Kim, I teach 4th for Norman Public Schools. What would I add to the teachers' lounge? Nobody goes in there at my site.. hmm Oh, I know, and it's simple, WATER to the vending machine. It only serves soda. blah! #Oklaed
Reminder: our resources, personnel, and experiences are different. Please give yourself some grace to analyze your own opinions about student discipline. Let’s grow tonight. #oklaed

Scott with @usaodrovers - would love to have the teachers lounge develop a sort of ideation/creation space. Mood lighting. Cool music. Overstuffed Chairs. All manner of books...#oklaed

#OklaEd John Bennett, Emeritus Engineering faculty, I serve mostly here in the kitchen of our home in Midlothian, Virginia. I would add a WiFi blocker to enhance honest conversation.

A1) Definitely shifting toward innovative. I want us to become really great at what we are implementing, before we move to something else. Shift takes time. #oklaed

Nancy Williams - Reading Specialist - Idabel Primary South. I don't have much time for the lounge. If I can find time for a cup of coffee, I'm doing well. #oklaed
Innovative forms--I like to have students complete janitorial work in the classroom which I feel teaches them there are consequences for actions but also allows them to take pride in the classroom. #OklaEd@UCOLME
A1 the longer I teach, the more I see how detrimental and ineffective traditional discipline is. But I really need to learn more about alternatives! #oklaed
A1: Somewhere in between. Sometimes there are circumstances that give Ss a reason for misbehaving, but sometimes it is just them testing limits. So I think the consequences should depend on the root cause of the problem. #oklaed
Q1) When it comes to student discipline, would you consider yourself closer to the traditional (no recess, ISS, suspension) or innovative forms? #oklaed
I haven't ever really had to worry about this - over 20 years I can think of only one time when I truly needed a student to disappear from the face of the earth...#oklaed
Q1) When it comes to student discipline, would you consider yourself closer to the traditional (no recess, ISS, suspension) or innovative forms? #oklaed
A1) nontraditional forms of discipline, i.e., natural consequences, giving students opportunities to fix/change behavior rather than punitive measures #oklaed
Q1) When it comes to student discipline, would you consider yourself closer to the traditional (no recess, ISS, suspension) or innovative forms? #oklaed
A1 - a combo. I don’t like to take recess away, but do believe a break can be helpful (ie ISS or OSS). I do like “reverse OSS” parent shadows for a day. Also trying more positive reinforcements this year “PAWS-itive referrals” #oklaed
A1- I want to be innovative, but there aren’t a whole lot of options. I will say I have very few hills I die on &try to handle discipline myself. A lot of times a convo w/a S tells me what I need to know & we go from there. I try to send very little to those above me. #oklaed

Q1) When it comes to student discipline, would you consider yourself closer to the traditional (no recess, ISS, suspension) or innovative forms? #oklaed
A1: I have recently started the move to more innovative forms. Traditional did not match my personality or teaching style, so it wasn’t working well for me in my classroom. #oklaed
Q1 I am never traditional. My students are 6! I refuse to take recess ... or any form of taking recess unless they are actually doing something AT recess #oklaed

A1. Still using traditional methods that clearly do not work for most. Same repeat customers each day. I am open to anything proven or experimental. #oklaed
A1: I’m innovative. I usually have 3 goals with discipline: 1. Restitution/apology 2. Learning the correct behavior & 3. fitting the punishment with the offense. So discipline might not be from a list of choices, but unique to each child and situation. #oklaed
A1: I am more a preventive disciplinarian. I work hard to ensure that my students understand all expectations and are stopped quickly when they are beginning to make bad decisions. I seldom need detention, ISS, suspension based on behavior IN my classroom. #oklaed

Q1) When it comes to student discipline, would you consider yourself closer to the traditional (no recess, ISS, suspension) or innovative forms? #oklaed
A1 part b - I really want to reduce our ISS and OSS days. When kids aren’t in the classroom, they are not learning. But, if they are in class disrupting, nobody is learning. Ready for new ideas #oklaed
#oklaed A1) We believe that discipline does not need to be one of the other. Morrish has a book called "With All Due Respect" which guides our training and discipline philosophy.
I am teaching a classroom management class - all of the psychology tells us not to have systems determined by teacher/admin control. Yet most schools are still set up this way. #oklaED
A1: Taking recess away isn't the answer. and even if it were you can still allow them outside to move, walk, something. Anyway, I have my Ss take a break bc in most cases that is what we both need. #Oklaed not real innovative, but it works.
A1: ISS,ISI, and suspension are the last of my options when it comes to student discipline. Restorative justice, and seeking to understand before being understood is my thing. #oklaed

Q1) When it comes to student discipline, would you consider yourself closer to the traditional (no recess, ISS, suspension) or innovative forms? #oklaed
A1)I would prefer innovative forms, but in MS sometimes ISD and suspensions are not optional when drugs, fights, and weapons are involved.Innovative ideas can work with bullying, drama, and disrespect.I don’t deal with discipline when it reaches that stage, and I’m glad. #oklaed
Q1) When it comes to student discipline, would you consider yourself closer to the traditional (no recess, ISS, suspension) or innovative forms? #oklaed
Might challenge you guys on this one! I haven’t seen a traditional and successful ISS program. So, I’d be interested to hear how yours is working! #oklaED
A2) Having the time to collaborate with teachers while they make the changes. We are all super-focused on our roles, which means that implementation has to be very strategic. #oklaed
A2 My biggest obstacle is... me. My preconceived notions about what school should be and how students should behave, my own personality and inclination towards taking everything seriously. If I were more easy-going, discipline would be easier for me. LOL #oklaed
#OklaEd A1: Were I given a classroom (right ...), I hope I’d be dedicated to facilitating students helping each other address individual issues or confrontational issues - WITHIN THE CLASSROOM. since this would be my approach to their learning, lots of problem solving exercises.

Q1) When it comes to student discipline, would you consider yourself closer to the traditional (no recess, ISS, suspension) or innovative forms? #oklaed
A2) Probably that I don't have ideas of how to respond. Instead, I usually try to handle issues until they escalate to needing the office. If it is something that will get them fired from a job, they go to the office. #oklaed
#oklaed
This! It really starts in the classroom. The more T’s are innovative and build relationships with S’s, the less likely S’s are to even get sent to the office. #oklaed
A1: I have recently started the move to more innovative forms. Traditional did not match my personality or teaching style, so it wasn’t working well for me in my classroom. #oklaed
When so many schools are following top heavy discipline, this is a systemic issue. Teachers can only do what will be supported by building admin. #oklaED
Might challenge you guys on this one! I haven’t seen a traditional and successful ISS program. So, I’d be interested to hear how yours is working! #oklaED
Riley has a rare genetic disorder—there are only 50 cases like hers in the entire U.S. Her mom says the #OklaEd tax-credit scholarship has been "a godsend" because it enables her to attend Special Care: "The impact on our family is huge." https://t.co/9KEOoXJ5YL
A2) In addition to wrapping my own mind around change or shifts, shifts toward more innovative discipline requires “support” (or at least “understanding”) from teachers, parents, students, upper admin, unions, and other stakeholders #oklaed
A2: My biggest obstacle is TIME. It's so hard to have the time to be innovative with discipline when most times it already interrupted my teaching. That's why taking a break works bc it's quick and I can keep teaching. Restore the relationship after instruction. #oklaed
Which would probably work if you had someone in a traditional ISS type setting. Not sure how to implement
that when our ISS is a 6th grader sitting in kindergarten, but I am open to ideas. #oklaed
A2 I think we have to move away from “discipline” as an effective means to modify behavior. I get sometimes we have no choice but we have to learn to teach behavior! #oklaed
A2 - Honestly, mindsets of adults. Moving away from traditional practices is hard when people believe it’s the only thing that “works” - I think there are times, but if we want long-term change we have to get to the root of the behavior. #oklaed
A2: Most people won’t take the time and be proactively look into other approaches. So many times we don’t take the time because we don’t think we have it. We do have time it’s about how it’s spent. #oklaed

A2) Discipline is a learning opportunity for correcting behaviors. My obstacle is the belief that a student hasn't been dealt with properly when others cannot see the whole picture from start to finish. Sometimes our students are conditioned to believe they deserve more. #oklaed
Agreed! Our In School Intervention program requires a re entry plan, sometimes a peer mediation form is filled out as an action plan to keep be intentional about not repeating the behavior. @chuck_tompkins#OklaEd

Yeah Moore still having 6th in elementary is hard! #oklaED I’m super happy to help. Might have that 6th grader read to the kinder. Have them mentor and talk about development!
A2) Discipline is a learning opportunity for correcting behaviors. My obstacle is the belief that a student hasn't been dealt with properly when others cannot see the whole picture from start to finish. Sometimes our students are conditioned to believe they deserve more. #oklaed
A3) “Walking recesses” are important. Allows other kids the ability to socially interact, but keeps the student focused on one way to exert their energy. #oklaed
I wasn’t attempting to be rude, I have gone to a trauma training, but the reality is that one training is not enough. And, I would love some advice on how to make that work with our kids. #oklaed
A3) If it involves minor student conflict. Allow conflict resolution to occur, and then give the students the opportunity to fix it on recess. Don’t go punitive when restoration can happen. #oklaed
The idea is the summer! August, at the beginning. Collaboration as a team to find effective ways. Then again during PLC to asses how it’s working. Time is the edu scapegoat!! #oklaED
A2) not just “discipline” but obstacle to innovative and personalized SEL support is the people resources. Would love to see behavior specialists in our schools and there to help us work as informed and proactive teams with hardest challenges we face #oklaED
#OklaEd A2: Can we say politicians and policy people mostly... Then add over-demanding mandates with regard to curriculum standards, time for mandated practicing for and taking standardized tests. Finally let’s not forget the lesson plans that’s to be followed.
I've seen several articles about adding meditation into the discipline regime. I would be interested to see how swapping recess for meditation might work. #OklaEd@UCOLME
A3) Missing recess may seem like a “good” punishment, but many discipline issues are linked with Ss not having an outlet for excess energy. Im here to hear about alternative suggestions and their successes. #oklaed
#oklaed A2) It is about the education and training of adults. Kids adapt. Teachers, families, and admin all need to understand the processes for training kids to be the best that they can be.
Students need to get the wiggles out - schools/teachers need to provide that opportunity. Look for some creativity in working through discipline issues. One idea: have student each lunch with your before they go to recess. #Oklaed
A3) In high school, I wish we had recess - except a lot of Ss would just sit around on their phones. My daughter often has to walk with her whole class during recess - whether she was a problem or not. #oklaed
A3: they can still attend recess and walk the playground. We have an ABL lab and if someone was available to be w/them that would be good too. It allows for movement which is necessary especially in elem kids. Sitting at a desk doing work. NO #oklaed
A3) If it involves minor student conflict. Allow conflict resolution to occur, and then give the students the opportunity to fix it on recess. Don’t go punitive when restoration can happen. #oklaed
A3) Middle schoolers at our school don’t have recess, but could you get students still go outside and pick up trash or walk around the playground? I’m not familiar with what can happen. #oklaed
A3) I would oppose taking a recess or break from a student. Perhaps the alternative would depend on the situation being corrected. A restriction from activities that involve students in conflict just needs a seperation rather than a ban from recess. #oklaed
A3) In high school, I wish we had recess - except a lot of Ss would just sit around on their phones. My daughter often has to walk with her whole class during recess - whether she was a problem or not. #oklaed
A3: Parts of recess used to address the behavior? Recess is necessary to release energy and building social skills, so possibly using part of that time for kids to reflect on their choices instead of ALL of the time could be beneficial for many of our kids we service. #OklaEd
A3: Anything that keeps Ss in class / activities like recess is preferable. After School Dentention is inherently better than In School Restriction or anything similar. #oklaed
I'm right there with you on this one! My energetic kids would be so much more focused if they could spend 30 minutes playing flag football or just bouncing around and socializing before their afternoon classes! #oklaED
A3 - #OklaEd The alternative is building relationship and a class that is so interesting that students DON'T want to misbehave or simply don't because they are so involved. I find with this strategy we never discuss RECESS as an option or behavior at all beyond simple reminders.
A4) Floating the student to a younger grade-level, to allow them to assist helping other students. The student is limited in missing instruction, while he/she benefits from helping other students. #oklaed.
A3: my students walk “Think tracks” during recess. Also, I like to send home a short restitution sheet (that I gained from @GreatExpOrg training). I ask parents to complete it with their child so they can also have a conversation about the child’s behavior. #oklaed
A3 many times we want to go where we believe it will have the biggest effect on the kid. It’s never a one size fits all. Sometimes pulling recess is going to make the problem worse especially if the child struggles to settle down and focus. #oklaed
#oklaed A2) It is about the education and training of adults. Kids adapt. Teachers, families, and admin all need to understand the processes for training kids to be the best that they can be.
A3 Logical consequences, discover triggers for the behavior and make needed changes...in some cases a private behavior chart (but not as a permanent solution ...the goal is always to move to intrinsic motivation.) #oklaed
When working on these kinds of issues - training needs to happen. So much training, so that teachers and admins are on the same page. Like a summer seminar type of situation. #Oklaed
Sometimes those things are warranted, but for minor offenses an alternative could be putting kids on cafeteria clean up duty--this would create physical labor which might make them not want to repeat the action. #OklaEd@UCOLME
A4 this is tough bc we are not discussing what took place for them to warrant being "disciplined". It is so different on Elem, MS, HS level. The offenses are so different. By the way I hate the word discipline or punishment. I dont have a better word, I just hate it. #oklaed
A4) Give the students a purpose to show trust and responsibility. Assigning some community service within the school and providing time for them to complete it shows the student that they have consequences but they are also contributing members of the school environment. #oklaed
A4 in school detention can be productive unless it’s run like a prison. With a focus on restorative practices it can be productive. Some kids are spiraling and need a way to distance themselves from opportunities to get in trouble. #oklaed
A4: I feel like a broken record, but restorative practices and relationship building.. I know it’s not 100% but I’ve never sent a kid to the office and only had one suspension (on a day I was gone) I’ve never had a kid do ISS...but several in our grade.. #oklaed
A4) Discipline forms that limit Ss ability to legitimately learn should be avoided when possible—this why alternatives have benefit: address the issue but keep the learning happening. #oklaed
#oklaed A3) Here is the problem: Any approach to support student discipline requires... guess what... resources! People. People with training. Space. Did I mention, people?! Admin must support discipline.
ISR should be used as a last resort. But, you could restrict students to extra curricular. Maybe having the student give back to the school with community service. Last year, had some kids make poor decisions and put them on Mixay duty as their “punishment”. #oklaed
#OklaEd A3: My option would be to provide driving questions that students identify with (and aligned with standards - of little value IMO), set GENERAL expectations of their outcomes, and turn them loose. Most needs for discipline go away. Individual issues facilitated by me!!!
A4) I'm at a loss here. I have one hour where the best learning all semester happened the three days one kid was in ISS - and the S turned in more work than usual. It felt like a win-win. #oklaed
A4. ISR should be used as a last resort. But, you could restrict students to extra curricular. Maybe having the student give back to the school with community service. Last year, had some kids make poor decisions and put them on Mixay duty as their “punishment”. #oklaed
A4: In a district a used to teach in, Ss in ISS were allowed to attend class during a class period of the T's choice. So, the Ss were still learning, but not with their normal class. It allowed the Ssto learn through class instruction/activities, but with different Ss. #oklaed

A4 - I read an article (will have to find it) where a school allowed Ss to come up w/their consequence. They ranged but all involved Ss helping the school, teacher, or other students. I like the idea of a consequence that has a positive outcome. #oklaed
A4. I’m all for natural consequences with a safety net. I’m so over the “we’re preparing them for the real world. Let them take a zero” narrative. Prepare them. Don’t treat them as if they are already there! I’ve supervised ISS before. It’s TORTURE for a kid with ADHD. #oklaed
A3b I don’t view recess as just play time...recess is an important time for learning social skills, solving problems, and getting along with others...I rarely take it away. #oklaed
A4 Developing a culture in school that signifies a true climate of mutual respect at all levels. Very little need for iss or detentions that rarely change behavior. #OklaEd

I never sent a kid to the office either. What can a child learn in the office that he/she couldn't better learn in the classroom with me? Besides which, sending a kid to the office would feel like I was abdicating my authority/responsibility. #oklaed
A4 - I read an article (will have to find it) where a school allowed Ss to come up w/their consequence. They ranged but all involved Ss helping the school, teacher, or other students. I like the idea of a consequence that has a positive outcome. #oklaed
A4 I wish I had a good answer here but ISD is tough on classroom community, on direct instruction, on self-esteem (especially with students who may be performing lower than their peers). We need a different option. #oklaed
YUP! We said it in April. We say it now. We will say it on Election Day. We'll keep saying it until lawmakers hear us.

Q5) Children with adverse childhood experiences, and children of parents with adverse childhood experiences, have been linked to an increased likelihood of behavioral disorders.
What can we do to proactively support these families in our classroom/school/district? #oklaed
A4: In school restriction downplays the importance of direct instruction and plays right into the hands of education reformers. Anything besides out of school suspension is better than ISR. #oklaed
Restore the relationship you harmed! Love this but definitely means you have to build relationships! Which you should be doing anyway! Because that will also cut down on problems! It’s like it’s all......connected 😎 #oklaed

So - this might be a crazy idea and @MrGragg discussed this earlier...But what if each student had to be active in at least two school activities? Where other students are counting on them? #Oklaed
A4 - Reverse suspension (ask parent to shadow the student for part or all of the day). Builds relationship with parents and either 1)Students behave better and we have a new expectation or 2) Parents see what we see #oklaed
So - this might be a crazy idea and @MrGragg discussed this earlier...But what if each student had to be active in at least two school activities? Where other students are counting on them? #Oklaed
A1) A mix of both. I wish I were more non-traditional than I am. I try to use natural consequences, but sometimes I get stuck. I use Love and Logic a lot. "Bummer dude" is more effective than you'd think! #OklaEd
A5) Host events where families don’t have to spend a dime. This provides the family with a sense of ownership in the school. Relationships pay off big when you must have difficult conversations. #oklaed.

Teaching kids to make rational decisions; teaching kids that even if they make a mistake, they are still loved and won't be given up on; teach kids about decision making #OklaEd@UCOLME
Irving Middle School (in Norman) lobbied hard for one equipped ISS teacher. It’s become IRP (Irving Restoration Program). Counselor visits daily. Kids have exit work. It’s wholistic. Proud of the work being done there. #oklaed

I think this is something that can be done initially, then pull back from later on tonight as tutoring. Both are looked at as negative from their side. However, I'd like to be able to provide standard based tutoring to students at all levels. #oklaed
Absolutely! Trauma issues are getting addressed early by our LPCs and helping to limit these issues manifesting themselves as behavioral/disciplinary issues. #oklaed

A4: Definitely depends on the issue, but it should be very specific to whatever the misbehavior was. Anger outbursts= time with counselor to talk about why they may be doing that. Detention does not solve the issue. #oklaed
Q5) Children with adverse childhood experiences, and children of parents with adverse childhood experiences, have been linked to an increased likelihood of behavioral disorders.
What can we do to proactively support these families in our classroom/school/district? #oklaed
A5 I’ve always believed we should host parenting classes for parents. Hard to get them to participate.... we have to make sure we are not trying to exclude them and their kids early on because they are hard. #oklaed
A4) My issue with ISR, etc, as it is sometimes needed to regroup, is how it is used... Ss need time to think about their actions, but w/in the class community there needs to be a plan to reenter that sews connection & doesn't further punish the S for missing classwork #oklaed
I know that this sounds so simple but let's begin by simply loving them and showing them that we truly care. Building a solid trusting relationship will always be the first step in support. #Oklaed

A5- First, Ts & schools have to understand ACEs & their impact. Then we work towards trauma informed schools. Then we advocate & lobby #okleg to fund our schools so we can provide Ss w/the resources they need - like maybe counselors who don’t serve 500 Ss 🤷🏼♀️ #oklaed

A5) We could do a lot with counselors, plans, etc., but it ALL TAKES $$$. You can have a great relationship with your Ss and still have them act up or have a bad day (as we all do) and shut down the whole class. Lasting help costs in time or $$ #oklaed
Q5) Children with adverse childhood experiences, and children of parents with adverse childhood experiences, have been linked to an increased likelihood of behavioral disorders.
What can we do to proactively support these families in our classroom/school/district?

#oklaed A4) Some schools that we have worked with has a process in which kids are in the class but with restrictions- basically in-class suspension? But again, this requires administrative support and a team.
Oklahoma has way to many adverse experienced students. This is an issue that needs to be addressed at the community level with support from the state. We have to help those who need it most so we can have the best future as a society. #oklaed

Q5) Children with adverse childhood experiences, and children of parents with adverse childhood experiences, have been linked to an increased likelihood of behavioral disorders.
What can we do to proactively support these families in our classroom/school/district? #oklaed
A5: Parent involvement which means including parents in a non-defense manner. Let them be the expert. Have them come to parent nights that are focused on their desire:cooking, painting, relaxing. Have someone watch the kids in the common area. #oklaED
Then with communication make it advantageous to them! Slowly ease in healthy behavior talk. Life skills, fun, parent-kid connection topics, etc. #oklaED

A6) Pipe-dream for secondary: some students are on a 7am-2pm schedule, while other students are on a 3pm-10pm schedule. Our schools are already open for sporting events in the PM, why not open them for learning? #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A5 make sure we find a way to include the difficulties as opposed to excluding them. Don’t tell a parent their child can’t go on a field trip unless the parent goes unless there is no other way. These parents many times can’t go. #oklaed
Built in breaks; students need time to take a step back and breathe; even at the middle school level they need at least a few minutes of unstructured free time #OklaEd@UCOLME
A5: Definitely expose our young people and adults to appropriate responses to adversity. Your current reality doesn’t dictate your final outcome. Practice what you preach, inspect what you expect. #oklaed

A6: smaller class sizes, more COUNSELORS that can counsel, schools that kids WANT to be at, classrooms that kids want to be IN, relationships for EVERYONE. Grace instead of “the book”. 🤷🏻♀️ #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A5: Communicate!! Support them by providing them with any and all available resources to help them. Build a relationship with student AND parents no matter the circumstance. All have to trust you before you can ever help. Consider family dynamic always. #oklaed
Any of our new or modernized building have large common areas near the office. We've created a place where students can go as many teachers provide "flexible dismissal" #Oklaed

Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A6) The best answer I can think of for these items and so much of what we should be doing in our schools boils down to refocusing schools so that we always seek first to do what is best for students! Get our comforts and egos out of the way. #KidsFirst#oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A5 - We have a couple of S's who had major behaviors last year, & have had HUGE growth. Cuz mom got them outside help. When their outside therapist checks them out once a week we don’t fight it. More learning is occurring even missing a little school #oklaed#community
Q5) Children with adverse childhood experiences, and children of parents with adverse childhood experiences, have been linked to an increased likelihood of behavioral disorders.
What can we do to proactively support these families in our classroom/school/district? #oklaed
1. Everybody eats twice every day.
2. Every students gets some basic healthcare/check-ups
3. Students who need social/emotional resources get those without any issue
#oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
Y not kill several birds w 1 stone. How bout we make it mandatory that students are involved n the maintenance and cleaning of their own school. This creates the no-pressure environment that gets them involved & gives them a sense of ownership & belonging to their school #oklaed
A6) Space. Bigger classrooms, fewer kids. It's hard to behave when you are stuck in an overcrowded classroom all day with the kid you always get in trouble with. There also isn't a space to "get away." #OklaEd
A5) I agree with wrap around services and I think we can add Moving away from harmful grading practices that exacerbate power and control dynamics, empower students and families to own their learning and be advocates for their education. #oklaed
A6) There should be a list of Ss who should never be in the same class. Longer passing periods. Continuity in how school rules are enforced. Community service requirement. #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A6 - 7 class periods in a day is way too many for HS Ss. We need more flexibility w/time & grad requirements to get Ss more connected w/school. Flexible seating/collaborative spaces all help. #designthinking & PBL that works across content areas. #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A6 we have to put the effort into our scheduling practices and put the needs of these kids on the table. Sometimes we don’t because we like to say these kids don’t deserve special considerations due to their poor behavior. “It’s not fair!” #oklaed
A2) Biggest obstacles? Lack of training for teachers, schools, local boards. High mobility of families, students which makes it extra difficult to connect and build relationships. Lack of funding for counselors to serve kids in schools and communities. #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A6 When Ss struggle with behavior...the first question I ask myself...”what do I need to change for Ss to be successful?”...Know your Ss create a positive learning environment...be willing to adjust to their needs. #oklaed
A6 so many ideas, so little time. MAKE YOUR SPACES STUDENT CENTERED. Our kids are not mini-adults. They need space and natural light, places to go to cool off or visit, places to grab a snack, places to sit and relax that are attractive and fun and revolve around THEM #oklaed
Also, good character is not always compliance... do I want a compliant child or an empathetic, compassionate, understanding, creative, innovative, respectful child. ??? #oklaed#JustSaying
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A6. I think this has to start in the ESs. To many times when they come to the HS, S’s were put on the wall at recess, told to sit in the hall, had to write sentences, etc and was never asked why they acted up. So at the HS is trying unravel years of not been listen too #oklaed
A6: Let the students choose, if they don’t want a 7:45 start time then let them start later, or if they don’t want math 1st hour then so be it. Make it more flexible, may make it more enjoyable for some. Ask the students, they will tell you what they think. #oklaed
School Counselors are not meant to be therapist. I’ve been both. There’s a huge difference. But SCs should be helping with tier 1, 2, & 3 supports. Working with Ts, Admins, & direct services to Ss & families. #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A6) Whew! I think it starts with putting students first! Wrap around services, more time for collaboration btwn educators, structures that prioritize Ss and their growth, etc ... #oklaed
I would also add to my list, from the high school perspective, not every student needs to be there. Let's let those students have a different experience that can help them prepare for their future. #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A6) I would have a school that feels less restrictive, is not funded based on ADM, a place where staff and students learn together and at individual pace, where students aren't given labels such as SpEd, everyone is treated with respect. #oklaed
Q6) How can we reimagine the structures of our schools to proactively support student behavior? (scheduling, physical spaces, instructional strategies/models, etc.) #oklaed
A2) Biggest obstacles? Lack of training for teachers, schools, local boards. High mobility of families, students which makes it extra difficult to connect and build relationships. Lack of funding for counselors to serve kids in schools and communities. #oklaed
A7) Find a staff member that bonds with the student, regardless if they are the student’s teacher. Let this person sign reading logs, mentor during the day, hook them up with supports. Create families within the school. #oklaed
A6: I think we need to change the way we view the behavior. Instead of "Why are they doing this" ( as in why are they doing this to me), think "WHY are they doing this? (what is happening w/he/she to cause this) #oklaed It's about them, not US.
Q5) Children with adverse childhood experiences, and children of parents with adverse childhood experiences, have been linked to an increased likelihood of behavioral disorders.
What can we do to proactively support these families in our classroom/school/district? #oklaed
#oklaed A6 Have a plan to support teachers with quick team responses when contacted by text or phone. Track behaviors. Planning on using sensory room for any child needing time to refocus.
Q5) Children with adverse childhood experiences, and children of parents with adverse childhood experiences, have been linked to an increased likelihood of behavioral disorders.
What can we do to proactively support these families in our classroom/school/district? #oklaed
#oklaed A6) People matter. The people is what make it. Yes, you can come up with a schedule and new ways to support behavior but without the right people making the right moves, it means nothing. #trainingmatters
A7) All Ss could use a mentor of some sort, but I'm not sure how schools could help. Big Brothers Big Sisters can help these Ss a LOT, but they have to be identified first - the younger, the better. #oklaed
A7 we have to make sure the kid knows we care about them and will always do what ever possible no matter what happens. We can change their parents but we can make sure we are there for them. #oklaed
A7) engaging the P/family where they are at; focused on how the school can engage the parent not how the parent engages with the school on only there terms... but also just finding out what interest the S and their P/family and engaging them through that #oklaed
A7: It's important to T's to communicate Student needs to other staff. Faculty meetings are a great time for this. Let your colleagues know the family dynamic, the need there, so everyone can step in and be there. Nobody knows if you don't say anything. #oklaed
A7) Schools must not seek to replace the parent. However that does not mean we cannot provide the care for our students, look at each situation as an opportunity to understand the why, and use our judgement to help each of our students fill the gaps that they are missing. #oklaed
A7) Have a faculty member serve as a mentor for that S and step in & fulfill some of the parental roles that are missed: attend a PT confernce with the S, escort the S across the field on Senior night, be that S’s cheering section at science fair-choir concert-etc #oklaed
A7 - Create an advisory time that provides the S a T that stays with them until they leave. Advisory can become a family environment & give Ss an adult they know looks after them.
But really, we should be creating this community in our classrooms anyway. #oklaed
A7 Schools can assist one or more Ts in mentoring Ss, seeing and nurturing their strengths, and helping them through their struggles as they navigate our educational system. Ss need at least one person who cares about THEM. #oklaED
A6: I think we need to change the way we view the behavior. Instead of "Why are they doing this" ( as in why are they doing this to me), think "WHY are they doing this? (what is happening w/he/she to cause this) #oklaed It's about them, not US.
A7 School has to become the support for that student with the shared mission of breaking this generational chain. No other option student must graduate with career plan #oklaed
A7: last week my husband’s S cried because mom had to work and couldn’t attend her concert. I said to him tell them I’ll work for her next time she can attend. I might be serious! #oklaed
A7: Also if a student lacks parental support set that student up with a mentor , or big brother/big sister if your school participates. Do something! I mentored a student for 3 years that didn't have a mom. I did until she moved away. :( #oklaed
A7 TBH—all of our kids need Ts as mentors no matter the level of parental engagement. If you aren’t making those caring connections to your kids, I’m not saying you’re doing it wrong but.... #oklaed
A8: We don’t have to do what we’ve always done. We can do now what Ss always needed but we didn’t know until now. Let’s do something different together. #oklaed
A8) It depends on the student and the behaviors, when a T calls me to talk about a particular S or class I want to observe before giving advice but I always remind Ts that it might take a consistent interventions for several weeks (and it might not always work) #oklaed
I know I don’t get to contribute too much to the chat questions but I want you all to know that your passion for students and teaching really stands out during these chats. It’s very inspiring. #oklaed
A3) Not a fan of missing recess.I am open to consequences that match the offense, but I see benefits for after school det. I like that parents have to be involved in order for the Ss to get home & it gives me 1 on 1 time with Ss to talk about the behavior & build relationships.
A8 - Build a RELATIONSHIP with your students. Mainly the ones that are the hardest to build relationships with. It won’t fix ALL the problems, but a student who WANTS to be in your room, will have better behavior for you & learn more #oklaed
Hi #oklaED friends!! My name is Michele Shell and I am a first semester LIBM major at NSU-BA. I'm so excited to start my career eventually. I just wanted to say Hi and keep doing a great job. It is so important to be there for the students.
A8b) Slow down. Take time to listen. Don’t take everything personally. Motivate with positive reinforcement. Don't confuse the hard parts of teaching with not enjoying teaching. #oklaed
A8 - As w/everything in education I would ask them, “What would you want for your own child?” We should approach every decision w/the idea that if it’s not good enough for our kid then it’s not good enough for any. #oklaed
A8) Empathy—how would you want admin to treat you as a T when you’ve done something wrong? how would you want them to help teach & correct your behavior without publicly embarrassing you or having procedure that doesn’t fit the “crime”? #oklaed
A8) I have no advice because I'm still not sure I'm totally in the zone. I can see times when traditional discipline isn't helpful, but I'm not sure what it would look like to do things differently in my classroom. #oklaed
A8b Stop. Give the S and yourself time to calm down. Ask the S what happened. Listen. Respond with grace and compassion. Find a way to help the S succeed. You are on their side. #oklaED
A8 they have to first get over the belief that discipline alone will modify behavior in the difficult cases. Discipline typically has little positive effect. It takes hard work, a solid relationship, and persistence. We must understand we don’t get to give up ever! #oklaed
#oklaed A7) How do we define "support"? Does our conception of an "ideal parent" cloud our ability to reach out... be supportive ourselves...be inclusive? Perhaps the first steps involve building an authentic relationship with the family that loves the kid they send to school.
A8b) We just came back from a break, RETEACH procedures and expectations, just like you did on day 1. Hallway, cafeteria, recess, we ALL need reminders. #thesouthgateway#oklaed
I know I don’t get to contribute too much to the chat questions but I want you all to know that your passion for students and teaching really stands out during these chats. It’s very inspiring. #oklaed
A8 Get to know your students, what triggers negative behavior, and what encourages positive behavior. Create a flexible, student centered space, where students are actively engaged in learning. #oklaed
A8 think about if you would want your child/niece/nephew/cousin/neighbor/self to be on the receiving end of the discipline you typically dole out. What would you want it to look like instead? #oklaed
A8 they have to understand how to remain above the emotions and avoid power struggles. It’s not personal analyze the situation and review data. Act rationally not emotionally. #oklaed
A8) Focus the attention of the teacher back to the "why" they want to teach. Most get into the profession to make a difference. The easy student is not the challenge or where our skills are needed most. The difficult student is where our skills and talent can be effective. #oklaed
A8: I would ask them how they went about building relationships and what exactly were their expectations. The kids that act up continuously are often the ones that need us most. #oklaed
A8: discipline is not “one size fits all”. I would challenge them to re-evaluate their policies to see if what they are doing is a bandaid on top of the issue or if it address the root cause. #oklaed
Q9) What is something that you are implementing in your classroom/school/district/community that is reimagining student discipline? Take a moment to brag! #oklaed
Q8b- #oklaed I get asked this a lot because we have good classroom community. I see each one as a person and they see me as an ally. Its about real RELATIONSHIPS and I can't give you instructions for that. It has to come from the heart.
When something goes wrong, we are rushing into ineffective or unsustainable solutions rather than staying with problem identification & solving. When we fix the wrong things for wrong reason, the same problems continue to surface. It’s costly & demoralizing. #oklaED@BreneBrown
I know I don’t get to contribute too much to the chat questions but I want you all to know that your passion for students and teaching really stands out during these chats. It’s very inspiring. #oklaed
Mary Fallin's pension will be $176K annually.
Drew Edmondson’s current pension is $149K annually. (If he becomes governor, he’ll also get an annual salary of $147K.)
One local #oklaed superintendent retired at age 61 and is paid $174K annually. https://t.co/XZJRho1YnW
A9) I love that we are beginning Student-Care Teams...talking about academic, medical, physical, emotional needs. We can then pair some students with needed resources. I love our LPC program! #oklaed
Q9) What is something that you are implementing in your classroom/school/district/community that is reimagining student discipline? Take a moment to brag! #oklaed
Working with my pre-service students to understand that the whole discipline/punishment thing is not the only way. There are better ideas/models for them to use in their future classrooms. #Oklaed
Q9) What is something that you are implementing in your classroom/school/district/community that is reimagining student discipline? Take a moment to brag! #oklaed
A8b) Stop 🛑 Breathe 🌬 Think 🤔. Repeat as needed and don’t feel bad about using your “phone a friend” lifeline and ask another T or your admin if timing allows. #oklaed
A9 I have just been focusing on S relationships for the past 3 years. When I am seeing a discpline problem, I talk to the S. Then I talk to the Ps or our counselor. I also tell my Ss that I love them, and I want them to be successful in and out of my class. #oklaed
A9: not in a classroom or a school anymore. But I am happy to visit one anytime so that I can try new strategies and then brag on myself. Any takers? #oklaed
A5) Connect before we correct.
Building a relationship that fosters trust with our students and families takes time and sometimes creativity—but we can find a way. #oklaed
Q5) Children with adverse childhood experiences, and children of parents with adverse childhood experiences, have been linked to an increased likelihood of behavioral disorders.
What can we do to proactively support these families in our classroom/school/district? #oklaed
A9 I don’t know if it’s reimagined...but behavior RTI has been effective w/my students, not punishment but a learning time to practice behaviors #oklaed
We have had a lot of topics over the past year that can truly help teachers. These topics will take time to learn. How do we create this space in the limited number of PD days available? How do we compensate teachers if we do this in the summer? #Oklaed
Here is my math and data side coming out.. do you have a form or questionnaire that you look at for each of your kids. Makes me think, I need to take attendance to our next RTI meetings. Need to look at the “whole kid” #oklaed
A9. Very very hard to change discipline! It takes a team that is on board with teaching as much or more as we discipline. So hard to get people to understand and get behind the movement! Very much worth the battle! Our kids are worth it. #oklaed
A9) We are having conversations, exploring options, and practicing with innovation in @MoorePublicSch. Evidence? One of our principals moderated tonight and I saw many of our Ts and Admins participating tonight! #oklaed
Q9) What is something that you are implementing in your classroom/school/district/community that is reimagining student discipline? Take a moment to brag! #oklaed
A8b: Have a conversation with your student for the sole purpose of learning more about THEM. Remember that you became a teacher because you love students. Not because you love complaining about them, assigning detentions, being ridiculously strict. #oklaed
That's an excellent start. But Ts still need to know what to do to help when a S comes to school angry, hungry, in a bad mood, tired, unprepared... #oklaED
A9) At Emerson I want my staff to utilize our parent liaison, social worker, and counselors to seek ways to help our students academically and behaviorally. We seek partnerships with agencies to help when we are not enough. We want our students at school and not O/ISS. #oklaed
Q9) What is something that you are implementing in your classroom/school/district/community that is reimagining student discipline? Take a moment to brag! #oklaed
Probably @ShariGateley because I interviewed her for the Passing Notes podcast (episode to come next week) and she is an amazing advocate for the profession and our kids #oklaed#passingnotes
