Q0: Welcome to tonight’s #WVEdChat on #ISS (In-School Suspension). Introduce yourself and share any #ISS experience you may have. #WVEdChat
  • MrPStrunk Feb 20 @ 8:02 PM EST
Hey all Phil from Northern Virginia. I teach 7th Grade US History II. Only experience with ISS was dropping work off there for teachers when I was a student and now as a teacher myself. #wvedchat @MathWithMsHawes @PHausTech
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:02 PM EST
Randall Black. Educator, Technology Specialist, and Podcaster. I'm your moderator for this evening. Currently not active in classrooms but my #ISS experiences were not very good! Poor managed and zero consistency between those tasked with supervision. #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:03 PM EST
Question 1 will be coming at 8:07 #WVEdChat
  • Mr_Oldfield - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:05 PM EST
#wvedchat Derek Oldfield. Asst Principal/AD. Experience has been mostly a babysitting ground. Hard to lrn at much depth w/o content specialist n the room. Have to wonder if most cases n those rooms were preventable.
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:07 PM EST
Q1: Define #ISS. What should it look like? #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:07 PM EST
Hey @teacherman_will Get in this #WVEdChat!
  • LBStrunk Feb 20 @ 8:07 PM EST
Hey there! My name is Laura Beth. I teach first grade. I do not have any experience with #ISS. I have had students suspended in past years but they have been out of school suspensions. #WVEdChat

HAPPENING NOW: @RGBlack316 moderating a discussion on in-school suspension. Follow along at #WVEdChat!
  • TeacherMan_Will Feb 20 @ 8:08 PM EST
#WVEdChat Will Totten, Technology Integration Specialist at @SpringValleyHS_ agree with what @RGBlack316, we actually did away with ISS this year due to lack of consistency and ineffectiveness at modifying behaviors (which is the goal right?)
  • MrPStrunk Feb 20 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: In School Suspension should be a place where students are removed from the general education setting due to high levels of inappropriate behavior, but they should still be given quality resources to learn during their time outside of the classroom. #wvedchat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:09 PM EST
#ISS should be a form of discipline that consists of isolation from the general population with strict guidelines and enforcement from those tasked with taking charge. It should not be a babysitting location without valuable work for them to complete and learn from. #WVEdChat
  • LBStrunk Feb 20 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: It depends on the grade level. Younger students will need more support since they are often unable to complete work independently. Firm support but with opportunities to succeed. #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:11 PM EST
    Question 2 at 8:14 #WVEdChat
  • Mr_Oldfield - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:11 PM EST
#wvedchat A1 I don't really know. I mean policy 4373 has defined interventions & includes ISS. I guess as an alternative to OSE, ISS could serve a role. What are the expectations? That's my Q. I think my expectations are too high.
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:12 PM EST
yes sir! try out @participatechat if you want an easier way to follow along. https://t.co/wRnKLU1ubc will get you to the #WVEdChat page on their site.

A2: Yes we have an "In School Restriction Room" with hired person to run it and help students with work if assistance is needed. We are expected to provide work to continue student learning, not to simply give them work to do work. #wvedchat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:15 PM EST
Yes. The middle school where I am currently based in my #TSS role does have an #ISS program. A retired educator covers it as a sub on the days it is needed. Not sure about other schools in the district currently. #WVEdChat

Same here. #wvedchat A2 I imagine that's the very description our ISS room would provide.

Is the individual hired to run that In-School Restriction room a certified personnel or are they more like an aide? #WVEdChat

More like an aide. She is a great asset to helping students learn from their missteps that brought them down to her room in the first place.

  • TeacherMan_Will Feb 20 @ 8:20 PM EST
Q2 I think I already answered this, but we stopped ISS this year. It was a lack of consistency and the fact we also utilized it poorly (e.g. if a student was tardy he/she was immediately sent to ISS... thus allowing them to get out of a test, presentation, etc) #wvedchat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:21 PM EST
Q3: What should the goal of #ISS be? Attendance? Behavior correction? Is it the first or last option? #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:21 PM EST
Definitely not the best route to take for #ISS. I couldn't agree more on ending it in those circumstances. #WVEdChat
    In reply to @TeacherMan_Will
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:23 PM EST
#ISS should first be a place of #reflection for the student on why they are there. Attendance, discipline, etc. can all be reasons for placement, but it should never be done simply as an alternative for good work by Ts and Admins to help find a solution for that student #WVEdChat
  • MrPStrunk Feb 20 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3:I see it as a behavior correction action that should be a last resort. The goal should be to remove the student from the gen education environment to demonstrate the behavior will not be tolerated, but also not let this absence from class be an absence of learning. #wvedchat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:23 PM EST

#wvedchat A3 I almost consider a separation for teachers and that student. Should it be all day or only during the class period the event occurred? I think that's a good Q. But the time separates T & S. Important thing is what does T do when kid comes back?
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:24 PM EST
#Exactly If the teacher immediately "dumps on" the student when they return, as if their absence for #ISS never happened, then we have missed the point and the correction of the behavior will have failed! #WVEdChat

    Question 4 at 8:28 #WVEdChat
  • Mr_Oldfield - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:26 PM EST
Definitely. A break in relationship has occurred, so how do u recover? Invest time to reflect w/that student. Ts should never, I mean never, take behavior from a kid personal. It's hard, but can't do it. Otherwise, how can u ever recover a relationship that's broken? #wvedchat
    In reply to @RGBlack316
  • TeacherMan_Will Feb 20 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3 #WVEdChat I think the goal of ISS has to be behavior modification.
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:28 PM EST
Q4: Who is responsible for monitoring the #ISS program at your schools or district? #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:28 PM EST
A4 I have seen teachers cover on a rotating basis in previous schools I worked; @cabellschools have a full-time service personnel member at each high school who does it; I've even seen schools bring in a substitute to cover #ISS; it's all over the board! #WVEdChat
  • Mr_Oldfield - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:31 PM EST
#wvedchat A4 Yea I've seen all over. I was at a MS where we placed that S n a room of a teacher in a diff grade level. In that case, there was very little support and anything that was completed was done so independently.
  • LBStrunk Feb 20 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: Behavior and work ethic. It should come before out of school suspension unless safety is the concern. #WVEdChat
    • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:21 PM EST
Q3: What should the goal of #ISS be? Attendance? Behavior correction? Is it the first or last option? #WVEdChat
  • Mr_Oldfield - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:33 PM EST
#wvedchat A4 We've got a full time person in ISS room. I honestly don't know if that person is an aide or an edu. Either way, who would want to spend an entire year in that room? Silent kids working on someone else's content. All year. Smh.
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:34 PM EST
Question 5 coming right up! #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:35 PM EST
Q5: How do we make time in #ISS meaningful while addressing behavior that resulted in the placement? #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:36 PM EST
A5: We need to be sure that the Ss behavior/reason for being there is addressed in a thoughtful, reflective manner before we EVER give them school work to do... How do we do that? I'm really unsure, but open to suggestions. #WVEdChat
  • Mr_Oldfield - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:39 PM EST
#wvedchat A5 I fear it just becomes easier to toss a kid in a room rather than follow up w/teacher, build capacity, discuss recovery options, and eval the feedback from the kid (most poor behavior is just feedback).
  • TeacherMan_Will Feb 20 @ 8:41 PM EST
A5 The problem with any punitive-based systems like ISS is that they are very inneffective on their own. You have to make going to class/staying engaged a high reinforcer. Programs like SWPBIS and classroom reward systems have to be tried before resorting to ISS. #wvedchat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:41 PM EST
    Here comes Question 6! #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:42 PM EST
Q6: Can #ISS be a collaborative learning environment for students assigned there? If so, how? #WVEdChat
  • MrPStrunk Feb 20 @ 8:42 PM EST
A5: I would actually really like it if students had to do some sort of legitimate reflection they had to complete before school work, and could not get away with "I don't know why I am here" answers. Genuine reflection can be a powerful tool. #wvedchat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:42 PM EST
I've been in schools were we tried classroom rewards systems, and the older the students were, the less they were interested because so many people set those up to be extremely juvenile in their execution #WVEdChat

  • MrPStrunk Feb 20 @ 8:44 PM EST
A6: Definitely something I am now going to wrestle with now for the next few days. #wvedchat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:44 PM EST
A6 Students sitting in silence all day does nothing for their personal growth; they are social creatures who need the interaction; without being collaborative on the tasks placed before them we are doing them a disservice #WVEdChat
  • Mr_Oldfield - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:44 PM EST
Yea, read Dan Pink's stuff. Alfie Kohn too. #wvedchat
    In reply to @RGBlack316, @TeacherMan_Will
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:45 PM EST
A6 (cont.) we need to find a way for them to work with those around them, not just on their school work, but on reflecting on why they are in #ISS and what they could do in the future to avoid it and remain in their classroom #WVEdChat
  • Mr_Oldfield - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:46 PM EST
#wvedchat Agree. Tough b/c that convo shld really involve the classroom T. And the classroom T often has to look in the mirror first. #toughjob

Q7: What happens if a student does not attend #ISS by skipping or being absent (excused or unexcused; suspended)? #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:49 PM EST
And what about those kids that aren't interested in those things? I find rewards system to be a bit naive at times in their assumption that all kids care about the possible "winning item." #WVEdChat
    In reply to @TeacherMan_Will
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:50 PM EST
A7 If a student is placed in #ISS because of their attendance, and then misses school, should we really be punishing them with #ISS or looking for a solution to why they aren't coming to school? #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:51 PM EST
A7 If they simply skip and go to class anyway, would a suspension out of school help them? I think not, but something has to be done to hold them accountable... I'm just not sure what! #WVEdChat
  • Mr_Oldfield - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:53 PM EST
Yea... have to get to the root. Must make teachers better. #wvedchat
    In reply to @RGBlack316
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:55 PM EST
A7 I worked at a school where we had a student not show up from day one until it was time for the state test. he was bribed to be there by another student. home life kept him from school. #ISS would have NEVER worked to get him there, but the admin tried. #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:56 PM EST
Q8: Has #ISS made changes to the climate of your school or district? If so, how? Does it work? #WVEdChat
  • RGBlack316 Feb 20 @ 8:57 PM EST
A8 I have not seen a situation in my experience where #ISS really worked. Students treated it like a joke, teachers were inconsistent, admins through students in for minor infractions. There was no reflection on why the student was there. #EpicFail #WVEdChat
