and my plans. Used as ex for Ts
A3: I've had a ton of blogging assignments recently, so I'm quickly learning how to write interesting posts and follow others
Taking them through how you learned to manage your world can help them manage theirs!
A3 Student centered learning giving kids the chance to be assessed in a way that makes sense to them and helps them succeed
Remember that pic! Yikes!
A3: Talked to the students about taking college classes over the summer. Showed them that learning is lifelong.
We have 7 questions tonight for each letter of INSTANT
the only effective blogging is blogging at all. No judgment here !
No judgement here! We are here to support and learn from each other!
A3: This is a great one that I don't consider often. New baby, house, and school! I'll try and find ways to bring these things in.
A4: I watch a lot of shows on PBS. I'm interested in antiques, nature etc. There's always something that I can bring in as a hook!
Congratulations on all of these new things in your life! Sounds busy, but exciting!
A4: I am a CNN nerd! I try and watch what they recommend (Pretty Little Liars, Walking Dead...... oh my.....)
change and disruption are when we learn the most. Be aware of your growth and you'll be able to share it!
A4 the Voice! Never give up keep on trying dreams will come true no matter the circumstance
I was able to connect sci-fi to Walking Dead.
Nice! My wife is out right now singing with an opera company! Never give up on the dreams!
A4: also love Fixer-Upper on HGTV
We have lots of activities on surving zombie apocalypse!
Made it through 6.....yes 6.....seasons of Pretty Little Liars....
Thanks! She took 12 years off to raise our kids and is getting back into it now. Dreams deferred!
A4: Dancing with the Stars maybe? Relate the stars trying something new to them with 5th graders trying new concepts?
My best friend from college was a house on Dream House in late 90s!
A4: Shark Tank!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great connection. How can you take 1 skill and use it as an advantage in another area?
A4: I have watched Ridiculousness on MTV......they watch it....have conversations
A4: I watch all the "millennial" stuff, and are my faves. My students are always surprised to hear that!
Surprised...but interested. I use clips, quotes, and stories from these as hooks to lead into my lessons
hooks me every time! I'm not ashamed! Are you watching on Netflix? Season 7 has started IRL!
A5: watching Shark Tank wanting to do this concept at some point with a class this year....
Students like to know that we are really people.. They are always surprised to see me at the grocery store
Since I'm not in classrooms 4 long periods rn, I use these in convos to build trust & est relationships
I was checking it out from library. DVD. LOL
The new puppy is now crashed on the floor. Maybe I can tweet now! More small moments.
A5: I have book How Rude! next to me, use in making cell phone etiquette brochures.
OH MY GOSH THEY LEAVE THE SCHOOL????????
That's a great thing to do. Can't wit for you to have your classes!
A5:We just got a kit with and . I look forward to finding ways to do more cross-curricularly with these
We grow our brains every day by making mistakes! That's very big in my room.
A5 Dinner time writing prompt use good describing words to tell me what your meal tastes like, looks like etc!
A4: I have used a clip from the Big Bang Theory where they use the Scientific Method. Students loved it
A5: Went to NYC and turned and saw this. So many Questions possible from it! Take a pic and show SS! https://t.co/ztN3XHPgf5
Q6: "N"--Share examples of times you harnessed the energy of an event or widespread craze in your classroom https://t.co/92QpBTic6C
Students get down on themselves and won't take risks. If I let them know I want them to make mistakes they will take risks.
Hmmmmm.........thinking........
I tell them every time my brain grows. . They love that.
A6: made a huge gaming board and did some challenges at end of year, experimenting with Gamification
A6: Recently analyzed the results of Ice Bucket Challenge last year to show huge fund diffs and huge research gains!
I can't find a student who plays it! Can you believe it?????
Then find Ts that do and turn their quest into a lesson for Ss. Make them write about Ts adventure!
A6 My summer school group loved the Lego movie would not stop singing the song turned it into a project had them build
A6 (part 2) and create their own unique Lego character they loved it
I'll admit to playing Pokemon Go! Perhaps students could calculate relative probability of sighting certain Pokemon?
You can custom 3d print lego mini figures now too! take the ideas and make them real
A6. Pokemon Go! Students are still surprised that I have the app on my phone. They are also surprised that I play video games too
Tons! Follow for more ideas!
I don't know anyone who does! LOL We must live in a bubble.....
A2:when we don't just answer them quickly, but celebrate great Qs and let their questions guide the lesson.
What? You do normal things for fun? https://t.co/6tIPydWEh9
A6. Pokemon Go! Students are still surprised that I have the app on my phone. They are also surprised that I play video games too
again, follow for great lesson ideas and connections!
A6: What about State of the Union address and other huge national events. Emmys recently do you use them?
I could never get Pokemon GO to work on my iPhone 4 =/ Even after I tried all the tricks to make it work.
We need 2 provide opportunities 4 students 2 grapple with concepts in ALL disciplines. Let's make learning relevant & meaningful.
A6.Last year we had the prison break within 30 miles of town. We talked a lot about that. Kids were scared and spreading rumors.
It wouldn't load at all? Or it wouldn't stay open? My brother had similar problems - you're not alone!
A7: right now Individuals & Societies with Language & Literature
A7: working on music history and US history. Did you know Mozart was writing during American Revolution?
A7: i'm always integrating math and art. Sometimes math to create art. Others art to display math.
A7 we are reading a story about money next week teaming up with the math teacher to make it a combined lesson
perfect opportunity. Which story?
A7: Did a project once about planning a trip to Disney World; included math, science, social studies, and a little literacy
Lots of possibilities there!
Ooh! I have and too! Ready to dig into those myself
Great ideas. Brain grew again. Will use chat in class tomorrow.
If you have some high ability learners, extend them to simple interest concept from Gr 6!
