In all honesty tonight’s questions are a little outside the normal realm but it can be a very serious issue among coaches, especially OL coaches. #hogfbchat
A1. It’s something that hasn’t always been a priority but it is becoming a bigger one for me. Body is basically making it become a big thing. #Hogfbchat
A1: not nearly as important as it should be obviously haha. I definitely am working on that, but as for my players, for the most part that hasn’t been too much of an issue, our strength coach holds our guys to a high standard on what they eat and drink #Hogfbchat
A1: Extremely. It contributes to healthy well being and getting yourself in the right state of mind. I for one struggle with this sometimes. #hogfbchat
A1: On the weekends... Oof. But I try to workout as much as I can during the week. Sometimes it's demonstrating for my players or just riding the bike as I supervise lifting (although I often have to get off to ensure safety and making sure they're on task) #hogfbchat
A1: VERY. I think in this generation and era it’s important for us to be able to lead by example as much as possible. Never know when these guys are watching and looking #hogfbchat
A1 cont. also as a father of one with another on the way I want to be my healthiest for my kids. Want to be there and be healthy for the team at home as well. #HogFbChat
A1: Extremely. I’ve lost 112 pounds and counting. I can’t properly teach my guys healthy living, effectively coach blocking techniques, or impart any knowledge or wisdom on guys when I’m sloppy, out of shape, and can’t do the basics I’m trying to teach. #HogFBChat
Q1: A healthy lifestyle is truly important especially after playing OL in college. Lost almost 80lbs because I knew I had to get that weight off. Plus being an energy guy you must be able to move. #hogfbchat
A1) Huge! I had a bulging disc and it ruined my life & ability to coach for a year. I think it happened in part b/c I wasn’t taking care of myself. I have a soon to be 7 yr old son who I want to see grow up. He loves sports & he wants me to play with him (for now). #hogfbchat
A1: Not been a top priority. This off season I started cross fit and I love it. brought some workouts to our team weights, the guys like them as well! Figure if I’m going to preach my guys to be healthy I need to lead by example! Lose 20lbs by season start #Hogfbchat#goals
A1 I spend the entire off season getting into shape for the season... just like the kids do. To say I take care of my body during the season would be a lie. But I do a pretty good job during the off season #hogfbchat
A1: It’s important when I sit down and think about it since I have my first kid on the way. I want to be a good example for her. My eating habits and behaviors don’t always reflect my intentions, though. It’s a continuous struggle that won’t ever come easy #hogfbchat
A1. Very important, coaching is physically and mentally demanding, not taking care of yourself will lesson your abilities in the two areas above. Plus, practice what you preach.
Q1. How important is a healthy lifestyle to you? #hogfbchat
Q1: I try to be as healthy as I can be lol. I try to practice what I preach! Eat well and workout. Sometimes I fall short but I attempt to do my best. It honestly helps to stay in shape during season. Need to be right and ready to go everyday! #Hogfbchat
A1: if we are talking the kids, Top 3 most important things
If we are talking us, in theory it is important but in practice my health is last on the list. Shaving years off my life to do this job
#hogfbchat
A1: Speaking as a young coach, it's important to get sleep, have the energy to set the tone when taking the practice field. Players see more than you think - and if they follow your lead, showing through participating @ weight sessions & not eating like a slob is huge #hogfbchat
A1: Within the past year I have learned that it is important. Been getting more sleep. Recharging the batteries and eating better. Doctor gave me a clean bill of health. I lost about 50 lbs. I think environment helps. Got a new job. #hogfbchat
A1: It's getting more important as I get older. In the (excruciating) process of quitting the dip, doing much better with the food, working out harder. Really just trying to look better for the fall and ya know, not die sooner than I have to.
#hogfbchat
A1: I know we may jokes about our kids eating and being happy, but I place a significant amount of importance on health for myself and the guys. We have to model appropriate lifestyles for these guys because some of them may have no one else to look to for guidance
#hogfbchat
A1: One thing i struggles with was not giving my brain a rest. Your brain needs time to rest. Finding activities outside of the football field is very critical #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A1: more and more everyday. *typed this while eating salad*
1. Eat something that had eyes at every meal
2. Eat colors, more the better.
3. Notice how you feel after things. A lot of things will affect you more as you age.
#FightTheDadBod
A1 - enough so that I spend the whole off season trying to work out and eat healthy to make up for not doing either during the season. Goal for next year is start going to the gym in the mornings during season #hogfbchat
A1 cont: mental, emotional and spiritual health are the most important, though. Having a strong network of people around you goes a VERY long way towards having a healthy lifestyle as a coach #hogfbchat
A1) I believe it is paramount for coaches to have a healthy lifestyle. We need to be in shape so that we can maintain that high energy level through practice and a season. And before any smart A's that coach with me say anything yes I need to work on it #hogfbchat
A1: A healthy lifestyle is truly important especially after playing OL in college. Lost almost 80lbs because I knew I had to get that weight off. Plus being an energy guy you must be able to move. #hogfbchat#hogfbchat
Q1. How important is a healthy lifestyle to you? A1: very important try to end workouts with a "put good stuff in your body speech and have milk and pb&j on hand after workouts!#hogfbchat
A1: Extremely important!! As a coach I believe you need to be an example for your student-athletes. Even if that means it’s take your kids to your workout day #hogfbchat
A1: I try very hard to show the guys it’s important. Just like everyone, it’s harder as you get older. I lift with them as well. I really enjoy lifting still, and competing a little is enjoyable too! #hogfbchat
A1: it is becoming more of a thing. For years I ate like a 16 year old and through my 40's no real consequences. As I reached 50 things changed. I ballooned up over 350 and was an insulin injecting type 2 diabetic. I had gastric bypass surgery, lost 130 pounds #hogfbchat
My diabetes is cured and I now take zero medications.
Since I have bilateral arthritic knees and a torn rotator cuff exercise other than walking is difficult. I eat what I want just MUCH less. #hogfbchat
A1 Cont: here’s the problem with this question though; Everyone is going to have the same answer. “Of course health matters!” Meanwhile, far too many coaches run to a Big Gulp of Mountain Dew or hit up McDonalds for a pre-dinner snack on the way home. Walk the walk. #HogFBChat
A1 much more important now than it was previously. Struggled after college to keep my weight down, lost almost 50 lbs about a year and a half ago. Still tough to keep a healthy lifestyle, esp in the offseason. #hogfbchat
A1: Very. A cheat day once a week is necessary & you have to enjoy yourself, but working out & eating healthy are important. Tougher in season or for me now in off season when I'm training players.
#hogfbchat
A1: honestly, not as much as it probably should. But in my mid-40s now, w/ 3 teen girls & youngest w/ quadriplegic cerebral-palsy, I've had to make some changes to keep my self in better form for long-haul. More intentional about my diet, esp. breakfast, & about sleep #hogfbchat
A1. Pretty important. As a PE teacher I like to at least look the part. Try and work out several times a week if schedule allows. Also have the metabolism of a 5 year old ADHD so... #hogfbchat
A1 I think it’s important and can help improve performance and energy during the season. Been trying to lose weight and work out more since the season is over. Also helps that @Coach__Adams implements a soda ban during the season #HOGFBCHAT
A1: I feel though it is very difficult during the season with two young boys at home to fit in a good workout. That’s why I chose cross fit. Workouts are only 10-20mins long and very intense #Hogfbchat
A1) kids today are different. With all of the technology they can “see” an explanation for anything. They learn a lot more by seeing(via google, YouTube, etc).As coaches, we need to be the demonstration to what we preach to earn that trust #hogfbchat
... especially if it's not 300lbs the right way. I emphasize to my boys that we gotta eat right and maintain our exercise plan. No matter what, you want to have a life after football, and it's more fun if you can be active while you're living it #hogfbchat
A1: very important! I can’t tell my guys to take care of their bodies if I don’t do the same! I have to lead by example in all aspects of the game/life #hogfbchat
A1: it’s important , but to live by it sometimes it’s difficult...field house until midnight 3 days a week, 4 hours of sleep most nights. But always strive to do the right thing. #HogFbChat
A1: Being fresh outta college I’m taking being healthy as serious as possible I workout 5-6 days a week and have been working on developing better eating habits as I’m no longer needing the 6,000 calories to maintain my college weight of 310 #hogfbchat
A1: Shawnee HS has a biggest loser weight loss challenge going right now. I have 3 colleagues that are ladies and I as a team. We help each other. We have lost weight together! Dingus’ Angels! #hogfbchat
A1 count: A lot of the time we spend putting weight on our lineman but we really need programs to help them get that weight off when they are done playing #hogfbchat
A1: Surprisingly I lose weight in season and gain out of season. Used to lift with players. Always found it easier to have messages/lessons for the team when you are with them in the trenches. #hogfbchat
I struggle to workout w/ kids b/c of desire/need to supervise training. But I like this idea of even just getting on bike during workout #simplesmallstuff#hogfbchat
A1) as important as it is, it isn’t always easy. With 2 kids under 3 and my wife doing her Master’s, it doesn’t leave much time to workout like I would want to. Eating healthy can be tough also when we only get an hour or so from getting home to bath time. #hogfbchat
A1: I think it is crucial. Hard to talk the talk of you don’t walk the walk. I try to remember my mindset as a player and I didn’t take people real serious when their actions didn’t match their talk #hogfbchat
I've fought nicotine addiction all my life. Started dipping snuff when I was 8 and smoking in college. Have been off and on for all those years. Off both for 4 years now.
#hogfbchat
A1) Very! Especially during the season when stress is running high - always try to get some sort of lift and treadmill work in. Always try to multi task and watch film on the incline!
#hogfbchat
A1-I knew healthy was going in the diet/workout/eat n drink route, which I agree is important to model, but how about lifestyle BALANCE. Model being a good husband, father, co-worker. Have other interest. Be passionate about other things. Can’t all be pancakes and TDs! #hogfbchat
A1) important and can noticeably tell a difference when I eat right and get a workout in but once you fall off the wagon it’s harder to start back up. Always strength in numbers though #hogfbchat
As for me personally try to stay on track difficult when the team meals are Whataburger at 11:00 pm. Not trying to lift kids or out spring them to old for that and no eligibility left push to get on track this spring and summer Got to try and get the beach body ready #hogfbchat
Couldn’t agree more. I really struggled with this my second and third year. Lived and died with happened at practice. If coach got on to me ruined the rest of the day and I would just shut down #Hogfbchat
Extremely. As a PE teacher and football coach, I think it's important to practice what I preach as long as I am able bodied. Most importantly though, it is important that I am the best version of me for my own children.#hogfbchat
A1: Very important. Yearly physicals, screenings, and regular exercise. Best move I ever made was to quit drinking over 3 years ago. Feel better, less angry and irritated, and can accomplish more with a clear head and mind. Game Changer for me and mine. #hogfbchat
A1: Shawnee HS has a biggest loser weight loss challenge going right now. I have 3 colleagues that are ladies and I as a team. We help each other. We have lost weight together! Dingus’ Angels! #hogfbchat
A1: Pretty important right now. 2 kids with the flu both had flu shots. I didn’t get one but haven’t got the flu... yet. I smell conspiracy! #HogFbChat
A2: Already started trimming down and eating better. Lost a couple inches on the belly and excited to keep getting in shape for @JerodBrown_ wedding!
#hogfbchat
A2 try not to eat quite as badly inseason. I feel I do a good job compartmentalizing and not taking football home with me and mantining a social life but my in season diet would kill me if I did it year round #hogfbchat
A1: isn’t just limited to weight loss either. Really important to set aside a day a week to recharge and clear your head. This is overlooked so often by people in our profession, especially at the HS level. The “grind” #hogfbchat
A2. I am hitting the gym 3-4 days a week on the elliptical and doing some bodyweight work. Trying to eat healthier as well. Less fried food and empty carbs.
#Hogfbchat
A2: I know personally this last season was the worst I’ve had in regards to stress and anxiety, gave myself the worst case of heartburn I’ve ever had. I need to do a better job of handling that anxiety and not getting stressed about little things #hogfbchat
A2: Having someone or someone’s to be a bit more accountable to. I was working out twice a day when I was in college.
I had lost over 100 lbs at one point.
Like a lot of guys say... workin four with the kid sis a good idea, but rarely works out. #hogfbchat
Q2: Need to eat better!! I usually can find time to workout, even if it is a home workout, but I lack the disipline at times to make the right choice when it comes to food. Need to train myslef to be better! Always room to improve. #Hogfbchat
A1)
It’s important.
Found it tough to stay motivated since I stopped playing.
Picking goals that actually motivate me have been a challenge. #hogfbchat
A1. So important. I don’t need to be able to base block a war daddy from Jenks anymore, but I do need to be able to play with my future kids one day. Currently down 25 lbs since I started eating cleaner and sleeping better, in January #HogFBChat
A2: Haven't drank for 40 days, and while a small sample size, has done wonders for focus, energy, overall health, and day-to-day relationships #hogfbchat
A2: I just took 2 weeks off after 3 years of no vacation or time off. I need to MAKE time for self-care. I need to work on being more present as well. For me it's mostly mental stuff. My head space is important. #hogfbchat
A2: Personally I would like to drop some weight. Been working on that currently, I aggravated a bulged disc in October and got on the scale at the doc & seen how bad I had gotten. Hadn’t had a soft drink since that day and haven’t had sweet tea since New Years. #hogfbchat
Mike Zerr, OC/TE, Brandon Valley, SD Late to the party due to meal prepping for the week. Quick glance at the theme tonight quite the coincidence #hogfbchat
A1)It may not look like I do things to be healthy. But if you saw me a few years ago, you'd get it. I think hitting 40, made it more important. I was 383lbs at my heaviest. #hogfbchat
A2) consistency through the season! I have found it to easy to let nutrition slip during the season with work, practice, meetings and other things but those are all excuses and that’s when meal prepping is huge! #noexcuses#Hogfbchat
A2: For me personally, just trying to be more active on a regular basis and sticking to it. During season is always tough to find the time to exercise and eat right, then that always makes it hard to get back going again #hogfbchat
A2: was 290 last January. Was 225 during season this year. Had a mantra to be 200 before 40. Back up a bit since season ended, but need to get back into walking and getting sleep. Drink a lot of water during the day. Try for 150 oz. #LotsOfBreaks#hogfbchat
A2: Stay on the path I’m on. It’s not hard, we just talk ourselves out of it cause we’re too damn comfortable with the status quo. Meanwhile our waist gets bigger, our breath gets shorter, and we get more complacent. Make a change. #HogFBChat
A2. Been working to clean up the diet. Would like to get more sleep to. I have made significant improvements in both areas but could still be better. #HogFbChat
A2: Lose more weight I am still not done. My anxiety and heartburn is under control. I believe environment was a huge factor in that. Oh also a gallbladder surgery helped. #hogfbchat
A2: Get in routine for working out. Have done pretty good job of changing eating habits. Down almost 40 from end of last season. Need to get in workout routine to keep that progress. #hogfbchat
A2: Meal prepping and planning out portions, starting a workout routine in the morning. My patience improves. My mood improves. It helps everything when I am moving and healthy. #hogfbchat
Q2: What changes would you like to make to your own health and well being? A2: Eat better, get more steps in and not stress as much about things out of my conttol. Spend as much Quality Time with Family #hogfbchat
A2: Eating habits. I had a spinal fusion 8 months ago and am doing great, but won’t ever be able to work out much beyond walking. Working out always helped my mindset towards eating healthy, so this is a new challenge I have to figure out #hogfbchat
A2: As I’m about to end my senior year of college, I wish I would have relaxed a lot more. I could count on one hand how many times I went out to have a good time. I wish I could have gone back relaxed and just took in everything #hogfbchat
A2: I might have answered this already but kick the dip, and lose a bunch of weight. Saw some pictures of myself this fall and was disgusted. Really hurt the swagger.
#hogfbchat
A2) For me it’s eating right and avoid snacking. I love my snacks! I was a runner before my back injury. Want/need to get back into that more- even if it’s not long runs. #hogfbchat
A2: lots of things come to mind, but the biggest are drinking water, and getting more sleep. Exercising is a given, but as a teacher/coach, you get comfortable with your soda/energy drink every day. Helps with the grind, but your body hates it. #hogfbchat
A2: Eating! Cooking out every weekend probably isn’t good for the cholesterol...just need to keep off the 20 pounds I lose every year in season. #HogFbChat
A2 time set aside for workouts...rehabing an ACL complicates things for me! So does slipping on the ice and pulling my hammy! Im probably lucky it isnt worse! #HogFbChat
A2: I’ve got to do a better job of fitting in workouts/cardio. Tough to do with a one year old, but I know everyone here has challenges as well. #hogfbchat
A2. See alot ot responses coming in and a few mention it but mental health is more important than physical. Bet a ton of physical problems can be traced back to stress, anxiety, worrying etc that all coaches go through. #hogfbchat
A2: I do some powerlifting and strongman in the offseason so I tend to put on weight, but I am trying intermittent fasting and see how it goes #hogfbchat
A2: getting a set fitness regiment, being more motivated. For whatever reason school days seem more tiring when I’m not in season, have to dig deep to be active in the winter/spring. #hogfbchat
Yo, this. When I changed my diet and cut out shitty foods, my entire mindset, demeanor, and personality changed for the better. I can. It stress this enough. #HogFBChat
A2: Got to start working on cardio, more water and a fruit or veggie with every meal (does celery with my wings count?) continue to sharpen the mind by reading every night #hogfbchat
A2) healthier eating. Always been an over eater and have lost the weight before but just have to get back in that mindset again. With girl #3 on the way im@uo for the challenge and ready to get going. #hogfbchat
A2 cut down on the junk food during the season. Find time to lift weights on my own. Really limited on what I can do because of my back, so free weights aren’t really an option for me #HOGFBCHAT
A2: Starting intermittent fasting. Eat from 11AM to 7 PM and that’s it. Try to keep calories around 1800. Night time eating has been a problem all my life. #Hogfbchat
Increase workout volume, reduce sugar in my diet, and lose 10 more pounds (health). Read, meditate/pray more (well being).
Q2: What changes would you like to make to your own health and well being? #hogfbchat
A2: Tough question, but a great one. Just keeping balance with a young family, working, and coaching. Always a challenge, but fortunate to do what I do and have a great and supportive family.
#Hogfbchat
A2. Less time on my phone. Turning it on greyscale was a nice surprise to help that. Take 3 big slow breaths before I get mad at a kid/parent/anything. Do More mobility drills. #hogfbchat
A2: I need to do a better job of managing my time to put me first. I have great intentions to workout and then I get caught up w/ things that pop up for the HC role. #Hogfbchat
A2. Need too walk more. Changed diet and quit tobacco. I'm certainly not gonna start eating more veggies. I think living closer to school has helped me a lot. Not as much temptation to stop and eat. #hogfbchat
Y’all hitting me with a heat round right in the chest.... got to get healthier. I was down to 185 while in the Army, got out got lazy... wife had a kid and can’t find the time.. got to get better, I ask it if my kids time to walk the walk.. #Hogfbchat
A2: I would like to say drink less caffeine, but I don’t see that actually happening. I recently learned of espresso and It’s really cranked up my caffeine intake! #HogFbChat
A2. Something else that needs said for coaches everywhere, its not the quantity of time you put in it's the quality. Quit "grinding" just to "grind" cause everyone else does it. It's just a game you dont need 16 hour staff meetings etc #hogfbchat
A1: core part of who i am. I get up early every single morning and go to the gym before school. I get in some extra sets with my weight lifting classes. I play basketball every day with my team sports class. I meal prep all of my meals for the work week sundays #hogfbchat

Playoff basketball tonight, so I’ll be following along! Have fun, fellas!
https://t.co/FBft26ziji
A2: I'm a snackers, so not eating after 8p is usually the discipline that turns me around. When I drink more water, I discover thirst that I've called hunger. And then I need a lifting routine, since my youngest daughter requires me to do a lot of lifting & carrying #hogfbchat
A1: sadly it’s something that I took for granted for a very long time. As I have gotten older I have realized how important it is to maintain health and take care of yourself. I’ve lost around 40 pounds in the two years but still have a long way to go! #HogFBChat
A3: I believe so, I try my best to have a positive impact. A lot of these kids need that because some don’t get many positives in their lives. #hogfbchat
A3 - we encourage the crap out of playing multiple sports and S&C when not playing a sport. Hard to say how much of that they take with them after high school though, I’d say a mixed bag for sure #hogfbchat
A3: Yes, we constantly preach lifting and healthy diet. Plus we always try to get some workouts in with them when we can, especially during the summer time. ABS BABY! #hogfbchat
A3-I feel like I do. I stress eating right and taking care of their bodies to prepare them. Our weekly visits to one of our fallen brothers graves during the season also helps keep things in perspective. #hogfbchat
A3: I try to be a good example for them and talk to them about my own weight loss journey (lost 90 lbs 9 years ago). I have seen many of our big guys lean out a lot and improve their overall health #hogfbchat
A3: I sure hope so. Want them to feel good about themselves when they walk away from school, practice. Not always perfect, struggles are part of the growing process, but when they’re done hopefully feel positive about their interactions with me as I do with them. #hogfbchat
A3) after my first child I lost over 150 and all my kids saw it and believed in everything I said after that and knew I was telling the truth bc they saw it. Gained most of it back but still try to push them towards healthy habits and work ethic #hogfbchat
Hahaha. No neighborhood dog, but their is a coyote family that we have to stay on the lookout for. Not looking to let my dog get mixed up in anything there. #Hogfbchat
A3: Feel like I give them the tools to keep it rolling when they are done. Also try to make myself availablewhen they have questions no matter how old they get. We encourage guys to come back and get workouts in with us #hogfbchat
A3. Yes overall we are a pretty lean team, we talk nutrition and rest and training. I think the area that is hardest to have an effect on is sleep. My guys between whatever game is popular or homework do not sleep enough.
#Hogfbchat
A3) If you aren't having a positive impact on and off the field then you are in the wrong business. Winning games is great but life off the field means so much more to our program. I want these kids to be successful when they leave so life is much easier. #hogfbchat
A3: I’d like to think that. A lot of the kids that I’ve coached or trained still utilize the stuff I taught them. Many of them gave up the barbell and only use it for deadlift, squat, and a few other lower body lifts. #hogfbchat
A3: I hope so. I have some guys every year I talk to about not getting too big. It's easier to make changes and lose weight when your younger. I show them my before and after pics.
#hogfbchat
A3) I try my best everyday to treat all the players I coach the same. Some need more things than others and I try my best to do everything I can for my players... I hope they see it as positive. #hogfbchat
A3: This is a tough one. I’d like to think I am, but it’s probably not as big as I think.
I think the closer we get to the season the Better the kids eat and train, but prior to that... the guys that are taking it serious, are serious. The rest.... do what they do. #hogfbchat
Cont: I know they may not have any idea how much they impact all of us as coaches so positively in our lives. Thankful for all of the students and athletes I get to be around and work with! #hogfbchat
A3: Being a Coach is so much more than the W/L record. We all strive to leave lasting impacts on the student-athletes we see on a daily basis. Coaching is who we are. Seeing your athletes develop/mature into elite young adults is what it’s all about. #hogfbchat
A3: Yes. Got these from some of my players at the end of the season. I try to show my players what love is. I always tell my players that if I only taught them football, then I failed #hogfbchat
A3: I feel like I have a positive impact on my players but it’s hard to tell unless you ask them. Best thing I have done since being coach is getting an FCA Chaplain on our team and he holds team Bible studies in local churches for our guys. Have had 30 or more guys go #Hogfbchat
A3: it is easier to hold them accountable when they know that hey can hold you a bit accountable. Also t easier to surround yourself with people who are on the same missions #HOGFBCHAT
Q3. Do you feel like you have a positive impact on the lifestyle of your players on and off the field? A3: I hope so, if we are not trying making better men to be good fathers, husbands, and citizens then what are we doing. Love seeing kids do well on and off the field #hogfbchat
Q3: I think I do! My kids are good kids. Dont get in trouble and know that they can come to me for anything! I build good relationships with them and make it a family atmospehere #Hogfbchat
A3. I think so. I have run the lifting program at my last two schools and Inhave seen the kids who put the work in and drink and after and eat right change a great deal. #HogFbChat
A3: Man I’d like to think so. Try to teach them more than just football. Teach them how to be good at life. With kids today, it’s so important that they know how much you care about them as people, not just football players. #hogfbchat
A3: 90% of our conversations revolve around food. One of our guys works at an Italian beef place, have an ongoing open debate with another about which Starbucks holiday drink is the best, introduced the OLs to @Ricobenes breaded steak...sorry, what was the question? #hogfbchat
A3: being new to the district this year, it was very important to build relationships. This really happens off the field. I really love the relationships ive been building here! #hogfbchat
A3: I hope so. Think them see me lose weight and how I do things helps, however, going out to dinner each week and seeing them eat... but I always get the veggie quesadilla. Some players have called me out on it. #Healthyish#hogfbchat
A3 - I work with our guys in the weightroom so there is a direct impact, but also through conversations on guys weight and owning it as an olineman...Dont be the big man that can't do a pullup! #hogfbchat
Try to focus on only the things I can control. I sometimes tend to let outside noise make me want to break things. No free rent in my head for the BS. Oh, and bust more sleeves...#hogfbchat
A3: I hope so. I try to ask, w/o being annoying, how kids are doing/feeling/how classes are going/other sports, etc. I also try to reinforce proper nutrition and we even did a body fat % for my 5th period football players. Allowed them to set goals for the off-season. #Hogfbchat
Yes. It's a clear message in our program. Train hard and smart, Eat right, hydrate right, and sleep right. With the hope it stays with them throughout their lives.
Q3. Do you feel like you have a positive impact on the lifestyle of your players on and off the field? #hogfbchat
A3: I would say I do. Everyday I come to work with enthusiasm. I love what we do. We get to teach kids about life through a sport. I might still be outta shape. But I believe my influence will make better human beings and help them become productive members of society. #hogfbchat
A3 cont. With those changes in players comes more confidence. This usually leads to better grades and better play. That creates more opportunities for after high school. #HogFbChat
A3: lifestyle? No.
On their life? If I’m not having a positive impact on their life outside of and after football then I have wasted their time with me and I should retire. I care more about their lives than I do about their playing ability.
#hogfbchat
A3: I like to think we have a positive impact off the field. And I hope it’s not just physically, but emotionally, socially and spiritually. Every time you see that lightbulb go off for a student-athlete, when they finally get “IT”, it’s all worth it #hogfbchat
A3: I sure as hell hope so! I love me some football. I tell my players that I love them. I mean it. I hold them accountable & push them but these young adult need to know I care more about them than I want to win. I want to influence them to make positive choices. #hogfbchat
A3: yes definitely. We started doing linemen meals on Tuesday nights. We would gather at a coaches house and eat, fellowship and just get away from the daily grind of football. It's allowed for more open, honest relationships between coaches and players! #hogfbchat
A3) I hope so! I love em up, don’t ask them to do anything I wouldn’t, try to live an honest and healthy life. We don’t have any really overweight kids. #hogfbchat
A3: I also try to talk to all my guys about something other than football. Let them know I care about them outside of the game. We also use the word “Love” a lot. Tell them I love them like sons and would do anything for them! #Hogfbchat
A2: Started this year doing the keto diet along with my brother. Have lost somewhere around 25-30 lbs. I just want to keep it going. I feel 10x better and am getting back to being my old self. It’s the diet made for me. #hogfbchat
A3 cont. It’s all about the work the kids do though. We can give them every workout and tell them about the benefits of nutrition, but when they chose to do it great things happen. #HogFBChat
A3: the ones who show up for workouts and participate in track have shown a lot of improvement in terms of work ethic. It's translated to the classroom for some but definitely not all. Still everyone can see them getting better. Just gotta work on consistency #hogfbchat
A3)
I’d like to think so.
I try to set a good example, but I’m know I’m not perfect.
I don’t know if we as coaches will ever know the true impact we have on the players we coach.
#hogfbchat
A3: I focus a lot on my OL’s healthy lifestyle on the field. I work on relating to them and learning how they need to be taught/directed. I unfortunately don’t teach where I coach so I miss out a lot on the best part of the job, getting to know the guys on a deep level #hogfbchat
A3: kidding aside, really try to. Stress with them the importance of time management, carrying their work ethic over to all areas of life. All this to say nothing of our program’s core values, spend time with them setting goals and putting plans in place to meet them #hogfbchat
A3: Hearing from dozens of former players on my birthday yesterday and having some great conversations with guys like @Bfrankx9@s_akem18 and @CadeYeager13 about their lives now on and off the field is why you coach. Pay it forward. #hogfbchat
A3: I try to be the best influenceI can be. That being said I don’t work in the building so my contact with players during the off-season is very limited. In season we preach every day the importance of hydration of re-fueling their bodies. #hogfbchat
A1: awful example of this!! Need to be better for sure. Our head coach @CoachBHardin does a great job encouraging coaches to take care of themselves. #hogfbchat
A3: like everyone else, I hope so. Not a formal area I evaluate, like academic progress, family life, etc. But its natural conversation, especially w/ 3 & 4 year guys as we go thru off-season to in-season to off-season cycle more times, get to know them more. #hogfbchat
A3: I think this year is going to be the year of vaping. Coaches across the country are going to have to deal with the struggles of players and vaping. We can educate them about making good choices, but ultimately they will be responsible for their choices. #hogfbchat
A3)Yes! Along with the discipline on the field, we work with players off the field to make sure they’re having a significant impact in the community. Staying on top of their grades has also been big for the overall development
#hogfbchat
A3: So many of my players past and present have awful eating habits. My wife and I make a point to have them over or take 'em out for a good meal. We hope to make a positive impact way beyond eating habits. It's why we do it. #Hogfbchat
A3: There is a ton of bad out there in this world. If we teach discipline and character. I am all in! That’s how important our jobs are. I want each of my kids to be great fathers and husbands that they can be. We have an epidemic where men can’t handle it. #HogFBChat
Next season will be my first coaching football and teaching at the same place. Doing wrestling at my school right now and it makes such a huge difference being around during the day. I would hardly know my wrestlers if I didn’t teach at the same school #hogfbchat
A4: sometimes you have to just step away for an afternoon and not have to think about football. I’ll often end up at the gym or just reading a non-football related book to unwind #hogfbchat
Q4: Coaching can be mentaly exhausting!! For me, when I have time for myself I do things I enjoy outside of football. Relax and spend time with my fiance! #Hogfbchat
A4- this is probably my hardest thing to do. I feel like we have a great set up where Saturday is our hard work day, but once that’s over, we won’t meet again until Sunday night. That’s my time to decompress. But coaching Jr. High and Varsity is taxing for sure. #hogfbchat
A4: Read! I love reading leadership books and seeing how some of the greats do it. Leaders are learners, you can never know too much. Working out is also a staple and helps me feel at my best. #hogfbchat
A4: I make sure I get In Some play time with the kids. They are probably what keeps me grounded and centered during the season.
Other than that, reading and just quiet drives are what do it for me. #hogfbchat
A4: try really hard to eat as a family. Enjoy time with friends. Go to college games with family/friends on Saturdays. Go to church on Sundays. #hogfbchat
Q4: What sort of things/activities do you do to handle the mental health side of coaching? A4: gotta find time for throwing a hook in the water!! #hogfbchat
A4) Bought season tickets to OU games so my wife and I can just get away during the season. Saying you are going to do date nights always seem to change, season tickets don't. Love the time we spend and it my relief of the stress of coaching. #hogfbchat
A4: exercise can be helpful for mental health. a lot of positive thinking and high energy attitude help me to not sweat the small stuff. A great spouse is also helpful to always have someone to vent to when needed #hogfbchat
A4. This my greatest fault. I lean heavily on my family, but usually spend hours up watching film and not sleeping. It wasn’t this way when I was an assistant and a coordinator. #HogFbChat
A4. Podcast, listening to them is great. You hear different perspectives. I like the focus 3 ones for the self mental stuff. Run the power if I am thinking football related.
#Hogfbchat
A3: absolutely want to be a positive impact on kids. The whole purpose behind coaching is to positively impact young men. One thing I pride myself on is showing my players how to be a husband and father. Constantly want them to see me in those roles. #hogfbchat
A4. No. 1 is hanging with my two boys. They spend a lot of time at the field house, of course. Having them around has a grounding affect ok me. Helps keep things in perspective for me. And I love locker room rats! #hogfbchat
A4: As soon as 3 pm on Saturday hits I'm completely done with football (scouting-wise) and just try to relax with the family. I sometimes don't even watch college or NFL games just because I need a mental break. #Hogfbchat
A4: For coaches give them the weekend off, let them spend time with their families. For players, keep practices short and efficient, add fun things. Team cookout, movie...etc. get together and don’t talk football. Also always have open door answer any and all texts #Hogfbchat
A4) Not nearly enough. I love my guys too much and wants them to be better so mouse on the wheel is constantly running. On weekends though I try to give myself to my family so I can attempt to get a mental break. #hogfbchat
A4) In season the chaos keeps me happy. It’s the off-season is where I have to stay mentally stimulated, it why I work a part time job. This yearning gameday, I did things to calm myself all day or at least until 1 hr before kick.
#hogfbchat
A4: Find something outside the game to focus on! Date night, better BBQ techniques, watch WWE, playing my drums, or talking about something other than my job when I get home. But I’m always thinking football...even if it’s that 2 second flash #HogFbChat
A3: 100% We all struggle. It is important for our players to know we have things happen in our own lives and have the courage to have tough conversation or just listen to them. They need to know we care and that shows and teaches resolve and strength. #hogfbchat
A3: Coach em Hard. I mean chew them out if they need it. Hold them accountable. Have discipline but also after practice have a one on one with them and tell them that you love them. #hogfbchat
A4: Church! God is the best way for me to put things in perspective. Hanging out with my wife @CoachWife19 and daughter is a huge deal as well, they keep me grounded #hogfbchat
A4: God has blessed me with the ability to lay things at his feet and to seek out people that I can use to get things off my chest. My wife is a blessing in this area as well. Mental illness is a thing in my family tree so I have to make sure I take care of myself #hogfbchat
A4: It always helps to remember the priorities of life for me which is “Faith, Family, Coaching” sometimes I get way too tied up in that last one, focusing on the other two and keeping your priorities in line are a must & it’s something I need to do better at sometimes #Hogfbchat
A3: Hang out with friends, be a normal human being and set coaching aside for a little while. Focus on my wife and strengthening my walk with God. #hogfbchat
A4: I try to go to college games on Saturdays in the fall, seeing forget players play in college is something I really enjoy and it takes the pressure off. Aside from that I try to go out, see bands, at least one thing non football related on Sat or Sun after meetings #hogfbchat
A4) this season I ended up have a stress induced minor (no damage to the heart). Definitely a scare when it happened. After the season and even during, I forced myself away from football at times. On the weekends I went to the zoo with my boys instead of watching games #hogfbchat
A4: I’m the absolute worst about it, but I do try & make an effort to take my mind off things during the season. Reading & honestly a little video game action has helped me stay a little balanced when all my mind wants to do is think about the game or next practice #hogfbchat
First and foremost PRAY and read God’s Game Plan!! Without that I would be a hot mess. Also spending time with my kids, this allows me to take my mind of football for a while. #HogFbChat
A4: spending time with my wife and kids is my get away. Watching my two sons compete athletically is how I get mental health. To be able to hug them and tell them that I love watching them compete is what it’s all about. No matter the sport!! #hogfbchat
A4: Great question and like some guys have said, it’s something not talked about enough. It’s necessary to have some time away from football to unwind with my wife and my son on a daily basis. #hogfbchat
A3. One area that I believe I have is by talking with them about mental health and depression. Very few have had a conversation about that prior, even though about a third know someone close who suffers. Something all of us need to talk about more. #hogfbchat
A4: Work every day to get up early and have an hour or 90 minutes of time to myself. Faith, Music, Reading (some GREAT books lately), sometimes work or film too, but it’s calming and a great way to start the day. #hogfbchat
Occasionally I say out loud “it’s just high school football” - kind of a mantra when things get stressful. Saturday is family day. A couple non-football events with coaching staff and/or players help too. #hogfbchat
A4) Have a hobby/friends away from the game. Take a day or weekend away to get a change of scenery. Write down a list of the positive things you have going on and remember the great aspects of what you have going for you #hogfbchat
A4 cont. Family time and college football helps a lot on Saturday though. I am always thinking about something pertaining to my team though. #HogFBChat
A4: reading and spending time with family are my biggest two ways, but haven’t been reading enough lately. Also need to make sure to get enough sleep with often is a struggle! #HogFBChat
A4. Mentioned it before but time management is huge. So many guys makes excuses to work more than needed. Dont chase ghosts. Make sure you take care of you. #hogfbchat
A4: I read crime-novels in-season, just to keep the edge off. And walking the dog - or tug-o-war, or whatever - is a definite energy-bucket filler. And started a more disciplined literally in my closet prayer time in the morning before I get my girls up for school. #hogfbchat
A1. It wasn't a priority and my TEAM suffered because I wasn't in good health. I didn't realize how bad it had gotten. My #1 message to future/current head coaches: make time for health! These pics are 4 years apart: spring I was hired, spring I resigned. #hogfbchat
A4: semi-obsessive organization and intentional use of time. Willingness to ask for advice when you don’t know something even if it hits the pride #HogFBChat
A4- Lots of reading, garage woodworking.must be able to disconnect. Saturday from 8am- kids bedtime is family. I trade film and watch a little early, but 8am hits and I’m making breakfast for everyone. Kids to bed, time for wife and once she’s out, I’ll watch/grade #hogfbchat
A4: in the past, my wife and I would take short trips to the ocean or San Francisco on the weekend. Read. Go for short drives or overnight trips.
Listen to podcasts. Go to the shooting range. Watch college football.
Other then that, suffer in silence.
#hogfbchat
A4. First 'activity' is try to win more than lose! Winning cures all ills, mentally and physically. Other things include reading about other coaches in history.
Q4: What sort of things/activities do you do to handle the mental health side of coaching? #hogfbchat
A4)
When I lived in a city, I’d go for walks and listen to podcasts.
Helped to clear my mind, breathe etc.
Haven’t done it since I’ve moved to a farm. But since then, mostly spend time with my wife!
#hogfbchat
A4: Exercise, sing in the shower to some 80s tunes or Boyz II Men, laugh with family including fellow coaches, have fun with kids. Just be you. Remember why we played football in the first place. #HogFbChat
A4: I don’t have trouble too much there, I enjoy the grind and the intensity of it. I’m lucky to be on a staff that does a great job of keeping things in perspective. Great head coach and great assistants that enjoy being around one another. I’m lucky. #hogfbchat
A4: Going out for a post game meal with the wife, reading and listening to podcasts (mostly football related), Saturday’s are the hang out day with the wife, sometimes it’s shopping or out to eat, sometimes a movie, sometimes just relaxing at home #hogfbchat
A4: I try to get right spiritually. Either listening to podcasts or videos from my church along with attending mass. I will use meditation and actually did it with my offense before games towards the end of the season. I also play music or listen to music to unwind. #hogfbchat
A4 take some time with my wife and just relax. No football, no work. Just relaxing. We’ll also go see whatever Marvel movie is out as a good escape. Also golf #HOGFBCHAT
A4: I never did this. I was a grinder. Bad. Anxiety and high BP hit me. I had to find something to occupy my time. Cooking and reading has helped. #hogfbchat
A4: Gotta take care of ourselves and find the things we love doing. Obviously the Mrs. helps and I've become a big fan of reading as a k-8 teacher.
#hogfbchat
A2: I now MAKE time to sweat. 30 minutes, 6 days a week. I haven't changed my diet much, but it has made a huge difference. Doesn't matter if It jogging, weights, cardiovascular just sweat for 30 minutes! Do SOMEthing. Diet changes coming soon. #hogfbchat
A4: I freaking love being in the box for JV games on Thursdays. It's that "let's take a deep breath and enjoy watching the youngsters ball out" kind of thing. After, I'll watch some film with the wife for a couple minutes. Been doing that for years.
#Hogfbchat
A4: growing up I had some anger issues. Got into martial arts where i learned about meditation. That's how I usually start and end my day, especially during the season. Or just hit the bag. Good for thinking things through and finding solutions that you can't rush. #hogfbchat
A4: Coach year round so set a night each week to spend with the GF. Friends are great and loyal and understanding of how busy we all are - ready for a hang, chat, or a round of golf in the off-season. #hogfbchat
This is a great question - would love to hear answers from coaches outside of #hogfbchat as well
A4) I like to destress with something mindless like with TV or a book.
Great quote from @mlombardiNFL ‘s book about thinking of football as a game of chess - more focus less emotion

A4: I definitely need to go to church and read my devotionals. The next biggest thing is spending time with my wife. She levels me out. When my baby girl comes in a month, she’ll be my next biggest aide in what I turn to for my mental health #HogFbChat

A3: Positively influencing your players is MOST important. If we aren't teaching and modeling what it means to be good husbands, fathers, emoloyees, and citizens then WHAT are are we doing? Now I see healthy lifestyle as a part of that. #hogfbchat
Please remember to follow your fellow coaches for weekly chats and daily collaboration! Love being able to talk to coaches all over the world anytime it's needed! #hogfbchat
A4) Read, spend time with family or something to keep my mind off of football! Adding in workouts has been extremely beneficial to the mental health/sleeping.
#hogfbchat
A4 - I work for a great boss @MCBraunyBoy makes time for our staff to go to church and spend time with our families in season. Also making it home for dinner even if returning to the office is super important to me. Have to be a Dad before being a coach! #hogfbchat
A4 cont: I’m blessed with a head coach who is one of the greatest men of God I know and he truly understands the need to be with family. He wants us to put family first so anytime we need to sacrifice football for family, he lets us do that without question #HogFbChat
A4: love getting outside when the weather is good, enjoy the city and take a walk or bike ride. Spend time with the family, either make dinner or get a date night out. Our HC strongly believes in taking a full day off, which is great for us #hogfbchat
As always, if anybody has any questions or topics they would like discussed on a future chat, PLEASE do not hesitate to DM myself or @CoachDingus and we will get to them as soon as we can! #hogfbchat
Cooking! Gives me some good time to clear the head and listen to dumb podcasts in season. Wish I could find more time to read outside of summer though #hogfbchat
A4: My wife has forced me to learn to unplug. Obviously our work never stops but the Mrs. has forced me to take trips and do things I don't want to do ;) I am much better b/c of that. Balance is key. I try to golf occasionally and be around family and friends. #hogfbchat
Along the lines of tonight’s theme:
If any of you coaches are looking for some Keto recipes, I have a Keto Cookbook!
Dm for more details on how to get the over 70 Keto recipes! #HogFbChat
A4: I play guitar & golf. I read, and take short mini-vacations with just the wife. Football is probably harder on her than me. Coaching is important; as is teaching a championship mindset. But, there is more to life than ball. #hogfbchat
Don’t forget to follow other coaches participating in the chat! Great seeing all the responses, and would really like to see us take charge on getting healthy. #hogfbchat
I would like to apologize in advance for all of you that show up tomorrow for work and one of your colleagues is singing his lungs out. Sorry, not sorry. Not my fault. #HogFbChat

Thanks @CoachShiffman and @CoachDingus for shedding light on such an important topic for everybody, not just coaches. We need to focus on our off field health more than the on field health. We can’t have on field clarity without clarity off the field. #HogFbChat
A4: We do a lot in the off season. We grill out and have pool parties, play cornhole and ask a lot of questions about personal life on a one on one basis. We as coaches open up our homes and make ourselves available way beyond the field of play. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat is brought to you by @GameStrat the #1 choice for football coaches looking for a highly reliable and affordable sideline replay system.

A1 not gonna lie.... during football season I’m far more interested in helping my students and athletes than myself. I miss sleep... and don’t eat great always. But it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make if it gives us a better chance on fridays #HogFbChat
A4: for all my fellow coaches: if you use spit tobacco as a coping mechanism (as I did), PLEASE give @getGRINDS a chance! Flavors are great (Caramel for me) & they feel like the real thing. You can't quit unless you WANT to, but if you want to GRINDS are awesome. #hogfbchat
A1) Since my retirement it has become top priority. Everything shifted from what I needed to be to perform and now it’s what I need to be to be healthy for my family. Total shift. 310lbs to about 230lbs. #Hogfbchat
Sorry I missed tonight guys, was finishing up some info on possible opportunities to help our fellow OL guys grow if you are in driving range start making plans #hogfbchat
I have to spend time away from the game. A lot of prayer during the season. If we have a bye week, maybe I plan a little weekend fishing trip somewhere. Vacation’s during the dead period too 👍🏾. #hogfbchat
A2: There's always room for improvement.. I have done a pretty good job or maintaining cardio but I definitely need to start lifting again. I could definitely eat better as well.. #hogfbchat
A3: I like to think so.. As a staff we have a 30 push up cursing rule.. I also try to teach my guys life lessons during those "teachable moments." I care about the men they are becoming more than they players they are becoming.. #hogfbchat
A4: Exercising, music and definitely hunting... I also try to engage in reading for personal growth. That helps me with picking up new skills and looking at things from a different perspective. #hogfbchat
