#games4ed Archive
#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?

Hi ! Mom, former teacher, edtech DMM. As a kid loved volleyball, basketball and loved playing Sonic the Hedgehog. 🎮
Hi! Do you like teaching 3rd grade!? I am in school now to become an elementary teacher.
Nathan, something with dice
When it's good, 3rd grade is the best. When it's bad, you're all, "What the heck, you're -nine-. Cut it out."
Haha! Nice, Fun with Dice!
heya! hoping some of my grad Ss studying join, too. looking forward to learning more abt
used to throw the bones for cash with some old men behind the laundromat.
Starting a new Minecraft club in a few days. Hints or tricks anyone?
Hey everyone Join us in Chat talking about a GLOBAL DAY of PLAY at school! :D
So...in honor of GSPlayDay , we're going UNSTRUCTURED! Let's just start here and see where we go! https://t.co/eVipcMcd3f
we should do that at ISTE. Sure there will be some other who want to play
love it! yes, play is open-ended, self-directed, & embracing of multiple pathways - a great format for a chat!
ohh how nice. You made a chat especially for me
as the new guy, what is Global Play Day?
Glad to hear it! I am very excited to start teaching!
So , who's signed up for ? Whatcha got planned?
Set up a committee of students who will help with the administration (rules, etc.). These should be your know. Ss in MC
hey lisa! glad you can join and rep tonight!
I spy with My little Eye something in "YOUR ROOM" that you will bring to play on Global Play Day! - __Fill in the Blank_
i was a middle school math teacher in another life. are you connected with any schools/Ts in the Denver area?
The general idea behind is to allow Ss to play in an unstructured environment. Let them choose. No screens.
I love the idea of just letting kids play! School work can be to serious sometimes!
I'm trying to convince my Director to let the Company have a Global Play Day along with you all.
what are your plans for ? anything specific in the works?
Who here did Global School Play Day last year? Can you share your experiences?
I have to find the design and 3D print a set
play is pretty serious too. in fact, i would argue it's more serious than what passes as most schooling
That would be so awesome! Good luck with that!
I'm going to show the director of my son's daycare the Global Play Day webiste
I'm really passionate about turning MOST not all but MOST Education into a Game! Powerful retention and Learning happens in play!
Not at the moment, this is my first year in CO.
I'm all over . We have daily play time in class, and we did it last year too. It was fantastic.
that's awesome - let both and know how that goes!
A little easier for us, we work with Minecraft of course. But we rarely get to play it.
I've got some games on order, should be here Monday. Keeping the laptops locked up on Wednesday!
I played with Spheros and Ollies today with students not really a game but played
I've been experimenting with games like Tetris and Geometry Wars, but I'm curious as to what other STEAM teachers prefer.
We've got Ts here who teach different levels. What are you thinking you could do in your school?
What are some student favorite activities to play on Global Play Day?
Most of Ss' experience was pretty pos, but the whiny kid DID get whiny. I said, "Figure it out, you may not wanna play w/them..."
Nice. That's a good point. Not all play has to be a game!!
I get whiny kid learned something though!
love the idea of locking up the computers. My Ss get too comfortable, forget how to "play" with board games or dice
Working on figuring out how to use Minecraft in teaching SS content. We've got some cool scale models of the pyramids, Great Wall
This yr, we've talked board games, puzzles, crafts, Lego, Lincoln Logs, puppets, drawing, etc. I can play too, but as a follower.
I also played with my invisible friends
what if you took those tools away, too? play is not necessarily associated with the structure of a game...
Yep! Not everyone wants to do it your way. Figure it out, mannnnn!
hi everyone, sorry to miss this chat tonight! I ordered more games today, Ss love games
Good point to both! Spheros, Lego, Building, Drawing all great activites that have positive benefit https://t.co/EFGw75arnd
Nice. That's a good point. Not all play has to be a game!!
drawing is such a powerful means of expressing play, esp outside of a context. thx for sharing
not as a follower, but as a co-learner
I think it's good for Ss to play face to face...figure this is a great time to do it! https://t.co/V8QpauhPxc
love the idea of locking up the computers. My Ss get too comfortable, forget how to "play" with board games or dice
Puppets Yeah! you should chat with Great Young Pupeteer and Artist!
do you teach a steam class? I'm looking to transition to a steam classroom
Also: I've found that -I- learn a ton about my Ss through watching them play.
It is when you are trying to Edcamp your classroom
I've considered it. I teach 11-12 grade, so I don't want it to fall into a "let's just sit and talk" sesh
Cool! We have a puppet theatre made from an old, hollow TV on top of a hollow box frame.
funny - and sad - how adult observation of play is too readily channeled towards formal sports and competition
Love the potential of Minecraft!
Speaking of dice, my 17 mo. old and I rolled a large d20 back and forth, and I would shout the number it landed on! Woo for play!
What tools/materials is everything thinking about breaking out? Any cool ideas?
I teach middle school math.
I think allowing OPTIONS is a really good move! Some will want to play a game, some play 2 play
Except when you grew up geeky & creative! All my friends were nerdy or gay in HS, that leads to non-sports play!
at camp with kids. Enjoy . I will be doing the play day too. Love to do a blab with you.
Materials: Gonna break out the board games, maybe some playing cards. Got some D & D dice coming on Monday!!
The toys/games cabinet will be open, and it's a free for all so long as they're not breaking my stuff/each other.
Yes, we need to talk it up sometime! Wish Wisconsin and Nebraska were closer!
Did anyone play with MLB Showdown cards back in the day?
I love it! No breaking stuff...otherwise, go at it all!
How about give the students the chance to bring their favorite games in from home. Depending on age and respect level. :D
Hey, weren't you supposed to plan a food-only game for tonight? How'd that turn out? ;)
Iowa is in the middle! Just sayin :)
Great idea here...get the message out Monday & Tuesday, have Ss bring their favorite games! https://t.co/ph6S2VOYa2
How about give the students the chance to bring their favorite games in from home. Depending on age and respect level. :D
we are working trying to figure out how to integrate Lego Dimensions into class
In my middle school we were given the option of floor hockey, drawing, board games, or reading. Lots of options!
Anyone thinking of bringing some "classic" games from their childhood?
talking abt tools, anyone "playing" w where their kids/Ss will play? new playgrounds for them to explore on ?
oh yeah, we created the build the best taco ever game
I like that physical games were allowed, too! https://t.co/U9WSIkF9lX
In my middle school we were given the option of floor hockey, drawing, board games, or reading. Lots of options!
A fave school memory: Tchr sent us outside, split into 3 teams, and had a snow-building contest. 3rd grade. Still remember it!
We went "Back to the Future" and played old school video games from the 80s after school. Ss were in awe.
i certainly hope so! challenging notion of playground as both material & metaphor greatly expands qualities of play
My favorite game growing up was predator and prey
So many elementary school memories of outdoor activities like that! Then middle school started and it was the end :/
What places can Ss play? Hallways? Outside? Library? Under the tables?
Super cool idea! Going retro games would be so fun with my hs students! https://t.co/SCPBGpPrnY
We went "Back to the Future" and played old school video games from the 80s after school. Ss were in awe.
Pretty much anywhere in my room. Double the recess...
we usually migrate to the hallway. Classroom cannot contain us
Bring your snowsuit and play out in the snow! Build forts, and go sledding!
and if the name of the game seems problematic today, you should see some of the character cards.
thx, it's what i study, so i better stick with my day job! got a few articles coming soon about play across settings
GASPP!!! I played this at my grandma's house! It still exists?!?!?!?!?!?!!? Haven't thought abt it 4 yrs! https://t.co/dSFZ4XFsH7
Hey there, ! What did I miss?
a motto for learning, not schooling: "classroom cannot contain us" https://t.co/sja5W0Bj2o
we usually migrate to the hallway. Classroom cannot contain us
OMG, I don't remember anything other than playing it! I'd love to see the cards!
Very cool! Do you recommend any particular research for introducing play in the classroom?
It's like how Snakes and Ladders turned into "Shoots and Ladders"
In honor of unstructured play, we're having an unstructured chat! Talking Global School Play Day! RU taking part?
If you're are just starting out play in the classroom book eXPlore like a Pirate is a must! It hasnt left my side
i mean... vivian gussin paley is best for elementary/ECE, brian sutton-smith for theory, its a huge list
science game. Ss assigned dfnt animal, have to find food and water and survive.
I've never heard of this game, but it seems hillarious!
Thanks! I want a decent place to start so I can begin my decent down the rabbit hole lol
Quite a few people have talked about sharing this with their admins. How do we get them on board? https://t.co/gV3xIhKl71
High Schools can look at playing some wargames or evolution games.
The 1949 edition is pretty cheap on Ebay.
Oh my, a cabbage lollipop! Wow. What low expectations we had! LOL
I've invited mine to my room, shared pics, posted on social media and they get intrigued, soon they will start flocking to your room
1st the board on the ground. Ask the administrator to step in the game board. Guess they are on the board
I dunno, my principal is cool, and is excited to overhear the kids talking about in the hall.
That is always the biggest question isn't it! We're so close yet far from play being a validated pedagogical approach.
Amazing book. Right now we're doing a book study on Wednesday nights 7CST. https://t.co/CCpozmPQDh
If you're are just starting out play in the classroom book eXPlore like a Pirate is a must! It hasnt left my side
what better way than to play w/ them, to learn through experience. break them out of office & routine https://t.co/LMxNV4hkCu
Quite a few people have talked about sharing this with their admins. How do we get them on board? https://t.co/gV3xIhKl71
I remember playing a trench warfare game in HS SS where we threw paper bombs & advanced our desks forward :)
Evolution games sounds amazing! I've never heard of that before though. Share?
Sometimes I drool looking at all the cool games history Ts can play with their kids!! https://t.co/3RKMXBHLY6
High Schools can look at playing some wargames or evolution games.
Show them how change in routine is important, and show them how excited students are
Tough one. Unstructured can mean "unplanned" for a lot of admin. Doesn't mean without purpose! https://t.co/sAFXce7g4S
Quite a few people have talked about sharing this with their admins. How do we get them on board? https://t.co/gV3xIhKl71
The rhymes on a lot of the cards are horrible.
How cool is this!! https://t.co/4fYZjrvpeB
I remember playing a trench warfare game in HS SS where we threw paper bombs & advanced our desks forward :)
Predator/Prey is just awesome! with the Survival Trend in Mainstream games this would go over very well!
. And I LOVE this meme!! Yay for
Spore comes to mind (PC game). There are also a few board games that use the evolution mech: https://t.co/1q6KhNx4UG
haha! I thought only hardcore Disney-Philes would!
I know some Ps are super great, but I've had others who would really frown on it :(
. Change the way it's worded! "An open-ended Social Learning Approach / Technique" - New pedagogical phrase anyone?
Thinking of ways o use sim city and zoo tycoon
. Perhaps it's the vocabulary we choose. "Student choice" may go over better with some admin?
I know, you're right. It's not just admins, but slowly we're moving in the right direction. Good things take time.
Managing your money vs. what the people want, expenses, improvements etc. Get for economic classes
Very true. I've no doubt I'll have Ts raising their eyebrows at me next Wednesday. Luckily, my P is awesome
A1: Get administrators on board by writing grants which promote gaming in the classroom.
"Student-Centered" is good way to phrase it.
Thoughts on playing with Ss? Do you sit with them and play? Or do you let them interact with each other without "adult" presence?
gotta leave early thx for a great chat as always!
Last year I said I'm dad who doesn't wanna be bothered. Not sure about this year.
If people are playing games and having fun around me, no matter the age, I want in!
I get down and play with them, they love it!
no doubt i'm playing!!! When they see me having fun they get more into it!
Can I sign my office up for Global Play Day? :)
Is anyone going to be tracking the visible benefits BEFORE / AFTER the PlayDay to share How it Benifited their Ss? Ts?
I have a hard time holding back, especially if it's Apples to Apples!
Every morning we have morning meeting. Starts with greeting, sharing and then a game!
Thanks for stopping and sharing your insights! A pleasure to have you always!
I let the kids use our 12 bots in the mornings and throughout the day. Just tell em not to bother those reading.
A2: When Ts play with Ss they become equals, not even acting as facilitators, but equals with students.
I like that you start mornings off like this, makes going to class more enjoyable!
I ask student volunteers to write about it so we can share on blog.
Love this brilliance! https://t.co/tecYv2gRB6
A2: When Ts play with Ss they become equals, not even acting as facilitators, but equals with students.
Awesome Idea! Vlogs (with permission), Video the game! Write about it. Images! All great ways!
I need to get my hands on some of those babies!!
Enjoy the weekend Remi! Awesome thoughts again. Thanks for sharing.
It's the way my brain works best... in metaphor.
Yes, I am interested in if/how Ts assess the impact games have on their Ss.
My kids love our Sphero Sprk, and our robots.
I think a discussion at end is important...whether end of class/day or on Thursday. Talk with students about the experience
It's so important to track and be able to share the learning games! Means more fuel for change in learning
Great idea...student reporters for ! https://t.co/BlvMYRldRZ
I ask student volunteers to write about it so we can share on blog.
So do you categorize games or only have them play one at a time so you can pinpoint which ones are best?
We've been playing One Night Ult. Werewolf by lately, we'll need to use a script to do it w/o phone for .
It's hard w/o phone, that's how we did it first time. It's dooable tho! Just takes a bit longer
our science T wants some !
This is a super fun game all year long. You can track your deck online. How far will your sneaky cards go? https://t.co/iU2l4dyffa
Thanks for having me all! Keep playing and having fun!
Thanks for coming all! It's been a great evening! See you all next week!!!
