-
Don Jacobs, OC Batavia HS (OH) Wing-T forever!
-
wade stewart Kennesaw Mtn high school secondary coach, Kennesaw GA.
-
a little over the top with that intro, but generally a good guy.
-
A1: Screens/gifts and stick concept
-
A1: if I had my druthers it would be slants or seams. Maybe a quick hitch or spot. That's about it
-
A1- bubble, stick, seam, takeoff but wanting to learn more.
-
Ryan Riggan head coach- Union pines high school Cameron, NC
-
A1: bubbles, dead screens, and tunnel screens go in day one. One WR option post snap for the first day.
-
A1: what I've seen on D side of ball, bubbles, seen stick concepts. Also "money" plays, reading BS LB. Snag route behind him
-
Snag, Fin, Stick on the overhangs, very or pops on inside guys.
-
A1: We mostly use quick hitters like bubbles and beaters going where the backers are not
-
should've added Karaoke Specialist
-
A1: slant/flat concept..bubble screens...screens and TO's...tunnel https://t.co/aoUx685cI2
-
-
Q1: What route concepts do you pair with your run-game when installing RPOs into your offense?
-
A1- generally we will pair hitch, bubble and vertical routes. Depends on game planning who we want to exposed based on D
-
make sure you end each tweet with the hashtag for all to see
-
-
A1: Always a 1 high beater for the gift; pick, slant, hitch. Post for quarters. Then typically slants, smokes, keys, and seams.
-
Bubble
Slant, bubble
Hitches
Go
Skinny Post, Go (stacked WR)
https://t.co/1uRMWILoWA
-
-
Q1: What route concepts do you pair with your run-game when installing RPOs into your offense?
-
A1) any play from your qk or sprint game menu you that you can execute at a high proficiency level
-
-
Don't have the stones to throw the bang 8 post behind weak side overhang to single side.
-
A2: following days are quick game with vert/bubble, slant/bubble, out/vert, 4 verts, comebacks, hitches, really any quick game
-
Bubble and hitch/slant/fade depending on coverage
-
A1: So far I've only done hitch/sluggo, and cross/post/corner/out beside the normal screens of quick or bubble
-
A1 Quick/Bubble screens, Stick/Draw
-
don't give Coach Coe any extra info, he beat me like I stole something this year.
-
Jack Dingus, OL/LB Coach, Crooked Oak HS, Oklahoma City, OK
-
A1 - Bubbles, nows, slants, 4 vert, whip dig, smash, stick, Y cross
-
A1: "Money" concept. Blocking BS DE man with BS T, and reading BS LB, having slot or TE run snag behind him.
-
I'm an RPO novice. Now, my ONLY concept is SL Bubble with SE blocking BS off runs. Future plans? Hmmm. https://t.co/ZStvoy7Hn6
-
-
Q1: What route concepts do you pair with your run-game when installing RPOs into your offense?
-
A1: We run RPO in Load & Speed option schemes & they are tied with routes that take advantage of how opp. is defending option
-
glad you enjoy it! Jump on in! Its good practice to go over what you know while learning what others do
-
A1: our O runs bubble to 1 side, & pop screen to other, but slant route behind LB is really tough to defend.
-
A1: pivot/ stutter slant combo for man coverage
-
grew up on Long Island and played at St John's 91-94. Good friends with Chimienti.
-
Power run game with quick game i.e. Bubbles & quick hitches
-
we use hitch and bubble concept play side
-
Did the term RPO exist 2 years ago?! https://t.co/Z3KWDTtnx3
-
-
Q1: What route concepts do you pair with your run-game when installing RPOs into your offense?
-
We like to read outside backer on sweep w seam or curl, or read middle backer on inside zone or trap with space or slant route
-
Do you tag your routes depending on how the D defends?
-
A1:
Bubbles/Key screens
Stick concept
Slant/flat
-
A1: really have enjoyed adding qk game, vertical/post shots into our RPOs, my fav is bubble by 3, vertical by 2, block with 1
-
A1:We like to read outside backer on sweep w seam or curl, or read middle backer on inside zone or trap with space route
-
I would love to see the research on that
-
A1 we practice grass routes consistently on all BS run plays
-
A1: stick, snag, slant, bubble, and fast screen.
-
A1: Bubble, smoke, and flood
-
NO it has been around for ever just like 46 D is old Wide Tackle 6. New generation new term new gimmink
-
A1: Really like to attack downfield on RPO's. Can get the ball to quick screens on basic triple option zone reads, not RPO's.
-
Is smoke a concept or a specific route?
-
Seams, stick, slants, hitches, whips, outs/arrows
-
John Mitchell Oline coach Midwest City High School Midwest City, Oklahoma. Sorry I am late guys, please continue, I insist!!!!!
-
A1 all of our base run plays are tagged with combo or screen routes Ex: PowerRt Bubble
-
Awesome start! Q2 on the way
-
Awesome start! Q2 on the way
-
Agree with coach to me. Zone and Key Screen's aren't RPO's that's just normal triple option https://t.co/9il4EqC0c3
-
-
A1: Really like to attack downfield on RPO's. Can get the ball to quick screens on basic triple option zone reads, not RPO's.
-
-
A1: 3 types - peri screens. 2RB reading per def - hitch-seam, slant-bub, fade-arrow. 1RB reading box def - stick, TE dump, pop
-

A1: 2 types - 2RB reading apex def - hitch-seam, slant-bubble, fade-out & 1RB reading box def - stick, TE dump, slant-under
-
Offensive world.. Defense just lives in it
-
A2: Pre-snap gift always 1st. Defensive ID is a major conversation in QB meetings weekly. QB must ID D to find post snap read.
-
A2: Read single side 1st. If have it, throw it. If not, never look back. Then look to bubble side. Check leverage.Throw if there
-
basically a quick screen to the outside wide receiver. Opposite our bubble look.
-
A2: Everything we do is GIFT,ACTION,REACTION. 1on1 we want that. Action=concept reaction=concept closed https://t.co/mLau03gKn4
-
-
Q2: How do you teach QB read progression for your RPOs?
-
-
A2: depends on coverage but it's movement key..then the ball must be out or a give https://t.co/AJRnl2BgQQ
-
-
Q2: How do you teach QB read progression for your RPOs?
-
that's crapMike has to play run only stop to that is Safety playing Man, or a 6 Tech not letting TE off the line
-
A2- we will call designed RPOs which we have presnap read and we will also tag base plays to PA read the defender in post snap
-
A2: If not there, go to run read. Give/pull. If pull, run to landmark, keeping eye on safety. Still can throw it off to bubble
-
Whatever defensive is in QB ID is the key. talk alot about defender committing to the box. We define that by eye and feet in box
-
A1: we have some base concepts, but RPO is best when you build concepts that attack each week's D tendencies...
-
A1 if we don't tag a pass to a run play we have basic backside grass routes according to the defensive alignments
-
Love this! Coach, do you mind going over the diagram a little more?
-
A2: QB keys 1 def, either box or perimeter. Give QB movement keys. Always right if he hands the ball off.
-
A2: We teach eyes to the read once we mesh. Just like zone read. We start off by teaching QB to read first step of defender cont
-
A2: Gift 1st. Box count 2nd. 2nd or 3rd level primary 3rd. 2nd or 3rd level secondary 4th.
-
A2cont: we try to vary between reading weak d players we want to expose and certain zones on the field
-
Coach what is "gift" https://t.co/WqIxCPKsJJ
-
-
A2: Pre-snap gift always 1st. Defensive ID is a major conversation in QB meetings weekly. QB must ID D to find post snap read.
-
Tempo world, RPO'S and runs have access throws backside. Numbers don't equate take the gift.
-
A2 almost always backside or frontside linebacker based on what run is being used for the RPO. Keep it simple.
-
A2 cont. After that we advance read into our 3rd level concepts.
-
A2: Our QB has too know our option game & understand how perimeter play against it is going dictate what passes will there
-
A2 depends on where the def. alignment are at, it's a numbers game. If they move out LB's to cover bubble power will b there
-
QB is taught to take what the defense gives him pre-snap, post-snap try to make it easy, we read grass if unsure hand it off
-
Q2: We always teach
1. give unless
2.if pull qb run unless
3.last thing throw late bubble
-
A2: I coach D, but to me it either has to be presnap, or read an LB or Safety & make him wrong.
-
Bret Schnieber, Offensive Coordinator at Mariemont HS in Cincinnati, OH.
-
Bret Schnieber, Offensive Coordinator at Mariemont HS in Cincinnati, OH.
-
A2 the QB must be able to count the defenders to see where the we can take advantage of the defensive formation
-
A2: we like to keep it simple and keep our route combos and pass progressions same on RPOs as base pass plays. Less thinking
-
THE "TRIGGER" is who we are manipulating if trigger rund with rpo q run to grass plays you throw manip..
-
A2: I apparently couldn't, hopefully will get to try again this year.
-
This is for Coach Osovet's A2 diagram posted https://t.co/3tV74P3qdd
-
-
sure....
Pull read is whomever your "GIVE" key is regardless of run concept ie, dart, trey read, .in the digram its the DE
-
A1: It depends what we see on film on what we try to exploit from the defense. If the D gives us bubbles we take it.
-
A2 we teach QB gifts. Ex: if a corner is 7 yds off and a slant is tagged we take the gift the corner gives us
-
built in route to the backside of a concept to take vs. certain coverages.
-
A2: If they give him a gift, take it. Then is mostly triple option. primary & secondary run reads.
-
A2 cont. then we drill it like USMC does in periods after conditioning they have to preform under duress. we cond 1st in pract
-
always tell q off of a pull attack alley......do a double ball drill everyday to wotk this technique for qb!!!! its a must!!!!
-
A2: Big QB point for us is if you make a mistake make it on the run give. Safe rule, can cause over conservative QB though.
-
A2: Have single WR win route QB can take. That's key to RPOs. Must command dbl. Opens up box for run and front-side RPO concept
-
-
Very nice work...Q3 up next
-
Very nice work...Q3 up next
-
A2 we tag a quick route across the board to all WRs onto the run. If the pass is there PRESNAP, we pitch/catch. If not, give it
-
NICE! So you're running drills similar to dive option teams
-
A2- "Read" defender commits to run"heels of DL" , pull and throw.
-
A2 We teach it just like our run read except we change the read key...mesh w/RB work run reads...mesh w/WR & RB work 2nd level
-
Does anyone else use R4 system? Trying to adapt QB progressions to RPOs - capped vs. uncapped, collision, cushion
-
Q3: Do you teach the WR routes separate from the QB read or are they combined during an option segment?
-
A2- Give read, still must carry out fake to freeze "read" defender
-
Q3: Do you teach the WR routes separate from the QB read or are they combined during an option segment?
-
Brian Milan DC Bearden High School
-
A2: Our QB is taught to look rhythm, read, rush in our RPO pass system.
-
-
nice...that's kind of our beater route...no stem on the slant, just work inside on an angle
-
as a defensive guy if I make your QB think/guess I win...
-
A2: We have him read a player we want to be put in conflict and he will give the ball or throw it based on what he does
-
combined during run-game segment! We want everyone on the same page
-
A3: would like to teach them separate with their own code names then just tag them together during team time.
-
A3: teach it separate first and then during a period we will come together and drill it https://t.co/YBwXGfNfHg
-
-
Q3: Do you teach the WR routes separate from the QB read or are they combined during an option segment?
-
Exactly, and that's what we call a "gift". All RPO's, to me again, must have a "gift".
-
A1 Pair perimeter runs with a route that stresses alley/force defender (usually seam route), pair interior runs w/hitch or slant
-
A3: we teach them together. Getting everyone on the same page is the most crucial part of making proper decisions
-
A2: I believe that single route concepts should be taught first. Then progress. Teaching gift and uncovered.
-
Coach, could you explain capped vs uncapped, collision, cushion?
-
do you have multiple RPO route concepts? If so how many?
-
A3 we split the defense in half during team pass. Let 2 QB's practice mesh fake and throw. Gives all skill guys more reps
-
A3: as a Veer Option (dinosaur offense) our Bones period is as much option as it is RPOs we blend it cuz it is more game like
-
A2: Count Numbers, match ups, leverage.
-
COMBINE AL ASPECTS OF
rb/qb mesh then rpo for 10 min every day with our DBL BALL DRILL on tape
1ST-ball qb /rb mesh
2nd- Rpo
-
I'm a defensive guy... What defenses give your RPO's he most trouble ?
-
A3: You have to do both. Work the WRs to find open space then together in a group period giving the QB dif reads.
-
A3 We teach these concepts in Indy time, as well as group
-
A3)routes are generally parts of other passing game concepts we have already taught. Work QB reads spectate first.
-
A3: route are taught just as true quick game. They are then tagged into the RPO game. RPO period everyday in practice
-
A3: Our rpo routes are just normal concepts. No need 4 adjustments. Keeps it simple for kids. QB is gonna make everybody right.
-
A3: combined during run-game segment! We want everyone on the same page
-
I like the step by step framework! Build up confidence with simplicity! https://t.co/Uvm28jRnyq
-
-
A2: I believe that single route concepts should be taught first. Then progress. Teaching gift and uncovered.
-
During RPO period routes are worked in combo with RPO game with coaches dictating where ball should go.
-
A3: All 1 word. Linemen, Wide Receivers, RB's, QB's, TE's all know it by that one word. We drill them that way too. RPO Period.
-
Everybody has to be on the same page! https://t.co/CzUYtk53AF
-
-
A3: we teach them together. Getting everyone on the same page is the most crucial part of making proper decisions
-
Everybody has to be on the same page! https://t.co/QjZjFgvwdZ
-
-
A3: we teach them together. Getting everyone on the same page is the most crucial part of making proper decisions
-
Meant QB reads separate in Indy period first.
-
TREAT the RPO game like INSIDE RUN , SKELLY etc.....COMMITT AND DEVOTE PERIODS TO IT IF YOU WANNA BE GREAT AT IT!
-
A3: Separate. after install. Don't over coach it. It's real easy. FIND GRASS https://t.co/JAUAEoAfW2
-
-
Q3: Do you teach the WR routes separate from the QB read or are they combined during an option segment?
-
A3: my thought is teach it as a whole, rep it in segments to improve each segment
-
A2: met with coach who has ride or flash read for QB. Ride to activate if outside B, expect to flash mesh if inside.
-
A3 We install together in routes on air. Nothing different for WR. QB makes read presnap so he will catch/throw just like ROA.
-
We use any of our route concepts. nothing is just for RPO. https://t.co/gyGrYjlYda
-
-
do you have multiple RPO route concepts? If so how many?
-
A3 these concepts would be taught during Indy time and coached up more during 7v7 as well as team
-
Right now we have 3, I believe...we incorporate bubble, beater, and slant...beater is probably the most popular
-
this situation as a stand alone route it is CB giving space auto to post/curl post snap read FS down hill on power.
-
A3:All of our RPO routes are their own passing concept in quick game. We teach WRs the routes first. Ball needs to come outfast
-
A3: We work it in group and then drill it separately before working it live.
-
capped/uncapped = def > 7 yd in vert area. Ex - 2Hi = seams are capped, middle & corners uncapped
-
A3; cont. we feel it is important to hear 1 voice in describing strategy & reads OC runs while position coaches fine tune fund
-
coach you missed defending RPO's two weeks ago!
-
fish is the o-line guy all he knows is there is a run element his guys have to block.
-
A3: cont When we teach RPO as a group the first time is 7 on 7. Keeps backers honest.
-
-
-
A3: WRs are taught who the QB is reading & where D will be in film & during Indy the we rep it live in a RPO period in practice
-
Y'all are sharing some great info! Q4 is coming up
-
Y'all are sharing some great info! Q4 is coming up
-
A3: I don't want my linemen to know their is a pass tag. Sell the run everytime.
-
A3 just remember a 4yd quick pass is the same yardage as a 4 yd run. Let your kids do what is easier. If box is loaded throw
-
A1: 4 Verts b/c were about lighting up the board & the state book. Aces
-
hahaha! its funny because its about 75% true...I've learned more passing game this year than ever
-
Q4: If the OL knows an RPO is called, explain how you practice their progression to the 2nd level.
-
Q4: If the OL knows an RPO is called, explain how you practice their progression to the 2nd level.
-
This is how I treat it as well. I don't give my wr's options, that keeps us on the same page https://t.co/WMhXJDC8u5
-
-
A3: Our rpo routes are just normal concepts. No need 4 adjustments. Keeps it simple for kids. QB is gonna make everybody right.
-
A1: 4 Verts b/c were about lighting up the board & the stat book. Aces
-
I can't believe people get paid hundreds of thousands or millions to do this stuff. Love it
-
A3: Teach whole-part-whole. Teach whole concept on whiteboard. In prac WR routes, OL run play, QB reads, Put together in team
-
-
-
A3: teach all routes as concepts then any route can be tagged to a RPO. Gives you endless post snap options in game.
-
A4: That's my question, too. I'm tired of getting hit with a penality because my dudes are at the second level right now
-
A3: 7on7 is great way to teach QB reads, WR routes before combining whole concept in team period
-
we hand it off when backers bail in 7 on 7.
-
A4: OL has to get it. First letter of RPO is R for RUN!! If the ball is thrown then it comes out quick so no OL down field
-
our RPO is labeled as a run so even if the qb decides to pass, it's a quick hitter and treated as a run
-
A4 Our oline is taught it is always a run when a run is called. They will block run called. Skill guys make the magic happen.
-
A4) our oline HAS NO CLUE whats happening on peremiter, nor should they "ABOVE THEIR PAY GRADE"!!!!
MAKE THEM DO THEIR JOB!
-
A4: do they block any different, remember, I coach D, they're always downfield on RPO's
-
A4: Pullers were the only ones supposed to be downfield on our RPO and ball should have been out before they get downfield.
-
A4: I don't if the official throws a flag I smile :) https://t.co/xeHuNFszYP
-
-
Q4: If the OL knows an RPO is called, explain how you practice their progression to the 2nd level.
-
A4: the less they know the better
-
They don't, I want them always blocking the same so they give the exact look whether it's run or pass.
-
A4: we don't tell our OL it's an RPO, it reads as a run on their card, we do that so we get the same movement/intensity as a run
-
I can't tell you guys how valuable this info is for a recent grad. Thank you guys so much!
-
A4: we have to make a decision & get it off OL are blocking outside veer, we will not slow down or make passive
-
I build in zone & counter to my defensive 7 on 7 script, don't want my guys playing the drill
-
A4: We don't change up front. Run has to be the priority. If you can't run the ball you are to easy to defend.
-
-
A4: I teach our kids with our IZ/OZ 2 always look 2 dbl and climb 2 2nd level. I always tell them 2 play with their eyes& feet.
-
A4: Best way is to make the read so fast that the ball is given or thrown before the Oline has a chance to get downfield
-
A4: the OL has no idea. Had 2 penalties called in 2 years. We don't worry about it.
-
Tonight's chat is moving fast with TONS of info! If you miss something you can read up on https://t.co/f5lk6qYuf8 in the archive
-
Tonight's chat is moving fast with TONS of info! If you miss something you can read up on https://t.co/XgzamrZuxR in the archive
-
A4)our oline only knows the run action called. It's QBS job to get it out in time so we are not downfield.
-
When we call counter Bubble LBs bite every time on lineman and sniffer crossing the formation. It's a go to on 3 and medium
-
A4: when throwing qk gm the OL, imo, must know to slow their climb to the 2nd level. Attack 2nd level if they attack the LOS.
-
A4 OL/RB runs the run play, WR's run the pass play, QB makes the read/choice
-
just know that I'm eating homemade enchiladas and learning football. Don't get much better
-
A4: OL does not know. Only got called once all yr. QB's fault on that play, missed window and had to wait for next 1 to open
-

I can't tell you guys how valuable this info is for a recent grad. Thank you guys so much!
-
absolutely Coach! Would love to!
-
A4: in reality though we force the ref to call it before we adjust in game. We practice slowing climb in case we have to adjust
-
A4: what they don't know, won't hurt them. They need to block the run and that's all they should worry about
-
A4: Offensive guys encouraging cheating OL to move down field.
-
then rep those adjustments like it's going out of style.
-
A4: we do not like the word progression (slow) in veer attack, we make OL physical & fast.Skill know the read & rule
-
A4: vs. an odd front, uncovered guards count to 1.5 one thousand b4 they go to the next level.
Be patient on combos vs. Even

Oline is on a need to know basis. I don't mention RPO to them at all.
-
A3: OL runs the run play called aggressively. Can't remember being called downfield. https://t.co/fFowQfCQ0a
-
-
Q4: If the OL knows an RPO is called, explain how you practice their progression to the 2nd level.
-
So your OL knows...how do you teach patience to them?
-
Bottom line all the players need to and things will take care of itself

Great work tonight! The last Q of the night is up next

make it a chinese fire drill for the zebras!!!!
-
have me wanting to visit Texas!
-
A4: Almost seems like if it is a deeper concept you need to adjust your run call to ensure it is slower developing.
-
Q5: Which part of the RPO is the most difficult to install and what coaching points do you have to help correct it?
-
Q5: Which part of the RPO is the most difficult to install and what coaching points do you have to help correct it?
-
all they need to know is it's a run.
-
Teach to get as many dbl teams as possible, don't commit LB until he commits , engaged OL rarely get called downfield

Forgot to introduce myself earlier, Mathew Bennett, Boiling Springs HS, Boiling Springs SC

RPOs are causing the lineman down field rule to become obsolete because everything happens so fast
-
-
-
A4: In our RPO system the Oline will block everything as a run unless they get pass pro calls for drop back or quick pass game.
-
A4 Our Oline never knows run pass, they just know that at anytime we may throw the ball. Keep it simple for them
-
A5: the reads. In high school ball, you never know what a kid is going to do on D. You can only attempt to predict in practice
-
A5: IMO it's the pass..QB can be indecisive at times on when to pull trigger...must rep it religiously https://t.co/caPJtY0R4S

-
Q5: Which part of the RPO is the most difficult to install and what coaching points do you have to help correct it?
-
A5: QB reads, progression, and footwork. They need to be taught slowly and built up. Too many QBS rush the throw and miss guys
-
Darrick Ware, Passing Game Coordinator at Lake Highlands. Sorry I'm late.
-
it ain't cheating unless you get caught.
-
Hardest part is teaching QB who the post snap read is based on Def ID. Work daily to ID defenses. Whatever those communist try
-
A5: like anything else with a read or option, the read is difficult because you're training teenagers 2 make choices under fire
-
-
A5 teaching the QBs to think about every detail of every rep, learn from every read, what do my actions do to my read key?
-
A5: it is ME I hate the passing the ball it is a cowardly act! I want to steal my opponents soul & spirit - run the rock! LOL
-
A5: To get the QB to read it correctly and to give him multiple looks. After that it's a reps thing of how many can we get.
-
A5: QB read. This is why I'm moving to R4 system to clear up decision making. Can only do as much as QB can handle.
-
A5: Getting the QB to understand what youre trying to accomplish. Once they "get it" theyll never want to hear anything but RPO
-
Fellas Im speaking at the HOUSTON GLAZIER next wkd
get asses in & Come say hi!
Would love to meet the GRT COACHES OF TEXAS!
-
A5: QB's hips and feet, flipping them quick on a pull and getting ball out on time. Practice everyday in warm-ups!!
-
Great point! Get those kids coached up on every situation to make the right decision! https://t.co/isAXa3rem5

-
A5 the read and the mesh. Also what to do with it once indecision has happened, because it will.
-
A5: Timing between QB and WR. Finding the right widow, and knowing when the ball will be thrown can be tough since it's so fast
-
no problem! getting close to the end, but go back and answer all you want! I make the archive tomorrow.
-
We try to simplify it as much as possible by having the qb make his decision before the ball hits his hand.
-
A5 everyone must think they are getting the ball. Linemen/RB we are running. WR the ball is coming to me. Has to be full speed
-
: do your job! Have faith in your teammate's ability to complete assignment
-
A5: the QB decision is the hardest IMO, just give us a chance at success on the play whatever you decide.
-
-
-
Teaching the QB read and timing is the hardest for me. Try to keep it simple but it happens fast.
-

A5) My exp. has not been the RPO but getting qb's eyes on the PULL READ..These dudes want to look at mesh with RB all day long!
-
A5: Using R4 for rules. Ex. rhythm throw collision = run ball. Route capped = run ball. Combines RPO & DB pass progressions.
-
A5: IMO it has to be the play of the QB. Oline instruct is EZ, just tell OL step left or right and don't pass a man 2 get a man
-
-
HAHA! YES! Run the ball and remove all hope of recovery by pounding the life out of them! https://t.co/Z71xJq350h
