#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.
Mary from VA. I have moved from teaching 2nd to K starting this fall. :) Excited but nervous. I am looking forward to learning more about Google tonight. For me, I like Google Drive #2ndchat
Hi I'm Amanda from Tuscaloosa, AL. I'm a technology coach and my personal favorite is Google Drive, because I can use all the other apps through it. 😂 #2ndchat
Hey all!! Amber Marshall from Kansas teaching K-5 Technology! My favorite Google App is Slides, but I'm thinking if you ask me this next year it might change to Sheets!! #2ndchat
A1: I love all the ways to use Sheets with Littles. The activities in the book are so creative. I want to create tasks with conditional formatting! #2ndchat
I thought that was so cool too! Think about all 100th day and brainstorming 100 words or brainstorming a list of animals that live in a particular habitat. #2ndchat
Yes @PintoBeanz11 stesses how important manipulates are but also how technology works great with them too. I agree based on my experience as well. #2ndchat
This gives me an idea for a word bank we always do when writing to add words to the whiteboard. Now I mighty brainstorm words in a shared Doc they can have access too. #2ndchat
A1. I definitely want to try "Share your Strategy." I've been working on writing Math curriculum in my district, and can think of lots of places this would work well! Also, I love the sheets activities! #2ndchat
A2: Littles still need all the hands-on experiences but when we add technology to the task, they can share it with others and add reflection to the activity in a new way. #2ndchat
A2: I think it’s healthy blend for this generation of students. Seeing how the physical and digital are connected makes their learning more impactful. That’s why I think things like augmented reality, QR codes, and future inventions will be world changing. #2ndchat
A2P1: I underlined and circled this in the book.. Because I love and teach technology most people think I only want to use technology! Not at all!! It's all about the integration... #2ndchat
A2P2: The benefits of using both is that its a second interaction with the material which means students are going more in depth with the material which usually translates into actually remembering it! #2ndchat
A2 Integrating hands on and technology really helps students move from a concrete model to a representational or even abstract model in an engaging way! #2ndchat
It's only because you've learned how to effortlessly make it a part of your every day! You've reached the point of "What will I do without it?" #2ndchat
I really like the weather graph. We did it for about 4 months but make it a regular thing. I like how there was collaborative sharing of weather data in the book. Maybe also how many books that we read. #2ndchat
A3 Number of teeth lost. Books read, number of days they ate 5 fruits or vegetables. I also love the idea of creating surveys using forms and graphing the results. #2ndchat
A3: We do a routine in our math curriculum called "Pocket Day." The kids count their pockets. We could graph these & then compare 1 week to the next! #2ndchat
A3 #2ndchat I'd like to try the weather graphing. I had a simpler one, but I like the template better! We could graph the weight of our sci. items; #days a penguin hatches, you could have an opinion question each day/would you rather....the list goes on!
Also using the data to show different types of graphs. our MD domain ends getting cut short at the end of the year so spiraling through the year is important. #2ndchat
A4: This is a good place to talk about this graphing activity since it involved LOTS of data analysis. It will be over a few tweets. :) 1 of... #2ndchat
A3: I like the idea of graphing weather (our weather varies a lot here in Kansas!). How many books we've read each week/month, what kind of books we have read. #2ndchat
A4: I had my kids come up with a ? they wanted to know about our school family. They created a short survey w/ Google Forms. Then we went to every grade level to take a sample. I divided the among the classrooms & they polled 2-3 kids. 2 of... #2ndchat
Analyzing data allows students to make predictions, hypothesis, and address variables that can impact results. What if it’s “school Spirit day” does that effect the results or trend we see. Brings it back to real world. #2ndchat
A4: Each day they would analyze how the new sample changed the outcome by looking at the pie chart in Google Forms. When we finished our polls, they took the raw numbers on the pie chart to crate a bar graph. 3 of... #2ndchat
A4: Then we printed the graphs and pie charts with the question and placed them around spots that classes normally stop to wait for lunch or specials so we could all see the results. :) Final tweet on topic :) #2ndchat
A4: It is a great way for them to engage those critical thinking skills! If they start seeing math as patterns early, then I think it will help them when math starts getting more difficult. #2ndchat
I like idea of graphing eco or health topic..fruits anf veggies om our lunch. Then asking if we meeting healthy food guides and sharing that with parents. #2ndchat
Hmm. That's a fascinating answer. Now I wonder that. We had an on going form that would take data for lunch and it would just add the new choices if I forgot to delete out the previous day's data. I bet you could find the version history. #2ndchat
Coming late to the party- I think I want to try keeping a graph of character strengths (perseverance, kindness, bravery, etc.) that we see in book characters from stories we read together. #2ndchat
A5: I really like the Number of the Day. Lots of skills and want incorporate screencasting into their thinking. Plus getting them presenting their ideas on laptop is a starting point to front of the class. #2ndchat
A5: I like the reason with shapes activity on page 100. I like how they have to describe their own inages and thinking with different items they will find. #2ndchat
A5 Also using a spreadsheet for immediate feedback. I really like the share your strategy template- I love the idea of adding slides to share the progression of their thinking. #2ndchat
I love the models and equation spreadsheets on page 91. I think this would be an awesome way to incorporate manipulatives. They can build the number with unifix cubes and then create the number on the spreadsheet. #2ndchat
I also like that "Reason with Shapes" can be adapted to be even more open ended- they can find a picture to partition and explain how they partitioned it. #2ndchat
Q6: What are the benefits of creating activities that give students immediate feedback? What type of learning activities could we create? (page 87-89) #2ndchat
A6 Immediate feedback helps prevent S from continuing to practice incorrectly. Also, while they are engaged in the task, the feedback is much more meaningful! #2ndchat
A7: With immediate feedback misconception can be addressed immediately and no time is wasted. Less frustration for Ss and growth occurs quicker. Ss know exactly how they can improve and how well they understand what they are learning. #2ndchat
A6. Immediate feedback is key. It allows for adjustment iterations and course correction. No would ever learn to walk if you got feedback like teacher give feedback. Either long term or never. #2ndchat
Especially with the Number of the Day. They reasoning they had to use to figure out why it wasn't right and how to adjust their answers to make it right was astonishing! #2ndchat
A6: Although not mentioned in the book I love to use @nearpod for this very reason...immediate feedback with many of features. Already created lessons that I just import into Google Classroom! #2ndchat I've also used @GetKahoot@Socrative before
Well.. I was trying to stay caught up, but bed time routines have been a little more hectic tonight! I'll have to catch up after the babes go to bed! Have a great evening everyone! #2ndchat
Exactly! Like when you're in an orchestra- during rehearsal, the conductor usually stops you to make adjustments along the way. How much time we waste when we keep practicing the wrong thing! #2ndchat
Using Google Tools we can provide written, oral, or video feedback immediately. They can adjust their work while they are doing it. Love the commenting feature. My wife uses FlipGrid to record replies to her students fluencies. #2ndchat
A7 Since I'm currently in a Math mode, I'll add that this template would be great to use with word problems too. What happens in Beginning, middle, end of problems. #2ndchat
AND sequencing is so hard. I did a very simple activity near the end of last year and some of my high ones struggled. I'm doing more work in this this next year.
#2ndchat
A7: I want to try to figure out a way to incorporate sequencing WITH time (especially the idea of AM/PM). I liked the example in the book with getting ready for school...maybe just beef it up a little more to include time. #2ndchat
A7: OH! What if we did this with timelines in Social Studies! @MrsW2nd- what if we used this for our timeline unit we created instead of the paper? #2ndchat
#2ndchat I’m so sorry to have missed tonight’s chat! Can’t wait to see what everyone shared! I’ll try to go back and share via the slow chat. Thanks all for your great ideas! @missmac100
