#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
I remember that when I was a student in the class of a teacher who loved teaching, I loved learning. Those teachers shaped the teacher I am today. #hiphoped
Reality Pedagogy is rooted in a love for teaching and learning that makes teachers and students vested stakeholders in the health and success of the classroom #HipHopEd
An effective #hiphoped classroom is not unlike a dojo. There are varying degrees of experience & expertise all learning from & supporting each other. #cypher
As a teacher, its important that you love your students. It doesn't matter if they love you, though. Your emotional fulfillment or validation should not come from them. That's why its so important to do your own self-work. #hiphoped
Symbolic displays of love and affection. Garner financial and administrative support to build a school studio, ask youth to do it with you, tell them it’s their space to define #HipHopEd

So much of what passes for love is not actually love but trauma that we've internalized, survived but never healed from, and passed on. We have to be honest about all this if we're going to decolonize love. #hiphoped
Ooh yes! It feels like something similar to Participant Action Research, but maybe this is research-in-practice? Also Love-in-practice, Respect-in-practice...! #HipHopEd
A love for teaching and learning is embedded in the emotional connection to the process more so than the measurement or evaluation of the product #HipHopEd
Jumping into #HipHopEd for a sec tonight, but I’d like to acknowledge all of the teachers across the country on strike right now or have been on strike recently. We see you and we stand in #solidarity with you ✊🏽

Education rooted in love comes from the same principles of In Lak’ech. Indigenous pedagogy always triumphs, it is the pedagogy rooted in power and control that has got us to this point now. #HipHopEd#alwayslearning
So much of our love for our practice and our students can be communicated through actions like this. It’s a powerful way to show them we’re invested in their success. #HipHopEd
Symbolic displays of love and affection. Garner financial and administrative support to build a school studio, ask youth to do it with you, tell them it’s their space to define #HipHopEd
There is no teacher evaluation metric for the love a teacher brings to their craft. Yet it is something that all truly great teachers have in common. #hiphoped
I like the dojo analogy #ALot the #HipHopEd dojo must welcome sparring with a foundation of #Love that doesn't manifest in all happy experiences...A loving Dojo is often a tough Dojo because the ARTs & Growth take precedence
An effective #hiphoped classroom is not unlike a dojo. There are varying degrees of experience & expertise all learning from & supporting each other. #cypher
Yeah I’ve been writing about mixtapes as YPAR and counseling. But I think ultimately it’s just HH. All YPAR processes naturally occur in stuidos, while making mixtapes, etc. #HipHopEd
Until you learn to heal, trust, and love yourself, the only love you can give is ego-based, and that's more about you than it is about the person you are loving. #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/JqxWpjJoLg
When we talk about fostering a love of learning & teaching, it’d be interesting to examine the educational and educative schooling experiences of teachers. We can easily reproduce the good, the bad, & the ugly of this system just based on our own experience as a student #HipHopEd
When teachers show genuine love Ss feel the authenticity & learning is automatic...#trust#rapport so we must judicious in our messaging at all times. #hiphoped
This is a complicated issue to raise of where we get our validation and emotional fulfillment from. Teaching is so devalued in this country that we might all have some unhealthy emotional coping strategies. Or strikes for large groups of people. #hiphoped#alwayslearning
Victory Lap still serving gems. "Said he grew up in a house and it was love missing" salute @NipseyHussle
Remember you might be the only adult that's showing them they are loved & deserve to be loved.

You sound real good and you play the part well but the energy you givin off is so unfamiliar. I don't feel ya. WE need something realer #JayElectronica#Love#HipHopEd
No resting on your laurels. The best teachers model learning, so if you don’t learn with the kids you’re not really teaching. Masterful teacher vs master teacher rhetoric. #hiphoped#alwayslearning
Love is truthful and it establishes the relationship necessary for you to be truthful with your students and it invites your students to be truthful with you #HipHopEd
I couldn’t do what I do if I didn’t love interacting with the Ss, watching them think & listening to them come to conclusions after thinking deeply about what they’re learning. I couldn’t. This is too hard. This work is too important.
Love is the root of education.
#hiphoped
The most productive classroom I've ever taught was a classroom where every single student bought into the idea that we were a family. We all had each other's backs, and the work everyone did was so inspiring. Love is an immeasurably powerful force in education. #HipHopEd
As #HipHopEd we love the students and the teachers. We love Hip-Hop and believe that the culture embodies a love for teaching and learning that can be modeled in schools
There is so much misunderstanding, misconmmunication, angst, at play in all our Realities in America today that us #HipHopEd(ucators) need LOVE & ways to replensish IT in order to share it!
As educators we have to remember to show EACH OTHER love, too! Yes, love your craft and love your students, but shoot like my man LL Cool J said “I need love!” 😆 #HipHopEd
A real love for students should drive us to not only prepare them for the fight of life, but to fight along side them and in some instances for them #HipHopEd
Oftentimes, trauma is a major culprit in this. Students withhold trust because it has allowed them to survive their trauma. It is critical that we love them, and understand and accept that it may not be reciprocated. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd we all have to delve deep in our wells to draw forth the LOVE required to serve our youth! Mine comes from my FAITH in GOD...US, our People in all our manifestations #WeGoneBeAlright
I wanna know how we cultivate a love of learning & teaching at the schoolwide level? How do we dismantle the practices, policies, structures, etc. that are inherently oppressive, and anti Black and Brown youth #HipHopEd
Part of loving students is setting expectations and holding kids accountable to them. However with the generations of the school to prison pipeline as proof, the love must be authentic. Like #LisaDelpit’s other people’s children. How do you find balance in these systems #hiphoped
What's the complication? Teachers & students don't share equal power or privilege on multiple levels. Work that unhealthy stuff out with peers, supervisors, therapists. Ss are not there to do emotional labor for teachers, regardless of how teaching is treated in the US. #HipHopEd
“Tough love” in schools is a horrifying parallel to “tough on crime” sentencing. Both aim for revenge and retribution, rather than offering an opportunity for reflection and redemption. #HipHopEd
I had a conversation w/a teacher at a wknd function. I talked about children & certain circumstances...this teacher QUICKLY requested we NOT talk about children. informing me she was NOT @ work & didnt wanna talk or think about kids on wknds.
SHE SHOULDNT BE A TEACHER! #HipHopEd
I’m really hoping @chrisemdin and other champions of #hiphoped can make it out to @GC_CUNY this Thursday for a cypher I’ll be co-leading on Hiphop Pedagogy alongside my @FuturesED colleagues. We are going to putting our most vulnerable selves into the mix. https://t.co/OHYwwsehvp
Call for Proposals for 2019 Hip Hop Youth Research & Activism conference @RutgersGSE on 6/6/19. This year’s conference theme is “Art & Activism.” Seeking workshops, discussions & presentations that explore use of art, media, technology & imagery in fostering social change.
Mos Def - There Is A Way https://t.co/cNTfqMEvOQ via @YouTube#HipHopEd Don't Give Up Don't Give In when Love is why you do what you do and it's how you do what you do
No one is saying kids need to give emotional support to teachers or that it is right or justified. Teaching is an emotional profession, as seen by the current Denver teachers strike, and needs to be supported more than it currently ends #hiphoped
Facts. Students know motivations behind what we do. They respect and crave high expectations because it reflects our love for them. When schools discipline students, there’s usually little conscious thought behind the discipline. It’s heartless, objectifying, and cruel #HipHopEd
Love of learning means you are open to learning no matter what space you step into. Learning can happen anywhere and from anyone. As educators, we must model a love for learning. #HipHopEd
Our young people are too often the targets of hate & disdain including from their elders...and even us afer time our in the system....#HipHopEd Love is #Universal and #Unconditional#HipHopEd pedogogy is based on this...& we strive to reach the most Hated with this medicine
Here’s some inspiration and a potential resource for all my #hiphoped folks out there! This song and music video gives me chills in all the right ways every time I hear/see it. Thank you, @KatoriWalker. 🙏🏾 #RIPOrmonihttps://t.co/Bv3Mrqv7OD
An essential precursor to Love is the ‘like’. Hip Hop Educators should actually be people who LIKE children as people and possess a repertoire of tools that can aid and support a child’s journey. #HipHopEd
Great time discussing my brother's @chrisemdin book with @MACS_Pgh and @PghKids An honest dialogue and a great starting for cultivating a love for learning and teaching #HipHopEd
Love of learning means you are open to learning no matter what space you step into. Learning can happen anywhere and from anyone. As educators, we must model a love for learning. #HipHopEd
Makes me think of M. Scott Peck's definition of love, where he says love is nurturing someone else's growth. Nurturing growth is exactly what schools should be about. #HipHopEd
As a student you don’t want to learn the same lesson over and over so as a teacher who loves teaching you shouldn’t teach the same lesson the same way over and over either #HipHopEd
Love in THIS,our reality also requires expectations & agreed upon shared understandings..w/ inherent power dynamics that seek not to punish but to edify/educate both parties/roles #HipHopEd
Address problematic practices in your school, in your colleagues classrooms and offices, even if it makes you uncomfortable. You don’t love your students if you consistently send them into hostile environments #HipHopEd
Would you consider a love relationship healthy if your partner only wanted to know just a part of you? How many teachers only want to know the part of the students that they can see and teach? #HipHopEd
This is everything Tim. Just discussed this w/my Dean last week. He’s trying to control students, I’m challenging him to teach and support them in self-regulation/controlling themselves. #HipHopEd
A teacher's "love for learning" is not only about learning from peers or a book, the students you engage on a daily basis have a lot to us as well. #HipHopEd#respecttheirknowing
Nurturing growth is ideally why we are motivated to teach. However nurturing growth is very different from forcing results. Schools too often opt for the latter. #HipHopEd
I like that you included love of subject. So many teachers have a basic understanding of the subject they teach, with no willingness to explore at a higher level. Love of subject means you maintain a passion & curiosity that you can share with students #HipHopEd
and I been learning about theccshow and the state/evolution of street, dialogue, politics, & streaming in 2019 w/ Love & understanding #WeGotMail#HipHopEd
See, teach & think they can reach while ignoring &/or complaining about what they don’t understand or that may take 2 much work to comprehend #hiphoped
Would you consider a love relationship healthy if your partner only wanted to know just a part of you? How many teachers only want to know the part of the students that they can see and teach? #HipHopEd
The most memorable teachers I had are memorable not for the love they had for me but for the LOVE they had for the subject they taught. As a kid I just remembered their passion! If they were taught to properly engage the kids & share that love #ItCouldBeABeautifulThing#HipHopEd
The Love that we share for teaching and engaging our students should have room to be challenged and grow. It shouldn't be relegated to who we deem as the 'good' students or professed solely when receiving praise/awards #HipHopEd
Developing and recognizing love in teaching & learning spaces also needs to be about showing commitment to learn from the history, politics, epistemology plus the brilliance of Latinx, Black, Native & continental African youth, their parents and community. #HipHopEd
There's gon' be some stuff you gon' see
That's gon' make it hard to smile in the future
But through whatever you see
Through all the rain and the pain
You gotta keep your sense of humor
You gotta be able to smile through all this bullshit
Remember that! - 2Pac #HipHopEd
When worst comes to worst my students come first. That's my mindset and my love for teaching and learning. My contribution to the #HipHopEd community. Love y'all! Can't stop, won't stop! ✌

Students are so much more than what we see in the classroom. When students feel that you love them, they are willing to share more of who they are. #hiphoped
