Q1: What opportunities can we provide for students to build the skills that lead to the joy of discovery? #5thchat
  • yenneam Mar 6 @ 8:05 PM EST
Ann from Colorado Springs, 5th grade. Favorite adventure: when I was in college at @ucsantabarbara , I would take off on my bike each night at sunset to find the best cliff spot to watch the sunset. #5thchat

We need to share our joys and be a model for learning by being an example of what a life long learner looks like. #5thchat
  • brianfahey61 Mar 6 @ 8:07 PM EST
A1: Providing opportunities for independence, project-based learning, support system for them to take risks #5thchat
  • mrsseibel5th - Moderator Mar 6 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: We can provide a classroom that allows for them to explore interests and/or allows them to create what and how they learn about standards #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:09 PM EST
Q1: If we provide opportunities for Ss to discover through inquiry-based approaches, they slowly rely less on teacher 4 “answers” & find the power in themselves... THAT creates the joy! #5thchat
  • msweisenbeck Mar 6 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1- The joy of discovery comes from ownership and inquiry. I am teaching the ocean floor- Ss got excited when someone asked about animals that lived deep in the trenches! The excitement grew as they made their own discoveries! #5thchat

  • mmdetrick Mar 6 @ 8:12 PM EST
Hi All! Mo from SoMD drove across USA last summer to all the places my Ss wanted me to visit! #5thchat
  • yenneam Mar 6 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1 Finding ways to make their required learning relevant to them. Here's a standard, a skill that you will need because . . . Now how would you like to learn it, practice it, and demonstrate mastery of it? The sky is the limit! #5thchat
  • mrslc_m Mar 6 @ 8:12 PM EST
Q1: cultivating an environment where risk taking can lead to discovery, students often are afraid to explore their passions (fears, failures, peers) #5thchat
  • msweisenbeck Mar 6 @ 8:13 PM EST
    A2- Provide the opportunities! #5thchat
  • JJ_Burry Mar 6 @ 8:13 PM EST

  • JJ_Burry Mar 6 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1: We can allow time for exploration into independent interests and learning. Time is hard to relinquish, but a little each day is worth it in the long run. #5thchat
    • bmiller_FSTS Mar 6 @ 8:05 PM EST
Q1: What opportunities can we provide for students to build the skills that lead to the joy of discovery? #5thchat
  • yenneam Mar 6 @ 8:15 PM EST
A2 Listen and observe. Let them know that you notice what they are passionate about. Ask them how they can work their interests into what they're learning and vice versa. Everyone loves to be noticed, heard, and known. Find their currency. #5thchat
  • mrslc_m Mar 6 @ 8:16 PM EST
Q2: relationships with Ss, know their desires and passions, having conversations about their passions, allowing them paths to investigate #5thchat #MeanIt #BeGenuine #KidsCanTellWhenYouFakeIt
  • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:16 PM EST
Q2: A classroom wonder wall has done WONDERS (😆) in my room! I praise Ss 4 making connections & show genuine interest in their thoughts. It then becomes contagious & we’re ALL curious 4 more! #5thchat
  • mrsseibel5th - Moderator Mar 6 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: I think relevance is important and giving them a chance to explore #5thchat
  • JJ_Burry Mar 6 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: We can provide the time, help with building ideas, encourage interests, and reveal trial and error (including failing and trying again) through modeling. #5thchat

  • brianfahey61 Mar 6 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: We have to look at evaluation in order to do this. Traditional eval is too restrictive, curtails inquiry, creatitvity #5thchat
  • ItsAMrY Mar 6 @ 8:17 PM EST
#5thchat A2: Let the Q linger. Don't feel the need to funnel every suggestion towards the answer. Let Ss evaluate conjectures & learn how to prove/disprove them. Saying "yes" or "no" to everything Ss say is like throwing fish to barking seals. They won't listen to each other!
  • JJ_Burry Mar 6 @ 8:18 PM EST
I'd love to hear more about the Wonder Wall. How does it work? #5thchat

Q3: How can we use technology to organize and facilitate discovery? #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:20 PM EST
(1 of 2) I have a designated section of my whiteboard labeled “Wonder Wall” w/ post-it notes & pencils. When Ss ask a thoughtful question that we don’t have the answer to they write it on a post-it note and stick it to the wonder wall.... #5thchat

  • LindaFarringer Mar 6 @ 8:21 PM EST
Good evening, #5thchat! Linda, AP from Winchester, VA. My husband and I went to Yosemite several years ago, and it was our most favorite vacation. We can’t wait to go back one day.
  • msweisenbeck Mar 6 @ 8:21 PM EST
We keep a "wonder wall" ongoing in Padlet. This is a source we go to for ideas for Passion Projects or Sidequest activities. #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:22 PM EST
(2 of 2) Then, throughout the day Ss can grab a post-it note and research the answer, then write or type the answer and add it back 2 wall w/ post-it note. At the end of week we share any new information that was discovered in our wonder wall! #5thchat
    In reply to @JJ_Burry
  • brianfahey61 Mar 6 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: There are lots of ways for kids to use tech for discovery and to expand their skills with video and other tools. Important 1/2 #5thchat
  • brianfahey61 Mar 6 @ 8:23 PM EST
2/2 to mix that in with doing things with their hands so that they have that kind of discovery too, knitting, woodworking etc... #5thchat
  • jaslyn4ESL Mar 6 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2. We can foster student desires & promote inquiry engaging activities. For example, utilizing modern technology like expedition googles-students are engaged & involved in something that is exciting. Ss don’t even think that there actually learning, but having fun! #5thchat
    In reply to @bmiller_FSTS

  • JJ_Burry Mar 6 @ 8:24 PM EST
This sounds awesome!! How do you introduce it, and do you set aside class time for answering the questions? #5thchat
    In reply to @ClassGeis
  • ItsAMrY Mar 6 @ 8:24 PM EST
#5thchat A3: Google-docs to facilitate reflection, emotional, and process self-discovery. I call it "Mathacognition." What Ss discover about their own brains and learning processes take precedence over any math they learn in my class.
  • JJ_Burry Mar 6 @ 8:24 PM EST

    • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:16 PM EST

A1 - Modeling, inquiry-based approaches, and PBL. Put students in the driver’s seat, guide them, and watch them take things to a whole new level. #5thchat
  • mrslc_m Mar 6 @ 8:24 PM EST
A3: allowing discovery to happen organically through tech, we can’t force Ss to search (specified, planned out) detailed questions. Give them the tools, model and encourage deep thought, allow them to succeed with autonomy #5thchat
  • bmiller_FSTS Mar 6 @ 8:26 PM EST
Q4: How can we incorporate student choice and voice into these opportunities? #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:26 PM EST

  • jaslyn4ESL Mar 6 @ 8:26 PM EST

  • LindaFarringer Mar 6 @ 8:26 PM EST
A2 - Talk less than your students & let them have the sweat on their brows when they leave your classroom. #5thchat
  • brianfahey61 Mar 6 @ 8:26 PM EST
  • ItsAMrY Mar 6 @ 8:27 PM EST
#5thchat A3: Just taught a class on @snowden. Ss used his tweet to develop Qs, research, and present their discovery. All within a single 2.5 hr block of time. Got great results.
  • yenneam Mar 6 @ 8:27 PM EST
A3 I struggle to answer because I can't narrow it down! Foremost an LMS that becomes our online class community to house resources, discussions, explorations, and collaboration. Without @Schoology or @edmodo , I'd be lost! #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:28 PM EST
I usually wait 4 Ss to ask a question beyond our current discussion/time at the start of the year & introduce/model it then. We usually share out at the end of the week, at the end of the day! #5thchat

  • LindaFarringer Mar 6 @ 8:32 PM EST
A4 - Student motivation & engagement increase when Ss understand the relevance of a skill & when the task is related to their interests. Provide opportunities for practical application & know your Ss interests in & outside of school. #5thchat
  • madlylearning Mar 6 @ 8:32 PM EST
A4: we need to step out of the conversation and ask more questions. Then watch for those moments of sparked interest and be ready to listen and take action. #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:32 PM EST
A4: Let Ss create questions 4 mystery Skype, let Ss determine what 2 create in Makerspace, let Ss pick where 2 go on @googlevr, etc. IT IS OK TO LET GO OF THE REINS! Kids WANT to make decisions, creates genuine investment & interest #5thchat

A3: Google classroom is a great tool I use to manage learning. https://t.co/rXQ8Gg1lxh #5thchat
  • mrsseibel5th - Moderator Mar 6 @ 8:34 PM EST
Passion learning, different ways to present the same topic. I even put my "leveled readers" out each week and let them read what interests them and then we do read and rolls that allows choice in presentation #5thchat
  • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:35 PM EST
And there is NOTHING wrong with paperless versions! But when Ss have a laptop in front of them the capabilities are so far beyond that! Twitter is a great way to find inspiration & platforms to go beyond a paperless worksheet with technology! #5thChat

  • yenneam Mar 6 @ 8:38 PM EST
A5 Model questioning whenever possible! Don't be afraid to show that I'm not the expert, and that questioning means we're thinking more deeply. #5thchat
  • jaslyn4ESL Mar 6 @ 8:38 PM EST
A3) Incorporating technological exploration increases Ss pedagogy, improves higher - level thinking, critical thinking, collaboration, & experiential learning. It’s essential for our ELLs learning new concepts. Increasing comprehensible input & outcomes. #5thchat

  • ItsAMrY Mar 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
#5thchat A6: At the end of the year, create reflective videos about what they learned about THEMSELVES and their learning process in your class. With the intent of sharing those videos with next year's class at the start of school.

  • ClassGeis Mar 6 @ 8:43 PM EST
A5: The more teaching experience I have the better I am at questioning. I ask questions that go beyond yes or no & I also admit when I don’t have all the answers. Utilizing Thinking Routines (Making Thinking Visible by @RonRitchhart) is great resource I utilize as well! #5thchat
  • TatMaylor Mar 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A1 Genius Hour! Help Ss explore and investigate what they are passionate about. I’m at the Elementary level, many of our Ss can’t answer, “What are your interests?”. We’ve got to expose them to as much as we can, encourage to pursue anything that catches their interest #5thchat

  • TatMaylor Mar 6 @ 8:48 PM EST

A7: Twitter is a great one, Ss share what they are learning and link resources, make connections to other Ss #5thchat
  • jaslyn4ESL Mar 6 @ 8:50 PM EST
I love this response. I think it’s OK for us as educators to allow Ss to problem solve on their own &/or collaboratively -w/out our “help,”per se. We need to let them have the opportunity to explore, fail, & succeed on their own...that’s making real world connections. #5thchat
