Hey #earlylang - I teach the older ones this year, all 5-8, no K-4 for me this time! Spanish. In Kentucky. Solo kid duty tonight but I'm gonna try to participate. :)
A1 I was JUST talking to my principal about this yesterday! Every year I set personal & professional goals, but I slacked this summer. What is my goal this year? #earlylang
A1: A guiding principle of the Responsible Classroom approach is “how we teach is as important as what we teach “ so one of my goals is to modify teacher language to support students in an effective environment for #earlylang learning. 🎯
I'm in the same boat. I was so upset that they changed my schedule (back in a 6 day rotation from every other day) that I haven't thought about my goals this year. :-( #earlylang
A1: after 3 yrs of MS, I’m teaching k-5 now. My goal is to figure out what is developmentally appropriate for these kids. Learning new things every day #earlylang
A1: One of my teacher goals for the year is to make objects clearer to students and families. Another goal is to increase student self-assessment. I see these both as areas for growth. #EarlyLang

Our Q1 is What goals have you set for yourself as a teacher? Be sure to add the hashtag #earlylang to your answer, and A1, A2 ,etc to correspond to the questions :)
A1: In my process, I sit down at the end of the year, and let the year inform next year's goals. This year--I'm reading @doriecp book on intercultural competency and looking to integrate in into my existing units. #earlylang
A1: I set the goal of finding and using more #authres with my Ss. We have a new curriculum for grades 3-5 and it’s been fun but challenging. And a lot of work! #earlylang
A1 This is such a great question. I think so much about MY goals for THEM, and MY goals for ME are mostly outside the profession. What about inside? #earlylang
Our benchmark for 5th is NH and I've been telling myself that it's ok to not make it because we just don't have the time to get there. NM is OK! They will be sooo ready for middle school. #EarlyLang

A1: this is the student version of the adult goal setting sheet I made for my department (in the outline of our school!) - basement - what is your foundation, window- what do you want to see looking in? Walls- what are your supports? Opposite walls- what blocks you? #earlylang
Parent education! I made this a goal of mine too this year. They need to know our WHY since language pedagogy has changed so much since they were kids! #earlylang
A2: Brainstorming examples of our “hopes and dreams,” during the first few days of school, involves students in the goal setting process. We inspire each other to hope and dream! #earlylang
A2: at the onset of each unit, I share my goals for my Ss via Can Do Statements I created for that unit. I also leave blanks so Ss can fill in their own goals. We revisit these Can Dos at the end of the unit and the Ss re-self-assess and note growth #earlylang
Maybe it is how to give the Ss the best experience w lang possible so they love and want to explore more on their own or to give them more ways to engage w lang on their own #earlylang

@MundodePepita, @Sra_Kennedy, @rrrrrrrrrrrrosa
A2: my primary focus with student goals is community-what do you need to do to contribute positively (take care of) to our learning community? *pay attention *be kind *be safe #earlylang

I don't know that K and 1 know enough about language learning/acquisition to set effective goals. Maybe just a simple "What do you want to do with the Spanish you learn?" draw a picture at home type assignment. #earlylang
This is actually what helped me get over my funk. 5th grade had to miss Spanish last week for an assembly and several of them were so bummed. It made me realize that I am making a difference. #EarlyLang

A2: we do PUEDOS a la @SraSpanglish even with our littlest pipsqueaks. They sign off with stickers and LOVE it. The task helps to generate conversations about YET. Maybe you don’t know it YET but how will you get there? #earlylang
A2: 3rd graders have been learning about proficiency levels. Next, I plan to use @Seesaw as a way for students to record their proficiency related "Hopes and Dreams" @responsiveclass style. #EarlyLang
Such a good question - I have struggled with this but my ever-changing philosophy of education has landed me here: I teach Spanish, but I teach humans before I teach Spanish so anything that puts mental health and SEL at the core & requires some English, I allow for. #earlylang
I am learning for myself it is less about what we teach and more about how we inspire. Some Ss will always want more and others won’t want any...I don’t teach Spanish as much as I teach excitement and interest (or I hope) #earlylang

Because you're a TEACHER! :)))))))) Regardless of discipline, our teacher hearts just want our kiddos to be infected with the joy of learning something new :) #earlylang

hey #EarlyLang chat participants! Are you a member of NNELL? We're a fun bunch of early language educators. And we've got a wealth of resources to share with you! https://t.co/OzlniyUHAV
I love the idea of goals for kindness and how to behave in a Lang class rather than lang goals. I’d like the to write “I can listen to directions w/o say “hug” “what” “wait!” A million times!” 😂 #earlylang
A3: concrete, kid friendly, and simple. Plus for language goals-they need a purpose. Why are we doing a pet theme? So we can share about them w classmates & learn more about each other's families (for ex) #earlylang
With a blogger's idea of a dashboard I finally found a way that fits my planning style to show Can Do statements. So we have our Can Do statements, all context and no language "skills" explicit in the statement. "I can name 3 things I can see in Bolivia." #earlylang
A3 I mentioned earlier that when I worked on goals w 4th & 5th we discussed proficiency levels by comparing process of a baby learning to speak (words, phrases, sentences) #earlylang
A3: I use a graphic of Chichen Itza. I got jealous that our Chinese students climbed the Great Wall and Japanese climbed Mt. Fuji so I made one for Spanish class. #earlylanghttps://t.co/WnkgcUMqdu
Jumping in super late to #earlylang, but I’m here! Hi everyone. I’m Dorie, Spanish teacher grades 1-5 in CT. I’ll take a min to get caught up and then jump in ☺️
So basically you make a bunch of really simple tasks that pull in stuff you have done/will do, have kids prove they can do 10 to each other, get signatures when they prove it #earlylang#langchat (examples here: https://t.co/EsQsLQ9Wfq)
A3 I really try to give authentic goals that are relevant & meaningful for kids, the 'why's' behind our themes & activities #earlylang I find it can sometimes be challenging to word them well!

A3: tbh I do my goals (I can statements) in English, and in super kid friendly language. I want them to go home and say I can do this! I do want them to be able to say what they can do, as well as do it. #earlylang
I used to do something similar with high five hands but my kiddos kept hitting them all and it drove me crazy so I took it down. Maybe if I modified it they would take it more seriously. #EarlyLang
I think this is one of those things that you might start small & work towards. Our district requires that we do them (& post them), but if that's not the case, you might just pick one or two that you work on globally #justathought#earlylang
I saw that and loved it...wish I had a room! Think I could make 10 copies and hang it in each room? Or maybe just in the middle of the hall?? #earlylang
I usually do thumbs up for “I can do it on my own” side ways thumbs for “I can do it with help” and thumbs down for “not yet”. But I don’t like the idea of Ss giving themselves a thumbs down. So I switched to 1,2,3 but I don’t love it. #earlylang
I was thinking the same! I shared it with our other specials teachers-we are going to talk as a team as how we can integrate it (or maybe in the end not!) #earlylang
I plan to start with video recording. Seesaw is new for me and I look forward to the kiddos teaching me as we go!!! They are all such great techies. #EarlyLang

A3: Responsive Classroom (😊) connects hopes and dreams to rules to underscore how learning goals are affected without first building a positive learning community. #Earlylang
A4: In my district, we are asked to do this formally throughout the year. Informally, I reflect at the end of every day and ask myself “how did that go?” #earlylang
I find great power in framing things as, “who is ready for a challenge!?” - I don’t know if it is because I teach all boys but they embrace it (rather than roll their eyes at extra work) and are more reflective when we talk about challenging oneself. #earlylang
you and me both!!! Which can end up in me getting overwhelmed, so I've learned I've got to pick & choose or I'll go crazy... hence the goal 'Breathe' :) #earlylang
@seesaw is a great tool for the Ss and for sharing w parents. You can also make blog posts and tweet them out so our Ss can comment on them! #earlylang

I think you are totally right- high expectations galvanize kiddos & pique their interest more often then low/ mediocre ones. I'm fascinated you teach all boys-I had one class of all boys several years ago...what an adventure! #earlylang
A4 same as @kellycondon. Our district asks us to have students formally reflect on can do statements twice a year. But I try to do it daily since it forces me to make sure my daily activities are line with my desired outcomes (can dos). #earlylang
A1: My goals as a teacher are ultimately to create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable putting themselves out there in their early Spanish endeavors #earlylang
A4 with older elem students I used to have quick 1:1 interviews to check-in on their progress. In English. I liked doing this periodically because you can connect with them differently #earlylang
A4: I use Si Se Puede bubbles that are color coded by proficiency level. Ss can keep track of progress. When they get 10 we celebrate, reflect, and they get a prize. #earlylang
I saw this one too and started using this as an effort self-assessment. I love it! It would be super cool to use for a student goal each class session. I hope you Tweet about it if you give it a try.#EarlyLang
Loveeeee this. Admire & adopt is so much cuter than my first thought- stealing this! But I travel from room to room and it is so hard to be consistent with these sorts of things. I also leave everything everywhere. #earlylang

It’s a debate we have in our district. I write mine in English on the board but read them in Spanish. If I agent taught it to them yet, how will they understand the goal if I write it in Spanish? And sometimes they’re too abstract to gesture/use photos to explain/etc #earlylang

A2: To involve students, during our first meeting, I have students write down their goals, and I type them up in a Google doc. I base a lot of lessons off of what they want to achieve and at the end of the year we revisit the goals document from the first day! #earlylang
A4: The pre-unit self-assessment Can Do's appear on page 1 of each unit booklet. Same Can-Do's appear as a final self-assessment on the last page of the unit booklet. They're in plain sight every single day as the Ss interact with their learning materials. #earlylang
Our district lead talks about posting them in English but reading them in TL which I think works for upper grades but for little ones I go all English. #earlylang

What is the why behind goal setting? It’s much deeper than just teaching the language - it’s about developing the whole student. If I did it in Spanish, I don’t think we would get even half of the honesty, vulnerability, and reflection we do. #earlylang

@Sra_Kennedy, @lucijgalvan, @la_sra_hinson
I also put the I cans for the unit at the top. It has really helped participation and is way easier for me than stamp pages (which is what I used to do.) #EarlyLang
I write them in the board daily. But sometimes it takes a while before I change it. We keep working towards that goal until all students can demonstrate it at some level (even though some may need support to do it) #earlylang

@kellycondon, @Sra_Kennedy, @lucijgalvan, @la_sra_hinson
I have a bellringer activity, EQs, and I cans on a ppt slide for each grade level that I project. I go over them more in depth at the beginning of a unit and then just a few seconds in subsequet lessons. #earlylang

A4 In the big picture, we keep a poster (I don't have my own classroom) of proficiency descriptions and point out, what if we add phrases, then we're moving from here to here. #earlylang
A5: Assessments can and should assess the achievement of student goals. They should measure what we are trying to achieve (which is proficiency) #earlylang
I think Talia is on to something. My kiddos don't seem interested in hitting more than 1 color. Probably the colors are not enticing as your cool high fives were. #EarlyLang
In reply to
@WescottSpanish, @Sra_Kennedy, @doriecp
A5 I handed my middle-grades kids a reading last week & asked them to mark in any color what they understood. They were extremely impressed with themselves, which is way better than me being impressed with them. #earlylang
So I need something they want to hit but not want to hit too much. The goldilocks of self assessment high fives. Less colorful and not actually hands might be just the thing. ;-) #earlylang

A3: Students set their goals in simple, easy to understand language. "I want to be able to have a conversation with my mom in her native language" is my favorite example from this year! #earlylang
I post them at the start of each unit and then keep them up on the wall throughout. We read through them at the start of each class. It does not need to take long but sometimes I like to integrate self-assessment and then it takes a few minutes. #EarlyLang

@kellycondon, @doriecp, @Sra_Kennedy, @la_sra_hinson
TA consider a way for students to self reflect. But first, think about how to be explicit with what the goals are. As simple as: I spoke in Spanish. I was a helpful community member. #earlylang
Not a reflection, but I’m glad we’re all back! It’s good to see familiar and new faces. How excited I am to see all of you reminds me how exciting the beginning of the school year is for my Ss #earlylang
