Also, fair warning - we had state testing all day and, needing a laugh, I may have gone heavy on memes and comics.
Jordan from Princeton, NJ. Double dipping on and tonight.
Happy Tuesday! Phil, 5th grade teacher, from NJ.
One hour until ! Our topic is the ULTIMATE teacher.Come join the discussion!

Hi everyone - I'm Paul Solarz, a 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, IL. Great topic!

A1 Ss have procedures of classroom internalized, can function w/minimal intervention.
A1: organized chaos that can give you attention at a moments notice. Ss working as though you're not there.
Matt from NY - jumping into for a bit!
A1: Students are on-task, engaged & focused. Ss correct each other respectfully before teacher needs to. Self-awareness is key.
Robin Diedrichs 4th grade DeLand Florida coming in to learn! I want to head in this direction!
A1: Noise is the sound of engagement! Ss working with each other to problem solve! Teacher as a facilitator, not a crutch!
A1: Ss know what to do, how to do it, and T is a helping goals be met rather talking all period.
Hi from Florida - I'm a middle school counselor
A1 Expectations clear and practiced. Respect and perseverance are evident. https://t.co/wU5nSlKSXf
Q1: What are some of the traits of a well-managed classroom?
A2 This has been a huge issue for me this year. Multiple tweets coming...
Terrie Katy, TX from mighty Bluejay land. A student-led classroom is a community that respects and responds to all needs.
A2: Ss without passion, an understanding of expectations, or those lacking skill set/ability to manage themselves.
A1-Engagement-Ss know the routines/procedures/expectations-Little lost time due to behavior-Enjoyment of learning on both Ss&T side
Yes! Giving Ss actual time to work rather than sitting and listening passively https://t.co/xYfy6WFuhW
A1: Ss know what to do, how to do it, and T is a helping goals be met rather talking all period.
A1 respect & trust are primary to a Student led class -- of teacher to students; students to teacher
A2 Combine group of Ss struggling with concept of S led classroom w/Ss who maybe care TOO much leads to a lot of conflict
Just include the hashtag in your tweets. Example:
A2 STs have to learn they need to share leadership responsibilities. A leader needs to learn to step back and let others shine.
Love that teacher is only a helper and not enforcer of CM. https://t.co/BY1K9k2boy
A1: Ss know what to do, how to do it, and T is a helping goals be met rather talking all period.
A2 This is one of those years where it's been the of school all year.
A2: Our current issue is that my Ss have become such close friends that they aren't very good at stopping their conversations.
A2 In my room? Changing blurting into respectful, productive conversation. :) We practice this a lot! https://t.co/9T6m2ozpXN
A2-Not currently truly Ss led so a prediction-Leadership skills by Ss, learning how to lead productively while learning, pacing?
A2: Students need to be properly prepared for a student led classroom. Expected behavior should be modeled.
A2: one problem in my class is instantaneous conversations springing up during a S's sharing. The sharing s is involved too!
YES!!! https://t.co/2OuaYgjXRU
A2 STs have to learn they need to share leadership responsibilities. A leader needs to learn to step back and let others shine.
Mine is similar in that some won't use constructive criticism anymore. Everything they do is awesome. https://t.co/w3oBZFUyvC
A2: Our current issue is that my Ss have become such close friends that they aren't very good at stopping their conversations.
Preach! A challenging blessing!
I love that the list of issues would still be envious to Ts who aren't letting Ss lead!
Even when they're on topic, some talk thru some Give Me 5's. We had a Class Mtg today about it & they've created a plan.
A2 at times student are too familiar with each other and cross personal boundaries --too comfortable with each other
Maybe your Ss could share those ideas with my class? Give Me Five has been a huge issue in my class this year as well.
Have you introduced "Quality Boosters" yet? We use them a lot and they're pretty tough on each other (but respectful)!
A3: I think it's important to let the students help set the rules. If it's going to be S led, they should have input.
I think that would be great, because we might benefit from that as well! A good heart-to-heart! https://t.co/u9Mskvy0iB
Maybe your Ss could share those ideas with my class? Give Me Five has been a huge issue in my class this year as well.
A3: Clear rubrics, clear instructions, clear expectations, clear daily goals. Oh, and lots of building upon prior skills.
It can be slow for some and not others. Model, talk it up among peers. I find myself placing my hands over my lips.
I will ask first, then temporarily take away power second. Some kids can't help themselves! It gets better!
A3-In the areas I am Ss led, group discussion to establish expectations, perhaps stemming from a need and modeling.
A3 Clearly set expectations - that include S input and are posted, practiced and have purpose! https://t.co/eHui0V8Xqg
I speak to Sts and listen to their concerns about stepping back. I also speak with Sts parents. https://t.co/3baFJk6N1C
How do you handle this? Suggestions?
Completely agree. I have 1 rule I wrote but the Ss wrote expectations, norms & procedures that work for Ss https://t.co/kNBfVKldU1
A3: I think it's important to let the students help set the rules. If it's going to be S led, they should have input.
A3 set goals by planning before the year starts; then through discussion & modeling; get Ss invested so they self monitor
I love Give me 5! Everyone stops and listens! https://t.co/t6ytNjnIzt
Maybe your Ss could share those ideas with my class? Give Me Five has been a huge issue in my class this year as well.
A2: Ss are unsure of how to use their responsibilities & power in a Student-Led classroom --- aren't used to a T giving up control!
Me too. It has been sooo successful in our class.
So important in order to keep the chaos from becoming chaotic! https://t.co/dLoafrTAeg
A3: Clear rubrics, clear instructions, clear expectations, clear daily goals. Oh, and lots of building upon prior skills.
I really seek out and reinforce when I see passive leadership...Ss leading by doing instead of telling.
A3: Re-branding traditional classroom rules---not a list of things they CAN'T do, but rather a list of things they SHOULD do!
Hopefully, as more Ts give up control, it's less intimidating for Ss. School-wide student-led https://t.co/QsJSWIIKiO
A2: Ss are unsure of how to use their responsibilities & power in a Student-Led classroom --- aren't used to a T giving up control!
This is really hard for some Ss, too. They come to me already hardwired for the "thou shalt nots"
Goal setting is SO important to keep expectations in perspective.
Q4: How do you build relationships in a student-led classroom? How does this help management? https://t.co/TENJIcdHk7
I love this for growth mindset in every community! Well stated! https://t.co/flf9thAhiJ
A3: Re-branding traditional classroom rules---not a list of things they CAN'T do, but rather a list of things they SHOULD do!
We create one whole-class goal every day during REARJMCL and we progress monitor personal goals every Fri! https://t.co/OJK06hP51S
Goal setting is SO important to keep expectations in perspective.
A4: Trust in Ss, intercede when needed, motivate, encourage when failure is detected. Basically... be there and be on point always.
A4: One that comes to mind is the beginning of the day and end of the day; because Ss know what to do; I have time to connect.
A3: switching to a Student led classroom this year has been the best decision of my teaching career!
stretch students to expect more from themselves; when they reach one goal--asses and set a new one
A4 - Relationships are built on a foundation of respect. We level the playing field with our "Marble Theory" Classroom Meeting.
I concur. The example must be set in a compassionate and productive manner.
A4 when Ss know that you care about them on a personal level, it opens up a whole new level of openness.
A4: It all starts with communication and treating all students as equals. Maintaining a positive environment.
A4: Daily collaborative experiences with random partners (I pull sticks!) allows everyone to work together & build relationships.
A4-Give time for team building-partner building-so that Ss can flexibly work together in an array of groups-Opportunities 2 debrief
A2 FreeTech4Teachers, GoogleGooru, Edutopia,
A4 students are constantly working with partners and in small groups- they form so many more relationships and build trust!
That's SO awesome to hear! Have you blogged about it or can we learn more somehow?!?!? :) https://t.co/M8WUsdNKhO
A3: switching to a Student led classroom this year has been the best decision of my teaching career!
A7 - there are some great free courses on - This summer I am going to do a whole bunch of them!
A4 Listening to STs and using their convos to drive implementation of changes needed to produce a productive classroom.
A4 Listening to STs and using their convos to drive implementation of changes needed to produce a productive classroom.
A7 I am currently learning about and have been building my own. This is my new obsession! I love it!
A4 Student led is all about building relationship building --communication--w/o it can't build trust or respect
A4: Meaningful relationships rooted in mutual respect & trust-- take time to listen to and share stories with Ss; get to know them!
Just did my first 2 weeks ago. Was amazing!! https://t.co/pp3lmv1rqK
A7 I am currently learning about and have been building my own. This is my new obsession! I love it!
Have you tried student-led conferences? They are the best at driving change and productive results.
Kathy jumping in late from Houston
We are trying student-led edcamp next month!
Want to try a student-led EdCamp ==> share and teach your passions and skills to others
WOW! Let me know how they go! AWESOME!
This was the scariest, and most exhilarating thing I'd done this year. Ss loved leading their conferences!
A5 all Ss have learning partners in which they collaborate with. Every Ss has a job to make our community (room) successful
Any info you could share about your conferences? It is awesome you had them!
A5 You give students strategic moments to take over class; put them in charge. Less behavior problems result
YES! I blogged about the experience. It led me to blending and flipping!
A5: Teach S leaders to lead. Ss have problem with peers? Don't tell how to solve but counsel w/ ideas for resolution.
A5 - Students look out for each other & for the well-being of the classroom. They re-direct each other & promote the class goals.
I'd love to read that blog post...link?
Share your blog PLEASE! I would love to read about it!
Have you tried match. com? I printed out pics of famous pairs - Buzz & Woody Pass out & Ss find their match https://t.co/EZ9hqeyrgz
A4: Daily collaborative experiences with random partners (I pull sticks!) allows everyone to work together & build relationships.
I realized that my parents needed support. Therefore blending and flipping became a must for me. https://t.co/tTkjemqI0M
Any info you could share about your conferences? It is awesome you had them!
A5: Know who the true leaders are, let them model it, and then give others a chance to lead as well.
Hah - that's awesome! Great way to partner kids up!!! :)
A4 relationship is key 2 successful clsrm. Ss must know u r on their side. Then they won't let u down https://t.co/J3UDsbIrWy
Q4: How do you build relationships in a student-led classroom? How does this help management? https://t.co/TENJIcdHk7
A5 Everyone has a talent; plan lessons that requires different skill sets that allow Ss talents to shine
Q6: How do you hold students accountable in a student-led classroom? Incentives? Consequences? https://t.co/Ss6cyA0lxZ
A5-W/my baby steps in breakoutedu I've been AMAZED how the Ss led debriefings completely transformed behave w/little 2 no T interve
Completely agree. Relationships are the key!
don't just teach S leader to lead --why not teach all Ss to lead? You never know what S strength you may uncover
A6 I post their learning targets and agenda on a Google doc. conference about the work their working on. I become a project manager
A6: Lots of student led reflection if they have input on rules, they should take part in when something goes wrong.
A6 Accountable talk keeps it real for all involved. As we said earlier, the community has to be formed.
A6 Ss tracking class goals on a daily survey. We analyze data every Friday.
Love using Google Classroom as part of management. https://t.co/TAS9D6mPTP
A6 I post their learning targets and agenda on a Google doc. conference about the work their working on. I become a project manager
A6: Reflection and class meetings. We also use brownie points and bucket-filling.
10 minutes until ! Our topic is the ULTIMATE teacher.
A6 Ss should hold themselves accountable first;instill selfrespect;have Ss help create rubrics/expectations 4 better accountability
I ❤️this! Many years ago, I actually held mini-conferences with St leaders!
I reflect every single day. It soothes my soul. So I know it's a must in the classroom as well.
Individual conversations & whole-group Classroom Mtgs can help Ss internalize behavior & stay accountable! https://t.co/dNM4wz3X7p
A6 Ss should hold themselves accountable first;instill selfrespect;have Ss help create rubrics/expectations 4 better accountability
A6: Admittedly, solving this with 7th graders is tough. We want S leaders to care and invest but HOW!?! Peer pressure is tough.
EXACTLY!! Otherwise we are NOT serving our STs and helping them grow! https://t.co/qSC9xVrMmq
I reflect every single day. It soothes my soul. So I know it's a must in the classroom as well.
A6 putting them in charge is in itself accountability. Acknowledge their risk-taking; publicize it.
On reflecting, I'm working to get my Ss from "How did we do" to "What did we to"
That is great! I love the inclusion of google forms. Love it!
teaching it should be spiraled & systemic; 1 year building on another so when Ss get to 7th its routine not new
also use a formula to track average scores they give themselves.
We're always looking for people to moderate ! Please consider signing up: https://t.co/yJZcW6V8iI (Amazing job tonight!)
A7: you have to get used to the extra noise and movement..they are excited about their learning and what they are doing!
A7-Productivity & collaboration requires conversation! Learning can be messy-sometimes not pretty!
A7 Like whitewater rafting; it's an experience; never the same; Ts guide the Ss in a direction;Ss do the work towards a common goal
Thanks. You're the real rockstar for setting up and running !
A7 letting go of what was. Ss talking and collaborating. I don't leave sub plans but Ss plans on Google classroom when I'm out.
Thank you . Great topic tonight!
