Q1: "Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education". What does this statement from MLK jr say to you?
-
A0: michelle math RUSD 20th year in education!!!!
-
that's awesome! Way to be.
-
A1: Dr. King reminds us that knowledge without values or character can be easily wielded against the common good.
-
A1: It says the truth, it says a lot about what we forget as Ts
-
My pleasure! Love what I do!
-
A1: We can teach them all this content, but we have to pass down wisdom as well
-
A1: I have seen a ton of character from our students. Especially in their kindness to others & when they combat racism & bigotry.
-
JenWagner IT & k6 lab instructor - murrieta
-
A0: Memorable anniversary, last year's 100 anniversary of GR, thanks
-
A1: teaching = more than books. The times we remember are more about the people we work with, less the information we process.
-
A1: having knowledge without a moral compass is dangerous. Ts need to teach Ss ethics as well as impart knowledge
-
Amen those sorts of things may be evolving out of our culture (: https://t.co/WXdhzrcBSH
-
-
A1: I have seen a ton of character from our students. Especially in their kindness to others & when they combat racism & bigotry.
-
A1: People don’t follow intelligence, they follow people with character, with integrity.
-
a1: Intelligence needs direction. To aim at the good. Otherwise it could become pernicious cunning.
-
I like the perspective. U can do knowledge alone, but to stick together need to embrace the human piece.
https://t.co/7Rc9eQV3v2
-
-
A1: People don’t follow intelligence, they follow people with character, with integrity.
-
A1: Couldn't agree more with We must teach our students more than facts. https://t.co/z3yVGBkkFu
-
-
A1: having knowledge without a moral compass is dangerous. Ts need to teach Ss ethics as well as impart knowledge
-
-
So true generally speaking, sadly it seems a currency we don't see enough of
-
A1: intelligence is not enough, your character is important too.
-
Q1B: What are some "Hero" qualities that Dr. King exhibited that you should implement in your classroom?
-
A1 - Many time our Ss don't learn this at home. It's necessary that we teach and model character.
-
A1b: Patience and love of all peoples
-
A1b: patience and persistence
Envisioning a better future and chasing after it.
-
Q1b: Patience, forgiveness
-
-
-
A1b: Dr King showed persistence. When things were bleak, when was in the Birmingham Jail, he kept fighting.
-
Ahh nice. I wonder if his persistence was wrought from his vision
-
I think character is a lost art. It isn't principles or feeling. Rather deliberate, thoughtful action.
-
A1B:Dr.King was dedicated & willing to make sacrifices because he believed in the importance of his work. And spoke truth to power
-
A1: We meed to teach the whole S not just our content. We are successful if we help create well rounded citizens
-
-
I swear this should be the warning label on every Ts classroom door
-
-
Q2: Who has been a hero to you in this past year? What makes him/her stand out?
-
a1b: He embraced the power of personal persuasion.
-
Agreed! Character isn’t an accident. https://t.co/qw2iv5RIBc
-
-
I think character is a lost art. It isn't principles or feeling. Rather deliberate, thoughtful action.
-
A2: My father. More so in the past year, he is paralyzed now, and handles it w/grace, humility, and humor. Incredible
-
A2: has been a hero to me, shown me how to think about success for students in this digital age
-
nice,
working toward such dreams for the whole is still a very personal experience. And requires persuasion.
-
A2: My dad stood by me & got me through a very tough year (divorce). Often, we don't need to look far to find our true heroes.
-
A2: and Jonathan Greenberg. For building the conditions for success.
-
Q2: our school lost a great hero recently. He exhibited all the qualities we are discussing here tonight. Sgt. Hillary 💔
-
A2: I have many others to name, but it all depends on what we are talking about.
-
A2 - I think of a student on my rabbit team that showed perseverance and patience despite his learning challenges and home life
-
Being a P is like being a T, you're there for life, always giving of yourself to make Ss better. I love this
-
Q2B: Do you see any "Hero" qualities in any of your students, give us an example? What can you do to promote student heroes?
-
Q2B: Do you see any "Hero" qualities in any of your students, give us an example? What can you do to promote student heroes?
-
A2: My dad is my hero. His wisdom, guidance, integrity, and unconditional love are such an example for me.
-
A2: My older brother Greg is my hero. He rose out of the ashes of our family and showed me what true success looks like.
-
a2: Some of the saints in my religious tradition are very inspirational. I am reading about a priest under communist Russia.
-
A2: 3 math teachers new hires
They've all grown a lot and reminded me of challenges of transition.
-
A2: (continued) he often said "be the light in their (Ss) day...they have enough negative in their life already"
-
A2: my wife is my hero working hard every day to teach severely handicapped students life skills
-
A2: All the members of my PLN are my heroes too. So appreciate all who are willing to share their expertise/experience.
-
A2b: A few years ago, our Ss voted a SpEd Ss homecoming Q, not because of SpEd needs, but because of who she was, that was awesome
-
A2B: I have seen Ss shown me examples of perseverance and patience in how they handle real life situations.
-
Cheers to online connections. PLNs make us stronger.
https://t.co/hqBD8mc2BG
-
-
A2: All the members of my PLN are my heroes too. So appreciate all who are willing to share their expertise/experience.
-
That is really cool, good for those kids
-
-
Yeah, it was so powerful, that nearly 7 years after the fact, I still get chills and tears
-
A2b: my student who have more adversity than any young person should face, yet they are there and excel everyday!
-
A2b: I have a student whose father died suddenly but he came back for finals. He blogged he did to make his dad proud
-
A2b: seeing patience in Ss with others.
Saw S teach another in library whom she didn't even know.
-
-
May I say that there are many people behind the scenes from MOT to Nurses to Food Serv that are heroes to me, everyday! Thank them
-
Awesome! Love seeing acts of kindness like that! https://t.co/qYboiYU7eE
-
-
A2b: seeing patience in Ss with others.
Saw S teach another in library whom she didn't even know.
-
That's powerful. Probably cathartic for the S too.
-
A2b: The heroic quality I see most often in my Ss is generosity & empathy. I like this new gen of students. We are going to be ok.
-
A3: Our classified staff are often unsung heroes. It's more than just a job for them. They are making a difference.
-
Q3:Who are some unsung heroes in Education that you feel deserve recognition?
-
Oh, my bad, here's mine
A3. https://t.co/nwLikX9LgR
-
-
May I say that there are many people behind the scenes from MOT to Nurses to Food Serv that are heroes to me, everyday! Thank them
-
A3: Our classified staff are often unsung heros. It is more than a job for them.
-
A3: Our paraeducators are unsung heroes. I would not have survived my reading intervention days without them.
-
A3: Support staff are often overlooked but very deserving of recognition. Without them, things wouldn’t happen.
-
A3: I feel that other school employees such custodians, security and so on, they interact sometimes more with the Ss than teachers
-
a3: Special Ed teachers. They put up with a lot of crap.
-
A3: the parents. We need them, they need us. Same team and too often in a P/T conference this isn't acknowledged.
-
A2B: I had a S that went thru a similar traumatic event as I did and to watch how hard she was fighting back made me so proud
-
A3: our classified staff!!!
-
definitely! Paras are so underappreciated but so valuable. https://t.co/2WgOGDhwqU
-
-
A3: Our paraeducators are unsung heroes. I would not have survived my reading intervention days without them.
-
Yeah we can forget the Ps
-
a3: PE teachers who go out of their way to creating engaging physical activities for students.
-
. said it earlier, but classified support staff are unsung heroes.
-
Well said, Jed! Or should I say typed? :) https://t.co/R7WssnERIJ
-
-
A3: the parents. We need them, they need us. Same team and too often in a P/T conference this isn't acknowledged.
-
A3: I agree SPED and Paras for sure
-
-
In talking about whole student the body has needs which we may take for granted and ignore.
https://t.co/uPpCfAafHQ
-
-
a3: PE teachers who go out of their way to creating engaging physical activities for students.
-
Q3b: Why is it important to share these hero qualities with students and how can this affect their lives?
-
A3b: We need to model character at all times. We really can't fool students. They see more than you may think.
-
They can smell it a mile away
-
A3b: Same reason you do as a parent, Ss observe adults as examples, if we don't show them, what will replace it
-
So true. Students need models to emulate.
-
A3b: Hero qualities will take students much farther in life than an “A” on a test. Hero qualities truly make one successful.
-
Yes, Yes, Yes!!! https://t.co/mJPFGmFwfz
-
-
A3b: Same reason you do as a parent, Ss observe adults as examples, if we don't show them, what will replace it
-
A3b: Ss need truth, and they need to gain appreciation for truth.
This is hard to find in books, & people sometimes hide it too.
-
A3b too many anti-heroes in our popular culture. We need to teach our Ss what a real hero is.
-
-
A3:GovPat Brown who had the vision to lead the Ca.MasterPlan for HigherEd of1960, creating modern & affordable UC/CSU/CC structure
-
https://t.co/3xSiD5MPbt
-
-
A3b: We need to model character at all times. We really can't fool students. They see more than you may think.
-
A3b: For many of our Ss, we are the only ones teaching them hero qualities and ethics. Be the example or someone else will be.
-
I love seeing this. When I get stuck, my students patiently teach me too. https://t.co/ZA3rix9X3Y
-
-
A2b: seeing patience in Ss with others.
Saw S teach another in library whom she didn't even know.
-
Preach on, these kids need to know what a real hero is.
-
So right. Popular culture often focuses on ugly and inappropriate drama.
https://t.co/1wuuV6rz5Y
-
-
A3b too many anti-heroes in our popular culture. We need to teach our Ss what a real hero is.
-
-
A3b - Also model how we speak to others because they may not remember what we said but they will remember how it made them feel.
-
I truly do believe most Ss do know, they may be attracted to anti-heroes, but deep down, I'm sure they know
-
Any final thoughts on heroes?
-
FT: Personal goal this week:
Highlight 1+ hero(es) daily.
-
-
-
FT: Find a Ss exhibiting and celebrate them
-
We have a way to recognize our paraprofessionals & other classified staff thanks to https://t.co/gsjUbwPJdo
-
-
A3: Support staff are often overlooked but very deserving of recognition. Without them, things wouldn’t happen.
-
FT: Be yourself, be honest and model for Ss what they will need in the future
-
A3b: Ss need repeated positive guidance and reinforcement for good values. It is better to model than to tell...
-
FT: Happy Anniversary ! Here's to another year of important and relevant conversations!

-
-
A3: I feel that other school employees such custodians, security and so on, they interact sometimes more with the Ss than teachers
-
-
I love the new time. And I look forward to next week's topic.
-
LOL no doubt, and sometimes I prefer that convo to the others (:
-
-
FT: Lucky to work with hero tech coaches , & their coach
-
Same here. We are often just too busy when students are on campus. https://t.co/S3IwWguwrx
-
-
