The goal of #wvedchat is to provide educators an opportunity to connect, share, and learn from others by engaging in conversations around issues and topics in education.
A1: students are often told they are too young or inexperienced to have an effect. We can either join the chorus, or we can sing a different tune! #WVEdChat
A1: They are our reason for having work to do, so I would think we would want the most for them - empowering them takes them to the highest levels of achievement. #wvedchat
A1: As a T you may be the only person in a Ss life that believes in that Ss. Empowering them can only take their education to the next level. #WVEdChat
A1: Our students and own children are our future, I want to give them what I feel I may not have been offered in a public school setting. The future is now!
#WVEdChat#kidsdeserveit
A1 - Craig from Pa - our goal should be to inspire students to seek a passion for learning. This can’t happen when we are the sole providers of information. Adults develop their own passions from things they enjoy. It should be no different for students. #WVEdChat
#wvedchat A1 Empowered students reflect the world they enter post-school. The world our Ss enter requires skills that empowered Ss can acquire. The world isn't necessarily set up for compliant Ss to succeed.
A2: students will take ownership of their learning when a) we give them something to strive for and b) we teach them how to be self-guided learners. #WVEdChat
A2 - A tiered approach. Less focus on numbers and letter grades, more choice about their own interests, develop a culture of risk takers. Also, build relationships that stress a community of learning. #WVedchat
A2: Motivate students buy giving them something new, not the same old stuff #shakeuplearning. Use a common topic but give them choices within their learning and choice of tool for presenting it. #WVEdChat
A2: The key is making it relevant & interesting to their lives. We don't have to create students as experts, but rather expose them to help them to grow their interest in particular topics. #WVEdChat

A2 This is the magic of being a teacher, inspiring students! Make the material relevant to Ss goals and lives, get to know your students and what they care about #WVEdChat
#wvedchat A2 The industrial mechanism that education was driven by for over a century is irrelevant to our Ss. Use tech to provide on demand, anytime, anywhere lrng experiences. Eliminate the conveyor belt of lrng that prohibits so many of our Ss.
A2 - We also have to be willing to fail. I’ve done more PBL type lessons this year than ever. Many have been incredible, but some have floundered. Learn from the great ones and also from those that have failed. #WVEdChat

A2: Ask them what they want to know. Spark their curiosity, and we might be surprised at how they soar! Give them opportunities to work in ways that access their strengths. #wvedchat
Relevancy is an important construct in student empowerment!
Q3: Share a lesson where you have merged real-world application and content to provide relevancy to your students.
#WVEdChat
A3: I once had civics students create infomercials to sale one of the three branches of government like a product. They applied their knowledge of the content to educate others on it in a appealing format. #WVEdChat
A3: We are getting ready to launch #mysteryhangouts & #MysterySkypes. Our Ss will collaborate, analyze, & reason to determine locations of other schools while creating a class presentation to share about WV with other classrooms around the world. #WVEdChat
#wvedchat I think so many are resistant to to integrate tech in meaningful way b/c they're afraid of losing the human touch. Sitting passively and completing worksheets is actually very inhuman. But so is staring at a screen all day.

A3 - Just finished PBL on diseases. Students researched and developed ideas for learning about their disease. Some did games, interviews, games, and even a few podcasts from doctors. Amazing stuff. Did take a long time. Worth it though for those who wanted great! #WVEdChat
I think there is a fear of it not working too, or that the teachers themselves won't know what to do if they aren't comfortable with tech. It requires giving up some control. #wvedchat
#WVEdChat A3: Last week our 2nd grade Ss @MaryBAustin hosted a “Fairy Tale Market Day”. They read fairy tales, folk tales, & fables and created a business related to a FT of their choice in PBL groups. The adjusted prices based on supply/demand & learned about goods/services.
#WVEdChat A:3 Did a lesson with 5th science on Earth Systems. Related a water filtering experiment with the Rain Gardens we have at school. Before Ss didn't know what the purpose of the gardens were for and this helped bridge the gap. We had full engagement and they wanted more
I do a lot with #digicit Ss had created anti-cyber bullying videos. We have a school wide PBL How do we want WV to look when we grow up? Lots of terrific problem solving. #wvedchat
Yea, I see that barrier a lot too Nicole. #wvedchat The position of teaching has been seen as a position of control for sooo long. The industrial model.

It goes along with the idea of what are we preparing them for? Their future or our past? I’ll be speaking with Jaime Casap from Google about this soon for my podcast. #WVEdChat

A3: Lots of makerspace; in my self-contained SE class -lots of social emotional work also. We used tech & hands-on every chance we had to provide access for students who struggled with reading/writing, but always had a reading/writing component #wvedchat
A4: knowing students and their individual strengths is key, because you can use those strengths to differentiate, create opportunities to be successful, celebrate every chance you get! #wvedchat

A4: a way to build student confidence is to highlight their work. Had a super-shy student send me some music she made. I cranked it through the class surround sound. Didn't announce who made it, but she glowed. #WVEdChat
A4: I pay attention to the strengths of my kids and I play to them when I make assignments to ensure that I offer something for each of them or something that they can learn about #wvedchat
#wvedchat A4 Great Q. I can't answer w/o thinking of the inclusion class, the tough kids, those who carry weights that would break hearts. How do you build confidence & self esteem in those kids?!
A4: Been working with Ss coding and it's been a real transformation to see their self-esteem grow. Those who struggle in some areas flourished and were able to help others. It's been a real team effort. Talk about total engagement and a self-esteem booster. :) #WVEdChat
I can’t take credit for it. Our principal @hobartvera and 2 others are the brains behind the project. It covers economics, tourism, jobs and so much more. #WVedchat
#wvedchat A5 Voice breeds ownership, empowerment, autonomy. You can ensure they have it by asking them. Provide intentional opportunities for dialogue between u and the learner.
A5: it is important because the world they live in is changing; it’s not the same as it use to be; if I stand in front of my kids and just speak to them they tune me out but if they are involved they learn better or take pride in it #wvedchat

The awesome thing about educators that participate in #WVEdChat is that you're already doing all these innovative things! Now how do we convince others its valuable?
It's just so simple! I had to brag on a teacher in our school to everyone else today- she didn't do anything fancy. She just gave the kids a focus and the opportunity to talk when what she could have done was talk them to death, but instead she gave them the floor. #wvedchat
Always have to wrap it in love. If ya can't do that, don't even try. #wvedchat Model model model. Principals job to inspire and provide collaboration. Nurture a culture of humility & transparency.
A5 get on Twitter!, have more Edcamps, Tedtalks, EntreEd Conferences...I see the same educators on here from WV we need to push Twitter big time #WVEdChat
A5 Some key pieces are helping students understand that YES they have a voice then enabling & advocating for them to use it in an educated & informational way. How depends on each situation, classroom, and individual voice. #WVEdChat
I do it every now and then and I don’t mean to, I silence them when they have sat quietly for so long like through an assembly or a program. When they return to my room they need to eat snack and I tell them to eat not talk. #wvedchat

WV Teachers: Did you know that Ss who complete one 25 minute lesson of the online entrepreneurship discovery program, Venture, can earn a scholarship? Over $70,000 will be awarded! #WVedchathttps://t.co/fGY3hDsQOy
#wvedchat Edus silence student voice by not lrng. Exposure breeds growth. Edus have to engage n real authentic lrng opportunities themslves. Everyone wld say they encourage stdnt voice, but what do Ss say? Policies built on compliance do us little favors too.

A6: In my case it's in 2 schools, and I hope that both students AND staff feel safe, supported, and that they want to be there every day. We can make the learning happen if we have those first steps in place. #wvedchat
