A1. Visuals - perfect entry point for new skill. Levels the playing field. How do we READ this visual?
Then assess the talk and understanding after practice and BEFORE using print.
No surprises - know the task & purpose when add print.

A1 Visuals are so important, I like to encourage students and teachers how to take visual notes. Ss can also have very in depth conversations about photographs that involve inferring and a different type of reading. #G2Great#BowTieBoys@spencerhill99@Joe_OSuch
A1 Images can be incorporated across the day in many forms including charts, graphics, color, drawing, photographs, video, symbols, sketchnotes or thoughtful doodles. There is no limit to the possibilities. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A1: Using images really enforces information into students' minds. I find this really helps me remember things, when I connect information to an image. #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great

Holy smokes that was speedy. I love introductions with visuals to really hit one of our strong senses. Also, did you have that prepared cause that was incredibly fast! #g2great#bowtieboys
A1: Using images really enforces information into students' minds. I find this really helps me remember things, when I connect information to an image. #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
A1: Visuals that Ss identify with are very powerful in captivating them. If images that contain certain trends in S society are present in a lesson, Ss are bound to be engaged. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A1: Images can provide connections to the outside world. Not only showing images, but encouraging students to make their own. This could include making pictures, videos, or short films. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A1 For me, one of the best ways that it can be and is incorporated is when learning vocab, as it gives me something to connect the words to #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
Visual images evoke stronger emotions than words sometimes - using images to create mental images for students is a wonderful way to go #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A1: Using images really enforces information into students' minds. I find this really helps me remember things, when I connect information to an image. #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
A1: Coming from a huge visual learner, visuals help me A LOT. It helps me remember not only the facts, but the majority of the lesson as well #G2Great#BowTieBoys

A1: Everything is in picture form these days! Ads on tv and internet, memes, infographics, etc. I MUST use them in lessons...daily! That's how we know the world now. #g2great
That's a fantastic point! Giving students the opportunity to discuss a visual can often lead to significantly more in-depth conversations after noticing small details in the picture #g2great#bowtieboys

@johnnydowney, @Spencerhill99, @Joe_OSuch
A1: Visuals are always eye catching and make you remember the information longer, in my opinion it is one of the best way to create effective learning. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
I love it in class when we look at a picture and study that in depth and write about it as images are a great way to communicate thoughts #g2great#bowtieboys
A1 I'm a huge proponent of #sketchnotes as a visual form of notetaking and processing-also helps Ss tune into visual world and turn verbal info to visual #G2Great
A1 John Medina’s Brain Rule # 10: Vision Trumps All Other Senses. There’s substantial research to support images/visuals but it’s not always applied in our teaching. It’s so relevant! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
I love this idea. It teaches students to notice and allows us the freedom to interpret things in different ways. Having the freedom to explore in your own way is so empowering #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A1: In my current 1st gr AT placement, we use visuals from picture books for story sequencing, and then later to write BME summaries of the story. #g2great#litbankstreet
I love that you emphasized that visuals can be very personal to each learner Nihar. Yes, that’s true that when WE connect the to the visuals it has a great impact. This is also true when learner CREATE their own visuals #G2Great
A1: Visuals that Ss identify with are very powerful in captivating them. If images that contain certain trends in S society are present in a lesson, Ss are bound to be engaged. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A1: Visual aids help Ss with understanding the material. It gives them an image to imagine when they are studying or retaining the curriculum #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A1: I love using visual prompts for quick write opportunities. Unique images to generate curiosity and then tell the story. Sometimes words are less accessible. Images tell so many stories. #G2Great
Something new that was introduced to me this year from my English teacher is picture notes. Instead of writing bullet points, which works for many people as well, it again helps to connect information to an image. #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
Wow. Generally would love to have this in my classroom. As a visual learner, I often connect with images more than just straight copying notes. Definitely going to try this in my classes!! #g2great#BowTieBoys
A1- Images can also be a great way for young students to understand and follow routines- in Pre-K we use step by step images to show how we wash our hands or put our coat away. #litbankstreet#G2great
A1:Make the lesson involve the students physically-escape rooms, scavenger hunts.Have your students teach themselves the lesson by finding pieces to put it together!#g2great
A1 I love Tanny McGregor’s new book Ink & Ideas on Sketchnoting. There is so much application for both teachers and students and she provides the WHY WHAT and HOW to support these shifts. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
It’s like the perfect merger because one nudges the other. The visuals promote discussion and then our discussion enhances the value of the visuals. #G2Great
A1 We quick write to a lot of visual info: art, videos, photos, infographics. Analyzing, interpreting, interacting with builds visual literacy. #g2great#QuickWrites
A1 Although visuals are great tools to draw or retain student attention, sometimes they are used as crutches. Visuals should be purposeful and could never truly supplant an energetic teacher #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
visuals always help even to this day when I don't understand a reading I can always depend on the visual to guide my thinking #HairBowGirls#BowTieBoys#g2great
A1: Visual images spark a discussion in students. There is always a different backstory in everyone's eyes. Kids love colors and exciting images. In my opinion, they are more effective than a simple lecture. #g2great#bowtieboys
A1: Visuals come in many forms. From books in book talks to student created videos and poems. Today we used an idea from @amylvpoemfarm POEMS ARE TEACHERS. Students looked through their camera roll or snapped a pic and we write a poem based on the image. #G2Great
A2. Literature = songs, poetry & stories. ALL. Small bits can engage Ss and set stage for deeper learning about cultural events & time periods. Audio & visual components both play a part in deepening our knowledge.
#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2great
What is awesome is that I have lots of classes that use pictures to go through the steps of our work, and it helps so much! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A1- Images can also be a great way for young students to understand and follow routines- in Pre-K we use step by step images to show how we wash our hands or put our coat away. #litbankstreet#G2great
Wise words that I whole heartedly agree with. I think another text that doesnt get enough credit are songs, which delve into deep poetic meaning with the extra level of analysis with music. #g2great#bowtieboys
And it’s actually our uniqueness that adds to collective learning. Wouldn’t it be boring if we all saw the world in the same way? (hello friend) #G2Great
A1. Images have infinite questions and answers for students. Taking advantage of images can make a positive impact in the classroom. Students can find information in graphs, photos, paintings, ext.
#g2great#BowTieBoys
YES!! I was just talking to an English teacher at my school who has creepy posters on his wall just for the sake of quick writes. Ss would create a story for the character represented. #g2great#bowtieboys
A2 I would play soft instrumental music as I read compelling text & taught kids to do the same. They had to think about the message and explain why they chose that song. Great for comprehension #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A2 I think music lyrics are the best way to begin with any kind of deep comprehension activity. Lyrics are easier to “read” so students have more brain power leftover to do the heavy lifting w/ comprehension. #G2Great#BowTieBoys@dawsonunger@KellenPluntke
A2 Despite its negative connotation, rap music possesses some of the largest amount of literary qualities. With so many different words come so many things to unpack. #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A2: I love music and have tried at times to work it in. Never as successfully as I would hope but learning on how to make it better. #G2Great As a Notice and Note practice tool music lyrics are great.
Absolutely Brent, you know there is so much great dialogue that happens as visuals are formed too. Creating them cultivates understanding in very interesting ways. #G2Great
A2: I feel like music can really relate to students that what they learn can really be relevant to the real world which can truly make me more interested in the class #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#g2great
In reply to
@DrMaryHoward, @dawsonunger, @KellenPluntke, @franmcveigh, @hayhurst3, @brennanamy
Love this! Discussion of the quick responses could be a great way for students to hear about other's ideas and thoughts if you don't practice this already! #g2great#BowTieBoys
A2: Music invokes passionate and heartfelt emotions in students; imagery and metaphors that are portrayed in songs are similar to poems, but are catchy allowing students to remember the ideas presented. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A2- We play different music sometimes during independent book time. My students are not get reading so music can be a good tool to set different tones for them while they look at the books. #litbankstreet#G2great
A2 Even as one who doesn't listen to music often, the deep poetic complexities mixed with the deeper analysis of musical elements makes music something that should be right next to poetry in any English class. #g2great#bowtieboys
A2: Honestly, not a day goes by when I don't have my AirPods I my ears. I love music and incorporating music into lessons not only gets Ss more engaged, it can give them a little fun too #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A2: I love using music! This year my fifth grade class started our unit on the American Revolution by analyzing The Beatles’ song Revolution, and I often employ student-selected song lyrics as poetic texts #g2great#bowtieboys#hairbowgirls#litbankstreet
I’ve always remembered things better when listening to music! One of my teachers always has soothing music on as we work together and https://t.co/G6IsRmEwfJ creates a calm environment, making the students feel welcomed! #g2great

I couldnt agree more Fran, there is so much more than we explore in the conventional classroom out there for us to dive into! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A2. Literature = songs, poetry & stories. ALL. Small bits can engage Ss and set stage for deeper learning about cultural events & time periods. Audio & visual components both play a part in deepening our knowledge.
#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2great
A2: Fellow #HairBowGirl@LeilaMohajer and I have the same English T, and he plays music every day, at every moment. This soothes us as we work, and in turn, we get more done. #g2great#BowTieBoys
Everyone has a song that they connect to. Allowing students to explore pieces of literature that they have a previous emotional connection with can make it easier for students to buy in. #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls

@johnnydowney, @dawsonunger, @KellenPluntke
A2: From Vedika, another Hairbow Girl, , "I would say that in Mr. A's classroom we utilize music by analyzing the lyrics and trying to understand literary concepts." #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
A1: With my sophomores, Ss engage in inquiry-based learning and are constantly searching for images as supplementary materials to inform their EQs and support what is learned from anchor texts. With APLang we rhetorically analyze images such as political cartoons #g2great
A2: Nothing connects with me more than music. Whenever I have the opportunity, I will create any of my projects by writing songs. I find that I am better at making connections when I am presented with a set of lyrics. This form of Lit can open doors for Ss. #g2great#BowTieBoys
great point about students create their own visuals- I have students create the visuals 4 vowel teams chart and vocab charts and UPS excitement 10fold! #g2great
I love that you emphasized that visuals can be very personal to each learner Nihar.
A2: My fellow #bowtieboy, @NKandarpa and I have an amazing english teacher who is always playing calm, soothing music. It helps us to focus, and get work done. #g2great
A2: I play Miles Davis whenever we do Stand-Up, Hand-Up, Pair-Up...I like to keep it quiet while we are reading deeply, but songs are also great for analyzing poetry and theme. #g2great
A2: I have not been in a class where we have really listened to music as a form of literature but I think it would be a great way to engage more students #G2Great
A2: I, personally, have a lot of experience with music in the classroom. In my freshman year of English, we did song analyses nearly everyday and it greatly improved my critical thinking ability to piece music with lyrics. #g2great
A 2 We use song lyrics and raps. Often use music playing to inspire writing poems. Also Ss write poems and set them to music using bongos, guitar, drums, saxophone! #BowTieBoys#BowHairGirls#G2Great
A2 One of my favorite memories is from sixth grade when my teacher taught us about The Moldau, we listened and learned the story of the music. I use that same lesson with my second graders these many years later. #g2great
A2: Honestly, not a day goes by when I don't have my AirPods I my ears. I love music and incorporating music into lessons not only gets Ss more engaged, it can give them a little fun too #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A2: Music is definitely important, as it is such a huge factor in our day to day lives, songs can affect a students classroom experience, making them relaxed and energetic. Songs can also be great to analyze, and can make the students excited if it's a song they know. #g2great
A2 Even as one who doesn't listen to music often, the deep poetic complexities mixed with the deeper analysis of musical elements makes music something that should be right next to poetry in any English class. #g2great#bowtieboys
I know in history political cartoons are something that can speak deeply about events and culture in that time period and act a a window to the past yet also the future. #g2great#bowtieboys
Music could be a very good as a teaching technique to use. Since many students connect well with music and enjoy it, the classes might be more understandable. It can offer a way for the classroom dynamic to change and to make class more exiting #g2great#bowtieboys#hairbowgirls
A2: I believe that music can make students interested in what they're learning if it's incorporated into a lesson. Music normally gets us into a positive mood and we can focus more when we're feeling positive. #g2great#bowtieboys
great point about students create their own visuals- I have students create the visuals 4 vowel teams chart and vocab charts and UPS excitement 10fold! #g2great#litbankstreet

A1: Visuals that Ss identify with are very powerful in captivating them. If images that contain certain trends in S society are present in a lesson, Ss are bound to be engaged. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A2: A few of my teachers use music in the classroom, many think it's distracting. I find it fun and relaxing. Something about the beat of the song keeps me focused. #g2great#bowtieboys
A2 Poetry reading is a great musical merger. I had varied instrumental music and kids picked one that fit the mood of the poem. My favorite was a student who did Little Miss Muffet rap style. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A2: You 2 wrote this Q for me, yes? @dawsonunger@KellenPluntke I HAVE! We study song lyrics as poetry. When I was in college, we analyzed THE POLICE songs. (Long time ago!) #g2great
A2: Classes I have been in that implemented music into the lesson have added a whole new layer of analysis for me. It is a great way to switch it up and reach Ss that are music oriented #g2great#BowTieBoys
That sounds amazing! I did something similar in one of my classes! It really gets Ss thinking about the world around them as well; analyzing the songs they hear on the radio. #g2great
There are few mediums of art more widely beloved than music. Although everyone has different tastes, music perfectly shows how writing can touch someone's soul. It can be used as a model for S writing and an aid for easier reading comprehension #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
Music has always been a giant part of my life. It connects everyone in the world, especially high school students. Analyzing music and poetry can open various doors into teaching. It engages the students and provides positive thinking.
#g2great#BowTieBoys
Such a great point Sam. Those common connections create a thread between varied learning and use one to strengthen the other. There is so much research to support the use of music #G2Great

A2:...As well as having music in the background, it is always nice when we are given the option to listen to our own music! It creates a bond where the Ss feel trusted by the teacher. #g2great
First of all, The Beatles are one of my all time favs so I already love it. Second, This is such a fantastic way to introduce a unit! Do you use this for all units or any other times within the unit? #g2great#BowTieBoys
Thanks, Dawson.
More ways to connect = higher engagement for MORE Ss!
What song lyrics are the same?
Which are the opposite?
Which are "subversivelly appropriate?
#g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A1: With my sophomores, Ss engage in inquiry-based learning and are constantly searching for images as supplementary materials to inform their EQs and support what is learned from anchor texts. With APLang we rhetorically analyze images such as political cartoons #g2great
A2 Even as one who doesn't listen to music often, the deep poetic complexities mixed with the deeper analysis of musical elements makes music something that should be right next to poetry in any English class. #g2great#bowtieboys
I love THE POLICE, and of course we did :) music is so explorable and diverse! It is also my favorite way to learn figurative language! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
What a great idea! Music can connect students to the subject and allow them to realize deeper meanings behind popular songs, leading them to search out other representations of topics in music! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A2 (cont) We are learning and fully present in that learning music adds to the emotional impact that faciliates long term storage. These are facts good practices! #G2Great
A2 (cont'd): I'm the librarian at a fine arts middle school now; perfect for bringing literacy, music, and art together in ALL classes! I love it! #g2great
A2 Many teachers play soft music as kids work/talk but I recommend caution. For some, music competes with thinking/talking rather than supports it. One-size-fits-all views rarely work. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A2: Use music in the background I cut the silence. I use music to help kids connect to Shakespeare. Ever listen to and interpret @TheDoors “Riders on the Storm” when Macbeth and Banquo meet the Weird Sisters? The ambience and connection to lyrics is electric! #G2Great
As @JGriff_Teach recommended at #NCTE18, Kendrick Lamar's album DAMN. is a great example of how modern music can be a hotbed of literary devices. Using preexisting student interests to develop reading skills is a great idea. Loved it when I heard it and still do! #G2Great
I love music! It keeps me focused and keeps me energized. I love having the option to play music I like in the background. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A2: I love to share my fav music with the Ss - we use this for class playlists & song analyses 2 teach deep reading & critical writing skills. All done in circle discussions that ensure every S has a voice. BG music when Ss enter is always a nice touch too #g2great#BowTieBoys
A3. "Mirror Texts" - Ss have a voice in selecting text - Why is this or is this NOT a mirror? Curate better "mirrors" for class use. Build community & resources with the voice & choice of Ss.
#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2great
It’s amazing that you can do that Ryan. I’ve always been fascinated by the unique ways that everyone learns and how our strengths (and gifts) can maximize that process #G2Great
A2: Nothing connects with me more than music. Whenever I have the opportunity, I will create any of my projects by writing songs. I find that I am better at making connections when I am presented with a set of lyrics. This form of Lit can open doors for Ss. #g2great#BowTieBoys
I like your idea of bringing music into all classes and not just for Ss to relax but a way for them to retain the information #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A2: Music can also provide meaningful connections to social studies and history lessons. The Beethoven/Napoleon connection comes to mind. #g2great#litbankstreet
A2:...As well as having music in the background, it is always nice when we are given the option to listen to our own music! It creates a bond where the Ss feel trusted by the teacher. #g2great
A3 I think this begins with awareness and truly knowing our students from all sides (and not just assuming we do on the surface). Observation, conversation & being good noticers/listeners is essential. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3 This year I bought 12 LGBTQ picture books. We have gender fluid Ss, and I am sure Ss who are questioning their identities. This helps them know they are ok and normal. #BowTieBoys#G2Great@TheSammer88@ConnorGrady11
A2: I love to share my fav music with the Ss - we use this for class playlists & song analyses 2 teach deep reading & critical writing skills. All done in circle discussions that ensure every S has a voice. BG music when Ss enter is always a nice touch too #g2great#BowTieBoys
True! Music can also create really interesting new "doors on analysis" to open, such as the tone of the music not matching the tone of the lyrics for symbolic value. #g2great
A2 (cont) We are learning and fully present in that learning music adds to the emotional impact that faciliates long term storage. These are facts good practices! #G2Great
A2: I love to share my fav music with the Ss - we use this for class playlists & song analyses 2 teach deep reading & critical writing skills. All done in circle discussions that ensure every S has a voice. BG music when Ss enter is always a nice touch too #g2great#BowTieBoys
A3: Sometimes it can be hard for students to become engaged in reading, however, if they find a novel in which they can see themselves it is a great segway into more reading! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
It really gets them thinking about what revolution means before they dive into the more esoteric historical context! This carries through the rest of the year when they study freedom movements #g2great#litbankstreet
A3- For Pre -K it is so important to provide students with a lib full of books -that can always be accessed- that visually represent a diverse community of children experiences everyday childhood things. #litbankstreet#G2great
A3: I would let the students have a voice in what texts they read, which can make them feel like they have real influence in the classroom. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
A3 I think accepting the use of ebooks can extend the range of books available and may host the book a s needs. Always being proactive in asking students for what THEY want to read is also crucial! #g2great#bowtieboys
A3: Reading books is how we know what to recommend to friends and other Ss. Teachers that are always reading books not only in their own interests, but also other interests, have always recommended perfect books to me! #g2great#BowTieBoys
A3 I think one of the best ways to find mirror texts for students is to find books that enable them to walk in the feet of the pro/antagonists and then they can work up to more challenging texts from there #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
Q1: Teaching water cycle, read 3 books, diff genres w many visuals, made up a symbolic dance, experimented, drew what we learned. we took jottings, summarized, and discussed and expressed what we learned from books. TONS of visuals...science is literacy! #G2great@bankstreetlit
A3: Talking to the Ss can really open up a student to new literature. Discuss the interests and passions of the students as well as how they enjoy passing time. Recommending books to Ss show that you care and can potentially change a window to a mirror. #g2great#BowTieBoys
Choice is a critical factor of learning Sabrina. One of my favorite new books is Game Changer by Donalyn Miller and Colby Sharp. There’s so much incredible information on the role of choice! #G2Great
A3: I would let the students have a voice in what texts they read, which can make them feel like they have real influence in the classroom. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
A3: I think most people gravitate towards texts that resemble them or something that they want to be, I know I definitely do. My English teacher assigns us reading logs where we can read what ever we want and this definitely allows me to reflect #G2Great
A3 We ask. We research. We keep our eyes/ ears open. We pay attention. Social media, kids, peers, parents, websites all are great resources to find the books that will support the mirrors our kids need. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3 Yes! Classroom libraries are the heart of the room, aren't they? We have to budget for books every year because it's not only a finincial investiment it's a way to encourage literacy. There are stories for everyone. We celebrate that. #G2Great
I'm serious! Expect to receive a video of me rapping it as soon as I get home... my gold chains and I will be ready >:) #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A3: An engaging text for a student involves relate-able characters. When a student can find similarities between themselves and the characters they are reading about a more in-depth reflection will follow. #g2great
Also finding the ways that they don't verbally communicate their differentiated cultures and ideas but what they write about and read #HairBowGirls#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A3: From Vedika, "In our classrooms we use free inquiry, which essicially gives us the power of choice to find texts that properly represent our ideas and thoughts." I agree with her, I appreciate when teachers give us choice in books. #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
A3 Always take time to ask students what books they’d like to see in the school and class libraries. Be sensitive to the diversity in your class and find books that reflect it. #BowTieBoys#BowHairGirls#G2Great
A3: If more choice within books is offered to Ss, they'll automatically choose the right books for them, because they'll see themselves inside the books that they read. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A3 getting to know your students through little conversations can allow you to try and find books that fit them easily #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A3: When Ss have authentic choice and the space and environment to take risks to feel safe - where they have access and are well informed - they choose the books that not only represent THEM, but their neighbors. Important to cultivate diverse libraries and book talk #g2great
A3: I think that you'd have to get to know your students to understand what texts can represents themselves. It's a lot easier for students to be engaged in what they're reading when it relates to them. #g2great#bowtieboys
The classroom libraries that have been most impressive to me aren't only the ones that have the most books, but the ones that have the most diverse and quality books as well! #g2great#BowTieBoys
A3 I LOVE Game Changer by Colby Sharp & Donalyn Miller. They talk about giving kids access to books as mirrors, windows AND sliding glass doors (Rudine Sims Bishop). ALL are so important! #G2Great#BowTieBoys
So true! I feel that #ncte18 had a subtle theme of promoting a variety of reading. There are so many options out there and more being made everyday! #g2great
A3. Finding a book to relate to can invite students to a whole new way of thinking. It gives them the passion to pick up a new book and read for days. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A3 I think one of the best ways to find mirror texts for students is to find books that enable them to walk in the feet of the pro/antagonists and then they can work up to more challenging texts from there #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
So incredibly important. We have to show our Ss that we support them in more than our words. Having books that showcase their identities is an action that not only esteems and affirms them, it is a gateway to rapport. #g2great#BowTieBoys
In reply to
@johnnydowney, @TheSammer88, @ConnorGrady11
I completely agree with you. I also think the freedom for students to choose a book is important, sometimes they just need a little guidance to find the right one #G2Great
Books can act as windows, but the strongest most impactful books are indeed mirrors, which means this question holds serious gravity! #g2great#bowtieboys
A3: Letting students have a say in what books they read builds a sense of student voice in the classroom. Not every student wants to read the same book. Not every student can read as well as others. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A3. (I’m super late to the party!!) But you need to know your students and know your local or school library and then play matchmaker! But if you don’t know your kids and aren’t up-to-date on books (ie. you don’t read) it’s hard to find mirror books! #g2great
Q2: I use music to teach new concepts, but right now don't analyze music as literature...I think its a great idea. Lyrics are rich poetry. Moreover, sometimes I have children analyze visuals as a literacy skill. We should do the same with sounds!! #g2great#litbankstreet
A3: Talking to the Ss can really open up a student to new literature. Discuss the interests and passions of the students as well as how they enjoy passing time. Recommending books to Ss show that you care and can potentially change a window to a mirror. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A4 I encourage teachers to allow choice and personalization in all classroom activities. If a Ss is not completing work, maybe they need less work or different work. All Ss are different. It’s a great thing! #G2Great#BowTieBoys@NKandarpa@AEichenlaub729
A4 I encourage teachers to allow choice and personalization in all classroom activities. If a Ss is not completing work, maybe they need less work or different work. All Ss are different. It’s a great thing! #G2Great#BowTieBoys@NKandarpa@AEichenlaub729
This is such an important point and I hope it doesn't get overlooked. In order to effectively offer mirror texts, positive rapport with students must be established. Love this!
#g2great
A4 While I cannot change the fact that I am a Caucasian woman, I can change how I view and engage in the world and the people around me. How I see the world does not define how the world is seen by our children. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
Absolutely! Sends such a powerful message when we ask them for THEIR choices. What do THEY want to see. It shocks them - and then when we follow through... it's magic. #g2great
I had a meeting with colleauges about this today. Begin with choice, and an interest of knowing who a student is. So much of a student's identity is wrapped up in learning. Right? All children can read, it's about making them self aware giving tools to enhance skills. #G2Great
A4: In this regard, class discussions are the ultimate equalizer. They give every student an opportunity to express their voice and allow the class as a whole to be more all-encompassing #g2great
A2 Many teachers play soft music as kids work/talk but I recommend caution. For some, music competes with thinking/talking rather than supports it. One-size-fits-all views rarely work. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A4: Simply providing an area for discussion will open the floor for Ss to express themselves. As long as the conversation stays positive, it will allow for discussions of change and progress. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A4- In pre-k NEED picture books that feature all kinds of children having normal childhood experiences, these books normalize all kinds of children to their classmates. #G2great#litbankstreet
Definitely. Ts thinking that the fact that all Ss being different is a great thing always get Ss working for instead of against them. Great words, Johnny! #g2great#BowTieBoys
A4 Classrooms are meant to be spaces where students feel comfortable enough to fail and try new things. Before that educational culture can be established, students must know that they are valued as people. #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
Q4: For the students that feel like they have no voice, a way to give them more voice, they can maybe do anonymous votes and give more open forum opportunities. This can give student the representation they need. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
Q4: Asking Ss what THEY want to learn is a sign that teachers care about our opinions. When a teacher bases their ciriculum on our voice,Ss are more likely to enjoy the class.Ask them what they want to do before you plan your year!#g2great
A4: I appreciate teachers who still give help, choice, trust, and respect to students who struggle in a certain subject they teach. Those teachers deserve much respect. #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
A4 I think the very act of making voice and choice a priority in our classrooms opens a door to our marginalized students because we are allowing our schools to become places that work for ALL students. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A3. (I’m super late to the party!!) But you need to know your students and know your local or school library and then play matchmaker! But if you don’t know your kids and aren’t up-to-date on books (ie. you don’t read) it’s hard to find mirror books! #g2great
Exactly examining the product of your students work and analyzing where you want them to be is an amazing way to get to know them better #HairBowGirls#BowTieBoys#G2Great

A4: As a student who is pretty shy and reserved, I like teachers who ask me constantly how im doing and if I have any suggestions on what would make class better because I have the feeling that I have a say in my education, and I do #G2Great
A4 giving students a voice isnt always easy, but to add more choice into the classroom can make the biggest difference #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A4: Make Ss feel welcome in your classroom. Give Ss a voice; build a strong relationship with them where they feel comfortable with speaking to you if they are feeling marginalized. The best thing to do is make Ss feel included and comfortable! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A4: In this regard, class discussions are the ultimate equalizer. They give every student an opportunity to express their voice and allow the class as a whole to be more all-encompassing #g2great
A3 Always take time to ask students what books they’d like to see in the school and class libraries. Be sensitive to the diversity in your class and find books that reflect it. #BowTieBoys#BowHairGirls#G2Great
A4: Discussion. Talking about social issues and giving every student an equal voice will bring out the similarities in all your students, building strong connections and fostering engagement #BowTieBoys#g2great
A4- In pre-k NEED picture books that feature all kinds of children having normal childhood experiences, these books normalize all kinds of children to their classmates. #G2great#litbankstreet
A4: I think that open discussions in class are a great way to include everyone. I personally find open class discussions extremely interesting and I enjoy hearing everyones different opinions. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
I totally agree Spencer, class discussions give everyone an equal say without making any student feel like any others are getting special treatment. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
So this is basically bringing in all students into one whole inclusive group!! Really simple but creative way to tie in and include all types of students! Because as @johnnydowney said, all students are different! #g2great
Welcome, Susan! Great to have you here! Yes, important that we are practitioners. If we teach reading, we read. If we teach writing, we write. #g2great
A4: Very fortunate to work in a school where we're allowed to openly discuss bias with our Ss, as early as K/1st with how good and evil are portrayed in fairytales. In the older grades, students re-write these books to be more inclusive. #g2great#litbankstreet
Q3: we have to authentically know our students in order to help them find texts that mirror them. We need diverse texts in our rooms, but also to do research to find something new when necessary! #g2great#litbankstreet
Of course! In more closed-minded societies, children can go their whole life without even understanding the concept of different races or religion. Children's books are a great to prevent this. #g2great
A4: We work in cooperation not competition. I honor the reading/topic choices that are important to my students. The vibrancy of their responses yield thoughtful insight that we share through written pieces for #nerdybookclub and @ncte’s #BuildYourStack#G2Great
A4. Our classroom library speaks volumes (no pun intended) about who we value and who we are willing to overlook. Marginalized students need to find themselves in our libraries. #G2great
A4: It's tough to gain the trust of Ss who have always been left out. Follow through, every day, and create the welcome center. Make sure everyone has a voice! #g2great
A4: You cannot change who you are but you can change how you approach and connect with your students. Allow choice in your classroom, different students have different learning styles. Open discussions are definitely the way to go! #g2great#HairBowGirls#bowtieboys
A4 Education is the institution that shapes the future generations. It is so important to encourage and teach lessons of compassion and acceptance in school so they are perpetually reinforced. #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
I’d just like to point out that our brilliant #BowTieBoys wrote their own questions and are taking over the #G2Great chat tonight. Now if that’s not impressive, I don’t know what is!
A4 : Voice and Choice should definitely be a priority in classrooms. Students can't learn and can't be very productive if they don't get to choose what they like and what they don't. #g2great#bowtieboys#hairbowgirls
A4: Being inclusive is a very important quality to have. There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing students from different friend groups collaborating and working together. A way that one of my teachers includes all Ss is by calling on every single S each class. #G2Great
Too many books for young children do not feature this- for ex. a book about a child with a disability will tend to be about the disability and not the child or an experience they're having- this can be dangerous. #litbankstreet#g2great
A4 We must be willing to have hard conversations and that can begin by thoughtful books we willingly bring into our classrooms and use them to create safe invitational spaces for students. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A4 By supporting student advocacy, by switching up partnerships and groups, having class meetings to discuss equity, by doing PBL, by having meaningful discussions, by sharing responsibility for curriculum and teaching with Ss. #BowHairGirls#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A4: I think that open discussions in class are a great way to include everyone. I personally find open class discussions extremely interesting and I enjoy hearing everyones different opinions. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A4. Giving the student a chance to pick what type of assignment they want can give them a chance to engage and communicate with other students and also the teachers. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A4: Creating constant opportunities for discussion will prompt even the shyest Ss to share their voices. Ts can help include their Ss by making an effort to get to know them and understanding how each of them learn individually. #g2great
First, glad to see the #nerdybookclub hashtage. Second, I think in the competitive world we live in today, cooperation is critical and needs to be orchestrated. #g2great#bowtieboys
Preach!!! If students feel comfortable and included in a classroom, then they will feel like they're learning something that is worth learning! #g2great
We need all of that we can get in this world Sam. School should create a stepping stone to the life kids are going to lead when they walk out that door! And yes compassion and acceptance should follow them always! #G2Great
A4 Education is the institution that shapes the future generations. It is so important to encourage and teach lessons of compassion and acceptance in school so they are perpetually reinforced. #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A4 By supporting student advocacy, by switching up partnerships and groups, having class meetings to discuss equity, by doing PBL, by having meaningful discussions, by sharing responsibility for curriculum and teaching with Ss. #BowHairGirls#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A5. SM & students -my students are usually Ts. Many do not use Twitter. We encourage but not always a possibility.
Setting boundaries is also important. Contact outside of class is also important.
Make it available.
Some will; some will not!
#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2great
"Cooperation not competition" I love this. Everyone is on the same side in education. Let's work to boost everyone up to reach their full potential. #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A4: We work in cooperation not competition. I honor the reading/topic choices that are important to my students. The vibrancy of their responses yield thoughtful insight that we share through written pieces for #nerdybookclub and @ncte’s #BuildYourStack#G2Great
Classroom rules and things that affect students, but it really could be anything that a student could feel suppressed while talking about. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
Wow! That is wonderful! Love to hear about districts that embrace and celebrate social justice topics just as we openly discuss at our professional conferences and in our networks. #g2great
A4: Being inclusive is a very important quality to have. There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing students from different friend groups collaborating and working together. A way that one of my teachers includes all Ss is by calling on every single S each class. #G2Great
A5 Obviously I’m quite supportive of the idea of engaging students in social media and I think that there are many safe ways to do that even at the elementary level. We shown that time again on this chat #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A5 This would be a good means of building rapport with students. We need to meet them where they are, currently they aren’t on email! I am sure there was a time Ts didn’t even want to use email to communicate with Ss. #G2Great#BowTieBoys@RBeaver05@RishiSingh08
A5: I actually don't use social media w/Ss, as everything is blocked at school. Sort of a danger in my area, sadly. But I do refer to Twitter and Facebook with Ts. #g2great
A5- my students are too young to have their own social media accounts- but we do use it to advertise school events to their families. #g2great#litbankstreet
I feel like if a teacher uses social media to connect with me I feel as though they truly care about my life outside of school and I see them as a person as they see me #BowTieBoys#G2Great#HairBowGirls

A5: Communicating with students outside of school in a appropriate way on social media is good for you to learn more about new teaching styles! #g2great
A5 I would always recommend teachers use social media in some way. As the world becomes more and more digital, it's important to model positive use for students #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A5: My teachers use remind to let us know important dates and information! I know that this is commonly used and I think it is a great way for students to get quickly notified. In addition, students can reply back to teachers with questions! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A5: So many kids nowadays are literally attached to their phones because of social media. I think that a teacher utilizing this CAN lead to stronger rapport both inside and outside of the classroom #G2Great#bowtieboys
A5 I think social media can open students and teachers to their lives and they can see what they share in common, these little bits of similarity or interest can help students realize that their teachers are people too #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
Wise words! Students are shifting to other forms of media. Using Remind is a safe yet productive app to allow students and teachers. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A5: Establishing a professional social media can help establish a more personal relationship with a student and can help them for different purposes. It can also help them realize that the teachers actually care about the student in less of an artificial way. #g2great
A5 Social media is a tool that is not going away. But social media can make ss feel that teachers understand the world they live in, one typically filled with social media #g2great#bowtieboys
I’m so grateful that more and more teachers are recognizing the impact that social media can have both personally and professionally. We still have a long way to go to stop the ‘eye rolling’ but I think we’re gaining on it! #G2Great
I feel like if a teacher uses social media to connect with me I feel as though they truly care about my life outside of school and I see them as a person as they see me #BowTieBoys#G2Great#HairBowGirls

A4 The world is a big place with many perspectives. Our minds, hearts, and spirits have to be just as big and open. These values make an impact. #G2Great
Q4: keep topics concrete and RELEVANT to what students are actually experiencing. don't be dishonest about historic or present xenophobia/oppression in order to protect, be AUTHENTIC and tell the truth! Real history is everything! #g2great#litbankstreet
A5: I have never connected with a teacher over social media. It may help shy S's, or any student, connect with their teachers. It might help stop the feeling of t and s, one party in power, and create a relationship of educator and learner. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A5: this year more than others I have seen almost all of my teachers use remind text. This may not be exactly a form of social media but it definitely builds rapport past the classroom #G2Great
A5:Modern students spend a lot of time on social media, so it's very convenient for them to be able to communicate with teachers! Also, many Ss are shy/afraid to talk to their teachers in person, so it's helpful to talk with them on social media!#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
A5: I always love when teachers can take the time to be open and personal with me. It makes them feel less like administrators and more like people. #g2great
A5 : Social media is a great way to communicate and it also shows personality. I find myself using it a lot to communicate important information with other people. If Ts can communicate with Ss through social media, the work space will improve. #g2great#bowtieboys#hairbowgirls
I love this. I feel that educators have a responsibility to remain real - it's the best way to inform students of everything around them #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A5 More and more teachers have created classroom twitter accounts and I love that schools are using it to share the wonderful things that they are doing. This has opened so many rich possibilities. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A5 My students are typically under 13 in elementary, so social media is not a communication tool with students, but it is with parents and families. #g2great
A5:I love when my teachers post things because I feel that I can get to know them outside of the classroom! Almost all students use social media to connect with their friends, and it’s a good way for teachers to form a bond with us!#g2great
I totally agree, it establishes a more real relationship between a teacher and student, and can help a student realize that a teacher really loves their job. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
A5: Social media has already become most Ss go to communication. Social media can allow teachers the chance to reach students on their main platform and connect in ways other methods can't. #g2great#BowTieBoys
Absolutely! Sends such a powerful message when we ask them for THEIR choices. What do THEY want to see. It shocks them - and then when we follow through... it's magic. #g2great
A4: Building authentic relationships with Ss is the key. It's a cliche quote, but it's my favorite: "no S cares what you know until they know that you care." We have to get to know EACH of them and let them know we are here to teach, but also to support, to listen #g2great
A5. Using sm can give the teacher various opportunities to gain better rapport with the ss. Using different sm tools like Instagram can show the ss that you are like them and on the same level. This also lets the ss feel more comfortable around the teacher. #g2great#BowTieBoys
#g2great A5: This is a great question as social media is a big part of Ss everyday lives and teachers could really take this and use it to their advantage with things outside of the classroom
This is so true. There is very little more discouraging than spotty communication. Although it can be difficult, it works wonders #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
I agree. Students always have their phones with them and using social media to tell them important dates or other important information is a great way to get it through to all students. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
I think with ts using social media, ss can see how to appropriately use it to their benefit and learn from their elders, even though the tech is new. #g2great#bowtieboys
A4 The world is a big place with many perspectives. Our minds, hearts, and spirits have to be just as big and open. These values make an impact. #G2Great
A 5 absolutely! I text students and we also use texts in class to have chats between different characters and persons keeping true to the text. #BowTieBoys#BowHairGirls#G2Great
I would suggest creating an account that reflects a teachers real personality, while keeping a professional demeanor. This can help to show the students that the teachers are people too. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
A5: Social media is a convenient and effective way for Ts to communicate and connect with Ss. I personally much prefer this to sending an email that might just lost in my T's inbox. #g2great
I teach elementary, so I don't! I worry about use of social media and technology in schools. Its a great skillset, but other kinds of skills are necessary, and I worry about the impact of technology use on very young minds. #g2great#litbankstreet
A6. Multi-modal: Advertisement can be print-based (newspaper), audio (radio) or video (TV).
Book talk can be print based, audio or video.
Encourage quick drafting - not perfect performance or "I don't look good" as it is about the learning!
#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2great
A5: Students everywhere use social media constantly. Take advantage of that, social media often portrays a negative image. You can use social media to lift your student up,which makes your classroom a better place, and let's them trust you. #g2great
Thank you for modeling digital literacy for your students. I feel that it is an undervalued aspect of the classroom today, but that doesn't diminish its importance #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A 5 absolutely! I text students and we also use texts in class to have chats between different characters and persons keeping true to the text. #BowTieBoys#BowHairGirls#G2Great
.@colbysharp made an excellent point at #NCTE18 that children need mentors for how to leave positive digital imprints and that is part of our work too. #G2Great

A1. Visuals - perfect entry point for new skill. Levels the playing field. How do we READ this visual?
Then assess the talk and understanding after practice and BEFORE using print.
No surprises - know the task & purpose when add print.
#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2great
A6 SUCH a great way to show what you know. This type of a project is exactly what we need more of. Multimodal will allow Ss to creatively think and process information in new ways keeping them engaged while learning. #G2Great#BowTieBoys@jackmichael776@JasonNg70025993
A6 I’ve seen students creating their own presentations around a variety of topics to share with others. I absolutely love this idea because the ability to community with others is such a critical life skill. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A 5 absolutely! I text students and we also use texts in class to have chats between different characters and persons keeping true to the text. #BowTieBoys#BowHairGirls#G2Great
Especially in my school district, many Ss feel the need to be perfect. By encouraging quick drafting, you are doing a great thing by showing a process and that any product has to go through several iterations! #g2great#bowtieboys
A6 Everyone has different strengths. Everyone has different weaknesses. Differentiated multimodal presentations allow students to express their opinions and comprehension in ways that best fit them. #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
Not cliche at all Jason. Without the relationships that connect us human to human, learning will forever reside on shaky grounds. That has to be foundation of all we do! #G2Great
A4: Building authentic relationships with Ss is the key. It's a cliche quote, but it's my favorite: "no S cares what you know until they know that you care." We have to get to know EACH of them and let them know we are here to teach, but also to support, to listen #g2great
A6: Most projects in Pre-k are multimodal. Young learners need to access new ideas in a variety of ways to process and understand them. #g2great#litbankstreet
A6 Allowing students to get creative with their projects allows them to really open up, my english class made advertisements to learn about ethos, pathos, logos. and That helped greatly and was fun! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A5. I use social media and although I don’t know about the effect on rapport, I know my college students can tell through my twitter account how much I care about my subject matter! And I think that matters! #g2great
A6: I only really create projects in one class, and usually many students blow them off and do the bare minimum. Personally, I prefer online projects, since I don't have to worry about this huge poster of sorts. Many Ss are too busy for that. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A1- slides and presentations are really helpful, if they are done the right way. If you maximize the use of the slides to students, it can be so helpful. if not, it creates a barrier between the student and the subject, making it murky and unclear to them. #G2Great
A6: Powerpoint projects that accompany a presentation have been the most beneficial to the building of my character. I find that they help my professionalism, organization, and most importantly for me, confidence. #g2great#BowTieBoys
Q6:I learn best when creating projects!I prefer being up and moving, rather than sitting at a desk copying notes. When given the opportunity to create a project of some sorts, freedom is given to Ss!#g2great
#g2great. A6: For me it helps break up class and let’s Ss show that they can present in different mediums. This lets us explore what works for us and show our teacher that we care about what we are learning. #bowtieboys
A6: I absolutely love getting assigned multimedia projects and will always make a video with 200% effort every time. It is something im very passionate about. Assigning projects like these allow for more expression and creativity to flow #G2Great
A6: The use of projects involving creativity. Creativity is arguably the most important skill in the outside world. What is the biggest business word right now? #disruption !! Let your students use their creativity to "disrupt" the daily grind in a classroom. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A6 Yes, We have students perform their own TedTalks. We use multimodal texts to enchance curriculum and to grant access through a shared experience. #G2Greathttps://t.co/7xuDbB8vMv
A6 Multimodal presentations have the potential to not only help the presenters' understanding, but the class' as well. Sometimes a different medium is all it takes for a student to have their 'a-ha' moment #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A6: Allowing students different choices for projects eliminates them feeling as if they are only doing the project to get it done, rather they can enjoy the project and benefit from the learning and information. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A5: My Ss use REMIND, the bowtieboys and hairbowgirls use GROUPME, we tweet (obviously), I maintain a professional space on Instagram that many Ss follow. It does open up doors to rapport (that rhymes). Shows that we are real people too! #g2great
A5: Sonetimes, but many of my students view social media as their private realm. One they do not want their teacher to be privy to. Still, I use it to celebrate and honor their words. Check out: https://t.co/mAlXhmw7X7 and comment! #G2Great
A6: Projects are hands down my favorite way to receive a grade. Projects boost students' creativity and in the process, actually teaches them. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A6: I only really create projects in one class, and usually many students blow them off and do the bare minimum. Personally, I prefer online projects, since I don't have to worry about this huge poster of sorts. Many Ss are too busy for that. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A6: Multimodal projects provide new ways to apply information you've learned into different mediums. Currently, I'm doing a comic strip and an interactive game in English about the Odyssey #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
A6: We utilize a lot of model making. During our Hudson River study, we create a massive model of what the river community looks like now, and gradually change it back through the year, as we learn about the Lenape people. #g2great#litbankstreet
A6 John Medina said that every teacher should be required to take drama course. I believe so strongly that drama is also a powerful learning tool that allows us to embrace a wide range of varied opportunities #G2Great#BowTieBoys
TedTalks are an awesome idea. So many people are familiar with the format and it is a great venue for formulating and expressing opinions #G2Great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A6 Yes, We have students perform their own TedTalks. We use multimodal texts to enchance curriculum and to grant access through a shared experience. #G2Greathttps://t.co/7xuDbB8vMv
A6: I love multimedia projects when I understand what I am expected to demonstrate, and when I retain the freedom to demonstrate it in the way that I know best. #g2great
A6: Different lessons on different types of media really help me remember the lesson in it's own unique way. I think utilizing multimedia for lessons is a great idea #G2Great#BowTieBoys
That sounds amazing, Jenn! I would LOVE to see some exemplars of these TedTalks. Must be an amazing and engaging experience for your students. #g2great
Exactly although powerpoint is important it doesn't mean that It will guide me through my life we need other ways for students to express themselves #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#g2great
A6. For one course, rather than a final exam, we do a digital storytelling project with images, music, and a script they write reflecting on their views on education. I learn more about my students than I would with a test! #g2great
A6: I love having a multimodal kind of presentation, it exposes a student to many different types of presentation types, and it gives many students lots of voice and choice, which helps them prepare for the real world. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
A6: Ss can individualize their projects so they can all be different. Most of the time I make a powerpoint or make a 3D model to show what something should look like. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
That sounds amazing, Jenn! I would LOVE to see some exemplars of these TedTalks. Must be an amazing and engaging experience for your students. #g2great
Students with a Ted Talk!! This ties in all different forms of creativity! This also allows the Ss to develop presentation skills, which is very important in the outside world. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A6: Multimodal projects are a great way to get all your Ss involved. Right now, one of my classes is designing activities to teach our peers about a book. I am enjoying this project and creating new activities a lot. This gets Ss to step into the shoes of a teacher #g2great
A6: I love having a multimodal kind of presentation, it exposes a student to many different types of presentation types, and it gives many students lots of voice and choice, which helps them prepare for the real world. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
I can completely agree, Madison! Many people don't have the time or money to go out and buy supplies while you can just do it online! It's easy, fast, and you can carry it around online. #BowTieBoys#G2great
A6: I only really create projects in one class, and usually many students blow them off and do the bare minimum. Personally, I prefer online projects, since I don't have to worry about this huge poster of sorts. Many Ss are too busy for that. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A6: I currently in the process of working on a Multimodal project in one of my classes! It's best to plan things out, think of what you want the end product to be and work backwards from there. Thin about how you will get there. #g2great#bowtieboys
Sorry I’m late to #G2great tonight - we were at my (wasn’t he just a tiny baby?) son’s first high school open house. *gasps*
Looking forward to catching up on the convo - love these insights & perspectives!
And when we add creativity to the loop we maximize engagement - and with increased engagement comes increased learning. Seems like a great big WIN-WIN to me Giana! #G2Great
A6 I wonder if sometimes we get it backwards as teachers, planning our lessons before we really know our kids. The kinds of multi-modal projects we use should be based on the needs of the student in front of us. #G2Great#BowTieBoys

I absolutely love the idea of coming back to a collaborative project throughout the year and building on it rather than forgetting about it! #g2great#BowTieBoys
That sounds awesome! I love how you managed to integrate projects in place of tests, which allows students to explore the information more! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A7 Listen to the Ss and talk about what they are reading. These are vital to the success of teaching reading. No other assessment means can dive into the heart of what we are trying to accomplish with Ss. #G2Great#BowTieBoys@tq_williamson@CSporre
exactly that way if a student isn't skilled at taking an exam they are able to display their knowledge in many other ways. This is how students truly grow #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#g2great
It's amazing that they learn how to do these projects at such an early age. You're right! Children need to learn how to access these ideas from a very young age so they can understand them as they progress from grade to grade.#G2Great#bowtieboys
I totally agree, the kinds of projects that are given should fit the type of class, and the right kind of question helps a student learn in the best way possible. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
Your final sentence there truly captivates me. Tests teach you what students studied the night before, but projects teach you about what students have done throughout their life time. #g2great#bowtieboys
A7 I don’t view independent reading as something to be graded but rather as something that is a springboard to thinking and could thus inform those experiences. We don’t want to reduce this practice to a grade #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A6. Multimodal presentation's give students the chance to communicate and build better rapport with each other. It can also give the students different ways of thinking. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A7: Conferring and authentic assessments of understanding like recommendations and reviews — talking about what students are reading in ways that honor them as thinkers who I can learn from #g2great#bowtieboys#hairbowgirls#litbankstreet
I feel like if my independent reading is graded it feels forced in a way it takes the fun out of reading and takes out the love I have for it #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#g2great

In my opinion, projects do a much better job of assessing a student's knowledge anyway. It's like the old quote about the fish not able to climb a tree. Students can't be forced into boxes, they have to be given choice to thrive #g2great
A7: Independent reading is a great way to get the imagination of a S. I feel that they should be graded on how much they understand or on reading comprehension. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A7: Independent reading should be graded based on the number of minutes read, and if there is an essay written, it should be based on comprehension and effort. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
A7 In my setting, independent reading is assessed through conferring. We have expectations and ranges for both independent and instructional levels. I look for patterns in decoding and comprehension over time. Then I teach to individual needs. #G2Great
A 6 When students present multi modal projects energy is so high. They can do solo, partner, or small group presentations. A great way to develop and utilize Ss creativity! #BowHairGirls#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A7 I believe it is important to resist the urge to slap a grade on everything. Grades have the potential to take the organic interest out of assignments sometimes and independent reading is not something we can afford to turn students off to #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A7: Grade for skills, not for content. I never ask kids plot based questions. No one in the real world cares if they can list every character in Frankenstein. They care that they can read with a critical eye, understand lenses, and offer their own interpretations #g2great
A7 I love doing deep discussions on reading. By listening to peers, not only can you look at things from a different point of view, but you can reinvent your entire frame of reference for that book all while being able to provide substantial content. #g2great#bowtieboys
A7 Grading reading turns students off from reading for their own pleasure, I think the best way to asses independent reading is through book talks and with recommendations of the book with peers #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A-2- I have always had a really tough time figuring out how many pages I read, or how long I was reading. I think that students should be asked one question- "did you read?" that way it's easy for them to remember and easy to grade #G2great
A7: No grades in Pre-k - but I don't think older students should be graded for this either- it's their time to explore and build their love of literacy, they should not have to do that under the microscope. #litbankstreet#G2great
A7: I like what my english teacher does with weekly reading logs online. We can read whatever we want and just have to write a small summary one the stuff we read that week #G2Great
A7: My T gives us 5 points every day for in class reading, 2.5 points for reading and 2.5 for bringing a book. We write about what we are reading and find elements such as figurative language in our books. It makes sure we are staying engaged. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A7: Multimodal presentations allow students to creatively choose what they think will be their best performance. Since the Ss are comfortable with their choice, the T can lean more toward objective grading, but still take into account the subjective aspect. #g2great
A7: Through multimodal projects, allowing students to demonstrate the theme of their book in whichever way they choose. Ask students to relate this theme to a similar theme from another piece of literature. #g2great#BowTieBoys
I think that independent reading should be graded loosely, so the fun of reading is still involved, and students will want to read. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
I feel like if my independent reading is graded it feels forced in a way it takes the fun out of reading and takes out the love I have for it #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#g2great

A7: Independent reading is a great thing for students to be exposed to. I think, as a student, that independent reading should be assessed on a student's connection and understanding of the book they read. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A7 Teachers often ask me how to PROVE kids are reading. I can’t imagine a better way than to engage them in collaborative conversations about their reading (which also translates reading advertisements) #G2Great#BowTieBoys
#g2great A7: another good question! I think that independent reading should be graded on the number of minutes Ss spent reading that way everyone has a fair chance and their grade is up to them
Your final sentence there truly captivates me. Tests teach you what students studied the night before, but projects teach you about what students have done throughout their life time. #g2great#bowtieboys
A7: I think independent reading should be graded on the questions they ask after reading it. I also think it should be graded on how much they took away from the book. #G2great
A6: With inquiry projects, students choose their own anchor texts, supplementary texts, create original products and presentations. The strategy that works is SCAFFOLDING. We start with me deciding everything and slowly I give them more and more control. #g2great
A7: From another Hairbow Girl, "In my English class, reading is based off completion. It counts as a formative grade, so it doesn't change my grade, but it still increases my reading skills and over all comprehension for the end of year SOL." #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
Yep! That's what I was going to say! Smart Ss here on #g2great! Book talks DO tell if Ss are reading. You can assess using a simple rubric and CONFER w/Ss! #g2great
A7 Grading reading turns students off from reading for their own pleasure, I think the best way to asses independent reading is through book talks and with recommendations of the book with peers #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A7 I don't grade independent reading. We confer with students and have authentic conversations/observations to guide instruction/feedback. Grades come from other assessments/tasks that are enhanced by copious indep. rdg. #g2great
A7: Ideally, independent reading logs shouldn't be necessary. I recall them ruining many of my passions reads because I had to keep stopping to record. If the multimodal project at the end can properly display their knowledge of the book, why use a reading log? #g2great
What a great opportunity those conversations must be, not only for getting direct information on how a student is progression, but also to build rapport. Books have interesting topics. Teachers shouldn't be afraid to just discuss! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A7 Teachers often ask me how to PROVE kids are reading. I can’t imagine a better way than to engage them in collaborative conversations about their reading (which also translates reading advertisements) #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A7: I think independent reading should be graded based on a student's personal goals, not assigned goals. It can be really stressful if a student is assigned reading that is personally hard to achieve. #g2great#bowtieboys
A7: It should not be graded at all! The grades will promote a bad connection to reading in the brains of the Ss. Grading the connections Ss make with literature will make students read, but emphasize connections over speed and length of reading. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A 6 When students present multi modal projects energy is so high. They can do solo, partner, or small group presentations. A great way to develop and utilize Ss creativity! #BowHairGirls#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A7:I think instead of a quiz on the book, why not just have a sit-down chat with them? Discuss the book with the Ss and have them talk about their favorite characters and aspects of the story. It not only shows their understanding, but it's less stressful then a quiz #G2Great
A7. Independent reading should be graded on what the student comprehended and learned from the book. Look for deeper meanings of the book rather than general questions. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A7 Independent reading is a great time for the teachers to observe, confer or even coach. These opportunities afford us a tremendous amount of information that can then be used for future instructional purposes. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A7: Students should be assessed and graded on their reading by how much they actually comprehended from the book. They should always be interested in what they are reading, because if they are not, then they will not do well on the book assessment. #G2Great
That is a great point, I definitely think that the younger part of a kids life should be devoted to exploring their opinions on literature, but once you get older Ss might stop reading often, so some teacher feel the need to grade reading, which isn't a negative either. #g2great
I agree, I think having Ss talk about their reading starts good conversations and gets Ss more involved in their books. #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
A7: Students should be assessed and graded on their reading by how much they actually comprehended from the book. They should always be interested in what they are reading, because if they are not, then they will not do well on the book assessment. #G2Great
A7: Since independent reading means that you are reading the book by yourself that you should be graded on how you personally understand the material. #BowTieBoys#G2great
Having the choice of how many (if any) people to present with is an important freedom as well. Sometimes working alone is helpful to students, sometimes groups are better. Love the student choice #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A 6 When students present multi modal projects energy is so high. They can do solo, partner, or small group presentations. A great way to develop and utilize Ss creativity! #BowHairGirls#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A7: Independent reading is a skill that shouldn't be graded. Students will feel pressured and not enjoy it as much. Each student is at a different reading level and it stresses everyone out if they have an assigned goal, rather than setting their own. #g2great
A8 I have always believed children shouldn’t have to work all day and go home to work all night.
Read for 20 min.
Go outside and play.
Kids should be having fun at home!
#G2Great#BowTieBoys@MisterAMisterA
A8. b. Homework
It depends.
Cannot be NEW learning.
NEVER as a punishment.
It so depends on what the work is and WHY it needs to be done.
Is it so S can meet with partner? Work that has been assigned for two or three weeks?
#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2great
A8. a.Stress - Can always ask for more time for assignment BEFORE it is due except last week of semester.
Prior notification.Planful.
Frequent check ins to check on target-no surprise or panic at last minute.
Choice on how to SHARE learning!
#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2great
A7 I think teachers can gather formative information about independent reading through conferences and students can self-assess by identifying areas of growth:”How have I grown as a reader? How is my reading identity evolving? What has reading taught me about myself?” #G2Great
A7: Independent reading assessments can involve subjective grading and controversy. I think Ts should have a discussion with their Ss and grade based on participation and comprehension. #g2great
That way the understanding of the books or texts students are reading are much higher then they would be if the stress of grading was in the back of their mind #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#g2great
A8 Reducing stress for kids begins with reducing stress for teachers because there will always be a trickle-down effect if we’re under duress. It’s like the airplane rule: Put on your own oxygen mask first. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A8: Taking the stress of the student with a due date thats set by the student that is reasonable to how they learn. This is why it's important to get to know your students! #G2Great
A8: Aside from independent reading, I don’t really believe in homework or grades — assessment matters, but there isn’t a level playing field when it comes to home support, and it tends to breed stress and unhealthy competition #g2great#bowtieboys#hairbowgirls#litbankstreet
A8: From hairbowgirl Anjali, "having
a lot of homework puts more stress on Ss to get it done, leading them to resort to copying and not actually learning the information" #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A8: My student's stress is mostly emotional- we manage it through clear routines. For ex. each area has a sign-in where Ss can place their pictures, this shows them when it's full so they don't get stressed about if they can fit there. #g2great#litbankstreet
A8: Listing guidelines and expectations and an essential part of my destressing routine. I'll make a list on my own, but having a 1 on 1 with the teacher does wonders to calm me down and help me manage work #g2great
A8 A way to reduce stress is to show students it's okay to talk about what is holding them back. A classroom where students feel safe to share is a classroom where students have an outlet to de-stress #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A8: By far the best way to reduce classroom stress is to establish the personal and open link with Ss from day one. From then on, they will trust you. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A8: I said this at NCTE and I will say it again. I don't give homework. It just stresses kids out and then they cheat. They play the GAME to survive. I give kids A's. When grades are out of the picture students focus on learning. This has been the model for APLang #g2great
There are many ways to deal with students stress. I think that a lot of the stress comes from Hmwk and grades. I believe that hmwk should only be used if they need the help or want the help. Ss should be able to manage their own education. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A8: I think that students definitely stress out about homework and test grades, and some greade might be beneficial, but some students might stop caring if they aren't physically getting assessed. It is a very controversial topic and can be supported either way. #g2great
Q8:I am very easily stressed!Every student works differently, and has a different schedule.Having multiple deadlines and requiring different sections to be complete at different times helps, and giving feedback in between deadlines is helpful!#g2great
A8 people get stressed. There is no changing that. But we can help reduce that. Letting Ss know that you are a human changes things a lot. Everyone messes up and we shouldnt be punished for doing so, but instead rewarded for the good. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
A8: By far the best way to reduce classroom stress is to establish the personal and open link with Ss from day one. From then on, they will trust you. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A8: Mr.Augustowski i ams o amazing on how you have developed such a concentrated class and students that love to learn and dig deeper in what you are teaching them in class!! #g2great
A8: I think homework can help Ss, but too much can harm them. Too much homework stacked on top of each other can cause a lot of stress. Speaking of stress, listening to music and taking small breaks can be really helpful for reduce stress in the class room #g2great#bowtieboys
A8: I always appreciate a teacher that is laid back and conducts their class in a "go at your own pace" kinda way, it reduces stress. The less homework the less stress as well. I feel like the more homework you give the less helpful it will be ##G2Great
A8: Simply talking to Ss one on one is the best way to understand what is going on in their lives and how to reduce stress for them #g2great#BowTieBoys
All students do look up to their teachers whether they admit it or not, they do feed off of your energy so if the energy is stress free, stress will decrease in the classroom #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#g2great
A8: By far the best way to reduce classroom stress is to establish the personal and open link with Ss from day one. From then on, they will trust you. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A8 As a Ss, I know that when teachers move things due to traumatic events for you it makes you feel much more comfortable. After I was exposed to a traumatic event this year and my teachers were so sincere and kind by making arrangements FOR me! #g2great#bowtieboys
A8: Simply having conversations with the Ss about things like the class, other aspects of school, life outside school, preference on grading, study strategies, etc. Allow the students to gradually trust you by giving them respect as well! #g2great#BowTieBoys
A8: By far the best way to reduce classroom stress is to establish the personal and open link with Ss from day one. From then on, they will trust you. #g2great#BowTieBoys
Q8:I always appreciate when teachers consider our time outside of school to not be working time and to be our time of break! Learn in school and work at your best, Relax at home! #G2Great
A8: I find that homework is one of the main stressors for students. I prefer to only have homework when I know I really need it to help me understand the lesson. #g2great#bowtieboys
A8: I strongly believe homework causes unnecessary stress for Ss. For students who need the extra push and practice, homework is very helpful. For students who are very busy and have other work to do, it can cause extra stress. #BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#G2Great
A8 The only homework I'll ever advocate for in elementary is: play outside, read, talk with your family, volunteer your time or do chores, play around with writing, explore your world and ask questions, get a good night's sleep. #G2Great
A8: A good way to relieve stress for Ss is to allow them to express themselves. Many students are always worried about their grade and don't actually focus on their content. I think that if Ts let them know they don't have to worry about it, their content will improve #g2great
Sometimes I have hours of homework, but I have to balance it with extras to. I think if you assign homework per student, it makes it easy. ask the student- "how much homework can you handle" then assign it per student #G2great
A8: Connect with your S's on a personal level. Creating an elevated level of rapport can help S's feel comfortable in their classrooms and even help struggling S's gain motivation for work. If S's care about their teachers, they will WANT to work for them #g2great#bowtieboys
A8: The main source of stress for Ss is time management due to extracurricular activities. If Ts took these into account and were flexible, then all Ss would have a great deal of pressure taken off of them #g2great#BowTieBoys
Homework is very hard to find a positive answer too, because it varies on the class and on the students, so I think that it should be more individualized and the teachers help them decide to be what the best option is for that individual student.#g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys
A8: Every assignment is able to be revised and resubmitted for up to full credit. 50% is the lowest score a student can get - an E is an E. I do not give homework. Sometimes students ask to do things at home. I have not given a test or quiz in over a decade. #G2Great
A8: Students are put under a great amount of pressure from tests, assignments, etc. All of my teachers understand this and try their best to comfort us. Suggestions: Playing music, bringing in candy, fun review games, and much more! #G2Great
Students can get super overwhelmed with daily activities along with their school days. Stress can be a normal part of the day for some students while they are giving tons of homework or projects at school. #BowTieBoys#G2great
A8. Hard to manage stress in college. Anxiety is high! I always accept late work as a gift to students — it’s the gift of time which some students need. #g2great
A8: I think that homework should not be graded on compleation or accuracy, but rather on effort. Many Ss don't get the lesson the time the homework is assigned. They just need some real help and instruction. Deadlines are most stressful for me.#g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A8 cont. I think hw isnt needed. but instead practice that the Ss can take up and utilize if they think they need it. allow a space where Ss can come in and feel comfortable (like lunch) and just talk about what they can do to improve #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls#NCTE18
That is a great philosophy! If you stress students out when they are young, it continues into their upper years. Very glad that you reduce the stress on elementary students! #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
A8 Start with building relationships, getting to know students, creating a safe environment. Being responsive and empathetic. Offering choice, inviting conversation. Flexibility. #G2Great
A8: I think managing homework is a big step in the right direction for handling stress. Most of my stress comes from all the work I have to get done by the end of the week, helping Ss through this stress by limiting homework can help a lot #G2Great#bowtieboys
A 8 Homework that’s busy work has to go! Reading of self-selected books only homework I give. Ss give 1 minute elevator talks on favorite books. Ss need Free Unprogrammed time. #BowHairGirls#BowTieBoys#G2Great
A8 The emotional tone we set begins on day one & impacts ALL that happens in a learning day - for better or for worse. This makes it crucial to be intentional in creating a positive environment for learning. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A8 Reducing stress for kids begins with reducing stress for teachers because there will always be a trickle-down effect if we’re under duress. It’s like the airplane rule: Put on your own oxygen mask first. #G2Great#BowTieBoys
A8: Sean Hamidi. I strongly believe that sometimes in a school environment, assignment could be pushed on students, without giving them enough time complete it. Therefore, it makes them stressed. A resolving act is doing a fun activity, to encourage positivity.
#G2Great
A8: I think homework should not be graded but overlooked by teaches to make sure that students are still improving their skills for the future.
#g2great
A8: Ss face so much stress head on during the school year. I think that hmwk should be optional, S shouldn't be required to waste valuable time on a concept they already understand. Grades should be determined by the S's ability to follow clear procedures. #g2great
On behalf of students everywhere, thank you for this. Sometimes a little extra time is all we need, for a number of different reasons, and it is very reassuring to be reminded teachers are aware of that fact. #g2great#BowTieBoys#HairBowGirls
How would you decide to be flexible, if there is extended due dates, how would teachers not know that other students would procrastinate longer. What is the extent of being flexible while not giving students an outlet to be lazy. #g2great#hairbowgirls#bowtieboys

#G2Great#BowTieBoys@MisterAMisterA
thats amazing. I always appreciate teachers who will take the time to understand the work the students are putting in outside of school and the other commitments they have. Having teachers who understand this relives stress #G2Great
A8. T should have 1 on 1 talks with ss who seem to be struggling with stress. I have a T who I talk to everyday about whats going on with my life. Every time we talk, she tells me that life will get better. This helped me through anytime of stress. #g2great#BowTieBoys
A8: Students have so much pressure in school. It's about who gets into the best college - which doesn't even promise a good job. We stay up all night to finish projects that won't affect us in life at all. Grades don't define the person. #g2great
