Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.
Welcome to #musedchat! Tonight's chat is a GIF chat, we'll cover a bunch of different topics. Be sure to introduce yourself, and share a GIF that describes you #musiced
What works? Keeping track of where your students are regarding their use of singing voice, in-tune singing, lack of singing voice, and repertoire of tonal patterns. #musedchat#TONALLEARNING
A1. Feels like I have too much in my plate. Self imposed which is the main issue. Wish I didn't feel. I had to do everything in order to retain kids and promote (main reason) my programs.

#musedchat A1: Going really well. My Ss are getting the hang of solfege and getting good at critiquing their own success in rehearsal. A big step from last year.
#musedchat A1: It's not the roughest start to a year that I've had, but it's definitely had its ups and downs. Feeling more like "fluff" this year than ever.
Because of the national political instability, it's important to maintain the perspective that we're building futures for 20 years out. This year's been difficult psychologically for many. #musedchat#BETHANKFULWHENYOUCAN
A2: Today when I introduced Ariosoland to my kinders, I had almost everyone able to spontaneously create a melody to sing their name to! #Firststeps#Feierabend#musedchat
A1: Very busy, but now it feels like I have a moment to breathe. Really appreciating my friends and colleagues as well as the growth I can see around me. #musedchat

My tweets for the next hour will be dedicated to #musedchat Excited to have a District-Wide Music Showcase to celebrate back to back @NAMMFoundation Best Communities for Music Education this past week.
A2 We have started communication between lower elementary and music educators on reading and music and music and literacy focusing on Rhymes. #musedchat
#musedchat A2: Biggest success so far this year - year 4 in the same job! Planning finally feels more consistent and organized. More rapport with students.
#musedchat A2: I have met and talked to most of the teachers in our building this year. Because my program is mostly before school or during study periods, my interactions with colleagues are often limited to when we need something from each other!
#musedchat A3: I absolutely plan to get some R&R over Tgiving break! Will try to get as much done at school as possible so there's very little work to do at home. Family time, food, shopping, reading.
A3) I will definitely try to "carve" out some good RR time through family time, practice, exercise, listening to some vinyl, and reading. Our batteries as teachers definitely need to be full. You can't give what you don't have. #musedchat
A2: We are working on student-led rehearsals now. Always hard bringing heightened awareness about, but I’m so very encouraged by the conversations kids are having and progress made in leadership and team work! #musedchat
#musedchat A3 My weekend church gig is hosting Thanksgiving service, so no shortage of work for me next week. Planning to try to get away this weekend so I can shut my phone off and enjoy family a little bit before then!
I often ask students to give me the songs they want. Often, they pick ones that are not major or minor. Or are in 7/8 or 5/8. Or if they do pick Twinkle, I teach harmony. They pick content. I pick tonal/rhythm context expansion and harmonic understanding. #musedchat
A3: Fortunate that out district sponsors a “wellness weekend” where we all agree to no assignments, no grading, no homework, no work email. Looking forward to some self care! #musedchat
At the moment, we have been doing a lot of pre-cursor work. Discussing norms, goals, selecting a piece for each class to prepare independently for our winter concert. Lots more info on my blog: https://t.co/ctKDUXBLMS#musedchat
A4 I often wonder if we should work hard to keep them engaged or give them time to recharge as well. I believe it is important to give them time to recharge. #musedchat
A4 I think that sometimes getting away from practice can be helpful as long as there was continual diligence prior. If not, then practice is helpful to keep up over the holidays. Intent of the student matters. #musedchat
A4 #musedchat My kids have been obsessed with "Country Roads." I'm shamelessly bribing them with it. Good rehearsal days = singing some John Denver to close us out.
Engage him/her in music babble conversations, going into their world rather than bringing them into yours. So important to establish "silly" dialogue in EC music. :-) #musedchat#ECMusic
A4b But really, we just have a lot "to do" at all times and the kids are super fired up this year. It's not much extra work to keep them motivated, and I count my blessings! I know it won't always be that way! #musedchat
A4: our student-led work comes in handy for this. Students pay way more attention when they are I. The drivers seat versus the passenger seat. #musedchat
#musedchat A4: Lots of movement, seasonal activities that tie in content, quick pacing. I'll be drinking a lot of coffee and lowering my expectations. : )
A4 we have two performances pretty quickly after Thanksgiving, so we tend to stay in concert mode. We'll switch up seating arrangements, learn some easy Christmas carols, etc #musedchat
