#IBMAchat Archive
A weekly moderated chat for educators, coordinators, and administrators associated with the IB Mid-Atlantic region of schools. A focused chat each week about various IB-related topics.
Monday October 3, 2016 7:00 PM EDT
Welcome! We'll launch the 1st question officially in a few minutes...but feel free to jump in with it! https://t.co/TuzlrbAat2
We will use a Q1, Q2, Q3 format. Please respond with A1, A2, A3.
Laura Lane, IB MYP Coordinator, Falls Church, VA
Q1: Introduce yourself: name, programme, role, location/school.
A1: Kim Janifer, IB DP, IB English Lit. HL, North High, Hagerstown MD
Thank you! Good to see you this evening!
Q2: How can we incorporate teamwork/collaboration in our teaching?
A1: Collaboration is a real world skill, so why not model classroom collaboration in a business model?
A2: Cross Discipline collaboration through TOK connection, focus on learner profile
Tell us more about this idea. How might it look?
A2: Assign roles, ask teams to set goal and make an action plan, and hold each member of the collaboration accountable.
Do you have any examples of TOK connections in English?
I use the different subject/TOK questions and tie in Art, Ways of Knowing, What is Language, What gets lost in translations?, etc.
A2: Kagan's cooperative learning model is great for collaboration in middle school.
Link available? https://t.co/RoRFS8huJn
A2: Kagan's cooperative learning model is great for collaboration in middle school.
A2: Yes, I have students develop project proposals and then they’re accountable
Right now, it's a 3-person chat....it's OK....we're new to this. :)
A2: We also do a lot of fishbowl discussions, Socratic Seminars, and Philosophical Chairs
Q3: What is a way to differentiate to meet the needs of all learners?
A3: I’ve been exploring the use of hyperdocs
If you're in Participate Learning...look at the "resources" on the left side...
's link is now there!
A3: Ss can work at own pace or “choose” the task
I don't know much about hyperdocs...how does it work? https://t.co/ke9WGWeZ3P
A3: Ss can work at own pace or “choose” the task
A3: Differentiation can occur when assessment data (pre, formative, post) is analyzed.
A3: Basically it’s the teaching unit as a “real time” document of hyperlinks / resources for students
A3: DI also works well when teachers collaborate to share creating the resources.
A3: choice in products / links to standards
Yes, then the differentiation can happen. You have to know your learner.
Q4: What are ways to ensure teaching is grounded in global contexts?
A4: Ts can use Wiggins & McTighe's GRASPS model to design performance tasks that are grounded in the real world.
Is there a book or link to share? https://t.co/af779ecdD8
A4: Ts can use Wiggins & McTighe's GRASPS model to design performance tasks that are grounded in the real world.
Q4: Ss must know what it means to be a global citizen
A4: Literature certainly helps Ss discuss the world around them.
ahhhh...you're preaching to the choir there! :) https://t.co/MTOCuG82AL
A4: Literature certainly helps Ss discuss the world around them.
A4: We have recently begun blogging and would love to make connections with other schools/areas
Q5: What are ways you have grounded a lesson in inquiry?
This is my first google chat....so pardon my inexperience!
No worries! We're on question 5. Respond with A5 at the start of your answer. https://t.co/iOOyjQVJWL

Sorry, y'all! My dog is not letting me participate frequently! She's trying to hog my attention. :)
The great thing about chats is that you can check in as you are able. https://t.co/VnovegUXHS
Sorry, y'all! My dog is not letting me participate frequently! She's trying to hog my attention. :)
A5: Help Ss create higher order Qs so they create the Qs and ultimately facilitate the discussion and their learning
Love the Visible Thinking strategies
Do you use any particular set of question stems to teach students to write questions?
A5: I also like the National School Reform protocolshttp://www.nsrfharmony.org/free-resources/protocols/a-z
A5: We are also an AVID school and use Costa's Levels of Questioning
A5: I also love using artwork or images to spark inquiry whenever introducing a new topic.
me too! Life of Pi unit using diff artistic reps of cover art sparks great inquiry from kids https://t.co/eIJTmPmqRv
A5: I also love using artwork or images to spark inquiry whenever introducing a new topic.
Heads up: Going to deviate from script in 3 min to ask a "mystery" question 6.
A5: We do a unit on King's speeches - and I have students "analyze" the monument (virtual tour)- visual rhetoric
Whoohoo, mystery question! :)
Q6: Last question -- How can we encourage more participation in IBMAchat in the future? What suggestions do you have?
Q6: I can advertise it more to my teachers. I thought we were doing a coordinator trial run tonight. Sorry!
I know last year I read different chats but didn't feel comfortable jumping in. It takes a little time...
No worries...I see 13 ppl listed as participants in PL...but didn't see them chat. Not sure why. https://t.co/vpNunxztTW

Yes, hopefully word of mouth - getting people on Twitter - it's such a great way to connect.
I am hoping there are some "lurkers" doing just that! https://t.co/QhsCZ0jjAS

Suggestions for future chat topics?
I agree with .....reading and watching...but not ready to feel comfortable to respond!
Focus on Learner Profile attributes
Next: assessment in an IB classroom, international mindedness resource share, IB projects (PP, CAS, EE)-what works & what doesn't
Maybe how to encourage students to live by the learner profile!
Oops - last post cut off
