The goal of #wvedchat is to provide educators an opportunity to connect, share, and learn from others by engaging in conversations around issues and topics in education.
Hey all Phil from Northern Virginia. I teach 7th Grade US History II. Only experience with ISS was dropping work off there for teachers when I was a student and now as a teacher myself. #wvedchat@MathWithMsHawes@PHausTech
Randall Black. Educator, Technology Specialist, and Podcaster. I'm your moderator for this evening. Currently not active in classrooms but my #ISS experiences were not very good! Poor managed and zero consistency between those tasked with supervision. #WVEdChat
#wvedchat Derek Oldfield. Asst Principal/AD. Experience has been mostly a babysitting ground. Hard to lrn at much depth w/o content specialist n the room. Have to wonder if most cases n those rooms were preventable.
Hey there! My name is Laura Beth. I teach first grade. I do not have any experience with #ISS. I have had students suspended in past years but they have been out of school suspensions. #WVEdChat
#WVEdChat Will Totten, Technology Integration Specialist at @SpringValleyHS_ agree with what @RGBlack316, we actually did away with ISS this year due to lack of consistency and ineffectiveness at modifying behaviors (which is the goal right?)
A1: In School Suspension should be a place where students are removed from the general education setting due to high levels of inappropriate behavior, but they should still be given quality resources to learn during their time outside of the classroom. #wvedchat
#ISS should be a form of discipline that consists of isolation from the general population with strict guidelines and enforcement from those tasked with taking charge. It should not be a babysitting location without valuable work for them to complete and learn from. #WVEdChat
A1: It depends on the grade level. Younger students will need more support since they are often unable to complete work independently. Firm support but with opportunities to succeed. #WVEdChat
#wvedchat A1 I don't really know. I mean policy 4373 has defined interventions & includes ISS. I guess as an alternative to OSE, ISS could serve a role. What are the expectations? That's my Q. I think my expectations are too high.
A2: Yes we have an "In School Restriction Room" with hired person to run it and help students with work if assistance is needed. We are expected to provide work to continue student learning, not to simply give them work to do work. #wvedchat
Yes. The middle school where I am currently based in my #TSS role does have an #ISS program. A retired educator covers it as a sub on the days it is needed. Not sure about other schools in the district currently. #WVEdChat

Q2 I think I already answered this, but we stopped ISS this year. It was a lack of consistency and the fact we also utilized it poorly (e.g. if a student was tardy he/she was immediately sent to ISS... thus allowing them to get out of a test, presentation, etc) #wvedchat
#ISS should first be a place of #reflection for the student on why they are there. Attendance, discipline, etc. can all be reasons for placement, but it should never be done simply as an alternative for good work by Ts and Admins to help find a solution for that student #WVEdChat
A3:I see it as a behavior correction action that should be a last resort. The goal should be to remove the student from the gen education environment to demonstrate the behavior will not be tolerated, but also not let this absence from class be an absence of learning. #wvedchat

#wvedchat A3 I almost consider a separation for teachers and that student. Should it be all day or only during the class period the event occurred? I think that's a good Q. But the time separates T & S. Important thing is what does T do when kid comes back?
#Exactly If the teacher immediately "dumps on" the student when they return, as if their absence for #ISS never happened, then we have missed the point and the correction of the behavior will have failed! #WVEdChat
Definitely. A break in relationship has occurred, so how do u recover? Invest time to reflect w/that student. Ts should never, I mean never, take behavior from a kid personal. It's hard, but can't do it. Otherwise, how can u ever recover a relationship that's broken? #wvedchat
A4 I have seen teachers cover on a rotating basis in previous schools I worked; @cabellschools have a full-time service personnel member at each high school who does it; I've even seen schools bring in a substitute to cover #ISS; it's all over the board! #WVEdChat
#wvedchat A4 Yea I've seen all over. I was at a MS where we placed that S n a room of a teacher in a diff grade level. In that case, there was very little support and anything that was completed was done so independently.
#wvedchat A4 We've got a full time person in ISS room. I honestly don't know if that person is an aide or an edu. Either way, who would want to spend an entire year in that room? Silent kids working on someone else's content. All year. Smh.
A5: We need to be sure that the Ss behavior/reason for being there is addressed in a thoughtful, reflective manner before we EVER give them school work to do... How do we do that? I'm really unsure, but open to suggestions. #WVEdChat
#wvedchat A5 I fear it just becomes easier to toss a kid in a room rather than follow up w/teacher, build capacity, discuss recovery options, and eval the feedback from the kid (most poor behavior is just feedback).
A5 The problem with any punitive-based systems like ISS is that they are very inneffective on their own. You have to make going to class/staying engaged a high reinforcer. Programs like SWPBIS and classroom reward systems have to be tried before resorting to ISS. #wvedchat
A5: I would actually really like it if students had to do some sort of legitimate reflection they had to complete before school work, and could not get away with "I don't know why I am here" answers. Genuine reflection can be a powerful tool. #wvedchat
I've been in schools were we tried classroom rewards systems, and the older the students were, the less they were interested because so many people set those up to be extremely juvenile in their execution #WVEdChat
A6 Students sitting in silence all day does nothing for their personal growth; they are social creatures who need the interaction; without being collaborative on the tasks placed before them we are doing them a disservice #WVEdChat
A6 (cont.) we need to find a way for them to work with those around them, not just on their school work, but on reflecting on why they are in #ISS and what they could do in the future to avoid it and remain in their classroom #WVEdChat
And what about those kids that aren't interested in those things? I find rewards system to be a bit naive at times in their assumption that all kids care about the possible "winning item." #WVEdChat
A7 If a student is placed in #ISS because of their attendance, and then misses school, should we really be punishing them with #ISS or looking for a solution to why they aren't coming to school? #WVEdChat
A7 If they simply skip and go to class anyway, would a suspension out of school help them? I think not, but something has to be done to hold them accountable... I'm just not sure what! #WVEdChat
A7 I worked at a school where we had a student not show up from day one until it was time for the state test. he was bribed to be there by another student. home life kept him from school. #ISS would have NEVER worked to get him there, but the admin tried. #WVEdChat
A8 I have not seen a situation in my experience where #ISS really worked. Students treated it like a joke, teachers were inconsistent, admins through students in for minor infractions. There was no reflection on why the student was there. #EpicFail#WVEdChat
