Welcome to #flipclass introduce yourself, subject, level, yrs flipping? What are you looking forward to as the spring semester goes forward? Tonight we’re talking student choice in the flipped classroom. Share your thoughts get some ideas. :) #flipclasschat
New to twitter, first ever chat! I teach kindergarten and this is my 5th year. I've never done a flipped classroom. Looking forward to learning how others do it! #flipclass
#flipclass#flipclasschat Roy from Bama, but works with k-12 science teachers in Rome, Georgia. Flipped for 4+ years middle school science before moving to district level. Looking forward to building relationships with Ts and being a resource for them.

Hi #flipclass Katie from Allen TX. Flipped physics at HS and college level, flipped PD. Looking forward to finishing teaching a tough course and making it better. #flipclasschat
Hello #flipclass! Kim here! I taught elementary art for 3 years. I have never flipped my classroom before but it seems like a great idea for the art room.
#flipclasschat Welcome to #flipclass and Twitter. You can really find some good connections on Twitter. Talking about our trade is always a good thing.
Welcome everyone, we'll use a Q1/A1 format with occasional bonus questions thrown in as needed. We're sharing some ideas for class time and providing Ss choice. Use the hashtags #flipclass and #flipclasschat to help keep the conversation going.
Joy from Toronto has been flipping some HS math and sci lessons since 2013 and is looking forward to not having to deal with multiple layers for both kids to lose at daycare/school! #flipclass
A1 The best part of #flipclass is it usually allows for student choice. Websites like edpuzzle allow students to proceed, rewatch, and answer on their own accord. Then, we students start to create their own videos- the activity becomes built around choice.
A1: Ss have the most choice when it comes to learning content - #flipclass videos can be watched when/where Ss most prefer, can pause, restart and bring me Qs (and some Ss choose to read out of textbook instead!)
A1 Part of the big step for #flipclass - give up control. Ss get info from my videos, other videos (reviewed and suggested by me), text book reading, pick one or go for all. Just come to class ready to use the info #flipclasschat
A1 I'm thinking students will always choose more time to create than watch me in class...so they can watch from home and then create more during class. #flipclass#flipcasschat
A1 I have recently started to let my students use flexible seating. It gives them some choice in where they work. I have such young students (kinder) that I haven't felt comfortable with much choice as far as assignments. #flipclass
Usually I have multiple assignments for students about a topic and they pick. Provide fill-in notes to make note taking during the videos easier but students can use them or take their own. And they have the choice of summative - own design or mine. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1 still an area of growth or me but I have had choice between reading text or watching vids, working on practice solo or with others (#respecttheintrovertslikeme)#flipclass
I have been thinking the same thing!! I've been working to have more than one assessment but haven't quite figured out how to fit choice into it as well #flipclass
Hi! I'm Molly Christina. I teach 10th grade Bio Honors, Gen Ed, and Test Prep. I have also taught 7-10 ELA. I've been flipping for 5 years. Looking forward to adding student choice to my grading and focusing on learning/growth over grades this semester! #flipclass#flipclasschat
(in reference to teaching art) Students get to choose what to paint, draw, and form...so instruction from home sounds like a huge time-saver: Instructions outside class and make the beautiful mess with me...haha #flipclass
A2 after the panic is over, I am usually surprised at the amount of above and beyond work Ss will do when engaged in something they have chosen to do. #flipclasschat#flipclass
Hi, I'm Jessica - My students seem to enjoy choice but struggle with time management. They don't plan their time out right and end up falling behind #FlipClass
A1 - I try to remember to bring an element of choice to everything from what they use to prepare (videos, texts, combination) and how they take notes (I teach different strategies) to whether or not they prefer to work in groups for the day or to have "work time" #flipclass
Fear. You mean you won’t tell me what to do? You have to tell me what to do, that’s how it’s done. And then when they have to choose, they freeze. #flipclass#flipclasschat
(1/2) Guess it depends how grading works in your school/district. I’d probably have 9 assignments set up in my grade book and grade each according to whatever is appropriate for that choice, and NoMark those who didn’t take that option #flipclass
#flipclass#flipclasschat I've had Ss who didn't plan out their time, too. I tried to keep in mind that they are just applying and practicing. Non-summative assignments sometimes were incomplete if I got in the practice and application.
(2/2) In our province we have 4 categories of term marks, so I might not have the same criteria for all choice but would have the same weight & category
A2 Some students enjoy choice and are grateful, and others are still trying to blend into the wall and "do school". Still others try to game the system and pick what they think is easiest. This naturally leads to lessons on the goal of classwork: grades or learning? #flipclass
A3: When I flipped for the first time last year, some kids still wanted to read text, not vids..Limited direct-inst to less than 7 minutes the next day, only based on Padlet ?'s or based on quiz feedback.#flipclasschat#flipclass
I'm haven't tried flipping my classroom yet, but is seems like there will always be a handful who choose the easy way out." helpful insight. thanks. #flipclass
A3 Curious to see what and how Ss choice is involved in direct teaching. I'd think that this is the part Ss don't have as much choice in due to the nature of this part of the lesson. #flipclass
A3 - We change the grading expectation. We stopped dif tasks = diff pts. All tasks are equal and the focus is on understanding. Freed up Ss to choose tasks on what fit their learning and not what got them the most points @mschuste74#FlipClass
#flipclass#flipclasschat A3: Sometimes I'd use tic-tac-toe boards, other times it was either/or choices. I recall having S groups making review games. Afterwards, Ss played the games briefly and chose which one we'd use for the main review. Ss learned a lot in making the games.
A3: Challenging...Vids or Text have been most common...Could you post learning objectives & let kids find their way? Hold them accountable at later point...Tough, brave leap #flipclass
A3 Choice within limits helps some students. Having a "field" in which to play makes it easier to achieve goals. Too much choice is overwhelming for some #flipclass
Absolutely! I have a direct convo with them about this. I take responsibility on behalf of "adults" b/c we've set them up for failure. "If you do it the easiest way what are the chances you will learn and remember?" Ss know the answer. We discuss how to learn then. #flipclass
#flipclass#flipclasschat All choices still need T guidance. Too much group autonomy produces more straying around and away from what I want to see as a T. Choice with guidance suits me.
#flipclass I attempt to integrate as much nonlinear lesson planning as possible using Google drawings with hyperlinks that give student options and access 2 instruction resources and assessment methods
Interesting! In my province, what’s taken as meeting the provincial standard is “level 3”/70-79%, and unacceptable is level “R”/below 50% — so there are, confusingly, levels 1 & 2 that aren’t unacceptable but aren’t meeting the standard. #flipclass
I've done similar things with a 'student suggested option. If they feel strongly enough to convince me their way would show learning and meet objectives, I try to let them. #flipclasschat#flipclass
A3 - For my best classes I have made full unit "Menus" with levels of activities for Ss to choose. I teach them Blooms and select some "minimum" assignments they have to complete. We have convos about doing their work for understanding and picking what works. #flipclass
#flipclass A4 I used to demand that all students watch every video now I have moved two videos being supplementary provided students can demonstrate competence on a few learning examples prior to coming to class
Yes! I found that Bio was a lot more facts and memorization. Surprisingly I had to incorporate a lot more vocab instruction (which I also flipped) so they could access science texts and content. In ELA it was about flipping reading and skills then having discussions #FlipClass

#flipclass#flipclasschat A4: Could accelerating Ss have choices in what content they dive deeper? In earth science after mastering plate tectonics, choices on what earthquake or tsunami in which to further investigate seems like a possibility.
Thanks! Some do! Some are overwhelmed with choices. These students need me to help them select assignments. We have conferences and I highlight choices for them until they get their wings. #flipclass
A4 Providing clear objectives with a knowledge check lets Ss know what info they need to bring to class, so how they get it can be up to them. I provide videos and text sections, but there are so many other ways to prep. #flipclass
Thanks! Pulling the curtain back on learning and how it works is one of my "secrets" to making flipped class work. I tell my students our goal is to learn how to learn without a teacher. By the end of the semester they should be able to learn without needing me. #flipclass
It would be cool if there was an opportunity to share their learning with the class so others are exposed to the additional topics. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Heh heh..my degree is in chem and physics, and I think I make my bio colleagues irritated when I explain to them that b/c of how my brain works, bio is to me like the English of sciences due to the memorization & language (they tell me uni-level is different) #flipclass
#flipclass#flipclasschat My district has 9-week grading period. A checklist for each grading period seems reasonable. If Ss really enjoy the choices and autonomy, they might get a lot of it after mastery, kind of a genius hour-type thing.
I have used videos multiple times. Some of mine from 7 yrs ago are still being used. I try to make them short and topical now so they can be updated as needed. #flipclass
I usually reserve 0 for the students who, say, got 100% on the safety quiz but haven’t shown up for/turned in assessments since despite everyone’s efforts to help. I can’t let that 100% stand without some balance - the 0 is just a tool in the overall “prof. judgment” #flipclass
After I finish this 1st run through the course I'll have a better idea of easy/medium/hard, group vs individual, and how to chunk topics. #flipclass. Hope to have something to share this summer. Thanks!
YES! We tried a science specific "genius hour" for some students called "Science of..." They picked ANYTHING they liked, and I helped them brainstorm questions to research to figure out the science behind it. Some students would be ready for this sooner with choice #flipclass
Lot of priming the pump for those projects...Many kids need to be scaffolded in..Ever see Joy Kirr's Livebinder for GH/20% https://t.co/rbALBOV8eQ - Plenty of links and guidance for any bump along that road #FlipClass
I have been learning through mistakes how to do this better — don’t say things like “remember on Friday we...”! I’m surprised they haven’t commented on my changing hair and glasses heh :) #flipclass
Yes! Working on a "super spreadsheet" to let Ss move forward through everything at their own pace. It's a bit overwhelming and scary to try. Vision: list of objectives with different activities for each and way for students to "turn in" evidence when they feel ready. #flipclass
A5 I imagine students could grade each other. I used a rubric once and they helped each other look to make sure each part was added and nothing left out...before they handed it in. I think that was a fun exercise for them....helping each other get a good grade. #flipclass
I think this reinforces the relationship in the classroom. Ss see you are trying to better their learning experience and they want to support your success in helping them learn the best way! I love this culture you have created in your #FlipClass

Yes. But the Ss always tend to pick what they are familiar with - traditional test, mostly out of fear and I think indifference. Why would I take time to make something when the teacher already has it done? #flipclass#flipclasschat
#flipclass#flipclasschat A5: I never gave much thought to widespread assessment choices. Have done the occasional choice of picking 2 of 3 essay answers, but not much past that. I'll be interested to see what the rest of #flipclass says.
#flipclass A5 I have been utilizing more unit capstone activities and offering choice in how students present their understanding....i still get slot of Google slides or problem demos that are not exceedingly creative but some Ss excel.
#flipclass A5 even on paper tests in math I allow S created-then-solve examples that must meet a variety of criteria and most have taken this well...except the "just tell me how" crew. S have to make choices about what is a "good" example
Project based/performance classes have some great options and choice fits in easily. I tried offering prove it your way (with student rubric) or take my test. Most just chose the test. #flipclass
I keep working towards having a firm list of learning goals for each unit & course and basing individual vids and as‘mts on each goal. Honestly with my clingy toddler I’m just doing what I can in the #flipclass world right now but I can keep improving, right?
