Intro:
Welcome to #flipclasschat#flipclass -- introduce yourself, subject, level, yrs flipping and if you could dress up like a superhero, movie character, historical figure, etc. who/what would it be? #flipclass#flipclasschat
To continue talking about meeting the learning needs for ALL of our students we are talking special students. Our main chat will be in #flipclasschat. We use a Q1/A1 format. Please include A’s and the hashtag in your responses to Q’s to keep the chat flowing. #flipclass
Hi! Emily from NJ, I think this is my 5th year flipping, maybe 6th. I'll represent a whole bunch of ppl and say Rosie the Riveter #flipclass#flipclasschat
Hello @bohndrake glad you could join us... it seems that many people may have reached the end of the first grading period this quiet monday evening. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Special Students - noun - Students with non-traditional learning needs. May include students with learning or physical challenges or students that excel at learning. #flipclasschat#flipclass
Q1 Flipped Class gives teachers the opportunity to create an engaging, and student-centered classroom. How has, or can, flipped apply to special students.
#flipclasschat#flipclass
A1: I have found flipped has been instrumental in addressing my most challenged learners as it has freed me from the self imposed rigidity of lockstep teaching, allowing Ss to move at different paces. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1 part 1: One of the common things I see with my special students is the need for more processing time. Having the information on video allows them to pause, rewind, and rewatch as much as necessary #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1 part 2: And then, since I'm in and among my students while they're working, I'm able to give the students that need to most help the support that they need to be successful #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1: This year I've made the shift to more self-paced learning. I love that this allows learners at all levels to master the material! #flipclass#flipclasschat
@sarahjoyejones very true, "all" level benefit and sometimes in education we leave out those learners who are specially gifted by not allowing them their pace. #flipclass#flipclasschat
I would eventually love to go fully self-paced/mastery, but I struggle with the idea of having Ss that switch teachers at semester and making sure they are where they need to be at that time #flipclass#flipclasschat
The horizontal alignment piece can be a challenge. I think in part because we as teachers cant comprehend a student that completes the objectives early and stops proceeding. #flipclass#flipclasschat
I don't worry much about the kids who would complete things early (maybe I should), but it's the kids on the other side that make me hesitant to do it. #flipclass#flipclasschat
@JJBackeberg I'm fortunate that I get my students for the full year, so as long as they've completed the course by the end of the school year, we're set! #flipclass#flipclasschat
I have discussed some options with other teachers that I can have students work on if they finish my content early, i.e. Computer Programing or the next course #flipclass#flipclasschat
At the HS level enrichment is often a challenge as the schedules of the high achievers are tightly packed already. I know some of my Ss have expressed early finish reward is time for other classes. #flipclass#flipclasschat.
Yeah, I don't see any issue with Ss moving on. If a student in my Precalculus class finished the class material early then they could get a head-start with the basics of Calculus and come into next school year more prepared for that material. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Not to in anyway shortchange my students, but I have doubts that my Pre-Calc kids would jump at the chance to voluntarily move forward. #flipclass#flipclasschat hellp @schaver37

I will skip ahead to Q4 as we have actually been hitting on Qs 2&3
Q4 How do you encourage students to focus on what they have and have not learned, rather than what grade they have received?
#flipclasschat#flipclass
A4 as we have mostly math teachers here, there are expectations of what Pre-calc or Alg 2 encompasses and if Ss and Ts are focused on achieving course objectives rather than Learning, we can lose sight of the broader goal of learning mathematics. #flipclass#flipclasschat
I don't disagree with you, but thinking about the Ss that would want to work ahead and show the necessary understanding...I think they would be prime candidates to move to that next level #flipclass#flipclasschat

As we bring this chat to a close input is important so check out our little survey

A4: I think that really comes from a school culture and that can be very difficult to change. And it's not just for #flipclass Ts but for all Ts. Focus more on valuable feedback vs the number at the top of the paper #flipclasschat
I have dreams of a Utopian school where grades are completely eliminated and Ss know they are there purely to gather as much knowledge as possible and better themselves #flipclass#flipclasschat
