First Q coming in one minute
-
Hi Tim!! Happy Tuesday & welcome to !
-
Hello everyone Sean Hutchinson 4th grade teacher from Stamford
-
Hey Tim- glad you could join. Less than two month until
-
Good to be here! Great topic since tomorrow starts a new semester!
-
-
Q1.What does making learning come alive mean to you?
-
Hey Melissa good to see you
-
A1 making the kids personally feel what it was like to be there, and share in the enthusiasm!
-
A1: Two things - I literally see learning moving around my classroom as ppl or things or movies & having ss be a HUGE part of it
-
Yes! That is what I was going for in my attempt to write a response!
-
Rob I am glad I made it this evening. I am looking forward to the chat
-
A1. To me- it's about getting Ss excited about learning- know matter what subject you teach
-
S's see the ripple effects of what they are studying in their world. See how history matters!
-
A1- very high student engagement, creativity, curiosity, real world application
-
A1: It means never having to hear Ss say "when am I going to ever use this again?" connecting learning to life; good, bad or ugly
-
lol I beat you too the punch
-
Yes! Totally agree - their excitement brings the learning to life!
-
The real world piece is huge. If they don't see a connection, it won't matter.
-
A1: Getting students stoked about learning and giving them choice. Exuding passion when teaching that spreads to students.
-
A1: Learning that is engaging and gets Ss excited. Learning that allows students to interact with the concepts they are learning
-
Hi Hutch long time no chat!
-
You did!!! It's okay - it's nearly past my bedtime - lol
-
Great answer- It's also about us brining our own passions to the classroom.
-
A1: Active engagement by students with the content. Opportunities to apply knowledge.
-
We can't choose the content, but we can choose the lens; S's try on different points of view
-
A1: Making ss as excited about a topic as you are - making learning fun in a way that inspires them to learn more
-
A1: Great question. Where Students are excited and are creating. Inquiry based learning.
-
You and me both! My twins keep me up at night!
-
for sure. Ss respond to that. Be real with them. Let "them in." This helps build relationships and inspire learning.
-
Welcome Joy. I always love your perspective. Glad you could join tonight.
-
That relationship point is key in helping to make the learning come alive
-
Q2. What simulations have you used in your classroom to improve engagement and learning?
-
I beat a dead horse with this, but it's everything.
-
Creating -- that's also another key piece that sometimes misses the beat
-
If we aren't excited they aren't either!
-
I'm on the same bandwagon Jimmy!! I tell everyone all the time
-
A2: Making the impossible possible. For example, using green screen to create and demonstrate understanding in diff ways.
-
Twins!? You go! That's amazing and inspiring and wow....
-
-
Hello ! Meant to jump in earlier but totally lost track of time!
-
-
A2: Do simulations have to be technology? I associate our learning to food ALL the time - base ten blocks look like cheese!
-
A2- again real-world applications=planning a road trip, starting a business, blogging to a real audience
-
Hey Adam!! Welcome - any time is better than no time!
-
-
These are awesome!! What was the project?
-
real world and audience. That is such a solid point. The Global Read Aloud does this for me and my students.
-
Oh my goodness- is it after 8:00 already?!?
-
Gr9 Western Traditions S's created life-size Medieval Monopoly and played in character
-
-
A2: The Global Read is a great chance for students to see beyond our classroom walls to celebrate literature and the written word.
-
-
Only a few minutes....Hi Amy!! Happy Tuesday!! How's the work coming?! You are one week closer to being done!
-
This was preparing for hurricanes. Different roles and perspectives.
-
ABSOLUTELY totally agree!! My Ss LOVED it as did I!
-
Q3. How can you incorporate food/celebrations into your classroom?
-
A2 oh boy, I have used A LOT of simulations. Colonial junk food, lost colonist of roanoke, salem witch trials, tax collector, etc
-
Yes, and my next class is Saturday! Are we getting a teeny bit of snow, or what?
-
-
A3 I use food to show what colonial food was like, while connecting it to modern junk food.
-
-
-
global read aloud is awesome, cant wait for next year.
-
we never truly grow up hahahaha!
-
A3: I compare all that we are learning with food - cheese in math to share it with everyone, ice cream and fractions!
-
A3. Ss go to law school- take the "Bar" -graduate and have a graduation party. Great way to study the Constitution.
-
That's really cool!! Now my brain is spinning...
-
A3: did a huge multicultural feast last year. Ss wrote blurb about foods, parents came. It was epic.

-
Any ideas how to connect food/celebration to rocks & minerals?
-
A3: told sp T today: prep traditional food, have students back channel/doc/record write/blog the process since tasting is a no-no.
-
thanks, I dress as a chef and set the class up as a restaurant while they do the work and eat.
-
A2: Has anyone found creative ways to incorporate the “real world “ into Math and Science . Want to move away from box science
-
A2: Has anyone found creative ways to incorporate the “real world “ into Math and Science . Want to move away from box science
-
So cool!!! Now I'm trying to find a way to do this or something similar with rocks & minerals
-
A3: using food/celebrations to make connections. Think about the lives of Ss around the world.
-
have them make rock candy or use rock candy
-
A3. We also have the World's Fair - Ss present about a country from the world and prepare a dish with it.
-
A2: Photos when I dressed up as the reading warrior to introduce new books to class library.
https://t.co/uHD0nqwYRC
-
My friend just mentioned the same thing - we are going to have to do that! Thanks!
-
-
it really is. Crazy amount of ideas flying around all the time for it.
-
Q4. What one way you incorporate technology when teaching?

Q4. What is one way you incorporate technology when teaching?
-
A4: We used this week to create vocabulary videos

Having a GHO fishbowl discussion with backchannel with students from another school
-
I need to find more people to skype with - my kids keep asking
-
-
A4: Green screen videos, Mystery Skype, , , , . Skies the limit when used purposefully.
-
I've done that before - haven't connected with another class in a while
-
A4: ALWAYS have a back channel available for questions and engagement, no matter the lesson type. Period.
-
-
A4: We've also used , Twitter to share learning,

-
Hello Jessie- Glad you could join.
-
What's ? That sounds cool!
-
-
Q5. What is one lesson that really makes your subject come alive in the classroom? A great time to share a lesson.
-
they keep adding features, which is cool. The organization is second to none, IMO.
-
A4 clickers, google classroom, class dojo, remind, virtual tours, youtube, to name a few
-
It's things like this that make it VERY difficult to do ONE thing at a time!
-
It was an all day event promoting Digital Citizenship- a precursor to coming in a couple day.
-
Wow, Barbara, that is awesome!
-
SO cool!! I saw an instagram post about - Sounds awesome!
-
A5: Lessons that make learning come alive are always good ol' fashion book talks. Simple, effective, and inspiring.
-
-
Virtual tours always intrigued me!
-
So I heard I might be visiting your school soon! Not sure if my principal approved it or not
-
Ive only used it for jamestown, salem, and plymouth. Kids do it at their own pace. Pretty interesting.
-
A5: I don't think it's one lesson - but I think its a combo of the relationships w my Ss & my desire to make them love learning
-
A5. One of my favorite lessons is The Trail of Tears Act-it-Out - Ss take on roles as people on the trail.
-
same here! I would love to do google expeditions
-
A4:Tech=essential tool when working w/ a multi-level group.While I read w/ 1 Ss, another can do their 1st edit using GoogleRead&Write
-
made it with two minutes to go! A5- always love good, healthy disagreements when kids are unafraid to question and refute each other
-
-
Did I miss all of tonight's conversation on ? I was presiding at a toastmasters meeting instead.
