A1: Every time @_on11 and I have taught @scratch, we make sure to combine up-front visual examples with the provided videos. We let the students explain and show to each other what successful code they've written. #FearlessEdChat
A1: all of my lessons! I purposefully used limited text on a slide, always had an accompanying visual, and would verbally explain the slide #fearlessedchat
A1: just being honest here… I pretty much have to hear and see things in order to learn them. So, when I am teaching others – I try to extend the same opportunities. #fearlessedchat
I try to limit text & use audio to enhance learning w/ my Ts and Ss. Sometimes that means allowing music in the background, sometimes it means me asking them to come up w/ their own. I use #sketchnotes a lot as well. They love that!
#fearlessedchat
A2: Give sentence structures for kids to work with so they don't have major anxiety when the discussion starts. Utilize a "speed dating" technique with provided questions to encourage 1 on conversations. #fearlessedchat
A1. When teaching the crime scene investigation to SS. SS could read, listen to audio descriptions of characters. So they were taking in information more than one way!#fearlessedchat
A2. I definitely recommend a google classroom discussion in addition to an in person one. Many students are afraid to speak in public but have amazing ideas. #fearlessedchat
As we chat now, my student leaders are answering 6 discussion ?'s from their summer reading using @Flipgrid Once graded, I'll open up for peer discussion. I also love using google groups for this. I think it teaches them so much including digital citizenship.

Q1 Today was a lesson to intro depth & complexity icons and Content Imperatives from #GiftedEd I read Tikki Tikki Tembo aloud, then we I.D. patterns, changes over time, ethics, rules(icon stuff). Tomorrow we listen to audio & look for text evidence of the icons. #FearlessEdChat
A2: Set up the expectation that when your students leave their discussion time, they should have at least one example of how someone’s ideas expanded, challenged, or changed their previous thinking. #fearlessedchat
A2. Start with an open-ended question on topics and give SS time to reflect and think about answers. Peer to peer discussion is helpful , too.#fearlessedchat
A2 Each table has a frame listing sentence stems for Accountable Talk (a.k.a. scholarly talk/discussion) so we discuss appropriately. We also use driving questions for #inquiry so our discussions are high level and focused on our purpose/objective. #FearlessEdChat
A3: I came to school the day after my grandma passed away. I wanted to get things in order, knowing I would be out for a few days to prep for the wake & funeral. I shared what happened with my Ss, but I shouldn't have been there. #fearlessedchat
A3. Our experiences often add to our passion in what we teach. I love my job so much and when I’m teaching teachers a new tool, I’m so excited about it that my passion spills over, rousing excitement and interest from my participants #fearlessedchat
A3: Um. Everyday. I had a tough childhood, ppl told me I "couldn't" often, even teachers- my why is teaching the student who is like me. #Empowering and Inspiring them to do the thing they think they cannot!
#FearlessEdChat
Yes! You can moderate the discussion and allow students to comment on each other’s posts. I’ve seen some VERY deep opinions from kids in our school! #fearlessedchat
A4. Working with our SS on comparing and contrasting synthetic things which are made through different processes. SS need to touch, feel, remember processes. #fearlessedchat
A3 Well, much of the time...my job is to help kids make text to self connections yes? (and text to text, text to world, etc). So I model making these connections too. Sharing one's 'life' with others builds rapport too. The kids did tell me I talk to much tho, lol #FearlessEdChat
I'm even using a rubric now so I can teach them how to have a good discussion no matter which side of the issue they are on. Feel free to use: https://t.co/HX3UwZQjlN#FearlessEdChat
A4: This was my goal for my @cisdSWAT class! They are teaching their peers and their teachers/administrators every single day! That changes their learning more than anything b/c it's real-world! #FearlessEdChat
A4: This year, I have a class blog, where Ss submit posts that explain a specific skill they learned that might help others. The blog will be for all my grade levels (6-7-8), so my hope is that the "age" wall will be broken as they learn from each other! #fearlessedchat
@mullinsmath uses @Flipgrid to have her students teach each other how to solve math problems. Students end up with 25 video examples of how to do math! #fearlessedchat
Apparently, yes. I can be "distracting" when the kids are trying to work independently...the kids wrote letters introducing themselves to me and I asked what they need from me as their teacher. #FearlessEdChat
A4 Set an expectation of #EachOneTeachOne from day 1. I simply expect kids to check on one another, help one another, etc. I see 80-100 kids a day; There is not enough of me to go around. Kids are experts in many areas (esp. tech) so why not honor their expertise? #FearlessEdChat
A5. I was big into PBL, I would give my kids a challenge question and they created solutions. I always learned so much! Kinda made my job more awesome bc I was engaged in their findings, not just grading s project. #fearlessedchat
A5 Early in my teaching career, I introduced a new iPad app to my class of 2nd graders. Within 20 minutes one boy had far surpassed my knowledge of the app and was answering student questions. I realized I was lucky to be able to learn from & with my students. #fearlessedchat
A5 I always learn from my students. The 6th gr social studies curriculum is ancient civilizations so routine convos are about culture, home countries language, customs & traditions, whose relatives were in what historical event/crisis, etc. Kids are interesting! #FearlessEdChat
A5: I feel like my job is a co-learning environment everyday. I learn w/ my Ts as I help them with lessons and I learn from my Ss b/c they are full of knowledge no one has tapped into yet! Many times b/c of this I adapt my plan and seize the moment!
#FearlessEdChat
Fun! I go deep.... combining the #SDGs (sustainable development goals) to connect to #socialjustice issues too. We learn a lot about ourselves and others this way! #fearlessedchat
In one of our exp. when we reinvented the telegragh with laboratory supplies. We had made 2devices and connected them to transfer the codes. #fearlessedchat
A1: when I was in the classroom, I blandly read an excerpt of a story, had Ss answer 10 ? Abt it the we discussed; almost all Ss missed every ?, so I personally acted out the scene from the story, had them go back and answer ? & they all got it! #FearlessEdChat#punkrocklibrarian
A4: In the library: students tutor one another, which in my personal experience from when I tutored peers in school helped me better retain the information. #FearlessEdChat#punkrocklibrarian
A5: my 1st yr teaching grammar, I was struggling reintroduce along w/ my Ss abt a particular “rule”, I had an epiphany mid-lesson, scrapped what I had started w/, started all over, allowing me to teach the “rule” in a way that clicked w/ Ss! 💡 #FearlessEdChat#punkrocklibrarian
