Welcome to / State your name, location, and something that you want to accomplish this week.
-
Let’s take a look at current legislation. Be respectful, recognizing that we have different views and focus on learning from peers
-
Q1 The Nation is watching as Alaska faces our budget realities, take a look at this article and comment. https://t.co/QK8IEERZWP
-
Nathan, Juneau, finish some special ed paperwork
-
Tom McKenna, Juneau, re-activate some school improvement committees.
-
-
Tammy Morris, Juneau, I will turn in my current reports by Friday!
-
A1: This is why I have to submit an RTI plan for next year. How can we deliver the same services with less support
-
A1: I think what is missing from this article and discussion re: education as an economic engine in AK & additional losses
-
A2: Wouldn't an income tax bring in more than $200 mil? What is $3600mean? 3 billion 600k deficit? That's big!
-
it is big, I've heard 3.6b to 3.8b as # fiscal gap. It could get worse, oil could go down more.
-
A2: Good article. Interesting they included Nightmute - turnover in rural AK doesn't seem to be more this year - pretty common.
-
A2 cont: There are other reasons than budget for loss of staff in rural AK, as article mentioned later.
-
I am taking care of a sick child - will miss this week! Looking forward to next time
-
/ Tammy Van Wyhe, Copper River, finish script for promo video re: CRSD's variable-term schedule
-
A2 cont: Actually I was out in village last wk & thought abt fact I didn't hear 1 reference to legislation or even pres candidates
-
-
A2: Unfortunately, it's tough to see beyond that HUGE deficit. Where to begin when the problem is so huge? https://t.co/aT3pSHjj3v
-
-
Q2#akedchat It’s clear that we need to cut & find new revenue sources. What do you see when you look at this graph? https://t.co/wmKCma4DmM
-
Why do you think this is? Why not more talk in about legislative happenings? https://t.co/fJaNB3bWNJ
-
-
A2 cont: Actually I was out in village last wk & thought abt fact I didn't hear 1 reference to legislation or even pres candidates
-
A2: So discouraging! How do we focus on the positive?
-
A3: This bill is continually evolving, I'm concerned that sec 2 wouldn't allow me to survey the favorite color of students
-
A2. Seems this is not a prob we can "cut" our way out of. New revenue is essential, even if inadequate immediately.
-
Q4 HB 298 https://t.co/dY4mkNQbhJ Districts having greater control over personnel allows for more local control? Ramifications?
-
A4: Listened to testimony on HB298 today. Not popular w/ many, but I strongly support. Small districts need the flexibility.
-
A4. I wonder what the "robust protections" for teachers look like in the bill.
-
-
-
To RIF when necessary to keep the Ts we need in classrooms for Ss. that is VERY real.
-
But how does the current law keep you from RIFing when necessary?
-
A4: So right now districts cannot lay off tenured Ts even if they don't have the money for them?
-
Q5 SB 79 https://t.co/Xvby1htOPd How will this affect you in your community? Do you have a pool of retired teachers to access?
-
Tenured Ts must be retained even when no job that requires their qualifications.
-
No, they can, if you look at AS 12.17.410
-
A5: We have a few retired tenured Ts in district, but they're happily retired and not looking to return FT https://t.co/DzxiiP8rNs

-
Q5 SB 79 https://t.co/Xvby1htOPd How will this affect you in your community? Do you have a pool of retired teachers to access?
-
I don't know that's the case, in Juneau if there isn't a job a tenured teacher is qualified for they get axed.
-
-
Not the case in my district. Sometimes reach beyond what's realistic to place Ts at expense of CR quality. https://t.co/Eolleaaxk0

Q6 As bad as the budget is, Alaska has huge resources and few people, how do we ready our students for the next iteration of Ak?
-
-
-
-
Q5: We "retired teachers" are typically looking for different wk than classroom teacher.
-
...and then talk to sch dist attorney. Easier said than done. At least from this part of AK.
-
more options for districts to pursue
-
A6: We live in an amazing state. Focus on future and prepare Ss to be resilient, realistic, resourceful. https://t.co/yVzSlspPVS

-
It's worth having a qualified person look at it v. altering RIF rules to allow the reduction of anyone.
-
Teach our students to be creative and collaborative problem solvers https://t.co/u2ES1ViolO

-
A6: No such thing as free lunch in AK anymore. We need to help Ss understand that creativity is key in solving problems.
-
I don't know it does, I think it allows someone to return to the classroom when they have 2nd thoughts
