Good evening, everyone! Tricia Ebner, gifted consultant & coordinator, NE Ohio, tweeting from NW Ohio tonight, and looking forward to some Graeter's Black Raspberry Chocolate sometime soon! #ohedchat
Happy Summer #OHedchat! Char, Dir. of Curriculum - Bay Village - co moderating tonight's chat and wishing I had a Buckeye Sundae from Dairy Dock up in Marblehead!!!
A1: Ability to work in a team,
Problem-solving skills, Strong work ethic, Communication skills, Initiative, Flexibility,Interpersonal skills,Detail-oriented, Organizational ability,Friendly, Risk-taker, Tactfulness, and Creativity.#ohedchat
A1: When I think about career readiness, I think of ability to be a flexible thinker, work with a team, communicate ideas, open to feedback, persistence, positivity - the things I would want in a colleague. #ohedchat
A1. Collaboration, soft skills, ability to manage time wisely...instilling passion and work-ethic are also huge when it comes to being career ready. Need to be ready to jump in a do the work! #ohedchat
For me, writing emails or text messages in complete sentences or in bulleted lists, the ability to take and offer constructive criticism, for starters. #ohedchat
A1: Technology skills and people skills! Our Ss are not as adept at using technology efficiently like we would like to think. They need to learn work flows and how to deal with a variety of people #ohedchat
Thanks! It's so hard for teens to support each other this way. They all want to say "everything you do is great," which helps no one get better. #ohedchat!
A1 Mindset: Internally motivated to display the effort to get job tasks done in an efficient manner that meets high standards. Skills: demonstrated ability to work individually and with a team, problem-solving, and being able to effectively manage several tasks at once #ohedchat
A1: Gotta steal from @LakotaSuper love the use of the three E’s Employed • Enrolled • Enlisted the important skills transcend all three: communication-collaboration-critical thinking-problem solving-innovation. #ohedchat
How do you use your STEM activities to help them build work flow skills? I think this would be a great way to weave in that career readiness piece. #OHedchat
Yes! They know social aspects of tech, but not how to use it for work. Many of mine still disbelieve the permanence of their digital footprint, too. #ohedchat
I like that you used effectively when you talked about managing several tasks at once - so many times we hear people talk about being multi-taskers, but the career skill needs the EFFECTIVELY component #OHedchat
That is such a lifelong skill - finding that "lost time" can often allow you to accomplish more than you thought - and still have that personal time. #OHedchat
A2 as a counselor, I think it is important for me to get Ss exposed to OMJ and complete activities like career clusters and the beginning levels...#ohedchat
A2: Directly discussing the important of solutions-oriented thinking, good work habits, positive, growth mindsets can be important. Modeling is good, but we need to make the connections clear for them. #ohedchat
A2 At my school, we choose a career path and interview a professional as part of my dual enrollment class. Am adding some Ohio Means Jobs stuff next fall, for better career fit, plus job shadowing. #ohedchat
I try making short "how to" videos and leave them as resources in an assignment, and then allowing them to resubmit if they forget something (like an image citation on their blog post.) Baby steps! #ohedchat
A2. Bringing in guests to the classroom, provide opportunities For exposure to these careers, support and info, all while teaching the necessary skills. #ohedchat
A2: make it meaningful. Let them see their potential from early on. Connect it to careers and jobs. No more “Will I use this when I grow up?” #ohedchat
I use an interest inventory to gain the Ss info. Then, we walk through cluster areas and explain what types of careers fall in each category. This gives Ss a better understanding and may connect them to something they haven't thought #ohedchat
A2 All classrooms should incorporate a job readiness theme. This includes exposing our students to learning experiences that will require them to adjust communication given the situation, lead others to accomplish tasks, and create solutions to new problems #ohedchat
A2: work within the current guidelines. Unfortunately, they seem to not be as clear from the state but working with other districts to make it work to fit your own program.
#ohedchat
A2: I like the career finder tools - I think helping Ss to match their own personality style/passions and strengths to career paths - then making connections to the content skills their are learning - helps Ss to see themselves in a future career #ohedchat
A2: Introduce career and Career Tech Ed at younger ages. My school is comprehensive with CT programs built-in so our Ss don't travel to a career center. They've begun brining jr high students to the HS to tour the CT programs and spark early interest in these paths #ohedchat
It was a sweet arc of assignments. They followed the design model to ID & solve a problem via interview, research, innovative solution, and then presented their solutions to area professionals. But not all job interviews were a good fit. #ohedchat
Agree, Tricia. The incorporation of solutions-oriented thinking is imperative. We must assist our students with navigating process thinking: identifying issues, determining the source of the problems, and developing next steps to solve them @TebnerEbner#ohedchat
A2: practicality and technology. Connect Ss to what is in their community while using the resources on OMJ to solidify the experience #Schlechty#ohedchat
A2: Is anyone looking at the EnvisionIt curriculum that has been developed by OSU? We are looking at how to weave it into existing HS classes . There is also a FInancial Literacy Module. #ohedchathttps://t.co/32AUIcYXI4
What are you going to do to tweak that for next year? Did you use a rubric for the area professionals to help them see what to focus on when providing feedback to Ss? #OHedchat
This was for Composition 1, and I wish we'd had their resumes ready from our CBFM class, but not all had taken it junior yr. We did design business cards, though. #ohedchat
A2. Working with Ss to explain what employer's and educators are looking for when seeking employment. Teaching these skills with a growth mindset to Ss as they explore jobs and occupations. #ohedchat
A3: Practicing some of these skills and habits of mind with our Ss, from kindergarten on, helps make them part of life. Consistent exposure, expectation, and practice. #ohedchat
I want Ss to job shadow, not just interview. Also, last yr we used Holland code to determine job fit, and it didn't work perfectly, so not all were invested. I'm hoping for Ss to connect with the community more. #ohedchat
A3 we need to do a better job in earlier grades exposing Ss to careers and readiness skills. Can't just ignore and let high schools handle it. Soft skills start early! #ohedchat
A3. Beginning at the elementary ages, teaching tech skills, enforcing and modeling soft skills (little things like greeting each student, shaking hands, eye contact), building on this each year! #ohedchat
A3: stop using career readiness as a buzzword in our vision and mission statements because it sounds good. Actually live it by fostering and supporting the trades. Bring back shop and home eco. Give kids real world skills they demand. Track kids that enter the workforce
#ohedchat
A3 I find it easier with older kiddos who don't have EOC in April, but I try for collaborative problem solving and soft skills with my 10th graders, too. #ohedchat!
A3: Teach career-ready skills from an early age. Whether its tech literacy in elementary, career exploration in middle school, or resume writing and interview skills in high school, the students need be continually educated on these skills #ohedchat
#ohedchat A3: like @sadkinsump mentioned, keep S's voices heard through informal surveys, keep involved with the community and what employers need, work within the parameters of the state guidelines and create positive, motivational opps in the classroom
A3: We need to be intentional about opportunities to practice the CCR skills -so often we think Ss can infer those behaviors and skills - even Kindergarten Ss are open to feedback on efficient use of time, collaboration, how to communicate with each other etc. #ohedchat
A3: mentorships, field trips (even if it’s to a local business or maybe digital with Skype or FaceTime), bringing in professionals for “career days”... thoughts at a primary level at least #ohedchat
By modeling for students #grit & #perseverance. Trying & failing is so much better than Quitting and Not Trying @ all. Problem Solving, Collaboration. #ohedchat
I totally agree, but I'll have 60 kiddos to help find career matches for, and that seems daunting. We're trying for a fall job fair to help them, too, but it might come too late in the yr for my kiddo's 1st paper deadline. #ohedchat
Some learn best from short videos. Others want me to sit down next to them the first couple times. Whatever works, and I think allowing revision till it's correct is key. #ohedchat
A3. We have an Edcouncil which works with employer's and teacher's to develop what types of skills are necessary to bring into the classroom for Ss. Having Ss who are graduating mock interviews by professionals in the school. #ohedchat
Agree with the real world skills - and the more authentic opportunities they have to apply skills, with feedback, the better. These are skills that can not be memorized by studying flashcards. #OHedchat
You're right, Shawn. Next year, we are sharpening our focus to guide students' peer-to-peer & peer-to-adult communication, creating more experiences for them to demonstrate their own leadership, & establishing time for our Ss to reflect on their own growth @sadkinsump#ohedchat
We had help from our local @WeAreLRNG last year. Ss earned badges and the liaison helped matched groups of kiddos to professionals. Job shadow seems more 1 on 1, though. #ohedchat
Modeling growth mindset is important too! It is good for Ss to hear adults "think aloud" when faced with an opportunity to learn from a challenge or new experience. #OHedchat
By the end of the school year, bad habits can creep in. Everyone can’t wait “to be done!” Hitting the “reset” button for me is reflecting on the school year, perception is everything, changing my attitude which changes my mindset! #ohedchat
Mine was--I shadowed another high school's band director, and it was just me. Very cool experience. Also helped steer me toward my ELA focus. #stilllovemusic#ohedchat
