#octmchat We are the STEMcoding project, involving faculty members from Ohio State and the University of Mt. Union. We develop coding activities for math like this Pi day activity we submitted to @hourofcodehttps://t.co/aNQbgRcEiw
Q1 (see slide for prompt)
"For meaningful learning of mathematics, tools and technology must be indispensable features of the classroom" (NCTM, 2014, p. 78)

My Math 8 studentsā favorite non technology is personal whiteboards and expo markers because they can move around the classroom, and they can see their work better. #OCTMchat@ohioctm
A1: use @Edulastic weekly in class to check for understanding. Ss get 2nd chance for corrections. Easy for me to keep track of their work. Also @plickers@quizizz & introduced @Flipgrid today. #OCTMchat

A1: I've been hanging out in a lot of elementary buildings lately and there's a lot of Base Ten Blocks... I'm SO jealous of the conceptual understanding today's students have in today's classrooms #OCTMchat

A1 We love number talks and fraction splats! For me, I love hearing the conversations students are having about the way they think about math. Students love making connections to others thinking and being actively engaged. #OCTMchat

A1: Some of students favorite tools are the hands-on manipulatives like ten frames, 100 chart, rekenrek beads, cuisenaire rods. A new favorite virtual manipulative tools I found & have shared with Ts/Ss is https://t.co/OvrP2KS3KW#OCTMchat
#octmchat A1 We use a web-based code editor @p5xjs that includes a number of accessibility features for the visually impaired. It works great on pretty much any computer you can get your hands on.

#octmchat A2 computer simulations have become an important part of the day-to-day work of scientists and engineers. Developing a familiarity with how coding relates to STEM concepts (not just CS for its own sake) is important for their future careers.
A2: Using tools are key for Ss to explore and see relationships. It also provides them the opportunity to be hands-on to "build" their understanding. Ultimately, it engages Ss and helps to make their thinking visual to others. #OCTMchat
A1: Ss sometimes need that visual to āseeā math at work. Technology provides a different platform to show what they know & sometimes more engaging than paper/pencil #OCTMchat
A2 Skype or other video chatting can help connect students to people outside the classroom. Some of my students Skyped with a mathematician last year and it was awesome. #octmchat
A2: The benefits for students to use a range of tools and technology allows them to connect and explore concepts. The visuals, manipulatives, etc. engages my students to recall especially when we started using symbols. (Ex. Algebra Tilesā> solving equations) #OCTMchat@ohioctm
Q3.... "Research suggests that about 2/3 of HS Jr. and Sr. are still functioning at a concrete level of thinking" (Orlich 2000)
So... why might some teachers NOT integrate tools and technology? (see slide for prompt)

A2: I think when they use tools they are more Willingboro try and explore. When putting ideas on paper I feel they are more concerned with being right. It is more permanent. #octmchat
A3 - maybe because math teaching is limited to producing correct answers and doing it using someone elseās thinking. We push through curriculum always with an answer in mind. Instead play mathematically and tools and tech will be valued. #OCTMchat
A3: The biggest reason I think Ts don't use concrete tools & teach/model math thinking is that manipulatives are viewed as primary/elementary. There is such a push to move from the concrete to the abstract...algorithms. But, the concrete illustrates the abstract. #OCTMchat

A3: Honestly, I think a lot of teachers do not use some tools and technology because they do not know HOW to use it or do not feel comfortable using it. There are some things that I am still learning/ exploring to help Ss use them correctly. #OCTMchat@ohioctm
A3. I often hear that many colleges do not allow students to use calculators. Does this mean that students should not use technology in high school? Or that colleges should change their ways? #octmchat

They do provide professional development and the curriculum director works with me (knowledgeable guy!) Also I experiment to see what works and what doesnāt work for future lessons! #OCTMchat@ohioctm

A3 I think, some get comfortable doing what they have always done. Some are nervous to try technology and some will claim it takes too much time. #OCTMchat
