Hiya, #sunchat. I'm Brian. I teach MS students English in CO. I'm edugrateful for language's endless power to mint new coinages. At same time, I'm edufrustrated by relentless coining of new jargon, acronyms & initialisms.
I can never understand why this happens so often. What is wrong with reaching out to others to get input? Lack of confidence in ability? I don't know why... #sunchat
This is such an important topic... last minute changes can throw off teachers + students in a big way! Not productive or healthy for anyone. communication is key! #sunchat
A1 - Edufrustration? The prevalence of edumyths in PD and in the classroom.
Myths = learning styles, the learning pyramid, left/right brain stuff, etc.
https://t.co/6zkGq5cZxo#sunchat
I've seen this. Once they took away several of our state social studies tests, the amount of time spent on it (by admin, downtown leadership, spec ed department..) changed drastically. Reveals bigger issue: why are we still teaching subjects in isolation? #sunchat
Social Studies is such a match with ELA - lots of stories, the need to comprehend - not sure why it's not valued. We need to move away from vertical subjects and look at them as horizontal. #sunchat
This is so true. Every school should have staff trained in multisensory systemic reading progs like Orton-Gillingham, but vast majority do not. I'm trained, but my school doesn t have the corresponding curriculum!!
The problem I kep seeing is that the admins do not stop & think about effect on Ts. If we start with question “how can I best support my Ts in their classroom” then whole mindshift changes #sunchat

#Edufrustration is the failure to adapt and change. The world is moving fast around us and we have to be more nimble in response when it comes to instruction and Ss. #sunchat
YES! YES! YES! I just wrote a huge paper on this for my Ph.D program. Pay attention to the money. Anyone who doesn't acknowledge the BUSINESS of education will easily be misled by the many companies selling "snake oil" to solve its biggest issues. #sunchat

My edufrustrations are when Ts don’t realize the importance of relationships and when Ss are defined by their grades instead of who they are as ppl. #sunchat

Exactly. And schools/districts see this shiny and pretty new 'toy' that will completely change everything and be the answer...but no...there's no real data/research to back up the claims.

An edufrustration I have comes in the lack of time we have to gain real depth in the initiatives that our Teacher leaders and S’s see as most important! #sunchat
International Search for Future Leaders - Global Youth Leadership for Grades 6 -12 --Cohort 2018 at Brandon Hall School Summer Programs - Applications here for June and July: https://t.co/fkcBxoEYT6#nbtchat#sunchat
My edufrustrations are when Ts don’t realize the importance of relationships and when Ss are defined by their grades instead of who they are as ppl. #sunchat
#edufrustration is the reliance & focus on grades & test scores and not the learning & growth Ss are showing. Ss are not standard- learning, growth, successes all look different for different Ss. Learning has no expiration date or a set number assigned to it #sunchat
Or time isn’t spent to really discover whether it will/is working. Just because it looks or sounds good for the district to do it, doesn’t mean it’s really beneficial #sunchat
#edufrustration is everyone saying they want to make big changes in education, when in reality they can barely wrap their heads around small tweaks. #sunchat
I get edufrustrated when middle schools are lumped in with high schools -- MS students are definitely their own distinct group. I was super edugrateful to be able to attend the #AMLE2017 conference and to focus in our our group of students #sunchat
I would be #edugrateful if you would consider donating a dollar or two to my effort to create Literally the Best Literacy room for my much deserved teachers and students. That's right...I'm not to proud to grovel to my #sunchat#PLN.
https://t.co/oHUBdoWMX2
Consoling Ss that are telling me they are dumb because of bad test grades, that’s an #edufrustration because tests are not the only way to demonstrate learning. #sunchat
#Edugrateful for those around me who come every day ready to move forward, be vulnerable, and make relationships. The teacher in the room is not nearly as important as the heart in the teacher. #sunchat
Edufrustration is there are so many amazing tech tools that I want to use but I need to prioritize. Our district has grants that I am edugrateful for and will be applying for soon! #sunchat

#edugrateful for all those who have made me stronger in my PLN, bith in person and digitally.
You know who you are. You might not realize your impact, but it's tangible to me.

There’s so much judgment & self-judgment among parents—and teachers. The best approach I know is compassion and self-compassion. This is the hardest work there is. Let’s be in it together.
I'm a little edufrustrated that even after 4 years of high school, many students still graduate unprepared for life and for college. That's insane considering at least 1/4 of our life is spent in school. However, I'm edugrateful that I can help change that. #sunchat
#Edugrateful for our accomplished, devoted pre-service Ts who will enter the profession well-prepared. Also grateful for the Ts & faculty who prepare them. #sunchat
I does seem like the trend is to increase time in ELA and math for the test scores to go up. But what about reading in the content area? Or math in science? I wish people would see there is a connection between subjects that can help not only on a test, but in life. #sunchat
Yes, the amount of tech tools out there can be overwhelming! Helps to use something like TPACK to determine which ones to use https://t.co/5m3WhCgAY6#sunchat
Edufrustration is there are so many amazing tech tools that I want to use but I need to prioritize. Our district has grants that I am edugrateful for and will be applying for soon! #sunchat
Crossing my fingers that I will be there in 2018. Was so amazing to not dig through the sessions looking for MS content! So many really great sessions and ideas #sunchat
Because they are tested subjects... But funny how many of the texts students read on the test prep are history based. *smacks side of head*. Connections, anyone?? Bueller? Bueller? #sunchat
Grateful for the great equalizer that is twitter...I am in conversation daily with educators and researchers about the craft of education...keeps me motivated and curious. #sunchat

I’m sure you argue that social studies requires literacy and involves math in understanding time relationships and survey data. Can you foist yourself on math or ELA dept to combine their work w yours? ELA paper based on history? #sunchat
I’m Edugrateful for a responsive leadership team. Our district experienced a horrible trauma this year and our response to healing has been superlative! #sunchat
My #edufrustration is when early elementary K-2 is not seen as a priority in the larger field of education. I'm #Edugrateful for developing my #PLN with educators on #sunchat
Big theme this week at school. WE have to Tell the Story. #sunchat When a S moves 2 grade levels but is not on grade level #YET that is something to celebrate that the test does not show.
"The great equalizer of twitter..." I'm writing an article about how twitter might be one of the most valid spaces for real authentic learning...mind if I steal this quote? #sunchat

The House tax plan would bar "all but the wealthiest students from pursuing a Ph.D.," and thereby "decimate American competitiveness." https://t.co/ZOb3MEkPpM
'Test' as a term that amounts to its own edu jargon? Cup of inquiry-driven problem- or project-based learning runneth over with non-standardized tests! #sunchat
I'm new to Twitter and #sunchat but I'm seeing how quickly I can become a part of a network of educators! Definitely #Edugrateful for this great equalizer!
Prioritize to those tools that help students in their goals and create a more efficient and/or effective environment. The rest is fluff and should be avoided. The SAMR model can help you. #sunchat
Right! I want to help my Ss discover their strengths and teach actual real world skills. It seems like I have to squeeze that into the content. #sunchat
I’m coming from an elementary perspective where I often don’t see that kind of teach to the test mentality in writing. More the readers/writers workshopping model, personal narrative, pursuasive pieces, etc. #sunchat
Definitely has had a huge impact on me professionally -- I feel much more in touch with my profession. Also find it rejuvenating to participate in chats! #sunchat
This create the #edufrustration that there is not enough (any?) interdisciplinary connections / projects / papers. Our students need to make these connections. #sunchat
We all can learn from one another on Twitter regardless of role. We should do that everywhere, but somehow it happens naturally here. #LoveTwitter#sunchat
Grateful for the great equalizer that is twitter...I am in conversation daily with educators and researchers about the craft of education...keeps me motivated and curious. #sunchat
I would say an edufrustration is the perception that nothing gets done to address instances of disrespect & bullying partnered w/ the lack of awareness of students’ protections by law. It’s mind numbing. #sunchat
Difficult to do when Students move from classroom to classroom, delineating subjects. #sunchat Something we all need to work on in our classrooms. Blur the lines for them.

Very, very honored to be this year's recipient of the Alice Garside Award from @DyslexiaMA together with John Gabrieli. Please join us for a celebration on December 1st 2017. https://t.co/6vADBtFMzy

I’m edugrateful for T’s who are in constant search of ways to take S’s learning beyond the book and make their learning a whole child experience. #sunchat
I do believe Susan has just pointed the way to an Uncommon Core. One example hinting at melding, though still beholden in part to subject area: https://t.co/jIVy1Vl9gP#sunchat
True! Time to ditch the factory model. Standardized tests and grades continue to make it seem like our best choice. And higher ed needs to change too. #sunchat
Started by doing a couple twitter chats during building PD time. Picked an article related to our focus then discussed while learning the formats for a chat -- can be scary to jump in at first #sunchat

I can always come down and help you out, Carla..... *runs to book the flight back to Cabarete*... lol #sunchat Yes - if anyone can do it, you will, and it will be a great success! @carlameyrink
I hope all my fellow #sunchat participants have a relaxing thanksgiving week. You all deserve it!! Go ahead and eat that second piece of pie. Don’t even question it.
Working w #STEM Ts to have 9th grade Ss do science experiment and mini-research paper. I teach research, she does science, ELA teaches writing. All 3 grade/ review 1 paper. #sunchat#interdisciplinary
I’m edugrateful that twitter has helped me find professionals who share and support ideas without concern for who gets credit- just what’s best for students. That’s often not the case in the workplace. #sunchat
My eduhope is that we make more people aware of the power and value of humanities--not just so that our kids can get meaningful good jobs when they enter into the world, but that they can help create a humane world when they arrive. #sunchat
Most of all I am #edugrateful for #sunchat. Amazing how much I have learned from you all, and how much you have changed my educational practices for the better. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Never stepped foot into #sunchat before. But I'd tread with appropriate caution but will say something Extremely Critical and/or Unexpected if necessary.
Another reason Twitter has value for me: serendipitous colliding of ideas/conversations. Check out this relevant tidbit, #sunchat, that just crossed my feed...
Absolutely! I love that twitter isn't about being competitive with other educators, but just being collaborative. I'm edugrateful about my colleagues who are super collaborative and then my PLN too! #sunchat
My edufrustration is the push to continually drag students through content that they are not academically or developmentally ready for because "it's on the test", which leads to misbehavior & disengagement. #sunchat
I think my Ts would be on board. They work on multi-disciplinary projects as often as they can. This would make it easier for them. #sunchat And collaborating would be great!
I am #Edugrateful for all of the fine folks I have been able to connect with. You all have inspired me and helped boost my teaching and career. #sunchat
I’m edugrateful that twitter has helped me find professionals who share and support ideas without concern for who gets credit- just what’s best for students. That’s often not the case in the workplace. #sunchat
That’s fantastic! I was just reading your blog. Great stuff! And on collaborating...let me know. We are working on a personalized learning initiative in my district. This fits right in! #sunchat
Not to mention, Amy, that Carla is in the Dominican Republic, so that includes BEACH TIME! lol - She is going to hire all of us eventually to work at her school. #sunchat
My org @_Continuum did some work w/@BostonCollege on their core curriculum. Ts didn't like teaching it. Ss didn't love taking it. We paired V. Different profs (poetry, say, and chemistry) and had them team teach Complex Problems or Enduring Questions. Melding in action! #sunchat

Which proves the point - they see walls, we need to break them down. #sunchat@shirky17 Seems our work is cut out for us. We need to embrace all disciplines in our classrooms. #sunchat
Also, I am #Edugrateful for the former students who come back to visit and tell me all the great things they are doing. That means more than I can explain in one tweet. It’s easy to lose sight of your impact in the moment, these visits help keep us going. #sunchat
Happy coffee, #sunchat. My edufrustration is simple:
there remains a persistent and counterproductive belief
that teachers can not--
and often should not-- lead innovation in ed tech.
It may be the most significant drag on growth in our school systems.
I’m #edugrateful when a T, who is struggling with a student, works with me to support this child. The child appreciates it as well. Be humble and use your specialists. #sunchat
Your description of such conduits for creativity remind me of William Burrough's cut-ups: mashing seemingly unconnected elements together to see what emerges. https://t.co/WqRBG61wxs#sunchat

I’m edufrustrated that in my world (Title I education) social promotion and retention continue to be the two-headed dragon standardized testing forces us to battle annually. #sunchat
Brave people--a group that might include artists, teachers, students, and businesses folk--see improvisation not as a threat but as an invigorating opportunity to do something great. #sunchat
In reply to
@brianrozinsky, @_Continuum, @BostonCollege
When I have a student that is struggling and what I’m doing is not working, I ask for help. There is no shame in doing this. We are smarter and more effective together. #edchat#sunchat
I couldn't agree more. Why is there not a greater focus on developing informed and productive members of society? No matter what profession SS go into in the future being a contributing member of society is important and social studies teaches that #sunchat
Indeed! This is dishonesty to ourselves and to our students. Our target should be novelty residing at the top of the pyramid #edchatMENA#edchat#sunchat
Hell yes, and: If improv is one something people in their 20s do for inexpensive fun in a cheaper section of the city... we're in trouble. It should be everywhere. Available to everyone. #sunchat
